A Brief Note On Racial And Ethnic Inequality
Elizabeth Rubio
Professor Alvarez
Sociology 180
March 16, 2016
Racial and Ethnic Inequality What is racial and ethnic inequality? To understand racial and ethnic
inequality you must understand what is considered race and what is considered ethnicity. According to
our textbook, Race can be defined as a group or population that shares a set of genetic characteristics
and physical features meanwhile ethnic groups are set off to some degree from other groups by
displaying a unique set of cultural traits, such as their language, religion, or diet (Leon Guerrero).
When others are treated unjustly, whether it is in the workplace, school, community, public facilities,
etc., due to their race or ethnic group then that is racial and ethnic inequality. One big factor or cause
of this inequality is racism. Racism is the belief in the inferiority of certain racial or ethnic groups,
often accompanied by discrimination (Leon Guerrero). People believe that the color of a person s skin
or certain features of that person make them better than those who have a different color of skin or set
of physical features. They believe that their language and religion is the correct and best meanwhile
the rest are seen as inferior. Those same people think that because of their skin tone or language, they
should have more privileges and rights than those who are different from them. Most of the time,
those people are not part of the minority group and think they are better than those in minority

Internet Addiction By Greg Beato
Internet addiction has become a huge problem in today s society. In Greg Beato s article, he discusses
the growing phenomena of internet addiction disorder. The writer explains that more and more people
are becoming addicted to the internet. For example, he tells of a teenager in Ohio, who shot and killed
his mom and injured his dad because they took away his Xbox. He tells how it is stated that five to ten
percent of the 52 million internet users were addicted. The author is telling us that the internet has
become very addictive in our everyday society. My reaction to what I just read is that I agree with the
writer. Beato writes about the growing phenomena of internet addiction disorder. I think that because
technology has made people live so much easier, that it has made people unable to properly act right
in real life situations without it. I realize that the writer is trying to inform others about what is going
on around them. I believe that the internet has become very addictive in everyday society. I feel that I
can identify with what the author is saying. I feel like I can identify because I can t go anytime without
getting on my laptop. I basically stay on my

Protection Of Extra High Voltage Transmission Line Using...
Protection of Extra High Voltage Transmission Line Using Distance Protection
Introduction: Distance protection is the most widely used to protect transmission lines. The
fundamental principle of distance relaying is based on the local measurement of voltages and currents,
where the relay responds to the impedance between the relay terminal and the fault location [1]. There
are many types of distance relay characteristic such as mho, reactance, admittance, quadrilateral
polarized mho, offset mho etc. Every type of characteristics has different intended function and
theories behind [2].
In order to understanding the function of relays, software relay models must be realized and feasible
alternative to studying the performance of protective relays. Relay models have been long used in a
variety of tasks, such as designing new relaying algorithms, optimizing relay settings. Electric power
utilities use compute based relay models to confirm how the relay would perform during systems
disturbances and normal operating conditions and to make the necessary corrective adjustment on the
relay settings. [3][4]. One of the world wide recognized, powerful analysis software package, is a
MATLAB/SIMULINK, which has the capability for modeling, simulating and analyzing dynamic
systems using SimPowerSystems toolbox, in side Simulink package, different parts of a system such
as three phase transformer, three phase load, distributed parameters line, circuit breaker, etc can

The Legitimacy And Global Governance
The legitimacy and importance of institutions in global governance is a highly contested topic, among
which many question the existence of international institutions. To suggest that institutions in global
governance do not matter, is to suggest that the majority of countries have the willingness to co
operate, the ability to solve disputes and to organise themselves to ensure problems are dealt with
effectively without the pressure of an outside body which has been proven to be ineffective . This
essay will examine how institutions matter and are important in global governance, through examining
a realist views, using Waltz concepts of insecurity and global governance. It will examine how global
institutions can promote peace and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These are important because in the international realm, there is always insecurity and a lack of trust
between states; they can never be certain that there are no threats from other states and therefore there
is always the risk that a war may commence. This is particularly a problem as pluralism exists among
states, therefore there are different views and aims, which inevitably cause disagreements. There is
essentially an anarchic condition, where there is no global government to enforce punishment or
control disputes and in turn there is a constant security dilemma . Institutions, such as the UN, create a
forum where different states issues can be discussed and the institution can act as a mediator to create
an appropriate response and plan, in order to deal with the issues. A prime example of how where
institutions this and may have been beneficial is World War One and World War Two, of which the
United Nations arose. This shows that states were aware of the dangers and risks of war that an
anarchic system had, and wanted an international institution to help prevent problems such as these
occurring again . Not to suggest that global institutions create world peace, but they can put pressure
on certain states, help solve arguments and controls disputes, to decrease the chances of escalation of
war. Had

Slavery Frederick Douglass Analysis
The Wonderful Life
In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Frederick Douglass mentions that
slaves do not have the privilege to have an education. In Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle explains that
without happiness, doing something good will not really matter because you will not be happy. In
Slavery, Jean Jacques Rousseau mentions that war is not the key to end slavery because war is only for
states not against man to man. In Thinking in Education, John Dewey says that thinking is another
method in learning because it will help students reflect on things. Life can be wonderful if people
learn to find ways to keep that happiness in them.

Dewey says that people have dwelt especially on the negative side because we let our minds think that
there is a specific way of thinking (6). As people keep growing, their knowledge keeps developing.
While people keep learning, they have to learn to accept somethings. One of those things is by simply
being able to accept that if a paper is wrong is wrong but at least they tried. Looking at a paper or
project that is wrong sometimes frightens people but it should not be that way because those who have
bad papers become the best ones. Even though, people are wrong that should not stop with their
education because of that. Meanwhile, Douglass was doing his chores, he was able to take bread from
home and share with the little white boys who, in return, would give [him] more valuable bread of
knowledge which was able to help him with his reading and writing (2). Being wrong does not mean
that this is the end, instead is a way to motivate yourself to do the best as you can to achieve
something better. People should not be letdown when they do something wrong because no one is
perfect. People just find ways to learn even if I some cases they do thigs wrong. The whole point of
this is to be able to learn and be wrong. People should not be disappointed if they do a paper and they
do not pass. They will just keep in mind their mistakes for

