West Jest vs Air Canada Essay
How serious is the threat from conventional airlines that want to imitate the westjet culture? What
does it take to imitate organizational culture? Can Air Canada compete against westjet s employee
productivity and its relationship with its employees?
Ever since its establishment in 1996, WestJet has aimed to operate as a low cost carrier while
employing non unionized members in a unique organizational culture. In its simplest form this unique
organizational culture can be labeled as a labor managed firm. In a labor managed firm employees are
owners, and they are affected by the company s performance through profit sharing. Then it should not
be surprising that in labor managed firms, the employees can voice their opinions and actually ...

A labor force in its most basic form, through profit maximizing practices, must be minimized, due to
the cost associated with it, in order to drive up profit. And it is because of this outlook that WestJet has
managed to outperform their competition, for example Air Canada. This theory is in sync with the
findings of Jeffery Pfeffer in his 1995 paper Producing sustainable competitive advantage through the
effective management of people.
As described above, the organizational culture, the foundation of WestJet s success, is heavily
weighted on its people. Where as the competition, sees the workforce as a cost and aims to minimize
it, WestJet looks at their work force as an asset and an investment. Conventional airlines run their
business as any other company. They look out for the shareholder s best interest and do not pay the
slightest attention to their workforce. In WestJet s culture, the workforce consists of the shareholders
due to profit sharing and co operative environment. By nature capital managed firms will have a hard
time converting to labor managed firm. They will have to change a lot of rules and regulations that
governs their everyday operations. They will face a large number of opposition by their shareholders.
According to Fernandez Guadano (2009) even if they do manage to adopt similar practices as labor
managed firms, they will never be able to achieve the same rate of employee ownership and profit
sharing as their counterparts,

Villanova Research Paper
With two titles in the past three years, the Villanova Wildcats are on their way to becoming a dynasty.
Since the end of John Wooden s UCLA coaching tenure in 1975, only twice has a school won two
times in the span of three years. These were Duke s early 90 s teams of Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, and
Christian Laettner, and Florida s 2006 2007 teams of Joakim Noah, Al Horford, and Corey Brewer,
meaning the Wildcats have joined elite company. Once known as a top team during the regular season
who would flame out in March, Jay Wright s most recent teams have shattered that belief.
Villanova has always prided itself on continuity and developing players within their system. In the era
of one and done basketball, where over 200 underclassmen have declared for the NBA Draft in the last
five years, Villanova has been largely immune. Although they lost four underclassmen this year,
including National Player of the Year Jalen Brunson, Villanova is perfectly positioned for another title
run. It s not a bad thing when Villanova s youngest team in years is still projected finish within ...

Their top four scorers are gone to the NBA. Had Donte Divincenzo and Spellman, who were both
considering returning, stayed, they would have been ranked 1st. Only Eric Paschall and Phil Booth
remain from the starting lineup, and they combined for only 20 points this past year. They are solid
players, but neither of them are studs. But Jay Wright has dealt with this before. Jalen Brunson went
from a 9.6 PPG player as a freshman to almost 19 as a junior. Donte Divincenzo had an 11 PPG uptick
in only 2 years as well. Even when it seems as if Villanova is in trouble, the next man always steps up
and produces for Wright s team. And Booth and Paschall are not alone. Would anyone be surprised if
Collin Gillespie or Dhamir Cosby Roundtree, two freshmen who usually rounded out Wright s 8 man
rotation, became key contributors in their second

Which Army Leader Win A Better Battle Plan Essay
Throughout the ages of history, there were many wars that were fought. For every victory and defeat,
what was it that really determined the outcome of the war? Which army leader had the better or worse
battle plan? With the plan they had, did it increase their chances of victory? Were there key factors in
an army leader s plan that lead to their defeat? Or, was the best decision made to completely avoid
war? For a lot of the wars that took place and the ones that were avoided many years ago, the mystery
still remains unsolved on how and why certain army leaders were victorious or gained a certain
advantage because of the choices they made. On the other hand, it is also unknown on how or why an
army leader failed to a certain extent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was a tactic in attempts to keep the enemy guessing and to cause the enemy to feel threatened and
unsafe. It was a good strategy to trick the enemy into always thinking and feeling that an attack would
happen at any given moment, something that would cause the enemy to develop stress or become
restless with less chances of obtaining a sense of peace or assuming that an attack was not going to
happen. If one was able to master the technique of deception, then it was likely that one will increase
the chances of victory. In addition, it was crucial to become aware and analyze the enemy in order to
determine if a planned and deceptive attack would work. Or, it was better to avoid confrontation if it
was determined that the enemy would be stronger. Sun Tzu took into consideration that pacifism was
also an important option which would benefit future and better planned attacks. He also made it clear
from the beginning of his documentation that he took analytical measurements into account and the
one that made more precise calculations than the enemy, one will win the war. Another significant
lesson on warfare and leadership put forth by Sun Tzu was having the ability to conquer areas with no
fighting at all. This lesson also involved the ability to absorb and expand within an area instead of
total domination and annihilation. Sun Tzu mentioned, In the practical art of

Preservation. It s something that many people over the centuries have done to keep pieces of history
intact so it won t be forgotten. Sometimes it s to let future generations know about how life was in
their era, the good times or the struggles. Or sometimes it s used in a fun way, such as a time capsule.
Time capsules are a box type thing that you place in the ground, and when a certain number of years
go by you can up it back up to reflect on the times that happened during the time the item was put
inside. Others do this to have someone one day in the future find it to show how things were now.

only the Flaming Hot Cheeto, they have Flaming hot popcorn, XXXtra Flaming Hot, Flaming Hot

Violent Video Games And Violence
Are violent video games directly correlated to teen violence? This is the burning question many
researchers are dedicated to answering. The common form of the question is Is the increase in
violence in games creating killer kids? The simple answer is no. Instead the opposite has occurred, as
games became more violent, the players became calmer. The games create a safe outlet for any anger
or angst that young people possess. Crime rates in the teen population have lowered and violent teens
admit to having little to no interest in violent video games. The games that most people fear are
destroying the youth may actually be one of the things helping them grow and become normal
members in society. Games have been proven create a safe environment for players to release anger
causing a decrease in real world aggression. A study published in Journal of Adolescent Health found
that young people, especially boys use games as a way to manage emotions. 61.9% of boys played to
help me relax, 47.8% because it helps me forget my problems, and 45.4% because it helps me get my
anger out, the article reports. The games have become a kind of stress ball with a storyline. The game
creates a safe environment by allowing the player to have violent interactions within a false, non
harmful medium. No real world is performed keeping everyone safe. Also as more games include
violence, more kids learn to use it as a coping mechanism. Another statistic that breaks the suspected

Wage Gap Men Vs Women
The wage gap is the difference between what men and women are paid solely based on their gender.
Women are paid less than men in virtually every job category tracked by the bureau of labor statistics.
Women are paid less than men even when factors such as schools, grades, and majors are taken into
account. Official data from the government even states that women make seventy four cents for ever
dollar that men make. In 2015, u.s. women working full time were only payed eighty percent of what
full time men earned. The highest wage gap in the country occurs in Louisiana. Throughout a
Louisiana woman s career, she loses out on about $671,840 that could have been earned if she was a
man. Florida, however has the smallest wage gap (not taking race

How Does Steven King Create Suspense
Individual Study
Compare the ways Steven King in The Shining and William Friedkin in The Exorcist use techniques
to create suspense.
Steven King in his 1977 novel The Shining and William Friedkin in his 2001 film The Exorcist
establishes that suspense can be created in many forms while both being equally effective in its own
right. Although the characters are faced with a horrific dilemma in two very different settings, the
techniques used to create suspense can be similar. In both texts suspense is produced through
characterization, narrative structure and foreshadowing to create a state of anxious uncertainty for
what may happen. While the characters within The Shining are placed in a traditional horror setting,
where they are isolated. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Overcome with rage Karras takes the demon with him through a window and down the grey stair way,
ultimately defeating it.
In The Shining the hotel is mentioned within the first chapter, as Jack is being interviewed. However,
it is only until chapter 4 that the reader is allowed a glimpse of the terrible things to come. Delaying
the suspense allows for proper character development which will prove important in the long run. The
word REDRUM, as stated previously was shown in chapter 4, it is a key word in the book that is
repeated countless of times. Every time this key word appears it is accompanied by fear, Danny s fear.
By introducing it so early into the story it pushed the reader to ponder the words meaning and because
of its sinister association every time it was brought up more suspense was built up. It is later revealed
that it was murder spelled in reverse. In both texts the authors use an anti climax principle that is
highly effective in creating suspense in the viewer. It works for a system of false alarms followed by
the real danger. An example of this is during Jacks possession and he remembers that he had forgot to
dump the boiler. There is a race against the clock to save the hotel, which is already building up
suspense with questions of will he make it. As he dumps the boiler it seems that he had got there in
time, this in turn takes the tension away from the reader until suddenly the hotel blows. This is a good
example of how suspense is used to create

