The Discourse Of Multiculturalism In Canada
1. The Discourse Of Multiculturalism In Canada
Canada is seen as a democratic society. It is the belief that as Canadians one is supposed to promote
the principles of justice, equality and fairness. In doing so, Canada has become one of the most
diverse country in the world. Most Canadian universities, such as Ryerson, also aims to promote
these democratic values. This done through advertising Canadian universities as inclusive and
welcoming to all students. However, this appears to be a fallacy. The reason why this is a fallacy is
because Canadian society promotes racism and discrimination in the subtlest way possible. Society
does this through making anti–discrimination or anti–inequity policies, but people still do not see
how it perpetuates. In Frances Henry and authors Race, racialization ... Show more content on

According to Henry & Tator, a discourse is "the production of knowledge through language and
social practices that brings meaning to interactions with others" (2010). Now in terms of the
discourse of multiculturalism, it is described as "the tolerance, accommodation, sensitivity, harmony,
and diversity of other cultures" (Henry & Tator, 2010). Again, multiculturalism is seen as a good
quality in Canadian society. However, in Canadian universities the reality is that people focus on the
differences between others based on skin color. In the article, Henry et al. argues that Canadian
universities are not as tolerant of diversity as it seems to be. "Many racialized and Indigenous
faculty members and students feel increasingly marginalized in the university environment due to
the traditional, white, homogenous character that is continuously practiced" (Henry, et al., 2016). In
other words, even though the university advertises itself as ethnically and racially diverse, racialized
and Indigenous peoples culture seems to be overlooked. Which most often leads to stereotyping (or
an overgeneralization of a group of people based on race). When it comes to those attempting to
implement equity policies, it may be met with backlash from non – racialized faculty members or
students. The reason being that one may not want to address issues of inequity. Canadian
universities would rather decide which differences can be tolerated and which differences cannot be
tolerated. In other words, because the dominant culture claims to be superior to other races,
racialized and Indigenous peoples are viewed as inferior. This should not be the case. Instead,
Canadian universities rather than finding changing this, try to uphold a good reputation and
continuously get more students or faculty members to apply to one's university. One thing that the
article did not mention is that, many students of ethnic

For better or worse, Canada is considered the exemplar multicultural society. Toronto, Montreal, and
Vancouver are among the world's most diverse cities, and the Canadian government appears content
that the typical immigrant profile is, and will continue to be, non–European. Furthermore, unlike
centre–right parties across Europe that have declared that multiculturalism is dead (e.g., Daily Mail
2011), the governing Conservative Party of Canada has been busy crafting a strategy aimed at
courting the votes of "new Canadians," which has paid dividends for the party in recent federal
elections; at the same time, the Conservative Party has introduced "subtle restrictiveness" into
Canada's citizenship and refugee policy to appease its traditional conservative base (Marwah,
Triadafilopoulos, and White ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Does this mean that all is, indeed, well with multiculturalism in Canada? The majority of the
contributors to the works under review would disagree. A controversy that has continually plagued
scholarly analysis of multiculturalism is that the meaning of multiculturalism is actually quite hard
to pin down: "it is simultaneously used as a sociological label for an objective situation of diversity
and as a moral stance that cultural diversity is a desirable feature of a given society as well as the
different types of ways in which the state could recognise and support it" (Meer and Modood 2012,
179). All of the monographs under review here, however, are clear in their respective treatments of
the term. The authors quite diligently define multiculturalism to fit within the scope of their research
aims. In Becoming Multicultural, Triadafilos Triadafilopoulos is minimally concerned with state
support for ethnocultural groups, but rather explains why Canada and Germany developed into "de
facto multicultural societies" by the end of the twentieth century via "liberalizing changes to their
migration and citizenship policies" (2012, 2). The framework of

