The Louisiana Purchase Shaping America
The Louisiana Purchase shaping America

Abstract
The Louisiana Purchase was a major event in the growth of the United States of America.
Purchased from France for 15 million by Thomas Jefferson in 1803, it gave America twice the
available land, adding 827,000 square miles. Some may argue the Louisiana Purchase is
unconstitutional, but Jefferson found a way around that. The Constitution says land may be
acquired through treaties such as the Louisiana Purchase. After the accusation of the Louisiana
Territory, Jefferson had an expedition lead by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. The goal of
the expedition was to map the new territory and find a quicker path to the Pacific Ocean. The
entire expedition lasted a little longer than two years to complete. The Louisiana Purchase was a
deal between The United States and France over 827,000 square miles west of the Mississippi River
. (Wilson, G. 2003) It allowed for major expansion and growth for the small republic in 1803.
What if France would have denied our efforts to acquire the land, would The Unites States be the
same as it is today? Through my research I believe that without the acquisition of the Louisiana
Territory, The United States would not have been able to grow and become what it is today.
Considered to be one of, if not the greatest real estate purchase in American history, the

Latin Is A Waste Of Time
Historically, Latin was often used by the Romans. Although, Latin is considered a dead language,
it can often assist careers because it s the language of law, government, logic, theology, sciences,
and more. I think TCMS should add Latin as another elective because most of our vocabulary
comes from Latin, it boosts SAT scores, and aid in the study of foreign languages.
Many argue that studying Latin is a waste of time. However, most of the English language is derived
from Latin. Statistics show that 80% of our English vocabulary is extracted from the Latin.
Imagine a young student learned the English word, father. As the child begins to progress in
school, they ll encounter challenging, abstract words with 3 5 syllables that could possibly come
from the Latin word for father: pater and patris. When they meet words such as patronize,
paternalism, and expatriate, will the young student be able to define the word? Instead of looking
through the dictionary, studying Latin is another option in which one can define a word easily and
master English vocabulary. Not only will studying Latin teach you the roots words, it can also help
students ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Richard La Fleur, a progression from the University of Georgia, learning Latin will
definitely have a positive impact on SAT scores. Students who take Latin have a better chance of
outperforming non Latin students on the verbal section because Latin root words improve the
ability to infer the meaning of words derived from those roots. On a standardized test, a student s
verbal, analytic, and problem solving scores all increased after studying Latin. The study of Latin
will improve one s cognitive skills because it shapes the mind for other areas such as math.
Therefore, Latin will help master the vocabulary section and on math and logic questions and boost

Coffee in World History
Coffee in World History
Coffee in world history has changed many things from its first appearance in 1635 up until today.
Its effects were seen in the people, on the economy, and on the social aspect of life. These effects
were mainly beneficial with some exceptions. Documents 1,3,5,7,8, and 10 show positive social
effects on the people. While documents 1,3,4, and 9 show how the effects of coffeewere seen
positively on a worldwide scale. Whether looking close up in social communities, or looking at it
as a global impact, coffee proved to have a very large and beneficial influence on how people lived
their lives throughout history. Socially, coffee has changed history in very positive ways. In the

Other than the problem of some people avoiding jobs in exchange for time spent drinking
coffee, its impact was mainly positive. This document could also be biast because of if the
people in that particular place actually have time and money for coffee, or if they enjoy their
jobs, they wouldn t be flocking to this tiny shop to socialize and to drink. If another document
were to be added to this picket, it would need to be a document written by people in different
jobs such as a priest, a coffee shop owner, a merchant, or a trader of coffee. The point of this
document would be to better understand coffee s effect on different jobs and really determine if
the effect on the job changed the job holder s take on coffee. This document would help really
tell if the effects on the social aspect were beneficial according to the people, not just the
overseers. From the beginning of when coffee first appeared, until now, there has been many
coffee influences on history. Through society, coffee has changed the way we live, and how
coffee has changed our jobs. In worldlier views, coffee has changed our economy, trade, and
relationships with other countries. Coffee proved to have a very large and beneficial influence on

Stereotypes In The Military
It is clear that in today s society there is still a growing controversy surrounding equality between
gender, specifically women in the military. Jobs for women in the military were not common in the
late 20th century, with only 67% of military positions open to women. In 2014, those percentages
increased dramatically, with about 95% militarypositions open to women. The idea of women
being exposed to violence was a concern to the public. The media have often shown violence
against women, particularly rape and abuse, making women appear to be victims. It is not that the
general public is shocked about women wanting to fight in the front lines, people feel strained
about women having qualities of aggressiveness. Women are also seen as physically... Show more

As of 2012, women make up 14% of the U.S. military. More than 165,000 women are enlisted
and active in the armed services with over 35,000 additional women serving as officers. (Wood) It
s been 13 years since the United States went to war in Iraq and Afghanistan and there have been
more than 200,000 women who had actively served in the wars. Although there are no laws barring
women from combat, keeping female service members away from the front lines have always
been a military policy. Since the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, many women have served
courageously and skillfully under fire, a reality that female service members have long been
pressing the military to acknowledge. The decision to lift the ban on women in the battlefield will
open up hundreds of thousands of jobs that were previously meant for only males. Women would
then be permanently assigned to battalions. In these ground units, women would be assigned to
such critical jobs as radio operators, medics, and tank mechanics. However, the opening of all
combat positions will not be immediate but will process through an assessment phase. Supporters
of lifting of the ban believes that opening up the army to women on an entirely equal basis would
actually improve the army s culture and lessen such

