Examples Of Allusions In Secret Life Of Bees
Biblical Allusion 1 The Virgin Mary An allusion is a literary device to express a reference to another
piece of media. Allusions are used frequently in A Secret life of Bees to influence the characters
personality traits and underlying story themes. In the novel, Sue Mon Kidd uses constant allusions to
the Virgin Mary. She writes using Lily s voice, Looking back on it now, I want to say the bees were
sent to me. I want to say they showed up like the angel Gabriel appearing to the Virgin Mary, setting
events in motion I could never have guessed. Page 2. This is an example of a biblical allusion. The
Virgin Mary was the virgin mother of Jesus Christ. She was a 1st century BC Galilean Jewish woman
of Nazareth according to the New Testament and the Holy Quran. In the novel Secret Life of Bees, she
is often cited as the blessed Mary or blessed among women by the followers of Mary. How does it

Our Lady of Chains they call her, she represents the ultimate feminine mother figure, a powerful
symbolic representation of comfort, compassion, and strength. She was black as she could be, twisted
like driftwood from being out in the weather, her face a map of all storms and journeey s she d been
through. Her right arm was raised, as if she was pointing the way, except her fingers were closed in a
fist. It gave her a serious look, like she could straighten you out if necessary. (4.29 30). Lily grieves
the loss of her own mother. The death of Deborah Fontanel Owens have left Lily without guidance of
a monarchal figure in her life, excluding Rosaleen. Due to her need for a female figure of guidance,
she is attracted to The Black Madonna s prospective to fill that empty gap. When she visits the statue
late into the night, Lily thinks: I live in a hive of darkness, and you are my mother, I told her. You are
the mother of thousands.

Essay on Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson He is best remembered as a great president and as the author of the Declaration of
Independence. He also won lasting fame as a diplomat, a political thinker, and a founder of the
Democratic Party. Jefferson s interests and talents covered an amazing range. He became one of the
leading American architects of his time and designed the Virginia Capitol, the University of Virginia,
and his own home, Monticello. He greatly appreciated art and music and tried to encourage their
advancement in the United States. He arranged for the famous French sculptor Jean Houdon to come
to America to make a statue of George Washington. Jefferson also posed for Houdon and for the

(Thomas Jefferson, an intimate history [by] Fawn M. Brodie. Published: New York, Norton [1974])
Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, at Shadwell, the family farm in Goochland (now
Albemarle) County, Virginia. (The date was April 2 by the calendar then in use.) He was the third
child in the family and grew up with six sisters and one brother. Two other brothers died in infancy.
His father, Peter Jefferson, had served as surveyor, sheriff, colonel of militia, and member of the
House of Burgesses. Thomas s mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, came from one of the oldest families
in Virginia. Thomas developed the normal interests of a country boy #8212;hunting, fishing,
horseback riding, and canoeing. He also learned to play the violin and to love music. Jefferson was 14
years old when his father died. As the oldest son, he became head of the family. He inherited more
than 2,500 acres (1,010 hectares) of land and at least 20 slaves. His guardian, John Harvie, managed
the estate until Jefferson was 21. Thomas began his studies under a tutor. At age 9, he went to live
with a Scottish clergyman, who taught him Latin, Greek, and French. After his father died, Thomas
entered the school of James Maury, an Anglican clergyman, near Charlottesville. (Thomas Jefferson :

Specific Heat Capacity Lab
Purpose/ Research Question: Determine the specific heat capacity of two unknown metals. Find two
Ionic compounds out of the several given chemicals that would synthesize in the product of the most
effective hand warmer. Hypothesis: For both metals one and two, we can calculate the specific heat
capacity within five percent error. The ideal hand warmer for cost, toxicity, and heat given off would
include 5.0 g Magnesium Sulfate (MgSO4) and 10 mL of deionized water. Procedures: We set up an
appropriate apparatus including a Styrofoam calorimeter cup containing room temperature deionized
water, two thermometers, and a clean beaker also containing deionized water directly on a heat source.
After heating up the water until its boiling point, we recorded the mass of each metal and carefully
placed the selected metal inside the boiling water until the temperature of the water containing the
metal was constant. Quickly, we placed the hot metal from the boiling water in the calorimeter cup
containing room temperature water ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We calculated the specific heat of metal one to be 0.39 J/g℃ which correlates to the exact specific
heat capacity of element 30 Zinc. For metal two, we calculated the specific heat capacity to be 0.38
J/g℃ which was close to the actual specific heat of element 23 Iron. The specific heat capacity of Iron
was 0.45 J/g℃. Our inaccuracy could be a result of not reading the thermometer as accurately as we
could have. To improve yield in the future, we could make sure we record more accurate temperatures.
I also accept my hypothesis on the most effective hand warmer. In terms of heat given off, toxicity,
and price, Magnesium Sulfate was indeed the best choice for a hand warmer because when compared
to the other given chemicals, it was the most exothermic in water, it is relatively nontoxic, and is very

How Does Mark Twain Use Humor In Huckleberry Finn
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, was born November 30, 1835 in Florida,
Missouri. Twain is known for his famous works such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The
Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which was his inspiration for the
setting of these two classic novels. His childhood was not the brightest while living in Hannibal, and
he incorporated the hardships he witnessed, as well as indured, into his writing with the use of humor.
By doing so, Mark Twain became a famous American Literature author that impacted society by
providing a new perspective of human nature through his use of humor in his writing.