9. Multiculturalism in Canada
Multiculturalism in Canada An Overview The term "multiculturalism" has been used by the
Canadians in two different perspectives. The first use of this word is descriptive; meanwhile the
other one is normative. The former sense implies the description of various religious and cultural
groups that the Canadian population consists of. The nation of Canada is based on people from
various races, religions and cultural backgrounds and there is a general acceptance of cultural
pluralism in the country. Since the nineteenth century, Canada has experienced various waves of
immigration (Wayland, 1997). Moreover, it has been reported that by the 1980s approximately 40
percent of the people were of origins other than British and French; the two being the largest and
oldest groups of people in Canada (Troper, 1989). The history of Canada gives a great deal of
importance to the relationship that existed between the French and the British people. According to
the statistics, the major population of the country at the beginning of the 21st century was composed
of people from outside French and British heritage; meanwhile there were many people who
presented themselves as "visible minorities". The main purpose of this paper is to make an analysis
of something of the major questions that arise in minds of the people pertaining to the concept of
multiculturalism in Canada. We shall discuss in this paper, whether or not multiculturalism is
working for Canada. Furthermore, we shall analyze

Since the era of jetliners, firsts introduced in the 1950s, new interactions have resulted in a more
globalised world, which has increased relationship between the many countries and cultures. The
relationship between the countries makes cultural diversity even more important for Canada and
Ontario. Multiculturalism has some opponent; however, the positive benefits for Canada and
Ontario are economic and cultural.
Opponent of multiculturalism argues that the policies promote the divisiveness of Canada and are
taking over land that should be available to all Canadians. The former Minister for Multiculturalism
and Citizenship states that opponent of multiculturalism makes immigrant hyphenated Canadian
instead of Canadian (Weiner, 1991). This happened when the Hindu community tried to build a
waterfront cemetery in the GTA. Finding a city willing to support the project was complicated and
they scouted as far as Niagara. They had little luck, until the Mayor of Pickering agreed to have it
built in a Pickering park, this luck dried up since Pickering council didn't give ... Show more content

Contrary to the claim of the opponent that multiculturalism seeks to create hyphenated–Canadian,
multiculturalism seeks the opposite, according to a former cabinet minister: "it does so not to keep
Canadians apart from one another; it does so because a rich and broad cultural heritage is something
in which all Canadians share, individually and collectively [...]". (Weiner, 1991) Cultural diversity
does not weaken Canadian nor does it divide Canadian. Cultural diversity has benefited since
industrial lands have changed to be more welcoming. The construction of Pearson Airport has led to
major industrial development in Etobicoke, which changed with the Hindu temple, the only non–
industrial building in that neighborhood. (Lista, p. 67) Canada has become more culturally diverse
since the introduction of new cultures and cultural

17. What Is Multiculturalism In Canada
Multiculturalism through many perspectives
Multiculturalism is understood by many as the social equality of various cultures and religions
within a united society. To some, multiculturalism is a policy, and to others, it is a virtue or an
ideology. In Canada, it is a policy, and amongst all of the nations of the world, Canada was one of
the first countries to establish it nation–wide, back on July 21st 1988. According to the Canadian
Encyclopedia, "the idea is seen as constitutive of Canadian identity at many levels" (Burnet &
Driedger, Canadian Encyclopedia/13 June 2016). Whether it is considered beneficial or detrimental,
the policy of multiculturalism throughout its years gave rise to contradictory viewpoints affecting
the citizen population, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Passing the national multiculturalism law starting from the time period of the 1970's was a decision–
making process at the federal level. The next year, in 1972, a multicultural Directorate was chosen
to assist in the process of maintaining multicultural programs. Two years after the declaration of
multiculturalism by Trudeau, a Ministry of Multiculturalism was inaugurated to oversee
multicultural enterprises in government sectors. In 1985, when Brian Mulroney was the prime
minister, the House of Commons created a committee for the advancement of multiculturalism. This
committee discussed for the passing of a multiculturalism policy, and the establishment of the
Department of Multiculturalism, in 1987. The discussions of the multiculturalism committee came
into effect with the Multiculturalism Act in July 1988, which was passed in parliament. Parliament
also created the Department of Multiculturalism after this act. The timeline of 1971–1992 consisted
of many extensive processes at the government level leading to multiculturalism in Canada. Also,
when the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was established in 1982, a clause allowed courts to
consider Canada's multiculturalism at high levels of decision making. According to the Human
Rights Commissioner at the time, it was a method to help courts balance individual and
multicultural rights. Moreover, there was a section of the Royal Commission Bilingualism and

