ViГ±a San Pedro
ViГ±a San Pedro
ViГ±a San Pedro (VSP) was the third largest winery in Chile, with 1998 sales of 37 billion
Chilean pesos (CP). Bonifacio Correa had planted the original vines with French stock in 1865
on the farm in Molina that the family had owned since 1701. For years, VSP wines enjoyed a
reputation of being one of the finest in the country, and the vineyard remained in the Correa family
until 1941. New owners expanded the vineyard so that by 1994, 1,150 hectares1 were in
production, making it the largest single site vineyard in the country. It was, however, barely
profitable and survived primarily by producing inexpensive wines for the domestic market.

independent growers.
CCU had also assumed responsibility for the distribution of VSP wines in all but the most remote
areas of Chile and quintupled the number of customers to 30,000. Domestic sales increased by 29
percent between 1995 and 1996, although a 5.5 percent rise in the average price for a case of wine
sold had contributed to this increase. In 1996, after three years of losses, VSP finally boasted a
profit of CP 305 million. (See Exhibit 4 for VSP financial statements.)
In 1997, Matias Elton joined VSP as president. A graduate of Georgetown University and
experienced in the U.S. fruit importing industry, he was charged with the task of growing domestic
market share, increasing quality to capture higher margin sales, expanding export sales, and
achieving further economies of scale.
During Elton s first year, another CP 17.7 billion was invested to further increase capacity. New
hectares of vineyards were acquired and planted, storage capacity increased to 36.3 million liters,
and bottling capacity expanded from 22,600 to 25,100 bottles per hour. During the year, VSP s
total production grew to over 44 million liters of wine, 45 percent of which was from its

Harry s Touch On My Cheek
There s only a week of spring break left now. You can t just spend it hiding in your room. With his
hands placed behind his back, Harry effortlessly stands to peer over me with his tall frame.
I can and I will. I turn my head away from Harry and hug my knees closer to my chest. I tightly
grip a hold of my turquoise covers and attempt to pull them over my head. As much as I wish I
could stay hidden under my bed covers forever, the weather was honestly getting too warm for that.
Stopping my wrist from throwing the bed cover over my face, Harry turns his head to meet my
unstable eyes again. He takes my cheek in his oversized palms and guides my head to face his
direction. Hey, look at me. What s going on?
Harry s touch on my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Just as I thought I was getting away, Harry reads my lie. I know you re lying, Ivy.
I m not! Flustered by Harry s keen senses, my voice comes out much louder than I intend.
Harry smirks at my inept ability to lie. He raises a brow. Oh, really?
I ferociously defend myself and my lie. Really!
If you really have everything under control, come over for dinner with Liam and Niall. You re
slacking off on the whole fake girlfriend business. Harry challenges.
I can t, because.... Because... I lick my dry lips. My mouth rushes to form words, but nothing
seems to escape. I had to say something. I needed an excuse as to why I did not want to leave my
house. But, my words come out as a blank canvas.
Harry smirks again. Because why, Ivy? He cocks his head to the side, appearing like some greek
god. I thought you had everything under control. His voice adds an emphasis to the word everything.
I begin stammering again. I do have everything control. It s just that...
Just what? Harry asks with a sarcasm behind his words.
You know... just the typical stuff.
Like what? Harry raises a brow.
Slowly, I draw my hand from under the covers. I flick my wrist to launch a middle finger at Harry s
eye level and send him mean glare. Go to hell, Styles.
Instantly, Harry s faces seems to radiate at my remark. Happily. Harry twinks. I ll meet you there!

The Decline Of Organized Religion In Western Civilization
Altemeyer, Bob. The Decline of Organized Religion in Western Civilization. International Journal
for the Psychology of Religion, vol. 14, no. 2, Apr. 2004, pp. 77 89. EBSCOhost,
search.ebscohost.com The practice of organized religion has been declining greatly since the mid
20th century, but the pace in which religionis dying is not constant in every western country.
Ireland is the only country where most people attend a religious event weekly, on the other hand,
less than ten percent of Scandinavians attend religious events. Organized religion is dying
where it once was common in everyday life, which is bad news for church leaders who want to
fill their seats. From 1945 to 1985 the percent of regular church attendees in Canada dropped in
half, from 70% to 35%. Although people have stopped associating themselves with a religion,
many of them still believe in a creator. Around 32 percent of America s population attends church
weekly, but 66 percent of Americans have no doubt that there is a God, and another 16 percent
believe in a God but have doubts (Altemeyer 79). There is evidence that the recent rise of religious
apostasy occurred because of backlash against the Religious Right , the christian fundamentalists
that are known to be anti homosexual. Many people are turned off by these beliefs and severed
their already weak relationships with the church. Children are also not being taught religious beliefs
because of parents who have left the faith. Parents have stopped

How Did The Cash Register Change The World
Imagine running a business without a cash register. Imagine how unorganized, chaotic, and
difficult it would be to handle money through every employee without the cash register. This is
no longer a problem for any business anymore thanks to James Ritty. The cash register was
invented in 1879 by James Ritty, a saloonkeeper in Dayton, Ohio. (thecorememory.com). The
prototype machine had a large, clock like face and a row of keys for entering amounts from 5
cents to 95 cents (by fives) and from $1 to $9. A mechanism inside the machine recorded total sales.
(americanhistory.si.edu). This was how the first cash registerworked, and was the base model for
many more to come. He created this invention because he believed that his employees were
stealing money from his saloon, and with the cash register being invented, they no longer can.
Finally, the cash register was the most important invention in American history, due to its major
impact on businesses around the world. After the cash register was invented, it became a huge
success. Before, few business owners actually knew if they were operating at a profit or a loss
(thecorememory.com), and now companies can easily see how much money they are making, and
what they... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, there are many positive impacts that it has. An example of this is how it prevents employees
from pilfering money from the manager. There is also some people that despise the cash register,
and those people are the employees that were taking the money before. Finally, the evolvement of
the cash register from Ritty s model to the electronic model, was very important to each society that
it evolved through. All in all, without the cash register, small businesses will crumble from loss of
profit, and the economy would go into a downfall without the invention of the cash

My Dream Story
The story behind me is very long. Lots of stupid things have been done that are very very stupid. I
would say it all began 17 years ago in a hospital but, that s going to be a lot of work to type a paper.
I m going to start this wonderful life, last year school year. Near the end so all the fun of my life
begins. To present day where I continue to do the stuff that makes people mad but it is very fun for
me. It was an early morning in the month of May near the end of the day and I was in my Civics
class. We were working on our budget project and I was down in the library with a few other
people. Believe it or not I got bored really really quick. When I was walking back I was walking on
paper all the way back up to class because I was told do it so I did. When I got back to class my
teacher gave me a very weird look and didn t say a word. I kept asking, What I can t touch the
ground. She didn t say a single word. Just a few days later within the month of May, it was a cool
warm night. Where everything was perfect on how it was. No wind, a solid 78 degrees, all by a
bonfire around 11 at night. We were sitting there talking and out of nowhere I just got up and
decided to walk across the fire for no reason. Everyone looked at me very weirdly. All I asked was,
What? My friend Owen just said, You re dumb why would you even do that? All I could come up
with was, Why not? He just looked away and laughed. After walking over that fire over and over

United States Agricultural Stakeholder Views And Actions...
Executive Summary
The following literature review summarizes research on United States agricultural stakeholder
views and actions towards climate change, including extreme weather, adaptation and mitigation
measures, and climate forecasting tools. The majority of references discussed are from 2000 2015
and are peer reviewed journal articles containing surveys and interviews; we also include relevant
non peer reviewed reports. The review focuses on the attitudes and actions of United States farmers,
ranchers, university researchers, extension educators, agriculture advisors, and other agricultural
stakeholders towards climate change. We focus particularly on the literature assessing stakeholders