His work has been exhibited and analyzed by people with all kinds of different perspectives. Although
there are so many perspectives on his work, they are generally similar in the sense that most of the
readers find his stories to be phenomenal. Today, he is praised for his contributions to literature.
Famous author, Ernest Hemingway, even went so far as to announce that all modern American
literature comes from Huckleberry Finn. However, critics were not always so accepting of his work.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is known as the first major novel in which the narrator speaks in
dialect. This new style left some critics appalled by the sudden change in literature that would be
initiated by Twain. If Mr. [Samuel] Clemens [Mark Twain] cannot think of something better to tell our

Socrates s Influence On European Culture
Although Socrates never wrote even one book in his life, his thinking and ideas produce an important
impact on European culture. Socrates has always been seen as a saint who died because pursuit for
truth. He claims that he is a sort of gadfly, given to the state by the God, and proud of it. Eventually,
he was charged by Athenian democrats with corrupt the Athenian youth and other charges, and died by
drinking poison in 339BC. In the trial, Socrates refused to intercede for himself. His words which he
speaks in the court, record by his student, Plato. Then we know that he said: An unexamined life is not
worth living.
The unexamined life is not worth living, the individual, special, and unique personality and life, and
the realization of the value of life can only create based on self examination. Also, if we want to self
examine, we cannot without reading and thinking.
What is the unexamined life? In my opinion, the life which is following the crowd, simply copying
other s lives, and only pursues the material enjoyment, is the unexamined life. However, the life like
this is seemed to be the most common life. In this world, the vast majorities of human beings has a
similar or same course of life go to school, go to work, get marriage, have children and so on. If you
ask a person, why do you do this work? I think the most possibility answer might be: I want to buy a
car, or I want to buy a house and others in short, he or she is hoping for a better living environment,

A Summary Of The Neutralization Theory
Sykes and Matza introduced the neutralization theory in 1957. This theory explains wrongdoing and
misconduct recommends that criminal conduct be found out as procedure of social cooperation. This
study is concerned with qualities of denounced aggressive behavior at home guilty parties.
Accordingly, there has been much research mirroring the way that after victimized people break the
association with their abuser, ill used victimized people frequently float into different association with
an alternate abuser. Martza states, the law contains the seeds of its own neutralization (Marta, 1964).
For Instance, seeds exist in ideas, for example; understudy, self protection, craziness, and mischance.

The general strain theory of wrongdoing states strain or anxiety is an important source or criminal

Doing Business In Mexico Essay
Doing Business in Mexico
Mexico is one of the largest and most open economies in the world. It has only a handful of strategic
sectors or industries not yet open to private investment. Mexico is forecasting an economic growth
rate between 2% and 3% over the next fiscal year so it is important to understand the different aspects
of what is involved with doing business in Mexico. Basic geographical information, cultural diversity,
and proper business etiquette will all play a large role in business operations.
Mexico is bordered by the United States to the north and Belize and Guatemala to the southeast.
Mexico is about one fifth the size of the United States. Baja California in the west is an 800 mile
peninsula that forms the Gulf of California. In the east are the Gulf of Mexico and the Bay of
Campeche, which is formed by Mexico s other peninsula, the Yucatán. The center of Mexico is a
great, high plateau, open to the north, with mountain chains on the east and west and with ocean front
lowlands beyond. The diversity of the Mexican geography lends itself nicely to many different forms
of business (infoplease).
With an estimated population of 125,531,053 in 2015, Mexico is the eleventh most populous nation in
the world. It is also the most populous Spanish speaking country in the on Earth. Mexico s population

Zone Of Proximal Development Essay
Zone of proximal development and Scaffolding learning
The main contents of sociocultural theory include: mediation, zone of proximal development, private
and inner speech as well as activity theory. And the zone of proximal development(ZPD) which was
first put forward by Lev Vygotsky was considered as an another major concept in this theory. It is
actually the gap between actual competence level (what problem level a child is able to independently
solve), and the potential development level (what problem level could a child solve with guidance
from a tutor). In Vygotsky s view, learning is an interactive, interpersonal activity. The learner can
continue expose to knowledge through the social interaction and internalize the external knowledge.
Based on the above ideological foundation, the concept of scaffolding Instruction was put forward.
Cognitive development in the zone of proximal development stresses the role of a social partner of the
student (a teacher or a more skilled person). The instructor becomes a supportive tool for the student
to set up their own structure of knowledge by instructive language. And the knowledge of language in

and did not reflect the reality of acquisition in natural conditions. And then, third, I supposed that
some experiments were lack of long term study. The last thing, the sociocultural theory was rarely

The Sitcom Of Television By William Asher s Bewitched ...
Situation comedies, or sitcoms for short, first began between 1946 and 1947 in the United Kingdom
when broadcast station BBC aired Pinwright s Progress (Aaron,2014). The United States soon
followed airing their first sitcom in 1950. William Asher has been credited with being the man who
invented the sitcom, having directed over two dozen of the leading sitcoms from the 1950s through the
1970s (Cook, 1999). Some of Asher s finest works include Bewitched and I Love Lucy , classics that
are still around today. Although situation comedies have been able to withstand time, even with new
evolving technology that allows a high focus on effects that have allowed science fiction shows to
thrive, they are far from where they began from William Asher s time.
Television has always portrayed the culture of the time and in the 1950s a very domestic picture was
painted. Family, marriage, and an obedient housewife were all a common factor in sitcoms during this
time. Contrary to popular belief, sitcoms in the 1950s rarely portrayed men as loving, doting,
patriarchs, but rather as distant providers of the family with stick and stern rules for both their children
and wife. (Anderson, 2012). Although television has changed rapidly since the 1950s I argue that the
representation of men in sitcoms have evolved very little over time. Using both sitcoms from the 1950
s and today I plan to prove that an emphasis on masculinity and male dominance have remained a
common underlying theme since

When we think of cardio vascular diseases, we usually always associate them with the loss of a family

the ancient times, there have been clues left showing possible cardio vascular diseases within the
Egyptian families. The earliest proof of a cardio vascular disease is of a 3,500 year old Egyptian

next few centuries little is known about cardio vascular diseases and the death rate subsequently is