Finally I will discuss how Canada is a multicultural nation, and how this shapes how we look at

with working in the factory environment helps me realize how culturally diverse Canada is.
Therefore, I will discuss multiculturalism and how this term is important for us to learn if we want
to understand race, racism and ethnicity. As we know, Canada is known to be the most multicultural
nation in the world today, as well, Canada is known to bring in millions of immigrants every year.

post colonialism and as well related to this idea of assimilation policy and how Canada attempts to
transform indigenous people into Europeans. Secondly, I discussed my experience with working in a
factory environment when I was at the age of 18 with immigrant workers. In this paragraph I
discussed how my personal experience helped me understand how immigrants are categorized and
segregated in the blue collar job industry and as well how immigrants are divided and ruled by the
working class as well bringing up this idea that immigrants do the 'dirty work in society'. Finally, I
discussed how Canada is a multicultural nation and how we understand Canada as a vertical mosaic

Canadian experience has demonstrated that multiculturalism energizes racial and ethnic amicability
and culturally diverse comprehension. It promotes the citizens of a country to not only be a good
citizen, but it allows them to understand better the contributions they can make by being a global
citizen as well. A society can take the best parts of every culture and use it to its' advantage. It is
visible in Canada that people of many different cultures use each other's foods, music, medicine,
games, sports, and products. Our differences are a national resource. Late advances in innovation
have made worldwide correspondences more essential than any time in recent memory. Canadians
who talk numerous dialects and comprehend many societies make it simpler for Canada to take an
interest comprehensively in territories of training, exchange, and discretion. People can learn from
the mistakes other countries made and not repeat them. More than four decades, inconceivably fast
statistic change has changed Canada, particularly its biggest urban communities. In Europe,
comparative change has brought about uproars and social pressures that have discolored the idea of
multiculturalism there. In any case, in Canada, these progressions, regardless of many difficulties,

Multiculturalism" is the existence of a culturally diversified society where people from different
backgrounds and races come and live together. However an insight of this integrated society reveals
that everyone seems to have a different opinion on the issue of how this diverse community should
operate. One of the countries of North America called "the mosaic" is Canada. It has earned this
distinct name because of the mix of races, cultures and ethnicities residing in it. Canada's
geographical features and its harsh climate became a disadvantage to its population growth many
years ago. Compared to its size, the population of Canada was not sufficient a few decades ago.

The government of Canada decided that the country could be a mosaic of cultures where people
from different countries could keep their nationalities and still be called canadian therefore allowing
an influx of different cultures. The royal commission came up with the idea of "cultural pluralism"
and encouraged the government to reflect this in their policies. Pierre Elliot Trudeau, the prime
minster in 1917 accepted this policy called the multiculturalism policy. In 1988, the governement of
Canada also imposed the "Multiculturalism Act" . The factors influencing these two policies/acts
were quite similiar to one another. In mid–1960s, the troubled English–French realtions in Canada
desperately needed a solution. They preferred the idea of a cultural mosaic. After establishing this
policy racism reduced significantly as every ethnic group was to be treated the same way, allowing
canada to be a cultural hub. In the context of theory so far everything seems to be working smoothly
but the real question that we need to ask ourself is whether multiculturalism is working in our
society or not ? Do we feel comfortable living amogst all the different kinds of people and are
content with our lifestyle? Take education for an example. A university in North America called

