2. Storyboaring
101
• The sole purpose of a story
board is to convey a message
– but how that is done can be
vastly different
• Effective storyboards can
convey a message with three
key pieces
• Panels (illustrating a single shot)
• Arrows (animating a larger
scene)
• Notes (adding the necessary
details)
3. Storyboaring
101
• Panels
• Represents what the camera will
see
• Everything from a simple
thumbnail, a detailed illustration
or an elaborate animation can
be used to convey your scene
• Always differentiate your panels
by the scene name or number
and the shot type
4. Storyboaring
101
• Arrows
• Used to represent movement in
a motionless format (such as an
illustration)
• Typically, arrows within a panel
show character movement while
arrows outside of the panel
show camera movement (pan,
zoom, etc.)
5. Storyboaring
101
• Notes
• Provide any other pertinent
information not covered by the
illustration or arrows
• Can include script notations,
equipment settings (such as
white balance or color space
information), and etc.
