Paraphrase Essay
Crafting an essay on the subject of "Paraphrase Essay" can be a challenging endeavor. The irony
lies in the task itself, as the very essence of paraphrasing involves rewording and restructuring
existing content while retaining the original meaning. It requires a delicate balance between
preserving the core ideas and presenting them in a new, unique manner.
One of the key challenges is avoiding plagiarism, as paraphrasing should not simply involve
replacing words with synonyms. It demands a deep understanding of the source material,
allowing the writer to rephrase ideas without distorting their intended message. Striking this
balance requires not only linguistic prowess but also a keen analytical mind to grasp the nuances
of the content.
Moreover, the challenge intensifies when one considers the need to maintain coherence and flow
within the essay. Paraphrasing individual sentences may be manageable, but ensuring a seamless
transition between paragraphs and sections while maintaining the overall coherence can be a
daunting task.
Furthermore, the writer must possess excellent time management skills. Paraphrasing demands a
substantial amount of time, and underestimating the effort required can lead to rushed and
subpar results. Diligence and patience become essential virtues in this process.
In conclusion, the task of writing an essay on the topic of "Paraphrase Essay" is no small feat. It
necessitates linguistic finesse, a deep understanding of the source material, and a commitment to
maintaining original meaning while presenting it in a fresh light. Success in this endeavor
requires a meticulous approach, attention to detail, and a respect for the intricacies of language.

Compare And Contrast Ancient Greek And Roman Culture
The Romans and Ancient Greeks have impacted culture in a dominant way. Their
models have exerted an evolution that endured through the years. They inspired
development in the areas political, economic and military forces. Their lasting
empires have provided an influence on civilization that is still seen today. Societies
under both empires had a lot alike and differences. Both Empires were alike in that
both started out with them being city states. Also, their religious beliefs were quite
the same. They did not believe in One God with all the control and authority. They
felt that they were quite a few gods and goddesses. The names of the gods and
goddesses did differ due to their different languages (Jenkins, P, 2009). They both

The Greeks were along the Mediterranean coast. Although the Empire was short and
not huge like The Romans their influence was distinguishable. They influenced those
surrounding them including the Romans through their ways of commerce, social
behavior, and colonizing ways along the coast and other nearby seaside Regions. In
contrast, the Romans build a vast centralized state. Their Empire consisted of most of
Northern Africa and Europe. A close knit management and the way their trade was
organized and processed inspired the development of the way people accomplished
ideas, moved goods, and people traveled. Their methods would down the road
influence their neighbors in Europe, Southwest Asia, and Mediterranean cultures.
Greek nation altered from lords to totalitarian, supremacist, warrior society in
Sparta and the immediate popular government of Athens, while the Roman Empire
rulers offered route to an agent, choosing republic until it was dislodged by the
energy of Emperor rulers. For example, Athenian people could vote, yet the ladies
were not natives, while in the Roman Empire they were legal. Greece was the focal
point of Greece s Golden Age around 400 BCE, while the Roman Empire came in
the earliest century of the Republic and in the first century or two of the Romans

Most of the users are adopting Uber services just because of the high degree of

the sense of safety. They should be informed about the application easiness, price

customers will start using Uber services as their means of transportation. Especially
women who are divorced or widow will be having a feeling of insecurity should feel

The gold rush started because Edward Hargraves returned to Australia after
prospecting gold in California he noticed that some parts of Australia were similar
and convinced gold could be found. He was proved right a year later he discovered
gold in New South Walesin April 1851 he spread the news to local colonies and
overseas but it took many months for people overseas to find out. For the first year,
the diggings were worked by locals from Australian colonies. Soon after word spread
to England in January 1852 a new rush of migration followed as Britons from all
classes decided to try their luck the discovery of gold in Victoria also added to the
hysteria. Husbands left their families, ships were left stranded in port when crews

Monopolies, Oligopolies and the Economy
Monopolies, Oligopolies and the Economy
Monopoly is a term to describe an industry where a seller of a product or service does
not have a competitor offering a close substitute. The word is derived from the
Greek words monos (meaning one) and polein (meaning to sell). Rarely does a pure
monopoly exist. In a pure monopoly there is only one company making and selling
the item in question; however there can also be the situation where there is one
company who has the bulk of sales and the other firms in the same market have little
or no impact on the overriding company. Due to lack of competitors, the monopoly
company has control of the supply and price of the good or service, unless there is
government intervention. The monopoly will ... Show more content on