Robert Smithson Plural Jetty Essay
Robert Smithson s Spiral Jetty is a 3ft. 6 in. x 15 ft. x 1,500 ft. Earthwork located in Great Salt Lake,
Utah. It was created in April 1970. Located where the rails of the first transcontinental railroad met, it
sits near the Golden Spike monument; making it an actual landscape. It s a giant counterclockwise
spiral sculpture made of black rock, earth, algae, and salt crystals. It is said that Smithson used dump
trucks and bulldozers to haul in 6,650 tons of earth and rocks to complete the Spiral Jetty. In a 32
minute short color film, he recorded the construction of the Spiral Jetty. Smithson had to acquire land
rights, before completing it. Virginia Dwan Gallery of New York gave Smithson a $9,000 grant for a
part of the Spiral Jetty s construction. The rest was financed over a 20 years lease at payments of $100
annually. The first phase of building the Spiral Jetty took about 6 days to complete. Smithson was not
completely satisfied with it initially and spent another 3 days changing the shape. 7,000 tons of rock
had to be moved during these 3 additional days of work. Smithson died 3 years after completing the
Spiral Jetty. It is now owned by the state of Utah, who acquired it in 2011. ... Show more content on

Groupthink In Beast Of No Nation
Before becoming a child soldier, children go through a process that seems to desensitize and break
down their moral fiber. When faced with the situation of being a child soldier many are not given a
better option then to choose to conform to the aforementioned lifestyle or die. This situation presented
itself to Agu, the protagonist of the film Beast of No Nation. After losing his father and brother
through murder by the government soldiers, he was left with being an orphan alone in the jungle to
fend for himself. Thus causing Agu to be captured by a rebel group and recruited as a child soldier.
However, how does a normal child turn into a killer? Many tactics such as the use of promising
shelter, safety, and food can be used to influence a child like Agu to look ... Show more content on

The hazing philosophy is a tool used to gauge commitment and strength. Initiates are tasked with
subhuman task that are somewhat physically and psychologically harmful. This cultivates a brand of
loyalty and brotherhood that breeds groupthink. Groupthink is the phenomena where people seek the
desire to conform in a group which results in irrational or dysfunctional decision making. A hazing
ritual that was used as a training tactic for Agu was the Gauntlet , this is when potential child soldiers
had to run through a lineup of men while being beat trying to make it to the other side. The point is
that if you made it through you were strong enough to be a member of the rebel group and were
physically strong as well. Another example, however, which tested them psychologically, was the test
where they had to stand in a straight line and get shot at. What the children did not know was that the
gun would not actual release bullets. They were deceived and told that they were above normal
humans and would be protected from the enemies bullets because they were

Girls Should Dress Codes To Be Paid In High School
Do me a favor, name one person in school that doesn t want to change at least one school rule. No one
comes to mind, right? That s because high school rules, for the most part, are unreasonable or unfair.
One school rule the principal should change is the dress code policy because it s unfair and implies
that girls should dress a certain way because of men, which is untrue. No leggings, no holes, no tank
tops, no shorts, no hats, no nothing. That alone eliminates ⅔ of my wardrobe. These rules mostly
apply to girls and frankly I find that unfair as do many other students. Why should girls and/or boys
have to cover up and not be able to wear things that they would be perfectly fine wearing outside of
school just so that others don t get

Quinceañera Traditions
Every culture has some form of a celebration to recognize the coming of age of a child when they are
seen as a young adult to society. In Latin American countries, they call this celebration a Quinceañera
and it takes place when a young girl turns fifteen. In the United States, they celebrate a Sweet 16, once
the young girl turns sixteen. Both the Quinceañera and the Sweet 16 have some similarities, but they
have different traditions. In Sweet 16 parties, traditions vary because of the many celebrations for girls
with different ethnic backgrounds. Traditional themes that are found in Quinceañeras include a church
service, the shoe ceremony, and the last doll which symbolizes her childhood being left behind.

There is no religious component to a Sweet 16. In some states, the Sweet 16 marks the day when the
young girl can drive. However, this is not always the case in every state. Nonetheless, the Quinceañera
party does not focus on the driving aspect. At a Sweet 16, the guest of honor might be given the keys
to her first car. On the contrary, at a Quinceañera, the quince is usually given her first pair of high
heels. Traditionally, most people choose to have a Quinceañera party. However, it is becoming more
common for the young girl to skip the extravagant Sweet 16 party because she would rather get a car
or go on an expensive vacation. I can understand why someone wouldn t want a big celebration,
because both types of parties can be very costly. A Sweet 16 birthday party for a teenager can cost
from $300 $25,000 depending on how big the party is. The cost of a Quinceañera can cost the
equivalent to a wedding. However, it is very stressful for Latin American families to pay for their
child s party so it is necessary to start saving from the moment their child is born. Many parents look
to close family members to help contribute to the cost of the party. For example, in Cuba the budget of
the party is very low, varying from $300 to $400. Due to Fidel Castro s reign, parents salaries can be
as low as $20 a month making it very difficult to afford an expensive

An Unequal Distribution Of Wealth And Power Across The Nation
Living in America, I have always been aware of fact that there is an unequal distribution of wealth and
power across the nation. However, I was unaware that there is such a significant gap between the rich
and the poor. It was made clear in the video Wealth Inequality in America , that the top 1% has more
power and wealth than the middle and poor classes. The rich can get away with not paying their taxes
and sitting on their pile of free money. In the meantime, the poorest people are down to the loose
change in their pockets and are still paying their taxes. Corporations today have more privileges in
America, including a voice in the democracy. People like us are being excluded from important
decision making regarding our economic lives. Our understanding of what s going on with the wealth
distribution and the actuality of what s going on is two completely different things. So you may ask,
what s the reason behind this inequality? The answer is corporations and big businesses. Corporations
such as Bank of America, Nike, Google, Apple, and Microsoft are rising to power. Corporations have
also completely diminished the original intent of our Founding Fathers. According to Collin and
Yeskel s Economic Apartheid in America , it s sad to say that many Americans are unaware of these
things and it s starting to affect us as a country day by day. But while the truth of the economy may be
difficult to understand, Collins, Yeskel, and Perkins clarified and changed my views on the

Ancient Olympic Gamges to Modern Day Olympic Games Essay
Spectators from all over the world have gathered together on one stage, leaving no seat empty in the
grand arena. Cheers could be heard from all over the stadium as athletes from different towns and
cities come out. These people, trained and ready, have come from throughout the land, gathered
together in one spot to compete against one another. This was no simple competition. Not only is it for
the people, but it is also for the gods, to see who will be declared victor amongst those who call
themselves the finest over the rest. The moment the runner wielding the torch enters the stadium,
everyone waits and watches in earnest anticipation. The cauldron is lit by the Olympic flame and the

