Taking a Look at Racism
Racism has presented itself countless times throughout the history of human existence. It exists in
many forms, and its consequences have proven dire several times. The definition of racism varies
depending on the dictionary, but the common theme throughout all definitions is one of intolerance or
hatred toward a culture. The concept of a culture, however, is a socially constructed concept in order
to classify humans based on their behavior, mannerisms, social ideals, ethnicity, age, faith, skin color,
or other category deemed identifiable. Every single one of the categories created to define a culture
was just that; they were created. On the grounds that culture is a social construct, by the virtue of the
definitions at hand, the hatred of a culture and therefore racism is in fact a social construct. Presented
with the question of What is racism and in what forms does it exist today? it can be answered in a
notably extreme way with a multitude of genocides occurring throughout the world at this very
moment. The very concept of a genocide is one built upon the social construct of racism that has
turned violent. The continent of Africa is most known for the major genocides occurring today, such as
in Darfur, Central African Republic, and many other countries within the continent. Racism at its root
is taking a socially constructed category, deeming it lesser than the category that you put yourself into
and using other socially constructed reasoning to justify actions

The Battle Of The Somme Offensive
The Battle of the Somme, also known as the Somme Offensive, was a battle of the First World War.
The battle was fought by the armies of the British and French empires against the German Empire,
including Australia who came to support the mother county . It took place between 1th July and 18th
November 1916 on both sides of the River Somme in France. It was one of the largest battles of World
War I, in which more than 1,000,000 men were wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest
battles in human history. (Wikipedia, 2015)
The Somme offensive was planned in December 1915 and was intended as a joint French British
attack. The French Commander in Chief, General Joffre, conceived the idea as a battle to reduce the
German empire s strength and effectiveness through continual attack and create a distraction for the
Germans to relieve some of the pressure for the French, although territorial gain was a secondary aim.
(Firstworldwar.com, 2009) For a number of months, the French had been taking severe losses at the
Battle of Verdun (which took place at the east of Paris). In order to take German pressure off the
French, the Allied High Command attacked the Germans north of Verdun therefore requiring the
Germans to move some of their men away. (Toor, 2014) The plan was agreed upon by the new British
Commander in Chief, Sir Douglas Haig and by the British government, who granted authorisation to
conduct the offensive. (Firstworldwar.com, 2009)

What Are The Obstacles Ralph Faced In Lord Of The Flies
The three most important obstacles Ralph faced in his efforts to govern the Island was, his fairness,
fear and his morals. The first obstacle of his effort was his fairness. Ralph at the beginning of the story
was voted on to be the chief. He however, saw how much it hurt Jack, that he was not picked. Ralph,
trying to be fair, decided to let Jack have control of the hunters or the choir. The choir belongs to you,
of course, (pg. 23) Ralph said to Jack. This gave Jack power, and left him wanting more and because
he wanted what Ralph had, power, there was a tension between Jack and Ralph. The second obstacle
Ralph had to overcome was his fear. Ralph had to overcome his fears of not being rescued, and the
beast. In the beginning, the most important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ralph saw a boat at this point in the story and saw the fire was out. This outraged Ralph because he
was afraid of staying on the Island forever, The fire was dead, the ship was gone. Could they not see?
Anger instead of decency passed his throat. (pg. 72) However, Ralph had to overcome his anger, and
realized keeping the boys together was the most important action. Ralph learned that he had to put
others first before his own wants. If Ralph did not overcome fear of being on the Island forever, the
boys would have been lost to savagery from that point. Meaning they would not be governed
anymore. The last obstacle Ralph had to overcome was his morals in order to govern the boys. Ralph
was a character based on civilization and morals but, because the boys were losing their morals, they
were losing their interest in Ralph. The boys started to relate to the savagery of Jack, than the morals
of Ralph. If Ralph would of switched from his morals to savagery he would of kept his power but,
because he never got over this obstacle, he lost his power, which was everything he had. This put Jack
ahead of Ralph in power causing the boys to be lost in savagery and unable to be

Business Cycle Essay
In everyday society, companies are affected by the economy. The company either suffers or benefits
depending on what kind of economy it is. This will depend on what kind of company it is, and what
kind of market the business does well in. The Business Cycle is what determines this factor. It is a
term used in economics to designate changes in the economy.
Timing of the business cycle is not predictable, but its phases seem to be. Many economists site four
phases prosperity, liquidation, depression, and recovery. During a period of prosperity, a rise in
production leads to increases in employment, wages, and profits. Obstacles then begin to obstruct
further expansion. Production costs can increase, helping create a rise in prices, and ... Show more

get things done easily and swiftly are greatly appreciated. Since Americans work more hours than any

Nobody has enough time to do the little things, like get gas, go grocery shopping, etc.... Society is also
willing to pay the extra bucks to have the groceries hand delivered to their doors because grocery