Legalization Of Same Sex Marriage
Gabi Smith

English 4
Mr. Pakula
Legalization of Same Sex Marriage Everyone has the right to be with the person they love.
Nobody, not even the government, should be able to take that kind of happiness and freedom
away from someone. If a girl loves another girl or a guy loves another guy, it should not matter to
anyone else as long as they are happy together. We are all equals in the world whether we are
Black, White, Hispanic, Indian, or any other race for that matter. Why should we not be equals
based on sexuality orientation (Gay Marriage Pros and Cons)? Everyone deserves to have the
same equal rights. Everyone has different beliefs and nothing can or will change that. Some people
believe in same sex marriage and some people do not, but there is still no reason to dislike or
judge people that believe in something someone else does not believe in. Not everyone in the
world has the same beliefs. That is life, it happens. So what is the point of being so against this
one belief? Same sex couples do not walk around bashing on straight people for the person they
love, so why can t all straight couples do the same thing and not bash on same sex couples?
Not only is this situation against some people s beliefs, but it also is against the constitution. The
first amendment of the constitution states that a person s religious beliefs or lack of thereof must
be protected. Legislatures also cannot discriminate against marriages of the minority party which

The Pros And Cons Of Freedom Of Speech
Freedom of speech has central place in democratic societies. In the United States the First
Amendment protects free speech as essential right of its citizens. Other democracies, such as
those in western Europe also have free speech traditions, though none as extensive as the United
States . But why should speech be free? Speech should be free because it provides for a good
government, promotes the realization of truth, allows diversity to thrive, and is a
straightforward legislative approach to speech. Free speech allows the people to hold their
government accountable via the free press. A condition of a good government is freedom of
information, and what has been called the right to know (Garton Ash 78), which is the
responsibility of a free press to provide to the people, especially when the government is not
being transparent on its own. Without a press that is free to report on public officials and the
government s activity, both are able to go unchecked, at the expense of the people they are
supposed to serve. In addition to this, freedom to expose public figures activities must be protected
from frivolous accusations of libel because the ability to have a journalist accused of libel for
revealing the truth would [threaten] the informing purpose of the First Amendment (Lewis 51). The
United Statesembraced this idea when the Supreme Court case New York Times v. Sullivan
(1964) decision the court changed the standards that constitute libel to the statement must be
false, as well as published both knowingly and recklessly. This shifted the burden of proof from
the accused to the accuser. Not only does the press need to be free to report on the activity of the
government, but the people must be free to express their wants and needs to their government.
A fair and legitimate democracy requires that all people have a vote as well as an opportunity to
have their views heard. Garton Ash uses the words of Ronald Dworkin to explain this, a
majority decision is not fair unless everyone has had the opportunity to express his or her
attitudes or opinions or fears or tastes or presuppositions or prejudices or ideals (Garton Ash 77).
Free speech allows for political views to be expressed, so that the desires

Analysis Of The Plastic Pink Flamingo
In sprawling suburbs across America, lies the remnants of a different era. In those few houses left
relatively untouched and never remodeled, one can see the markings of the 1950s, an era of
kitchens and bathrooms decorated in a monochrome of Hot Pink, just like the plastic pink lawn
flamingos. In her essay, Jenniffer Price discusses the history of the flamingos in the United States
and uses them as a symbol of America s culture. Through her use of diction and imagery in the
essay The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History , Jennifer Price characterizes American Culture
as materialistic.
Jennifer Price uses diction to characterize American Culture as materialistic and thoughtless in her
first and second paragraphs. To add color to her first paragraph, Price uses a variety of words
including splashed , boldness , flocking , pizzaz and playful . This word choice characterizes the
flamingos, and through comparison, American society as valuing glamour and consequently,
wealth. In describing the new plastic flamingos Price even goes as far as to describe flamingos as
synonymous with wealth , and the middle class as eager to enjoy the flamingo culture, associated
with wealth. She aids her characterization by calling the flamingos souvenirs , pointless chotskies
that a person brings home to show off and display their wealth. She contrasts this with the irony that
flamingos in America had already gone extinct by the nineteenth century. While describing this
extinction,

Should Sports Be Allowed In The High School Curriculum
Should athletics be accepted in the High School Curriculum? Many people assume that athletics
in education are a blessing and not a necessary evil. Athletics keep truancy issues low and school
spirits high, but come at a cost of the disappointing the athlete and could quite possibly scar him
or her for the rest of their lives. In discussions of school sports, one controversial issue has always
been if sports are truly good for the student. On the one hand, those for athletics argue that basic
social skills and discipline are taught and enforced. On the other hand, however, an athlete must
sacrifice learning and study to participate in his or her sport. Other students who do not participate
in any athletic event maintain a steady average and learn with limited interruptions. My own view

Athletics can be viewed as a blessing or a curse depending on where one is and where one comes
from. These men represent the dreams of many children and more often their parents. (Rising

could never do. Sports has its pros and cons like any other controversial topic , but this does not
mean that it be judged on facts alone. Consequently, this argument essay took a turn for the more
depressing. Touching on subjects like death rate and inevitable recession of intellect over
generations, however, students will still enjoy a good pickup game of their sport of choice and
their parents will still be cheering on the sidelines. I learned an important lesson writing this
paper that I feel will shape my life forever. It does not really matter who is right, as long as the

Cases may be brought in the first instance before a lay magistrate (justice of the peace), a

amount of property involved. The Supreme Court also has appellate jurisdiction. Final appeal
rests with the seven member Court of Appeals, appointed on the advice of the prime minister in

To Kill A Mockingbird Character Analysis
Atticus when they finally saw him...He was real nice
Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them. (a life in Maycomb) To Kill a Mockingbird is
a story about shells distinctions of a person based on character, actions, circumstances, or race that
society uses to define him. A few characters in this novel, though, can see through these shells, into
the person beneath. Unfortunately, the rest of the world is quite different... Harper Lee wrote To
Kill a Mockingbird in the 1950s, a time of excessive prejudice and contempt in her home state of
Alabama. Through carving out her own childhood and the world around her, Lee wrote a novel
widely known as the 20th century s greatest work of literature.