Another reason as to why the ancient games are regarded highly is because Persian king Xerxes, on
hearing that Olympia awarded only wreath prizes, marveled that Greeks competed not for material
reward, but only for honor (Kyle 34). The games were often associated with physical effort, fair
competition..., and sacred truce (Callebat 556). The ancient games were meant to create a sense of
peace for festivities dedicated to their gods. To do something underhanded was not justifiable. Ancient
Greece was not a unified state at the time of its birth up until the Macedonia king, Philip the II,
conquered it. It was originally split up into many city states, such as Sparta and Athens, which would
fight amongst each other. At one point, the ancient games existed but it eventually went away due to
all the conflict. However, according to Pausanias, a Greek traveler and geographer, the ancient games
were brought back because Greece was grievously worn [down from the] internal strife and plague (
DESCRIPTION OF GREECE ). This is further supported by another Greek lyric poet, Pindar, who
wrote under the power of noble joys, malignant pain is subdued and dies, whenever god sent Fate lifts
prosperity on high ( Pindar ). Noble joys could be interpreted as the festivities and the games while the
malignant pain could

Trends Principles Of The Counseling Profession
MHS 6006: Trends Principles of the Counseling Profession
Self reflection
To be honest, before my first counseling session I thought that counseling would be easier that what it
was; nonetheless, I learned very quickly otherwise. I believed that because I am an educator and
encounter similar situations that may require particular skills such as encouraging, empathy,
questioning and observation that I was going to have an advantage over acquiring and applying the
rest of the skills needed for a complete counseling session. Hence, I went into the first session with an
authoritative and even judgmental attitude towards my client; which I now regret. At the moment I
intertwined my teacher and counselor personas and I should not have done this. If I had been the
astute and objective counselor, I would have had appreciated every second of the first session to build
rapport and trust. Instead, I lectured the student about the school rules and how to avoid getting in
trouble. Therefore, I ended up spending some of session two reconstructing what should have been
done to properly serve the client and focus on the main concern without imposing my wishes or
prejudicial thoughts into the matter. Simple interviewing based on open and closed questioning with a
bit of self disclosure allowed me the opportunity to understand my client from their perspective, where
and why her problem stemmed from, and to formulate a few possible solutions that I wished for her to

The novel Of Mice and Men , written by John Steinbeck, is a tale of an extraordinary friendship

different reasons. Specific areas of which the novel will explore are parts such as the death of Curlys

. This show Curly trying to show everyone that he is not weak, and that he is still in charge. He also
uses the word yella to insult Lennie with. The fight between Lennie and Curly is a major point in the
novel. This mid point to the story displays the most violence, aggression and emotive language in a
single scene, and also sees the two most physical characters go head to head. On one side there is
Curly a psychotic mad man who craves violence and respect. On the other side there is Lennie a
simple, child minded man who would not whish to hurt anyone until he is forced to. When Curly starts
to attack Lennie, Lennie does not retaliate until George instructs him to. This is because Lennie s use
of violence is unintentional. He does not use violence to hurt them on purpose, but will when he is
forced to. In this case Lennie grabs Curly s hand. When this happens he panics. This causes him to
hang on, and he will not let go until he calms down. This can also be seen in the incident at weed,
when Lennie grabs a women s dress. In this incident, the woman yells. This causes Lennie to panic,
and therefore he grabs tighter. This also

The Oceanic Corporation (Determining the Cost of Capital) Larry Stone wants to estimate the firm s
hurdle rate because it is a benchmark for how well the company needs to do on a project in order to at
least break even. The higher the hurdle rate, the riskier the project will have to be and the lower the
hurdle rate is, the safer the project will be for a company. A company should strive for a financing mix
that minimizes the hurdle rate and matches the assets being financed. If there are not enough
investments that earn the hurdle rate or better, then the cash should be given as dividends to the

to Ringo, but it illustrates how the perceived meaning of a word and the ideas it means transmit
forecast the expected reaction. The association carried by a name may either amplify or inhibit a
character s emotional state. Jules call s the young man Ringo in the restaurant superficially because of
his English accent. Strategically, Jules identifies the young man with a broadly admired celebrity to
establish fraternity and to calm him. By calling the young man Ringo, Jules superi mposes the
admiration that Ringo Starr receives upon the young man. Obviously, Jules did not go through this
elaborate thought process when he chose to use that name. If you were to imagine Jules instead using
any other British name (e.g. George III, Ch aucer, or John Major) primarily because of the young man
s accent, you would see a significantly different reaction. Soon afterward, Jules learns Yolanda s, the
young woman s, name in order to pierce through her confused state and reason with her. He at tempts
to calm her with a similar strategy.
Jules: Nobody s gonna hurt anybody. We re gonna be like three Fonzies. And what s Fonzie like? (No

painful and traumatic. The removal of or damage to healthy, normal genital tissue interferes with the
natural functioning of the body and causes several immediate long term health consequences. For
example, babies born to women who have undergone female genital mutilation suffer a higher rate of
neonatal death compared with babies born to women who have not undergone the procedure.
Statement of the problem This study aims to: a. Define what Female Genital Mutilation is. b. Explain
why Female Genital Mutilation is controversial. c. Explain why Female Genital Mutilation is

Wilson is preparing his bank reconciliation at 31 May 2005. His bank statement shows a balance of
$228 cash at the bank. The balance on the bank account in his general ledger is $113 (credit). He has
noted the following reasons for the difference: (i) Cheque number 958602 was incorrectly recorded in

Post World War II Size
On Monday, 24 February 2014, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel announced massive cuts to the size
of the armed services, slashing the army to its pre World War II size. (breithbart.com) Hagel s plan
called for a 25% reduction in manpower by 2019. Historically, these cuts equate to a perceived failure
of will power of the American government by its global enemies. Such cuts are sure to decrease the
readiness posture of fighting units across the military. First order effects from cuts to funding equate to
poorly maintained equipment, reduced personnel readiness, as well as fewer opportunities for
professional military educational type schools. Second order effects include gaps in the NCO and
officer corps due to lack of funds to send ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(breithbart.com) This unwillingness to fund defense led both Hitler and the Japanese to believe they
could make war on the United States with any repercussion.
After World War II, President Truman cited the end of the war to justify his defense cuts; however, the
Korean War began, arguably, because of the large scale military cuts, which encouraged the Soviets
and Chinese Communists toward aggression on the Korean peninsula. As a result, government
officials increased the defense budget from $9.1 billion to just under $53.
Immediately following the Vietnam conflict, congress once again began defunding the military. The
end state of these specific cuts resulted in the United States pulling out of Saigon as communism
dominated the country. Additionally, the Soviets later invaded Afghanistan compelled to do so
possibly because of a perceived American distaste for foreign war. The election of Ronald Reagan was
instrumental in the recovery of this mistake as he implemented large increases in military
expenditures.
Task Force Smith Remembered
The Battle of Osan, also known as Task Force Smith, was the first American engagement of the
Korean War. On 25 June 1950, the North Korean People s Army dispatched an Army of 89,000
Soldiers into South Korea, devastating their entire force. (weaponsandwarfare.com) The North