The Importance Of Ethnic Difference In The Great Gatsby
Compulsive concern over ethnic difference has always been a blended part of American culture;
however, at points in the history of the United States of America this concern reached its peak. The
1920s was a period in the history of the nation during which the concern over ethnic difference
heightened in an intensive, yet explicit way. The 1920s was the peak of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK).
This phase in history was accountable for the emergence of many thinkers such as Madison Grant,
who is responsible for one of the most famous works in scientific racism, and also had a crucial role in
crafting strong immigration restrictions and anti miscegenation laws within America. Additionally, the
rise of other racial theorist is seen within this time such as Lothrop Stoddard, famously known for The
Rising Tide of Color Against White World Supremacy, in which Stoddard describes the perils of
coloured people, and their immigration to the United States. In this stage of time, with such thinkers
and writers (Grant and Stoddard) gaining influence, concern over ethnic difference became evident on
the surface of daily life. Although the prejudice of the 1920s is not remembered by most today, it had
an important part in setting the tone of this book, The Great Gatsby. F. Scott Fitzgerald the author of
The Great Gatsby is known as one of the most influential writers of the 1920s due to his penetrating
literary accounts of life in the 1920s within America. In this masterpiece, by

Cause And Effect Essay On Tsunamis
Tsunami Assignment
Cause
Firstly tsunamis can be caused by landslides, Earthquakes and Volcanic eruptions. Most tsunamis are
caused by massive earthquakes on the seafloor when parts of rock move past each other all of a
sudden causing water to move. A tsunami is a large sequence of very large waves created by a sudden
movement on the ocean s floor. Most earthquakes that create tsunamis happen in places around the
world called the subduction zones this is where pieces of the earth s crust press up against each other.
The subduction zone is where an oceanic plate is being forced down into the mantle by plate tectonic
forces. The friction between the subducting plate and the overriding plate is huge. This friction helps
prevent a slow and steady rate of subduction and instead the two plates become stuck. Tsunamis are
caused in the open ocean and at first they can appear to be only tiny waves but they can grow very fast
in size as they reach shallow water before crashing into villages, towns or even cities.
How it is recorded / warnings including the use of primary and secondary waves
A tsunami has a very long wavelength which can reach up to hundreds of kilometres. This means that
the steepness or slope of the wave is very small so it is almost impossible to see with the human eye at
first. But there are ocean observing tools that are able to detect tsunamis from a long rage now and is
able to warn certain people that a Tsunami is coming. It took the National oceanic and atmospheric
administration twenty years to make a reliable (tsunamograph). A tsunamograph is an instrument that
gives people accurate real time data on tsunamis. There are different anchored ocean bottom pressure
recorders at a depth of five thousand meters and most of the recorders area around the subduction
zones since this is where most tsunamis happen all around the world.
Example of recent event including damaged caused
In March 2011, at 2:46pm local time the most powerful offshore earthquake hit the northeast coast of
japan triggered a massive tsunami that reached the size of thirty nine meters. Firstly there was violent
shaking for about three to five minutes and then the massive wave hit. The 8.9 magnitude earthquake

Studying Stress among Law Enforcement Officers
In contemporary society, a police office is a bonded and warranted employee of a law enforcement
organization, be it a local, regional, or state police force; a federal law agency, or a more specific
correctional facility or other law enforcement organization. The specific reason society has law
enforcement is that groups of people living together do not always exist in harmony, and it is the job
of the police officer to maintain public order, prevent and detect criminal activity, apprehend
criminals, collect evidence, and see that the due process of law is followed within their given duty
range. Under the rubric of the Western democracies, the major role of the police force is to keep order
and discourage crime. Their organization is also asked to assist with emergency and disaster services,
emergency medical situations, and to assist citizens in need. The duties of a police officer vary so
dramatically, that the safety and internal culture of a police force differs from organization to
organization (e.g. a Police Office in a large metropolitan area like New York will have different duties
and dangers than a County Sheriff in a rural Oklahoma area) (Barlow, 2000).
Society has certain expectations of their law enforcement personnel, and that, combined with the legal
aspects and internal stress resulting from the constancy of danger and dealing with the underside of
society, supplies its own pressures to police officers. Officers are often in danger of infectious disease,

Secular Worldview And Secular Worldview
In order to compare the Christian worldview to the secular worldview of account, one must
understand the definition of what a world view is and what a Christian worldview looks like as well as
what a secular worldview looks like. It is not uncommon for individuals to have different worldviews
because the meaning of the word is a set of beliefs one uses to understand the world. All people grow
up viewing the world different because to the different things they experience in their lives. A
worldview defines the basis of how an individual interprets reality. A person s worldview would help
establish one s principles by how they judge right from wrong and it s their guide for everyday living.
A person s worldview shapes the way individuals interact within the world. Worldview plays a major
role when it comes to establishing one s moral opinions such as religious beliefs, marriage, politics,
social structures, environmental concerns, educational standards, economics, children upbringing,
food consumption, and the list continues. Individuals behave according to what they believe, not what
they don t believe. In today s world there are so many different worldviews and spiritual worldviews.
Most worldviews can be summed up into either a secular humanist worldview or a Christian
worldview.
Secular worldview is a religious worldview that states that man is the measure. In this worldview
everything is centered on human beings and they tend to act as God. Individuals with this

