The Legacy of JP Morgan Essay example
In 1871, the banking house of Drexel, Morgan Co. was established by John Pierpont Morgan. Twenty
four years later it was renamed J.P. Morgan Co., which it was to remain until the firm s purchase by
Chase Manhattan in 2000. (Hughes 23) At this point, Chase Manhattan was the largest banking
company in the United States. This was a far cry from the 1980 s when Morgan boasted the largest
market capitalization of any American bank and was more expensive to buy than Citicorp. (Hughes
11) While J.P. Morgan could not imagine the path banking would take in the U.S. with his passing in
1913; his banking house would have a strong hold on American banking for much of the 20th century.

Thus, from an early age, Pierpont s life was scripted for a promising future in banking and business.
Although Pierpont did follow the path laid before him, this was not the case for the majority of those
born into the same circumstances. Pierpont s generation of wealthy heirs often chose the easy life by
simply living off the amassed fortunes of earlier generations. Others, such as the robber barons,
accumulated wealth not through inheritance, but by working from the bottom to the top during the
Gilded Age (Strouse, 129). Two men fitting a category of rags to riches, and of whom were also
connected to Pierpont through business, were Andrew Carnegie and Thomas Alva Edison.
In 1869, Junius Morgan became acquainted with Carnegie under the construction and financing of a
steel railroad bridge across the Mississippi River. The bridge finally opened in 1874 as the St. Louis
Bridge, but due to an ongoing mild depression in the economy, sparse rail traffic used the continental
highway. The Morgan s did not waiver in their support for Carnegie, but instead financed future
bridges and rail systems as well. With a solid business relationship in tact, Pierpont and Carnegie
collaborated again in 1901 to form the world s largest corporation, U.S. Steel (Chambers, 44).
Originally called the Carnegie Company, Pierpont

Factors Influenced On Byatt s Works Essay
Factors influenced on Byatt s works There are several facts in Byatt s intellectual life which impacts
her fiction and nonfiction alike. Nevertheless, the supreme one that constituted the central number of
her works remains the influence of one particular Cambridge teacher and literary critic: Franklin
Raymond Leavis (1895 1978) who shaped Byatt s view on the moral importance of literature. It stands
worth to talk about him, because he not only influenced directly A.S Byatt on the other hand, he
formed the entire course of Angelo American 20th century literary criticism, an understanding of
which is vital to read Byatt s fiction. In an autobiographical gesture, her fictions often send their
heroines to Cambridge. Via the time Byatt went to all female Newnham College, Cambridge, in 1957
to get her B.A., Leavis, then 62, was the ruling intellectual, position he had engaged for 30 years.
Leavis, his wife Q.D. (Known as Queenie ) and their circle, which included such critics as I, A,
Richards and William Empson, applied great effect on the literary of the day. It stays hard now to
imagine Leavis as a radical, since he is so often critiqued for his exclusive and special judgments.
However, consider the shape of university life as it was found and then rejected by Leaves when he
entered Cambridge immediately after World War I. Until the last decades of the 19th century, taking
up the study of literature in the university meant studying the classics that means,

Compare And Contrast Two Different Approaches To Cognitive...
Compare and Contrast two different approaches to Cognitive Psychology
This essay will be focused on two different approaches to cognitive psychology: Cognitive
Neuropsychology and Cognitive Neuroscience. Cognitive Neuropsychology is concerned with the
patterns of cognitive performance and emphasis on the cognitive effects of brain damaged patients
who suffered lesions, injuries or diseases, providing vest information on normal human cognition.
(Eysenck and Keane 2015, p.5) Whereas cognitive neuroscience involves in depth study of our brain
and behaviours. As the brain contains numerous neurones and is so complicated, the cognitive
neuroscience emphasis on the biological side of the brain and focuses on the lobes that are divided
from the cerebral cortex.
The main similarity of cognitive neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience is that they are both
interested in brain damaged patients and believe that different areas of the brain are highly specialised.
For example, one of the main theoretical assumptions of cognitive neuropsychology states modularity
, which means the modules in the cognitive system function independently, or separately of each other.
(Eysenck and Keane 2015, p.6) In addition, it is also explained that these modules do show domain
specificity , meaning the modules responds only to the specific kinds of stimuli but not the others.
Compare to cognitive neuroscience, it is believed that modules , as well as hubs are associated with

The Tragic Hero in Antigone
Aristotle s theories on tragedy were first established during the fourth century in the
Poetics, where he defines what makes a tragic hero. Aristotle suggests that a tragic hero is a character
who has a high social standing and embodies great nobility in his/her personality. They are neither a
villain nor are they entirely good, but a person somewhat like us, raised to a higher position in society.
In addition, the downfall of a tragic hero is caused by fault of their own, often through arrogance or
pride, as the result of free will. It is triggered by a weakness in their character or an error of their
judgment, which is known as their tragic flaw, or hamartia. The tragic hero s misfortune also exceeds
the mistake they made, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because Creon is the most responsible for the all the dark turns in this play, he is left to suffer for the
consequences for his actions even after death, which exceed his tragic flaw. He had the most to lose,
thus evoking feelings of pity and fear in the audience. Creon recognizes his mistake only when he
loses it all and it is too late to reverse the consequences of his actions. He undergoes a drastic change
of character, supported by his final statements in the play: I have been rash and foolish... Fate has
brought all my pride to a thought of dust. In this quote, Creon realizes that he is at fault because he can
t control fate and his pride took him nowhere. He even goes as far to admit that he killed his son and
wife. The audience feels sorry for Creon because now he is alone and lost all of his pride and glory as
king.
Creon undergoes much loss because of his tragic flaw and the audience stimulates our pity and fear for
him, making him the epitome of a tragic hero. His pride led to his ultimate downfall and he does not
comply to Teiresias warning until it is too late. Creon shows all of the characteristics of a tragic hero,
from being born into a high social stature to experiencing misfortune that isn t entirely deserved. In
the end, the laws of the gods overcome the laws of men, which Creon has failed to see. Creon ends up
suffering due to his pride, which teaches an important lesson on

Optic Neuritis Case Studies
Optic Neuritis
Introduction
Optic neuritis (ON) is a disease related to the eye that causes visual impairment. ON arises due to the
inflammation and demyelination of the optic nerve, affecting interpretation of visual signals causing
blurred, grey or dim vision. More often than not, ON is monocular in scope however there are cases
where both eyes are affected. ON has been known to be highly associated with Multiple Sclerosis
(MS) however an individual does not have to have MS to be diagnosed with ON.  81
Epidemiology and Pathology
Optic Neuritis has been found to persist more commonly in young healthy adults, with females having
a higher incidence rate than males. ON is the most common optic neuropathy in individuals under the
age of 50 years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Acute ON usually involves a singular eye being affected whereby 90% of ON cases take place; the
other 10% of cases occurring in both eyes is found to occur more frequently in children under the age
of 15. The Optic Neuritis Treatment Trials (ONTT) identified vision loss and eye pain as the most
common symptoms found in patients with acute unilateral ON. Vision loss was found to occur steadily
over a period of a few hours to a few days, with a peak in between 1 2 weeks, whilst eye pain occurred
in 92% of those affected and would worsen through eye movement. These visual defects however
would usually resolve itself with care, with the ONTT presenting 56% of participants being clear after
one year and 73% cleared after 10 (Cleary et al., 1997). In other cases, a patient may become affected
with papillitis (intraocular ON) causing hyperemia leading to the swelling of the optic disc; a point of
exit for optic ganglion cells. This area is important for the major blood vessels to supply the retina and
thus aid in interpreting visual signals to be passed through the optic nerve into the brain. 