Conventionality vs Instinct in Daisy Miller and The...
Henry James s Daisy Miller and Kate Chopin s The Awakening were first published twenty one
years apart, the former in 1878 and the latter in 1899. Despite the gap of more than two decades,
however, the two works evince a similarity of thought and intent that is immediately evident in their
main themes. Both works display characters whose lives have been governed almost solely by the
conventions of their respective societies. Furthermore, both works also attempt to demonstrate to
the reader what happens when these conventions are challenged by individual instincts, which more
often than not are in direct contradiction to the dictates of convention.
The theme of conventionality versus instinct predominates both works. In ... Show more content on

Winterbourne and Daisy, in fact, represent two vastly different ways of looking at the same world.
He views reality in very conventional terms. Daisy has an unconventional perception of life and
reality in Europe, and she acts accordingly. Winterbourne is stiff, though worldly. Daisy is
spontaneous and naive. It is no coincidence that she is dressed in white when we first meet her.
James intends us to understand that she is very innocent, if only of European conventions.
James reinforces Daisy s unconventionality almost immediately. When Winterbourne first meets her
we are told, In Geneva, as he had been perfectly aware, a young man was not at liberty to speak to a
young unmarried lady except under certain rarely occurring conditions (James 131). But Daisy
flouts this convention immediately upon their first meeting. She not only speaks with him,
unchaperoned, but makes a date to go with him to the old castle, also unchaperoned.
Winterbourne is at a loss. He does not know how to react to Daisy. James explains that
Winterbourne had lost his instinct in this matter, and his reason could not help him (137). He does
not understand Daisy, and so he reverts to his conventional views and tries to categorize Daisy in
conventional terms.
By this point the reader has realized that although the work is entitled Daisy Miller, it is really the
story of Winterbourne s internal struggle. Daisy is the

Essay on Life, Death, What Dreams May Come
Unconditional love can be described as a pure affection bereft of circumstance. It is a true positive
regard of others that bares no judgment. In a sense, unconditional love has no boundaries. In the
film What Dreams May Come, the boundary between life and death fades and a family s bond is
tested. Tragedy by tragedy, unconditional loveand guiltplay major roles in the defiance of the laws
of death. Chris Nielsen, the main character of the film, travels to the depths of the afterlife to find
his beloved wife Annie and restore his family. In an epic journey that questions the very fabric of
reality and faith, the Nielson family overcomes all odds and is reunited in the end. Throughout the
film, unconditional love is represented in the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Nielson s genuine compassion for their young makes it exceptionally difficult to lose Marie
and Ian later on. When both children are killed in a car accident on the way to school, the chain
of misfortune begins to claim the family. Annie, who had the nanny bring the kids to school that
morning due to a work commitment, blamed herself for the loss of her children. When the lives
of children are taken too soon, it is as if they are cheated of having a chance at life, and the parents
are punished for no reason. Upon realizing this, Annie is institutionalized for depression and
suicidal tendencies. The film clearly shows Annie s devastation by her appearance. Her long, brown
hair is now chopped short and she smokes cigarettes. This physical deterioration coincides with the
emotional trauma that occurs when a child dies. The loss of her children infected her heart with an
unwarranted guilt that made her question her faith in herself, her religion, and her marriage. When
Chris mentions getting a divorce because she is so lifeless, she realizes that losing the only love
left in her life would kill her. Their unconditional love is strengthened by the loss and Annie learns
to forgive herself over time. Forgiveness is often the first step, whether in saving a marriage or a
long term emotional healing process. The next life that is lost occurs on the

Disruption Reflection
For my global engagement event, I attended the showing of the film, Disruption, followed by a
brief discussion session. This movie aired at Global Commons sponsored by the Office of
Sustainability at Elon University, specifically their student Eco Reps. The event began at seven o
clock on Tuesday, September 19th.
This film depicts the devastating effects of human activity in modern society on the environment
resulting in global climate change creating extreme weather events such as floods, tornadoes,
droughts, and hurricanes. Change in Earth s overall temperature is difficult to conceptualize
because its long term effects do not present urgency in most people s minds; consequentially, the
film discloses the lack of concern for environmental issues throughout government agencies and
most citizens. Even with the recent international industrial pledge to reduce carbon dioxide
emissions, the objectives are poorly defined and lack the intensity to reverse the damage.
Incorporating both the scientific and governmental explanation of climate change, the film
illustrates the tremendous positive impact civilian activists can accomplish. For example, the
activists are planning the first major climate change march and rallying local citizens behind a
common goal to create meaningful change. Following the movie the Eco Reps initiated a
discussion session regarding Elon s impact on the environment and specific ways students can alter
their habits to make positive change such as recycling, turning off electronics when not in use, and
eating less meat. Although most of the students were impressed with the measures Elon
incorporates to be sustainable, I think the majority of the student body during their daily lives do
not consider environmental issues; thus, students perspectives on climate change need to be altered.
I selected this topic because I am passionate about reducing climate change and limiting its
devastating effects on our planet; hence, I attempt to spread my knowledge and concerns to
persuade others to work together for an effective solution to mitigate its effects. Not only am I an
Environmental Studies major but also as a Public Health student I am interested in the cross section

The Marketing Mix Of Marketing
Marketing is essentially the act of creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings
that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large. There are many important
components of marketing, including the marketing mix. Generally, the marketing mix refers to the
4 P s, product, price, place and promotion. Place is also referred to distribution, which is what will
be discussed in the subsequent sections. Alternative strategies relating to distribution will be
presented, a final strategy will be selected and the reasoning behind the choosing will be discussed.
The alternative strategies will revolve around marketingchannel, direct and retailer. Distribution
intensity, exclusive and intensive along with channel intermediaries will be discussed in
conjunction. Additionally, it should be noted that this discussion of distribution revolves around a
backpack that is to be targeted at Outdoor Enthusiasts, in the simulation, Marketing Practice. It
should be noted that intensive distribution was not a considered strategy due to the inability to
successfully apply this intensity in the simulation given the target segment and product price.
A marketing channel is a set of interdependent organisations that facilitate the transfer of ownership
as products move from producer to consumer. There are different types of marketing channels, some
of which utilise channel intermediaries, which are individuals or firms that link producers to other
intermediaries or

History of the Horn
Horns as we know them today are the result of centuries of tradition. The history of this instrument
is particularly interesting because it wasn t used as a traditional musical instrument until not so
long algo. Just like early recording technology and synthesizers, the first horn models were rejected
by the public in their time and it took many years before they became popular. This essay will
summarize the history of the horn, from its predecessors to what it has become today.
During the beginning of mankind, instruments were carved out from animal horns to serve mainly

order to shift the natural harmonic series from a basic key to another . It basically depended on
the player to slide the cylinders in order to align the valves into different positions thus creating
different pathways for air to flow. This would produce a set of new whole and half notes as the

Armed Police Uniforms
Armed police officers create discrimination?
Do you think police officers should be armed if their job is to protect schools? Many will argue
yes because of safety reasons, but what if that leads to bigger problems? This has been a debate
for years and has caused to create many rules that have or have not worked. For example the Gun
Free schools Act or the zero tolerance policies. Although it protects students and can create a safe
and secure environment, police officers in schools should not be armed because it can create
discrimination, officers will feel with more power and authority, and take away student s education.
However, many might think police officers should be armed in case of an emergency. There has
been many incidents where shootings occurs at schools and the police officer s job is to protect
themselves and the lives of students and staff at any cost. You can argue this to be a good
reason to allow police officers to carry weapons. They feel they should be armed for protection,
but many police officers take advantage of that and feel they have the power to do anything, even
to break a law. It is not right for police officers to think they can break laws because everyone is
equal and having armed police officers will damage students in other ways.
Police officers do contribute to an environment of discrimination. Immigration has been a big
problem in our society because people like Donald Trump, for example, think immigrants got here
to destroy the country.