My Folio 2 submission Poetically Cromulent is a free verse poem intended to lampoon traditional
conventions of poetry and the English language. Though targeted primarily towards students, I feel the
piece can appeal to anyone who has experienced the ambiguity and subjectivity of literary analysis.
The central theme of the poem: something spurious attempting to appear legitimate, is blatantly
revealed in the title. Most readers cannot decipher this meaning, however, due to the recondite nature
of the term Cromulent . The arrogant and pompous tone is perhaps the most prevalent feature of the
poem and is vital in my characterisation of the narrator. I establish tone with the ironic opening line

The writer describes himself as a holy grail [monk] that [has] hit the books too much , suggesting he
has obtained his mastery of language through intensive study. This double entendre, however, is also a
reference to the infamous Monty Python and The Holy Grail procession scene, undermining the writer
and likening English to a religion blindly followed by brain dead disciples. All remaining biblical
allusions form an Garden of Eden allegory; one which elevates the narrator to god like status. I portray
myself as the forbidden tree whose branches offer mellifluous fruit , inferring that I am a source of
infinite wisdom. By extension the students represent the Adam and Eve, archetypes of naivety, who
expect to be struck in the eye by the serpent of sibilance , representing analysis of sibilance,
alliteration, consonance and onomatopoeic techniques which are perceived as unsophisticated.
Ultimately, the students succumb to the temptation of consulting the writer. Just as Adam and Eve
were cursed by the fruit, so too are the pupils with the knowledge of how to exploit the superficiality
of English. The ability to mask poor content and analysis by exploiting intricate language such as
melodic magnum opus and

Red Nightmare Influence On American Culture
America was once described as baseball and apple pie. The Cold War forced small town America to
choose between a simpler time and a new modernized age. The United States being a superpower in
the Cold War has locked horns with the Soviet Union over which form of government was best. The
struggle for power in both countries consisted of espionage, counter warfare, propaganda and a space
race. The Cold War had formed a new frontier of changes. The U.S. society had been divided.
Americans were having to choose between simple small town traditional values or future innovative
advances and cultural changes.
In the 1962 film, Red Nightmare illustrates a society of traditional mid town America. A place not in
the new frontier of changes. This movie demonstrates the consequences of not embracing the future. A
town that chose not to go forward. A society under communistic rule without constitutional rights.

Ailurus Fulgens Research Paper
Red Panda
Ailurus fulgens
Madison Gee
August 24, 2016
Background Information The red panda, classified as Ailurus fulgens, is a mammal and the only living
member of its family, Ailuridae. Red pandas are native to high altitude temperate forests, such as the
eastern Himalayas and Burma, as well as parts of Nepal, India, and Tibet. The subspecies Ailurus
fulgens fulgens can be found in Nepal and India, while the other, Ailurus fulgens styani, is native to
China. There are few differences between the two subspecies; Ailurus fulgens styani is slightly larger
and has stronger teeth. The first known account of the red panda took place in a 13th century scroll in
China, while the first westerner to document the species was French zoologist Frédéric Cuvier in
1825. Many believe that the name panda was derived from its Nepalese name, nigalya ponya, which

thick fur covers the soles of their feet as well. The red panda is slightly larger than a domestic cat, but
its tail can extend to up to 23 inches long. The tail is used for balance when moving in the trees and as

The Role Of Offred In The Handmaid s Tale
Margaret Atwood s novel, The Handmaid s Tale, is a dystopian story of a woman s worth and role in
society. The novel is in the perspective of Offred, a handmaid from the dystopian United States: the
Republic of Gilead. Women have always been told and perceived to be submissive to men, since the
beginning of time. This story, is no exception to this belief, as Handmaids are women stripped of their
rights as a human. Atwood s story The Handmaid s Tale suggests that the desire for freedom is what
all human beings seek for and captures this idea through the protagonist, Offred. This desire cannot be
suppressed by society or conditionings of the mind because it is the sole reason of what makes a
person, a human being. The main character of the novel, Offred, ... Show more content on

nervous. How was I to know he loved me?...The knock would come at the door; I d open, with relief,
desire (Atwood 56). Even though the affair she had was considered wrong in society, it did not stop
Offred from going with what she desired. Her desire for Luke and his love outweighed her concerns of
what she was afraid of and what society deemed was right. Offred s character experiences what
humans feel. Atwood created Offred to display that people desire freedom. Another example of Offred
s desire of freedom to love, is evident when she explains her thoughts to the reader. In the Republic of
Gilead, the only women who are married are the Commander s wives. This means that the other

Biofeedback Research Paper
Biofeedback is sometimes a very confusing topic. It refers to the use of electronic, medical devices to
give more auditory, verbal, and visual information back to the body about how it is working. For
example, during biofeedback when a person tries to relax his muscles, he can hear a sound telling the
degree of relaxation. Or if a person is to slow his pulse, he can hear or see his pulses more easily than
by just feeling the pulse. By hearing the pulse, it is easier to try to manipulate it with his conscious
control. This is also done with temperature control. When people are nervous, their hands might get
colder or sweaty and warmer. During biofeedback, by giving an auditory and/or visual signal
individuals are able to better direct their