33. The Changing Immigration Patterns Of Multiculturalism In...
Multiculturalism officially started off in Canada as bilingualism in the 1960's when the Royal
Commision on Bilingualism and Biculturalism was approved. Then in 1971, the federal government
realized that multiculturalism was an essential part of Canadian society. A policy was then adopted
which recognized that many ethno–cultural groups called Canada "home". The policy instilled
values of equality and mutual respect with regards to race, ethnicity, color and religion. It confirmed
Aboriginal Rights and having both French and English as the official languages. The relationship
between the Anglophones and the Francophones of Canada from the 1800's to the present has been a
long and tumultuous one. Since the beginning, the French Canadians, more precisely the French
Quebecois, want(ed) to have special rights and acknowledgement. Immigration patterns have had

which drew many immigrants from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. There has been
much controversy over what national symbols Canada should have. Choosing Canadian flag, for
example, raised quite the commotion. The French felt left out and so did many of the other
ethnicities. A pending question that many have is: "what are the benefits and drawbacks of Canada's

37. Multiculturalism And The Identity Of Canada
Have you ever glanced at a person who appears to be different and immediately averted your gaze to
avoid eye contact? Of course you have, we are all guilty of this. Was this based on the person's race?
The way the dressed perhaps? Or maybe it was neither of these, but yet for some reason you felt as
though you could not trust them. This concept of trust is the motivating factor for this paper. You
will find that there are numerous ways that you interact in situations which require societal trust
without even knowing. It begins at the very top, with our governments and policies, and then
funnels through every network of the public sphere down to the diverse individuals whose identities
are determined by differing levels of trust. Multiculturalism is found at the very centre of this. The
appreciation of others and respect for other cultures is the premise of multiculturalism and is
intended to prevent racial divides and conflict from arising. When executed correctly, it has the
power and ability to allow for trust among one another, which is pivotal for a cohesive and
ethnically diverse society. Our identity is what makes each of us unique. It is not just based on
documents that designate a birth name, but instead personality, individuality, beliefs, and a slew of
other factors that reach far beyond the surface. The same goes for the identity of a country, or even
nations within a state. Think of the identity of Canada, it is difficult to do correct? That is because

Canada is a nation that prides itself on being open and tolerant to racial and ethnic diversity.
According to the Canadian Multiculturalism Act of 1988, the government recognizes that
"multiculturalism is a fundamental characteristic of the Canadian heritage and identity". In a country
where 20% of the population is foreign born, these words are a powerful emblem of national unity;
the official position of the Canadian government is that different races and cultures are an asset to
Canadian society, not a liability. However, the history of Canadian immigration policy and racial
ideology remains preserved in sharp contrast to this modern ideal of acceptance. Differences in race
and culture were perceived as a threat to society, most notably in British Columbia, which was
especially vulnerable to Asian immigration. Anti–Asian sentiment expanded throughout the late 19th
and early 20th century, eventually erupting into a series of violent incidents that would be known as
the Vancouver Race Riots of 1907. These riots are difficult to reconcile with contemporary Canadian
values, and are often understood as a terribly unjust but brief incident that was caused by an isolated
group of racist British Columbians. In reality, the riots were the physical manifestation of decades of
racial prejudice that permeated Canadian society and the federal government. This brief moment
would have powerful and lasting effects on Canadian history as it spurred the government into

Many cultures make up Canada, which proves why diversity has been so important in shaping the
country. Some cultures have many beliefs based on their religion. What you believe as an individual
can change another person or yourself forever. In the text, "Grateful," Jenny gave Murray her
graduation gift, which was a pen, stating she thinks he would be able to use it. He later stopped
searching for a teaching job, "[I] withdrew my resumés from my consideration" and "I opened up

Canadian identities are shaped by the lifestyles learned in their family homes. "Only until Mom gets

49. Canada Is A Multiculturalism Country
We always say Canada is a multiculturalism country. However, what is multiculturalism? A country
that is full of people with different cultural backgrounds and different races living together in peace.
Canada is a multicultural society, so an increasing number of immigrants came to Canada, mostly
from African, Asian, and Caribbean countries. But in Canadian history of multiculturalism has
started with xenophobic approach to immigrants. In the beginning of 20th century, immigrants could
not be recognized as a Canadians in any case, because only white British population had a right to
be treated as Canadians. So I will argue that the multiculturalism status of Canada with
contradictory immigration policies.
I will use the primary source Rainbow War, 1986. This video is a short movie was created by 1986
Vancouver EXPO. It talked a story about three different colors kingdoms. There were red, yellow,
and blue. While each kingdom hates the other for their differences, life is peaceful because there is
no way to travel between kingdoms. This peace is shattered when a young Yellow inventor creates a
flying contraption and crashes into the Red leader 's daughter. What follows is, of course, a war of
colorful paint between the three kingdoms. The Rainbow War has ended, and all kingdoms now live
together, happily ever after. Although this story was not real, we could see our reality through this
story. This primary source Rainbow War is a good example for multiculturalism.