Roosevelt s Reforms During The Great Depression
Once President Franklin Roosevelt was elected during the Great Depression, his first 100 days enacted
what he called the New Deal. This deal was a series of reforms that were meant to increase available
jobs, better the working conditions, and put money back into the economy. Jobs offered during this
time, as well as the relief, recovery, and reform efforts gave a kick start to the American economy,
helping to pull us out of the Great Depression. Some examples of these efforts can be seen in the
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the National Recovery Administration (NRA), and the Social
Security Act (SSA). The relief effort that I chose, the Civilian Conservation Corps, was an effort to
both conserve our natural resources as well as put young men between the ages of 18 and 25 back in
work. The act employed 2.5 million primarily white men into ... Show more content on

The effort addressed the work hours, productivity, union memberships, minimum wage, and prices of
services available. This program inevitably failed when the rules that were created were too long and
specific to be enforced regularly and efficiently. Despite this, they still managed to have a few positive
effects on society, such as helping end child labor in the textile business. Lastly, the Social Security
Act was one of many reform efforts that sprung from the New Deal. This act was an attempt to
provide general welfare for women and their children, those with disabilities such as blindness, older
individuals, and public health, and helped financially support them while they were looking for work
elsewhere. It was most common with elderly individuals, as they received what is known as old age
pensions. This was one of the few reforms that has stayed with us since the New Deal, and was
economically successful in bringing America out of the Great

How Does Wilkie Collins Present The Theme Of...
William Wilkie Collins was a famous and powerful novelist in the 19th century. Collins The
Moonstone is said to be the adoptive parent of the great English detective genre. TS Eliot, claiming
that the genre was invented by Collins and not by Poe , declared it to be the first, the longest and the
best of modern English detective novel (Ronald 179). Collins childhood and adulthood influenced the
novel, The Moonstone. Collins was born to the notable landscape artist, William Collins. At a youthful
age, Collins was sent away to the English Cole s Boarding School. Collins was an odd looking child,
he was born with a prominent bulge on his disproportionately large head and to make matters worse,
Collins was only five feet and six inches tall. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Collins states in The Moonstone that, the Brahmins never had a chance in the world of getting back
the moonstone, however, they stood up to the English (Collins 11 16). The Brahmins task in life was
to protect the moonstone, which belonged to the four handed Indian goddesses, Chandra (Collins 11
12). The goddess commanded that the Moonstone... be watched ... by three priests in night and day, to
the end of the generations of men (Collins 12). The Brahmins carried out Chandra s task diligently,
until the Moonstone was taken by the sultans and then Herncastle (Collins 12 15). The three Brahmins
awaited their chance to get the moonstone for many generations, and even crossed the sea to seize
their stone from the English(Wells 306). However, Godfrey Ablewhite was not as courageous and
noble minded as the Brahmins. Ablewhite, a reputable Englishman and the fiancé of Rachel Verinder,
is the actual thief of the moonstone. Ablewhite wants to marry Rachel only because of her money or
steal the moonstone to pay off his debt . When Rachel refuses him, the moonstone is taken by
Ablewhite and the curse of the Moonstone is put on him (Wells 310). The complete polar
characterization between the Brahmins and Ablewhite helps to illustrate Collins anti imperialism. The

Essay on Family Relationships in Greek Mythology
Greek Mythology originated around 775 B.C.E. It all started with Homer s Iliad and continued on with
Hesiod s Theogany. These were the first two myths to be recorded in Greek Mythology. Both of these
myths reveal to us about their understanding of the universe, and about their culture. Not only do they
talk about their various gods, and heroes, but they also talk about how they viewed the universe in
general (Rosenberg 79). Greek Mythology evolved from two early civilizations, the Mycenaean s and
the Minoans. It was the combining of these different Greek cities and Kingdoms during 10th century
B.C. that created Greek Mythology. Its Geographic isolation gave it a place for mythologies to evolve

However, Uranus was afraid that Cronus might overpower him and one day obtain all his power.
Knowing this Uranus purposely tried to kill Cronus in multiply occasions, but Gaea would always
protect him. One day Gaea and Cronus made a plan to have Cronus challenge Uranus and take over
his power. So it happened, Cronnus challenged his father and was victorious during their battle and
Uranus was left to rot (Bernard 1) Now Cronus had become king of gods by killing his father Uranus
(Bernard 3). In both Greek and Roman Mythology, the relationship between parents and children are
distorted, strained, and bizarrely transformed, because of their greediness for power and obsessiveness
to be better than the other.
To begin with, the relationship between parents and their children are distorted, because of their
greediness and obsessiveness to be better than the other. In the story of Medea, Medea poisoned her
own children, because she wanted to see her husband suffer the way she suffered after he left her. She
decided they best way to get revenge is by poisoning her children, this way both their children and
Jason s new wife will die of poisoning and Jason will be left all alone in the world with no one to love
him (Rosenberg 204). This clearly shows that the relationship between parents and children is
distorted, because Medea was willing to poison her own children to get revenge on her husband.
Someone who is even willing to do that is twisted and evil in

My Experience At Summer Camp
You and your sister are soooooo different, my friend, who I had met at summer camp a couple years
before, informed me as we stood beneath the blistering sun, our necks slicked with sweat and our
throats parched. Approximately two second before Julia spoke those words, my sister had attempted to
do a cartwheel in front of the whole camp, failed miserably, and screamed out in amusement. The
episode was followed first by a simultaneous gasp from the mouths of 200 campers, in fear of her
injury, and then a fit of booming laughter when she stuck up her thumb and smiled. While everyone
stood around watching her, I pouted on the sidelines of the common field and shook my head in
shame. Of course I wanted to be in on the fun, laughing and jumping and doing gymnastics with the
rest of West Mountain Camp s population. But instead, I felt forced into a reputation created for me so
many years ago as the quiet, calm and mature twin sister of the rambunctious and outgoing Chloe
Blumberg. Always sitting on the sidelines, reading my books, doling out my wise words and keeping
my sister in check. The funny thing is, I can t remember it ever being different. I was always told by
my mom, dad and grandparents that I was the quiet and mature one of the duo, and that I didn t need
to get attention in the way Chloe always did because my intelligence was enough to give me the
recognition I needed. Chloe was just always so loud and clumsy that by default I was destined to be