Premature atrial contractions are early additional beats that start in the atria and are usually innocuous
and usually don t require medical attention. Premature ventricular contractions are one of the most
prevailing arrhythmia where the heart will skip a beat due to stress, caffeine overindulgence, or
excessive exercise. Some people who have frequent contractions should seek medical attention, but if
it is irregular it is usually harmless. Atrial fibrillation is quite frequent which causes the atria to
contract out of rhythm. Atrial flutter is a more organized version of atrial fibrillation where it s caused
by one or many rapid circuits in the atria. Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia originates above
the ventricle and is known as a rapid heart rate. Accessory pathway tachycardias are a form of rapid
heart rate that is due to extra passageway between the ventricles and atria. AV nodal reentrant
tachycardia is another form of rapid heart rate that is caused through more than one passageway.
These can both be treated with special therapy or medication. Ventricular tachycardia is a hasty
heartbeat that begins in the ventricle section of the heart. This hasty beat prevents the heart from
attaining the right amount of blood to fill up, thus causing the body to receive much less blood than
usual. Ventricular fibrillations are inconsistent impulses from the ventricles

sponsors of the bill believed the initiative would accelerate motor fuel savings nationwide and provide

Now that the program has ended, data extrapolated and calculated, and in conjunction with our best
presumptions regarding H.R. 1550, our primary focus is to evaluate said data and conclude whether or
not the policy should be implemented again. We speculate the Cash for Clunkers program was
successful and helpful to the consumer as a whole.
Cash for Clunkers was never intended to be a long term solution to the economic recession; it was
meant to provide a catalyst for short term recovery in an attempt to boost the economy through
spending and the creation of jobs. The economic theory behind the program was that by increasing
consumer spending, secondary factors would inherently improve as a result of increase in demand via
Trickle Down theory. The program was also meant to be a stimulus to the automotive industry.
According to The Economist, the intent was a jump start the consumption of durable goods, a boost
the hard hit car industry, and an improvement in the fuel efficiency of America s fleet (The
Economist). But, many organizations, such as aftermarket parts suppliers and auto body paint
companies, opposed the program. Organizations such as these would lose producer surplus since new
vehicles would be covered under manufacturer warranties. The older vehicles were required to be
disabled and the parts melted down.
Initially and throughout implementation, the economists responsible for the

Social Disorganization Theory And Cultural Deviance Theory
As criminologist continue research on the sociological theories as it relates to the social structure,
social process and the impact of social life. There is still room to compare and contrast the social

theory. The social disorganization theory was first referenced with the displacement among
immigrants. Scholars believed this was due to the immigrants inability to transfer norms and values

structure theory the strain principle is addressed. It deals with the pressure that individuals encounter
when attempting to reach socially determined goals (Schmalleger, 2012). In the field of criminology
the strain theory is associated with resulting to deviant behavior as a way to solve the frustrations of
social environment. The term anomie was used by Robert Merton in the strain theory as the condition
and single encounter when the means to achieve goals are limited to particular groups. However
anomie was first introduced by Emile Durkheim in 1897. Durkheim associated the term anomie and
normlessness or deregulation which progresses to deviant behavior, because of decreased proper
control over actions. These practices cause people to struggle with their position in society and
making adjustments to life (Schmalleger, 2012). Merton expounded on the anomie concept where

Rembrandt and The Western Art
Rembrandt uses oil on wood in one of his earliest self portraits, depicting himself in a fabulous
costume that includes a plumed hat, a silk scarf, and an elegant jacket complete with gold trim. There
is a heavy use of shadow, concealing half of his face, with the left half being illuminated by a sole
source of light located out of the frame. His face purposefully lacks an expression, as if to create an
open ended illusion of confusion. Unlike most of his works, this painting is quite large, having
dimensions of 35 by 29 square inches. Although Rembrandt had already begun to attract serious
attention, he had not yet received any portrait commissions by 1629, so this piece may have been
created to show off his artistic abilities. This self portrait currently resides in the Isabella Gardner
Museum after it was purchased in 1896 from a private collector, Lieutenant Colonel Sawyer.8 Shortly
after he painted his self portrait at age 23, Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam in 1631, where he first
began officially working as a professional portraitist. By that time, he had begun to gain recognition
and stardom for his world class portraits. Rembrandt was living in the house of Hendrick van
Uylenburgh, a Dutch art dealer, who introduced Rembrandt to his cousin, Saskia van Uylenburgh,
whom Rembrandt married in 1634. This relationship only further progressed his career, bringing him

The Golden Age And The Golden Age
I have found myself thinking back to the first grade when comparing my time in that period of my life
to the golden age. In the first grade I relied on people more than ever for the basic necessities that I
needed at that time. I was sent to Bancroft Elementary School and it is located in Andover,
Massachusetts. At this point I was somewhat unknowingly guided through the first grade and it ended
up sharing many similarities with the golden age. The golden age is when man did not have to worry
about what is needed in the basic human life, this includes fighting, food, shelter, and justice. In this
young grade I recall vividly of not having a worry for any necessities that play a key part in everyday
life. When I was told to go to lunch I ended up eating the food given, but I was knowledgeable on how
it got on my plate; moreover, there seemed to be peace and a lack of physical violence throughout the
grade. This thought of having peace, food, little work, and having a roof over your head in the first
grade shares many similarities with what man experienced in the golden age.
In the first grade I did not understand the idea where justice and peace develops from; however,
reflecting on this now I can understand how this is something that I would have found to be
insignificant while being in the first grade. When I went to the first grade the safety protocols were not
as commonly practiced as they are current day. I had felt a sense of safety even though I may not have

