innocent consumers. If we as the consumer only see the problem as the producers (i.e. big
corporations) then we will not change our own behaviors and nothing will actually be solved.
This is what Berry was trying to get these graduates to understand. Continuing on the topic of
problems remaining unsolved, Berry mentions the reality of how people solve their problems.
And the reality of it is, people don t solve their problems. He points out the fact that a lot of
people do talk about their problems, and even talk about solving them. But that is all they do.
Berry words it as follows, though we have been talking about most of our problems for decades,
we are still mainly talking about them. This I agree with. People always talk about how they will
do something or change something, but when it actually comes down to it they do nothing about it.

At this point we are able to see the state of mind Marlowe was in. He seems to separate himself
from the darkness. He sees himself as exempt from possessing darkness. This of course was just
at the beginning of his journey. The author s use of words colossal, black, and creeping create a

adults because the action is believed to be intentional. Teenage repeat offenders should not suffer
the same consequences as adults because most of them are victims by situation, and they need time

The story To Build a Fire written by Jack London has two nearly identical versions published in
1902 and 1908 respectively. The latter is better known and more thought provoking because of
the protagonist s death. To begin with, the journey takes place on a cold winter day in Klondike,
consists of a man and his dog. The man is ignorant of the extreme coldness and feels confident
about travelling alone at fifty degrees below zero. However, he breaks through a thin skin of ice
unexpectedly and wets himself halfway to the knees. In order to dry his feet, the man builds a
fire, only to have it extinguished by a pile of snow unloaded from a tree. He tries to set up another
fire, yet all attempts has failed. The man panics and strives to unfreeze his body by running. Not
surprisingly, his efforts are useless, and the man dies of hypothermiaat last. The author effectively
supports the central conflict of man versus nature and gives hints about the man s death as
resolution by using appropriate title, descriptive setting, and a large amount of foreshadowing.

The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic of friendship, death, and immorality. Gilgamesh was arrogant and
selfish, who abused his power as a ruler. The friendship between Enkidu and Gilgamesh changed
the mindset of Gilgamesh and the way he treated people for the better. Gilgamesh met his perfect
match when Enkidu came along, Enkidu was half man half beast, but looked and was strong like
Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh began to change his personality when he realized he isn t the only strong
warrior anymore. Enkidu is the hero in this epic poem because he helped Gilgamesh to alter his
cruel ways as a leader. Enkidu and Gilgamesh are the epitome of the saying, opposites attract.

am the strongest here (The Epic of Gilgamesh, 122). Enkidu initiated the rivalry, but when he
faced Gilgamesh, he lost the battle. The Gods created Enkidu to challenge Gilgamesh to change
his presumptuous ways as leader. The epic poem states, When Enkidu was thrown he said to
Gilgamesh, There is no not another like you in the world. Ninsun, who is as strong as a wild ox
in the byre, she was the mother who bore you ... So Enkidu and Gilgamesh embraced and their
friendship was sealed (The Epic of Gilgamesh, 123). The fight allowed Gilgamesh to embrace
Enkidu as a warrior, thus, allowing them to become friends. They went on many adventures
together, Enkidu gave Gilgamesh advice on their journey but always stayed with Gilgamesh, even

Birds represent God s presence unless they are interfered with people. Leif Enger strategically
created hidden places for the references of birds into his story that become a scavenger hunt for
the reader. The Lands encounter a lot of positive and negative occasions with birds. Though God
guides them along this journey to find Jeremiah s son, Davy, God finds ways to show his
presence through others. In this book, God appears through many symbols of birds. His presence
appears through people or in new places. But, when birds are interfered with people, their positive

This seemed as though it were a sign from God. So far, Leif Enger has used Birds in his story as

North Dakota. As they were driving on an open road with no other approaching cars, Swede
noticed something black, flapping in the middle of the road up ahead. They later realize it is a
dead crow. This however was not common what so ever to see a crow in North Dakota. They
thought nothing of it and proceeded on their journey. As they kept driving, there was yet another
crow found dead in the middle of the road. Jeremiah later goes on to say, I was just thinking, all
the years I spent in North Dakota, that s the first crow I ever saw hit on the road. (page 134)