Video Games Can Never Be Art By Roger Ebert
In today s culture, we tend to distance ourselves from what we think art is and what the real meaning
of art is. The world we know is what we call our reality . Reality shows us art can be everything we
see, hear, taste, touch, smell. Art is everything from what we really think and imagine. Art can be
defined as something that cannot really be expressed through words. Art means different things to
different people, which makes it difficult for art to be clearly defined. Art can be a painting but it can
also be an idea expressed through a play. Art has many forms and we as humans put a sign on it
depending on how it makes us feel and what it means to us. Art is within everyone and our values that
motivate us as people and the goals we set are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I also shared with you my opinion of why video games from Eberts claim saying its not. Now I show
you my understanding of Ebert s narrow definition of art. Look I totally get it Mr. Ebert, we have
some pretty lofty ideas of what qualifies as art and you are absolutely right in what you were
classically trained to view cinema as an art form. I completely get that you are good at what you do
best. You really get the spirit of art here that you established in your article with your understanding.
In the world of art, there are many different forms such as cubism, symbolism, impressionism, graffiti,
modernism, and now we have pixel and digital art. Some art forms are surprising to the eye and mind
as being art such as a VanGogh painting or recycled plastic bottles molded into an odd shape. While I
may not appreciate those pieces, they are art to the creator. Who would I, or you, be to diminish that
opinion? Also, I agree with your claim on saying Video games have goals, rules, challenges and
interactions . The reason why I agree with you on this claim is because every time people make video
games it has components that consists of rules, challenges and interactions that makes game fun to
play. But at the same time, video games are much more than that. Coming from the main issue, why is
it disingenuous to not just turn around and apply that to video games? Why do you still think the

Will light beyond red give off more heat than visible light?
Hypothesis
Yes, as the wavelength of the light increases, the light will be hotter. Red has the longest wavelength
on the visible light spectrum, so invisible light just beyond red would have a longer wavelength.
Observations
The temperature of the area just beyond the red light was consistently the highest (if sometimes tied
with the temperature in the yellow or blue light) of the four temperatures. The temperature in the
yellow light was the second highest, then blue, then the one in the shade.
The thermometer just beyond red and the thermometer in the yellow light both recorded the highest
temperature, which was 42 degrees Celsius. The thermometer in the shade recorded the lowest
temperature in the entire experiment, which was 19 degrees Celsius. ... Show more content on

The thermometer in the infrared light took consistently higher temperatures than the thermometers in
the blue light, the yellow light, and the shade. One can also conclude that light gives off heat in the
first place, as the thermometer in the shade took the lowest temperatures. Finally, on the spectrum
from blue visible light to infrared light, it appears that the longer the wavelength, the hotter the light.
Sunlight still has heat energy beyond the visible light spectrum, as seen in this experiment. The
infrared radiation just beyond red gives off more heat than light on the visible light spectrum based on
the data from this experiment.
Procedural Analysis
While conducting the experiment, it was difficult to line up the prism with the sunlight so that the ends
of the thermometers could rest only in one color of

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Biometrics
There are many biometric techniques in existence today. Face recognition technology is one of them
which make use of computer software to determine the identity of the person. Today conservative
methods of identification like possession of certain type of identity cards, use of passwords etc. are not
at all reliable for identity purposes where security is a critical factor. There is no surety in the fact that
person using ATM card to withdraw money from any ATM machine is actual owner of the card. When
credit and ATM cards are lost or stolen, it is not a big game for the unauthorized user to make an
accurate guess of the correct personal codes. It is a common practice between we people that despite
of strict warning we continue to choose easily guessed PIN s and passwords. Often we prefer our
birthdays, cell numbers, house numbers and vehicle numbers. Identity cards can be lost, fake or
misplaced and passwords can be forgotten or compromised. But a face is unquestionably connected to
its owner. Face does not suffer the limitations of been borrowed, stolen or easily copied. Face

The History of Global Climate Change Essay
Earth has experienced many episodes of dramatic climate changes with different periods in earth
history. There have been periods during which the entire planet has been covered in ice and at another
time it has been scorchingly hot and dry. In this regards, earth has experienced at least three major
periods of long term frigid climate and ice ages interspersed with periods of warm climate. The last
glacial period which current glaciers are the result of it, occurring during the last years of Pleistocene,
from approximately 110,000 to 10,000 years age (Clayton, 1997). Indeed, glaciers present sensitive

Remote sensing has become a very valuable tool for documenting the response of glacier to changing
climate (Bamber and Kwok, 2003; Kuhn, 2007; Pellikka, 2007; Solomon et al, 2007) because the
rugged terrain, inaccessibility and legendary poor weather of glacier areas has resulted in relatively
few field based studies. Indeed, in order to use glaciers and their changes as indicators of climate
change, or as an early warning signal for sea level rise, remote sensing is the only tool to provide
glacier change information from all the continents and from a large number of glaciers and ice sheets.
On the other hands, because space borne and airborne remote sensing data provide superior cost
effective and area effective data and methods for monitoring the glaciers and their changes, part of this
monitoring can be carried out by it. Glacier topography is one of the most important parameter to
monitor as it is a key to glacier volume and glacier mass balance studies using the geodetic method.
Topography of glacier can be mapped using various data types such as terrestrial photography, aerial
photography, digital camera data, airborne radar data, satellite radar data (SAR), very high resolution
satellite imagery and laser scanner data. By means of interferometric processing DEM could be

The Death Of A Fetus
Women are faced with a myriad of choices on a daily basis. Whether they are superficial, like how she
dresses or where she goes out to dinner, and others can be more life altering, like career she pursues
and the relationships she chooses to have. One choice that women should be able to make for herself
is what she chooses to do with her reproductive organs. A woman should be able to choose for herself
whether or not she will have an abortion, yet there are so many other people who think they know
better, whether that be government or the overly vocal Pro Life protestors sticking their nose in
someone else s privates.
Abortion, by definition, is the intended termination of a pregnancy that results in the death of a fetus
or embryo. This deliberate medical procedure can be done in two distinctive ways, mainly hinging on
how long the woman has been pregnant. A medical abortion is one that is done through prescription
medications while being closely monitored by a medical professional. According to Planned

Buying vs Leasing
Executive Summary
What would be the best option for a company to lease or purchase equipment? Each business owner s
situation is different. The decision to buy or lease business equipment is unique. It must be made on a
case by case basis. Leasing equipment preserves capital giving the business more flexibility. While
leasing can be good in the short run it can cost you more in the long run. We will look at the
advantages and disadvantages of leasing. My research will look at the different options a company
faces if they lease or buy and why it has become more attractive to lease.
First let s start by describing the basic concept of a lease. Some leases are merely rentals, whereas
others are effectively purchases. FASB classifieds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like house, then, buying is cheaper than renting in the long term.
While leasing has both advantages and disadvantages. Let s take a look at the disadvantages. The lack
of ownership would be a main disadvantage. You are obligated to make payments and when a lessee
encounters financial distress, the lessor typically becomes its largest creditor. If a lessor decides to
reduce exposure and recall its leased aircraft, an airline can no longer operate. Lessors require
payments for all aspects of airplane utilization and rent, meaning maintenance reserves and so on. The
cash flow becomes much tighter while if they own their own jets they have much more flexibility.
According to Boeings Zolotusky, it comes down to two basic considerations, the quality of the aircraft
involved and the customer involved.
Businesses can change operations and it may be expensive and difficult to terminate a lease before the
end of the term. If the business owns the property it might be easier to sell and make money rather
than losing all of its assets and getting nothing in return. In some cases of leasing when it s time to
renew the owners might demand higher rental payments putting the lessee at a disadvantage.
Lessors offer a very sensible business proposition. For airlines that want to be primarily airlines, it s a
very attractive and efficient service. If the operators want to focus on the service of getting people on
planes,