you had been on that jury, son, and eleven other boys like you, Tom would be a free man. We do
see the outcome that happens when shells are ignored. At night, a group of rough woodmen
approach Atticus, ready to exert force on his defendant. Scout suddenly interjects the group, and
begins talking with a big gruff man, Mr. Cunningham of his work, and his son, Walter. The
gruffness of the group is immediately broken; all the men are shocked. Scout recalls, The men were
all looking at me, some had their mouths half open...Their attention amounted to fascination. A few
moments later, Mr. Cunningham bends down and says to Scout, I ll tell [Walter] you said hey,
little lady. The group is then dispersed, a brute, cold natured bunch shown to be calm, rational men.
Later on, we learn that this incident positively effects Tom Robinson s case. But this natural

him, So far, nothing in life has interfered with your reasoning process...There s something in our
world that makes men lose their heads. So, what is this thing that pushes men to turn into
judgmental beings? We learn that it is a conflict between our natural idea of what men should do
and their actual actions. Jem asks Scout If there s just one kind of folks, why can t they

Virgin In A Tree
This poem was written in 1958, after Sylvia Plath left her job at Smith College to write for a
living. It was during this time she found writing extremely difficult and resorted to set themes
and deliberate exercises in style, in her efforts to find a release. The poem is based on a drawing
quot; The Virgin in a Tree quot; by Paul Klee. Sylvia Plath expresses her feelings about the concept
of virginity, virgins etc. She holds their morals and values accountable, for what they believe to be
right and what they believe to be wrong.
Sylvia Plath uses great many mythical allusions to illustrate her perceptions about virgins,
especially in Ancient Greek mythology, many of which have been a direct bearing on the title of
the poem; Virgin in a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Unfaced, unformed, the nipple flowers
Shrouded to suckle darkness?
Part of this, she believes, is in the belief of others that virginity is a sign of purity and holiness; for
it is only them that talk tediously in the praise of; virgins for virginity s sake.
This is also a significant image in her poem, the religious images that are supposedly to symbolize
holiness and purity are employed by Plath as a means of mockery;
And put on barks nun black habit which deflects
Who keep cool and holy make
A sanctum to attract
Green virgins, consecrating limb and lip
To chastity s service: like prophets, like preachers,
In Plath s point of view, the reason virginity is given the meaning it is today, is due to the fact
that virginity is declared sacred and pledged to sexual abstinence in the name of all that is holy.
This underlines her faith in a woman s role as a partner in marriage, as a wife, mother, daughter
especially in a family. She thinks that virginity does not deserve the fame and glory it has, in fact
it will ultimately lead to the spoil of a woman s soul, how the essence will be destroyed if they are
kept prisoners and constricted.
She, ripe and unplucked, s
Lain splayed too long in the tortuous boughs: overripe
Now, dour faced,
Askew, she ll ache and wake
Though doomsday bud. Neglect s
Given her lips that lemon tasting droop:
Untongued, all beauty s bright juice sours.

Frankenstein Vs. Mary Shelley s Frankenstein

Frankenstein vs. Mary Shelley
Frankenstein is one of the most influential books in gothic literature. The author of this masterpiece
is Mary Shelley; her complicated life influenced her to write Frankenstein. Most wonder why Mary
Shelley chose to write Frankenstein and what influenced her. Mary Shelley s early life was
challenging and it had an impact on her writing. Her trip to Scotland changed her morals and
love life inclined the events within her novel. World events within Mary Shelley s time period
also influenced her and the ideas in Frankenstein. Classified as horror fiction, Frankenstein is a
more serious work than people give it credit for. The novel is not only a provocative interrogation
of scientific method but also an exploration of the nature of loneliness and the role of environment
in shaping an individual s psyche (Huntley). Mary Shelley relied on her life experiences to form
the basis of her novel.A passage from Mary Shelley s introduction of Frankenstein states:
I saw with shut eyes, but acute mental vision I saw the pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling
beside the thing he had put together. I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then,
on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life and stir with an uneasy, half vital
motion. Frightful must it be, for supremely frightful would be the effect of any human endeavor to

The Vinland Map
Abstract: In the mid nineteen sixties, the Vinland map was found. It was renowned because it
demonstrated that the recorded reality that Columbus was the person who found America. In
reality Vikings were the ones who found America. The Vikings were fishermen and ranchers
who ended up being warriors who originated from Scandinavia; they lived from the year 793
until 1066. [Hassan, 2013] What is the evidence suggesting that the map might be authentic?
Greenland was discovered upper east of North America on the Vinland map, and it was
particularly pointed by indicating and exact to modern day maps of Greenland. In the mid
1990s, from the base of the map, a little example was cut for carbon 14 dating. After a long time,
the results were accounted for, and the example was dated in the year 1425. In 1965,
archeologists discovered correct confirmation that the Vikings arrived 500 years before
Columbus. They found the old Viking settlement in Newfoundland. What is the evidence
suggesting whether the map is fake or not? Some of the examples to show if the map is fake or
not are as follows: The Ink examination which was done in 1966 when a meeting took place

A literature review (Abdullah 2001, Sheppard 2001, Yong 2003) reveals that numerous case
studies involve general comparisons that lack a depth of study in Malaysia. Further, this study,
which uses a sample of Malaysian based Japanese and Western MNCs , in addition to Malaysian
local firms, is deemed important due to the magnitude of these MNCs impacts on the Malaysian
economy. According to Ariff
(2004) of the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research, the United States and Japan are the
second and third largest investors in Malaysia. Their total exports and imports were above USD38
billion and USD18 billion respectively (Ministry of International Trade 2005). Also, these MNCs
create huge employment and skill enhancement opportunities in Malaysia. In addition, data
collection and preliminary interviews with the senior management of various industries reveal that
the personal care industry is ideal for this study, given its competitive nature in which the labour
turnover rate is high and the employees are highly mobilised. This industry is also considered as
ideal in terms of the growing Asian market, the ability of such companies to offer higher than
average pay packages (MEF, 2004), and high labour turnover (14.5 per cent) as a consequence of
the heavy poaching of talented cadres by both business rivals and unrelated industries (MEF, 2004).
This situation calls for investigation into the personal care industry. Thus, this