In order for the monopoly to remain, there has to be some sort of barrier to entry for
new companies to enter the industry. Examples of barriers to entry would include
high start up costs, limited resources, patents or legal barriers. A company can
become a monopoly in different ways. In the case of Viagra, although the patent and
monopoly were later lost, the company earned its monopoly position by offering the
only product approved and patented for erectile dysfunction. In the case of the USPS
the government outlawed any competition for them creating a monopoly.
While a monopoly usually involves one firm with significant control on the market,
an oligopoly contains a few firms. An oligopoly is a market structure where a few
companies selling identical or differentiated products control the marketplace. The
few players in an industry are usually quite large compared to the market for the
product, thus giving these few players an advantage at market control. There are
barriers to entry in oligopolies that include patents or government grants, ownership
of resources, cost prohibitive barriers, brand equity and diminishing average cost. The
leaders of companies within oligopolistic industries monitor decisions made by other
players in the industry; this is called interdependency. The major companies within an
oligopoly tend to compete through product differentiation or advertising
Archimedes Accomplishments
The year is 287 B.C.E, Alexander the Great Has been dead for fifty years and the
kingdom he left to his generals has begun to fracture. Around 300 B.C.E the Punic
Wars began, throwing Greece into disarray. The Hellenistic Age is coming to a
close. However, at least one good thing came of this year. One of the greatest
engineers in history is born. His name is Archimedesand he will change the world.
Archimedes life, achievements, and effect on the modern world of engineering make
him one of the most prominent and important figures in the ancient world.
Unfortunately little is known about the life of Archimedes. In 287 B.C.E he was
born in Syracuse. His father was an astronomer named Pheidias and as a man he

The Law of the Lever is one of Archimedes more prestigious discoveries. When he
made his discovery the fulcrum was already in use. However Archimedes was the
first to discover that a longer lever made lifting easier. Storys say that Archimedes
once said, Give me a lever and a place to stand, and I will move the world. Another
extremely important innovation by Archimedes was the pulley. He created a
complex system of pulleys that allowed him to lift almost anything. Another story
says that a team of men, after great effort dragged a trireme onto the beach. The
men all boarded the ship along with their animals and Archimedes was able to lift
the ship and move it easily by himself. The Archimedes Screw was another
impressive invention by Archimedes. The screw is massive and capable of lifting
water from the ground. It is still used today in some third world countries.Other
inventions by Archimedes included, the concept of buoyancy. He proved that, when
building boats, the material does not matter so much as how spread out it is.
Archimedes was also the first person to accurately estimate the value of pi. These are
only a few of Archimedes most prestigious achievements. As previously stated, many
of the works of Archimedes have been lost, however imagine what other incredible
feats of engineering this man may have

The genesis of Edward Scissorhands came from a drawing by then teenaged director
Tim Burton, which reflected his feelings of isolation and being unable to
communicate to people around him in suburban Santa Clarita Valley, California.
Burton stated that he was often alone and had trouble retaining friendships. I get the
feeling people just got this urge to want to leave me alone for some reason, I don t
know exactly why . During pre production of Beetlejuice, Burton hired Caroline
Thompson, then a young novelist, to write the Edward Scissorhands screenplay as a
spec script. Burton was impressed with her short novel, First Born, which was about
an abortion that came back to life . Burton felt First Born had the same psychological
elements he wanted to showcase in Edward Scissorhands.
Shortly after Thompson s hiring, Burton
Hellenistic Culture Essay
Hellenistic Culture The time between the death of Alexander the Great and the rise of
Roman civilization is defined as the Hellenistic period. After the great expansion of
Greece, the empire was split into smaller kingdoms. Many battles were fought before
establishing the kingdoms. However, they lasted fairly long until they were
conquered by the Romans. Hellenistic culture emphasized the importance of the
individual. This brought on the growth of art, literature, and philosophers. Along with
this, libraries were also formed. Greece began to have a more centralized power.
Rather than having segregated, democratic city states or Alexander s empire, they
developed different types of kingdoms. Agriculture also experienced major

consequences. In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, allusions to John Milton s Paradise
Lost and his depiction of creation are evident, through the characters of Victor
Frankenstein and his Creature, as they resemble, yet sharply contrast Adam, Eve,
God, and Satan. The complexity of the character s connections, exemplifies how each