Summary Of Claudia Macteer
Summary
Claudia MacTeer is an adult, telling us about certain events that took place in the fall of 1941. She was
a child back then, around nine years old, but she still remembered how the marigolds didn t bloom that
fall, and she and her sister thought it was probably because of their friend, Pecola, was having her
father s baby. She then tells us that Pecola s father, Cholly Breedlove and the baby are dead.
Then there s the first season, a flashback, in Autumn in 1940, a year before the fall when no marigolds
were blooming. Claudia and her older sister, Frieda, have just started school. That autumn the
Macteers accepted Mr. Henry (Henry Washington) as a roomer because his rent would help pay the
bills and also because his former roommate was too addled to keep up. Then the family soon after got
another roomer, Pecola Breedlove, an eleven year old, dark skinned girl whom county officials placed
her there after her father burned the family s house down.
Pecola and the sisters then shared childhood adventures, and what Claudia remembers in particular is
the startling onset of Pecola s puberty when she unexpectedly first had her menstruation.
The second narrator then talked about the memories of Pecola s family. They described the house
where the Breedlove s lived (before Cholly burned it down), they were poor and they believed they
were ugly. They also pointed out the horrible relationship between Pecola s parents. Pecola also has a
fourteen year old brother, Sammy, who kept

The Speech On African American Church
Sunday was often the only day that enslaved blacks did not have to work. The Sabbath became a full
day of preaching, community building and socializing. The African American church still maintains
this practice of an extended worship day with longer services and sermons than most other religious.
The average time for blacks churches services is about ninety minutes, with the sermons lasting more
than thirty minutes long. This is the etiquette article of African American churches. The Methodist
church, however, rules governs differently. Their etiquette is designed specifically and honorably to
God. The honoring of the sanctuary in reference to the pulpit, communion table, maintain silence

Analysis Of My Last Duchess
In the poems studied, love and death are presented in very different ways. My Last Duchess is a
dramatic monologue, which describes the Duke s obsession with his Duchess. Similarly, Do not go
gentle into that good night presents love and death as a battle to prevent deaths victory. Remember , in
contrast, explores love and death through subverting the sonnet form to guidance on coping with the
death of your partner.
The title My Last Duchess demonstrates from the outset the Duke s obsession by the use of the
possessive pronoun My . Furthermore, the fact that it is a monologue with no other contributory voice
exemplifies his need to dominate and possess even the dialogue. The curtain I have drawn for you is
an oblique and metaphorical reference to the death of the Duchess not only is he revealing the
Duchess s portrait but also the beginning of her end.
His need to possess is expressed by I call that piece a wonder, now the use of the word now and piece
is significant. It is only when his wife is a portrait that he can admire her and control who looks upon
her. The Duchess has been silenced through death. Browning presents love through the obsession of
the Duchess and reflects on how death can be caused by this. The Duke is based on Alonso II who was
the ruler of Ferrara, Italy in 1559 1597, and his wife Lucrezia died in a skeptical circumstance. The
duke and the envoy go back downstairs while the duke talks about a dowry and about this statue of the

Questions On Solving The Statistical Problem
The first strategy when solving the statistical problem above is to create a plan to find how many
solutions there are for this problem. When starting this plan, the first step is to glean all the relevant
clues given in the problem. The important clues described in the statistical problem begin with their
only nine people. One person of the nine people has nine pieces of candy. A second person has no
candy. Finally, a third person has four pieces of candy because four is the mean and the media of the
problem. Gathering information from the data is what Art Costa s calls his first level of Questioning,
which is gathering information (Daws Schiro, 2008). Students must have a good understanding of
mean, median, and mode before solving this type of statistical problem. Median and mode are often
easily found Van De Walle, Karp, and Bay Williams have defined mean in two different conceptual
understandings.
According to Van De Walle, Karp Bay Williams there are two distinct interpretations for the
understanding of mean (2013). The definition of mean is to find the middle number in the set of data.
A real explanation is to spread the data evenly across all the data points where each data point is the
same as the sum, which is thirty six, refer to illustration 2. Understanding the term mean is crucial
when working with statistical problems. The first explanation of the term mean can be better
understood in the classroom when students are working on an activity

Spanking Is Ineffective
Most parents subconsciously use the same disciplinary actions that were used on them growing up.
There is a ton of variety concerning ways of disciplining your children. These include, but aren t
limited to; spanking, creating consequences, withholding privileges, and time outs. However, experts
don t recommend using spanking as a disciplinary measure, as it causes anger, antagonism, amps up
aggression, and makes the child feel devalued, as well as being ineffective in the long run. Spanking is
also known to cause antisocial behavior. It is especially ineffective with toddlers and babies because
they are unable to make the connection between their bad behavior and physical punishment.
Instead of spanking, time outs are a highly effective

Tinky Winwell Rhetorical Analysis
Zumwalt exploits a sardonic tone in order to demolish Farewell´s credibility and spoof his defective
reasoning. Utilizing rhetorical questions and litany of children´s characters she proves that the
television show ¨Teletubbies¨, despite Farewells commentary, does not encourage children to become
gay. If anything, children are most influenced by their family and their actions.
The litany of children idols embedded in the satirical argument against Falwell jeopardizes his
credibility as a televangelist. He claims that Tinky Winky (from ¨Teletubbies¨), tends to trespass into
the female sphere too often causing children who watch it to become gay. Tinky Winky is a character
that is ¨purple¨, vacuums, gardens, and is often caught ¨carrying a purse¨. Additionally, the famous
children s character has a triangle on top of its head and a rainbow television in place of the stomach
both representing gay pride. Moreover, none of the ¨Teletubbies¨ characters are assigned genders.
Falwell assumed that Tinky Winky was a male; when ¨he(she?)¨ might be a female. By implementing
a rhetorical question of the fictional character sexuality, Zumwalt is able to mock one of the numerous
defects in Falwell s accusation: Tinky Winky is a homosexual male. Allowing Zumwalt to disprove his
claim, she both logically and comedically gives several examples of beloved children characters and
picks out their flaws (physically and mentally) all having a negative impact on the child. For example,