Water Quality
Summary:
In this experiment, different methods for cleaning water were used to see how they affected the water
quality. The hypothesis was that boiling water and then pouring it through a carbon sac would clean
the pond water effectively. This is because when the water is boiled, it kills most bacteria and
evaporates chlorine. Then the carbon filter would clear out the suspended matter and some chemicals
such as nitrate. The hypothesis was correct in that most of the measurement categories except for
turbidity because the carbon sac accidentally made the water turn black ish. A source of error was that
the 225 ml sample had to be split into three containers but it was not split. This was fixed by splitting
the remaining water into two containers and then running it through the procedure again and
measuring that. In the end, the method was good for cleaning water but could not instantly make dirty
pond water drinkable.
Introduction
The objective is to see how boiling water and then pouring it through a carbon sac will improve water
quality. This method of cleaning water will be the most effective because boiling kills chlorine but has
no effect on suspended matter. However, the carbon

Stephenie Meyer Influence On Religion
On December 24, 1973, Stephenie Meyer was born in Hartford, Connecticut and later raised in
Phoenix, Arizona. Being brought up as a Mormon, she was very religious and was thought of as
intelligent and bright by almost every one of her teachers. In early childhood, she began to read
authors from Emily Dickinson to Shakespeare which influenced her award winning four book series.
Taking themes and similar ideas from the authors that inspired her, Stephenie Meyer brought the love
for vampire thrillers back to life in her series, The Twilight Saga.
Her major works are what make people gravitate towards her. In early June of 2003, Meyer dreamt of

soon as she finds out, it s all mushy love and action from there. Edward is always trying to protect her,
which what girl doesn t want that in a guy, but while Bella loves that, she is also trying to be
independent and make her own decisions. Meyer does an outstanding job of making the reader feel
what Bella is feeling throughout the entire series. I believe she does the best in New Moon when
Edward leaves Bella because he thinks he is hurting her and robbing her of her humanity. He feared
she would one day want to become a vampire and didn t wish that for her, he didn t even wish that for
himself. With that thought, he left her at once. Meyer took the reader through how Bella coped with
the loss of Edward and what she did to keep her from thinking about him. People may not have gone
through something this dramatic, but it s a relatable topic which is why people gravitate toward this
series. People also love to see the love story unravel with all the obstacles they have to face in order to
be together in the end. While reading and anticipating, the reader sees the two characters fall in love

Susan Burton In The Foreword By Michele Alexander
Michele Alexander writes a Foreword in Becoming Ms. Burton, where she makes a bold comparison
after explaining an unidentified woman: Some people know this woman by the name Harriet Tubman.
I know her as Susan (xi). Alexander compares Susan Burton to Underground Railroad heroine, Harriet
Tubman. Over the course of the Foreword, it covers what Susan Burton does, how she is helping many
individuals, and essentially saving lives of those in need, much like Harriet Tubman did. This
comparison is crucial in setting up the idea of how special Susan Burton is, before revealing any major
information about her life. Alexander, by putting Ms. Burton next to such an important and
inspirational historical figure, gives the readers and idea of how incredible Susan is. Throughout the
book, the reader can go back to the comparison made by Alexander, and see how accurate it truly is.
Prompt #2 In Becoming Ms. Burton, it s sufficient to say Susan has suffered many high and low points
in her life. There are many factors out of Susan s control that are responsible for the downfalls she
experiences. After going over the internal and external factors, I ve narrowed it down to three: race,
gender, and home life. All three factors share the same problem; all are Susan s unearned
disadvantages in life. What I mean by unearned disadvantage is that Susan suffers from the
consequences of being African America, a woman, and having not an ideal upbringing. To get started,

Ayn Rand s Anthem Essay
Ayn Rand s Anthem
In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand there are many themes. These themes include love, desire, equality,
freedom, and individuality. Most of these themes are all shown by the majority of the characters in the
book, especially Equality 7 2521. One can see that the themes of love and individuality are very
important in the novel. The theme of love is shown between Equality 7 2521 and Liberty 5 3000. The
theme of individuality is shown by Equality 7 2521.
Anthem is a novel about a man, Equality 7 2521, who went against the laws to make his own
individual choices, to gain knowledge, and to love the woman of his choice. Equality 7 2521 lived in a

After Equality 7 2521 fled into the Uncharted Forests and became free from the councils he finds out
that Liberty 5 3000 had followed his footsteps to be with him. For the first time Liberty 5 3000 and
Equality
7 2521 made love. After this the two start to reject morals and ethics of their old society and make
their own. Later in their travels the Golden One and the Unconquered discover a house built in the
Unmentionable times.
At this house they get new names to show their new found freedom.
Equality 7 2521?s new name was Prometheus, this is because Prometheus taught men to be gods.
Liberty 5 3000?s new name was Gaea, this is because Gaea was the mother of rebirth and Liberty 5
3000 was the mother of a new society.
In Anthem love is a very important theme. The love between
Liberty 5 3000 and Equality 7 2521 was true, even though it is said ?what is not thought by all men
cannot be true?(Anthem, Page 81). Their love brought them for a civilization where the word ?I? did
not exist to a world of their own where they were free to do what they loved. Throughout their entire
relationship their love was forbidden, yet Liberty 5 3000 and
Equality 7 2521 broke the law for their love.
Individuality was also a major theme in the novel Anthem.
Equality7 2521 showed his individuality in many ways. Early in Equality

What Are Some Examples Of Foreshadowing In Watership Down
Watership Down, written by Richard Adams in 1970, is a story centered around rabbits. The two main
characters are Hazel and Fiver. When Fiver senses that there is danger in the warren, Hazel and Fiver
go to the leader of the warren, Threarah and tell him that all of the rabbits must leave the warren
because of danger. Threarah says it is too risky to move all over the rabbits and insist that there is no
danger. Regardless, Hazel and Fiver decide to leave the warren and look for a new home. Along the
way they come across many obstacles, but in the end, they are able to create a safe new warren.

