Reflection Paper On Thanksgiving
Every Year exactly one week before thanksgiving my entire family comes over for dinner at our
house. We all sit down and eat thanksgiving food while we talk about our plans for the rest of the
year. Most of my family look alike, they all have brown hair and brown eyes. My brother,
Brandon, and I were an exception, we have green eyes and long dark brown hair, I never thought
about it too much, my mom always told us that we were special. As we enjoyed our dinner and
laughed lightning struck and the power went out. Everyone stay calm, my mom said in the room of
complete silence. There was a gleaming lightunder the table, I reached out to touch it, do to my
curiosity. As my hand approached the light the power came back on.
I was staring at the exact place where the light appeared when my aunt called after my dad,
Mike! Mike! Where are you!, everyone in the room began to panick. My mom didn t seem
worried that my dad was miraculously missing. Dinner is over everyone! Not to worry Mike is
upstairs right now enjoying a nap, it was great seeing you all have a nice night, Everyone calmed
down to the sound of my mom s soothing voice. Everyone began to get up and leave one by one.
My mom closed the door behind everyone and turned around, her face quickly transformed to the
way everyone reacted when they though my dad was missing. What s wrong mom, is everything

Situation comedies, or sitcoms for short, first began between 1946 and 1947 in the United
Kingdom when broadcast station BBC aired Pinwright s Progress (Aaron,2014). The United States
soon followed airing their first sitcom in 1950. William Asher has been credited with being the
man who invented the sitcom, having directed over two dozen of the leading sitcoms from the
1950s through the 1970s (Cook, 1999). Some of Asher s finest works include Bewitchedand I Love
Lucy , classics that are still around today. Although situation comedies have been able to withstand
time, even with new evolving technology that allows a high focus on effects that have allowed
science fiction shows to thrive, they are far from where they began from William Asher s time.
Television has always portrayed the culture of the time and in the 1950s a very domestic picture
was painted. Family, marriage, and an obedient housewife were all a common factor in sitcoms
during this time. Contrary to popular belief, sitcoms in the 1950s rarely portrayed men as loving,
doting, patriarchs, but rather as distant providers of the family with stick and stern rules for both

Summary
The topic for today s reading was Teaching Listener Skills and Echoics. The first assigned reading,
Teaching Receptive Language Skills and Other Nonverbal Operants, presented how Skinner
describes receptive language as listener skills and doesn t focus at all on developing imitation and
matching skills since he doesn t consider them verbal behavior. However, this does not mean they
are not important. In current verbal behavior (VB) programs, teaching children to respond to these
nonverbal operants is important and occurs early in the programming. The beauty of the receptive
skills is that they do not require a child to speak and many children find them easy to comply with.
Teaching these skills can often turn the tide away from non compliance and frustration to learning.
In addition, Dr. Mark Sundberg has replaced the term receptive skills with the term listener skills.
In the same way that he thought the word expressive was too vague to describe manding, tacting,
intraverbals, and echoic, he believed that developing listener skills was a better way to describe
the process of assessing and developing this skill. Receptive language or listener skills include
being able to respond to another person s direction. Even before a typical child can speak, he will

jurisdiction of New France, the Acadians governed separately than the rest of the country and were

Although the population of Port Royal grew slowly at first, the French settlers lived well, farming

became desirable to the growing British empire. Despite the failing fort, the British settlers became
interested in Port Royal and realized the potential of the marshland. Farming was the main, but not
only, occupation of the Acadians. These people successfully grew a diverse diet including root
vegetables, grains, fruit, and other vegetables, as well as raising pigs, cattle, and sheep. This aided
in flourishment of the Acadian people but also turned the settlement into a potential conquest for
the English Colonies.