Good For Great, By Jim Collins
Good to Great, by Jim Collins, is based on seven principles that propel organizations into the next
level of service: Level 5 Executive Leadership; First Who, Then What; Confront the Brutal Facts; The
Hedgehog Concept; A Culture of Discipline; Technology Accelerators; The Flywheel and the Doom
Loop (Collins, 2001). By recognizing these opportunities for growth, organizations can turn from
good to great with the proper leadership. Leadership is built on a hierarchy of stages, and a leader
gradually grows through the levels or may even land anywhere among the levels. Level 1 is a leader
who is able to make decisions for the organization based on their skill levels and background
knowledge. Leaders performing at Level 2 effectively work with others in a small setting by
contributing their own capabilities. At Level 3, the leader is a competent manager who utilizes
resources and personnel toward predetermined objectives. The Effective Leader at Level 4 works
towards the vision by setting high standards for the organization. Level 5 Leadership, which
transforms an organization from good to great, refers to leaders who not only accept humility, but also
professional will. The great leader strives to make the organizational successful, not just themselves.
He or she does whatever needs to be done to make the company great (2001, p. 30). This level of
leadership is exhibited in the Gillette case. The CEO, Coleman Mockler, and his leadership team
strived to make the

Cord Blood Research Papers
Trash to Treasure
The Pinterest world has changed the way we view trash. Things once tossed in the garbage now hang
on walls and adorn porches. Old milk cans, wooden pallets and chipped mason jars now have a
hundred new uses. These recycling trends that have been born this century don t end at making living
rooms more stylish, but extend to improving and saving lives. Technology is emerging to harvest once
discarded after birth and preserving it for research and treatment. Cord blood banking is not only more
ethical, but more efficient than its competitors and is therefore the future of stem cell research.
Shortly after an egg is fertilized stem cells begin to form. These cells are programmed to form every
organ and tissue in the body as the baby develops. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A limited amount of stem cells can be extracted from after birth, but these few cells can mean a longer
or improved life for someone (Bergman). In addition, people believe that harvesting cord blood cells
steals the cells from the child. The umbilical cord is cut and clamped just like a typical delivery
(CariCord). Delayed clamping, in which the cord is left attached to drain the blood back into the baby,
still allows the afterbirth to be donated. The science behind cord blood banking is still developing
because these treatments have only been performed for a little over ten years and the only way to
overcome that is to move forward with research (Stem Cell). Cord blood cells hold the potential of
becoming brain and heart cells and combatting serious neurological diseases. The science is young,
but one out of every three hundred kids are plagued with cerebral palsy and one of every sixty eight
children battle autism (What It Is). The chance of helping people throughout the world live a better life
fuels the need for an increase of support in this budding

Introduction
Utilitarianism, deontological, and virtue theory ethics are three normative approaches to ethics. This
paper will go over the similarities and differences between virtue theory, utilitarianism, and
deontological principles. It will include information of the variations in how each concept details
ethics, morality, and it will also discuss a personal experience to describe the correlation between
virtue, values, and moral perceptions as they relate to one of the three theories.
Similarities and Differences
Virtue theory emphasizes character traits rather than the rules or consequences while deontology is
described as an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Virtue ethics focuses on the benefits, or ethical personality, whereas deontology focuses on
responsibilities or guidelines. Utilitarianism focuses on the repercussions of activities. Virtue ethics is
also called agent based or personality ethics. When using the quality principles approach, one should
take the point of view that in living their lifestyle they should try growing quality in all that they do
(Boylan, Chapter 11, 2009). Utilitarianism is a way of consequentialism; significance that the ethical
worth of an activity is established by its results. Utilitarianism indicates that an activity is fairly right
when that activity generates more total application for the group than any other alternative (Boylan,
Chapter 12, 2009). Deontological principles mostly judge the activity, depending on the action s
sticking with a concept or guidelines. This principle uses guidelines and responsibilities to determine
what is right. Deontology preserves the wrongness of activities in the kind of activity that it is, rather
than the repercussions it triggers.
Personal Experience
The fundamental principle of the military is a typical representation of utilitarianism. From when one
takes the oath of enlistment to the final day of active duty, the Navy instills the importance of virtues,
values, and the correct moral actions. The virtue of the Navy is characteristic to an all volunteer

Research Paper On Piano Recital
The Piano Recital You were born to be real, not to be perfect. Anonymous. I was in 6th grade, my first
year in middle school. Because my piano teacher was the music teacher at the elementary school I had
to have a new piano teacher since I didn t go to that school anymore. When I was with my old teacher,
she said that I didn t have to do any recitals. Well now I have a different teacher, so that will change.
My mom had just picked me up from my piano lesson. My teacher talked about a piano recital and
about the song I would play. I had said I didn t want to do more than one song and she said that was

minutes before we had to leave. By the time we left I had started to get really worried. It was a ???
minute drive to the building that the recital would be at. (My piano teacher s church) When we got out
I saw other people arriving. Some I knew and some I didn t. We walked in and down some stairs into
the worship area. There were already quite a few sitting down, so we took a seat in the middle closer
to the back. I was really nervous by then. My hands were sweating and I felt hot. We looked at a piece
of paper to see that I was playing my song ???. ( ex. 5th) There was ???? people playing in all. I sat
with my mom, dad, and brother waiting for it to begin. Finally it did. My piano teacher went up to the
stage and thanked everyone for being there. She then called out the student playing and their song.
The student walked up and played their song. The teacher continued to introduce the students until it
was my turn. I unsteadily walked up to the piano while the teacher placed my song up on the piano. I
stared at the paper and began to play the song. I was so nervous that I couldn t even read the notes. My
hands played the notes without me even thinking about what they were doing. Near the end of the

Examples Of Metaphors In Their Eyes Were Watching God
Love Zora Hurston s Their Eyes Were Watching God follows main character Janie Crawford s journey
into womanhood and her ultimate search for self discovery. Having to sudden transition from
childhood to adulthood at the age of sixteen, the story shows Janie s constant struggle to discover her
own voice and fulfill her dreams through three marriages and a lifetime of suffering that come about
from being a black woman in America in the early 20th century. Throughout the novel, Hurston gives
strong metaphors helping to unify the novel s themes and narrative; thus providing a greater
understanding of Janie s quest for selfhood. There are a couple significant metaphors in the novel that
achieve this unity: the pear tree metaphor, the figure of the mule, metaphors representing nature
personified and finally the use of visual imagery. Metaphors are used throughout Their Eyes Were
Watching God . One of the most powerful metaphors in the novel is the blossoming pear tree.
She was stretched on her back beneath the pear tree soaking in the alto chant of the visiting bees, the
gold of the sun and panting breath of the breeze when the inaudible voice of it all came to her. She
saw a dust bearing bee sink into the sanctum of a bloom; the thousand sister calyxes arch to meet the
love embrace and the ecstatic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hurston uses a hurricane and a lake during the climax of the novel. Both the hurricane and the lake
represent the capriciousness of nature and the impersonal manner with which nature inflicts its wrath
on man. Hurston also uses these images to illustrate the inability of man to control nature. The
hurricane is a monster: It cannot be avoided. The lake is similar in its inevitable nature: Hurston
portrays it as unbeatable, impersonal and animal like as it leaves its banks and overtakes people hiding
in their homes or trying to flee the storm. Tea Cake believes he can beat it, but is ultimately defeated