All of the animals are personified because rabbits don t actually talk, but the writer Richard Adams
made them seem almost human. Without personification the story would simple be about rabbits
hoping around. Adams also uses foreshadowing in the book. One example of this is when Fiver says,
Oh, Hazel! This is where it comes from! I know now something very bad! Some terrible thing coming
closer and closer (Adams 7). This is foreshadowing because it gives an idea of what is going to
happen in the future of the story and later in the book something terrible did happen. Foreshadowing
makes the story interesting and can keep the reader interested. There are also many different similes
used throughout the story. The light, full and smooth, lay like a gold rind over the turf (Adams 123) I
can feel the danger like a wire round my neck like a wire Hazel, help? (Adams 13). These are
examples of similes because they use the words like or as to compare two different things. Simile help
the reader to be able to see what is happening in the story in their mind and to be able to imagine it.
For example, Her hair was red is dull and is not very descriptive, but Her hair was as red as fire gives
the reader an idea of how red it the hair was and allows the reader to imagine it. Without similes
Watership Down would be dull and

Northern Mesopotamia And. Cahokia And Monte Alban
Small communities in southern Mesopotamia evolved to one of the earliest states due to
environmental changes that occurred between the Ubaid and Uruk periods. These environmental
changes such as the creation of Arabo Persian Gulf increased population in certain regions, which in
turn increased competition, warfare, and optimal settings for trade. All this lead to some of the earliest
states being formed in Southern Mesopotamia.
Cahokia and Monte Alban are two examples of primary states that were formed in Mesoamerica due
to their competition level. Monte Alban used strategic warfare tactics to get control over regions that
were rich in resources in order to do create a sustainable state. On the other hand because of Cahokia s
lack of control over distant regions, their state destructed in a very short time period, concluding that
competition was the main reason for early state formation.
In the later years of Northern Mesopotamia civilization, the climate changed dramatically causing the
collapse of several states in the region. Volcano eruptions, increased degree of dryness, and other
changes in the climate destroyed the agriculture in the area causing people to relocate to other states.
This article solidifies the view that environmental changes are the only reason states formed in certain
regions in the first place.

Colonial DBQ
Although New England, primarily Massachusetts, and the Chesapeake region, primarily Virginia,
were largely settled by people of English origins, by 1700 these regions had evolved into two distinct
societies. The difference in development occurred for the following three reasons, the motives of the
settlers, the people that settled there and the geography of the respective regions.
One of the most important differences in development for the New England and Chesapeake regions
was the motives of the settlers. The colonists who founded Massachusetts, the Puritans, a reformist
Christian group, largely settled there for religious reasons. The Puritans, led by John Winthrop, wanted
to create a model religious community. The central idea of Puritan Massachusetts is summarized by
John Winthrop when he says We must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. (Doc. A) One of
the most important staples of this community was the idea that God was the focus of life no matter

many people spending time on social networking sites, it only seems logical that these sites might be

Some More Facts About Pediatric Speech Therapy
Some more facts about pediatric speech therapy The parents need to be very observant when it comes
to noticing the all over development of the child. Many times the parents get too upset about the child
s development regarding his responding to the various sounds and noises. Child specialists say that it
is crucial for the child to respond to any conversation or sound in children speech therapy. In many
cases, the parents are not able to detect defects in the speech of the child. By the time they realize it
may be too late. In the case of such problems and defects, the first point is that the parents should not

for the district. Personally, I think that this is terrible, having a transgender bathroom. You were either
born a boy, or a girl. I just think that you should not be born one thing and then change into something
totally different. Also, have your rights and get a bathroom to where anyone could use it. It s wrong
because someone could say they are transgender, even if they aren t, and then they could.. Who knows
what. Having these bathrooms were in

My Fair Lady Analysis
My Fair Lady is a 1964 American musical based off of a play called, Pygmalion by George Bernard
Shaw. Eliza Doolittle, who lives in London, is not very educated and does not speak very good
English. Professor Henry Higgins meets Eliza in a subway and proclaims that he could teach her how
to speak properly. Eliza agrees to let him teach her and she is taken to his home and is taught how to
be proper and if she convinced Queen Victoria that she belonged in the higher class then in return
Professor Higgins would reward her with chocolates. Professor Higgins teaches Eliza how to speak
proper English by helping her with her pronunciation of several different phrases that would teach her
how to speak properly so that no one would know that she was not actually from a high class family.
She goes on to perfect her speaking so that she could attend me the derby for her first test. She does
well but at the end she gets involved with the race and she ruins her cover and exposes herself. She
goes on to continue working hard to perfect high class tendencies. She, along with Professor Higgins,
later attend the ball for her final test. She dances and talks amongst the other guests and no one seems
to see past Eliza s act. She convinces everyone except for Colonel Pickering, who insists that she is an
imposter. Eliza carries on as if she is who she is perceiving to be. She returns home with Professor
Higgins and they all have a laugh about what had happened at the ball except for Eliza