Diplomatic efforts have failed to freeze these nuclear development efforts. These programs pose a
threat to international security. They also have the potential to ignite regional nuclear arms races as
neighboring countries seek to safeguard themselves. What many scholars and theorists of
International Security lack is empirical evidence to such questions: Of what significance are Rogue
States to International Security? Do Rogue States constitute serious threat to International Security?
Theory
In international relations I take the stance of a realist. Realists believe that mankind is not inherently
benevolent but rather self centered and competitive. Therefore States in international relations are
archaic and it becomes a game of the survival of the fittest. In order for one to understand rogue
states in International Security one must first recognize and have an understanding of the two main
theories in international relations: Realism and liberalism. What is Realism? Realism is interpreted
in many different ways. Realism is the tendency to view or interpret things as they actually are.
Machiavelli and Thucydides are said to be the founding fathers of realism in international relations
and believe that the international System is archaic. The Prominent theorists in the school of

Ethnology Of Marcel Mauss The Gift
The Power of Giving Marcel Mauss ethnology The Gift was originally published in 1925. In this
ethnology, Mauss aimed to answer the question In primitive or archaic types of society what is the
principle whereby the gift received has to be repaid? What force is there in the thing given which
compels the recipient to make a return? (1) He successfully answered this through extensive
research by comparing cultures in Polynesia, Melanesia, and North West America. He found that
the structure of giftgivingincluded power entitlement more from the giver than the receiver. The
Gift was a good ethnology because of the adequate comparison of cultures, the structure of the

One common theme was potlatch. According to the online dictionary, a potlatch is a
ceremonial feast where possessions are destroyed or given away to display wealth or enhance
prestige .(source) This was shown to exist in multiple cultures. This knowledge made it known
to the reader that gift giving comes along with prestations. There are certain obligations and
expectations that come along with gift giving, and it is typically the prestations that are most
important. One important prestation is the formation of relationships, as these events typically
focus on groups rather than individuals. Mauss even stated For it is groups, and not individuals,
which carry on exchange, make contracts, and are bound by obligations . (3) He showed the
importance of relationships over material gifts and how they affected several people at once.
Another common prestation that was considered important was the purity of the gift. Mauss
stated, Another theme plays its part in the economy and morality of the gift: that of the gift
made to men in the sight of gods or nature. (12) The people of the discussed cultures did believe
each gift had its own personality. That is why it was a typical act for the donor to receive
acceptance and approval from the gods before giving a gift. It is through the understanding of
these two themes, that the readers are more able to understand the complex way in which other
cultures exchange gifts. These two ideas were able to be applied to all of the cultures discussed

Essay On What Role Did George Washington Play In...
George Washington became the first president of the United States in 1789, and Thomas Jefferson
became the third president of the United States in 1801, shortly after. The United States of America
was a brand new country and there were still quite a few kinks to solve in the government.
Establishing a stable government was important for a baby country like the United States, and
George Washington and Thomas Jeffersonhelped do that during both presidential terms. George
Washington played a large role in implementing a strong and secure government through many
parts of his presidency. As soon as George Washington was appointed to being President and sworn
into office, the first members in Congress were also elected to begin their duties. Immediately...

As soon as Thomas Jefferson began his journey as the President of the United States, Jefferson
brought an end to the Alien and Sedition Acts, brought forth by John Adams. The passing of the
Alien and Sedition Acts by John Adams and the rest of the Federalist party caused hostility toward
the government, so with the termination of the acts, the government began to regain its calmness.
Jefferson also bought the Louisiana Purchase in presidency term. The Louisiana Purchase, bought
from France at the total cost of $15 million, encouraged the citizens of the United States to expand
west. The expansion caused the economy to flourish, making the government more financially
stable. Jefferson also created a democratic non aristocratic government. The idea was that in order
to be a better government, the government should govern less, so that is what the government did.
This form of government made sure that not one person rose to absolute power and in doing so, it
kept the interests of the people in mind, so the people were happy. Another accomplishment of
Thomas Jefferson s presidency was the death of the Federalist party. Seeing as the government no
longer was divided, it was more stable. Thomas Jefferson s eradication of the Alien and Sedition
Acts caused more stability in the government through ending the hostility the acts were bringing to
the people. Because of the end of the Alien and Sedition Acts, the people were less hostile, which
caused the government to become more stable. When Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Purchase,
it caused many people to spread out west. The buying of the Louisiana Purchase contributed to the
stability of the American government by bringing forth financial aid as the economy thrived. The
creation of the democratic non aristocratic government made the government more stable because

The Issue of Mass Illegal Immigration to the United States
Introduction America is deemed the land of the free and the home of the brave. The very fabric of
this great nation was built upon immigrants from the Pilgrims landing on Plymouth Rock to the
millions of immigrants landing at Ellis Island. America is known as a melting pot of many different
cultures and ethnic groups with roughly 11.7 million illegal immigrants living here. There has been
a long standing love/hate relationship with the issue of immigration. It has long been debated as to
whether or not we should continue to allow immigrant into our country so freely. Since the 1700 s
the U.S. has been working on and has implemented policies try to restrict and govern the
immigrants entering this country. Many immigrants come to America looking for a better way of
life than what was destined for them in their native lands. Prior to the events of 9/11, for nearly two
decades, America welcomed immigrations to our country with open arms. After 9/11, America s
ideals begin to shift pertaining to immigrants, our nation s safety, and borderpatrol. America was
left with great fear, post 9/11, and began to implement many changes in our border patrol and
immigration laws. In response to record numbers of illegal border crossings and the security fears
triggered by the 9/11 attacks, over the past two decades the United Stateshas steadily increased its
efforts to secure its borders against illegal immigration. The number of U.S. Border Patrol agents