The Interpretation Of Woodrow Wilson
The interpretation of Woodrow Wilson (1913 21)
I have taken this from an external source to show the power of idealism, and how Woodrow was
perceived.
Wilson abandoned the imperialist policy and brought to the White House a new way of looking at
America s relations with the outside world. Wilson believed that the United States was the most
politically enlightened in a sense under god, he felt that people throughout the world had their right to
choose their own governments. Wilson was only protecting people rights to democracy.
Primary Source Analysis
6. Wilson Defends the Peace Treaty and League, 1919 (Indianapolis, Indiana September 4)
As I read in between the lines of the text it comes clear that U.S appears to be the Super country and
not only that, I believe that Woodrow Wilson is protecting the interest of countries by making them
sign a Treaty explaining them not allowed to go to war for no reason of any sort.
The text conveys the talk of economic boycott I believe what he was trying to convey was that anyone
who economically trades with a country that has started a war with a country but another country and
helps them with the economy, will be part of the country of war and will not be funded and also
isolated and cannot take their decision back.
In text 5 talks about articles of the league of Nations Covenant 1919. Article 10 to article 14, talks
about any member of league to act hostile or aggressive, is declared a matter of concern and if

about the negative sides to having white critics write on Jazz. This is important because in his writing
Jones discussed music critics not understanding the true meaning of the song. Amiri Baraka s theory
of music critics is correct because it sheds light on how music critics have had a hand in changing
Jazz. In his writing Black Music, Amiri Baraka feels as the Jazz critics are missing the true meaning of
the lyrics and are only viewing one side of the piece and not the deeper meaning. In his writing, Jazz,
the Critics, and American Art Music in the 1920s, Mary Herron Dupree states agree with Baraka when
she states, The discussion of jazz and its relationship to art music began slowly in periodicals in 1921
and by 1924 was intense (288). In other words, Jazz has seen an increase in popularity as the years
have gone by. While the popularity began to increase Jazz culture also began to see new faces. Amiri
Baraka disagrees with the cultural expanding of Jazz music because he feels as though ...the sub
cultural attitudes that produced the music as a profound expression of human feelings, could be
learned and need not be passed on as a secret blood rite (Baraka 13). In other

Benefits Of Mao Zedong
As a result of the civil war in 1927 to 1950, the Communist Party gained political control over China
and defeated the opposing Nationalist Party. This essay will examine and analyze the benefits of Mao
Zedong s leadership of the Communist Party throughout the civil war, such as his influence over the
military and the Chinese people. There is no doubt, however, that other factors such as the opposing
Nationalists corruption, military tactics and relationship with the people all played an even greater role
in ensuring the victory of the Communist Party. It will be argued that while the leadership of Mao
Zedong was a large part of the Communist Party s victory, the failures of Chiang Kaishek s leadership
were crucial to the success of the Communists. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their capabilities of being honest and efficient proved to be wrong, and trust in the Nationalists
success began to crack. After losing half a million troops in Manchuria, and another one and a half
million surrendered or lost, the PLA began to make their way into China, and the defeat of the
government was inevitable. They had lost the confidence of its own troops and its own people .5
Chiang s military mistakes, corruption and incompetence fed the evaporation of the Nationalists
civilian support, and the treatment of the local people was terrible. He refused to undertake land
reforms, and was unable to establish a currency, Chiang Kaishek s government had also morphed from
being a government of the people, to a government of the middle and higher class. He drew support
from the landlords and merchants, and depended on the tax revenue and donations from the small
influential class. This led to money extortion, and corruption.6 The economy also dropped in areas of
China and prices rose, ruining the Chinese middle class. Despite the Nationalist Party still looking

The Man Without A Face Character Analysis
The Man Without a Face
The 1993 movie, The Man Without a Face, is about a former teacher, Justin McLeod, turned painter
who was involved in a fatal road accident that killed a male student who was traveling with him and
severely scarred the right side of his body. After the crash and serving some prison time, McLeod
moved to an Island off the coast of Maine where he leads an isolated life as a painter. The community
avoids McLeod because the physical scars make him ugly and even scary. Additionally, the town
spreads many wrong rumors of him and call him names except for one boy, Chuck Nordstadt. He
gravely needs McLeod s help to pass his admission exams to a military school. At the start of their
encounters, McLeod avoids Chuck because he fears a repeat of the painful past that involved the death
of his student. However, Chuck insistence and persistence to make McLeod his tutor softens McLeod
s stance, and he embraces the idea of tutoring him. Soon, the private tutoring sessions become public
when Chuck skips home one night and is found at McLeod s house the next morning. Later, McLeod
is forced to leave the island to avoid trouble with this community who have always misunderstood
him (Gibson, 1993). Below is an analysis of the film.
The film has several characters, such as McLeod, Chuck (son), Chuck (father), Catherine (Chuck s
mother), Gloria (Chuck s sister), Megan (Chuck s sister), Chief Wayne Stark, Prof. Hartley, and many
more (Gibson, 1993). Of these characters,

My First Trip To Disneyland
Let s get lost in the world of fantasy! Have you ever been somewhere that you enjoyed a lot? A place
where children smile, beaming in bliss and adults flying back to their childhood innocence. A place
where you seem to walk into the movies of your childhood memories, those movies that you watched
hoping to become one of those beautiful princesses or one of those brave heroes. A place that promises
that dreams come true. I remembered my first trip to Disneyland in Tokyo, Japan last year quite well. I
was very fascinated with the Disney s New Fantasyland zone. The zone was full of enchantment, it
was decorated with shops and home of Disney princesses, also there were many interesting rides and
foods related to the theme of each Disney characters. Visiting Disney s Fantasyland zone in Japan
gave me the most memorable and happiest moment that fulfilled my childhood memory and totally
made my dream comes true.
It was a chilling cold windy day on Christmas eve. The winter breeze woke me up and reminded me of
an exciting day to come. My family and I walked down the quiet street under the dark blue sky but my
heart was pounding with excitement. We got off at JR Maihama station and took the Disney resort line
monorail linking to Tokyo Disneyland station. As soon as the monorail door opened, I felt like half of