Death Comes Swift Essay
Death comes swift. I lied awake in bed, unsure of what would happen to me now that Nan was dead.
She was all I had for the last 16 years, and while she wasn t accepting of who, what, I am... I know she
still had some love for me. My thoughts swirled in my head much as they had for the past week:
where will I go? , What if they find out about me? , What if I am discovered? I knew from my
grandmother that something terrible would happen if anyone discovered my... abilities. By the age of
nine I had been aloof and withdrawn in school, fearful that I might reveal myself to someone. She
forced me to church with her, begging the lord to extract my devil s gifts as she called them. I had one
saving grace with my abilities, she never ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I rolled the cheap rental fabric of the sleeve between my fingers before walking to my dresser and
pulling out my underwear. I grabbed a pair of plain boxers from the front and looked down at the
boring pattern. Might as well be a little different I muttered, as i pulled the old drawer all the way out,
feeling around for the pair of fitted boxer briefs I had secretly gotten for myself. The pale blue went
well with my pale skin, the spunky girl at the store said so herself. It was one of the few acts of
rebellion I had done up to that point. I still remembered how nervous I was going into the alternative
store in the local mall, I shook as I looked at all the crude jokes and sexual things inside. She came up
out of nowhere and asked if I needed any help. I stammered out No, I I m alright thanks. She must
have known I was nervous because she just smirked and said Here let s find you a souvenir. I only
nodded and followed her around the store as she asked me about what I liked, what I was into, etc. I
couldn t help but stair at her amazingly colored hair, it shimmered in the dim light like a peacocks
feathers; radiating out from a vibrant green, to blue, and purple. As we passed by the sexy underwear
section of the story, my eyes landed on the pair of underwear. Right away she noticed and said Great
choice! I bet he ll love them with a wink. I clammed up as soon as she said he , and of

Driving Through Sawmill Towns poem analysis Essay
Driving Through Sawmill Towns by Les Murray
In the high cool country, having come from the clouds, down a tilting road Into a distant valley,
You drive without haste. Your windscreen parts the forest,
Swaying and glancing, and jammed midday brilliance
Crouches in clearings...
Then you come across them,
The sawmill towns, bare hamlets built of boards
With perhaps a store,
Perhaps a bridge beyond
And a little sidelong creek alive with pebbles.
This first stanza ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This first stanza from the poem, explains the journey of a man driving through a sawmill town and his
observations. Murray describes his journey through a small sawmill town in New South Wales whilst
using strong, vivid imagery and emotive language.
As evident by the title of this poem, imagery is a strong technique used in this poem as the author
describes with great detail his journey through a sawmill town. This technique is used most in the
following phrases: ...down a tilting road, into a distant valley. And The sawmill towns, bare hamlets
built of boards with perhaps a store . This has the effect of creating an image in the reader s mind and
making the poem even more real.
There is also figurative language used in phrases such as Having come from the clouds and tilting road
. This adds to the effect of imagery and emphasis on the journey to the sawmill town. It also helps to
make the stanza more interesting to the reader.

What Were The Positive Effects Of The Modern Revolution
How the Modern Revolution had a Positive Effect On the Planet and the People Did you know that the
Modern Revolution increased the rate of innovation, energy, travel, and global exchanges? This
revolution sparked many inventions and increased global trade. The Modern Revolution was a great
moment in early modern history because it increased literacy and education, made people immune to
diseases and the inventions on weapons and warfare. Did you know only roughly 10 percent people
could read or write? The modern Revolution helped the people who were not literate by the travelers
voyaging to different places all over the world and teaching natives how to read and write. Since the

Six Stages Of Denialing In Hills Like White Elephants By...
In Hills like white elephants we identify six stages of human grief regarding to dying, and loss: denial;
isolation; anger; bargaining; depression and finally acceptance. Hemingway apparently innate
understanding and dramatization, of these stages of grief.
The first thing that comes to mind during the stages of Hill Like White Elephants was denial. There
are many significant ways that denial has been portrayed throughout the novel. When we go further
into details about the title of the story is explains it all of what we are expecting HIlls . The first
thought before I began to read the story was the title I began to realize that this story will have
moments it ups, and down. Those ups and downs lead into a problematic figure of denial between the
main antagonist Jig. While reading Novel from start to finish Jig has been denied from the reality of
life. I have come to a conclusion of this when secondly, the American as came has an attachment to
her life as her husband. Noticing further into her life I have seen a lot of negatives, mostly because
The American summarizes their relationship together. In the book the girl looks off the hills of a line
of hills and describes how they look like white elephants. In page 182 she says I ve never seen one,
the man drinks his beer. This show the grief of tension and denial, but also an interpretation of a baby
coming to life, especially from the man when he drinks the beer. This shows denial of what he is
expecting that will

