Andy Warhol s Telephone
To complete my project I decided to visit the museum of contemporary art. The piece I m going to
focus on is Andy Warhol s Telephone, which was painted in 1961. I had already chosen to do my essay
on this piece because I d been interested in Warhol and his overarching themes of consumerism and
product idolization in America. Although this piece isn t blatantly judging America and its
materialistic mentality, I like the commentary he was attempting to make about traditional and modern
forms of art. Upon first seeing this piece I was taken aback by its size. I d seen a photo of the work on
MOCA s website, but to see it in person truly was a different experience. When I began to really look
at it, I noticed how clean cut all the lines were and made the assumption that Warhol had used silk
screening as he did in many of his pieces. However, when I read the description on the side and found
out he hand painted it I was extremely surprised. There aren t any visible brush strokes, the lines are

Just by looking at it most would assume he used silk screening like I had assumed. This could stem
back to Warhol s constant attempts to make his audience believe that his work meant less than it really
did. He was hiding the meaning by making it look like his other pieces in that aspect. Just another
piece to be visually consumed by his audience. It wasn t meant to be analyzed, only enjoyed. This also
thought this could mean that even if a piece of art is hand drawn people don t appreciate that form of

We All Have Evil Inside Nathaniel Hawthorne is best known for his use of allegorical figures in his
short stories. The use of allegories help its readers seek a hidden meaning of an object or character to
help them understand their significance to the story. In 1835, Hawthorne wrote the short story of
Young Goodman Brown where the reader is introduced to an innocent and pure couple who are all
about religion and against any evil worshippers. Faith and Goodman Brown will face a diabolic
journey to hell, and fight against the will of the evil which is nearly impossible for everyone in town
has walked through sin. I am writing about Young Goodman Brown because I am trying to show you
how Hawthorne relies on the allegorical figures of Faith, the old man, and Goodman Brown to explain
that everyone has evil within their own nature.
Faith plays an important role that functions as an allegorical figure throughout Goodman Brown s
diabolic journey. For example, at the beginning of the story, young Goodman Brown comes late to his
meeting with the old man. As a result, he excused himself by stating Faith kept me back (Hawthorne
pg. 387). Besides Faith being his wife s name, it is an allegory for religious faith. It is emphasized at