53. Arguments Against Multiculturalism In Canada
Multiculturalism is the co–existence of diverse cultures. In practical terms, I believe
multiculturalism does not truly exist in Canada. We often compare ourselves between Canada and
the United States. We often think immigrants to Canada maintain and celebrate their heritage,
creating a national mosaic, while newcomers to the United States must abandon all cultural baggage
and adapt into the homogenous Americans. This image as Canadians are grossly simplistic. In
addition, government who supported multiculturalism in Canada was a recent phenomenon. Until it
became official in 1971 due to the National policy. Many Canadians, such as the Native and French–

society. As a result, the Department of Immigration sought immigrants ... Show more content on

Immigration remained very selective and restricted before 1945, such as head taxes and official
discouragement, like the Immigration Act of 1967. The Commission argued that a nation of multiple
ethnicities is the basis of the Canadian Identity and should not just promote a single culture. In
response, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau accepted the recommendations and made them official on
October 8th, 1971. Multiculturalism came under intense scrutiny. The arguments against it were the
motivation for multiculturalism was an attempt to grab ethnic vote for the Liberals, that it attempted
to diffuse Quebec separatism, that it was divisive than constructive. Writers such as Neil
Bissoondath, argued that multiculturalism promotes ethnic divisions and encourages racism. On the
other hand, supporters of multiculturalism states that it generates a sense of harmony, promotes

57. What Is Multiculturalism In Canada?
In understanding official multiculturalism in a broader context, it is necessary to first examine it
basic values, and namely, what sort of society is multiculturalism attempting to promote? In this
context, it's useful to examine key clauses of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act; and in particular
the official statement on multiculturalism policy found in section 3.
First, the Act asserts that all Canadians are entitled to "preserve, enhance, and share their cultural
heritage." Central to this notion is the rejection of other common approaches to ethnic and cultural
policies. On the one hand, this tenet rejects earlier Canadian policies of assimilation, where the goal
was to encourage minorities to discard their cultural heritage and adopt mainstream Canadian values
and practices. Under the official policy of multiculturalism, however, citizens are encouraged to
retain their cultural heritage while being recognized as part of Canadian society. Not only does this
policy of multiculturalism reject early practices of assimilation, it also distinguishes itself from the
"melting pot" approach typically found in the United States. Central to this strategy is the idea that
the cultural values and practices of immigrants is best combined with those of mainstream society to
form a new and single national culture. Under multiculturalism, however, ethnic groups in Canadian
society are encouraged to maintain their ethnic distinctiveness, rather than assimilated into an ever–

Section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (the Charter) guarantees that "every
individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal
benefit of the law." However, the government provides significant financial benefits to Aboriginal
Canadians. Many Aboriginal Canadians do not work; rather, they rely on these entitlements to
support themselves. These benefits are designed to compensate for the considerable adversity that
Aboriginal communities have faced. In this essay, I argue that the government should cease to
provide most transfer payments to Aboriginal Canadians so that all Canadians receive equal
protection and benefit from the law as outlined in Section 15 of the Charter. I will further argue that

The presence of these new minority communities left the federal government with the challenge of
acculturating them in to Canadian society. Aboriginal people however have been in this country for
thousands of years. Their presence even predates the arrival of European colonists. This long–
standing presence in Canada is often cited as justification for many benefits that they receive. Public
policy regarding the treatment of Aboriginal people is older than multiculturalism. However, based
on the way that society has progressed since the establishment of this policy in the 1970s; putting
aside the financial benefits, Aboriginal people no longer require the additional protection that they
are afforded. In our current multicultural society, nobody would deny any Aboriginal person the
right of religious freedom or cultural distinctiveness. This may have been a bonafide concern in the
past, but it is no longer a problem today. Aboriginal Canadians want to protect their culture and