Expansion in to the production line type environment is strictly discouraged. It has been shown

hurdle from this concept to being known only for the food quality is too costly and may prove to
be unsuccessful in the future. At the same time, the name would have to display the Benihana
name to promote that quality. If this concept were to fail, this could later have a damaging effect
upon the Benihana name itself. Therefore, it is recommended that the product line concept be
discarded. Modifications within the Benihana model could also prove to be very costly. The side
effects could prove disastrous to the name as well as take away from the three pointed model. By
changing the interior or the service team, Rocky would be

Essay about Prospera, Thy Role Is Woman
William Shakespeare, in his play, The Tempest, tells the story of a fictional exiled Duke of
Milan. In the original play, Shakespeare casts the duke as a man, Prospero. In a modern movie
version of the play, writer and director Julie Taymor casts the duke as a woman, Prospera
powerfully portrayed by the very convincing performance of Helen Mirren. The play, surprisingly,
requires only a few very minor line changes to substitute a woman lead for the original male role.
While the actual dialogue changes are minor, the impact to the play is substantial as it totally
transforms the duke and an audience s prospective of the character. With very few exceptions,
having a woman as the Duke of Milan in Shakespeare s The Tempest, makes the duke more... Show

The first examples can be seen in Prospera s ouster and exile starting with how apparently easily
Prospera was usurped. It is clear Prospera had the support of her people when she tells Miranda,
so dear the love my people bore me (Shakespeare 1.2.141). If the duke had the support of the
people and magical arts to manipulate people and events, it seems unlikely a rightful ruler could
so easily be usurped, but it becomes more plausible in Taymor s version where the position was
only assumed by Prospera upon her husband s death. Given it was not originally her position to
begin with and the predominant acceptance of male leaders at that time, it is much more realistic
that a woman could be usurped by her brother. Similarly, the fact that Prospera was not killed
outright and that she was aided by Gonzalo also becomes more believable with the duke being a
woman. To kill an ousted rival would seem of little consequence at the time if that rival were a
man, but it takes on a much less noble air if that rival is a woman, and Gonzalo s actions to aid
Prospera defying Antonio and the king become more believable as it is not only an act of kindness,
but also a chivalrous act.
In addition to Prospera s ouster and exile, other examples of where having a feminine duke is
more believable can be seen by her actions on the island. One of the first is Prospera s treatment of
Caliban. After

Although Aloha followed the manufacturers advised general Maintenance Planning Programme, its
management did not implement the specific SBs. Consequently, during the standard inspection
activities sporadic cracks and first signs of panel bond disintegration were not identified within the
safe crack growth period. It has been debated whether the standard maintenance programme
(including four level of Checks, A B C D, at different level of inspection detail and frequency)
could have revealed the specific failures in question. The answer is negative: Aloha`s on ground
examinations were made mainly during night, with limited visual inspection conditions and
alertness to identify sporadic rivet cracks. (National Transportation Safety Board, 1989) In sum, the
aircraft damage tolerance had become seriously limited which resulted in the catastrophic wear out
failure. C. Human errors and organizational failures
As highlighted before, the investigation identified several types of human failures, including
inspection errors and violations of operational procedures. According to Hobbs, maintenance
management is critical to ensure aviation safety, and improper maintenance contributes as primary
cause to a significant (7 14 %) proportion of aviation accidents and incidents. (Hobbs, 2008)
However, individual failures in maintenance activities are usually not the root causes of failures but

Thomas
I can relate to Thomas because of these four ways. Thomas was doubtful and worked hard at finding
out the truth. He helped out others believe in Jesus even though they have never seen Him. He
taught about Jesus to others. And he struggled a lot throughout his life with Jesus.
Thomas doubted and so he worked hard at finding out the truth. He always doubted because of his
faith, he wanted to see with his own eyes instead of believing what he wanted to see. For
example when Jesus was crucified on the cross he was speared in the chest and nailed to the
cross from his wrists. When Jesus was resurrected He visited the group of disciples but Thomas
wasn t with the group at the time. So when Thomas came to them they told him about the good
news but he didn t believe them unless he saw and felt Jesus wounds in his wrists and chest.
Jesus then invited Thomas to see Him so he did and Thomas felt his wounds and believed. The way
I work hard is my schedule; I have to wake up go to swim practice from 5:00 to 7:00. Then I have
to go to school for six hours and do a lot of assignments for each class. After each class they assign
homework which usually takes another two hours after school. Then I have to go to swim
practice again for another two hours. When I m finished with practice I have to go eat dinner,
then I go home around 8:00 8:30. I have to do my homework which takes forever and go to bed
late and wake up early the next morning for practice. It s hard to do mostly because of the
amount of school work we have. When I have to wake up for practice it makes it even harder
because I put in all my effort and end up tired before school and makes it harder to concentrate.
Then after school I have to practice really hard again, and by the time I get home I m exhausted
and just want to go to sleep, but I have to stay up and do a lot of homework. I keep doubting that
I won t be able to get my work done on time or work hard at practice. I just try to do my best at
either my school work or swimming no matter what.
Thomas was an inquisitive man. Thomas curious mind led him to doubt God s work in the world,
but also led him to discover answers to his questions, which led him to

Second Wave Of Feminism In Canada
Feminism has been discussed throughout the last century as women are began to prioritize their
rights within their society. The first period of significant feminist activity was the first wave of
feminism around 1850 1900, primarily focusing on women s suffrage. It was not until the 1960s
that second wave of feminismcame to be. This wave of feminism achieved visibility for women in
Canada and played a significant role in the liberation of women while contributing to other causes.
The concentration on disarmament, misogyny, sexual violence, reproductive and equal rights were
vital to the emancipation of women and minorities.
The second wave of feminism concentrates on liberation, although it played a significant role in
anti war and environmental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women worked tirelessly to challenge misogyny in education. The formation of women s
studies introduced women to disciplines like language, philosophy, psychology, and history and
opened doors for female STEM majors (Encyclopedia). Women campaigned for educational
reforms throughout education careers, and demanded changes in curricula and teaching forces
to ensure that women were getting the same education as men. Some changes include home
economics and survival courses not being gendered courses and the same curriculum for
physical education classes. These changes in the education system made sexism in the new
generations less common, a significant change from the previous generation. Women also
demanded to be equal in men within the work environment. Domestic labour remained their
responsibility in society, and if women are working they would be given incredibly lower wages
than their male counterparts and little to no benefits. In 1951, women and men were able to get
equal pay, yet there were no significant changes to the wage gap. Over the years women
condemned the gendered pay gap (Encyclopedia) as well as other issues such as separation and
divorce rights, discrimination in labour codes and restriction on married women. During a
divorce, women were not entitled to an equal share of property until 1980, where the legislation
recognized an equal division of property upon separation or divorce (Heritage). According to
UFCW Canada, it was not until 1971 that women in the military were able to keep their jobs when
they got married, as the changes to the labour code prohibits sex discrimination. As second wave of
feminism came to an end, women across Canada were making more money, receiving benefits and

Essay on Sayo Masuda’s Autobiography of a Geisha
Sayo Masuda s Autobiography of a Geisha
Autobiography of a Geisha was originally written for a memoir competition run by the Japanese
magazine Housewife s Companion. Sayo Masuda wrote and submitted her manuscript in hopes of
winning the monetary prize offered. She won second place in the competition and came to the
attention of an editor who helped her expand her story and publish it as a book. Riding on the
wave of interest stirred by Arthur Golden s Memoirs of a Geisha, G. G. Rowley translated Sayo
Masuda s tale for the American market.
Rowley did an excellent job of capturing Masuda s voice in his translation. If English had been
Masuda s native language, the result might easily have been Rowley s translation. Masuda s tale ...

Readers will also come away with an understanding of the hot spring geisha s life, but caution
should be taken. It is easy, as many critics have done, to presume that Masuda s tale is the
unvarnished truth about the entire geisha world, rather than merely the unvarnished truth about a
part of it. Reviewer Kimberly Shearer Palmer wrote that Autobiography of a Geisha resolves the
ambiguity over whether or not geisha are prostitutes... [Masuda] leaves little doubt in the reader
s mind that even the most talented geisha are forced to sleep with men for money, a fact glossed
over in many accounts of the profession. (14). Palmer leaves little doubt in the minds of those
who read her review that she takes Masuda s experiences of geisha life as true for all classes of
geisha, regarding sources such as Mineko Iwasaki s Geisha, A Life as tainted. Many other
reviewers follow in the same vein, calling reports of higher class geisha s lives romanticized
(Napier) and Hollywood version[s] (Gavin). Perhaps these attitudes stem from a culture clash which
prevents many Americans from understanding the differences between Japanese prostitutes and
geisha, and the gradations within the flower and willow world. The tendency seems to be to lump
all geisha together with the term prostitute, an attitude which is all too eager to use Masuda s
biography to support generalized, culturally skewed assumptions about geisha.