Teen Suicide And Suicide
Recent studies have shown a rise in both teen suicides and self harm among adolescent girls. Suicide
among adolescent girls may occur as a result of mental disorders, drug misuse, cultural, family and
social situations, genetics, and most of all, cyberbullying (Ehmke). Based on a 2015 study, about 20%
of adolescent girls in the U.S. consider suicide and between 5% and 8% of them attempt suicide each
year (Ehmke). In 2014 alone, 150 girls out of 10 million, between the ages of ten and fourteen,
committed suicide due to cyberbullying among other related factors (Graham). Medical experts warn
that excessive social media and smartphone use may lead to cyberbullying. Most victims of
cyberbullying often experience a great deal of stress and anxiety leading to suicidal ideation (Ehmke).
An analysis by Jean Twenge, in The Atlantic, confirms that cyberbullying is more strongly related to
suicidal thoughts in adolescents than traditional bullying (Twenge). Some estimates suggest that
depending on the country of origin between 5% and 20% of adolescent girls are victims of physical,
verbal or exclusion based bullying, while 15% to 30% of them are victims of cyberbullying (Twenge).
The relationship between cyberbullying and suicide has only been explored in a few studies, but Jean
Twenge s analysis strongly suggests that cyberbullying is a major risk factor for suicide ideation in
adolescent girls (Twenge).
The new analysis by Jean Twenge tests this evidence by reviewing all

Child Rearing Dbq
Child rearing from the 16th to the 18th century changed because the child death rate went up during
this time period. This caused parents to distance themselves from their children until they grew into
adulthood because they just did not know if they were going to survive. Adults did not want to invest
that much time and get to emotionally attached to something that was going to die. These distancing
views caused adults attitudes towards children to change, they began to have such views as severely
disciplining children, wet nursing, and that kids were taught evil or taught to be bad. During this time
adults began to severely discipline their children, they did this in several different ways, by degrading
[their children] and by strik[ing] ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People before this time period thought that children were born evil, and that they automatically were
just as evil as they were going to be when they were older when they were born. However, a change
came about during this time, and people began to believe that children Kn[e]w no evil (Document 6)
at birth, that they were only taught to be evil by the people or events around them. That since children
have yet to experience bad things happening in their life, they know nothing of anything bad. Also
another idea came up during this time that was basically if one teaches their children how to love, and
how to love their parents, and if the parents show the children that they are worthy of that love, they
will respect and obey their parents better. Sir George Savile in 1628 wrote you must begin early to
make your children love you so that they will obey you, (Document 7) showing that if parents would
show their children love, they would earn their obedience. Proving that if a parent loves their child,
they earn their respect, and the theory that children are not born

Women as Instigators of Tragedy in the Works of William...
Women as Instigators of Tragedy in the Works of Shakespeare
It is the very error of the moon;
She comes more nearer earth than she was wont,
And makes men mad. (Othello 5.2.112 14)
The moon is often seen in literature as an allegory for love, virtue, and chastity. In Shakespeare s
comedies, especially, the moon is personified as Diana, the Roman goddess of chastity. In these
comedies, the foolish antics of lovers (literally, lunatics ) usually occur under the auspices of the
chaste goddess, the lovers behaving like hounds about her feet that snap at each other in competition
for her bounty. The moon as allegory for the lunacy of romance helps us understand Shakespeare s
view of romance. In the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The finest example can be found in Othello. Iago convinces Othello that Othello is being cuckolded by
his wife, after which Othello questions him, referring to his wife as the moon:
Why, why is this?
Think st thou I ld make a lie of jealousy,
To follow still the changes of the moon
With fresh suspicions? No; to be once in doubt
Is once to be resolved . . . (3.3.190)
The moon/Desdemona is seen as at once chaste and inclined to change. Later, Othello accuses
Desdemona of infidelity despite her protesting innocence. Again, he compares her infidelity with the
moon: What committed!/ Heaven stops the nose at it and the moon winks . . . (4.2.74). The moon,
once chaste, is now flirting. Similarly, Othello believes that Desdemona, once chaste, is cuckolding
him. These two examples show the multiple allegories of the moon that, similarly, exist in women.
The moon also symbolizes the changeability of Fortune. What does the Fortune have to do with the
moon? Shakespeare considered both of them to be much the same. Both have a cyclical nature (hence
the term, Wheel of Fortune ): the moon waxes and wanes just like Fortune waxes and wanes. John
Hankins noted that the traditional Latin scholarship that Shakespeare may have studied (such as
Macrobius who studied the relationship of the celestial bodies to mortals on earth) would have lead to
his understanding

Stroop Lab Report
Animals surround the human population on a daily basis. Whether this is in the wild, a zoo, or a
household pet. Animals come in variations shapes, sizes, and colors and are generalized by
attractiveness. For example, when putting in cute animals into Google search engine pictures load of
puppies, kittens, bunnies, baby animals, and other animals deemed cute. This attribute is used in
emotional Stroop. The original Stroop test was word and color congruence and incongruence (Stroop,
1935). With this experiment many more have popped up using the general guidelines of the test to
create new Stroop tests.

Although this is not necessary approached on in the present experiment Kahan and Hely show that
there is an interaction between the two independent variables when choosing words for a Stroop task
with lower frequency causing more interference than higher frequencies. This could help in choosing
words to use for this particle Stroop (Kindt and Hely, 2008). The goal of the research is to determine if
the attractiveness of the animal will affect response times in naming words on a screen with an animal
blown up behind it. The question will be tested by setting up two tests one with noninterfering stimuli
and one with interference (i.e. ugly animal with the word cute centered on image). These conditions
will be timed to measure how fast the participants get through each condition. The experiment will be
done with college aged participants of Indiana University or Ivy Tech because of the heavy density in
college aged students in Bloomington, Indiana. The expected results are that it will take longer for
participants to get through the interference condition providing results that attractiveness of animal
affects reaction times for reading words.

