Oz as Utopia
Taylor Wilton
Dr. Ethna Lay
The Wonderful Worlds of Utopia
Americans crave Oz because of it s utopian vision. On the surface, Oz appears to be a perfect utopia to
Dorothy. When she first arrives, Oz is bright, colorful and full of magic and wonder while her home in
Kansas is dull, lifeless and devoid of hope. In Kansas, it s as if the citizens are stuck with no real plans
or goals for the future. In Oz, traveling down the elaborate, intertwined yellow brick road offers
Dorothy a great chance for adventure and hope and magic. This also goes for Elphaba from the
Broadway show, Wicked. Bot of their desire is to go home. The end of the yellow brick road and the
Wizard offers a chance for both of their prayers to be answered. ... Show more content on

Cashdan claims that The Wizard of Oz tends to focus on shortcomings in the self as opposed excesses
(218). The themes in each fairy tale focus on different subjects. For instance, the theme in Snow White
is vanity, and how looks won t get you anywhere. In other traditional fairy tales like Cinderella, they
teach that intelligence, hard work and courage count for little unless one has acquaintances in high
places (Cashdan, 9). The Wizard of Oz focuses on more inner conflicts than other stories such as
Snow White and Cinderella. The story is about Dorothy s journey to make herself a happier person
and find a happier life. Helping her companions fulfil their destinies helps her fulfil her own (218).
Cashdan also explains how intelligence can outweigh physical attributes. This is comforting for both
children and adults alike because, overall, no one wants to be juded on outer appearance, even if they
are indeed good looking. Intelligence is more important in the long run. In Wicked, Glinda is obsessed
with her prettiness and seems to outweigh Elphaba s popularity, but Elphaba is the one who triumphs
in the end when the teacher gives her special privelages with a wand because she realizes how smart
and gifted she is, disregarding her looks completely. Also, in The Wizard of Oz, Scarecrow symbolizes
how uncomfortable it is to feel unintelligent. He knows his lot in life will be vastly improved if he can
make sense of the world. And

Regulating The Body As A Social Institution
Social Institutions, policies and practices regulate the body through normative gender and sexual
scripts. An institution is the process of a social organized behavior around a particular purpose. In
other words it is a group that has a common goal in mind. A social institution is a major way that
human beings organize their life. As stated in Chapter three Learning Gender (141 142) one way of
choosing people for different tasks for a job or society are basis of their talents, motivations, and there
competence. Another way a social institution plays a role in regulating the body through sexual scripts
in the realm of doctors. They as unit figure out what sexual performances and actions are considered
harmless and or unsafe in society. We

Health, Education, And Women
Raisa Feliz and Emmett Rafferty Interim Report #3 Health, Education and Women
Over the past few decades Brazil has made major improvements to its healthcare system. Before 1988,
half of Brazil s population did not have health care coverage (World Health Organization). This
changed when Brazil implemented Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde) which provided
universal free healthcare coverage for its citizens. Since its enactment, 75% of Brazil s population now
rely on Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) as their sole provider of health coverage, making it the largest
public health system in the world (World Health Organization). SUS receives its funding primarily
through federal and local taxation totaling $208 billion (Deliotte). However, this large amount of
spending is not reflected in the quality of healthcare provided to Brazilians. Brazil has an estimated
2.5 hospital beds per 1,000 citizens and the beds are of bad quality and are poorly distributed
(Deliotte). Brazil s Federal Medical Council conducted a survey that showed 93% of Brazilians
considered the healthcare systems to be either very bad or mediocre (Deliotte). While more Brazilians
have access to healthcare than ever before, the quality of care does not meet the requirements that
would allow the system to be truly effective. Despite its operational healthcare inefficiencies, Brazil s
life expectancy has been rapidly increasing since SUS s implementation, as shown in Figure 1.

How African Americans Are Portrayed On The Show Essay
I am a pretty big fan of reality TV because it entertains me. To see the lives of different celebrities, and
to see what they do and go through on a day to day basis, in my opinion, is worth tuning in to once a
week. Sometimes the stuff shown on reality TV be funny, but other times they can be rather
disappointing. TV station, VH1, is home to an abundance of reality television shows, however, very
few of those shows are more popular than the series Love and Hip Hop. Love and Hip Hop has been
going on for several seasons now, which obviously indicates there are many people that consistently
watch the show. The show may be very entertaining to watch, but the problem is how African
Americans are portrayed on the show.
VH1 over the years has taken advantage of people s flaws by televising them and profiting off the
entertainment these flaws provide. They have done it to people of various races, but no group is a
greater victim than blacks. I think it is safe to say that VH1 has aided in the negative image, and
stereotype that has been painted around people within the black community. While VH1 has played a
big part in this, I do not think anyone has played a bigger role on the image, and portrayal of black
people, than black people themselves.
When I watch these shows on VH1, its nearly inevitable to notice vast amount of outrages, and off the
wall things that occur each episode. Throughout the show you are liable to see anything from a man
taking his child to the park to play,

In vitro dissolution studies Relative in vitro dissolution behaviour of pure docetaxel and optimized
SNEP was assessed in simulated gastric fluid without enzyme (500 mL; pH 1.2; 37±0.5°C) as
dissolution medium using USP type II paddle apparatus (Electrolab, India) at a paddle rotation speed
of 50 rpm. At predetermined time points, an aliquot of 5 mL was withdrawn and equal volume of the
fresh dissolution medium was replaced to maintain the medium volume constant. All the samples were
filtered using Millipore membrane filter (0.45 µm, Millipore, USA), diluted and the concentration of
docetaxel was assayed by HPLC. Various dissolution parameters such as dissolution efficiency (DE),
mean dissolution time (MDT), initial dissolution rate (IDR), and mean dissolution rate (MDR) were
calculated to assess the dissolution profiles [29,30]. Solid state characterization Fourier transform