Adam and the creature were both the first of their kind to exist but what follows
them after is extraordinarily different. Adam is accepted by God, given a mate to
reproduce with, while also put in charge of all other species roaming the earth. The
monster on the other hand is rejected by not only his creator, but also by all who
see him due to his physical unattractiveness. He must learn about the beauty and
perils of the world around him by trial and error, without someone to guide him and
inform him of his purpose. He is attacked and beaten, overcome by pain and
anguish (Shelley 97), while also stripped of all hope he had of mankind seeing him
for his interior self. Eve has a stunningly opposite experience related to outward
appearance. She is obsessed with her reflection, pined with vain desire (Milton 466),
contrasting that of the Creature. This amplifies his feelings of rejection, knowing
others possess the physical appearance he wishes to have. Adam and Eve can both be
seen within the creature, primarily in ways which they are unabridged opposites. The
isolation he is thrusted into without the caring creator they were provided, prompts

fairchild water technologies
Fairchild Water Technologies, Inc. I. INTRODUCTION Fairchild Water
Technologies was founded in 1980 by Eugene Fairchild. The company s first
product was a desalinator used by mobile home parks in Florida to remove salt from
well water supplied to residents. As the desalinator became a huge success, the
company expanded into the coastal region s adjacent to the company s headquarters
in Tampa, Florida, and then to desert areas in the southwestern United States. By
2002, they had expanded their product lines to include desalinators, particle filters,
ozonators, ion exchange resins, and purifiers. Their products were generally priced

Also, the company established an approach to manufacture in India, where labor is
much cheaper when compared to the United States. However, the company would
import few components that are critical for operations. Finally, it was recommended
that Fairchild should seek an Indian partner that is big enough to have a distribution
and manufacturing infrastructure, but not too large where it commands the direction
of the product line. III. SITUATION ANALYSIS TASKS A. Buyer Behavior Many
Indians emphasize the need for and improved water quality. Newspapers, consumer
advocates, government officials, and the general public are aware of the poor quality
of Indian water. The majority of Indians have no choice but to consumer the water
that is accessible to them. But, better educated, wealthier, and health conscious
Indians took some measures to improve the quality of water that is consumed by their
families. It is estimated the number of such households is around 40 million. Health
conscious households are similar to middle and upper middle class households in the
U.S. and Europe. They cherish convenience and product variety, and consider
consumption of material goods as a means to higher quality of life. Moreover,
Chatterjee s research suggests that product performance was important consumers.

The War Of The Colonial Expansion
Friedrich Fabri is in favor of the colonial expansion because he believes it will be
quite beneficial for their economy and national development. His view on the
motives for the imperialism is that it will be economic and political. Fabri states in
his article, Many things in the new nation are already made bitter through
unproductive political quarreling, soured and poisoned, so that the notification of
a new promising course of national development will produce a liberating effect,
as the national spirit is stimulated in many ways. This would be delightful as well
as a profit. How I perceive this is that because of the debates between Europe and
the other countries, the other countries became a mess and the ideas of Europe
helping them on their feet was promising. This seems to be a trick as to get the
countries to let Europe help them, but clearly it worked out for the better
anyways. Fabri also mentions how England surpasses all other countries and how
strong they are with their military. John G. Paton is in favor of this expansion and
has written a letter to James Service to urge them to possess the New Hebrides. In
this letter he states many reasons as to why they should take control of these
islands. A few of these reasons are that they have already taken possession of Fiji
and by possessing the rest would complete the chain of islands, they long for British
protection and are afraid of the French, almost all the Europeans on the New

Tuna that go by the scientific name of Thunnus Maccoyii (Dennis. M et.al, 2010) are
one of the most valuable finfish cultured within Australian and most sought after for
sushi within Japan. The waters generally out from Port Lincoln within Spencer Gulf,
South Australia are where the tuna are mainly cultured in Australia due to the water
temperature being ideal for the culture of these highly valued finfish. Tunais within
the top four of the most valuable cultured aquatic species in Australia especially
Southern Bluefin Tuna (SBT) which are valued at four hundred dollars per fish
making the transport and capture of these fish very important where damage is
avoided at all costs. The transport of the captured fish from the wild in nets back
into shallower water where they can then participate in the ranching stage can lead
to serious problems and can bring upon mortalities if done incorrectly. Ranching is
the process of temporally holding wild fish at sea to fatten them on baitfish.
(Kirchoff. N et. al 2011 pg1) This process of transportation from the wild back into
the grow out pontoons or cages for ranching can lead to effects on a fish s health,
performance and or even disease and parasite infection.