Nurture The Reason It Has The Most Influence On Humans
Nurture the reason it has the most influence on a humans up bringing Humans are programmed to
carry out physical, mental and emotional developments, but what has the most influence on a human
upbringing and what shapes humans behaviour? Is is nurture which is the environment that we are
raised/socialization and our culture. Nurture the positive encouragement, from a parent or caregiver
towards the physical, mental and behavioural development of a individual. Or is nature your
biological factor/genes that a human obtain from their mother and father. As we go through life we go
through different developmental stages from infancy, adolescence/teenager through to adulthood.
Humans depend on the nurturing from our caregivers, and social groups to help us achieve our
developmental stages successfully, and contributes to a human behaviour. This why i feel that
nurturing has the most influence on a humans upbringing. Humans depend on the nurturing from
parents/caregivers to teach them independence, confidence, to have good self esteem and positive
behaviour. Humans learn through experience by what we see, hear and are taught though our culture
and our environment. Not every human in the world are raised the same, this makes everyone develop
and behave in different ways.. Not one human is the same. Nurturing help influence humans and the
way they behave and act towards other. This contributes to how human behaviour is shaped. Erik

Upon opening the book, and beginning to read the first chapter, it felt as though the author was
introducing me to the book as if in real life. The author spoke as if he wasn t telling the story, but
instead preparing you for the story. The fact of the matter, is that he was doing both. Calvino was
preparing the reader for the first story of the book by listing the best ways to read a book by removing
any distractions and getting comfortable. Reading this was very hard going, as the first chapter to me
it read like a set of stereo instructions and it made me think I don t need to be told the best way read a

This is quite mis leading at the time because we presume that what we are reading is actually the
words that have been written by the author, but is in fact the perspective of the reader reading the book
and taking an active role in the book. However, this is not so much noticeable in this first story as it
does read like a normal book. As the book progresses we begin to realise that the tone used is the
reader s perspective. To me, this is not particularly amusing but very confusing, but looking at it from
Calvino s point of view it is amusing to think that he is playing a joke on the reader and constantly
`spinning out the reader. Unfortunately though, we can never be really sure what the author s true
intentions were when writing the book. The first story of the book is about someone who is travelling.
He arrives at the train station and goes into the station bar where he hears about the lives of the locals.
These locals apparently seem to lead predictable lives, as a couple of the locals are placing bets on the
actions of the other locals when they arrive at the bar. This is the very first hint of the repetition within
the book (if I am not reading into things too much). I find it funny, as I ve often done this myself with
friends, and it reminds me of being able to predict the reactions of certain people when certain events
arise. Within the book there is a lot of repetition which can be

The Bachelorette Episode 6, Review: Unexpected Elimination, First Kiss and Catfight Make Week Six
Interesting The sixth week on The Bachelorette turned out to be quite an exciting watch as there was
enough of fun, drama and emotion. It started off with JoJo and the eight guys traveling to Argentina.
Chris announced that things are being switched up this week and there will be a second two on one
date along with a regular one on one and group date. And so, the one on one date began with JoJo
picking Wells and he was clearly asked to kiss her. His date card read: If you don t kiss me on this date
you re going home. And thus, Wells gave his first kiss, which made JoJo cheer for him. However, it

Propagand The Sacco And Vanzetti
A person s hatred of others is created by lies in over exaggerations. America has been known as the
land of the free, home of the brave, and the great melting pot of the world. With mixes here and there or
so it seems. In reality the streets of America were divided. Italians here, Greeks over there, Blacks
here, Asians there. It was always us against them mindset that has plagued the American society
causing people to label those not like them as dark and evil. The power of the news, radio, and movies
seeded the hatred and fear toward those who were not American meaning immigrants, second
generations, and or African Americans. Propaganda is what it was called the spread of exaggerated

For instance the Ku Klux Klan with the background of being just a silly social club . This clan was
started by six Confederate soldiers because of their boring job with daily lives. Was and still is known
to be the oldest terrorist group. This all began in December 1865 when the six man was sitting in a law
office in Pulaski, Tennessee (Heinrichs 8). All of these men were inserted deep in boredom so they
started a social club. When they started they wanted to become secret and mysterious leading them to
invent secret handshakes and passwords. No one outside of this call was to share the names of the
members or passwords. They came up with the name Ku Klux it was based on the greek word Kyklos

ghosts of the dead Confederate soldiers. Slowly the clan got bigger giving them a sense of power so
with this they wanted to make the laws they found fit(Heinrichs 8). White Americans saw African
Americans as a threat to their lifestyle as others feared African Americans will take revenge for their
lives in slavery. So buttons hunting terrors in former slaves was justified. While time of reconstruction

Examining The Factors That Influence Eyewitness Testimony
Eyewitness testimony is the account of the witness of a certain event or incident. Throughout, the
witness is enforced to provide their experience to the court in order to take legal action towards the
incident. It is considered a very useful tool in courts. Yet, such a way to find out the truth is unreliable
as many witnesses fail to contribute in a positive way to grant courts accurate data of the incident.
This essay will be discussing the factors that influence eyewitness testimony including age, weapon
focus, stress, or the leading questions asked in court.
When a witness perceives a complex event, a number of factors, such as the exposure time, or the
salience of the event, or the witness s prior expectations, will affect the accuracy of what is perceived
and stored in memory (Loftus, 1996). To Begin with, Loftus has explained how the duration between
when the witness has to talk to the officials and the event can be such a crucial period. Humans
usually forget rapidly after an event and time will make one forget more gradually. Moreover, one s
memory isn t functioned in a way in which a video of events will stay in mind. A proof was made
through Loftus experiment in 1975 where he showed the witnesses a film of a multiple car accident
then added in the questionnaire having a stop sign where they all agreed that there was one. Yet,
statistics have shown that not mentioning the object would cause only 35% to claim there was one
considering the accident lasted 4

Natural Objects Used Convey A Symbolic Meaning
Natural Objects used to convey a Symbolic Meaning
Percy Shelley was a writer during the Romantic Era, often known for his lyric poetry. In lyric poetry,
the mood is often musical and emotional, often represented in rhythm and rhyme (Portnoy). The writer
of a lyric poem uses words that express his state of mind, his perceptions, or his feelings. Shelley
composes lyric poetry that makes use of the language, imagery, and metaphors to represent a symbolic
meaning of the object he is addressing in each poem (Portnoy). Shelley often uses concrete images in
his poetry to convey an abstract idea. Shelley uses natural objects to represent a symbolic meaning
throughout Mont Blanc, Hymn to Intellectual Beauty, and Ode to the West Wind. In Mont ... Show

Shelley uses the way water flows through a riverbank to symbolize the way our thought flows through
our mind The source of human thought its tribute brings, Of water, with a sound of half its own, Such
as a feeble brook will oft assume, In the wild woods, among the mountains lone, Where waterfalls
around it leap for ever (Shelley 871). Thoughts rush into the mind filling the brain, similarly as water
rushes down a riverbank, filling the riverbank until it can hold no more. Within this mind human
thought brings its tribute, that is, giving the external world what it owes to it, like a brook flowing as a
tributary into a mighty river (Portnoy). The beginning of the second stanza, Shelley states Thus thou,
Ravine of Arve dark, deep Ravine Thou many coloured, many voice vale (Shelley 871) to further
symbolize the way our thoughts flow through our mind, just as the River of Arve flows through this
ravine. Shelley turns from his own private inward musing to look at the scene in front of him, the
ravine of the River Arve at the foot of Mount Blanc (Portnoy). Shelley uses the many colours
reflecting off the River Arve Thou many colour, many voice vale (Shelley 871) to symbolize the way
our many different memories can affect the thoughts within our minds. The final line of the fifth
stanza ends the poem by questioning the vacancy found in silence and solitude And what were thou,

Sources of Mercury and Health Effect
Sources of Mercury and Health Effect
Mercury is a naturally occurring element found in the earth s crust that can be found as the elemental
or metallic mercury or in many organic and inorganic compounds. Mercury is a metal that when at
room temperature is a silvery liquid metal and is often called one of the heavy metals. Mercury can
evaporate like water, and become airborne. It is an element that does not break down into a less toxic
substance. Once mercury escapes into the environment it will continue to circulate in and out of the
atmosphere until it ends up at the bottoms of lakes and oceans. It cannot be created or destroyed
(UWM, 2004). The most common or leading source of mercury in the environment is atmospheric
deposition. Once mercury has reached the atmosphere it can circulate for years which make up for the
extensive distribution in the environment. The natural sources that contribute to atmospheric mercury
are volcanoes, geologic deposits of mercury, weathering of rocks and volatilization from the ocean.
Rocks, sediments, water and soil also naturally contain small amounts of mercury; scientists have
even found some local mineral occurrences and thermal springs that are natural high in mercury
(USGS, 2009). Secondary sources of mercury result from burning fossil fuels and smelting metals.
Mercury is also a by product of gold and zinc mining. Mercury is also found in many rocks one of
them being coal, when coal is burned in power plants the mercury is