Essay on Cloning
It all started back in the fifties when James Watson and Francis Crick discovered the structure of DNA
(D Souza NA). Ever since there has been talk of human and animal cloning. It all seemed out of reach
and basically impossible, but in 1997 that all changed when a sheep, named Dolly, was the first ever
mammal to be cloned. She was cloned for the purpose of curing disease and research on animal organs
for human transplantation (Schaeffer 3). Now that scientists know that it is possible to clone literally
anything with DNA, the world has become a rather scary place.
This raises the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The subject of animal cloning has provoked debate about the ethics of interfering with nature as well
as about the danger of using laboratory means to accomplish what habitat preservation and other
conservation measures cannot (Gugliotta A3). Now there is talk that they are going to start cloning
animals that have been extinct from ten to thousands of years ago. Scientists are contemplating the
possibility of cloning a 20,000 year old woolly mammoth from a block of ice in northern Siberia and
are planning to use an elephant for it is surrogate mother (Gugliotta A3). This is just crazy, I don t
think that I need to remind every one of the movie Jurassic Park. Do we want to move into a world of
genetically engineered animals? I definitely do not; these animals became extinct for a reason and who
are we to say that it is time for them to roam to earth again?
Another type of cloning that is now being investigated is the use of biotechnology to help infertile
couples have children. Even Ian Wilmut, the scientist who cloned Dolly and has come out publicly
against human cloning, was not trying to help sheep have genetically related children (Thomas 47).
This technique to impregnate infertile couples is basically the same that they are using on the animals.
First an egg is removed from a woman and all of its genetics are then stripped. Then the cells from the
donor are

Positive Psychological Analysis
In class on Monday, we had a very engaging presentation on positive psychology and how flourishing
shapes our perspective to be the successful young adults we are today. Positive psychology is the
study of promotion for successful functioning. Building enabling conditions for a life worth living is
vital to being satisfied with our lives and within ourselves. A few enabling conditions for a life worth
living for my own perspectives is my resilience, my supportive buffers, and using my signature
strength to help others.
Being resilient is an essential quality to living a well rounded, happy, auspicious life. Resiliency is one
of the main four areas of positive psychology. Having fortitude and backbone even during times of
tragedy is a critical component to having a high emotional intelligence and inner strength. During my
childhood I had many risk factors that might have caused me to deteriorate and allow myself to let
those misfortunes take over my entire life. Growing up we were lower middle class, my father worked
in construction and my mother was an at home CNA to an elderly woman. My brother has severe

a negative experience into a positive one. Although I still have periods of grief, I know my dad lives
on in me. Every accomplishment I achieve, I think of him. My father would not want me to be
depressed. He would want me to be happy and move on with my life. I view this as the reason why I
have the inner strength I do as a young adult. I will never forget my dad and the times we shared. I
understand the reality of loss. I learned to appreciate the time I have with those I care about. Time is
fragile, we never know when we could lose somebody. Allowing myself to grieve, but trying to find
meaning and appreciation in every hardship I faced enabled me to become

Case Study Of Costa Crociere
Costa Crociere S.p.A. is an Italian cruise line company. It was founded in 1854 in Genoa as a cargo
shipping company. In the first decades of the XX century, the operations expanded at great speed until
1947, when passenger transportation services between Italy and South America were introduced. In
the following years the company converted all its business full time cruising and in the 90 s it became
one of the biggest cruise operators in Europe.
Until 1997, Costa Crociere was a family owned business, but that year the majority of its stakes were
sold to Carnival Corporation Plc, an American conglomerate that owns some of the most important
cruise line companies in the world. Costa Crociere, now also known as Costa Cruises Group remained
in control of the Italian operations and became also responsible for AIDA Cruises in Germany ... Show

At popular level, De Falco s order phrase to Schettino Vada a bordo, cazzo! ( Go back on board, for

Complications of IVF
About 16% of heterosexual couples ages 18 44 are experiencing infertility. Indeed, it is seen in
previous studies that the older the woman the higher the rate of infertility, but recent studies have
indicated that couples ages 19 29 the rate of infertility has increased in a range from 7% to 13.7%. In
addition, infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after a whole year of intercourse without the
use of contraception. Infertility has a very high emotional impact on couples. According to Sher, Davis
and Stoess (2005) When asked what they considered to be a primary problem in their lives, almost 80
percent of the couples replied that it was their inability to conceive. It usually causes emotional pain
amongst couples. Some methods usually used to treat infertility include counseling, surgery to repair
any anatomical damage and drugs to help with ovulation and sperm function. (Sher et al., 2005)The
last poplar method usually used in North America is known as in vitro fertilization (IVF). IVF is a
process whereas the egg(s) are fertilized outside of a woman s body. When the procedure is successful,
the zygote(s) are placed in the uterus. IVF does have its advantages for woman under the maternal age
but it also has a serious risk associated with going through with the process. IVF increases the chance
of multiple births, ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome and ectopic pregnancy. Multiple births is a
result of more than one zygote being present in a woman s uterus

The Fifa World Cup Event
The FIFA World Cup, as one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world that comes around
every four years, is often assumed by potential host countries as highly profitable. Current research,
however, suggests that the economic growth experienced by these host nations due to the World Cup
event is lower than the expectations they had. Specifically, a number of economists assert that no
observable short term economic growth exists within the tourism, retailing, accommodation, and
employment sectors of each one of the host countries (Allmers Maennig, 2009). As for the long term
impacts, some scholars insist that the World Cup cannot boost the four sectors listed above (Baumann,
Robert, Bryan Engelhardt, and Victor A. Matheson 2012), while others argue that other beneficial
factors, that do not affect the host countries in the short term, generate economic profits for host
countries in the long term (Maennig, 2009). Some scholars even critique this claim, however, arguing
that the new factors won t bring profits to host countries.
In my opinion, the World Cup seems to give the allusion that it will benefit the economy right away in
the short run, but this not necessarily true. On the other hand it is beneficial to the host countries and
the international economy in the long run, assuming that different factors are considered in the long
term analysis. These factors include the novelty effect of new stadiums, the feel good effect on
citizens, and the World Cup s effect