A Brief Note On Wave And Tide Energy
Wave Tide Energy
What is it?
Wave and tide energy are energy harvested from the movement of tides, the rising of waves and
the temperature of the ocean water. Each of these energy stores are a renewable energy currently
making its grand entrance to the world. Tidal energy has several methods in which it can be
harnessed, as with wave energy as well. To begin, tidal energy can be harnessed far out to sea or
near the shore. The popular method of underwater turbines to harness wave power are currently
undergoing rigorous testing. In addition to these turbines there are methods than involve directing
water towards a specific location and damning as well, however these methods cause much more
impact to the surrounding environment. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While other methods of dams and the like are effective, they produce many disastrous
environmental effects.
Costs The cost of this technology is high, due to the massive amount of infrastructure needed to
harness such power. Currently, Renewable Northwest, estimates that the present cost for wave
energy is 10 30c a kWh and tidal energy is 8 12c a kWh, the future estimated cost of wave is 5
6c, tidal 4 6c kWh (Ocean (Wave and Tidal)). However, this cost is often shadowed by the
massive price tag to build the necessary turbines and the large project period sometimes spanning
as long as a decade. As with many other renewable resources the overall cost is low after
infrastructure is in place, however the building projects take extensive amounts of time and
resources.
Prospective future
It has been estimated that there is between 150 and 750 TWH of recoverable energy available in
the oceans. However current technologies are not capable of handling such power. The field of
Ocean energy is quickly gaining a following and expanding rapidly. There are several test sites
off the coast of Scotland, as well as off the US s western shore and outside of Alaska. Tides can be
predicted centuries in advance making their predictability far higher than any other renewable
resource such as solar and wind energy. There are numerous areas across the globe that harbor
enormous potential for generating renewable energy. Places such as the Northwest coast in the

Racism In To Kill A Mockingbird By Horton Foote
I know when I was a little I believed most of what I was told. I believe this could be said for most
people out there. To Kill a Mockingbird by Horton Foote has some similar things going for it. Jem
Finch a 10 year old boy and his 6 year old sister Scout (also referred to as Jean Louis) experience
situations where this is very relevant. The screenplay is set in Maycomb, Alabama in 1932. The
town is still fairly racist, this is really shown in a court case known as the Tom Robinson case. All
in all the Theme of To Kill a Mockingbirdis do not believe everything you hear.
In the beginning of the screenplay Jem and Scout meet Dill (whose real name is Charles Baker
Harris) who is a 6 year old boy that seems to stretch the truth about his father. When the three of
them first meet Dill says that he does not have a father, but moments later he changes what he
means saying My daddy owns the L and N Railroad (Foote 10). If that does not seem a little
questionable towards the middle of the screenplay he changes what he says again. Dill says ...
my daddy was a railroad man until he got rich. Now he flies airplanes (Foote 47). The whole
thing with him and his dad just seems like it is exaggerated or made up after this point. Most
might think that he makes this up because he originally says that he does not know his father.
This is very probable because after Dill says what his dad, does he almost you could say fantasizes
about his dad picking him up on a train or sweeping down to

Existentialism could be defined as a philosophical theory that focuses on the individual person
being a free and responsible person who determines his or her own development through acts of

ever to live. Minds such as Kierkegaard and Nietzsche all had their own view on what existentialism
was and major impact on the development of this thesis. Each of these philosophies played a huge

What Is Lean Management And The Practical Concepts Within It
Introduction
The purpose of the assignment is to demonstrate an understanding of lean management and the
practical concepts within it. Lean management is an approach used to strategize development
planning and improving targets, while delivering value to customers. Although company leaders
may be enthused and conversant frequently they lack the ability to empower people to respond
effectively to customer needs and competitive threats. Implementing a lean management system it
shows how to support a company s transformation by linking strategic management to
companywide activities that furthers the corporate vision. Lean management is about operating the
most efficient and effective organisation possible with least cost and zero waste (Thomas L.
Jackson, 1996). In order to analyse this in a more in depth this assignment will examine Subway s
operational management. Operation management is the activity of managing the resources which
create and deliver the product and services.
1.About Subway Subway is one of the largest fast food restaurants in the world that mainly sells
sandwiches and salads. It is one of the fastest growing franchises with 44,447 outlets in 111

A Report On Toyota s Production System
Abstract
Toyota today is one of the leading lean example in today s manufacturing market. Starting back in
the 1930 s with the idea of Just in Time to cut down cost in waste from overstocked storage rooms
to a better efficient assembly lines who produced what was needed at a certain time. The Kanban
system is one of the most used methods that the Japanese found during the 1950 s during a trip to
United States in a super market.
Kanban Systems
Lean manufacturing originated long before Toyota and Ford, however the thought that it originated
with Toyota is flattering since they are the ones who perfected it. By creating the Toyota Production
System (TPS), Toyota found a better way to produce large quantities of product efficiently with
eliminating the waste factor and while cutting down cost. Taiichi Ohno a former Toyota vice
president promoted the idea of JIT (Just in Time) which means producing the necessary units in the
necessary quantities at the necessary time. (Monden) Which leads to Toyota s ultimate goal in the
TPS is to improve productivity for better return in investment. To have continuous flow in a
production system Toyota sought out to achieve the concept of JIT and autonomation . Since the
TPS is what creates the parts who monitors the JIT system? The kanban system which is an
informational system that controls quantities being produce in each process. As the discussion
carries on throughout this paper about Toyota and their use of the kanban system the topic

A Narrative Of The Captivity By Mrs. Mary Rowlandson
We all believe in good and evil, that through this belief becomes our morals as humans. However,
during this early American period it s known that the colonial people in Massachusetts had their
beliefs set on the puritan way of life and living. Furthermore, these colonial people who settled in
the Massachusetts Bay colony didn t expect there life to be disrupted through attacks taken place.
Through the experience of one woman, A Narrative of the Captivity by Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, an
American colonial women, accurately depicts historical record of the attacks made of the King
Philips war and her being held for ransom eleven weeks in its descriptions of the brutalities and
godliness which sets the tone between what is truth and what is contradictory in the eyes of
Rowlandson and the native Americans. Moreover, through this war fueled battle the colonial
people felt as if their colony was disrupted and attacked. Not to mention, how the natives felt,
particularly the Wampanoag tribe. The natives had been kind to share half of their land while the
English were killing their crops. This drove the Natives mad and through this they were labeled as
savages by the English people.
Subsequently, this brings Rowlandson to invite readers in through her memoir of her captivity.