Carol Vernallis A Little Piece Of Heaven
Carol Vernallis states in her analyzation paper on music videos Telling and Not Telling , quote, Music
videos do not embody complete narratives or convey finely wrought stories for numerous reasons,
some obvious some less so (CP 37). While it is true in some ways (Let s be real, if you really wanted
to make a long, well made plot with an outstanding soundtrack along, you d most likely make a
movie, not a music video), it s not impossible. It can be said that with the right writers, directors, and
artists, a high caliber music video with a solid plot that goes in hand with the song is born. This is
certainly the case for the music video of the song A Little Piece of Heaven , a rock/metal song created
by the band Avenged Sevenfold for their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But underneath the gloomy backgrounds, high amounts of blood and body parts as well as thigh heater
gags and skeleton choirs, a hidden story follows along the 8 minute long narrative. The story of a
person losing a loved one and dealing with grief (Denying the loss, feeling anger for it, try to bargain
the pain but end up depressed only to prevail, accepting things are the way need to be and moving on
as the person we lost did as well). The happy ending is there to tell the viewers it s never too late and
we should all strive for our happiness. While it may be hard to perceive, a viewer observing the video
with this idea in mind may develop a feeling of compassion as well, because it s something every
human has gone through or will eventually, as there s no avoiding death. It brings a positive message
to all, highlighting that those we love are up in a piece of heaven while we on Earth should make our
own little piece of it as well. Compared to more popular songs videos, which can just be an
amalgamation of handsome men or voluptuous women, luxuries and a lifestyle most viewers don t
have, this one stands out in thanks to it being rich in meaning, feeling and, most touching of all,
humanity. In conclusion, one final quote from the song, We fell apart, let s make a new