After Oedipus dies, his two sons (Antigone s brothers) take charge and share the crown. They
take turns every year having the throne and taking control. When Eteocles got the power he
didn t want to give it up to Polynices. Since he wouldn t give Polyneices the throne they decided
to fight. When they did they killed each other simultaneously. Both of the Kings were dead.
After this Eteocles had a proper burial while Polynices was left to rot and be eaten by animals.
When Antigone heard about this, she got very upset. She said The slain man was no villain but a

Essay Overview of Dementia
Dementia is a syndrome, which is usually of a chronic or progressive nature, which causes
deterioration in cognitive function. It goes beyond what is expected from normal aging. It
causes changes in what you remember, like appointments, or phone numbers. It may cause you
to get lost in a familiar setting like driving to the grocery store. You may not be able to balance
your checkbook or add up your points in a card game. Communication becomes difficult; as you
cannot find the words you want to say. Your personality may change, you may become paranoid,
be crabby or short tempered, and you may say or do inappropriate things or laugh when nothing is
funny. Dementia is one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people...

Even though people with dementia can stay fully conscious, they have loss of short and long
term memory partially or in full. These people may also have difficulty expressing themselves
or making themselves understood. They may not be able to follow patterns or recipes even
though they may have hundreds of times before. They may not realize what time it is or what
season it is. They may even get lost on the way home from the grocery store. The majority of
dementia is not inherited, but it depends a lot on the particular cause of dementia. Some rare
causes of dementia are inherited, like Huntington s disease. This is an autosomal dominant
disease, which means that only one faulty copy of the gene is needed to inherit the disease
(Living with dementia magazine April 2009 n.d). If someone had an inherited disease and lived
long enough, they could pass it on and it wouldn t skip a generation. Dementia affects each
person in a different way, depending on the impact of the disease and the person s personality
before he/she became ill. The signs and symptoms that are linked to dementia can be understood in
three stages. There are the early stages, middle stages, and late stages. The early stages of dementia
are almost always overlooked since the onset is gradual. The symptoms are familiar to us all, like
misplacing items, forgetting appointments not being aware of the time. As dementia reaches the

The Pathology of Whitenes in Pym, by Mat Johnson
Mat Johnsons novel, Pym challenges readers not only to view his work with a new set of eyes but
also the work of all American literature with the understanding that the idea of Whiteness still has a
very strong power over literature today. It is unfortunate that in today s society, the pathology of
Whiteness still holds a very strong presence in literary world. Literature from American authors
versus literature from African Americanauthors still continues to be segregated and handled with
two different sets of criteria. Johnson s novelengages in different aspects of the argument presented
in Toni Morrison s work entitled Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination. One

as diversity committees are put into place to help erase the racial lines that divide American
cultures, if these committees prove to be stagnate and unproductive they are really just keeping
the systems segregated. It is easy to say that you have a diversity committee but if it is not actively
trying to fight against segregation and focusing on all Americans being viewed as one instead of as
different subsets, the committee becomes useless. Instead of the diversity committee representing
change, it is aiding in pathology of Whiteness. Johnson takes Morrison s argument past simply
identifying that Whiteness is still very much dominate in literature today and focuses on ways that
we are still helping it to exist. He challenges the reader to identify the roles they are taking in
keeping this impenetrable whiteness alive and helps them see that they are too affected by the

International Economics The Current Account Deficit Australia
In relation to International Economics the current account deficit Australia has, has been of some
debate in recent years. The current account is the summation of the balance of goods and services
and net income and is a component of the balance of payments alongside the capital and financial
account. When a deficit occurs in the current accountit means that the value of imports (debits) are
exceeding the value of exports (credits). The value of the current account has oscillated between the
period 2008 to current, however despite these oscillations it has remained a deficit during this
period of time. Although a short term CAD may not necessarily be detrimental to the Australian
economy, potentially boosting economic growth beyond its... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Graph 1 shows the trend in the Current account deficit (Economics Update, 2012).
Graph 1
The net primary income is the prevalent contributor to the Current account deficit. The servicing
costs (interest on debt and dividends on shares) on Australia s foreign liabilities are what
predominantly comprise the net primary income deficit. Over the last 20 years the net primary
income deficit has averaged 3.3% of GDP. By December 2011 this increased by 0.1% to 3.2%. of
GDP. Imports and exports encompass what is the Balance of Goods and Services (BOGS). From
2008 09 and 2010 11 the BOGS recorded a surplus of Goods and Services. From 2012 13 the
BOGS recorded a deficit, however from 2013 14 the BOGS entered a surplus again despite the
CAD remaining in a deficit (Graph 2) (Economics Update, 2012).
Graph 2
The current account is affected by both short term factors and long term factors. Periods of
consumer led economic growth, identified by higher consumer spending, particularly on imports
will cause a deficit in the current account. Recessions, on the other hand, lead to improvements and
surpluses. (Pettinger, 2011). The impact of the GFC since 2008 has led to a temporary
improvement in the deficit as consumers cut back on spending (Graph 3).

Importance Of Lack Of Teaching Facilities

resources which are important for in any misunderstanding or difficulties that we might face.

(2012) in Bangladesh and Vongxay (2013) in Laos. They indicated that the number of students in
the class was an issue that made it hard to manage several groups within one class. Such findings
were also emphasised in responding to question 6 in the questionnaire where 68% of the teachers
stated that they had from 20 to 40 students in their classes (see Table 6). This would suggest that
teachers need to divide students into eight or ten groups in order to implement communicative
activities successfully and, thus, it would be difficult to manage all groups.
5.4.7 Examinations
The interviewee teachers indicated that the accountability of Libyan students to examinations is an
issue for an effective integration of CLT in Libyan context. One of the interviewees said:
We as teachers do not have the right to design or adapt the final exams questions as the Ministry of
Education has the responsibility to decide who will design them. This really reflects a negative
influence for students and this makes them concerning only how to pass the exams which are
mostly based on grammar exercises .
Such orientation may lead to negative influence on the process of learning English language. As
this could imply that the focus is shifting from fluency into accuracy which perhaps would be an
issue for both applying CLT effectively and the students outcomes. The findings were similar to

The Weapon Of Betrayal In Greek Mythology
Weapon of Betrayal Trust is one of the most important values in life. In society, everyone puts
their trust in someone such as a friend, a family, or a loved one. But this trust can also be broken
by its opposite of betrayal. Books in the Bible and Greek Mythology consists of many examples of
trust that were broken. The stories that will be used are Samson and Delilah from the Bible and
Jason and Medea from Greek Mythology in which these characters had trustbut broke them with
betrayal. To begin, the story of Jason and Medea from Greek Mythology and the story of Samson

strength, but in return she betrayed him for money; this caused Samson to be captured by the
Philistines. Trust was broken by the weapon of betrayal that Delilah used against Samson for
fortune. In this case, in our society, money is one of the desires of life in which anyone s greed
can take over their minds. Delilah s character was described as a beautiful woman whom Samson
fell in love with and trusted her, but she only played a trick to sabotage Samson by cutting his hair
which gave him his strength. A similar story in mythology is the story of Jason and Medea.

Internal And External Factors That Affect The Corporate...
There is a conflict in the workplace due to both the internal and external factors. With a stressed

ORGANISATIONAL:
When there is reformation and reorganizing taking place in an organization in a short time frame,
leads to subversion of the organization. It occurs due to the following:
(a)Change in organizational structure.
The decision makers are not aware that how reformation and reorganizing process will affect the

cultural change has taken place instantly. Cultural changes will necessitate much more time than
changing the organizational structures. When there are melds or procurements there are clangs in
some segments which leads to aggravation of the employees. So the managers are pleased on these
cultural issues which are handled by the decision formulators of the company.