The Material Flow And Variable Chances For Improvement
Abstract: Among the challenges faced by manufacturers in mean time, Improvement in material
efficiency and the impact of material on environment are given most priority. Presently, managements
mainly focus on maximizing outputs in economic terms but not on the damage caused due to
processing and disposal of material. Few methods can determine the product s impact on environment
but no method can assess the material efficiency in production system. This Journal Material Flow
Assessment in Manufacturing System shows the framework for effective material flow and variable
chances for improvement. Introduction: Resource Efficient Manufacturing (REM) focuses on reducing
production costs like labor, material, energy costs and to maximize profits, increasing output sales.
Certain tools for REM such as lean manufacturing and process optimization seems to be inadequate to
meet sustainability goals. Resources which has greater financial impact on business are mainly
focused by managers and given higher priority. Availability of resources is linked with other sources,
the degree of scarcity of certain source is specified to both region and season. Material Efficiency
Strategies: The provision of product with less material production has clear environmental benefits as
the decreased amount of material used in production will ultimately reduce the impact on
environment. MES are grouped as design changes and process changes. Material elimination,
minimization, reducing yield losses and

The United States Collective Identity
A true basis of what it means to be an American can be thoroughly argued on the grounds of what
constitutes an American, is an American born or is an American made? The collective identity of the
American populace is the shared characteristics, the same drive, which ultimately results in oneness.
The unique American cultural identity is the shared revolutionary nature, which drives Americans
toward progressive social changes. The original thirteen colonies faced a rather odd situation in their
nascent years. Far enough away from Britain to not completely live under their control, the colonies
began to form a new way of defining themselves. Rather than simply being British colonies they
wanted to act as a sovereign nation in their own right. Fearful of the colonies gaining too much power
the British government implemented a set of Acts, such as the Intolerable Act and the Stamp Act, with
the intention of them limiting the colonies freedoms and smothering any chance of rebellion.
However, the colonist took this as an act of oppression instead and rose above it in order to regain
their personal freedoms. They felt that their society had plateaued into mediocrity under the rule of
King George as they didn t have protected rights (The American Pageant, 126 133). In the hopes of
ridding themselves of the British rule war broke out, the crude colonist soldiers fighting against the
well polished British army, something revolutionary all in itself as it has never been done

Photosynthesis of Elodea
Photosynthesis
Abstract: An experiment was carried out to determine how certain factors such as light intensity and
availability of carbon dioxide, affected the rate of photosynthesis. The rate of photosynthesis was
measure by the amount of oxygen produce (cm3/min).
A valid conclusion was made and most of the results were in accordance with the prediction, although
there were some anomalies present. The errors and limitations were evaluated and some improvements
were suggested.
Introduction:
Photosynthesis is an essential importance to organisms. It is the process by which green plants and a
few organisms convert sunlight energy into chemical energy which is stored in molecules.

Elodea was cut up into a 10cm length piece and bottom of stem was cut off allowing water to flow
through the xylem (use the same piece, allowing more accurate results) 2. ¾ of a 500mL beaker was
filled with tap water 3. A glass funnel was placed in the beaker, along with the elodea (as shown in the
apparatus above) 4. A test tube was filled ¾ with water 5. The test tube was then quickly flipped over
and was placed on top of the funnel (a shown in the apparatus above) 6. Used a marker to mark where
the water level of the test tube started 7. 10 seconds was allowed for the elodea to begin the process of
photosynthesis 8. The beaker containing the elodea was then moved to a certain distance 9. After the
lamp was switched on and was left turned on for 5 minutes 10. After 5 minutes, the new water level
was recorded 11. This process was repeated at various distances 12. This process was repeated again,
however as a replacement for changing distance away from lamp, concentration of NaHCO3 were
changed (excluding the lamp)

Spidey s Last Questions
They should have thought this through it would have saved them so much trouble. Doom was bound
to come back from there at some point, right? They could ve attacked him as soon as he was back to a
warmer climate, not when he was at actual hypodermic freezing levels. Not, whenever one of their
teammates was on the brink of death, without Doctor Doom even remotely close to them.
Anyways, it s not like they actually thought any of this was going to happen. How were they supposed
to know? Realistically, maybe they should have asked questions. . . . But, they didn t ask questions,
after all, they ve known Spidey for quite some time.
Maybe they should have known? It would ve saved a lot of trouble.

At first, Spidey was super confused and embarrassed about it. Spider Man found it super awkward and
once didn t talk to Johnny for a whole week. However, Spidey grew used to it and even flirts back (it s
just a response, but Johnny refers to it as flirting). Sadly, none of his attempts of flirting with Spidey
worked.
It was a regular occurence, his failures of wooing Spider Man. Even worse, his whole family would
tease him over his failed attmepts. Ben would smirk and laugh at his attempts right then and there,
right in front of Spidey. Reed just pretended it did happen around Spidey, and then tease Johnny when
they were alone or with the rest of the Fantastic Four. Sue, on the other hand, was more worried that
his attempts were pressuring Spidey. But, she still made fun of him if she really felt like it.
Johnny didn t care that much, though (unless the teasing happened in front of Spidey). Spider Man just

Summary Of The Mirror By Virginia Woolf
The way one person perceives the world is not always the way another perceives, just as a reflection
shows a person but reflected backwards. The mirror does not create falsehood; it instead shows the
views of every side. Every person is going to see something different when looking into the mirror
depending on where they stand. When Virginia Woolf writes she tells the world of an idea everybody
can relate to. She writes on women and men and shows how they related through the mirror.
Sometimes to empower and others to educate those that don t have that view point or understand. She
writes both the common and uncommon views and shows how they both stand together in one mirror.
Two text which reflect two Ideas through the mirror to show the world are Professions for Women and
Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid. Ladies are well represented in Virginia Woolf s stories such as
Professions for Women and Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid. Both of these Texts reflect the standard
for women at this time. In Professions for women Virginia Woolf tells of her story of being a women;
showing her views of the world through reflection of her life. Virginia Woolf starts by creating
powerful small ideas when she writes, it is true, I am a women; it is true I am employed, but what
professional experiences have I had? Using her short chops of information she has simplified herself
so that more people can see her in their mirror. This is great because it simplifies Woolf making her
more common,

