Here at Voluntary Action LeicesterShire we believe in promoting
the services that are provided by the voluntary and community
sector in Leicester and Leicestershire. These groups contribute
£630 million to the local economy and provide vital support to
communities on a daily basis.
About this Directory
This directory includes details of 187 voluntary and community
sector organisations1
that are delivering services to actively support
and promote economic inclusion. These organisations offer a range
of services to support people’s housing needs, increase people’s
employability skills and generally promote their economic wellbeing.
At VAL, we’re working to raise awareness of the sector’s economic
contribution. This directory is also part of that work, providing some
key facts about the economic contribution of the VCS in Leicester
and Leicestershire
How to use this directory
Organisations are listed at the front of the directory in relation to
the type of service they deliver. You can then find the group listed
alphabetically. Should you have any queries about the directory,
please don’t hesitate to get in touch using the contact details on the
back of this directory.
1. The groups included in this directory have given VAL specific permission to publicise
their service and economic inclusion forms a core part of their service offer. There
are many more organisations on VAL’s database that are either indirectly contributing
towards economic inclusion and/or have not given VAL permission to share their
information.

Emmaus Leicestershire Rutland is a homelessness charity with a
difference, providing more than just a bed for the night for people
who have experienced homelessness and social exclusion. For
many people who experience homelessness, one of the biggest
obstacles they must overcome is a loss of self esteem. Emmaus
provides an opprtunity to regain this, with a chance to make a real
contribution to their community.Emmaus communities are not
hostels for the homeless; they provide a home as long as someone
needs it. For many, this support and stability is like the family they
don’t have, providing a safe environment in which to settle and
rebuild their lives. Often this is a opportunity to overcome issues or
rebuild relationships with estranged family. Emmaus is not about
giving hand outs, it’s about providing an opportunity for each
individual to overcome homelessness. Social enterprise is central to
the Emmaus model as it provides meaningful work for companions
but also generates funding to maintain communities. Companions
are expected to work for 40 hours per week, or to the best of their
ability, in the charity’s social enterprise and are required to sign of
all benefits, with the exception of housing benefit, which is claimed
to help support the community. This approach has been proven
to produce long term, sustainable results, and for many who have
been stuck in a cycle of homelessnes, offers the support they need
to overcome this. For every £1 spent with Emmaus there is a
£11 social, economic and environmental return on investment.
This was the finding of a Social Return on Investment study carried
out on behalf of Emmaus. The research showed that Emmaus can
deliver a significant impact, with savings to the healthcare system,
a reduction in crime, reoffending and savings to the benefits bill.

Hft is a national charity, providing local support services for people
with learning disabilities throughout England. We support people
to live life the way they choose - whether providing support for
just a couple of hours a week, or 24 hours a day. We support
people with learning disabilities and family carers across England.
Our services include Supported Living, Residential Care and Short
Break services. We empower people to make their own choices,
including finding a job, building friendships and relationships and
taking part in activities. Whatever your needs, we’ll find the best
way to give you the right support. Through supported living, we
can support people to live however and wherever they choose.
While we support more and more people living in their own homes,
sometimes residential care is the best option. We offer high-quality
residential care in some of the regions we operate in. We also offer
flexible short breaks, respite and holidays from just a few hours
here and there to longer trips abroad. We also provide specialist
support services to those with specific or complex care needs.
Our East Midlands service is based in Leicestershire. It provides a
range of support for people with learning disabilities including:
Supported living services - supporting individuals with varying
degrees of disability to live in supported living arrangements
within the community. We have recently helped 13 people we
support to move from residential care to brand-new housing in
Market Harborough. Residential care - is provided at our site at
Shangton and also in homely surroundings in houses in the Market
Harborough area. Occupation Employment - such as Out