Disadvantages Of Distilled Drinks
Spirits or distilled beverages are types of alcoholic drinks which are produced by
distillation of a mixture produced from alcoholic fermentation. Spirits are often called
hard liquor or simply liquor . The distillation process of spirits excludes the diluting
water component results in increasing the alcohol content in the drinks. Unlike, beer
and wine, distilled spirits contain no added sugar and their ABV content is ~20%.
Distilled spirits are the types of alcoholic beverages where the concentration of ethyl
alcohol has been increased over and above that of the original fermented mixture.
This is because yeast (the main component in fermentation) will not be able to
survive higher alcohol levels and in order to create stronger spirits,... Show more

It is a spirit produced by distilling wine, and is generally taken as an after dinner
drink, or to warm the body during cold temperatures. Some of its varieties are
allowed to age in wooden casks, or some are colored with caramel coloring to
replicate the effect of aging, while others are produced as an outcome of these two
processes. ABV ranges between 35% and 60%.
Cognac is a variety of brandy which is made from the most expensive fruit plucked
from Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne and Borderies, in France. The spirit is
allowed to age in oak barrels. ABV ranges between 40% and 45%.
Liqueurs are distilled alcoholic drinks which derives their flavor from fruits, cream,
herbs, spices, flowers or nuts, and bottled with added sugar or other sweetener
which may include high fructose corn syrup. Unlike brandy, liqueurs are not
allowed to age for longer periods, but are allowed to rest for the ingredients to blend
in. ABV ranges between 15% and 55%.
Whiskey is merely beer which has been distilled. It is a distilled alcoholic beverage
which is obtained from the fermented mash of grain, distilled at lower than 190
proof, and then allowed to age in oak containers. It ranges from Bourbon to rye to
Canadian to Irish to Scotch, and others. ABV is quite high, ranging from
Rhetorical Analysis Thoreau
Questions on Rhetoric and Style:
1. Describe the tone Thoreau establishes in paragraph 2. How does it contribute to
the rhetorical effect of the paragraph? In paragraph two, Thoreau uses a depressing,
problematic and facetious tone to get his message across. Thoreau explains how he is
strongly against the United States government, and also points out problems of the
government. Thoreau uses depressing diction when describing the problems of the
government in order to make people feel hatred toward the government and realize
how problematic it actually is. Thoreau uses Power of Three to exemplify the
problems of the government, and further connects with the audience on an emotional
level by pointing out how the citizens help lead to the countries problematic state.
Thoreau s use of inappropriate humor when he explains trade makes the United
States government seem trivial and almost as a lost cause due to the problems
caused by the leaders. His relation of such a serious topic to a comical reference
makes it an easier to understand situation. The use of this specific tone creates a more
impactful rhetorical effect that is relayed in the paragraph.
3. Thoreau develops many analogies to support his arguments (e.g., in paras. 8 and
9). Select three, and explain whether you find them convincing. How effectively does
each one support the claim Thoreau is using it to support? Thoreau s use of analogies
to support his arguments are very beneficial in getting his point
Watson and Rayner s Unconditional Stimulus Experiment
on...
Watson and Rayner set out to substantiate his theory by recruiting a subject, who
basically stayed in a hospital attached John Hopkins University, and the conducting
an experiment on the chosen infant. Their aim was to classically condition the
infant to fear a white laboratory rat. The infant, Albert B. or Little Albert , was a
physically healthy and emotionally stable 9 month old boy (Watson Rayner,
1920, p. 1). He was described as a very relaxed baby who hardly ever cried. In the
emotional tests, before conditioning, Albert was exposed to a series of objects,
which included fire, cotton wool, a monkey, a dog, a white rabbit, a mask with hair,
and a white laboratory rat. He had not shown a scared or nervous response toward
these neutral stimuli, and particularly adored the white laboratory rat. (chaopret 7, p.
239).
Firstly, the researchers attempted to identify an unconditioned stimulus. They carried
this out by making a loud noise, hitting a hammer against a steel bar, and observing
whether the infant responds in fear (learning+c, p.74). In this case, Albert started to
cry, which suggested that he was afraid. This gave them the method of testing several
important aspects of the experiment.
The actual practise of conditioning only started when Albert was 11 months old. The
first step Watson and Raymer took towards conditioning Little Albert, was paring the
loud noise, unconditioned stimulus, with the white rat, conditioned stimulus. The
responses were fear of the
The Harmful Effects Of Methamphetamine
When I started researching this assignment I found many drugs (legal and illegal) that
may be commonly used, misused, or abused by my future students. I became
overwhelmed; however, I started remembering about an article that I read in my local