A Summary Of Phaseolus
Abstract
The sclerenchyma ring in the stem of Phaseolus lunatus, commonly known as lima bean, was
measured in relation to the wavelength of light they were grown in (650, 475 nm). It was hypothesized
that wavelength of light affects plant growth. It was predicted that plants grown when exposed to red
light (650 nm) would grow taller and therefore have thicker sclerenchyma cell rings . The results of
the t test failed to support both the hypothesis and prediction (P = 0.444599). When compared to other
studies, this experiment appears to have skewed data; therefore, although the hypothesis was rejected,
there is still evidence supporting the concept of a full spectrum of light is essential for proper plant
development.
Introduction

This seems to go against our findings being that blue light does not stimulate gibberellin production
enough that it would create a noticeable difference and therefore not have a height difference. This
suggest that the higher energy blue light might simply be received better by the plants in his study
allowing for an increase in energy production allowing more growth. It is possible that our hypothesis
was rejected due to human error, as when estimating the space the sclerenchyma tissue took up or
even a mechanical over sight such as a low wattage bulbs simulating growth in low light conditions.
That being said it was found that plants grown in low light conditions would have a smaller mass:
length ratio than those grown in a full spectrum (Magda et al. 2006). This would actual support our
findings for the specified conditions being that even if a plant did grow taller it may not develop more
tissue because of the low light

Influenza Vaccines And The Flu Vaccine
Influenza Vaccines
Summary
This paper explores published works related to patients who received the flu vaccine who were sixty
five years and older. The evaluated articles examine the effectiveness the flu vaccine had on the
patient population of sixty five years and older in relation to avoiding the flu and pneumonia diseases
and hospitalizations, in this group of patients. It has been conceded for years that senior adults age
sixty five and older are at greater risk from an influenza illness and pneumonia than a vigorous young
adult. It has been projected that between 71 percent and 85 percent of seasonal flu related loss of life
have happened in people sixty five years and older and between 54 percent and 70 percent of seasonal

Qualitative and Quantitative Studies
In patients sixty five years and older how does the use of an influenza vaccine contrasted to not
obtaining the vaccine reduce their chance of acquiring pneumonia during the flu season? In 2005,
pneumococcal disease and influenza were the eighth leading cause of death in the United States and
the primary cause of infection related mortality for all age groups (Assaad, El Masri, Porhayman, El
Sohl, 2012, p. 453). Vaccination for influenza is widely identifiable as one of the most efficient and
cost effective public health interventions. (Wheelock, Thomson, Sevdalis, 2013, p. 893).
Approximately 90% of deaths caused by these illnesses occur among adults sixty five years of age or
older. It is hypothesized that the impairment to the airway epithelial lining triggered by influenza
fosters bacterial growth, and that in turn bacterium derived proteases boost virus related virulence.
There are several studies that have been established that show vaccinating the population of older
patients, aged sixty five and older, has shown a decrease in developing pneumonia during flu season.
In a sizable study that included Swedish patients aged ≥ than 65 years old showed that immunization
with the flu vaccine resulted in a 29% decrease in the occurrence of all cause pneumonia and a 35%
drop in the death rate from all cause pneumonia in the vaccine group. Moreover, patients who were
admitted in the hospital for influenza or

Ganglion Cyst Research Paper
A ganglion cyst is a noncancerous, fluid filled lump that occurs near joints or tendons. The ganglion
cyst grows out of a joint or the lining of a tendon. It most often develops in the hand or wrist but can
also develop in the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle, or foot. The round or oval ganglion can be pea
sized or larger than a grape. Increased activity may enlarge the size of the cyst because more fluid
starts to build up. CAUSES It is not known what causes a ganglion cyst to grow. However, it may be
related to: Inflammation or irritation around the joint. An injury. Repetitive movements or overuse.
Arthritis. RISK FACTORS Risk factors include: Being a woman. Being between the ages of 20 50.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tingling. Pain. Numbness. Muscle weakness. Weak grip. Less movement in your joints. DIAGNOSIS
Ganglion cysts are most often diagnosed based on a physical exam. Your health care provider will feel
the lump and may shine a light alongside it. If it is a ganglion, a light often shines through it. Your
health care provider may order an X ray, ultrasound, or MRI to rule out other conditions.
TREATMENT Ganglions usually go away on their own without treatment. If pain or other symptoms
are involved, treatment may be needed. Treatment is also needed if the ganglion limits your movement
or if it gets infected. Treatment may include: Wearing a wrist or finger brace or splint. Taking anti
inflammatory medicine. Draining fluid from the lump with a needle (aspiration). Injecting a steroid
into the joint. Surgery to remove the ganglion cyst. HOME CARE INSTRUCTIONS Do not press on
the ganglion, poke it with a needle, or hit it. Take medicines only as directed by your health care
provider. Wear your brace or splint as directed by your health care provider. Watch your ganglion cyst

2000 Dbq Analysis
Communists in the twentieth century did nothing to help the revolution for women s rights. The
revolution ended up progressively getting better, but the communists did not aid in helping. In fact,
communist ideas ended up destroying communism. In the 1900s, communism started in China; this
ended up not working in the long run. In 1926, the communist party had begun but had gotten no
control. A member of the Bolshevik government, Alexandra Kollontai, had decided to work for the
liberation of women when she saw how little the government concerned itself with the fate of women.