Additionally, the bivariate analysis in the present study demonstrated that varied levels of initial pre

it means that some individuals may respond differently to the interventions.
Overall, the present research could be viewed as a pilot study which has tested the comparative

potential for exploring the the same interventions with more comprehensive research which also

It faced the problems similar to those of Italy. There were 9 cabinets in 1920 28. Moreover,
Germany was unified by Bismarck. It inherited from Prussia the tradition of authoritarianism and
contempt for democracy. German people were dissatisfied with the inefficient administration of the
Weimar government. In addition, the Weimar Constitution vested too much power in the hands of
the President, which increased the chance for Hitler to become a dictator.
Postwar Economic Difficulties
Production came to a halt in Italy after the war. Over one million people became unemployed.
Besides, 2.5 million soldiers had returned and waited for jobs. Italy also owed a huge amount of
war debts. There was hyper inflation. Enterprises and factories closed down. The economy was
going to collapse. People longed for a saviour.
Other than war debts, Germany was also burdened with the huge indemnity imposed by the Treaty
of Versailles. No money was available for reconstruction. The mark dropped in value horribly
when the French troops occupied the Ruhr district in 1923. Although Stresemann could overcome
the economic hardship for the time being with American aid, the Great Depression of 1929 put
Germany in an economic crisis again. By 1932 6 million people were unemployed. People had no

The Knight And His Squire
Very early the next morning, the knight and his squire set out on their travels. They stole silently
away from the village without bidding good by to any one; and they made such haste that at sunrise
they felt themselves quite safe from pursuit.
Don Quixote, riding in full armor astride of gaunt Rozinante, felt that he was indeed the most
valorous knight in the world; and no doubt he was a formidable sight. As for Sancho Panza, he rode
like a patriarch, with his knapsack on one side of him and a leather bottle on the other, his feet
almost dragging on the ground. His mind was full of thoughts about that island of which he hoped
to be the governor.
The sun rose high above the hills. The two travelers jogged onward across the plains of Montiel.
Both were silent, for both had high purposes in view.
At length, Sancho Panza spoke: I beseech you, Sir Knight errant, be sure to remember the island
you promised me. I dare say I shall make out to govern it, let it be ever so big.
Don Quixote answered with becoming dignity: Friend Sancho, you must know that it has always
been the custom of knights errant to conquer islands and put their squires over them as governors.
Now it is my intention to keep up that good custom.
You are indeed a rare master, said Sancho Panza.
Well, I am thinking I might even improve upon that good custom, said Don Quixote. What if I
should conquer three or four islands and set you up as master of them all?
You could do nothing that would

A Long Period Of Learning And Teaching Guitar Essay
Many people who pick up the guitar as a hobby, quickly become discouraged. If you are one of
these people, please don t feel bad at all. I personally took a few months before I began to even
get the majority of the simplest concepts. After a long period of learning and teaching guitar, I ve
boiled down several techniques to easily and quickly pick it up. Let s get started! First, make a log
of everything you do in practice. This one sounds kind of goofy, but, trust me, it s monumental in
your progress. Steve Vai noted in several interviews, that everything he practiced in guitar, he wrote
down. Not only did he write down what he practiced, but how he practiced it, when he practiced
it, and why he practiced it. Do this, and see what kinds of patterns you are developing. Second, if
you ve got a weak area in your practice, write it down, then practice it! Write down in your log, I
m weak in scales/chords/finger speed/etc, and will practice it for 30 45 minutes. Do this. I did
it, and it helped me more than doing anything else. Now, is just writing down what you re weak
in and what you need to do going to change it? No, not at all. You have to make the
COMMITMENT to practice it, if you want to get better at it. This sounds like common sense, but
the majority of people do not make the commitment to practice something they re not good at for
an extended period of time, and opt instead to use several excuses, such as: I m just not good at it.
It s boring. I d

What Is the Importance of Accountability in the Military...
What is the importance of accountability in the military and in the work place? What is
accountability by definition: (Department Of Defense) The obligation imposed by law or lawful
order or regulation on an officer or other person for keeping accurate record of property, documents,
or funds. The person having this obligation may or may not have actual possession of the property,
documents, or funds. Accountability is concerned primarily with records, while responsibility is
concerned primarily with custody, care, and safekeeping. Accountability is very important because
it allows for your chain of command to know where you are at at the moment. Accountability in the
workplace is defined as doing the right thing consistently, day in and... Show more content on

Anything can and will happen especially in combat, that s why the team member should make
sure that the team or squad leader know where the soldier and his or her equipment is at all
times. The Army spends a lot of money on equipment and belongings for the soldiers, so the
Army expects to know where its equipment is. No matter what someone is always responsible
for equipment in the Army. Accountability is important because it assures someone that needs
will be met. If someone is accountable, you can trust that they will do what they claimed.
Without accountability you would not be able to put your trust in someone to complete a job
for you and other members of the team, or even show up on time to an important event ,or
formation. It is important because it holds each and everyone accountability for his or her
actions.Accountability is an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for
ones actions. Now for the Army, it becomes an obligation more than willingness while you have
to be willing to do it as well. Those that are unable to be accountable are the ones that jeopardize
the combat readiness of any unit. Basically it is the understanding that from the bottom up. Top
down and laterally everyone is going to do and is willing to do the right thing even when no one
else is looking. This is practiced at your home base where everyone is assigned