Participants The participants in the experiment were either friends or acquaintances who were selected

Running Head: MHE503/MIH523 MODULE 1 CASE ASSIGNMENT MHE503/MIH523 Module 1
Case Assignment: Tsunami Disasters Question 1: Compare the impact between the tsunami in the
Indian Ocean with the tsunami in Hokkaido on the population and infrastructure. Tsunamis are deadly
and destructive natural disasters and have caused huge damages to population in recent history. The
Tsunami of 2004 struck Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand mainly and marginally many other
countries scaled 9.0 on hector scale. Tsunamis can be initiated by many means but this one was
triggered by an earthquake. The coastal cities of areas struck were ruined. In the living history, this
Tsunami is considered the deadliest of all. It is recorded to have killed about two hundred thousand
people (The Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters 2009). The affected areas received
billions of dollars in aids but could not be built again in a day the way they were destroyed. The 2004
Tsunami destroyed the fishery, agriculture, residence and transport system of the affected areas.
Indonesia lost its 70% of fishing fleet of small scale. Thailand lost about 80% of its infrastructure and
got 5,000 fishing vessels damaged. A big portion of coral reeves were lost in Tsunami and even after
that the huge number of cars and concrete walls in the sea kept destroying coral reeves. Since the
population of Indonesia is very high in the region and especially in the coastal areas, the loss was

Preventing A Life Of Regret
Preventing a Life of Regret The ruckus of the crowd pierced the fallen players ears in the form of a
serrated knife. Feeling the blood pulsing through his head caused him to clench his eyes shut in agony
and grab at his hair, hoping to block out the unbearable waves of pain. The blurry forms of his coach
and teammates surrounded his vision and as much as he wanted to get up and tell them that he was
fine, he knew that there was no way that he would be able to recover from this injury easily. He had
known that something was wrong with him, but he had pushed these thoughts out of his mind,
knowing that he could not disappoint his fellow teammates. They had helped him in too many ways
and ignoring the clear symptoms of a concussion seemed like the best way to repay them. Now, he
knew he was wrong, but it was too late. He was going to pay for his decision, either now, or farther on
down the line. A concussion is something that is caused by a hit or blow to the head and is a risk that
all people who play sports have to face, especially people who choose to play football, a sport that
requires courage, strength, and stamina. It is also a sport where choosing to stay in a game, when a
player is clearly injured with a concussion, can determine how the player may live the rest of his life.
Although with teens, the risk of getting a concussion has deadlier consequences and can jeopardize
their future in more ways than one. 1.2 million teens play highschool football and there are

The Major Causes Of The Agricultural Revolution
The Agricultural Revolution began as an idea of how to organize fields known as the enclosure system
to substantially produce food. Because of their colonies in the Americas, the British thrived on new
types of food brought from across the Pacific. Additionally, new technologies such as the ****
furthered the productivity of food production. After the influx of new machinery, food types, and the
enclosure system, Great Britain was able to provide more food for its people which both increased the
population while the amount of labor decreased and lowered the cost of food.
A major effect of the Agricultural Revolution was the cultivation of more food and how the cost of
food lowered. This is due to the way in which the cost of food went down. After this increase of
spending money, people of all classes in Europe were able to afford finer things, such as clothing
which is particularly accentuated in document 7. The statistics in Document 2 depict an increase of the
amount of food and productivity of fields in Britain particularly from 1650 1850. The Agricultural
Revolution lasted from the mid sixteenth to late eighteenth century, supporting the statistics. Clearly,
the amount of money acquired from producing food increased significantly and for a longer period of
time, proving that there was a larger amount of food. In document 3, and author named Arthur Young
described in detail the number of potatoes and other types of food being grown in Ireland. Not only

The Effects Of Gendered Representations On Advertising
The Effects of Gendered Representations in Advertising
This essay discusses the representations of women in media and advertising, including the effects they
have on individuals in society. Firstly, I will review the literature on stereotypical gender roles within
media and advertising. This will include traditional roles such as the housewife, and modern roles
such as the sex object. Secondly, I will critically evaluate and examine the effects of these roles on
women, and even men, in today s society. Effects include body dissatisfaction, thin idealisation and, in
extreme cases, violence against women. Thirdly, I will aim to make conclusions on whether gender
representations and roles within media have impacts on men and women in society.
During the rise of the feminist movement in the late 20th century, a significant body of research
emphasised that media and advertising can affect the behaviours, knowledge and beliefs of
individuals. The mass media can influence attitudes and opinions, either immediately or gradually,
which may shape social norms (Lazarsfeld, 1948, p.249). In particular, researchers have argued that
advertising plays a huge role in affecting the attitudes and behaviours of individuals in society
(Courtney and Lockeretz, 1971, Kolbe and Langefeld, 1991; Harrison and Hefner, 2006; Stankiewicz
and Rosselli, 2008; Ifezue, 2010). Advertising may be referred to as a persuasive and repetitive form
of communication (Panarese, 2014, p.100), which occupies

An Analysis of Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison
One of the most complex and elaborate characters in Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison is
Bone. Throughout the story Bone has to live a life where she thinks that she is the leading mystery of
the trouble being caused. She has numerous unhappy situations and is in no way self satisfied with
herself. She doesn t appreciate who she is physically. She constantly thinks she is the most homely and
dull person who causes the most inconvenience in the family. This sense of selflessness is mainly due
to the physical and sexual abuse brought upon by Daddy Glen, Bone s stepfather. Unfortunately, the
assaults were stretched out over a long period of time, leaving little chance for Bone to recover as an
adult if any at all. I decided to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although some kinds of sexual behaviors are quite common among non abused children (for example,
kissing, touching genitals manually), sexually abused children tend to engage in a greater number of
sexual behaviors than their non abused peers, many of which are developmentally talented and
seemingly imitative of adult sexual activity. Such behavior not only may result in interpersonal
rejection or stigmatization by the victim s peer environment, but also may lead to social sanctions and
punishments when it escalates into the victimization of other children. As adults, survivors report a
greater fear of both men and women. They are more likely to remain single and, once married, are
more likely to divorce or separate from their spouses than are those without sexual abuse histories.
Sexual abuse survivors typically report having fewer friends, less interpersonal trust, less satisfaction
in their relationships, more maladaptive interpersonal patterns and greater discomfort, isolation, and
interpersonal sensitivity. It is said that adults victimized as children may see themselves as unworthy
of relationships with people they consider good or healthy, and that some victims may attempt to gain
mastery over the abuse experience by recreating it in the form of involvement in poor or abusive
relationships. In

Mechanism Of Natural Selection
On this slide we have a more fine approach to the natural selection and its mechanism.
On the left we have a cartoon in which Darwin explains how the natural selection works to a hostile
alien who claims that he would take the Earth in virtue of the survival of the fittest (Spencer, 1864).
This catchphrase was coined by sociologist and biologist Herbert Spencer and actually was used by
Darwin later, but always in the context of the reproductive success (Darwin, 1868). Actually in the
long term the natural selection equals to the reproductive success. If an individual is the strongest but
it cannot leave descendants, his fitness will be 0.
So, in the end, what matters for natural selection is the number of descendants in the long term. If