  • 2. Examples Of Allusions In Secret Life Of Bees Biblical Allusion 1 The Virgin Mary An allusion is a literary device to express a reference to another piece of media. Allusions are used frequently in A Secret life of Bees to influence the characters personality traits and underlying story themes. In the novel, Sue Mon Kidd uses constant allusions to the Virgin Mary. She writes using Lily s voice, Looking back on it now, I want to say the bees were sent to me. I want to say they showed up like the angel Gabriel appearing to the Virgin Mary, setting events in motion I could never have guessed. Page 2. This is an example of a biblical allusion. The Virgin Mary was the virgin mother of Jesus Christ. She was a 1st century BC Galilean Jewish woman of Nazareth according to the New Testament and the Holy Quran. In the novel Secret Life of Bees, she is often cited as the blessed Mary or blessed among women by the followers of Mary. How does it connect to Lily? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Our Lady of Chains they call her, she represents the ultimate feminine mother figure, a powerful symbolic representation of comfort, compassion, and strength. She was black as she could be, twisted like driftwood from being out in the weather, her face a map of all storms and journeey s she d been through. Her right arm was raised, as if she was pointing the way, except her fingers were closed in a fist. It gave her a serious look, like she could straighten you out if necessary. (4.29 30). Lily grieves the loss of her own mother. The death of Deborah Fontanel Owens have left Lily without guidance of a monarchal figure in her life, excluding Rosaleen. Due to her need for a female figure of guidance, she is attracted to The Black Madonna s prospective to fill that empty gap. When she visits the statue late into the night, Lily thinks: I live in a hive of darkness, and you are my mother, I told her. You are the mother of thousands. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Published: New York, Norton [1974]) Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, at Shadwell, the family farm in Goochland (now Albemarle) County, Virginia. (The date was April 2 by the calendar then in use.) He was the third child in the family and grew up with six sisters and one brother. Two other brothers died in infancy. His father, Peter Jefferson, had served as surveyor, sheriff, colonel of militia, and member of the House of Burgesses. Thomas s mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, came from one of the oldest families in Virginia. Thomas developed the normal interests of a country boy #8212;hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and canoeing. He also learned to play the violin and to love music. Jefferson was 14 years old when his father died. As the oldest son, he became head of the family. He inherited more than 2,500 acres (1,010 hectares) of land and at least 20 slaves. His guardian, John Harvie, managed the estate until Jefferson was 21. Thomas began his studies under a tutor. At age 9, he went to live with a Scottish clergyman, who taught him Latin, Greek, and French. After his father died, Thomas entered the school of James Maury, an Anglican clergyman, near Charlottesville. (Thomas Jefferson : a life / Willard Sterne Randall. Published: New ... • 4. Specific Heat Capacity Lab Purpose/ Research Question: Determine the specific heat capacity of two unknown metals. Find two Ionic compounds out of the several given chemicals that would synthesize in the product of the most effective hand warmer. Hypothesis: For both metals one and two, we can calculate the specific heat capacity within five percent error. The ideal hand warmer for cost, toxicity, and heat given off would include 5.0 g Magnesium Sulfate (MgSO4) and 10 mL of deionized water. Procedures: We set up an appropriate apparatus including a Styrofoam calorimeter cup containing room temperature deionized water, two thermometers, and a clean beaker also containing deionized water directly on a heat source. After heating up the water until its boiling point, we recorded the mass of each metal and carefully placed the selected metal inside the boiling water until the temperature of the water containing the metal was constant. Quickly, we placed the hot metal from the boiling water in the calorimeter cup containing room temperature water ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We calculated the specific heat of metal one to be 0.39 J/g℃ which correlates to the exact specific heat capacity of element 30 Zinc. For metal two, we calculated the specific heat capacity to be 0.38 J/g℃ which was close to the actual specific heat of element 23 Iron. The specific heat capacity of Iron was 0.45 J/g℃. Our inaccuracy could be a result of not reading the thermometer as accurately as we could have. To improve yield in the future, we could make sure we record more accurate temperatures. I also accept my hypothesis on the most effective hand warmer. In terms of heat given off, toxicity, and price, Magnesium Sulfate was indeed the best choice for a hand warmer because when compared to the other given chemicals, it was the most exothermic in water, it is relatively nontoxic, and is very ... • 12. Zone Of Proximal Development Essay Zone of proximal development and Scaffolding learning The main contents of sociocultural theory include: mediation, zone of proximal development, private and inner speech as well as activity theory. And the zone of proximal development(ZPD) which was first put forward by Lev Vygotsky was considered as an another major concept in this theory. It is actually the gap between actual competence level (what problem level a child is able to independently solve), and the potential development level (what problem level could a child solve with guidance from a tutor). In Vygotsky s view, learning is an interactive, interpersonal activity. The learner can continue expose to knowledge through the social interaction and internalize the external knowledge. Based on the above ideological foundation, the concept of scaffolding Instruction was put forward. Cognitive development in the zone of proximal development stresses the role of a social partner of the student (a teacher or a more skilled person). • 13. The Sitcom Of Television By William Asher s Bewitched ... Situation comedies, or sitcoms for short, first began between 1946 and 1947 in the United Kingdom when broadcast station BBC aired Pinwright s Progress (Aaron,2014). The United States soon followed airing their first sitcom in 1950. William Asher has been credited with being the man who invented the sitcom, having directed over two dozen of the leading sitcoms from the 1950s through the 1970s (Cook, 1999). Some of Asher s finest works include Bewitched and I Love Lucy , classics that are still around today. Although situation comedies have been able to withstand time, even with new evolving technology that allows a high focus on effects that have allowed science fiction shows to thrive, they are far from where they began from William Asher s time. Television has always portrayed the culture of the time and in the 1950s a very domestic picture was painted. Family, marriage, and an obedient housewife were all a common factor in sitcoms during this time. Contrary to popular belief, sitcoms in the 1950s rarely portrayed men as loving, doting, patriarchs, but rather as distant providers of the family with stick and stern rules for both their children and wife. (Anderson, 2012). Although television has changed rapidly since the 1950s I argue that the representation of men in sitcoms have evolved very