Born in Montreal on October 18, 1919, Pierre Trudeau was the 15th Prime Minister of Canada for
nearly 16 years. As one of Canada's greatest Prime Ministers, he provided for Canada, resulting in
great strides for the country. He promoted diversity, established Canadian rights and freedoms, and
unified the nation we are now proud to call our home.
One of Trudeau's most important policies was to enforce multiculturalism, and to make it a part of
Canadian identity. In a statement to the House of Commons on October 1, 1971, he announced
multiculturalism as an official government policy as the Canadian Multiculturalism Act. This Act
ensures that everyone can "recognize and promote the understanding that multiculturalism reflects
the cultural and racial diversity of Canadian society and acknowledges the freedom of all members
of Canadian society to preserve, enhance and share their cultural heritage" (Canadian
Multiculturalism Act). Without this, we would not have the Canada we know today, the one where

shaped in Canadian society because of its co–existence of different cultures. Indeed,
multiculturalism has been a keystone of Canadian policy for over 40 years with the aim of pursuing
Canadian unity (Flegel 2002). Accordingly, Canada is generally estimated a country where people
are all equal and where they can share fundamental values based upon freedom. Diversity is
sustained and promoted by governmental policy, however, there are still racist interactions, which
are destructive to minorities integration, especially recent ethnic groups' arrival (Banting &
Kymlicka 2010). This paper will examine challenges that multiculturalism has brought society and
residents of Canada. There is a growing of ethnic groups from non–European societies, who can
meet Canadian economic development in term of their level of education, occupational skills and
languages. Those ethnic groups are called immigrants because they are neither indigenous nor
colonist settlers but are accepted through Canada's immigration policy (Banting 2010). Even though
diverse cultures and differences of minorities were recognized and celebrated within the bilingual
framework during the multiculturalism policy of the 1970s, their full equal participations are still
excluded from the mainstream society (Leung 2012).

Multiculturalism Definition:
"Multiculturalism" is the co–existence of diverse cultures, where culture includes racial, religious, or
cultural groups and is manifested in customary behaviors, cultural assumptions and values, patterns
of thinking, and communicative styles". Multiculturalism in Canada is a huge topic for many
reasons most people that live in Canada come from different races such as Caucasian, Hispanic,
African America, Asian, and Hindu. Almost all of these races immigrated from countries all across
the world to either start a better life here, free education welfare, pension, unemployment insurance,
also free health care. Usually Canada takes in 200,000 immigrants each year. "In 1971, Canada was

Which is wrong g because as such multicultural countries every race, skin color should not be

highly controversial and debated issue". Aboriginals, French, and British people from other
countries began to immigrate to Canada in 1867 when the large confederation started and a big
group of a German population arrived in Canada. In the late 1800's and early 1900's the Canadian

85. The Importance Of Multiculturalism In Canada
Canada is known globally for its multiculturalism and loves to boast about it, we even have a day
dedicated to it. On Canada's Multiculturalism Day in 2017 Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that
"multiculturalism is at the heart of Canada's heritage and identity – and as Canadians, we recognize
that our differences make us strong" (Trudeau). In grade school Canadians are taught about the
supposed marvels of multiculturalism and, in Alberta, an entire year of social studies is dedicated to
it in middle school. Of course, as the creator of their policies, the Canadian government would have
mostly good things to say and teach about its take on multiculturalism but, is it really all it's cracked
up to be? In thinking about Canadian multiculturalism, has it been the success that our government
has led us to believe it is? The purpose of this paper is to argue that Canada's multicultural policies
and practices have not been a success and, in fact, solidify, entrench, and reproduce social
inequalities. To build a case in favour of this argument, this paper will look at what multiculturalism
means to Canada and how we should evaluate it in order to show that it has not been an unequivocal
success.
The idea of multiculturalism has come to refer to both a particularly diverse society and the policies
enacted to manage it. Canadian demographics changed as a result of evolving immigration policies
and patterns, which then created a demand for more policies and symbols that reflected