2000, the United Nations developed an initiative to make businesses more socially responsible. It is
called the United Nations Global Compact, or U.N.G.C. for short and it has 10 principles that are
categorized into 4 groups. Human rights, labor practices, the environment, and anti corruption policies
summarize the 10 principles that businesses should follow. Since its inception 15 years ago, more than
12,000 participants from all over the world have agreed to follow the U.N.G.C. s principles
(Participants and Stakeholders). So, where does Abercrombie Fitch fit into all of this? In order to fully
evaluate the business practices of Abercrombie Fitch, or A F for short, we need to see if they are a part
of the U.N.G.C. initiative, and what Abercrombie and Fitch says they are doing versus what they
actually are doing. After pointing out issues with Abercrombie and Fitch s practices for the last 15
years, it s also important to look at the effect these practices are having on the company s bottom line.
Out the 12,000 participants that have joined the U.N.G.C., more than 8000 of them are business
(Participants and Stakeholders). Abercrombie and Fitch is not one of them. Does this mean that

The State s Electoral System
POLI 201: Electoral Reform in Canada
Kelsey Dechant
UCID 30012085

TA: Camilo Torres, T03
The format of a state s electoral system plays a foundational role in the quality of its democracy.
Illiberal democracies, for example, may limit potential opponents of the ruling party; these kinds of
states are generally said to be less democratic than those which encourage political freedom. Because
a nation s electoral structure influences the nature of its democracy, one must take a critical view on
current systems and seek to better them where possible. Though not an extreme example, the electoral
system in Canada can be said to hinder democracy, albeit indirectly, leading to apathy and discontent
amongst the electorate. In a disproportionate system such as Canada s, citizens voices are not as easily
or accurately represented. For this reason, it is of utmost importance to consider electoral reform so
that Canada s system is more proportionate and conducive to political engagement. Canada s current
electoral arrangement is known as a single member plurality or first past the post system. In this
system, the basis of seat distribution is who has the most votes during an election. For example, a
candidate who wins 34 percent of the popular vote will go on to represent a riding, even if the rest of
the votes go to two or more different parties. Plurality systems increase government stability and
effectiveness using a manufactured majority

Orwell s, Animal Farm conveys the concepts like loyalty can be rewarded, all power corrupts and fear
is more influential than love. These key features clearly express that power can devise influential
actions, which has been mentioned many times throughout the novel. The techniques like
personification, irony, foreshadowing, conflict, figurative language, point of view, symbolism and

With a heavy increase in the number of online trading account holders, which rose from 20 million in
2012 to nearly 24 million in 2014, the IT sector has realized the potential that is available to exploit.
Also, with internet continuously reaching sky high numbers in terms of consumers, the nature of the
financial services has dramatically changed. Online trading accounts removed the need for
maintaining the necessary trading documents and certificates as an alternate trouble free path via the
internet.
But, the users were still unaware of what to buy, when to buy, what to sell and when to sell. The users
needed a trustworthy source that could offer them the information on trading and profitability of their
transactions. The financial portals became this source as they offer the users with recent trends of the
stock market, real time data and a number of other tools and facilities that help users in making a
better decision in terms of profitability. The data available on financial portals gave the users an
insight into the trading practices. Some portals provided online advisory, which supported the facts
and figures while some enabled the user tools to conclude his own trading market research and end the

Episode Of Doctor Who Or Phil Of The Future
It s completely inevitable to switch through dimensions with such simplicity. I mean, unless you re in

kids, we often think about getting in a time machine and flying through time, like endng up in the year
3000 or even way back in the dinosaur era. The whole aspect of it really seems fun when you expect
everything to go your way. Unless, of course, you re me, Camryn Matthews. On that bright Saturday
afternoon, everything was going great. Work was going smoothly and my friends were coming over
that night. Everything was going just as I planned. I was basically the type of girl to want everything
to go my way, but not in the super obnoxiously bratty way; in the stubborn way. Going out with my
girls was going to be a huge hit. Despite the fact that there is nothing to actually do in our town in
Florida, we are determined to make it one. As time rolled by, I was finally out the door; walking
unsteady while still trying to accomplish putting my heels on correctly. This was about to be the best
time of my life, or so I thought. Around 1 AM, my life changed in ways no one could imagine. Being
rolled down the hospital hallway, I had no clue what was going on. Shaking and trembling, I was
covered in blood. I asked the doctor, yet got no response. I slowly reached up to feel the back of my
head, curious as to what I would find, and there it was; an oversized, bloody hole. I

Taking a Look at Neurotransmitter Release
Neurotransmitter release is a key step to neuro transmission, in the middle of the 20th century; it has
been clearly revealed that chemical signals transfer the great majority of the information in the brain.
Therefore, different neurochemistry approaches have been emerged to investigate neurotransmitter
release process. Later, introducing a radiolabeled precursor into the CNS and measuring the
accumulation of a radiolabeled product have made critical improving and developing in vitro
preparations approaches including isolated nerve ending fractions or synaptosomes, cultured cells and
tissue slices. However, in this study we focused on the use of brain slices, as well as intact structure
giving a close picture of th in vivos situation. The tissue slice method was introduced by Warburg in
1920s to investigate the energy metabolism of tissues slice and Henry McIlwain extended it to study
brain metabolism. Currently, slices structure is an accepted technique for studying many aspects of
neurobiology. Slices are made using a mechanical device, such as a tissue chopper or vibrato me.
Subsequently, they are immediately transferred into cold carbongenated iso osmotic salt solution.
Tissue slices are used with and without radiolabeled tracers dependent on the case of studies.
Subsequently they are transferred into small chamber and superfused 1 hour with fresh carbongenated
medium to achieve stability. Following equilibration slices can then be exposed to chemical and/or

business. Consumer behavior, current market trend awareness and the competitors will enable you to
find a opportunity and run a business that fulfils the consumers desires and needs. Its also allows
company to spot current trends in past scenario and what may will come in the future which will help
a company to become more prepared and able to reduce gaps and other chances in the market. To
communicate with consumers, suppliers and other stake holder s business decision can reduce risk.
Business decision lets company to measure their performance and gives clear view what customers
really expect from company.
There are two types of data primary data and secondary data. In primary data we can collect by doing
interview, survey and questionnaire and the secondary data we can get the information about the
product by its past records, magazine or news papers. The process used to gathering data information
and data for the purpose of making business decision.
The methodology includes questionnaire, interviews, surveys and other research techniques and could
include both present and past information. There are so many types of methods and technique in
market to do research for a product but in our project we all decided to do research by quantitative
method because by quantitative method

The World Of Puerto Rico Essay
Boriqua! is a commonly used term among the people of Puerto Rico when referring to themselves or
their country. Puerto Rico, formerly known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is a U.S. Territory.
It is a small island, only 100 miles long and 35 miles wide, located in the Caribbean Ocean. It is about
1,000 miles off the tip of Florida in between the Dominican Republic and the Virgin Islands. The
climate is tropical and mild with little variation in the seasonal temperature. The country is composed
of one large island and many smaller islands. Puerto Rico is home to 3.6 million people, and its capital
city San Juan is home to almost 400,000 people. Spanish and English are the two main languages
spoken. The country is one of few in the world that is officially bilingual (NationFacts). The term
boricua is linked with Puerto Rico s native heritage. The word comes from Boriken, the Taíno word
for the island (NationFacts), the Great Land of the Valiente and Noble Lord (prfdance.org).
The population of Puerto Rico is a mix of culture and ethnicities, whose origins can be traced back to
native Taino, Spanish and West African roots. On Columbus second voyage to the New World in 1493,
the Spaniards came across the island of Puerto Rico. At that time the island was populated by peaceful
indigenous people called the Taino indians (prfdance.org). The Taino welcomed the Spaniards, but the
Spaniards treated them severely. Due to the slave labor conditions and new European diseases

Invest In Driverless Cars
Driverless cars have long been in debate since Google made its announcement for an autonomous car.
Although driverless cars are feared because they may cause more accidents, the first autonomous car
accident was at the fault of a human. The advancements that driverless cars offer to modern
technology and its potential market deems itself more beneficial than not. Therefore, automobile
manufacturing companies should invest in driverless cars.
Autonomous cars would be labeled as a disruptive innovation since its implementation could lead to a
lower demand for normal cars. This never before seen technology may very well be the new hit thing
thus also making it a radical innovation. A similar effect can be seen through the creation of

Companies often face cultural lock in, or essentially the fear of change. One reason that Kodak has
failed had been that it failed to commercialize its film technology due to its inability to adapt to the
growing technology. However, the manufacturer could bring in additional expertise to gain more
insight on the profitability of the technology and train employees of its uses. Additionally, the
manufacturer could assess the demand for driverless cars by releasing a few self driving cars as a test
run. If the run is deemed profitable the company could incrementally increase funding towards the
technology. The automobile manufacturer also would not fall too far behind in terms of competition.
Many companies that wait for competitors to test run products often fall off the market because they
join the game too late. Consumers also tend to lean towards brands that they know are reliable, rather

not attract as many consumers as anticipated.