  • 2. A Brief Note On Racial And Ethnic Inequality Elizabeth Rubio Professor Alvarez Sociology 180 March 16, 2016 Racial and Ethnic Inequality What is racial and ethnic inequality? To understand racial and ethnic inequality you must understand what is considered race and what is considered ethnicity. According to our textbook, Race can be defined as a group or population that shares a set of genetic characteristics and physical features meanwhile ethnic groups are set off to some degree from other groups by displaying a unique set of cultural traits, such as their language, religion, or diet (Leon Guerrero). When others are treated unjustly, whether it is in the workplace, school, community, public facilities, etc., due to their race or ethnic group then that is racial and ethnic inequality. One big factor or cause of this inequality is racism. Racism is the belief in the inferiority of certain racial or ethnic groups, often accompanied by discrimination (Leon Guerrero). People believe that the color of a person s skin or certain features of that person make them better than those who have a different color of skin or set of physical features. They believe that their language and religion is the correct and best meanwhile the rest are seen as inferior. Those same people think that because of their skin tone or language, they should have more privileges and rights than those who are different from them. Most of the time, those people are not part of the minority group and think they are better than those in minority ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Internet Addiction By Greg Beato Internet addiction has become a huge problem in today s society. In Greg Beato s article, he discusses the growing phenomena of internet addiction disorder. The writer explains that more and more people are becoming addicted to the internet. For example, he tells of a teenager in Ohio, who shot and killed his mom and injured his dad because they took away his Xbox. He tells how it is stated that five to ten percent of the 52 million internet users were addicted. The author is telling us that the internet has become very addictive in our everyday society. My reaction to what I just read is that I agree with the writer. Beato writes about the growing phenomena of internet addiction disorder. I think that because technology has made people live so much easier, that it has made people unable to properly act right in real life situations without it. I realize that the writer is trying to inform others about what is going on around them. I believe that the internet has become very addictive in everyday society. I feel that I can identify with what the author is saying. I feel like I can identify because I can t go anytime without getting on my laptop. I basically stay on my ... • 4. Protection Of Extra High Voltage Transmission Line Using... Protection of Extra High Voltage Transmission Line Using Distance Protection Introduction: Distance protection is the most widely used to protect transmission lines. The fundamental principle of distance relaying is based on the local measurement of voltages and currents, where the relay responds to the impedance between the relay terminal and the fault location [1]. There are many types of distance relay characteristic such as mho, reactance, admittance, quadrilateral polarized mho, offset mho etc. Every type of characteristics has different intended function and theories behind [2]. In order to understanding the function of relays, software relay models must be realized and feasible alternative to studying the performance of protective relays. Relay models have been long used in a variety of tasks, such as designing new relaying algorithms, optimizing relay settings. Electric power utilities use compute based relay models to confirm how the relay would perform during systems disturbances and normal operating conditions and to make the necessary corrective adjustment on the relay settings. [3][4]. One of the world wide recognized, powerful analysis software package, is a MATLAB/SIMULINK, which has the capability for modeling, simulating and analyzing dynamic systems using SimPowerSystems toolbox, in side Simulink package, different parts of a system such as three phase transformer, three phase load, distributed parameters line, circuit breaker, etc can ... • 5. The Legitimacy And Global Governance The legitimacy and importance of institutions in global governance is a highly contested topic, among which many question the existence of international institutions. To suggest that institutions in global governance do not matter, is to suggest that the majority of countries have the willingness to co operate, the ability to solve disputes and to organise themselves to ensure problems are dealt with effectively without the pressure of an outside body which has been proven to be ineffective . This essay will examine how institutions matter and are important in global governance, through examining a realist views, using Waltz concepts of insecurity and global governance. It will examine how global institutions can promote peace and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These are important because in the international realm, there is always insecurity and a lack of trust between states; they can never be certain that there are no threats from other states and therefore there is always the risk that a war may commence. This is particularly a problem as pluralism exists among states, therefore there are different views and aims, which inevitably cause disagreements. There is essentially an anarchic condition, where there is no global government to enforce punishment or control disputes and in turn there is a constant security dilemma . Institutions, such as the UN, create a forum where different states issues can be discussed and the institution can act as a mediator to create an appropriate response and plan, in order to deal with the issues. A prime example of how where institutions this and may have been beneficial is World War One and World War Two, of which the United Nations arose. This shows that states were aware of the dangers and risks of war that an anarchic system had, and wanted an international institution to help prevent problems such as these occurring again . Not to suggest that global institutions create world peace, but they can put pressure on certain states, help solve arguments and controls disputes, to decrease the chances of escalation of war. Slavery Frederick Douglass Analysis The Wonderful Life In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Frederick Douglass mentions that slaves do not have the privilege to have an education. In Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle explains that without happiness, doing something good will not really matter because you will not be happy. In Slavery, Jean Jacques Rousseau mentions that war is not the key to end slavery because war is only for states not against man to man. In Thinking in Education, John Dewey says that thinking is another method in learning because it will help students reflect on things. Life can be wonderful if people learn to find ways to keep that happiness in them. Rousseau says that if a person wants to gain more authority over the other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dewey says that people have dwelt especially on the negative side because we let our minds think that there is a specific way of thinking (6). As people keep growing, their knowledge keeps developing. While people keep learning, they have to learn to accept somethings. One of those things is by simply being able to accept that if a paper is wrong is wrong but at least they tried. Looking at a paper or project that is wrong sometimes frightens people but it should not be that way because those who have bad papers become the best ones. Even though, people are wrong that should not stop with their education because of that. Meanwhile, Douglass was doing his chores, he was able to take bread from home and share with the little white boys who, in return, would give [him] more valuable bread of knowledge which was able to help him with his reading and writing (2). Being wrong does not mean that this is the end, instead is a way to motivate yourself to do the best as you can to achieve something better. People should not be letdown when they do something wrong because no one is perfect. People just find ways to learn even if I some cases they do thigs wrong. The whole point of this is to be able to learn and be wrong. People should not be disappointed if they do a paper and they do not pass. They will just keep in mind their mistakes for ... Located where the rails of the first transcontinental railroad met, it sits near the Golden Spike monument; making it an actual landscape. It s a giant counterclockwise spiral sculpture made of black rock, earth, algae, and salt crystals. It is said that Smithson used dump trucks and bulldozers to haul in 6,650 tons of earth and rocks to complete the Spiral Jetty. In a 32 minute short color film, he recorded the construction of the Spiral Jetty. Smithson had to acquire land rights, before completing it. Virginia Dwan Gallery of New York gave Smithson a $9,000 grant for a part of the Spiral Jetty s construction. The rest was financed over a 20 years lease at payments of $100 annually. The first phase of building the Spiral Jetty took about 6 days to complete. Smithson was not completely satisfied with it initially and spent another 3 days changing the shape. 