Multiculturalism is the act of giving equivalent consideration regarding various foundations in a

two or more diverse societies or through migration from various locales around the globe.
Multiculturalism that seeks in keeping up the peculiarity of numerous societies is regularly
differentiated to other settlement arrangements, for example, social mix, social osmosis, and racial
isolation. Multiculturalism has been depicted as a "salad bowl" and "cultural mosaic" (Burgess, et al.
2005). In spite of the way that multiculturalism has predominantly been utilized as a term to
characterize distraught gatherings, numerous scholars tend to center their contentions on outsiders
who are ethnic and religious minorities, minority countries, and indigenous people groups. The term
multiculturalism is frequently utilized as a part of a reference to Western country states, which ...

93. Pros And Cons Of Multiculturalism In Canada
There have been more articles and books written on cultural diversity than most any other subject
matter that effects modern societies in the western world, while some are pro diversity, there are
many that are not, and while many in the government and most of Canada's intellectuals tout
Canada's cultural and ethnic diversity as the reason for Canada's great success and remarkable
prosperity in this modern age. There are those who will strongly disagree with this opinion and
viewpoint and believe that more time is needed to properly evaluate its outcome. Canada is ranked
as the most multicultural society in the world, and a lot of Canada's success and development has
been attributed to migrants coming into Canada and becoming very successful settlers. This has
rightly or wrongly, been attributed to multiculturalism and while multiculturalism can have many
advantages and can contribute to national success, it does have just as many disadvantages and can
lead to events with less than desirable consequences. Leading opinion is that multiculturalism has
had a positive outcome on Canada due to Canada now being a country that is so diverse and rich in
cultural diversity, that there are now vast amounts of ideas, opinions and lifestyles to explore all
within one national identity, even though putting so many races and a varying of cultures together,
all of which have vastly opposing value differences, have also lead to acts of discrimination, racism

The multicultural melting pot, as Canada has so avidly been called may not be as melded together as
the leaders would like us to believe. Even though the Canadian government is actively pursuing
multicultural acceptance, racist ideologies still prevail amongst the general population. The strained
relationship with First Nations peoples is beginning to be redeemed through the Truth and
Reconciliation Commission and there have been bills passed through the federal government that
are attempting to abolish racism issues such as "islamophobia" and other fearful attitudes; however,
commissions and bills only prove that the government is concerned about these issues and wants to
do something, yet, does nothing to change the prevailing attitudes or shift the cultural norms of
racism and fear. The broth of the pot is attempting to dissolve every other ingredient and turn it into
broth but neglecting to acknowledge that the variance in flavour is what makes soup great. //First,
the issue of racism has existed in Canada long before it became as ethnically diverse as it is today.
Racism began with colonialism and white settlers believing that they were better than the indigenous
peoples. The racism that First Nations people face is deeper rooted than that of any immigrant
(however, Muslims and Middle Eastern immigrants are beginning to face increasing levels of racism
and prejudice). Further, the multiculturalism policies instituted by Canadian government is geared
towards the acceptance of immigrants and all cultures and ethnicities, yet as a country we cannot
respect those who were here before the "Canadians." Thus, the multicultural policies geared towards
immigration does not deal with the fundamentally institutional racism against one of the most
marginalized people groups in Canadian society – First Nations peoples. Moreover, Canada's
multicultural policies "purposefully ignores the structural contexts in which the Canadian society,
economy, and polity have developed historically and operate currently. It has adopted a diversity
discourse that portrays Canada as a horizontal – not as a vertical – socio–economic and political
space." (Satzewich, 2017, p. 158–9). These policies keep the power with the powerful by

