Hindu texts are manuscripts and voluminous historical literature
related to any of the diverse traditions within Hinduism. A few texts are
shared resources across these traditions and broadly considered as Hindu
scriptures. These include the Puranas, Itihasa and Vedas. Scholars hesitate
in defining the term "Hindu scriptures" given the diverse nature
of Hinduism but many list the Bhagavad Gita and the Agamas as Hindu
scriptures, and Dominic Goodall includes Bhagavata
Purana and Yajnavalkya Smriti in the list of Hindu scriptures as well.

The Hindu Epic literature is found in genre of Hindu texts such
as:-
• Vedic literature (1500-500 BCE).
• Puranas.
• Vedas.
We will see in detail about the VEDAS &Puranas.
❖ VEDAS :-

3. The Vedas are a large body of religious texts originating in ancient India.
They are said to be originated from lords Vishnu and passed on to Veda
Vyasa:thesagewhocompiledtheVedasforpreachingintheworld.
➢ There are four Vedas:-
1.the Rigveda,
2.the Yajurveda,
3.the Samaveda and
4.the Atharvaveda
1)RIGVEDA :- Rigveda is based on reciting hymns the hymns are dedicated to
Rigvedic deities. The rigveda is structure on clear principle.
2)SAMAVEDA :- Samaveda consists of chanting song of the deities. It is
mainly derieved from the Rigveda.
3)YAJURVEDA :- The Yajurveda consists of porose mantras. The Yajurveda
has been primary source of information about sacrifice during the vedic time.
4)ATHARVAVEDA:- Is the text belong to the atharvan and angirasa poets. It
has been source of information about Vedic culture customs and beliefs.
❖ Puranas:-
The Puranas (Sanskrit: पुराण purāṇa, "of ancient times") are
Hindu religious texts. They contain narratives about the history of the
Universe from creation to destruction and the genealogies of kings,
heroes, sages, and deities. Some of the Puranas are discourses on

4. cosmology, geography and Hindu philosophy. Vyasa, the narrator of
the Mahabharata, is traditionally considered the compiler of
the Puranas.
❖ Origins:-
The Brhadaranyaka Upanishad refers to purana as the
"fifth Veda" , itihāsapurāṇaṃ pañcamaṃ vedānāṃ, reflecting the early
religious importance of these myths, presumably then in oral form. The
term also appears in the Atharvaveda . According to Matysa Purana, they
are said to narrate five subjects, called Pancha
Lakshana pañcalakṣaṇa ("five distinguishing marks"):
1. Sarga: the creation of the universe.
2. Pratisarga: secondary creations, mostly re-creations after
dissolution.
3. Vamśa: genealogy of the gods and sages.
4. Manvañtara: the creation of the human race and the first
human beings. The epoch of the Manus' rule, 71 celestial Yugas
or 308,448,000 years.
5. Vamśānucaritam: the histories of the patriarchs of the lunar
and solar dynasties.
❖ The Mahapuranas:-
Of the many texts designated Puranas the most important are
the Mahāpurāṇas. These are always said to be eighteen in number, divided
into three groups of six.
The Mahapuranas are frequently classified according the three aspects of
the divine Trimurti,
• Brahma Puranas: Brahma Purana, Brahmānda Purana, Brahma
Vaivarta Purana, Mārkandeya Purana, Bhavishya Purana,
• Vishnu Puranas: Vishnu Purana, Bhagavata Purana, Nāradeya
Purana, Garuda Purana, Padma Purana, Varaha Purana, Vāmana
Purana, Kūrma Purana, Matsya Purana
• Shiva Puranas: Shiva Purana, Linga Purana, Skanda Purana, Agni
Purana, Vāyu Purana.