We run lunch and after-school Enterprise Clubs in which students
re-design and re-construct recycled, natural, donated and low-
cost materials into high-quality craft products that they sell at
school and community events. The aim of the club is to raise
confidence, improve social relationships and team skills and
develop a strong sense of pride and achievement. Very effective
with those vulnerable to educational disengagement. Rolling
recycled paper into jewellery features highly at the start of the
sessions; the club members learn about a group of women in
Uganda who produce paper jewellery as an alternative to their
dangerous work breaking rocks in a stone quarry producing gravel
for a living. The members link with the Ugandan beadmakers
through letters and photos and model their own jewellery after
them. They go on to produce other up-cycled crafts like origami
flowers, embellished vases, pencil holders, seasonal wreaths.
The participants learn enterpise skills such as costing, pricing,
marketing, labelling, displaying, demonstrating to the public,
talking to customers, making change, reinvesting profits. During
the year the participants also produce and donate educational
resources to Early Years settings such as counting lines made from
garden wire and plastic milk bottle tops, flash cards from recycled
Xmas cards, beanbags. Members of the public get involved in
supporting the young people through donating their recyclables.

Emmaus Leicestershire Rutland Stockwell Head Hinckley Leicestershire LE10 1RD Tel: 01455 637587 Email: christinedallas@emmauslandr.org Website: www.emmauslandr.org Emmaus Leicestershire Rutland is a homelessness charity with a difference, providing more than just a bed for the night for people who have experienced homelessness and social exclusion. For many people who experience homelessness, one of the biggest obstacles they must overcome is a loss of self esteem. Emmaus provides an opprtunity to regain this, with a chance to make a real contribution to their community.Emmaus communities are not hostels for the homeless; they provide a home as long as someone needs it. For many, this support and stability is like the family they don’t have, providing a safe environment in which to settle and rebuild their lives. Often this is a opportunity to overcome issues or rebuild relationships with estranged family. Emmaus is not about giving hand outs, it’s about providing an opportunity for each individual to overcome homelessness. Social enterprise is central to the Emmaus model as it provides meaningful work for companions but also generates funding to maintain communities. Companions are expected to work for 40 hours per week, or to the best of their ability, in the charity’s social enterprise and are required to sign of all benefits, with the exception of housing benefit, which is claimed to help support the community. This approach has been proven to produce long term, sustainable results, and for many who have been stuck in a cycle of homelessnes, offers the support they need to overcome this. For every £1 spent with Emmaus there is a £11 social, economic and environmental return on investment. This was the finding of a Social Return on Investment study carried out on behalf of Emmaus. The research showed that Emmaus can deliver a significant impact, with savings to the healthcare system, a reduction in crime, reoffending and savings to the benefits bill.

  • 29. 29 Groups • H High Impact Education Services Ltd 14 Smyth Close Market Harborough Leicestershire LE16 7NS Tel: 01858 468115 Email: alisonrockett@yahoo.com We run lunch and after-school Enterprise Clubs in which students re-design and re-construct recycled, natural, donated and low- cost materials into high-quality craft products that they sell at school and community events. The aim of the club is to raise confidence, improve social relationships and team skills and develop a strong sense of pride and achievement. Very effective with those vulnerable to educational disengagement. Rolling recycled paper into jewellery features highly at the start of the sessions; the club members learn about a group of women in Uganda who produce paper jewellery as an alternative to their dangerous work breaking rocks in a stone quarry producing gravel for a living. The members link with the Ugandan beadmakers through letters and photos and model their own jewellery after them. They go on to produce other up-cycled crafts like origami flowers, embellished vases, pencil holders, seasonal wreaths. The participants learn enterpise skills such as costing, pricing, marketing, labelling, displaying, demonstrating to the public, talking to customers, making change, reinvesting profits. During the year the participants also produce and donate educational resources to Early Years settings such as counting lines made from garden wire and plastic milk bottle tops, flash cards from recycled Xmas cards, beanbags. Members of the public get involved in supporting the young people through donating their recyclables.