Brief History Of Basketball Research Paper
One of the greatest sports in the world is goes by the name of basketball. This great game was
invented by James Naismith December of 1891. James Naismith was a physician from Canada
and attended McGill s University in Montreal, Canada. After working as McGill s Athletic director
he went to Springfield, Massachusetts. He introduced the game when he was an instructor at the
Young Men Christian Association Training School in Springfield. He created the game because
he needed to think of something the kids would be able to play during those cold winters, in a
small area. He wanted to come up with something where you wouldn t have to be the strongest but
have to have to be skilled.

As for professional basketball leagues in 1937 Goodyear, Firestone, and General Electric started
up the National Basketball League. This league was formed by industrial teams sponsored by
companies and even independent teams. Mostly all these teams were based in the Midwest. Now
after World War II ended there was a move to establish a true nationwide league. This lead to the
Basketball Association of America being born. Now in 1949 this year was the end of the National
Basketball League and its remaining teams joined the Basketball Association of America. With all
the teams combined the National Basketball Association was formed.
For colleges Ivy League schools such as Yale, Harvard, Cornell, and Princeton formed some of the
earliest college leagues. A group of basketball writers in 1937 from New
York decided to have a basketball tournament. This is how they would name the college national
basketball team. This tournament would the 1 invitation tournament and was held at New York s
Madison Square Garden. This event took place in 1938 and the tournament winner with Temple
becoming the first national champion team. A group of coaches felt that this tournament should be
more centralized so they started their own tournament. It was the year of 1939 when they did so
only a year after the original tournament. The tournament that these coaches started up was then
taking over by the NCAA. It eventually grew into what we call today March Madness.

Importance Of Immersion Essay
Why English immersion works ? Learning a language implies practice and this is what
immersion is all about. Over the years, research has shown the positive outcomes of this method
on our ability to learn a new language. Whilst it may be easy to think that language immersion is
all about living in a foreign country, the truth is that it is actually more about creating an
environment around you. It s all about the way you ll be willing to provoke opportunities to
bring English in your everyday life. Good news (and we ll be bringing a lot today) : English is
one of the easiest language to immerse oneself. Also paramount for your everyday life (in NZ).
Immersion gets you out of your comfort zone (trouver un moyen de centrer sur English)
Travelling taught me that getting out of your comfort zone was always for the best. Well, you
know what ? Same thing goes for language learning! While it s easy and comfy to surround
yourself with people speaking the same language as you, it takes a lot of courage to immerse
yourself in a foreign language environment. And it s what immersion is all about : courage and
(at least at first) discomfort. It is as simple as that : when you don t have another choice but to be
understood you force yourself to communicate and therefore, you can t avoid practicing. Most
language learners are scared to sounds funny and that s the main thing that ll keep people from
talking and practicing. It s even more true when you are trying to learn

Remarque Horrors Of War
Authors compose books so people can receive a new point of view on horrors of war.
Remarque wrote the book All Quiet on the Western Front because he wanted people to realize
that war is a indescribable event that scars and traumatizes people to an extreme degree. The
soldiers are running and diving into and, When he presses himself down upon her long and

Mgm Studios And Stuart Little
Whether the story is about a tiny mouse or a gigantic ogre, there is magic in storytelling and
bringing to life characters that relate their challenges of being unique. By comparing and
contrasting two films, Shrek (2001) by DreamWorks Studios and Stuart Little (1999) by Sony
Studios, the reader will better understand the dynamics of successful family entertainment with
regards to the Disney model . Over the years family appropriate content, style and marketing has
allowed for non Disney produced films to achieve success, but will they ever be as profitable as the
Disney films? The Disney model has created a culture of mega entertainment and expectations, so
that more family entertainment from non Disney companies makes for a greater variety of films,
but not a guarantee of the synergy and ancillary markets to support the films.
The giant company that started as Disney, all began with Walt Disneyarriving in California in
1923. Earlier in Kansas City, he had made a cartoon called Alice s Wonderland which would soon
be the pilot for his series called Alice s Comedies . Disney was contracted by a distributor, M. J.
Winkler, on October 16, 1923, which was the official start of one the largest entertainment
companies to ever exist, Walt Disney Company. Disney went on to produce many short and full
length films suited for family entertainment. Their early full length animation movies in the 1950 s
that captured family viewing were Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland

The Atomic Bomb On Hiroshima
On August 6th, 1945, the Enola gay took off to bomb Japan, changing the world forever. At 8:15
in the morning, a massive, mushroom cloud rose over Hiroshima, Japan killing more than
70,000 people. The first atomic bomb had been used in combat. Then on August 9, another
bomb was sent in by the bomber Bock s Car. It was originally supposed to go to the city of
Kokura, but the weather was bad so it was redirected to Nagasaki killing 40,000 people. With the
death tolls at around 129,000, Japan unconditionally surrendered several days later ending World
War Two. Although, at the same time it put the world into a new generation of war. American
President Harry Truman s controversial choice to drop the atomic bomb on Japan had ended
World War 2 but consequently started the nuclear age. Since the surrender, Truman s choice has
been the subject of a great deal controversy, in large part because of the high civilian death toll.
However, the choice to bomb Japan had ended the long lasting war. Truman s decision to use the
atomic bomb was justifiable by Japan s refusal to give up unconditionally, the cost of the Manhattan
Project, and the high death toll anticipated from an invasion of Japan.
By dropping the Atomic Bomb, The United States was able to save American and Japanese people.
There were two strategic attacks on Japan: Operation Torch and Operation Coronet. Operation
Torch was to attack the island of Kyushu while Operation Coronet was supposed to happen at the

Slim Wallets Research Paper
Why Slim Wallets are Great Clutch Replacements for Women During the day, the average
woman can easily get away with carrying a purse that is big enough to carry virtually anything
needed. This includes a thick clutch or wallet filled with cash, I.D. cards, and credit or debit
cards. Then there are things like hairbrushes, makeup, tissues, keys, and everything but the
kitchen sink. When going out for a night on the town, no one wants to carry this kind of load
around. Slim wallets make a much better option and here is why. Slim Wallets Let You Ditch
the Load When you spend your day carrying a purse that weighs nearly as much as a small
suitcase, the last thing you want to deal with is carrying this load around at night. Face it, when
you are going out for a meal or dancing, you need something much smaller to carry around with
you. Clutches are handy, but may not be the best wallets for that night out. Even if you try to get
away with pulling your clutch out of your purse, you are likely to still be stuck with more of a load
than you need.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Slim wallets such as those in our catalog give you the opportunity to do just that. Depending on
the one you choose, you should have room for your I.D., up to 4 credit or debit cards, and a little

Why Do People Naturally Resist Change
People Naturally Resist Change
Change is an inevitable, it is difficult to ensure it occurs without any problems to your organization.
It is good to understand that resistance to change is a frequent and natural occurrence. The most
common reasons for resisting change are as follows:
Fear of the unknown.
When an organization is being subjected to change and the people have a hard time grasping the
details of the change. Rarely do they understand the impact on them directly, good or bad. This
unknown factor drives people to be naturally fearful. With this in mind leadership should be
prepared in advance for any such change so as to avoid unnecessary surprises (Jones, 2010).Keep in

Peer pressure influence.
It is important that we understand are working with all walks of life. The fact remains that we are
social creatures. Stakeholders in the organization will resist change to protect the interests of a
group (Dent, E.B, Goldenberg, 1999). Employees can resist change so as to protect their co
workers (Oreg, 2003). I have even see where, Managers will resist change to protect their work
group or personal interest of others around them.
Parochial self interest
Virtually all organizational members can be expected to behave in ways that will maximize
those goals that they personally consider most important (Dent, E.B, Goldenberg, 1999). I feel it
is interesting to note proposals for change are interpreted as a threat to a personal status quo.
Individuals as well as groups are likely to resist usually believe they stand to lose something of
value as a result. In these circumstances the members of your organization will focus on the
greater goal only to protect their own self preservation. More often than not we lose site of the
overall good for the organization and lose focus on the overarching goal. Change often tends to
make individuals feel threatened. People are engraved to protect any disruption to power, money,
prestige, convenience, and security
Climate of mistrust.
Important organizational change cannot take place in a climate of mistrust amongst people in the
organization (Jones, 2010). Trust is a two way