7,000 tons of rock had to be moved during these 3 additional days of work. When faced with the situation of being a child soldier many are not given a better option then to choose to conform to the aforementioned lifestyle or die. This situation presented itself to Agu, the protagonist of the film Beast of No Nation. After losing his father and brother through murder by the government soldiers, he was left with being an orphan alone in the jungle to fend for himself. The hazing philosophy is a tool used to gauge commitment and strength. Initiates are tasked with subhuman task that are somewhat physically and psychologically harmful. This cultivates a brand of loyalty and brotherhood that breeds groupthink. Groupthink is the phenomena where people seek the desire to conform in a group which results in irrational or dysfunctional decision making. A hazing ritual that was used as a training tactic for Agu was the Gauntlet , this is when potential child soldiers had to run through a lineup of men while being beat trying to make it to the other side. The point is that if you made it through you were strong enough to be a member of the rebel group and were physically strong as well. Another example, however, which tested them psychologically, was the test where they had to stand in a straight line and get shot at. What the children did not know was that the gun would not actual release bullets. That s because high school rules, for the most part, are unreasonable or unfair. One school rule the principal should change is the dress code policy because it s unfair and implies that girls should dress a certain way because of men, which is untrue. No leggings, no holes, no tank tops, no shorts, no hats, no nothing. That alone eliminates ⅔ of my wardrobe. In the United States, they celebrate a Sweet 16, once the young girl turns sixteen. Both the Quinceañera and the Sweet 16 have some similarities, but they have different traditions. However, this is not always the case in every state. Nonetheless, the Quinceañera party does not focus on the driving aspect. At a Sweet 16, the guest of honor might be given the keys to her first car. On the contrary, at a Quinceañera, the quince is usually given her first pair of high heels. Traditionally, most people choose to have a Quinceañera party. However, it is becoming more common for the young girl to skip the extravagant Sweet 16 party because she would rather get a car or go on an expensive vacation. I can understand why someone wouldn t want a big celebration, because both types of parties can be very costly. A Sweet 16 birthday party for a teenager can cost from $300 $25,000 depending on how big the party is. The cost of a Quinceañera can cost the equivalent to a wedding. However, it is very stressful for Latin American families to pay for their child s party so it is necessary to start saving from the moment their child is born. Many parents look to close family members to help contribute to the cost of the party. For example, in Cuba the budget of the party is very low, varying from $300 to $400. It was made clear in the video Wealth Inequality in America , that the top 1% has more power and wealth than the middle and poor classes. The rich can get away with not paying their taxes and sitting on their pile of free money. In the meantime, the poorest people are down to the loose change in their pockets and are still paying their taxes. Corporations today have more privileges in America, including a voice in the democracy. People like us are being excluded from important decision making regarding our economic lives. Our understanding of what s going on with the wealth distribution and the actuality of what s going on is two completely different things. So you may ask, what s the reason behind this inequality? The answer is corporations and big businesses. Corporations such as Bank of America, Nike, Google, Apple, and Microsoft are rising to power. Corporations have also completely diminished the original intent of our Founding Fathers. According to Collin and Yeskel s Economic Apartheid in America , it s sad to say that many Americans are unaware of these things and it s starting to affect us as a country day by day. But while the truth of the economy may be difficult to understand, Collins, Yeskel, and Perkins clarified and changed my views on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Another reason as to why the ancient games are regarded highly is because Persian king Xerxes, on hearing that Olympia awarded only wreath prizes, marveled that Greeks competed not for material reward, but only for honor (Kyle 34). The games were often associated with physical effort, fair competition..., and sacred truce (Callebat 556). The ancient games were meant to create a sense of peace for festivities dedicated to their gods. To do something underhanded was not justifiable. Ancient Greece was not a unified state at the time of its birth up until the Macedonia king, Philip the II, conquered it. It was originally split up into many city states, such as Sparta and Athens, which would fight amongst each other. At one point, the ancient games existed but it eventually went away due to all the conflict. However, according to Pausanias, a Greek traveler and geographer, the ancient games were brought back because Greece was grievously worn [down from the] internal strife and plague ( DESCRIPTION OF GREECE ). This is further supported by another Greek lyric poet, Pindar, who wrote under the power of noble joys, malignant pain is subdued and dies, whenever god sent Fate lifts prosperity on high ( Pindar ). • 14. Trends Principles Of The Counseling Profession MHS 6006: Trends Principles of the Counseling Profession Self reflection To be honest, before my first counseling session I thought that counseling would be easier that what it was; nonetheless, I learned very quickly otherwise. I believed that because I am an educator and encounter similar situations that may require particular skills such as encouraging, empathy, questioning and observation that I was going to have an advantage over acquiring and applying the rest of the skills needed for a complete counseling session. Hence, I went into the first session with an authoritative and even judgmental attitude towards my client; which I now regret. At the moment I intertwined my teacher and counselor personas and I should not have done this. If I had been the astute and objective counselor, I would have had appreciated every second of the first session to build rapport and trust. Instead, I lectured the student about the school rules and how to avoid getting in trouble. Therefore, I ended up spending some of session two reconstructing what should have been done to properly serve the client and focus on the main concern without imposing my wishes or prejudicial thoughts into the matter. Simple interviewing based on open and closed questioning with a bit of self disclosure allowed me the opportunity to understand my client from their perspective, where and why her problem stemmed from, and to formulate a few possible solutions that I wished for her to arrive to with my ... But instead, I felt forced into a reputation created for me so many years ago as the quiet, calm and mature twin sister of the rambunctious and outgoing Chloe Blumberg. Always sitting on the sidelines, reading my books, doling out my wise words and keeping my sister in check. The funny thing is, I can t remember it ever being different. I was always told by my mom, dad and grandparents that I was the quiet and mature one of the duo, and that I didn t need to get attention in the way Chloe always did because my intelligence was enough to give me the recognition I needed. Chloe was just always so loud and clumsy that by default I was destined to be the other one, more in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Good For Great, By Jim Collins Good to Great, by Jim Collins, is based on seven principles that propel organizations into the next level of service: Level 5 Executive Leadership; First Who, Then What; Confront the Brutal Facts; The Hedgehog Concept; A Culture of Discipline; Technology Accelerators; The Flywheel and the Doom Loop (Collins, 2001). By recognizing these opportunities for growth, organizations can turn from good to great with the proper leadership. Leadership is built on a hierarchy of stages, and a leader gradually grows through the levels or