Personal Reflection Paper On Meeting Groups At A Community
This group meeting was held in a meeting space at The Council on Recovery located in Houston, TX.
This organization offers meeting spaces for support/therapy groups to meet regularly in hopes of
adding and addiction free society. The room was setup with about 25 chairs formed in a circle with a
small opening for people to walk through. The meetings are 1 hour long. I forgot to count the number
of people but if I remember correctly it was approximately 23 people attending including myself. The
meeting that I attended was a support group for children of alcohol parents. The group is called ACA
(Adult Children of Alcoholics) and they meet weekly. The meeting that I attended was held on Friday
November 17, 2017 from 12:00pm 1:00pm. It is considered and open group and people are welcome
to come and go as they please. There is no membership but donations are accepted. The donations are
to help maintain the meeting space and other needs of the group such as materials. I was probably one
of a few people in the young adult group and there were attendees upwards of 50 60 years of age.
I arrived to the group a few minutes early and had to ask for the facilitator. The organization does not

A Preview For Tomorrows Certainty
A Preview to Tomorrows Certainty South Vietnam declared Independence in 1955 and hence, the
Republic of Vietnam was born. Under the Eisenhower administration, as an attempt to avoid
Communism spreading from North to South Vietnam, substantial funds were provided. However,
under the Kennedy administration, against advisers advise, not only money was increased, but also
military aid. Not until 1964 when American ground troops were fired on by North Vietnamese did it
turn from a Vietnamese civil war to an international war. In Washington D.C. Senator J.W. Fulbright
shared his views on America s involvement in foreign affairs in a speech, On Arrogance of Power,
1966. . While Senator Fulbright boasts about America s power, efficiency, and solidarity, he warns
everyone that to be too proud could be a downfall even in the most prosperous nations. Going as far as
to say, it is believed by many that the power America has is almost viewed as a gift from God.
Referring from the humanitarian like actions taken by the United States by not only taking on the
responsibility of instilling peace but also assisting in rebuilding the governments on a foreign land.
Fulbright believed the government should concentrate less on foreign affairs and focus more on how a
new democracy could also flourish by an example being set by a thriving America. America still today

Fake Heroes Vs Kids Wish Networks
Of all the evils in this world, few are worse than fake charities. Taking advantage of people s kindness
like that is simply inexcusable and it s depressing that this still happens in these modern times.
However, we can put an end to these monsters and it all starts with education. Of course, not everyone
has time to monitor each and every charity for signs of corruption so we took the liberty and did it for

KIDS WISH NETWORK It doesn t get much worse than the Kids Wish Network. To put things in
perspective, they operate out of a metal factory behind some gas station in Florida. Maybe the rent is

don t make any wishes come true except their own. Out of $92.7 million raised, they only paid 10.6%

INTERNATION UNION OF POLICE If you didn t hate the police enough already, here is just another
excuse. One year they raised $66.6 million. Want to guess how much they spent on direct cash aid?
0.5%. Of course, not all police are corrupt but this certainly doesn t give them a very good name.

of horrible people profiting on cancer. If you ever come across the Breast Cancer Relief Foundation,

What Is The Critique Of The Movie Trumbo
McCarthyism, an incident that invoked a dark age upon movie writers and writers in general, teaches
about how society lived in a time of fear, anger, and skepticism towards differences, just how the
starring role in the movie Trumbo (acted by yourself), which amazed me, takes the viewers through a
tour of the life of a writer affected by these negative impulses from society. Trumbo kept me
enthralled all the way through, and my attention just couldn t break away from it. Every element in it
executed remarkably well, from the vividly enriched acting, to the heavily sharp themes, to the
characters that boomed with personality, and even to the gracefully dim screenplay. There exists a
sizable amount of illustrated life lessons to love and to learn about the film not only in the movie
itself, but in its themes, its acting, and its screenplay as well. This letter to you expresses my praise for
your effort put into the movie s, and thanks you for giving us such an awesome film to review in our
class.
To begin with, the movie s screenplay fantastically dramatized the movie itself. In fact, the film s
screenplay managed to obtain a nomination for the Writers Guild of America Award in the Best
Adapted Screenplay category. One reason why it kept me entertained consists in every line of dialogue
incorporating a staggering amount of character into it, that it feels as if they recorded them in the exact
moment the characters exclaimed them. And the fantastic dialogue itself worked

The Last To See Them Alive Essay
1. Holcomb, Kansas, appeared to Capote as the very embodiment of traditional American ideas.
Discuss the importance of the setting in Holcomb. What does the novel reveal about the town? How
does the gossip surrounding the crime reflect underlying truths about Holcomb and small town
Kansas? Is the town a character or protagonist? The importance of the setting in Holcomb is because it
seemed like the least likely place for something this horrible to happen, it claimed to be an egalitarian
utopia full of cowboys. Holcomb was small, no more than 300 people total lived in the Western
Kansas town. Trains looking for exciting, dramatic, places didn t stop in this town. While it might not
have been exciting enough to visit, it was a great place to live. Since it was so small, everybody knew

terrible is going to happen. Another one of the ways Capote built suspense, at the beginning of the

Nursing Case Study Nursing
Introduction Nurses are responsible for a significant portion of clinical decisions made within the
hospital setting and their ability to clinically reason and make educated choices is vital to patient
safety and outcomes (Gillies, 2013). This essay will present a case study of a clinical decision made
by a third year nursing student working in the Emergency Department (ED) of a Gold Coast Hospital,
using the first seven steps of the Levett Jones et al., (2010) clinical reasoning cycle. Factors
influencing her methods will be taken into account, and the essay will draw from current literature to
rationalise and support claims. Background to the Case Study Mr Jones is a 42 year old male who was
bought to the ED of public hospital on the Gold Coast by the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS).
Mr Jones was experiencing 10/10 pain in his left hip after his motorcycle fell on top of him. QAS gave
him 10mg of morphine intravenous (IV) at 13:50 before arriving to the ED. When Mr Jones arrived to
the hospital at 14:20 his pain was 9/10, blood pressure (BP) 135/70, heart rate (HR) 75bpm,

Friendship in A Thousand Splendid Sons by Khaled...
Without relationships there would be no form, no creation, no intelligence, no love and no universe .
Relationships are defined as emotional bonds between people whether they are peers, parents or
admirers. This specific quote by J.J. Dewey expresses that without relationships love, specifically
ceases to exist. An important type of relationship in our society is friendship. Women, specifically
create nurturing and emotionally fulfilling bonds with each other. They can create satisfying
exchanges of ideas and feelings and find a way to increase inner strength and fulfillment in each other.

