In the memoir, A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, and the film The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and
Pete, there is a lot to do with poverty, loss of family and independence. Only in different ways.
Ishmael is on his own and has to find his own food, water and shelter along with a few friends. The
boys are all young but were thrown into the real world very quickly and unexpectedly. Mister and Pete
have their mothers, but it does not matter as of the mothers do not seem to care for their children as
much as they should. Mister and Pete come home to rarely any food at all, no money and are scared of
one day, no shelter. Mister has to take charge in his home as a result of his mother being a drug addict
and does not try to help, just like Ishmael had to be his own person by reason of the believed loss of
his family. In the film, police came to search the apartment. Mister and Pete hid as they do not want to
depart to Riverview, the children s home. Every day, the two boys are avoiding the police or running
from them. They must buy their own food, take care of their home and one another. Mister steps up
and tries his best to provide and care for Pete, although being thirteen years of age, he cannot yet
acquire a job. In the memoir, Ishmael and his friends are driven to do everything they can to avoid the
rebels or they could be in danger, possibly killed. They end up only going out at night so that they will

Race, Culture, Income Level, Education, And Class
In every society there is stratification, which is basically a ranking system constructed upon features
involving gender, race, culture, income level, education, and class. Each of these factors fall under the
status of either Ascribed or Achieved. Ascribed status is something that people are born with and is
centered on characteristics that a person can t control like gender, race, and culture. Achieved status is
earned or chosen and is based on characteristics that a person can control such as income level,
education, and class. When looking at Ascribed stratification, the characteristic that appears to have
the greatest effect on a person s status is race. When someone thinks of a wealthy, high class
American, an African American is not typically what pops into their head. This is because African
Americans are a minority, making up around 13% of America s population. African Americans are
also seen at a lesser status because of stereotypes. Labels like criminal, poor, and unintelligent are put
on African Americans which automatically downgrades them. On the other hand, an example of an
ascribed stratification that would automatically put someone at the top of the totem pole in a society
would be being born into royalty or a wealthy family because people do not pick and control the

Over time, language changes over time. It can get shorter and the use of slang will get more popular.
Slang is used to make a sentence more understandable or to shorten a phrase. There are many
advantages to using nonstandard language when speaking and writing, but there are also many
disadvantages. Using nonstandard language can also change on how effective your communication
with someone can be. One of the advantages are that you can communicate with someone more easily.
But the bad part is other people who are fluent in the language will think you aren t very smart.

The Real Henry V Through the play Henry V, by William Shakespeare, Henry is portrayed as a King
who is well organized, and in complete control of his command. In the end of the play a different
personality of King Henry is exposed. Catherine s King Henry is vulnerable, and almost begging
Catherine to be his wife. This Henry that is trying to woo Catherine doesn t seem like the real Henry,
he seems vulnerable, and self conscious. When examining Henry throughout the play he is in control,

Stem cell research is the study and use of embryonic and adult cells towards development of medical
science. The study of stem cells has become a major focus in the world of medicine because of its
great potential to cure common illnesses such as; Parkinson s disease, cerebral palsy and diabetes. The
study of maturing stem cells gives scientists insight into possible cures for these diseases and
potentially can give information on how they occur.
History and development of stem cell research
Stem cell research was first developed in the mid 1800 s when scientists discovered the cells ability to
produce other cells. The first medical attempt to use harvested cells was in the early 1900 s when
scientists tried to fertilized eggs outside the human body. The first successful attempt to use stem cells
from bone marrow was in 1968 which was an allogeneic transplant between two siblings. Since then
stem cell research has developed as the medical world gains new understanding of the cells potential.
The use of adult stem cells in modern world medicine such as leukemia and heart disease shows the
progress the scientific world has made.

commonly occur on the face, behind the ears, on stomach chest and back and on the arms and legs.