Both influences political ideology and its decisions. Genetically people are very different, not just
by appearance but also through behavior and personality. MZ twins and DZ twins both are twins but
have different characteristics. MZ twins are identical twins that carry 100% genetic similarity as
they split from one egg and one sperm. And DZ twins are non–identical twins as they are split from
two eggs and two sperms. They are more likely siblings e.g. 50% genetic. MZ twins are more likely
to share similar environment and do interact more in life than DZ twins. As whether parents agree or

In 1971, Canada became the first country in the world to create an official policy of
multiculturalism. The Multiculturalism Policy of Canada, as it was known at the time, affirmed the
equality of all Canadians regardless of their ethnic background, culture, religion, or language.
Moreover, it recognized the value of combining cultures to create a unique Canadian identity.
Cultural expression was encouraged, with multicultural activities such as festivals and heritage
classes taking place across the nation. This policy achieved its goal of preventing racism by
overriding a history of assimilation and instead encouraging Canadians to celebrate their unique
heritage.
This event deserves the rating of +2 because it introduced a period of prosperity for Canada, as
encouraged an atmosphere of acceptance within Canada. This event also caused profound,

117. Multiculturalism : The New Reality Of Canada
"Multiculturalism exists when people accept and encourage many cultures to thrive in a society.
Multiculturalism can lead to many great outcomes, including racial and ethnic harmony, which
simply means that people from different backgrounds get along well together. Living with and
accepting different cultures helps us understand each other and discourage hatred and violence." ()
Furthermore, various ethnic groups introduce their individual beliefs, traditions, as well as, religions
to the Canadian society. Generally speaking, be part of an expanding multicultural society has
impacted Canada economically, demographically and socially. Thus, the presence of the variety of
different cultures, languages and heritages, results in the need for the county to adapt and change,
based on the new reality of Canada. With Canada's demographic constantly increasing, significant
changes are bound to occur within the economy. In particular, marketers will need to comprehend
the changing Canadian identity, resulting in the need for the economy to adapt to the new reality of
Canada. Thus, there is a need for marketers to change their marketing methods, when approaching
the cultural differences. "Children are learning about different cultures at a young age, and as

that the definition of who is Canadian–or what it means to be Canadian–is changing." (Daniels 13

A country built on immigration, Canada has long had a reputation of being culturally and ethnically
diverse. While multiculturalism is meant to be built on equality and appreciation of different
cultures, its concept has gained both support and opposition. On one hand, it allows for more
assortment and the voices of minorities have a higher chance to be heard. On the other hand, loss of
unity and conflicts may occur due to contrasting worldviews of the citizens. All in all,
multiculturalism is a controversial policy that has both advantages and disadvantages, but has
proven to be a successful strategy in Canada.

Negative aspects of multiculturalism are also in effect, such as incoherence within a nation, loss of
national identity, and conflicts among different ethnic groups. First of all, while differences are
highlighted and encouraged, they are also a cause of disjointedness among the different ethnic
groups in a country because they fail to function as one nation, instead forming small communities.
This often causes a lack of communication between such ethnic groups and leads to a loss of unity
in a country. Furthermore, immigration and pluralism often lead to a diminishment or complete
disappearance of national identity in a multicultural country. An example of this is Canada because
it was created on the basis of immigration without having its own distinct culture from the
beginning, but choosing to include different cultures instead to become what is known today as a
multicultural society. While generally it is seen in a positive light, it often raises concern that the
country's identity may disappear altogether in the future. Finally, intense pluralism is oftentimes a
reason for riots and conflicts, indirectly related to immigrants or ethnicity. For example, in France
tension among ethnic groups and riots have happened in the past because of the conditions of the
communities where the original immigrants settled in, combining high unemployment rates and
discrimination. ("France Riots") Sweden

Living in multicultural societies, even cosmopolitan areas may implant a concern among individuals

happens to children who are from different backgrounds and have their own uniques which can not
be merged into the others. Many multicultural education practices focus on teaching the values of
variant cultures without providing an education within the culture of a child. The opponents believe
that children should firstly know about themselves before learning other ethnicities. This point
seems logical on the surface. However, the issue of losing identities never happen in a rich diverse