Suburban Sitcoms In The 60 s
Suburban sitcoms coming out in the late 50 s early 60 s portrayed usually an average family
with average problems it solves by the end of the episode, most sitcoms including Leave It To
Beaver followed the same formula; two white parents, a mother, and father, and 2 3 children;
every episode followed the same steps, there s a problem, the problem is solved by the end of
the episode, and a lesson is learned by the main character. This held up perfectly in the 50 s and
60 s society, but sitcoms needed to adapt to fit their society, as time progressed, more important

Analysis Of Smc Based Variable Speed Phase Controlled Dc...
Analysis of SMC based Variable Speed Phase Controlled dc Drive for its Speed Range

Aligarh, UP, India
Email: m_ali.rs@amu.ac.in
Abstract The paper presents an analytic insight into the speed control of a dc Motor drive using a
more stout, prompt and stabilized technique than conventionally used. The desired dynamics are
difficult to achieve with conventional controllers. New techniques are attempted in the literature to
get the desired performance. Here, Sliding Mode Control a robust and non linear control, is
considered. Its understanding is simple and the performance of the whole drive system is found to
be much enhanced as compared to the conventional Proportional Integral Control method. In this
paper, analysis of the dc drive is done when subjected to different circumstances of speed variations
as well as load variations. It is then established that the range of speed under which the drive can
operate without changing the parameters of the controllers, is much wider with the Sliding Mode
Control.
Keywords dc Motor, PI Control, SMC, VSC, Matlab/Simulink Introduction
Dc Motors were once the only devices known to convert electrical energy to mechanical energy or
vice versa. Although they were inherited successfully by ac motors and vector control drives; they
still show promising advantages like reliability, cost effectiveness, and moreover operator
friendliness.

Wicca vs. Scientology
At first glance, Wicca and Scientology may appear to be completely opposite religions, sharing no
common tenets or practices. Contrary to this, both systems of beliefs actually share several
distinctive qualities that set them apart from many major religions in the world.
First, Wicca, the formal organization of witchcraft, is a mystery religion. Each practitioner is
considered a witch, and practitioner of The Craft, which contains several different beliefs
concerning theology and divinity depending on an individual because of their freedom to study
what they seek. Members may choose to be solitary, or part of a coven, which is a group of
Wiccans that share beliefs and conduct rituals together. Though different groups of Wiccamay ...

they are able to achieve ultimate completion and enlightenment. Also, an important aspect of
Scientology is freedom, and is expressed as one s ultimate attainable goal. Likewise within the
Wicca religion, freedom is expressed by individuals through their seeking of truth, and in the
Wiccan Rede, which basically states that Wiccan are free to act as they please as long as it

existence of one God and the one superior Goddess, which would be considered dualistic. In
contrast, other groups of Wiccans are polytheistic, believing in several different deities that
serve different functions in their religion. Finally, other groups may suppose that all goddesses

Summary Of Corn Pone Opinions
The essay by Mark Twain, Corn pone Opinions, describes how many people follow the directions
of others whether they agree with it or not. Also through it s contrasting conformities and
independent verdict of people s ways of thinking, Twain suggests that in order for people to
express how they truly are, they must first trust their own abilities without having to depend on
others. This signifies that every person must have a friend or relative critique his or her style to

The Tower of London has performed many tasks for the country, these ranging from palace,
fortress, prison, and even mint. In this paper, I shall cover a portion of the history of the Tower of
London, and delve into several specific stories about the Tower of London. Construction of the
Tower of London first began in the 1070 s due to the invasion of Englandby William the
Conqueror. The original building was a single tower, and was used by William the Conqueror to

However, these improvements by William did not last long, as John, the brother of the king,

The expansions of the Tower continued with the addition of the Bell Tower and the Wardrobe
Tower. The Bell Tower held a bell at the top of the tower and was used to warm of emergencies,
while the Wardrobe Tower, naturally, was used to house clothes and jewelry. The next
expansions did not happen until King Henry III began to build both the Lanthorn and Wakefield
Towers in the 1200 s. The Lanthorn Tower housed a lantern in the top of the tower and was built
to help ships navigate the Thames River. The Wakefield tower contained the King s private room
and was designed as a strongpoint for the Tower of London. After the completion of these two
towers, King Henry III continued the expansion of the complex with a new defensive wall and
several more towers. Among the towers built was the famous Bloody Tower. The Bloody Tower,
as it is known today, was not originally known by this name. Originally, the tower was called the
Garden Tower due to its connection to an adjacent garden. Finally, with the addition of an elephant

  • 2. ViГ±a San Pedro ViГ±a San Pedro ViГ±a San Pedro (VSP) was the third largest winery in Chile, with 1998 sales of 37 billion Chilean pesos (CP). Bonifacio Correa had planted the original vines with French stock in 1865 on the farm in Molina that the family had owned since 1701. For years, VSP wines enjoyed a reputation of being one of the finest in the country, and the vineyard remained in the Correa family until 1941. New owners expanded the vineyard so that by 1994, 1,150 hectares1 were in production, making it the largest single site vineyard in the country. It was, however, barely profitable and survived primarily by producing inexpensive wines for the domestic market. CompaГ±a Cervecerias Unidas In 1994, CompaГ±a Cervecerias Unidas S.A. (CCU), a ... CCU had also assumed responsibility for the distribution of VSP wines in all but the most remote areas of Chile and quintupled the number of customers to 30,000. Domestic sales increased by 29 percent between 1995 and 1996, although a 5.5 percent rise in the average price for a case of wine sold had contributed to this increase. In 1996, after three years of losses, VSP finally boasted a profit of CP 305 million. (See Exhibit 4 for VSP financial statements.) In 1997, Matias Elton joined VSP as president. A graduate of Georgetown University and experienced in the U.S. fruit importing industry, he was charged with the task of growing domestic market share, increasing quality to capture higher margin sales, expanding export sales, and achieving further economies of scale. During Elton s first year, another CP 17.7 billion was invested to further increase capacity. New hectares of vineyards were acquired and planted, storage capacity increased to 36.3 million liters, and bottling capacity expanded from 22,600 to 25,100 bottles per hour. During the year, VSP s total production grew to over 44 million liters of wine, 45 percent of which was from its ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Harry s Touch On My Cheek There s only a week of spring break left now. You can t just spend it hiding in your room. With his hands placed behind his back, Harry effortlessly stands to peer over me with his tall frame. I can and I will. I turn my head away from Harry and hug my knees closer to my chest. I tightly grip a hold of my turquoise covers and attempt to pull them over my head. As much as I wish I could stay hidden under my bed covers forever, the weather was honestly getting too warm for that. Stopping my wrist from throwing the bed cover over my face, Harry turns his head to meet my unstable eyes again. He takes my cheek in his oversized palms and guides my head to face his direction. You re slacking off on the whole fake girlfriend business. Harry challenges. I can t, because.... Because... I lick my dry lips. My mouth rushes to form words, but nothing seems to escape. I had to say something. I needed an excuse as to why I did not want to leave my house. But, my words come out as a blank canvas. Harry smirks again. Because why, Ivy? He cocks his head to the side, appearing like some greek god. I flick my wrist to launch a middle finger at Harry s eye level and send him mean glare. Go to hell, Styles.