Speech For Graduation Speech
Graduation Speech What is the secret to success? Many people think that you can rely on only
on yourself to be accomplished in this life time. However, there are many strategies to utilize on
the road to success and the concept of a self made man has a common misconception. Arnold
Schwarzenegger shattered this idea of the self made man as he presented his speech to the
graduating class of Houston University in the spring of 2017. The crowd was powerfully moved
by the words that flowed from Arnold s mouth. Arnold successfully establishes credibility,
demonstrates emotion, and uses logic to motivate this graduating class. Throughout this speech
Arnolds exceeds in these three categories tremendously. The accomplished actor, body builder,
and the former governor of California sheds just a little bit of light from his ray of success to the
graduating class of Houston University. Arnold thanks everybody from the president of the
university down to the family and parents that are in attendance in the crowd. Arnold talks about
how if you reflect on his life and every accomplishment he has under his belt it would be easy to
assume that he did it alone. Arnold starts his speech by talking about his dreams. Arnold talks
about where his journey began. It all started when he was younger relaxing at the beach and he
met a lifeguard who introduced him to body building. At this moment, his life changed forever he
dedicated his life to the art of body building. This dream of being the

  • 2. The Louisiana Purchase Shaping America The Louisiana Purchase shaping America Christopher Richeson East Forsyth High School Mrs. Callendar American History 4th Period December 15, 2015 Abstract The Louisiana Purchase was a major event in the growth of the United States of America. Purchased from France for 15 million by Thomas Jefferson in 1803, it gave America twice the available land, adding 827,000 square miles. Some may argue the Louisiana Purchase is unconstitutional, but Jefferson found a way around that. The Constitution says land may be acquired through treaties such as the Louisiana Purchase. After the accusation of the Louisiana Territory, Jefferson had an expedition lead by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. The goal of the expedition was to map the new territory and find a quicker path to the Pacific Ocean. The entire expedition lasted a little longer than two years to complete. The Louisiana Purchase was a deal between The United States and France over 827,000 square miles west of the Mississippi River . (Wilson, G. 2003) It allowed for major expansion and growth for the small republic in 1803. What if France would have denied our efforts to acquire the land, would The Unites States be the same as it is today? Through my research I believe that without the acquisition of the Louisiana Territory, The United States would not have been able to grow and become what it is today. Considered to be one of, if not the greatest real estate purchase in American history, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Latin Is A Waste Of Time Historically, Latin was often used by the Romans. Although, Latin is considered a dead language, it can often assist careers because it s the language of law, government, logic, theology, sciences, and more. I think TCMS should add Latin as another elective because most of our vocabulary comes from Latin, it boosts SAT scores, and aid in the study of foreign languages. Many argue that studying Latin is a waste of time. However, most of the English language is derived from Latin. Statistics show that 80% of our English vocabulary is extracted from the Latin. Imagine a young student learned the English word, father. As the child begins to progress in school, they ll encounter challenging, abstract words with 3 5 syllables that could possibly come from the Latin word for father: pater and patris. When they meet words such as patronize, paternalism, and expatriate, will the young student be able to define the word? In 2014, those percentages increased dramatically, with about 95% militarypositions open to women. The idea of women being exposed to violence was a concern to the public. • 6. Legalization Of Same Sex Marriage Gabi Smith October 20, 2014 English 4 Mr. Pakula Legalization of Same Sex Marriage Everyone has the right to be with the person they love. Nobody, not even the government, should be able to take that kind of happiness and freedom away from someone. If a girl loves another girl or a guy loves another guy, it should not matter to anyone else as long as they are happy together. We are all equals in the world whether we are Black, White, Hispanic, Indian, or any other race for that matter. Why should we not be equals based on sexuality orientation (Gay Marriage Pros and Cons)? Everyone deserves to have the same equal rights. Everyone has different beliefs and nothing can or will change that. Some people believe in same sex marriage and some people do not, but there is still no reason to dislike or judge people that believe in something someone else does not believe in. Not everyone in the world has the same beliefs. That is life, it happens. So what is the point of being so against this one belief? Same sex couples do not walk around bashing on straight people for the person they love, so why can t all straight couples do the same thing and not bash on same sex couples? Not only is this situation against some people s beliefs, but it also is against the constitution. • 7. The Pros And Cons Of Freedom Of Speech Freedom of speech has central place in democratic societies. In the United States the First Amendment protects free speech as essential right of its citizens. Other democracies, such as those in western Europe also have free speech traditions, though none as extensive as the United States . But why should speech be free? Speech should be free because it provides for a good government, promotes the realization of truth, allows diversity to thrive, and is a straightforward legislative approach to speech. Free speech allows the people to hold their government accountable via the free press. A condition of a good government is freedom of information, and what has been called the right to know (Garton Ash 78), which is the responsibility of a free press to provide to the people, especially when the government is not being transparent on its own. Without a press that is free to report on public officials and the government s activity, both are able to go unchecked, at the expense of the people they are supposed to serve. In addition to this, freedom to expose public figures activities must be protected from frivolous accusations of libel because the ability to have a journalist accused of libel for revealing the truth would [threaten] the informing purpose of the First Amendment (Lewis 51). The United Statesembraced this idea when the Supreme Court case New York Times v. Sullivan (1964) decision the court changed the standards that constitute libel to the statement must be false, as well as published both knowingly and recklessly. This shifted the burden of proof from the accused to the accuser. Not only does the press need to be free to report on the activity of the government, but the people must be free to express their wants and needs to their government. A fair and legitimate democracy requires that all people have a vote as well as an opportunity to have their views heard. Garton Ash uses the words of Ronald Dworkin to explain this, a majority decision is not fair unless everyone has had the opportunity to express his or her attitudes or opinions or fears or tastes or presuppositions or prejudices or ideals (Garton Ash 77). Through her use of diction and imagery in the essay The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History , Jennifer Price characterizes American Culture as materialistic. Jennifer Price uses diction to characterize American Culture as materialistic and thoughtless in her first and second paragraphs. In describing the new plastic