In our modern world one of our biggest problems is food, or rather a lack of food. To combat this
problem Quorn was developed in 1925. However Quorn only recently became easily accessible to
South Africans. What I aim to achieve with this project is to establish whether Mycoproteins are the
best way forward. WHAT IS MYCOPROTEIN
Mycoproteins are derived from the fungus Fusarium venenatum . This fungus is grown in a
fermentation vat filled with glucose syrup and minerals and vitamins. To maintain growth oxygen is
pumped in, carbon dioxide is removed and the vat is kept at a temperature between 350C to 420C. To
form the all important protein, nitrogen is consistently added to the fungus. The result of all this
optimization is that the fungus can double its mass every five hours.
However even with this fast production rate the fungus must be dried to ~10% water, this was the
main cost in the production of other single cell proteins. Of the dry mass of the fungus approximately
48% is protein with the remainder being fat, carbohydrates and cell wall. Currently the best single cell
protein production system is unibio s u loop technology which converts natural gas into a highly
concentrated, 71%, protein product. The mycoprotein used in Quorn was chosen above the natural gas
system because the hyphae in the fungus are similar in length and width to genuine muscle fibres
which gives the quorn a more realistic meaty texture.

changing, an example of what happens to many women when they become mothers. The first example
that highlights these changes is the landing of the rocket in the backyard: Naomi reacts childishly at
first, but, after the birth of her daughter, she realizes the danger the rocket posed. A second example, is
how Naomi is careless towards a Palestinian man, but after the birth of Sarah, she is much more
cautious. The final example reveals that Naomi s daughter comes before Ben, as seen when Naomi
and Sarah moving back to Canada. Therefore, Naomi s priorities change, as seen in her reaction to the
rocket, her encounter with a Palestinian man, and her moving back to Canada.

than any fictitious villain that they had read of before. This is because Dr. Frederic Wertham dedicated
his career to attacking the negative impact comic books had on its readers. Additionally, he discussed
the atrocious social implications they produced in American culture. Wertham took a similar
viewpoint to Sigmund Freud in that he believed, one s morals are strongly influenced by the society in
which a person lives. With this view, Wertham sought to answer the question; why is juvenile
delinquency rapidly growing in the United States? In order to answer this, Wertham decided to blame
comic books for being the primary cause of the rise in juvenile delinquency in the United States
(Wertham 100). Wertham s attack on comics is as Savage believes, most assuredly a pompous,
polemical, biased, and poorly documented one (Savage 96). In analyzing various comics, William
Savage s book Commies, Cowboys, and Jungle Queens, and an excerpt from Frederic Wertham s book
Seduction of the Innocent, I hold the belief that, although Wertham was melodramatic in his attack on
comic books, he still held a valid argument for the negative role comics played in the United States.

The first symbol, which I thought meant something was towards Maggie and Dee s mom. I was

man was used a lot referring to their Mom, might have meant that she was the man of the house.

I think it might have been a clever way of telling the readers that she did indeed start the fire, which