little over time. Using both sitcoms from the 1950 s and today I plan to prove that an emphasis on masculinity and male dominance have remained a common underlying theme since ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Almost everyone knows of someone who is affected by these tragic diseases. Since the ancient times, there have been clues left showing possible cardio vascular diseases within the Egyptian families. The earliest proof of a cardio vascular disease is of a 3,500 year old Egyptian mummy with a serious case of arthrosclerosis, which was identified via modern CT scan. During the next few centuries little is known about cardio vascular diseases and the death rate subsequently is low, until the turn of the Industrial age. Premature atrial contractions are early additional beats that start in the atria and are usually innocuous and usually don t require medical attention. Premature ventricular contractions are one of the most prevailing arrhythmia where the heart will skip a beat due to stress, caffeine overindulgence, or excessive exercise. Some people who have frequent contractions should seek medical attention, but if it is irregular it is usually harmless. Atrial fibrillation is quite frequent which causes the atria to contract out of rhythm. Atrial flutter is a more organized version of atrial fibrillation where it s caused by one or many rapid circuits in the atria. Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia originates above the ventricle and is known as a rapid heart rate. Accessory pathway tachycardias are a form of rapid heart rate that is due to extra passageway between the ventricles and atria. AV nodal reentrant tachycardia is another form of rapid heart rate that is caused through more than one passageway. These can both be treated with special therapy or medication. Ventricular tachycardia is a hasty heartbeat that begins in the ventricle section of the heart. This hasty beat prevents the heart from attaining the right amount of blood to fill up, thus causing the body to receive much less blood than usual. Now that the program has ended, data extrapolated and calculated, and in conjunction with our best presumptions regarding H.R. 1550, our primary focus is to evaluate said data and conclude whether or not the policy should be implemented again. We speculate the Cash for Clunkers program was successful and helpful to the consumer as a whole. Cash for Clunkers was never intended to be a long term solution to the economic recession; it was meant to provide a catalyst for short term recovery in an attempt to boost the economy through spending and the creation of jobs. The economic theory behind the program was that by increasing consumer spending, secondary factors would inherently improve as a result of increase in demand via Trickle Down theory. The program was also meant to be a stimulus to the automotive industry. According to The Economist, the intent was a jump start the consumption of durable goods, a boost the hard hit car industry, and an improvement in the fuel efficiency of America s fleet (The Economist). But, many organizations, such as aftermarket parts suppliers and auto body paint companies, opposed the program. Organizations such as these would lose producer surplus since new vehicles would be covered under manufacturer warranties. The older vehicles were required to be disabled and the parts melted down. Social Disorganization Theory And Cultural Deviance Theory As criminologist continue research on the sociological theories as it relates to the social structure, social process and the impact of social life. There is still room to compare and contrast the social structure theories that include social disorganization theory, strain theories and cultural deviance theory. The social disorganization theory was first referenced with the displacement among immigrants. Scholars believed this was due to the immigrants inability to transfer norms and values from their first homes in the old country to the new culture. In the social structure theory the strain principle is addressed. It deals with the pressure that individuals encounter when attempting to reach socially determined goals (Schmalleger, 2012). In the field of criminology the strain theory is associated with resulting to deviant behavior as a way to solve the frustrations of social environment. The term anomie was used by Robert Merton in the strain theory as the condition and single encounter when the means to achieve goals are limited to particular groups. However anomie was first introduced by Emile Durkheim in 1897. Durkheim associated the term anomie and normlessness or deregulation which progresses to deviant behavior, because of decreased proper control over actions. Rembrandt and The Western Art Rembrandt uses oil on wood in one of his earliest self portraits, depicting himself in a fabulous costume that includes a plumed hat, a silk scarf, and an elegant jacket complete with gold trim. There is a heavy use of shadow, concealing half of his face, with the left half being illuminated by a sole source of light located out of the frame. His face purposefully lacks an expression, as if to create an open ended illusion of confusion. Unlike most of his works, this painting is quite large, having dimensions of 35 by 29 square inches. Although Rembrandt had already begun to attract serious attention, he had not yet received any portrait commissions by 1629, so this piece may have been created to show off his artistic abilities. This self portrait currently resides in the Isabella Gardner Museum after it was purchased in 1896 from a private collector, Lieutenant Colonel Sawyer.8 Shortly after he painted his self portrait at age 23, Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam in 1631, where he first began officially working as a professional portraitist. By that time, he had begun to gain recognition and stardom for his world class portraits. Rembrandt was living in the house of Hendrick van Uylenburgh, a Dutch art dealer, who introduced Rembrandt to his cousin, Saskia van Uylenburgh, whom Rembrandt married in 1634. This relationship only further progressed his career, bringing him in contact with rich patrons awaiting to commission portraits of themselves and their families.9 As ... • 20. The Golden Age And The Golden Age I have found myself thinking back to the first grade when comparing my time in that period of my life to the golden age. In the first grade I relied on people more than ever for the basic necessities that I needed at that time. I was sent to Bancroft Elementary School and it is located in Andover, Massachusetts. At this point I was somewhat unknowingly guided through the first grade and it ended up sharing many similarities with the golden age. The golden age is when man did not have to worry about what is needed in the basic human life, this includes fighting, food, shelter, and justice. In this young grade I recall vividly of not having a worry for any necessities that play a key part in everyday life. When I was told to go to lunch I ended up eating the food given, but I was knowledgeable on how it got on my plate; moreover, there seemed to be peace and a lack of physical violence throughout the grade. This thought of having peace, food, little work, and having a roof over your head in the first grade shares many similarities with what man experienced in the golden age. In the first grade I did not understand the idea where justice and peace develops from; however, reflecting on this now I can understand how this is something that I would have found to be insignificant while being in the first