flamingos Price even goes as far as to describe flamingos as synonymous with wealth , and the middle class as eager to enjoy the flamingo culture, associated with wealth. It was during this time she found writing extremely difficult and resorted to set themes and deliberate exercises in style, in her efforts to find a release. The poem is based on a drawing quot; The Virgin in a Tree quot; by Paul Klee. Sylvia Plath expresses her feelings about the concept of virginity, virgins etc. She holds their morals and values accountable, for what they believe to be right and what they believe to be wrong. This underlines her faith in a woman s role as a partner in marriage, as a wife, mother, daughter especially in a family. She thinks that virginity does not deserve the fame and glory it has, in fact it will ultimately lead to the spoil of a woman s soul, how the essence will be destroyed if they are kept prisoners and constricted. As soon as Thomas Jefferson began his journey as the President of the United States, Jefferson brought an end to the Alien and Sedition Acts, brought forth by John Adams. The passing of the Alien and Sedition Acts by John Adams and the rest of the Federalist party caused hostility toward the government, so with the termination of the acts, the government began to regain its calmness. Jefferson also bought the Louisiana Purchase in presidency term. The Louisiana Purchase, bought from France at the total cost of $15 million, encouraged the citizens of the United States to expand west. The expansion caused the economy to flourish, making the government more financially stable. Jefferson also created a democratic non aristocratic government. The idea was that in order to be a better government, the government should govern less, so that is what the government did. This form of government made sure that not one person rose to absolute power and in doing so, it kept the interests of the people in mind, so the people were happy. Another accomplishment of Thomas Jefferson s presidency was the death of the Federalist party. Seeing as the government no longer was divided, it was more stable. Thomas Jefferson s eradication of the Alien and Sedition Acts caused more stability in the government through ending the hostility the acts were bringing to the people. • 25. The Issue of Mass Illegal Immigration to the United States Introduction America is deemed the land of the free and the home of the brave. The very fabric of this great nation was built upon immigrants from the Pilgrims landing on Plymouth Rock to the millions of immigrants landing at Ellis Island. America is known as a melting pot of many different cultures and ethnic groups with roughly 11.7 million illegal immigrants living here. There has been a long standing love/hate relationship with the issue of immigration. It has long been debated as to whether or not we should continue to allow immigrant into our country so freely. Since the 1700 s the U.S. has been working on and has implemented policies try to restrict and govern the immigrants entering this country. Many immigrants come to America looking for a better way of life than what was destined for them in their native lands. Prior to the events of 9/11, for nearly two decades, America welcomed immigrations to our country with open arms. After 9/11, America s ideals begin to shift pertaining to immigrants, our nation s safety, and borderpatrol. America was left with great fear, post 9/11, and began to implement many changes in our border patrol and immigration laws. In response to record numbers of illegal border crossings and the security fears triggered by the 9/11 attacks, over the past two decades the United Stateshas steadily increased its efforts to secure its borders against illegal immigration. Wave and tide energy are energy harvested from the movement of tides, the rising of waves and the temperature of the ocean water. Each of these energy stores are a renewable energy currently making its grand entrance to the world. Tidal energy has several methods in which it can be harnessed, as with wave energy as well. To begin, tidal energy can be harnessed far out to sea or near the shore. The popular method of underwater turbines to harness wave power are currently undergoing rigorous testing. In addition to these turbines there are methods than involve directing water towards a specific location and damning as well, however these methods cause much more impact to the surrounding environment. Costs The cost of this technology is high, due to the massive amount of infrastructure needed to harness such power. Currently, Renewable Northwest, estimates that the present cost for wave energy is 10 30c a kWh and tidal energy is 8 12c a kWh, the future estimated cost of wave is 5 6c, tidal 4 6c kWh (Ocean (Wave and Tidal)). However, this cost is often shadowed by the massive price tag to build the necessary turbines and the large project period sometimes spanning as long as a decade. As with many other renewable resources the overall cost is low after infrastructure is in place, however the building projects take extensive amounts of time and resources. Prospective future It has been estimated that there is between 150 and 750 TWH of recoverable energy available in the oceans. However current technologies are not capable of handling such power. The field of Ocean energy is quickly gaining a following and expanding rapidly. There are several test sites off the coast of Scotland, as well as off the US s western shore and outside of Alaska. To Kill a Mockingbird by Horton Foote has some similar things going for it. Jem Finch a 10 year old boy and his 6 year old sister Scout (also referred to as Jean Louis) experience situations where this is very relevant. The screenplay is set in Maycomb, Alabama in 1932. The town is still fairly racist, this is really shown in a court case known as the Tom Robinson case. All in all the Theme of To Kill a Mockingbirdis do not believe everything you hear. In the beginning of the screenplay Jem and Scout meet Dill (whose real name is Charles Baker Harris) who is a 6 year old boy that seems to stretch the truth about his father. When the three of them first meet Dill says that he does not have a father, but moments later he changes what he means saying My daddy owns the L and N Railroad (Foote 10). If that does not seem a little questionable towards the middle of the screenplay he changes what he says again. Dill says ... my daddy was a railroad man until he got rich. Now he flies airplanes (Foote 47). The whole thing with him and his dad just seems like it is exaggerated or made up after this point. Most might think that he makes this up because he originally says that he does not know his father. I personally took a few months before I began to even get the majority of the simplest concepts. After a long period of learning and teaching guitar, I ve boiled down several techniques to easily and quickly pick it up. Let s get started! First, make a log of everything you do in practice. This one sounds kind of goofy, but, trust me, it s monumental in your progress. Steve Vai noted in several interviews, that everything he practiced in guitar, he wrote down. Not only did he write down what he practiced, but how he practiced it, when he practiced it, and why he practiced it. Do this, and see what kinds of patterns you are developing. Second, if you ve got a weak area in your practice, write it down, then practice it! Write down in your log, I m weak in scales/chords/finger speed/etc, and will practice it for 30 45 minutes. Do this. I did it, and it helped me more than doing anything else. Now, is just writing down what you re weak in and what you need to do going to change it? No, not at all. You have to make the COMMITMENT to practice it, if you want to get better at it. This sounds like common sense, but the majority of people do not make the commitment to practice something they re not good at for an extended period of time, and opt instead to use several excuses, such as: I m just not good at it.