By stating this compliment Nana provided Mariam a sense of love and support. Also Nana s various
attempts of badmouthing Jalil was a way to convince Mariam to stay with her instead of her father.
This also displayed her love for Mariam since she obviously didn t want her to move away. She also
demonstrated her affection by dismissing the option of school. She conveyed her message by stating
that students would make fun of her and call her a harami. She ended her point with You re all I have.
I won t lose you to them. (pg 18.) This proves that she does not want her daughter to get hurt and that
she does not want to lose her. In addition her final commitment of suicide showcased how much
Mariam meant to her. She specifically told Mariam Don t leave me, Mariam jo. Please stay. I ll die if
you go. (pg 27.) This justifies my point about Nana finding inner strength and fulfillment through

the author is trying to show us how many operations are going on during the war. 2.How did the

shows the reader that even though the person is armed with a bazooka he is still a kind person. I think
that Solmaz is trying to show that not everyone who serves in the military is cruel. I m not really sure
if I am interpreting this right but to me, the waltz shows me the difference between what the soldier is

in which the firm designs its strategy for the next 5 years.
BSkyB (Sky) should target acquiring 30% of the yearly revenue by 2018, after five years of
systematic implementation of the extended marketing plan. The target markets of BSkyB are both
individual citizens and small business enterprises, where the later will be at the centre in the targeting.

Frances Willard s Reform
The late nineteenth century was a time of social reformation. Questions about social roles, religion,
and the overall progression of America arose from the up and coming modernizing society. These
questions would inevitably lead to political and social movements that would influence today s
society. Social reform organizations made headlines across the nation and their movements towards
developing positive social change. Frances Willard, a Christian suffragist, political activist, and
reformer for gender equality, created awareness on political issues that have affected, what are now,
basic societal standards. Moreover, these influences on political and social changes developed rules
and regulations that modernized the United States government ... Show more content on

Willard recognizes the hardships of being an activist and the negative attention that comes along with
it. However, she believes in her actions toward reform and wants to reassure her audience that they too
are praised for their efforts and that they will all be recognized for the courage they are admitting.
Willard accounts for the worldwide efforts that the World s Woman s Christian Temperance Union has
made exemplifying God s principles. She notes the importance of these principles and the need for
them to be embraced into customs and laws in order to live in an acceptable godly society. This view
of acceptance, equality, and the act of working in mission groups worldwide and promoting awareness
for those less fortunate depicts our desire to strive for those same morals in today s society. Moreover,
The Temperance Campaign which was presented in a speech by Willard in 1874, titled Everybody s
War, outlined the dangers of alcoholism and its immediate effects on American families. This speech
gave the controversial views of the modern evangelical Christian, middle class women and their belief
that sobriety and patriotism went hand and hand. Sobriety was represented as a way to strengthen
American families by living morally and by the hands of God. This speech in particular, made a clear
separation between Christianity and the consumption and selling

Consumerism In America
Why the American culture of consumption is destructive to individuals and society.
Consumerism in America has been at an all time high for years now. Consumerism refers to the
consumption of goods and services at an ever increasing rate. It is one of the many things that America
is know for. Our economy is judged by how much people spend, and if it is high then our economy
must be well off (Shukla 1). This ideology is purely materialistic and pushes people towards higher
consumption than is needed. It transforms others into overly materialistic people who cannot
distinguish the difference between wants and needs, and negatively affects those around them
including the environment because of the glorification of material wealth. It is highlighted that in a
year an American consumes 275 pounds of meat, 635 pounds of paper, energy equivalent to 7.8 metric
tons of oil, while 45 years ago, it was once the consumption of 197 pounds of meat, 366 pounds of
paper, and energy equivalent to 5.5 metric tons of oil (Goodwin, et al 1). These numbers have nearly
doubled within 45 years. That is not to mention the fact that there is a car for every two Americans.
Over consumption is very real, and resources are constantly being burned through.
However, consumerism is enjoyed by America, and there are many other countries who wish to
consume as we do. David Masci said, Indeed, more than two thirds of America s $8 trillion economy
is tied to the selling and buying of goods (1003).

Ancient Roman Dwellings Evolved Architecturally In Time
Ancient Roman dwellings evolved architecturally in time from simple huts in the earliest times, to
sophisticated and extremely long lived structures in the later Republic and Imperial Rome following
the annexation of the Greek city states. This is very evident in many Italian and Greek cities where
archaeologists have found different occupational levels, with each lower architectural strata being
much more ancient (Lavan, Özgenel, Sarantis, 2007). Typically, however, Roman architecture refers to
the period from the establishment of the Roman Republic (6 century BC) to the relocation of the
capital to Constantinople in 330AD. An architectural period supported by two great innovations: the
cement and the arch.

Wealthier people had much more elaborated houses, with multiple rooms, courtyards, gardens, and

a glimpse of how livable these houses where from surviving specimens in old villages in
Mediterranean islands, like Crete, that also preserve the Roman family structure of pater familias, in
which three or four generations live together under the leadership of the oldest male. While each sub
family has its own quarters, they all share the courtyard and dinner. The pre school cousins, and any
domestic animals, play together safely all day long in the enclosed courtyard, under the supervision of
the grandparents. Such an arrangement not only pools the resources but, also, free the parents for
working outside. In such a semi coenobitic life style, the distinction between siblings and cousins is
not as clear cut as in Western societies. However, the Roman domus also housed the servants and
slaves.
However, just like today, the vast majority of the Roman urbanites lived in cramped, multi story
apartment buildings called insulae. Even so, rich and poor people did not live segregated ghettos;
luxurious domi and shabby insulae were intermingled in the cities. At first, these buildings were made
with timber, and mud brick; however, the concrete allowed the Roman tenement buildings to reach
new heights, with some being seven stories