  • 5. The Decline Of Organized Religion In Western Civilization Altemeyer, Bob. The Decline of Organized Religion in Western Civilization. International Journal for the Psychology of Religion, vol. 14, no. 2, Apr. 2004, pp. 77 89. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com The practice of organized religion has been declining greatly since the mid 20th century, but the pace in which religionis dying is not constant in every western country. Ireland is the only country where most people attend a religious event weekly, on the other hand, less than ten percent of Scandinavians attend religious events. Organized religion is dying where it once was common in everyday life, which is bad news for church leaders who want to fill their seats. From 1945 to 1985 the percent of regular church attendees in Canada dropped in half, from 70% to 35%. Although people have stopped associating themselves with a religion, many of them still believe in a creator. Around 32 percent of America s population attends church weekly, but 66 percent of Americans have no doubt that there is a God, and another 16 percent believe in a God but have doubts (Altemeyer 79). There is evidence that the recent rise of religious apostasy occurred because of backlash against the Religious Right , the christian fundamentalists that are known to be anti homosexual. Many people are turned off by these beliefs and severed their already weak relationships with the church. Children are also not being taught religious beliefs because of parents who have left the faith. Parents have stopped ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. How Did The Cash Register Change The World Imagine running a business without a cash register. Imagine how unorganized, chaotic, and difficult it would be to handle money through every employee without the cash register. This is no longer a problem for any business anymore thanks to James Ritty. The cash register was invented in 1879 by James Ritty, a saloonkeeper in Dayton, Ohio. (thecorememory.com). The prototype machine had a large, clock like face and a row of keys for entering amounts from 5 cents to 95 cents (by fives) and from $1 to $9. A mechanism inside the machine recorded total sales. (americanhistory.si.edu). This was how the first cash registerworked, and was the base model for many more to come. He created this invention because he believed that his employees were stealing money from his saloon, and with the cash register being invented, they no longer can. Finally, the cash register was the most important invention in American history, due to its major impact on businesses around the world. After the cash register was invented, it became a huge success. Before, few business owners actually knew if they were operating at a profit or a loss (thecorememory.com), and now companies can easily see how much money they are making, and what they... There is also some people that despise the cash register, and those people are the employees that were taking the money before. Finally, the evolvement of the cash register from Ritty s model to the electronic model, was very important to each society that it evolved through. All in all, without the cash register, small businesses will crumble from loss of profit, and the economy would go into a downfall without the invention of the cash ... Just a few days later within the month of May, it was a cool warm night. Where everything was perfect on how it was. No wind, a solid 78 degrees, all by a bonfire around 11 at night. We were sitting there talking and out of nowhere I just got up and decided to walk across the fire for no reason. Everyone looked at me very weirdly. All I asked was, What? Henry James s Daisy Miller and Kate Chopin s The Awakening were first published twenty one years apart, the former in 1878 and the latter in 1899. Despite the gap of more than two decades, however, the two works evince a similarity of thought and intent that is immediately evident in their main themes. Both works display characters whose lives have been governed almost solely by the conventions of their respective societies. Furthermore, both works also attempt to demonstrate to the reader what happens when these conventions are challenged by individual instincts, which more often than not are in direct contradiction to the dictates of convention. The theme of conventionality versus instinct predominates both works. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Winterbourne and Daisy, in fact, represent two vastly different ways of looking at the same world. He views reality in very conventional terms. Daisy has an unconventional perception of life and reality in Europe, and she acts accordingly. Winterbourne is stiff, though worldly. Daisy is spontaneous and naive. It is no coincidence that she is dressed in white when we first meet her. James intends us to understand that she is very innocent, if only of European conventions. James reinforces Daisy s unconventionality almost immediately. When Winterbourne first meets her we are told, In Geneva, as he had been perfectly aware, a young man was not at liberty to speak to a young unmarried lady except under certain rarely occurring conditions (James 131). But Daisy flouts this convention immediately upon their first meeting. She not only speaks with him, unchaperoned, but makes a date to go with him to the old castle, also unchaperoned. Winterbourne is at a loss. He does not know how to react to Daisy. James explains that Winterbourne had lost his instinct in this matter, and his reason could not help him (137). He does not understand Daisy, and so he reverts to his conventional views and tries to categorize Daisy in conventional terms. By this point the reader has realized that although the work is entitled Daisy Miller, it is really the story of Winterbourne s internal struggle. Daisy is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Brooke Army Medical Center is also considered the largest inpatient medical facility in the Department of Defense (U.S. Inspector General, 2014). The hospital provides inpatient care in a 2.1 million square foot, 425 bed facility that received nearly 6,000 emergency room visits each month. The Department of Defense continues to see a positive outlook for Brooke Army Medical Center and all the services it offers as a healthcare organization despite its operational financial losses. Although competition is apparent, Brooke Army Medical Center continues to strive at achieving substantial healthcare services provided to veterans and the local community. Brooke Army Medical Center has a budget of $13 billion annually and cares for more than 3.95 million beneficiaries including active duty members of all services, retirees, and their family members (Eastman, et al., 1994). A financial assessment conducted by Bishop Associates in 2004 suggested, that although Brooke Army Medical Center is not profitable the regional medical support provided by the facility is essential to the healthcare needs of South Texas. In a sense, unconditional love has no boundaries. In the film What Dreams May Come, the boundary between life and death fades and a family s bond is tested. Tragedy by tragedy, unconditional loveand guiltplay major roles in the defiance of the laws of death. Chris Nielsen, the main character of the film, travels to the depths of the afterlife to find his beloved wife Annie and restore his family. The Nielson s genuine compassion for their young makes it exceptionally difficult to lose Marie and Ian later on. When both children are killed in a car accident on the way to school, the chain of misfortune begins to claim the family. Annie, who had the nanny bring the kids to school that morning due to a work commitment, blamed herself for the loss of her children. When the lives of children are taken too soon, it is as if they are cheated of having a chance at life, and the parents are punished for no reason. Upon realizing this, Annie is institutionalized for depression and suicidal tendencies. The film clearly shows Annie s devastation by her appearance. Her long, brown hair is now chopped short and she smokes cigarettes. This physical deterioration coincides with the emotional trauma that occurs when a child dies. The loss of her children infected her heart with an unwarranted guilt that made her question her faith in herself, her religion, and her marriage. When Chris mentions getting a divorce because she is so lifeless, she realizes that losing the only love left in her life would kill her. Their unconditional love is strengthened by the loss and Annie learns to forgive herself over time. • 14. Disruption Reflection For my global engagement event, I attended the showing of the film, Disruption, followed by a brief discussion session. This movie aired at Global Commons sponsored by the Office of Sustainability at Elon University, specifically their student Eco Reps. The event began at seven o clock on Tuesday, September 19th. This film depicts the devastating effects of human activity in modern society on the environment resulting in global climate change creating extreme weather events such as floods, tornadoes, droughts, and hurricanes. Change in Earth s overall temperature is difficult to conceptualize because its long term effects do not present urgency in most people s minds; consequentially, the film discloses the lack of concern for environmental issues throughout government agencies and most citizens. Even with the recent international industrial pledge to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, the objectives are poorly defined and lack the intensity to reverse the damage. Incorporating both the scientific and governmental explanation of climate change, the film illustrates the tremendous positive impact civilian activists can accomplish. For example, the activists are planning the first major climate change march and rallying local citizens behind a common goal to create meaningful change. Following the movie the Eco Reps initiated a discussion session regarding Elon s impact on the environment and specific ways students can alter their habits to make positive change such as recycling, turning off electronics when not in use, and eating less meat. Although most of the students were impressed with the measures Elon incorporates to be sustainable, I think the majority of the student body during their daily lives do not consider environmental issues; thus, students perspectives on climate change need to be altered. I selected this topic because I am passionate about reducing climate change and limiting its devastating effects on our planet; hence, I attempt to spread my knowledge and concerns to persuade others to work together for an effective solution to mitigate its effects. The Marketing Mix Of Marketing Marketing is essentially the act of creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large. There are many important components of marketing, including the marketing mix. Generally, the marketing mix refers to the 4 P s, product, price, place and promotion. Place is also referred to distribution, which is what will be discussed in the subsequent sections. Alternative strategies relating to distribution will be presented, a final strategy will be selected and the reasoning behind the choosing will be discussed. The alternative strategies will revolve around marketingchannel, direct and retailer. Distribution intensity, exclusive and