  • 2. The Legacy of JP Morgan Essay example In 1871, the banking house of Drexel, Morgan Co. was established by John Pierpont Morgan. Twenty four years later it was renamed J.P. Morgan Co., which it was to remain until the firm s purchase by Chase Manhattan in 2000. (Hughes 23) At this point, Chase Manhattan was the largest banking company in the United States. This was a far cry from the 1980 s when Morgan boasted the largest market capitalization of any American bank and was more expensive to buy than Citicorp. (Hughes 11) While J.P. Morgan could not imagine the path banking would take in the U.S. with his passing in 1913; his banking house would have a strong hold on American banking for much of the 20th century. The introduction of bank holding companies and certain laws ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, from an early age, Pierpont s life was scripted for a promising future in banking and business. Although Pierpont did follow the path laid before him, this was not the case for the majority of those born into the same circumstances. Pierpont s generation of wealthy heirs often chose the easy life by simply living off the amassed fortunes of earlier generations. Others, such as the robber barons, accumulated wealth not through inheritance, but by working from the bottom to the top during the Gilded Age (Strouse, 129). Two men fitting a category of rags to riches, and of whom were also connected to Pierpont through business, were Andrew Carnegie and Thomas Alva Edison. In 1869, Junius Morgan became acquainted with Carnegie under the construction and financing of a steel railroad bridge across the Mississippi River. The bridge finally opened in 1874 as the St. Louis Bridge, but due to an ongoing mild depression in the economy, sparse rail traffic used the continental highway. The Morgan s did not waiver in their support for Carnegie, but instead financed future bridges and rail systems as well. With a solid business relationship in tact, Pierpont and Carnegie collaborated again in 1901 to form the world s largest corporation, U.S. Steel (Chambers, 44). • 3. Factors Influenced On Byatt s Works Essay Factors influenced on Byatt s works There are several facts in Byatt s intellectual life which impacts her fiction and nonfiction alike. Nevertheless, the supreme one that constituted the central number of her works remains the influence of one particular Cambridge teacher and literary critic: Franklin Raymond Leavis (1895 1978) who shaped Byatt s view on the moral importance of literature. It stands worth to talk about him, because he not only influenced directly A.S Byatt on the other hand, he formed the entire course of Angelo American 20th century literary criticism, an understanding of which is vital to read Byatt s fiction. In an autobiographical gesture, her fictions often send their heroines to Cambridge. Via the time Byatt went to all female Newnham College, Cambridge, in 1957 to get her B.A., Leavis, then 62, was the ruling intellectual, position he had engaged for 30 years. Leavis, his wife Q.D. (Known as Queenie ) and their circle, which included such critics as I, A, Richards and William Empson, applied great effect on the literary of the day. It stays hard now to imagine Leavis as a radical, since he is so often critiqued for his exclusive and special judgments. However, consider the shape of university life as it was found and then rejected by Leaves when he entered Cambridge immediately after World War I. Until the last decades of the 19th century, taking up the study of literature in the university meant studying the classics that means, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Compare And Contrast Two Different Approaches To Cognitive... Compare and Contrast two different approaches to Cognitive Psychology This essay will be focused on two different approaches to cognitive psychology: Cognitive Neuropsychology and Cognitive Neuroscience. Cognitive Neuropsychology is concerned with the patterns of cognitive performance and emphasis on the cognitive effects of brain damaged patients who suffered lesions, injuries or diseases, providing vest information on normal human cognition. (Eysenck and Keane 2015, p.5) Whereas cognitive neuroscience involves in depth study of our brain and behaviours. As the brain contains numerous neurones and is so complicated, the cognitive neuroscience emphasis on the biological side of the brain and focuses on the lobes that are divided from the cerebral cortex. The main similarity of cognitive neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience is that they are both interested in brain damaged patients and believe that different areas of the brain are highly specialised. For example, one of the main theoretical assumptions of cognitive neuropsychology states modularity , which means the modules in the cognitive system function independently, or separately of each other. (Eysenck and Keane 2015, p.6) In addition, it is also explained that these modules do show domain specificity , meaning the modules responds only to the specific kinds of stimuli but not the others. Compare to cognitive neuroscience, it is believed that modules , as well as hubs are associated with high level ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Tragic Hero in Antigone Aristotle s theories on tragedy were first established during the fourth century in the Poetics, where he defines what makes a tragic hero. Aristotle suggests that a tragic hero is a character who has a high social standing and embodies great nobility in his/her personality. They are neither a villain nor are they entirely good, but a person somewhat like us, raised to a higher position in society. In addition, the downfall of a tragic hero is caused by fault of their own, often through arrogance or pride, as the result of free will. It is triggered by a weakness in their character or an error of their judgment, which is known as their tragic flaw, or hamartia. The tragic hero s misfortune also exceeds the mistake they made, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because Creon is the most responsible for the all the dark turns in this play, he is left to suffer for the consequences for his actions even after death, which exceed his tragic flaw. He had the most to lose, thus evoking feelings of pity and fear in the audience. Creon recognizes his mistake only when he loses it all and it is too late to reverse the consequences of his actions. He undergoes a drastic change of character, supported by his final statements in the play: I have been rash and foolish... Fate has brought all my pride to a thought of dust. In this quote, Creon realizes that he is at fault because he can t control fate and his pride took him nowhere. He even goes as far to admit that he killed his son and wife. The audience feels sorry for Creon because now he is alone and lost all of his pride and glory as king. Creon undergoes much loss because of his tragic flaw and the audience stimulates our pity and fear for him, making him the epitome of a tragic hero. His pride led to his ultimate downfall and he does not comply to Teiresias warning until it is too late. Creon shows all of the characteristics of a tragic hero, from being born into a high social stature to experiencing misfortune that isn t entirely deserved. In the end, the laws of the gods overcome the laws of men, which Creon has failed to see. Creon ends up suffering due to his pride, which teaches an important lesson on ... ON arises due to the inflammation and demyelination of the optic nerve, affecting interpretation of visual signals causing blurred, grey or dim vision. More often than not, ON is monocular in scope however there are cases where both eyes are affected. Vision loss was found to occur steadily over a period of a few hours to a few days, with a peak in between 1 2 weeks, whilst eye pain occurred in 92% of those affected and would worsen through eye movement. These visual defects however would usually resolve itself with care, with the ONTT presenting 56% of participants being clear after one year and 73% cleared after 10 (Cleary et al., 1997). In other cases, a patient may become affected with papillitis (intraocular ON) causing hyperemia leading to the swelling of the optic disc; a point of exit for optic ganglion cells. This area is important for the major blood vessels to supply the retina and thus aid in interpreting visual signals to be passed through the optic nerve into the brain.  ... • 9. Summary Of Claudia Macteer Summary Claudia MacTeer is an adult, telling us about certain events that took place in the fall of 1941. She was a child back then, around nine years old, but she still remembered how the marigolds didn t bloom that fall, and she and her sister thought it was probably because of their friend, Pecola, was having her father s baby. She then tells us that Pecola s father, Cholly Breedlove and the baby are dead. Then there s the first season, a flashback, in Autumn in 1940, a year before the fall when no marigolds were blooming. Claudia and her older sister, Frieda, have just started school. That autumn the Macteers accepted Mr. Henry (Henry Washington) as a roomer because his rent would help pay the bills and also because his former roommate was too addled to keep up. Then the family soon after got another roomer, Pecola Breedlove, an eleven year old, dark skinned girl whom county officials placed her there after her father burned the family s house down. Pecola and the sisters then shared childhood adventures, and what Claudia remembers in particular is the startling onset of Pecola s puberty when she unexpectedly first had her menstruation. The second narrator then talked about the memories of Pecola s family. They described the house where the Breedlove s lived (before Cholly burned it down), they were poor and they believed they were ugly. They also pointed out the horrible relationship between Pecola s parents. Pecola also has a fourteen year old brother, Sammy, who kept ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Analysis Of My Last Duchess In the poems studied, love and death are presented in very different ways. My Last Duchess is a dramatic monologue, which describes the Duke s obsession with his Duchess. Similarly, Do not go gentle into that good night presents love and death as a battle to prevent deaths victory. Remember , in contrast, explores love and death through subverting the sonnet form to guidance on coping with the death of your partner. The title My Last Duchess demonstrates from the outset the Duke s obsession by the use of the possessive pronoun My . Furthermore, the fact that it is a monologue with no other contributory voice exemplifies his need to dominate and possess even the dialogue. The curtain I have drawn for you is an oblique and metaphorical reference to the death of the Duchess not only is he revealing the Duchess s portrait but also the beginning of her end. His need to possess is expressed by I call that piece a wonder, now the use of the word now and piece is significant. It is only when his wife is a portrait that he can admire her and control who looks upon her. The Duchess has been silenced through death. Browning presents love through the obsession of the Duchess and reflects on how death can be caused by this. • 15. Questions On Solving The Statistical Problem The first strategy when solving the statistical problem above is to create a plan to find how many solutions there are for this problem. When starting this plan, the first step is to glean all the relevant clues given in the problem. The important clues described in the statistical problem begin with their only nine people. One person of the nine people has nine pieces of candy. A second person has no candy. Finally, a third person has four pieces of candy because four is the mean and the media of the problem. Gathering information from the data is what Art Costa s calls his first level of Questioning, which is gathering information (Daws Schiro, 2008). Students must have a good understanding of mean, median, and mode before solving this type of statistical problem. Median and mode are often easily found Van De Walle, Karp, and Bay Williams have defined mean in two different conceptual understandings. According to Van De Walle, Karp Bay Williams there are two distinct interpretations for the understanding of mean (2013). The definition of mean is to find the middle number in the set of data. A real explanation is to spread the data evenly across all the data points where each data point is the same as the sum, which is thirty six, refer to illustration 2. Understanding the term mean is crucial when working with statistical problems. • 17. Tinky Winwell Rhetorical Analysis Zumwalt exploits a sardonic tone in order to demolish Farewell´s credibility and spoof his defective reasoning. Utilizing rhetorical questions and litany of children´s characters she proves that the television show ¨Teletubbies¨, despite Farewells commentary, does not encourage children to become gay. If anything, children are most influenced by their family and their actions. The litany of children idols embedded in the satirical argument against Falwell jeopardizes his credibility as a televangelist. He claims that Tinky Winky (from ¨Teletubbies¨), tends to trespass into the female sphere too often causing children who watch it to become gay. Tinky Winky is a character that is ¨purple¨, vacuums, gardens, and is often caught ¨carrying a purse¨. Additionally, the famous children s character has a triangle on top of its head and a rainbow television in place of the stomach both representing gay pride. Moreover, none of the ¨Teletubbies¨ characters are assigned genders. Falwell assumed that Tinky Winky was a male; when ¨he(she?)¨ might be a female. By implementing a rhetorical question of the fictional character sexuality, Zumwalt is able to mock one of the numerous defects in Falwell s accusation: Tinky Winky is a homosexual male. Allowing Zumwalt to disprove his claim, she both logically and comedically gives several examples of beloved children characters and picks out their flaws (physically and mentally) all having a negative impact on the child. • 21. Analysis Of Black Music By Amiri Baraka Jazz was born in New Orleans and has been with us for more than half a century (Helm 1). Jazz has grown popular in the eyes of critics. This makes it easy for many people to have access to it and have their own views tainted by the opinion of others. Amiri Baraka, formerly known as LeRoi Jones, wrote about the negative sides to having white critics write on Jazz. This is important because in his writing Jones discussed music critics not understanding the true meaning of the song. Amiri Baraka s theory of music critics is correct because it sheds light on how music critics have had a hand in changing Jazz. In his writing Black Music, Amiri Baraka feels as the Jazz critics are missing the true meaning of the lyrics and are only viewing one side of the piece and not the deeper meaning. In his writing, Jazz, the Critics, and American Art Music in the 1920s, Mary Herron Dupree states agree with Baraka when she states, The discussion of jazz and its relationship to art music began slowly in periodicals in 1921 and by 1924 was intense (288). Suicide among adolescent girls may occur as a result of mental disorders, drug misuse, cultural, family and social situations, genetics, and most of all, cyberbullying (Ehmke). Based on a 2015 study, about 20% of adolescent girls in the U.S. consider suicide and between 5% and 8% of them attempt suicide each year (Ehmke). In 2014 alone, 150 girls out of 10 million, between the ages of ten and fourteen, committed suicide due to cyberbullying among other related factors (Graham). Medical experts warn that excessive social media and smartphone use may lead to cyberbullying. Most victims of cyberbullying often experience a great deal of stress and anxiety leading to suicidal ideation (Ehmke). An analysis by Jean Twenge, in The Atlantic, confirms that cyberbullying is more strongly related to suicidal thoughts in adolescents than traditional bullying (Twenge). Some estimates suggest that depending on the country of origin between 5% and 20% of adolescent girls are victims of physical, verbal or exclusion based bullying, while 15% to 30% of them are victims of cyberbullying (Twenge). These distancing views caused adults attitudes towards children to change, they began to have such views as severely disciplining children, wet nursing, and that kids were taught evil or taught to be bad. Women as Instigators of Tragedy in the Works of Shakespeare It is the very error of the moon; She comes more nearer earth than she was wont, And makes men mad. (Othello 5.2.112 14) The moon is often seen in literature as an allegory for love, virtue, and chastity. In Shakespeare s comedies, especially, the moon is personified as Diana, the Roman goddess of chastity. In these comedies, the foolish antics of lovers (literally, lunatics ) usually occur under the auspices of the chaste goddess, the lovers behaving like hounds about her feet that snap at each other in competition for her bounty. (3.3.190) The moon/Desdemona is seen as at once chaste and inclined to change. Later, Othello accuses Desdemona of infidelity despite her protesting innocence. Again, he compares her infidelity with the moon: What committed!