Symbolism In St George And The Dragon
Known from legend, St. George is the knight who is told to have slain a dragon in Libya to save a
young woman, generally known as holding the title of princess, as expressed in Raphael s painting St.
George and the Dragon. In this oil painting, the dragon is seemingly the embodiment of evil in the
town while St. George is the knight that risks his life to slay and rid of the evil within the town in a
somewhat chivalrous manner. In St. George and the Dragon, Raphael expresses Christianity combined
with chivalry in his painting through the use of small details, symbolic representations, contrast,
human figures, and the depiction of these human figures and or characters. Raphael could have done
this due to the rise of Christianity in the Renaissance era and chivalry in art at the time.
The expression of Christianity can be represented through symbolism, color, and the details of
Raphael s painting. The dragon can be seen as symbolic of the Devil in Christianity and in turn St.
George slaying the dragon can be represented as the destruction of the Devil and all evil within that
setting. The color of the dragon is dark and is viciously drawn which contrasts with the white and
seemingly lightness of St. George s horse that brings out the good and evil within the painting. This
corresponds with Christianity as the Devil is normally depicted as dark and cruel compared to the
white that represents purity of those who are righteous. Continuing on with the darkness of the dragon,

ABSTRACT
In the present work, PVAAg nanocomposite films with thickness 0.18 mm, constant silver content
(0.4 wt. %) and different time of reactions (0.1, 3, 5, 7, 9 h) were prepared by chemical reduction
methods. Structure, surface topology, photoluminescence and electrical properties of PVAAg
nanocomposite were studied using x ray diffraction (XRD), electrometer, atomic force microscope
(AFM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were used to characterize the prepared
nanocomposites. X ray patterns showed the existence of Ag nanoparticles within the PVA polymeric
matrix with face centered cube (FCC) phase. It was found that the root mean square (RMS) roughness
decrease with increasing the time of reaction. While PL intensity at 427 nm increase as the time of
reaction is increased. Frank poole emission is the prevailing transport mechanism for all samples.

company blamed its problems on the popularity of low carbohydrate diets like Atkins and South
Beach at the time. But the SEC began probing Krispy Kreme s accounting for franchise buybacks and

The witness understood that it was commonplace at Krispy Kreme to channel stuff in order to meet
Wall Street expectations, according to the complaint.
Some could also argue that Krispy Kreme auditors Price WaterHouse Coopers (PWC) should have
noticed a pattern of large shipments at the end of the year with corresponding credits the following
fiscal year during the course of their audit. Typical audit procedures would be to confirm with KKD s
customers their purchases. In addition monthly variations analysis should have led someone to
question the spike in doughnut shipments at fiscal year end.
Accounting Irregularities:
The SEC is investigating if Krispy Kreme used questionable methods to inflate profit when it bought
back its Michigan franchise for $32.1 million last year. PWC refused to sign off on quarterly results. It
was only after the firm retained the services of outside legal counsel to verify the methodology that
Krispy Kreme was allowed to put the matter behind them. The outcome of the SEC investigation is
still pending.
If PWC were not already under scrutiny for failing to detect inflated sales, PWC may have considered
signing off on the accounting methodology based on immateriality. However, under SOX

Three Stages Of Play By Sara Smilansky
Sara Smilansky Physical/Manipulative
Smilansky developed three stages of play. She was initially working together with Jean Piaget, but
they went separate ways, so she expanded on it and developed these theories to: functional play,
constructive play, dramatic play. The best description of Smilansky s functional play is when, babies
are throwing their toys out of the cot time after another, or are banging their spoon on the table for
hours non stop, and this is actually a way of them showing that they re playing. Adults and Teenagers
also use functional play when confronted with a new object or activity to explore. Once they have
mastered the objects or activity then they start to really play.

Evidence of onlooker play is when a child or children are near a group of other children and begin to
follow the actions or copying what they are doing while playing.
Parallel play This is commonly found in toddler years and sometimes into the earlier years of
preschool. Children will now be able tolerate other children standing near them when playing and
occasionally when they re using the same equipment. However, they will have a limited amount of
meaningful interactions with other children.
Associative play This is first seen usually in the early preschool years. Children will begin to play and
talk with each other in dramatic play situations where roles may be taken on. Even if these roles are
usually not sustained for any length of time.
Cooperative play Cooperative play occurs in the later preschool years. Children are able to take on
roles and sustain them for the duration of the play. The group of children have agreed upon goals and
roles for the play. In this stage of play, leaders and followers emerge within groups. Roles are
delegated and tasks distributed within the group. There is a common goal and children will play

The Power Of Love In A Midsummer s Night Dream
Love is a powerful emotion, capable of turning the most rational people into crazed, irrational lovers.
In A Midsummer s Night Dream, Shakespeare centralizes his comedy around the theme of human love
as a powerful, transformative force. Through the use of a magical love potion, the characters within
the play are blinded by fierce passion and their sight is narrowed to see only what the lover selectively
chooses to see. As a result of the power of love, the sensible become irrational and emotions that stem
from love, such as jealousy and desperation, give birth to hysterical chaos. In A Midsummer s Night

Inner Beauty in H. Rider Haggard s Novel, She Essay
In H. Rider Haggard s novel She, two men go in search of an immortal queen with whom they both
fall in love. The men, Holly and Leo, are opposites in nearly every way; one is intelligent but
physically repulsive, the other handsome but rather slow and boring. From the beginning, they are
nicknamed Beauty and the Beast, and like Beauty and the Beast, Leo is admired by those around him
while Holly is rejected and isolated.
Between them is Ayesha, or She who must be obeyed: beautiful but dangerous, intelligent and devoted
but destructive, all powerful but isolated by her power. Although She falls desperately in love with
Leo, it is clear that her strongest bond, one of mutual understanding, respect, and love, is with Holly.