intensive along with channel intermediaries will be discussed in conjunction. Additionally, it should be noted that this discussion of distribution revolves around a backpack that is to be targeted at Outdoor Enthusiasts, in the simulation, Marketing Practice. It should be noted that intensive distribution was not a considered strategy due to the inability to successfully apply this intensity in the simulation given the target segment and product price. There are different types of marketing channels, some of which utilise channel intermediaries, which are individuals or firms that link producers to other intermediaries or ... Many will argue yes because of safety reasons, but what if that leads to bigger problems? This has been a debate for years and has caused to create many rules that have or have not worked. For example the Gun Free schools Act or the zero tolerance policies. Although it protects students and can create a safe and secure environment, police officers in schools should not be armed because it can create discrimination, officers will feel with more power and authority, and take away student s education. However, many might think police officers should be armed in case of an emergency. There has been many incidents where shootings occurs at schools and the police officer s job is to protect themselves and the lives of students and staff at any cost. You can argue this to be a good reason to allow police officers to carry weapons. They feel they should be armed for protection, but many police officers take advantage of that and feel they have the power to do anything, even to break a law. It is not right for police officers to think they can break laws because everyone is equal and having armed police officers will damage students in other ways. In the original play, Shakespeare casts the duke as a man, Prospero. In a modern movie version of the play, writer and director Julie Taymor casts the duke as a woman, Prospera powerfully portrayed by the very convincing performance of Helen Mirren. The play, surprisingly, requires only a few very minor line changes to substitute a woman lead for the original male role. While the actual dialogue changes are minor, the impact to the play is substantial as it totally transforms the duke and an audience s prospective of the character. The first examples can be seen in Prospera s ouster and exile starting with how apparently easily Prospera was usurped. It is clear Prospera had the support of her people when she tells Miranda, so dear the love my people bore me (Shakespeare 1.2.141). If the duke had the support of the people and magical arts to manipulate people and events, it seems unlikely a rightful ruler could so easily be usurped, but it becomes more plausible in Taymor s version where the position was only assumed by Prospera upon her husband s death. Given it was not originally her position to begin with and the predominant acceptance of male leaders at that time, it is much more realistic that a woman could be usurped by her brother. Similarly, the fact that Prospera was not killed outright and that she was aided by Gonzalo also becomes more believable with the duke being a woman. To kill an ousted rival would seem of little consequence at the time if that rival were a man, but it takes on a much less noble air if that rival is a woman, and Gonzalo s actions to aid Prospera defying Antonio and the king become more believable as it is not only an act of kindness, but also a chivalrous act. In addition to Prospera s ouster and exile, other examples of where having a feminine duke is more believable can be seen by her actions on the island. He helped out others believe in Jesus even though they have never seen Him. He taught about Jesus to others. And he struggled a lot throughout his life with Jesus. Thomas doubted and so he worked hard at finding out the truth. He always doubted because of his faith, he wanted to see with his own eyes instead of believing what he wanted to see. For example when Jesus was crucified on the cross he was speared in the chest and nailed to the cross from his wrists. When Jesus was resurrected He visited the group of disciples but Thomas wasn t with the group at the time. So when Thomas came to them they told him about the good news but he didn t believe them unless he saw and felt Jesus wounds in his wrists and chest. Jesus then invited Thomas to see Him so he did and Thomas felt his wounds and believed. The way I work hard is my schedule; I have to wake up go to swim practice from 5:00 to 7:00. Then I have to go to school for six hours and do a lot of assignments for each class. After each class they assign homework which usually takes another two hours after school. Then I have to go to swim practice again for another two hours. When I m finished with practice I have to go eat dinner, then I go home around 8:00 8:30. I have to do my homework which takes forever and go to bed late and wake up early the next morning for practice. It s hard to do mostly because of the amount of school work we have. When I have to wake up for practice it makes it even harder because I put in all my effort and end up tired before school and makes it harder to concentrate. Then after school I have to practice really hard again, and by the time I get home I m exhausted and just want to go to sleep, but I have to stay up and do a lot of homework. I keep doubting that I won t be able to get my work done on time or work hard at practice. I just try to do my best at either my school work or swimming no matter what. Thomas was an inquisitive man. Women worked tirelessly to challenge misogyny in education. The formation of women s studies introduced women to disciplines like language, philosophy, psychology, and history and opened doors for female STEM majors (Encyclopedia). Women campaigned for educational reforms throughout education careers, and demanded changes in curricula and teaching forces to ensure that women were getting the same education as men. Some changes include home economics and survival courses not being gendered courses and the same curriculum for physical education classes. These changes in the education system made sexism in the new generations less common, a significant change from the previous generation. Women also demanded to be equal in men within the work environment. Domestic labour remained their responsibility in society, and if women are working they would be given incredibly lower wages than their male counterparts and little to no benefits. In 1951, women and men were able to get equal pay, yet there were no significant changes to the wage gap. Over the years women condemned the gendered pay gap (Encyclopedia) as well as other issues such as separation and divorce rights, discrimination in labour codes and restriction on married women. During a divorce, women were not entitled to an equal share of property until 1980, where the legislation recognized an equal division of property upon separation or divorce (Heritage). It is easy, as many critics have done, to presume that Masuda s tale is the unvarnished truth about the entire geisha world, rather than merely the unvarnished truth about a part of it. Reviewer Kimberly Shearer Palmer wrote that Autobiography of a Geisha resolves the ambiguity over whether or not geisha are prostitutes... [Masuda] leaves little doubt in the reader s mind that even the most talented geisha are forced to sleep with men for money, a fact glossed over in many accounts of the profession. (14). Palmer leaves little doubt in the minds of those who read her review that she takes Masuda s experiences of geisha life as true for all classes of geisha, regarding sources such as Mineko Iwasaki s Geisha, A Life as tainted. Many other reviewers follow in the same vein, calling reports of higher class geisha s lives romanticized (Napier) and Hollywood version[s] (Gavin). Perhaps these attitudes stem from a culture clash which prevents many Americans from understanding the differences between Japanese prostitutes and geisha, and the gradations within the flower and willow world. The tendency seems to be to lump all geisha together with the term prostitute, an attitude which is all too eager to use Masuda s biography to support generalized, culturally skewed assumptions about geisha. • 33. Essay Overview of Dementia Dementia is a syndrome, which is usually of a chronic or progressive nature, which causes deterioration in cognitive function. It goes beyond what is expected from normal aging. It causes changes in what you remember, like appointments, or phone numbers. It may cause you to get lost in a familiar setting like driving to the grocery store. You may not be able to balance your checkbook or add up your points in a card game. Communication becomes difficult; as you cannot find the words you want to say. Your personality may change, you may become paranoid, be crabby or short tempered, and you may say or do inappropriate things or laugh when nothing is funny. Even though people with dementia can stay fully conscious, they have loss of short and long term memory partially or in full. These people may also have difficulty expressing themselves or making themselves understood. They may not be able to follow patterns or recipes even though they may have hundreds of times before. They may not realize what time it is or what season it is. They may even get lost on the way home from the grocery store. The majority of dementia is not inherited, but it depends a lot on the particular cause of dementia. Some rare causes of dementia are inherited, like Huntington s disease. This is an autosomal dominant disease, which means that only one faulty copy of the gene is needed to inherit the disease (Living with dementia magazine April 2009 n.d). If someone had an inherited disease and lived long enough, they could pass it on and it wouldn t skip a generation. Dementia affects each person in a different way, depending on the impact of the disease and the person s personality before he/she became ill. The signs and symptoms that are linked to dementia can be understood in three stages. There are the early stages, middle stages, and late stages. The early stages of dementia are almost always overlooked since the onset is gradual. The symptoms are familiar to us all, like misplacing items, forgetting appointments not being aware of the time. The Pathology of Whitenes in Pym, by Mat Johnson Mat Johnsons novel, Pym challenges readers not only to view his work with a new set of eyes but also the work of all American literature with the understanding that the idea of Whiteness still has a very strong power over literature today. It is unfortunate that in today s society, the pathology of Whiteness still holds a very strong presence in literary world. Literature from American authors versus literature from African Americanauthors still continues to be segregated and handled with two different sets of criteria. It is easy to say that you have a diversity committee but if it is not actively trying to fight against segregation and focusing on all Americans being viewed as one instead of as different subsets, the committee becomes useless. Instead of the diversity committee representing change, it is aiding in pathology of Whiteness. Johnson takes Morrison s argument past simply identifying that Whiteness is still very much dominate in literature today and focuses on ways that we are still helping it to exist.