grade. When I went to the first grade the safety protocols were not as commonly practiced as they are current day. I had felt a sense of safety even though I may not have been able ... • 21. The Material Flow And Variable Chances For Improvement Abstract: Among the challenges faced by manufacturers in mean time, Improvement in material efficiency and the impact of material on environment are given most priority. Presently, managements mainly focus on maximizing outputs in economic terms but not on the damage caused due to processing and disposal of material. Few methods can determine the product s impact on environment but no method can assess the material efficiency in production system. This Journal Material Flow Assessment in Manufacturing System shows the framework for effective material flow and variable chances for improvement. Introduction: Resource Efficient Manufacturing (REM) focuses on reducing production costs like labor, material, energy costs and to maximize profits, increasing output sales. Certain tools for REM such as lean manufacturing and process optimization seems to be inadequate to meet sustainability goals. Resources which has greater financial impact on business are mainly focused by managers and given higher priority. Availability of resources is linked with other sources, the degree of scarcity of certain source is specified to both region and season. Material Efficiency Strategies: The provision of product with less material production has clear environmental benefits as the decreased amount of material used in production will ultimately reduce the impact on environment. MES are grouped as design changes and process changes. Material elimination, minimization, reducing yield losses and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The United States Collective Identity A true basis of what it means to be an American can be thoroughly argued on the grounds of what constitutes an American, is an American born or is an American made? The collective identity of the American populace is the shared characteristics, the same drive, which ultimately results in oneness. The unique American cultural identity is the shared revolutionary nature, which drives Americans toward progressive social changes. The original thirteen colonies faced a rather odd situation in their nascent years. Far enough away from Britain to not completely live under their control, the colonies began to form a new way of defining themselves. Rather than simply being British colonies they wanted to act as a sovereign nation in their own right. Fearful of the colonies gaining too much power the British government implemented a set of Acts, such as the Intolerable Act and the Stamp Act, with the intention of them limiting the colonies freedoms and smothering any chance of rebellion. However, the colonist took this as an act of oppression instead and rose above it in order to regain their personal freedoms. They felt that their society had plateaued into mediocrity under the rule of King George as they didn t have protected rights (The American Pageant, 126 133). In the hopes of ridding themselves of the British rule war broke out, the crude colonist soldiers fighting against the well polished British army, something revolutionary all in itself as it has never been done ... • 26. Summary Of The Mirror By Virginia Woolf The way one person perceives the world is not always the way another perceives, just as a reflection shows a person but reflected backwards. The mirror does not create falsehood; it instead shows the views of every side. Every person is going to see something different when looking into the mirror depending on where they stand. When Virginia Woolf writes she tells the world of an idea everybody can relate to. She writes on women and men and shows how they related through the mirror. Sometimes to empower and others to educate those that don t have that view point or understand. She writes both the common and uncommon views and shows how they both stand together in one mirror. Two text which reflect two Ideas through the mirror to show the world are Professions for Women and Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid. Ladies are well represented in Virginia Woolf s stories such as Professions for Women and Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid. Both of these Texts reflect the standard for women at this time. In Professions for women Virginia Woolf tells of her story of being a women; showing her views of the world through reflection of her life. Virginia Woolf starts by creating powerful small ideas when she writes, it is true, I am a women; it is true I am employed, but what professional experiences have I had? Using her short chops of information she has simplified herself so that more people can see her in their mirror. This is great because it simplifies Woolf making her more common, ... • 27. A Summary Of Phaseolus Abstract The sclerenchyma ring in the stem of Phaseolus lunatus, commonly known as lima bean, was measured in relation to the wavelength of light they were grown in (650, 475 nm). It was hypothesized that wavelength of light affects plant growth. It was predicted that plants grown when exposed to red light (650 nm) would grow taller and therefore have thicker sclerenchyma cell rings . The results of the t test failed to support both the hypothesis and prediction (P = 0.444599). When compared to other studies, this experiment appears to have skewed data; therefore, although the hypothesis was rejected, there is still evidence supporting the concept of a full spectrum of light is essential for proper plant development. This suggest that the higher energy blue light might simply be received better by the plants in his study allowing for an increase in energy production allowing more growth. It is possible that our hypothesis was rejected due to human error, as when estimating the space the sclerenchyma tissue took up or even a mechanical over sight such as a low wattage bulbs simulating growth in low light conditions. That being said it was found that plants grown in low light conditions would have a smaller mass: length ratio than those grown in a full spectrum (Magda et al. 2006). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Qualitative and Quantitative Studies In patients sixty five years and older how does the use of an influenza vaccine contrasted to not obtaining the vaccine reduce their chance of acquiring pneumonia during the flu season? In 2005, pneumococcal disease and influenza were the eighth leading cause of death in the United States and the primary cause of infection related mortality for all age groups (Assaad, El Masri, Porhayman, El Sohl, 2012, p. 453). Vaccination for influenza is widely identifiable as one of the most efficient and cost effective public health interventions. (Wheelock, Thomson, Sevdalis, 2013, p. 893). Approximately 90% of deaths caused by these illnesses occur among adults sixty five years of age or older. It is hypothesized that the impairment to the airway epithelial lining triggered by influenza fosters bacterial growth, and that in turn bacterium derived proteases boost virus related virulence. There are several studies that have been established that show vaccinating the population of older patients, aged sixty five and older, has shown a decrease in developing pneumonia during flu season. In a sizable study that included Swedish patients aged ≥ than 65 years old showed that immunization with the flu vaccine resulted in a 29% decrease in the occurrence of all cause pneumonia and a 35% drop in the death rate from all cause pneumonia in the vaccine group.