At a time not long after Darwin published his theory of evolution, when it was (as it still is) a source
of much debate and controversy, Holly s apelike appearance represents an even greater strike against
him than mere ugliness. It implies primitiveness, and causes those around him to view him not just as
an inferior human, but as an animal. He is, to them, truly a Beast.
Perhaps the most important aspect of Holly s ugliness is not its mere presence, but the isolation it
causes. He is treated as an animal by much of society, and as a result he harbors much bitterness
towards the human race. He is especially bitter towards women, which is understandable given that
nearly all women shunned him, and the only woman he ever loved rejected him. If I am Beauty, who
are you? she said while showing him their reflection in the mirror. (8) This insult haunts him all of his
life, and causes him to be extremely misogynistic until he meets Ayesha.
Leo Vincey is Holly s adopted son, and the man with whom Ayesha falls in love. Recalling the day
that he met five year old Leo, Holly says, I do not think I ever saw such a perfect child before or since
(19). Leo is handsome and popular, and because of his good looks Holly must constantly battle to
keep the women away from him. But Leo s appearance is more than simply handsome: it is almost
godlike. Holly s description of him as a statue of the youthful Apollo hints at his Greek ancestry, and

Tacitus Interpretations Of Nero
Many historians, such as Tacitus in The Annals, Seneca in his Letters from A Stoic, Plutarch in his
Moralia, and David Potter in his Constantine the Emperor, wrote about Nero that his full name was the
Imperator Nero Cladius Divi Claudius filius Caesar Augustus Germanicus. All three historians
interpreted on this imperator with mostly same feelings and understanding that they showed the
reality, evidences, and the results of his acts during his reign. The interpretations of the historians and
scholars are directly related to historiography, which is a serious study, examining scholars
interpretations and their methodologies. The primary sources for Nero are Tacitus Annals and Seneca s
Letters from A Stoic that these two scholars interpretations would be useful to understand what Nero
did. Because of this, the primary sources texts were translated into ... Show more content on

Therefore, for the historiography about Nero, these two primary scholars used their analyzing skills,
their methodologies, their interpretations, and first person witnesses, especially Seneca. For example,
Seneca states that Nero willingly caused his mother s murder with no mercy. Another example is that
Tacitus states that the Great Fire in Rome was horrible, burnt the places for five consecutive days, and
ruined some market places in Rome. Tacitus also interprets that Nero blamed on Christians for this
fire, although there was no evidence about that. It was just assumption, but most of scholars believed
that the Great Fire in Rome was a plot by Nero. Seneca and Tacitus also state that there was a
Christian persecution done by Nero, and David Potter (1910 1971), an American historian, interpreted
just like Seneca and Tacitus had done. He mentioned about a Christian persecution in his book,
Constantine the

Indians Impact On The American Revolution
Indian Removal
Looking throughout the overwhelming events the American Revolution had on everyone involved,
allows us to examine how the governments policies toward the Indians changed over time. It shows
how the policy changes effected the Indians as well as the Americans , their attitudes toward each
other as the American s pushed westward and the Indians resisted. Then the actions on both sides
which lead up to the final removal of all Indians to west of the Mississippi in 1830 s.
The government as well as the Americans attitudes toward the Indians at the beginning of the
Revolution was pretty much the same as Thomas Jefferson s, which was that given time the Indians
could possibly change their ways and conform to white society s way of life. The Indian removal had
a profound impact on both the Indians as well as the white settlers. Each one felt they were justified in
their actions because each was doing what was best for their families and their way of life. The
Indians felt they were between a rock and a hard place. Whom to side with? On one hand, were the
British who seemed to want to protect the Indian territories, on the other were the Patriots who were
aggressively taking more and more land. Most stayed neutral waiting to see the outcome, some chose
the British. Chief Dragging Canoe of the Cherokee tribe attacked white settlement in Virginia and
western Carolinas around the summer of 1776. In the eyes of white society all Indians are the same,
this had a

The only reason that we would be risking environmental safety is because during construction, some
of the materials that are used could be harmful to the environment. However, by doing this
construction to make our public spaces more efficient, we are not risking the safety of any of our

From an economist s point of view, wage increases should be awarded as a result of increased
productivity. Productivity is defined by economists as the amount of physical output that can be
produced per working hour therefore an increase in productivity can only occurs as a result of this:
increased capital per worker, better management, improved technology, increase labor skill, and
economies of scale.
This definition of productivity allows the reader to conclude that rises in output per hour for each
worker are more likely to happen in sectors of the economy which rely heavily on machinery and
equipment during the process of production. By way of contrast, the public sector relies heavily on
people.
The public sector, despite improvements in technology, expansion of information and knowledge
which have provided most people with access to ways of improving their work and performance, the
fact that this sector of the economy relies so heavily on people and it s managed by the government in
one of its several roles makes it very inefficient. However its expected that the government should

Civil Rights During The 20th Century
Today, we stand at a precipice threatening a definitive split between Blacks and Jews, and Jews of
Color and Jews. The recent platform of Black Lives Matters denounces Israel as an apartheid state. A
respect for the history of Black political thought demands we not forget Israel and Jews (of all races)
remain a vulnerable minority.
Jews and Black Americans are most often linked together during the 20th century Civil Rights
movement. These communities were victims of institutionalized discrimination and social shunning.
Jim Crow signage proclaimed: No Jews, No Dogs, No Negroes. At the height of the Civil Rights era,
Jews and Blacks marched together and were martyred during the Freedom Rides for voter
registrations.
The 19th and 20th centuries were filled with social and political change from the outlawing of slavery,
the Labor Movements advancement of workers rights, and WWI and WWII toppling of empires and
raising up new nations. Unfortunately, Blacks and Jews continued as subjects of racism and anti
Semitism, with increasing violence. Black enfranchisement was met with government sanctioned
White Supremacist aggression (such as the Klu Klux Klan). Similarly, the Holocaust highlights Jewish
vulnerability. Esteemed historian and Pan Africanist WEB Dubois exclaimed, Every child knows that
ancient Jewish civilization and religion centered in Palestine... When it comes therefore to an issue of
original possession and ownership, there is no final answer for any