/ Heaven stops the nose at it and the moon winks . . . (4.2.74). The moon, once chaste, is now flirting. Similarly, Othello believes that Desdemona, once chaste, is cuckolding him. These two examples show the multiple allegories of the moon that, similarly, exist in women. The moon also symbolizes the changeability of Fortune. What does the Fortune have to do with the moon? Shakespeare considered both of them to be much the same. Both have a cyclical nature (hence the term, Wheel of Fortune ): the moon waxes and wanes just like Fortune waxes and wanes. Thailand lost about 80% of its infrastructure and got 5,000 fishing vessels damaged. A big portion of coral reeves were lost in Tsunami and even after that the huge number of cars and concrete walls in the sea kept destroying coral reeves. Since the population of Indonesia is very high in the region and especially in the coastal areas, the loss was much higher than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Preventing A Life Of Regret Preventing a Life of Regret The ruckus of the crowd pierced the fallen players ears in the form of a serrated knife. Feeling the blood pulsing through his head caused him to clench his eyes shut in agony and grab at his hair, hoping to block out the unbearable waves of pain. The blurry forms of his coach and teammates surrounded his vision and as much as he wanted to get up and tell them that he was fine, he knew that there was no way that he would be able to recover from this injury easily. He had known that something was wrong with him, but he had pushed these thoughts out of his mind, knowing that he could not disappoint his fellow teammates. They had helped him in too many ways and ignoring the clear symptoms of a concussion seemed like the best way to repay them. Now, he knew he was wrong, but it was too late. He was going to pay for his decision, either now, or farther on down the line. A concussion is something that is caused by a hit or blow to the head and is a risk that all people who play sports have to face, especially people who choose to play football, a sport that requires courage, strength, and stamina. It is also a sport where choosing to stay in a game, when a player is clearly injured with a concussion, can determine how the player may live the rest of his life. Although with teens, the risk of getting a concussion has deadlier consequences and can jeopardize their future in more ways than one. 1.2 million teens play highschool football and there are ... • 34. The Major Causes Of The Agricultural Revolution The Agricultural Revolution began as an idea of how to organize fields known as the enclosure system to substantially produce food. Because of their colonies in the Americas, the British thrived on new types of food brought from across the Pacific. Additionally, new technologies such as the **** furthered the productivity of food production. After the influx of new machinery, food types, and the enclosure system, Great Britain was able to provide more food for its people which both increased the population while the amount of labor decreased and lowered the cost of food. A major effect of the Agricultural Revolution was the cultivation of more food and how the cost of food lowered. This is due to the way in which the cost of food went down. After this increase of spending money, people of all classes in Europe were able to afford finer things, such as clothing which is particularly accentuated in document 7. The statistics in Document 2 depict an increase of the amount of food and productivity of fields in Britain particularly from 1650 1850. The Agricultural Revolution lasted from the mid sixteenth to late eighteenth century, supporting the statistics. Clearly, the amount of money acquired from producing food increased significantly and for a longer period of time, proving that there was a larger amount of food. In document 3, and author named Arthur Young described in detail the number of potatoes and other types of food being grown in Ireland. Not only does his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Effects Of Gendered Representations On Advertising The Effects of Gendered Representations in Advertising This essay discusses the representations of women in media and advertising, including the effects they have on individuals in society. Firstly, I will review the literature on stereotypical gender roles within media and advertising. This will include traditional roles such as the housewife, and modern roles such as the sex object. Secondly, I will critically evaluate and examine the effects of these roles on women, and even men, in today s society. Effects include body dissatisfaction, thin idealisation and, in extreme cases, violence against women. Thirdly, I will aim to make conclusions on whether gender representations and roles within media have impacts on men and women in society. During the rise of the feminist movement in the late 20th century, a significant body of research emphasised that media and advertising can affect the behaviours, knowledge and beliefs of individuals. The mass media can influence attitudes and opinions, either immediately or gradually, which may shape social norms (Lazarsfeld, 1948, p.249). In particular, researchers have argued that advertising plays a huge role in affecting the attitudes and behaviours of individuals in society (Courtney and Lockeretz, 1971, Kolbe and Langefeld, 1991; Harrison and Hefner, 2006; Stankiewicz and Rosselli, 2008; Ifezue, 2010). Advertising may be referred to as a persuasive and repetitive form of communication (Panarese, 2014, p.100), which occupies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. An Analysis of Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison One of the most complex and elaborate characters in Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison is Bone. Throughout the story Bone has to live a life where she thinks that she is the leading mystery of the trouble being caused. She has numerous unhappy situations and is in no way self satisfied with herself. She doesn t appreciate who she is physically. She constantly thinks she is the most homely and dull person who causes the most inconvenience in the family. This sense of selflessness is mainly due to the physical and sexual abuse brought upon by Daddy Glen, Bone s stepfather. Unfortunately, the assaults were stretched out over a long period of time, leaving little chance for Bone to recover as an adult if any at all. I decided to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although some kinds of sexual behaviors are quite common among non abused children (for example, kissing, touching genitals manually), sexually abused children tend to engage in a greater number of sexual behaviors than their non abused peers, many of which are developmentally talented and seemingly imitative of adult sexual activity. Such behavior not only may result in interpersonal rejection or stigmatization by the victim s peer environment, but also may lead to social sanctions and punishments when it escalates into the victimization of other children. As adults, survivors report a greater fear of both men and women. They are more likely to remain single and, once married, are more likely to divorce or separate from their spouses than are those without sexual abuse histories. Sexual abuse survivors typically report having fewer friends, less interpersonal trust, less satisfaction in their relationships, more maladaptive interpersonal patterns and greater discomfort, isolation, and interpersonal sensitivity. It is said that adults victimized as children may see themselves as unworthy of relationships with people they consider good or healthy, and that some victims may attempt to gain mastery over the abuse experience by recreating it in the form of involvement in poor or abusive relationships. • 37. Mechanism Of Natural Selection On this slide we have a more fine approach to the natural selection and its mechanism. On the left we have a cartoon in which Darwin explains how the natural selection works to a hostile alien who claims that he would take the Earth in virtue of the survival of the fittest (Spencer, 1864). This catchphrase was coined by sociologist and biologist Herbert Spencer and actually was used by Darwin later, but always in the context of the reproductive success (Darwin, 1868). Actually in the long term the natural selection equals to the reproductive success. If an individual is the strongest but it cannot leave descendants, his fitness will be 0. So, in the end, what matters for natural selection is the number of descendants in the long term. If ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