  • 2. Taking a Look at Racism Racism has presented itself countless times throughout the history of human existence. It exists in many forms, and its consequences have proven dire several times. The definition of racism varies depending on the dictionary, but the common theme throughout all definitions is one of intolerance or hatred toward a culture. The concept of a culture, however, is a socially constructed concept in order to classify humans based on their behavior, mannerisms, social ideals, ethnicity, age, faith, skin color, or other category deemed identifiable. Every single one of the categories created to define a culture was just that; they were created. On the grounds that culture is a social construct, by the virtue of the definitions at hand, the hatred of a culture and therefore racism is in fact a social construct. Presented with the question of What is racism and in what forms does it exist today? it can be answered in a notably extreme way with a multitude of genocides occurring throughout the world at this very moment. The very concept of a genocide is one built upon the social construct of racism that has turned violent. The continent of Africa is most known for the major genocides occurring today, such as in Darfur, Central African Republic, and many other countries within the continent. Racism at its root is taking a socially constructed category, deeming it lesser than the category that you put yourself into and using other socially constructed reasoning to justify actions ... The battle was fought by the armies of the British and French empires against the German Empire, including Australia who came to support the mother county . It took place between 1th July and 18th November 1916 on both sides of the River Somme in France. It was one of the largest battles of World War I, in which more than 1,000,000 men were wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history. (Wikipedia, 2015) The Somme offensive was planned in December 1915 and was intended as a joint French British attack. The French Commander in Chief, General Joffre, conceived the idea as a battle to reduce the German empire s strength and effectiveness through continual attack and create a distraction for the Germans to relieve some of the pressure for the French, although territorial gain was a secondary aim. (Firstworldwar.com, 2009) For a number of months, the French had been taking severe losses at the Battle of Verdun (which took place at the east of Paris). In order to take German pressure off the French, the Allied High Command attacked the Germans north of Verdun therefore requiring the Germans to move some of their men away. The first obstacle of his effort was his fairness. Ralph at the beginning of the story was voted on to be the chief. He however, saw how much it hurt Jack, that he was not picked. Ralph, trying to be fair, decided to let Jack have control of the hunters or the choir. The choir belongs to you, of course, (pg. 23) Ralph said to Jack. This gave Jack power, and left him wanting more and because he wanted what Ralph had, power, there was a tension between Jack and Ralph. The second obstacle Ralph had to overcome was his fear. Ralph learned that he had to put others first before his own wants. If Ralph did not overcome fear of being on the Island forever, the boys would have been lost to savagery from that point. Meaning they would not be governed anymore. The last obstacle Ralph had to overcome was his morals in order to govern the boys. Ralph was a character based on civilization and morals but, because the boys were losing their morals, they were losing their interest in Ralph. The boys started to relate to the savagery of Jack, than the morals of Ralph. • 8. The Importance Of Ethnic Difference In The Great Gatsby Compulsive concern over ethnic difference has always been a blended part of American culture; however, at points in the history of the United States of America this concern reached its peak. The 1920s was a period in the history of the nation during which the concern over ethnic difference heightened in an intensive, yet explicit way. The 1920s was the peak of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). This phase in history was accountable for the emergence of many thinkers such as Madison Grant, who is responsible for one of the most famous works in scientific racism, and also had a crucial role in crafting strong immigration restrictions and anti miscegenation laws within America. Additionally, the rise of other racial theorist is seen within this time such as Lothrop Stoddard, famously known for The Rising Tide of Color Against White World Supremacy, in which Stoddard describes the perils of coloured people, and their immigration to the United States. In this stage of time, with such thinkers and writers (Grant and Stoddard) gaining influence, concern over ethnic difference became evident on the surface of daily life. Although the prejudice of the 1920s is not remembered by most today, it had an important part in setting the tone of this book, The Great Gatsby. F. • 9. Cause And Effect Essay On Tsunamis Tsunami Assignment Cause Firstly tsunamis can be caused by landslides, Earthquakes and Volcanic eruptions. Most tsunamis are caused by massive earthquakes on the seafloor when parts of rock move past each other all of a sudden causing water to move. A tsunami is a large sequence of very large waves created by a sudden movement on the ocean s floor. Most earthquakes that create tsunamis happen in places around the world called the subduction zones this is where pieces of the earth s crust press up against each other. The subduction zone is where an oceanic plate is being forced down into the mantle by plate tectonic forces. The friction between the subducting plate and the overriding plate is huge. This friction helps prevent a slow and steady rate of subduction and instead the two plates become stuck. Tsunamis are caused in the open ocean and at first they can appear to be only tiny waves but they can grow very fast in size as they reach shallow water before crashing into villages, towns or even cities. How it is recorded / warnings including the use of primary and secondary waves A tsunami has a very long wavelength which can reach up to hundreds of kilometres. This means that the steepness or slope of the wave is very small so it is almost impossible to see with the human eye at first. But there are ocean observing tools that are able to detect tsunamis from a long rage now and is able to warn certain people that a Tsunami is coming. It took the National oceanic and atmospheric administration twenty years to make a reliable (tsunamograph). A tsunamograph is an instrument that gives people accurate real time data on tsunamis. There are different anchored ocean bottom pressure recorders at a depth of five thousand meters and most of the recorders area around the subduction zones since this is where most tsunamis happen all around the world. Example of recent event including damaged caused In March 2011, at 2:46pm local time the most powerful offshore earthquake hit the northeast coast of japan triggered a massive tsunami that reached the size of thirty nine meters. Firstly there was violent shaking for about three to five minutes and then the massive wave hit. The 8.9 magnitude earthquake washed away ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Studying Stress among Law Enforcement Officers In contemporary society, a police office is a bonded and warranted employee of a law enforcement organization, be it a local, regional, or state police force; a federal law agency, or a more specific correctional facility or other law enforcement organization. The specific reason society has law enforcement is that groups of people living together do not always exist in harmony, and it is the job of the police officer to maintain public order, prevent and detect criminal activity, apprehend criminals, collect evidence, and see that the due process of law is followed within their given duty range. Under the rubric of the Western democracies, the major role of the police force is to keep order and discourage crime. Their organization is also asked to assist with emergency and disaster services, emergency medical situations, and to assist citizens in need. The duties of a police officer vary so dramatically, that the safety and internal culture of a police force differs from organization to organization (e.g. a Police Office in a large metropolitan area like New York will have different duties and dangers than a County Sheriff in a rural Oklahoma area) (Barlow, 2000). Society has certain expectations of their law enforcement personnel, and that, combined with the legal aspects and internal stress resulting from the constancy of danger and dealing with the underside of society, supplies its own pressures to police officers. Officers are often in danger of infectious disease, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Though targeted primarily towards students, I feel the piece can appeal to anyone who has experienced the ambiguity and subjectivity of literary analysis. The central theme of the poem: something spurious attempting to appear legitimate, is blatantly revealed in the title. Most readers cannot decipher this meaning, however, due to the recondite nature of the term Cromulent . All remaining biblical allusions form an Garden of Eden allegory; one which elevates the narrator to god like status. Atwood created Offred to display that people desire freedom. Another example of Offred s desire of freedom to love, is evident when she explains her thoughts to the reader. It refers to the use of electronic, medical devices to give more auditory, verbal, and visual information back to the body about how it is working. For example, during biofeedback when a person tries to relax his muscles, he can hear a sound telling the degree of relaxation. Or if a person is to slow his pulse, he can hear or see his pulses more easily than by just feeling the pulse. By hearing the pulse, it is easier to try to manipulate it with his conscious control. This is also done with temperature control. When people are nervous, their hands might get colder or sweaty and warmer. Different Methods For Cleaning Water b.t = Before treatment Submission Date 3/1/2016 a.t = After treatment Nathaniel Cheng, Benjamin Sullivan, Connor McCarthy 6W Water Quality Summary: In this experiment, different methods for cleaning water were used to see how they affected the water quality. The hypothesis was that boiling water and then pouring it through a carbon sac would clean the pond water effectively. This is because when the water is boiled, it kills most bacteria and evaporates chlorine. Then the carbon filter would clear out the suspended matter and some chemicals such as nitrate. The hypothesis was correct in that most of the measurement categories except for turbidity because the carbon sac accidentally made the water turn black ish. A source of error was that the 225 ml sample had to be split into three containers but it was not split. This was fixed by splitting the remaining water into two containers and then running it through the procedure again and measuring that. In the end, the method was good for cleaning water but could not instantly make dirty pond water drinkable. Introduction The objective is to see how boiling water and then pouring it through a carbon sac will improve water quality. Over the course of the Foreword, it covers what Susan Burton does, how she is helping many individuals, and essentially saving lives of those in need, much like Harriet Tubman did. This is where it comes from! I know now something very bad! Some terrible thing coming closer and closer (Adams 7). This is foreshadowing because it gives an idea of what is going to happen in the future of the story and later in the book something terrible did happen.