  • 2. Oz as Utopia Taylor Wilton Dr. Ethna Lay The Wonderful Worlds of Utopia Americans crave Oz because of it s utopian vision. On the surface, Oz appears to be a perfect utopia to Dorothy. When she first arrives, Oz is bright, colorful and full of magic and wonder while her home in Kansas is dull, lifeless and devoid of hope. In Kansas, it s as if the citizens are stuck with no real plans or goals for the future. In Oz, traveling down the elaborate, intertwined yellow brick road offers Dorothy a great chance for adventure and hope and magic. This also goes for Elphaba from the Broadway show, Wicked. Bot of their desire is to go home. The end of the yellow brick road and the Wizard offers a chance for both of their prayers to be answered. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cashdan claims that The Wizard of Oz tends to focus on shortcomings in the self as opposed excesses (218). The themes in each fairy tale focus on different subjects. For instance, the theme in Snow White is vanity, and how looks won t get you anywhere. In other traditional fairy tales like Cinderella, they teach that intelligence, hard work and courage count for little unless one has acquaintances in high places (Cashdan, 9). The Wizard of Oz focuses on more inner conflicts than other stories such as Snow White and Cinderella. The story is about Dorothy s journey to make herself a happier person and find a happier life. Helping her companions fulfil their destinies helps her fulfil her own (218). Cashdan also explains how intelligence can outweigh physical attributes. This is comforting for both children and adults alike because, overall, no one wants to be juded on outer appearance, even if they are indeed good looking. Intelligence is more important in the long run. In Wicked, Glinda is obsessed with her prettiness and seems to outweigh Elphaba s popularity, but Elphaba is the one who triumphs in the end when the teacher gives her special privelages with a wand because she realizes how smart and gifted she is, disregarding her looks completely. Also, in The Wizard of Oz, Scarecrow symbolizes how uncomfortable it is to feel unintelligent. He knows his lot in life will be vastly improved if he can make sense of the world. And ... • 4. Health, Education, And Women Raisa Feliz and Emmett Rafferty Interim Report #3 Health, Education and Women Over the past few decades Brazil has made major improvements to its healthcare system. Before 1988, half of Brazil s population did not have health care coverage (World Health Organization). This changed when Brazil implemented Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde) which provided universal free healthcare coverage for its citizens. Since its enactment, 75% of Brazil s population now rely on Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) as their sole provider of health coverage, making it the largest public health system in the world (World Health Organization). SUS receives its funding primarily through federal and local taxation totaling $208 billion (Deliotte). However, this large amount of spending is not reflected in the quality of healthcare provided to Brazilians. Brazil has an estimated 2.5 hospital beds per 1,000 citizens and the beds are of bad quality and are poorly distributed (Deliotte). Brazil s Federal Medical Council conducted a survey that showed 93% of Brazilians considered the healthcare systems to be either very bad or mediocre (Deliotte). While more Brazilians have access to healthcare than ever before, the quality of care does not meet the requirements that would allow the system to be truly effective. Despite its operational healthcare inefficiencies, Brazil s life expectancy has been rapidly increasing since SUS s implementation, as shown in Figure 1. Source: World Bank A ... • 5. How African Americans Are Portrayed On The Show Essay I am a pretty big fan of reality TV because it entertains me. To see the lives of different celebrities, and to see what they do and go through on a day to day basis, in my opinion, is worth tuning in to once a week. Sometimes the stuff shown on reality TV be funny, but other times they can be rather disappointing. TV station, VH1, is home to an abundance of reality television shows, however, very few of those shows are more popular than the series Love and Hip Hop. Love and Hip Hop has been going on for several seasons now, which obviously indicates there are many people that consistently watch the show. The show may be very entertaining to watch, but the problem is how African Americans are portrayed on the show. VH1 over the years has taken advantage of people s flaws by televising them and profiting off the entertainment these flaws provide. They have done it to people of various races, but no group is a greater victim than blacks. I think it is safe to say that VH1 has aided in the negative image, and stereotype that has been painted around people within the black community. While VH1 has played a big part in this, I do not think anyone has played a bigger role on the image, and portrayal of black people, than black people themselves. When I watch these shows on VH1, its nearly inevitable to notice vast amount of outrages, and off the wall things that occur each episode. Throughout the show you are liable to see anything from a man taking his child to the park to play, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Essay on Cloning It all started back in the fifties when James Watson and Francis Crick discovered the structure of DNA (D Souza NA). Ever since there has been talk of human and animal cloning. It all seemed out of reach and basically impossible, but in 1997 that all changed when a sheep, named Dolly, was the first ever mammal to be cloned. She was cloned for the purpose of curing disease and research on animal organs for human transplantation (Schaeffer 3). Now that scientists know that it is possible to clone literally anything with DNA, the world has become a rather scary place. This raises the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The subject of animal cloning has provoked debate about the ethics of interfering with nature as well as about the danger of using laboratory means to accomplish what habitat preservation and other conservation measures cannot (Gugliotta A3). Now there is talk that they are going to start cloning animals that have been extinct from ten to thousands of years ago. Scientists are contemplating the possibility of cloning a 20,000 year old woolly mammoth from a block of ice in northern Siberia and are planning to use an elephant for it is surrogate mother (Gugliotta A3). This is just crazy, I don t think that I need to remind every one of the movie Jurassic Park. Do we want to move into a world of genetically engineered animals? I definitely do not; these animals became extinct for a reason and who are we to say that it is time for them to roam to earth again? Another type of cloning that is now being investigated is the use of biotechnology to help infertile couples have children. Even Ian Wilmut, the scientist who cloned Dolly and has come out publicly against human cloning, was not trying to help sheep have genetically related children (Thomas 47). This technique to impregnate infertile couples is basically the same that they are using on the animals. First an egg is removed from a woman and all of its genetics are then stripped. Positive Psychological Analysis In class on Monday, we had a very engaging presentation on positive psychology and how flourishing shapes our perspective to be the successful young adults we are today. Positive psychology is the study of promotion for successful functioning. Building enabling conditions for a life worth living is vital to being satisfied with our lives and within ourselves. A few enabling conditions for a life worth living for my own perspectives is my resilience, my supportive buffers, and using my signature