Comparing Plato s Republic, The Philosopher And Plato
In Plato s Republic, the philosopher is sitting having a discussion with his fellow peers and friends.
During this conversation each character except Plato offers their opening and reasoning on the
question, what is justice. For the majority of the book Plato outlines almost every aspect of his ideal
city. Within this city Plato has set up many rules in order for the city to remain just. All the way from
mating rituals to who should rule, virtually all factors have been thought of and serves a specific
purpose. One of the most important question that was raised in the book is, who is should be the ruler
of the city? Evidently Plato believes that it is the philosopher who is most fit to rule. He reaches this
conclusion after discussing a variety of factors that put philosophers above the rest, Plato being a
philosopher seems to be the most creditable in making this argument in The Republic. In Plato s book,
Adeimantus attempts to put dispute his claim. Not only him but philosopher and a student of Plato,
Aristotle does the same in his text as well. Aristotle emphasizes the importance of the laws in his
Ethics and Politics. He specifically implies that a ruler who is a philosopher rules by judgment, not
laws, and as a result the ruler will rule for himself and thus becomes a tyrant (Nichomachean Ethics,
V.6, 1134a). Both Plato and Aristotle give compelling arguments as to why they think they are right on
who should rule. Aristotle s claim is accurate, that in the long run

only to discover that someone else has created a similar program, the possibility of a program
becoming obsolete like that of a dinosaur in a tar pit, and the program s innards and actions must be
perfect. However, Brooks gives the reader a positive insight to programming by comparing it to a
child s imagination. He states, He [the programmer] builds his castles in the air, from air, creating by
exertion of the imagination. (7) According to Brooks, software projects tend to fail when it comes to
time rather than runtime errors, finances, or manpower combined. He states that people tend to have
the mindset that more manpower will get a software project done earlier than intended. In Brooks s
opinion, adding more manpower is like dousing a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Challenges Of Emerging Markets
For businesses, emerging market has developed into a very well chosen destination for a firm
operating well in their own country which is looking for expansion. Developed markets usually hint at
the considerations to per capita income. Limited growth opportunity and emerging market economies
usually expect an availability of a larger amount of growth opportunity. In saying that, to maximize
shareholders return and business enjoy showing their strength in their own country, companies
showing interest in saturated markets may consider the need to take part in the emerging market to
benefit largely. However, emerging markets is based around the transition to a more market oriented
economic system. But yes, it does come at the expense of risks to hurdle over for the already
successful business, particularly from a cultural and economic point of view. If the risk is not
responded to well, internationalizing into emerging markets may lead to heavy financial woes. This
paper will analyse two recent business cases namely economist.com Japanese Electronics Firms:
Eclipsed by Apple (2014) and Michael Chen s Alcatel economictimes.com (ET Bureau 2014), which
is working on moving into an emerging/developing market and analyse their barriers from those 2
factors. Legal, political, cultural and economic factors are driving forces for business in emerging
market economies but they are not equally the same. Concentrating on two factors, both cultural and
economic, the second part of this

Woman Hating
Dworkin writes scathingly on footbinding in her book Woman Hating, alleging that in obtaining a
crippled wife, a man glories in her agony, he adores her deformity, he annihilates her freedom, he will
have her as a sex object, even if he must destroy the bones in her feet to do it. Brutality, sadism, and
oppression emerge as the substantive core of the romantic ethos. (Dworkin 112). Jeffreys quotes the
above from Dworkin in her own analysis of feet binding, ultimately concluding that foot binding was
the nascent precursor of a wave of prostitution which swept China. Indeed, Jeffreys adopts the
dominate theory posited by John Mao, prefacing that Women were dragooned into binding their
daughters feet, despite knowing the pain it would cause, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their arguments only point out how women are incapacitated or used as objects. However, as Brown s
field study showed, this analysis fails to comprehensively address causative forces of male dominance
from an economic standpoint. Though they are right in identifying male lust as the driving force
behind the subjugation of women, what is misunderstood are the consequences of such lust, which do
not cease with direct harm or objectification of women. By engaging in beauty practices, women are
not only rendered playthings, which is what the three seem to suggest, but are additionally retooled to
fit subservient economic roles, which serve to heighten and establish the hierarchal dominance of
men. Applying this economic perspective provides greater resolution and understanding of patriarchal
hierarchies. As Karen A. Callaghan observes in her introduction to the anthology Ideals of Feminine
Beauty: Philosophical, Social, and Cultural Dimensions, The gender hierarchy is sustained by beauty
norms that define women s power, self assertion and worth in terms that reify male dominance.
(Callaghan ix). Understanding the consolidation of male dominance necessitates defining these
hierarchies in a way that describes how female subservience is produced. It is important to note that
these hierarchies are multifaceted and exist as political, social,

Symbols and Journey Used in Ellison s Book Invisible Man ...
In the book Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison and the play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller the two
writers use various symbols to develop the American Literature Theme of The Journey. Two important
symbols Ellison uses in Invisible Man are dreams and the narrator s briefcase. Two important symbols
in Death of a Salesman are diamonds and the car. Ellison and Miller use these symbols to take their
characters through their life s journey, whether physical or metaphorical. The portentous dream the
narrator has in the beginning of Invisible Man foreshadows his whole journey throughout the book. In
the his dream at the end of the first chapter, he finds an envelope in his briefcase that says, To Whom
It May Concern, Keep this Nigger Boy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The briefcase holds the contents of the narrator s past; it haunts him and he cannot relieve himself of it
until the very end. When he is burning the contents he becomes a phoenix rising from the ashes to a
new life, a new journey. Within the briefcase is his high school diploma, the piece of paper with his
new identity on it that was given to him by the Brotherhood, Clifton s doll, the anonymous letter from
Jack. All of these things were a part of his old identities, always with him in that briefcase. In Death of
a Salesman, the diamonds are Willy s past and future, what could have been and what could be. Ben
tells Willy in one final scene, The jungle is dark but full of diamonds, Willy. One must go in to fetch a
diamond out. It s dark there, but full of diamonds (Miller 1993). Willy had the opportunity to go with
Ben to find real diamonds, real happiness. He missed his first chance and instead he must now die to
find the happiness, the diamond in the rough. The car is the way for Willy to reach true happiness, no
worries; a means of transportation eventually to Willy s death. Willy s life never amounted to anything
much in the end and he needed to escape. The car is his ferry to the afterlife, to his happiness. The first

popular and such of an accomplishment to the both of these women; What is it that appeals to the
people? What interests me to watch these shows are that they are both African American women with
strong leading roles in the show and also in real life. Ms. Pope is a great lawyer which is the career I
am choosing to pursue. Also Mary Jane is a strong T.V. personality who gets to run and talks about
what she wants and doesn t let the comments from others bring her down. Although they are both very
successful, work dedicated, and influential women they are also the type of women others hate to see
coming. It s hard to see such confident and educated women be able to settle knowing a man has a
wife and family and still try to form a relationship with him. Two wrongs don t make a right.
(anonymous) My only question is how can these now married women with children take pride in their
work while playing a role that degrades women? In 1869, Wyoming s territorial legislature declared
that every woman of the age of twenty one years, residing in this territory, may at every election...cast

Examples Of Id Ego And Superego In Lord Of The Flies
Sigmund Freud created the structural model of personality that describes the id, ego, and superego
parts of a person. Id is represented as the devil and based on the pleasure and benefiting themselves.
Ego is the angel and devil together, where there is balance of good and bad. Lastly, superego is shown
as the angel with good behavior and morals. In Golding s book Lord of the Flies, he uses Jack, Ralph,
and Piggy to represent Sigmund Freud s theory of the three personalities: id, ego, and superego.
Throughout the book, it can be noticed that Jack has the id personality. He wants to kill the pigs not
for the benefit of the group, but for himself. He can also be seen as the devil because of how he acts.
When Ralph and Jack were talking to each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the group were discussing about the fire, Piggy says, Cos the smoke s a signal and we can t be
rescued if we don t have smoke (173). Piggy is working to help out the boys by trying to inform them
about their situation, and how they can fix it together. Piggy is the voice of reason out of all the boys
by telling them how things will affect them as a group, and that is just like how the superego tells the
ego on how the action will influence society. Piggy always wants what is best for the group, and wants
them all to get off the island safely. When the group decided to move the fire from the mountain,
Golding describes, Piggy was so full of delight and expanding liberty in Jack s departure, so full of
pride in his contribution to the good of society, that he helped to fetch wood (129). Piggy wants to
guide the boys on the right path of survival, and enjoys when he is able to help. His involvement in
book by helping Ralph and the other boys is based on the focus of the superego to help the needs of
society.
Golding s Lord of the Flies takes the structural model of personality and uses it to represent Jack,
Ralph, and Piggy in the novel. He uses them to show how they interact with each other in society. He
wants the readers to understand that the id makes decisions and actions that feels good for themselves,
and not for others. The superego wants to help out society, and follow good morals, but often gets
overpowered and ignored by the id. Lasty, the ego is a balance of the two, and listens to both the
superego and the