may even land anywhere among the levels. Level 1 is a leader who is able to make decisions for the organization based on their skill levels and background knowledge. Leaders performing at Level 2 effectively work with others in a small setting by contributing their own capabilities. At Level 3, the leader is a competent manager who utilizes resources and personnel toward predetermined objectives. The Effective Leader at Level 4 works towards the vision by setting high standards for the organization. Level 5 Leadership, which transforms an organization from good to great, refers to leaders who not only accept humility, but also professional will. The great leader strives to make the organizational successful, not just themselves. He or she does whatever needs to be done to make the company great (2001, p. 30). This level of leadership is exhibited in the Gillette case. The CEO, Coleman Mockler, and his leadership team strived to make the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Cord Blood Research Papers Trash to Treasure The Pinterest world has changed the way we view trash. Things once tossed in the garbage now hang on walls and adorn porches. Old milk cans, wooden pallets and chipped mason jars now have a hundred new uses. These recycling trends that have been born this century don t end at making living rooms more stylish, but extend to improving and saving lives. Technology is emerging to harvest once discarded after birth and preserving it for research and treatment. Cord blood banking is not only more ethical, but more efficient than its competitors and is therefore the future of stem cell research. Shortly after an egg is fertilized stem cells begin to form. These cells are programmed to form every organ and tissue in the body as the baby develops. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A limited amount of stem cells can be extracted from after birth, but these few cells can mean a longer or improved life for someone (Bergman). In addition, people believe that harvesting cord blood cells steals the cells from the child. The umbilical cord is cut and clamped just like a typical delivery (CariCord). Delayed clamping, in which the cord is left attached to drain the blood back into the baby, still allows the afterbirth to be donated. The science behind cord blood banking is still developing because these treatments have only been performed for a little over ten years and the only way to overcome that is to move forward with research (Stem Cell). Cord blood cells hold the potential of becoming brain and heart cells and combatting serious neurological diseases. The science is young, but one out of every three hundred kids are plagued with cerebral palsy and one of every sixty eight children battle autism (What It Is). The chance of helping people throughout the world live a better life fuels the need for an increase of support in this budding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Virtue ethics focuses on the benefits, or ethical personality, whereas deontology focuses on responsibilities or guidelines. Utilitarianism focuses on the repercussions of activities. Virtue ethics is also called agent based or personality ethics. When using the quality principles approach, one should take the point of view that in living their lifestyle they should try growing quality in all that they do (Boylan, Chapter 11, 2009). Utilitarianism is a way of consequentialism; significance that the ethical worth of an activity is established by its results. Utilitarianism indicates that an activity is fairly right when that activity generates more total application for the group than any other alternative (Boylan, Chapter 12, 2009). Deontological principles mostly judge the activity, depending on the action s sticking with a concept or guidelines. This principle uses guidelines and responsibilities to determine what is right. Deontology preserves the wrongness of activities in the kind of activity that it is, rather than the repercussions it triggers. Personal Experience The fundamental principle of the military is a typical representation of utilitarianism. From when one takes the oath of enlistment to the final day of active duty, the Navy instills the importance of virtues, values, and the correct moral actions. The virtue of the Navy is characteristic to an all volunteer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Research Paper On Piano Recital The Piano Recital You were born to be real, not to be perfect. Anonymous. I was in 6th grade, my first year in middle school. Because my piano teacher was the music teacher at the elementary school I had to have a new piano teacher since I didn t go to that school anymore. When I was with my old teacher, she said that I didn t have to do any recitals. Well now I have a different teacher, so that will change. My mom had just picked me up from my piano lesson. My teacher talked about a piano recital and about the song I would play. I had said I didn t want to do more than one song and she said that was fine. My mom and I were discussing it in the car. The recital is going to be on ??????. Stated mom. My stomach dropped. That s pretty soon. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I went downstairs, had breakfast and played the song. My fingers kept hitting the wrong keys and getting out of rhythm. I realized that I was playing too much and that I was just stressed out and couldn t play it right. I took a deep breath and played it slowly. I played the song with only one tiny error and then stopped, afraid I would overdo it. The only other time I played the song was a few minutes before we had to leave. By the time we left I had started to get really worried. It was a ??? minute drive to the building that the recital would be at. (My piano teacher s church) When we got out I saw other people arriving. Some I knew and some I didn t. We walked in and down some stairs into the worship area. There were already quite a few sitting down, so we took a seat in the middle closer to the back. I was really nervous by then. My hands were sweating and I felt hot. We looked at a piece of paper to see that I was playing my song ???. ( ex. 5th) There was ???? people playing in all. I sat with my mom, dad, and brother waiting for it to begin. Finally it did. My piano teacher went up to the stage and thanked everyone for being there. She then called out the student playing and their song. The student walked up and played their song. The teacher continued to introduce the students until it was my turn. I unsteadily walked up to the piano while the teacher placed my song up on the piano. I stared at the paper and began to play the song. I was so nervous that I couldn t even read the notes. My hands played the notes without me even thinking about what they were doing. Near the end of the song I could ve moved my hands up a few notes to play at a higher octave, (a higher set of the same notes) but decided not to incase I messed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Examples Of Metaphors In Their Eyes Were Watching God Love Zora Hurston s Their Eyes Were Watching God follows main character Janie Crawford s journey into womanhood and her ultimate search for self discovery. Having to sudden transition from childhood to adulthood at the age of sixteen, the story shows Janie s constant struggle to discover her own voice and fulfill her dreams through three marriages and a lifetime of suffering that come about from being a black woman in America in the early 20th century. Throughout the novel, Hurston gives strong metaphors helping to unify the novel s themes and narrative; thus providing a greater understanding of Janie s quest for selfhood. There are a couple significant metaphors in the novel that achieve this unity: the pear tree metaphor, the figure of the mule, metaphors representing nature personified and finally the use of visual imagery. Metaphors are used throughout Their Eyes Were Watching God . One of the most powerful metaphors in the novel is the blossoming pear tree. She was stretched on her back beneath the pear tree soaking in the alto chant of the visiting bees, the gold of the sun and panting breath of the breeze when the inaudible voice of it all came to her. She saw a dust bearing bee sink into the sanctum of a bloom; the thousand sister calyxes arch to meet the love embrace and the ecstatic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hurston uses a hurricane and a lake during the climax of the novel. Both the hurricane and the lake represent the capriciousness of nature and the impersonal manner with which nature inflicts its wrath on man. Hurston also uses these images to illustrate the inability of man to control nature. The hurricane is a monster: It cannot be avoided. The lake is similar in its inevitable nature: Hurston portrays it as unbeatable, impersonal and animal like as it leaves its banks and overtakes people hiding in their homes or trying to flee the storm.