strength to help others. Being resilient is an essential quality to living a well rounded, happy, auspicious life. Resiliency is one of the main four areas of positive psychology. Having fortitude and backbone even during times of tragedy is a critical component to having a high emotional intelligence and inner strength. • 13. The Fifa World Cup Event The FIFA World Cup, as one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world that comes around every four years, is often assumed by potential host countries as highly profitable. Current research, however, suggests that the economic growth experienced by these host nations due to the World Cup event is lower than the expectations they had. Specifically, a number of economists assert that no observable short term economic growth exists within the tourism, retailing, accommodation, and employment sectors of each one of the host countries (Allmers Maennig, 2009). As for the long term impacts, some scholars insist that the World Cup cannot boost the four sectors listed above (Baumann, Robert, Bryan Engelhardt, and Victor A. Matheson 2012), while others argue that other beneficial factors, that do not affect the host countries in the short term, generate economic profits for host countries in the long term (Maennig, 2009). Some scholars even critique this claim, however, arguing that the new factors won t bring profits to host countries. In my opinion, the World Cup seems to give the allusion that it will benefit the economy right away in the short run, but this not necessarily true. On the other hand it is beneficial to the host countries and the international economy in the long run, assuming that different factors are considered in the long term analysis. In fact, the film s screenplay managed to obtain a nomination for the Writers Guild of America Award in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. Dewey expresses that without relationships love, specifically ceases to exist. An important type of relationship in our society is friendship. Women, specifically create nurturing and emotionally fulfilling bonds with each other. They can create satisfying exchanges of ideas and feelings and find a way to increase inner strength and fulfillment in each other. This also displayed her love for Mariam since she obviously didn t want her to move away. She also demonstrated her affection by dismissing the option of school. She conveyed her message by stating that students would make fun of her and call her a harami. She ended her point with You re all I have. I won t lose you to them. (pg 18.) This proves that she does not want her daughter to get hurt and that she does not want to lose her. In addition her final commitment of suicide showcased how much Mariam meant to her. She specifically told Mariam Don t leave me, Mariam jo. Please stay. I ll die if you go. (pg 27.) This justifies my point about Nana finding inner strength and fulfillment through Mariam. Even though she went through several hardships in her youth she was able to move on by seeking support and company from Mariam s presence. Throughout the novel Laila s relationship with her daughter, Aziza was a powerful and familial bond. Her pregnancy brought her hope and strength since her child was the only reminder of her one true love, Tariq. • 25. Consumerism In America Why the American culture of consumption is destructive to individuals and society. Consumerism in America has been at an all time high for years now. Consumerism refers to the consumption of goods and services at an ever increasing rate. It is one of the many things that America is know for. Our economy is judged by how much people spend, and if it is high then our economy must be well off (Shukla 1). This ideology is purely materialistic and pushes people towards higher consumption than is needed. It transforms others into overly materialistic people who cannot distinguish the difference between wants and needs, and negatively affects those around them including the environment because of the glorification of material wealth. It is highlighted that in a year an American consumes 275 pounds of meat, 635 pounds of paper, energy equivalent to 7.8 metric tons of oil, while 45 years ago, it was once the consumption of 197 pounds of meat, 366 pounds of paper, and energy equivalent to 5.5 metric tons of oil (Goodwin, et al 1). These numbers have nearly doubled within 45 years. That is not to mention the fact that there is a car for every two Americans. Over consumption is very real, and resources are constantly being burned through. However, consumerism is enjoyed by America, and there are many other countries who wish to consume as we do. David Masci said, Indeed, more than two thirds of America s $8 trillion economy is tied to the selling and buying of goods (1003). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. Symbolism In St George And The Dragon Known from legend, St. George is the knight who is told to have slain a dragon in Libya to save a young woman, generally known as holding the title of princess, as expressed in Raphael s painting St. George and the Dragon. In this oil painting, the dragon is seemingly the embodiment of evil in the town while St. George is the knight that risks his life to slay and rid of the evil within the town in a somewhat chivalrous manner. In St. George and the Dragon, Raphael expresses Christianity combined with chivalry in his painting through the use of small details, symbolic representations, contrast, human figures, and the depiction of these human figures and or characters. Raphael could have done this due to the rise of Christianity in the Renaissance era and chivalry in art at the time. The expression of Christianity can be represented through symbolism, color, and the details of Raphael s painting. The dragon can be seen as symbolic of the Devil in Christianity and in turn St. George slaying the dragon can be represented as the destruction of the Devil and all evil within that setting. The color of the dragon is dark and is viciously drawn which contrasts with the white and seemingly lightness of St. George s horse that brings out the good and evil within the painting. This corresponds with Christianity as the Devil is normally depicted as dark and cruel compared to the white that represents purity of those who are righteous. Seneca and Tacitus also state that there was a Christian persecution done by Nero, and David Potter (1910 1971), an American historian, interpreted just like Seneca and Tacitus had done. Productivity is defined by economists as the amount of physical output that can be produced per working hour therefore an increase in productivity can only occurs as a result of this: increased capital per worker, better management, improved technology, increase labor skill, and economies of scale. The recent platform of Black Lives Matters denounces Israel as an apartheid state. A respect for the history of Black political thought demands we not forget Israel and Jews (of all races) remain a vulnerable minority. Jews and Black Americans are most often linked together during the 20th century Civil Rights movement. These communities were victims of institutionalized discrimination and social shunning. Jim Crow signage proclaimed: No Jews, No Dogs, No Negroes. At the height of the Civil Rights era, Jews and Blacks marched together and were martyred during the Freedom Rides for voter registrations. The 19th and 20th centuries were filled with social and political change from the outlawing of slavery, the Labor Movements advancement of workers rights, and WWI and WWII toppling of empires and raising up new nations. Unfortunately, Blacks and Jews continued as subjects of racism and anti Semitism, with increasing violence. Black enfranchisement was met with government sanctioned White Supremacist aggression (such as the Klu Klux Klan). Similarly, the Holocaust highlights Jewish vulnerability.