Elementary Forms Of Religious Life
In his theory of how society and the individual coincide with each other Emile Durkheim believes that
the role of the person in society is heavily based on many factors. To Durkheim society can function
either under mechanical solidarity or organic solidarity under the forced division of labor and
depending on which it functions as aids in giving us a deeper understanding of the person and their
role as an individual in society. In his writings Elementary Forms of Religious Life he claims that each
individual carries the whole in himself but to understand his beliefs an understanding of the individual
and society within his writings Elementary Forms Of Religious Life and Devision of Labor will be
beneficial (Durkheim, pg. 226). By looking at the individual, through the lens of his writings
Elementary Forms Of Religious Life and Devision of Labor as building blocks for his theories of
social structure it will aid in explaining why the making of the individual is possible and whether it
conflicts with Durkheim s personal views. When trying to understand the role of the individual and
society through the lens of his writings Elementary Forms of Religious Life and Division of Labor a
few things will need to be established. First of all, when looking through the lens of Elementary Forms
of Religious Life key points differ from Devision of Labor . For example Elementary Forms of
Religious Life sets to explain the studying of primitive culture/religion to

  • 2. West Jest vs Air Canada Essay How serious is the threat from conventional airlines that want to imitate the westjet culture? What does it take to imitate organizational culture? Can Air Canada compete against westjet s employee productivity and its relationship with its employees? Ever since its establishment in 1996, WestJet has aimed to operate as a low cost carrier while employing non unionized members in a unique organizational culture. In its simplest form this unique organizational culture can be labeled as a labor managed firm. In a labor managed firm employees are owners, and they are affected by the company s performance through profit sharing. Then it should not be surprising that in labor managed firms, the employees can voice their opinions and actually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A labor force in its most basic form, through profit maximizing practices, must be minimized, due to the cost associated with it, in order to drive up profit. And it is because of this outlook that WestJet has managed to outperform their competition, for example Air Canada. This theory is in sync with the findings of Jeffery Pfeffer in his 1995 paper Producing sustainable competitive advantage through the effective management of people. As described above, the organizational culture, the foundation of WestJet s success, is heavily weighted on its people. Where as the competition, sees the workforce as a cost and aims to minimize it, WestJet looks at their work force as an asset and an investment. Conventional airlines run their business as any other company. They look out for the shareholder s best interest and do not pay the slightest attention to their workforce. In WestJet s culture, the workforce consists of the shareholders due to profit sharing and co operative environment. By nature capital managed firms will have a hard time converting to labor managed firm. They will have to change a lot of rules and regulations that governs their everyday operations. They will face a large number of opposition by their shareholders. According to Fernandez Guadano (2009) even if they do manage to adopt similar practices as labor managed firms, they will never be able to achieve the same rate of employee ownership and profit sharing as their counterparts, ... • 3. Villanova Research Paper With two titles in the past three years, the Villanova Wildcats are on their way to becoming a dynasty. Since the end of John Wooden s UCLA coaching tenure in 1975, only twice has a school won two times in the span of three years. These were Duke s early 90 s teams of Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, and Christian Laettner, and Florida s 2006 2007 teams of Joakim Noah, Al Horford, and Corey Brewer, meaning the Wildcats have joined elite company. Once known as a top team during the regular season who would flame out in March, Jay Wright s most recent teams have shattered that belief. Villanova has always prided itself on continuity and developing players within their system. In the era of one and done basketball, where over 200 underclassmen have declared for the NBA Draft in the last five years, Villanova has been largely immune. Although they lost four underclassmen this year, including National Player of the Year Jalen Brunson, Villanova is perfectly positioned for another title run. It s not a bad thing when Villanova s youngest team in years is still projected finish within ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their top four scorers are gone to the NBA. Had Donte Divincenzo and Spellman, who were both considering returning, stayed, they would have been ranked 1st. Only Eric Paschall and Phil Booth remain from the starting lineup, and they combined for only 20 points this past year. They are solid players, but neither of them are studs. But Jay Wright has dealt with this before. Jalen Brunson went from a 9.6 PPG player as a freshman to almost 19 as a junior. Donte Divincenzo had an 11 PPG uptick in only 2 years as well. Even when it seems as if Villanova is in trouble, the next man always steps up and produces for Wright s team. And Booth and Paschall are not alone. Would anyone be surprised if Collin Gillespie or Dhamir Cosby Roundtree, two freshmen who usually rounded out Wright s 8 man rotation, became key contributors in their second ... For every victory and defeat, what was it that really determined the outcome of the war? Which army leader had the better or worse battle plan? With the plan they had, did it increase their chances of victory? Were there key factors in an army leader s plan that lead to their defeat? Or, was the best decision made to completely avoid war? For a lot of the wars that took place and the ones that were avoided many years ago, the mystery still remains unsolved on how and why certain army leaders were victorious or gained a certain advantage because of the choices they made. On the other hand, it is also unknown on how or why an army leader failed to a certain extent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was a tactic in attempts to keep the enemy guessing and to cause the enemy to feel threatened and unsafe. It was a good strategy to trick the enemy into always thinking and feeling that an attack would happen at any given moment, something that would cause the enemy to develop stress or become restless with less chances of obtaining a sense of peace or assuming that an attack was not going to happen. If one was able to master the technique of deception, then it was likely that one will increase the chances of victory. In addition, it was crucial to become aware and analyze the enemy in order to determine if a planned and deceptive attack would work. Or, it was better to avoid confrontation if it was determined that the enemy would be stronger. Sun Tzu took into consideration that pacifism was also an important option which would benefit future and better planned attacks. He also made it clear from the beginning of his documentation that he took analytical measurements into account and the one that made more precise calculations than the enemy, one will win the war. Another significant lesson on warfare and leadership put forth by Sun Tzu was having the ability to conquer areas with no fighting at all. This lesson also involved the ability to absorb and expand within an area instead of total domination and annihilation. Sun Tzu mentioned, In the practical art of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Hot Cheetos Research Paper Preservation. It s something that many people over the centuries have done to keep pieces of history intact so it won t be forgotten. Sometimes it s to let future generations know about how life was in their era, the good times or the struggles. Or sometimes it s used in a fun way, such as a time capsule. Time capsules are a box type thing that you place in the ground, and when a certain number of years go by you can up it back up to reflect on the times that happened during the time the item was put inside. Others do this to have someone one day in the future find it to show how things were now. When I first heard about time capsules i wondered what I would put in that is something significant for me. It s not only the Flaming Hot Cheeto, they have Flaming hot popcorn, XXXtra Flaming Hot, Flaming Hot with lime, the list goes on and on. • 6. Violent Video Games And Violence Are violent video games directly correlated to teen violence? This is the burning question many researchers are dedicated to answering. The common form of the question is Is the increase in violence in games creating killer kids? The simple answer is no. Instead the opposite has occurred, as games became more violent, the players became calmer. The games create a safe outlet for any anger or angst that young people possess. Crime rates in the teen population have lowered and violent teens admit to having little to no interest in violent video games. The games that most people fear are destroying the youth may actually be one of the things helping them grow and become normal members in society. Games have been proven create a safe environment for players to release anger causing a decrease in real world aggression. A study published in Journal of Adolescent Health found that young people, especially boys use games as a way to manage emotions. 61.9% of boys played to help me relax, 47.8% because it helps me forget my problems, and 45.4% because it helps me get my anger out, the article reports. The games have become a kind of stress ball with a storyline. The game creates a safe environment by allowing the player to have violent interactions within a false, non harmful medium. No real world is performed keeping everyone safe. Also as more games include violence, more kids learn to use it as a coping mechanism. Another statistic that breaks the suspected ... • 8. How Does Steven King Create Suspense Individual Study Compare the ways Steven King in The Shining and William Friedkin in The Exorcist use techniques to create suspense. Steven King in his 1977 novel The Shining and William Friedkin in his 2001 film The Exorcist establishes that suspense can be created in many forms while both being equally effective in its own right. Although the characters are faced with a horrific dilemma in two very different settings, the techniques used to create suspense can be similar. In both texts suspense is produced through characterization, narrative structure and foreshadowing to create a state of anxious uncertainty for what may happen. While the characters within The Shining are placed in a traditional horror setting, where they are isolated. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Overcome with rage Karras takes the demon with him through a window and down the grey stair way, ultimately defeating it. In The Shining the hotel is mentioned within the first chapter, as Jack is being interviewed. However, it is only until chapter 4 that the reader is allowed a glimpse of the terrible things to come. Delaying the suspense allows for proper character development which will prove important in the long run. The word REDRUM, as stated previously was shown in chapter 4, it is a key word in the book that is repeated countless of times. Every time this key word appears it is accompanied by fear, Danny s fear. By introducing it so early into the story it pushed the reader to ponder the words meaning and because of its sinister association every time it was brought up more suspense was built up. It is later revealed that it was murder spelled in reverse. In both texts the authors use an anti climax principle that is highly effective in creating suspense in the viewer. It works for a system of false alarms followed by the real danger. An example of this is during Jacks possession and he remembers that he had forgot to dump the boiler. There is a race against the clock to save the hotel, which is already building up suspense with questions of will he make it. As he dumps the boiler it seems that he had got there in time, this in turn takes the tension away from the reader until suddenly the hotel blows. This is a good example of how suspense is used to create ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Video Games Can Never Be Art By Roger Ebert In today s culture, we tend to distance ourselves from what we think art is and what the real meaning of art is. The world we know is what we call our reality . Reality shows us art can be everything we see, hear, taste, touch, smell. Art is everything from what we really think and imagine. Art can be defined as something that cannot really be expressed through words. Art means different things to different people, which makes it difficult for art to be clearly defined. Art can be a painting but it can also be an idea expressed through a play. Art has many forms and we as humans put a sign on it depending on how it makes us feel and what it means to us. I also shared with you my opinion of why video games from Eberts claim saying its not. Now I show you my understanding of Ebert s narrow definition of art. Look I totally get it Mr. Ebert, we have some pretty lofty ideas of what qualifies as art and you are absolutely right in what you were classically trained to view cinema as an art form. I completely get that you are good at what you do best. You really get the spirit of art here that you established in your article with your understanding. In the world of art, there are many different forms such as cubism, symbolism, impressionism, graffiti, modernism, and now we have pixel and digital art. Some art forms are surprising to the eye and mind as being art such as a VanGogh painting or recycled plastic bottles molded into an odd shape. While I may not appreciate those pieces, they are art to the creator. Who would I, or you, be to diminish that opinion? Also, I agree with your claim on saying Video games have goals, rules, challenges and interactions . The reason why I agree with you on this claim is because every time people make video games it has components that consists of rules, challenges and interactions that makes game fun to play. But at the same time, video games are much more than that. Coming from the main issue, why is it disingenuous to not just turn around and apply that to video games? Herschel Experiment Lab Report Corinne Foley Ms. Azuree RMS Chemistry Period 2 2 October 2017 Analysis of Herschel Experiment Testable Question Will light beyond red give off more heat than visible light? Hypothesis Yes, as the wavelength of the light increases, the light will be hotter. Red has the longest wavelength on the visible light spectrum, so invisible light just beyond red would have a longer wavelength. Observations The temperature of the area just beyond the red light was consistently the highest (if sometimes tied with the temperature in the yellow or blue light) of the four temperatures. The temperature in the yellow light was the second highest, then blue, then the one in the shade. Sunlight still has heat energy beyond the visible light spectrum, as seen in this experiment. • 12. What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Biometrics There are many biometric techniques in existence today. Face recognition technology is one of them which make use of computer software to determine the identity of the person. Today conservative methods of identification like possession of certain type of identity cards, use of passwords etc. are not at all reliable for identity purposes where security is a critical factor. There is no surety in the fact that person using ATM card to withdraw money from any ATM machine is actual owner of the card. When credit and ATM cards are lost or stolen, it is not a big game for the unauthorized user to make an accurate guess of the correct personal codes. It is a common practice between we people that despite of strict warning we continue to choose easily guessed PIN s and passwords. Often we prefer our birthdays, cell numbers, house numbers and vehicle numbers. Identity cards can be lost, fake or misplaced and passwords can be forgotten or compromised. Whether it be by the gods they worship, the clothes they wear, the language they speak, or the many other factors associated with culture, each one originated from somewhere at some point in time. It is the job of archeologists and researchers worldwide to uncover the deep secrets left behind by ancient societies and to reconstruct the first civilizations known to mankind. The first urban cultures discovered were those of Mesopotamia and Egypt, which were founded between 4000 3000 BCE. There have been periods during which the entire planet has been covered in ice and at another time it has been scorchingly hot and dry. The last glacial period which current glaciers are the result of it, occurring during the last years of Pleistocene, from approximately 110,000 to 10,000 years age (Clayton, 1997). Remote sensing has become a very valuable tool for documenting the response of glacier to changing climate (Bamber and Kwok, 2003; Kuhn, 2007; Pellikka, 2007; Solomon et al, 2007) because the rugged terrain, inaccessibility and legendary poor weather of glacier areas has resulted in relatively few field based studies. Indeed, in order to use glaciers and their changes as indicators of climate change, or as an early warning signal for sea level rise, remote sensing is the only tool to provide glacier change information from all the continents and from a large number of glaciers and ice sheets. On the other hands, because space borne and airborne remote sensing data provide superior cost effective and area effective data and methods for monitoring the glaciers and their changes, part of this monitoring can be carried out by it. Glacier topography is one of the most important parameter to monitor as it is a key to glacier volume and glacier mass balance studies using the geodetic method. Whether they are superficial, like how she dresses or where she goes out to dinner, and others can be more life altering, like career she pursues and the relationships she chooses to have. One choice that women should be able to make for herself is what she chooses to do with her reproductive organs. A woman should be able to choose for herself whether or not she will have an abortion, yet there are so many other people who think they know better, whether that be government or the overly vocal Pro Life protestors sticking their nose in someone else s privates. Abortion, by definition, is the intended termination of a pregnancy that results in the death of a fetus or embryo. This deliberate medical procedure can be done in two distinctive ways, mainly hinging on how long the woman has been pregnant. A medical abortion is one that is done through prescription medications while being closely monitored by a medical professional. According to Planned Parenthood, Medical abortion, or the abortion pill, can occur up to 9 weeks into a pregnancy, and is performed over a two to three day period. A woman would be given a hormone blocker called Mifepristone in order to block progesterone, a hormone that vital for pregnancy during the first trimester. • 19. Buying vs Leasing Executive Summary What would be the best option for a company to lease or purchase equipment? Each business owner s situation is different. The decision to buy or lease business equipment is unique. It must be made on a case by case basis. Leasing equipment preserves capital giving the business more flexibility. While leasing can be good in the short run it can cost you more in the long run. We will look at the advantages and disadvantages of leasing. My research will look at the different options a company faces if they lease or buy and why it has become more attractive to lease. First let s start by describing the basic concept of a lease. Some leases are merely rentals, whereas others are effectively purchases. FASB classifieds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like house, then, buying is cheaper than renting in the long term. While leasing has both advantages and disadvantages. Let s take a look at the disadvantages. The lack of ownership would be a main disadvantage. You are obligated to make payments and when a lessee encounters financial distress, the lessor typically becomes its largest creditor. If a lessor decides to reduce exposure and recall its leased aircraft, an airline can no longer operate. Lessors require payments for all aspects of airplane utilization and rent, meaning maintenance reserves and so on. The cash flow becomes much tighter while if they own their own jets they have much more flexibility. According to Boeings Zolotusky, it comes down to two basic considerations, the quality of the aircraft involved and the customer involved. Businesses can change operations and it may be expensive and difficult to terminate a lease before the end of the term. If the business owns the property it might be easier to sell and make money rather than losing all of its assets and getting nothing in return. In some cases of leasing when it s time to renew the owners might demand higher rental payments putting the lessee at a disadvantage. Lessors offer a very sensible business proposition. For airlines that want to be primarily airlines, it s a very attractive and efficient service. If the operators want to focus on the service of getting people on planes, ... Upon opening the book, and beginning to read the first chapter, it felt as though the author was introducing me to the book as if in real life. The author spoke as if he wasn t telling the story, but instead preparing you for the story. The fact of the matter, is that he was doing both. Calvino was preparing the reader for the first story of the book by listing the best ways to read a book by removing any distractions and getting comfortable. Reading this was very hard going, as the first chapter to me it read like a set of stereo instructions and it made me think I don t need to be told the best way read a book, as the best way to read a book is all down to personal preference. This is quite mis leading at the time because we presume that what we are reading is actually the words that have been written by the author, but is in fact the perspective of the reader reading the book and taking an active role in the book. However, this is not so much noticeable in this first story as it does read like a normal book. As the book progresses we begin to realise that