Despite the claim that everyone is beautiful, barely 20% of the models in New York, London, Paris,
and Milan for fashion week are people of color (Wilson, 2014). Eurocentric beauty standards have a
negative impact on countless people around the world who do not fit into these set values. These
standards are often times valued over non European features, and this impacts children at a younger
age than some may believe. It is not uncommon for people with lighter skin to be more valued than

Karl Marx, Adam Smith, and Andrew Carnegie The writings of Karl Marx, Adam Smith, and Andrew
Carnegie all made significant impacts in society not only in their time, but continuing to this day.
Marx shared is opinions on capitalism and his views of the progression of human society in his
writing, The Communist Manifesto which he wrote with Friedrich Engles and published in 1848.
Marx believed in the idea of a society with no capitalism and the abolition of the bourgeoisie. Adam
Smith wrote a book called The Wealth of Nations which was published in 1776. In his book he tells
the reader what helps to build the economy of a nation and essentially advocates for capitalism.
Andrew Carnegie was a self made multimillionaire who gained his wealth by investing in the
railroads. In 1889 he wrote an article titled The Gospel of Wealth in which he discusses the duty of the
upper class to distribute their surplus wealth to those in need. All three of these men were influential in
their works and ways of life, but all three had extremely different opinions on capitalism. Karl Marx s
viewed capitalism as something that was negative for our society, but that would eventually become a
positive. Because of capitalism, the bourgeoisie (upper and middle class) would often oppress the
proletarians (working class). In The Communist Manifesto he discusses how capitalism is part of the
transition to communism. Marx

During the war, many visions of America s postwar role began to emerge. One of the key roles that
began to emerge was the idea of equality for all. Americans established that Americanism rested on
toleration of diversity and equality for all, while the enemy s philosophy was racism. So, by the end of
the war the new immigrant groups had been fully accepted as loyal ethnic Americans, rather than
distinct and inferior races. Another idea of America s postwar role, was brought to light in 1944 when
the president called for an Economic Bill of Rights. Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed to expand the

Identifying Our Strengths As Individuals Can Be Refreshing
Identifying our strengths as individuals can be refreshing. We are often criticized for our failures
without receiving proper praise for our accomplishments. Personally, my strengths can be found in my
interpersonal skills, effective style of communication, and my ability to adapt and embrace current
surroundings. I am very social. I know, a shock to anyone who works with me on a regular basis. In all
seriousness, I genuinely enjoy people. I want to hear their stories and see where they have been on
their journey that has let them to the same place as me. This personal attribute translates well into the
work of student affairs. My hope is to build from that talent by learning how to listen more and talk
less. As a performer, my first instinct to share and to think that other professionals or students will be
willing to share on the same level. I recognize the impact of taking a step back, observing the
situation, understanding my present company, and truly engaging with them through listening. This
leads me to my next ability, effective style of communication. Whether it is through email, a phone
call, or in person, I am constantly attempting to stay positive and keep the conversation warm. It can
be a great way for students to know that I am someone they can come to about anything. However, it