the tone used is the reader s perspective. To me, this is not particularly amusing but very confusing, but looking at it from Calvino s point of view it is amusing to think that he is playing a joke on the reader and constantly `spinning out the reader. Unfortunately though, we can never be really sure what the author s true intentions were when writing the book. The first story of the book is about someone who is travelling. He arrives at the train station and goes into the station bar where he hears about the lives of the locals. These locals apparently seem to lead predictable lives, as a couple of the locals are placing bets on the actions of the other locals when they arrive at the bar. This is the very first hint of the repetition within the book (if I am not reading into things too much). I find it funny, as I ve often done this myself with friends, and it reminds me of being able to predict the reactions of certain people when certain events arise. Sources of Mercury and Health Effect Sources of Mercury and Health Effect Mercury is a naturally occurring element found in the earth s crust that can be found as the elemental or metallic mercury or in many organic and inorganic compounds. Mercury is a metal that when at room temperature is a silvery liquid metal and is often called one of the heavy metals. Mercury can evaporate like water, and become airborne. It is an element that does not break down into a less toxic substance. Once mercury escapes into the environment it will continue to circulate in and out of the atmosphere until it ends up at the bottoms of lakes and oceans. It cannot be created or destroyed (UWM, 2004). The most common or leading source of mercury in the environment is atmospheric deposition. Once mercury has reached the atmosphere it can circulate for years which make up for the extensive distribution in the environment. The natural sources that contribute to atmospheric mercury are volcanoes, geologic deposits of mercury, weathering of rocks and volatilization from the ocean. Rocks, sediments, water and soil also naturally contain small amounts of mercury; scientists have even found some local mineral occurrences and thermal springs that are natural high in mercury (USGS, 2009). Secondary sources of mercury result from burning fossil fuels and smelting metals. Mercury is also a by product of gold and zinc mining. The State s Electoral System POLI 201: Electoral Reform in Canada Kelsey Dechant UCID 30012085 November 10, 2015 TA: Camilo Torres, T03 The format of a state s electoral system plays a foundational role in the quality of its democracy. Illiberal democracies, for example, may limit potential opponents of the ruling party; these kinds of states are generally said to be less democratic than those which encourage political freedom. Because a nation s electoral structure influences the nature of its democracy, one must take a critical view on current systems and seek to better them where possible. Though not an extreme example, the electoral system in Canada can be said to hinder democracy, albeit indirectly, leading to apathy and discontent amongst the electorate. In a disproportionate system such as Canada s, citizens voices are not as easily or accurately represented. For this reason, it is of utmost importance to consider electoral reform so that Canada s system is more proportionate and conducive to political engagement. Canada s current electoral arrangement is known as a single member plurality or first past the post system. In this system, the basis of seat distribution is who has the most votes during an election. For example, a candidate who wins 34 percent of the popular vote will go on to represent a riding, even if the rest of the votes go to two or more different parties. Plurality systems increase government stability and effectiveness using a manufactured majority ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Taking a Look at Neurotransmitter Release Neurotransmitter release is a key step to neuro transmission, in the middle of the 20th century; it has been clearly revealed that chemical signals transfer the great majority of the information in the brain. Therefore, different neurochemistry approaches have been emerged to investigate neurotransmitter release process. Later, introducing a radiolabeled precursor into the CNS and measuring the accumulation of a radiolabeled product have made critical improving and developing in vitro preparations approaches including isolated nerve ending fractions or synaptosomes, cultured cells and tissue slices. It is about 1,000 miles off the tip of Florida in between the Dominican Republic and the Virgin Islands. The climate is tropical and mild with little variation in the seasonal temperature. Although driverless cars are feared because they may cause more accidents, the first autonomous car accident was at the fault of a human. The advancements that driverless cars offer to modern technology and its potential market deems itself more beneficial than not. Therefore, automobile manufacturing companies should invest in driverless cars. Autonomous cars would be labeled as a disruptive innovation since its implementation could lead to a lower demand for normal cars. This never before seen technology may very well be the new hit thing thus also making it a radical innovation. A similar effect can be seen through the creation of smartphones. ... One reason that Kodak has failed had been that it failed to commercialize its film technology due to its inability to adapt to the growing technology. However, the manufacturer could bring in additional expertise to gain more insight on the profitability of the technology and train employees of its uses. Additionally, the manufacturer could assess the demand for driverless cars by releasing a few self driving cars as a test run. If the run is deemed profitable the company could incrementally increase funding towards the technology. The automobile manufacturer also would not fall too far behind in terms of competition. Many companies that wait for competitors to test run products often fall off the market because they join the game too late. Consumers also tend to lean towards brands that they know are reliable, rather than fresh companies. With this method, the company would not lose as much if autonomous car did not attract as many consumers as anticipated. During this conversation each character except Plato offers their opening and reasoning on the question, what is justice. For the majority of the book Plato outlines almost every aspect of his ideal city. Within this city Plato has set up many rules in order for the city to remain just. All the way from mating rituals to who should rule, virtually all factors have been thought of and serves a specific purpose. One of the most important question that was raised in the book is, who is should be the ruler of the city? Evidently Plato believes that it is the philosopher who is most fit to rule. He reaches this conclusion after discussing a variety of factors that put philosophers above the rest, Plato being a philosopher seems to be the most creditable in making this argument in The Republic. In Plato s book, Adeimantus attempts to put dispute his claim. Not only him but philosopher and a student of Plato, Aristotle does the same in his text as well. Aristotle emphasizes the importance of the laws in his Ethics and Politics. He specifically implies that a ruler who is a philosopher rules by judgment, not laws, and as a result the ruler will rule for himself and thus becomes a tyrant (Nichomachean Ethics, V.6, 1134a). Both Plato and Aristotle give compelling arguments as to why they think they are right on who should rule. Aristotle s claim is accurate, that in the long run ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Brooks, Junior, starts off his tale of software engineering by giving the reader an image of prehistoric creatures programs struggling for survival against a tar pit. The fact is that programmers and their tools must be perfect in syntax and in reliability and every day a program is struggling to reach the requirements of today s standards. He speaks of the skirmishes that surround the creation of a program such as putting forth time and effort only to discover that someone else has created a similar program, the possibility of a program becoming obsolete like that of a dinosaur in a tar pit, and the program s innards and actions must be perfect. However, Brooks gives the reader a positive insight to programming by comparing it to a child s imagination. He states, He [the programmer] builds his castles in the air, from air, creating by exertion of the imagination. (7) According to Brooks, software projects tend to fail when it comes to time rather than runtime errors, finances, or manpower combined. He states that people tend to have the mindset that more manpower will get a software project done earlier than intended. In Brooks s opinion, adding more manpower is like dousing a ... Brutality, sadism, and oppression emerge as the substantive core of the romantic ethos. (Dworkin 112). Jeffreys quotes the above from Dworkin in her own analysis of feet binding, ultimately concluding that foot binding was the nascent precursor of a wave of prostitution which swept China. However, as Brown s field study showed, this analysis fails to comprehensively address causative forces of male dominance from an economic standpoint. Though they are right in identifying male lust as the driving force behind the subjugation of women, what is misunderstood are the consequences of such lust, which do not cease with direct harm or objectification of women. By engaging in beauty practices, women are not only rendered playthings, which is what the three seem to suggest, but are additionally retooled to fit subservient economic roles, which serve to heighten and establish the hierarchal dominance of men. Applying this economic perspective provides greater resolution and understanding of patriarchal hierarchies. As Karen A. Callaghan observes in her introduction to the anthology Ideals of Feminine Beauty: Philosophical, Social, and Cultural Dimensions, The gender hierarchy is sustained by beauty norms that define women s power, self assertion and worth in terms that reify male dominance. (Callaghan ix). Understanding the consolidation of male dominance necessitates defining these hierarchies in a way that describes how female subservience is produced. Id is represented as the devil and based on the pleasure and benefiting themselves. Ego is the angel and devil together, where there is balance of good and bad. Lastly, superego is shown as the angel with good behavior and morals. In Golding s book Lord of the Flies, he uses Jack, Ralph, and Piggy to represent Sigmund Freud s theory of the three personalities: id, ego, and superego. Piggy is the voice of reason out of all the boys by telling them how things will affect them as a group, and that is just like how the superego tells the ego on how the action will influence society. Piggy always wants what is best for the group, and wants them all to get off the island safely. When the group decided to move the fire from the mountain, Golding describes, Piggy was so full of delight and expanding liberty in Jack s departure, so full of pride in his contribution to the good of society, that he helped to fetch wood (129). Piggy wants to guide the boys on the right path of survival, and enjoys when he is able to help.