newspaper. This article discussed how methamphetamine has become a prevalent
issue in many small communities. I also found a statistic that blew my mind and
made me want to research this drug because of the effects it may have on my
potential students life and learning. According to the United States government,
reported in 2008, approximately 13 million people over the age of 12 have used
methamphetamine(Foundation for a Drug Free World, n.d.). That is a lot of young
lives being touched by one... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Students who are subjected to this environment can have issues as a direct result of
this drug and also additional issues resulting from family members who are suffering
from addiction. Babies from mothers who use methamphetamine during the time of
pregnancy has a higher rate for premature birth and/or full term babies that exhibit
behaviors/symptoms of a premature baby (i.e. trouble swallowing, etc.) and have a
higher rate of mental disabilities (Norquist Spalding, 2012). Children are often
subjected to many health problems due to exposure to harmful, dangerous chemicals
used to make methamphetamine and/or to the actual drug from the toxic residue that
remains during the cooking process (Norquist Spalding, 2012). According to Norquist
and Spalding (2012), many children suffer abuse, neglected of basic necessities (i.e.
food, sleep, etc.), treated with aggressive actions, suffer emotional and behavioral
issues, etc. (Norquist Spalding, 2012). Many of these children struggle in school
because they are not coming prepared to learn and do not have the proper support
outside of the classroom. Many of them are lacking sleep and food. These are huge
distractions that hinder children learning because the results are often a lack of
concentration and/or focus. Children from methamphetamine homes often come to
school showing signs of physical aggression. According to Haight, Black, and
Sheridan (2010), these students tend to display externalizing behavior disorders.
(Haight, Black, Sheridan, 2010). These at risk students tend to deal with problems
using punching, kicking, chocking, pulling hair, bullying, not following rules
/routines, impulsive tendencies, lying, cheating, fighting their own substance abuse,
etc. All of these issues can affect students learning and learning of those students in
the classroom
Supply Chain Management as an Inventory Control Method
Supply Chain Management as an Inventory Control Method:
Supply chain management can be described as a means with which companies across
the globe are identifying powerful new sources of competitive advantage. This
process incorporates all integrated activities that bring products to the market and
generate customer satisfaction. Some of the major aspects in supply chain
management include purchasing, manufacturing operations, transportation, and
distribution in a unified process. Therefore, successful supply chain management
processes involves coordinating and integrating all these operations and functions in
a flawless process. As part of ensuring effective supply chain management, companies
usually incorporate and link various partners in the chain or process. The major
partners in the chain include third party firms, vendors, information system providers,
and carriers. Supply chain management is defined as all activities and processes
associated with the movement of goods from raw materials to the end user product
(Zigiaris, 2000).
Description of Supply Chain Management:
As previously stated, supply chain includes every activity linked to the movement of
goods from the raw materials phase to the end user stage. The proponents of this
business process recognized that vital productivity improves from management of
material flow, relationships, and information. Actually, the success and productivity
of a business is dependent on the delivery of improved customer and
Babylonian Captivity
It is no surprise that Christians unschooled in the history of the development of the
Christianity s Bible based beliefs and teachings, and with the beliefs of the Early
Church Fathers (such as are found in Pelikan s excellent four volume work), do not
grasp the Faith once delivered to the saints, but insist upon non biblical documents
that are not at all points in agreement with the information written under divine
inspiration as found in the books of the Holy Bible.

returnees to Palestine could not speak Hebrew. They spoke Aramaic, the language of

Social Pressure During The Victorian Era
The Victorian era has an influential impact on individuals as they overcame many of
society s beliefs during this period. In Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and Wuthering
Heights by Emily Bronte, societal pressure during the Victorian era led to a discovery
of the human condition. This is demonstrated through: love, gender roles, and social
class.
The human condition demonstrates love as a powerful emotion which society
cannot condemn. During the Victorian era, society believed love is unacceptable
between a master and a governess. However, despite society s belief, Edward
confesses his passionate love for Jane as he overlooks societal pressure on their
relationship. Edward proves his eternal love for Jane, Every atom of your flesh is
as dear to me as my own: in pain and sickness it would still be dear (Bronte 325).
Additionally, he declares that he will support Jane through tragic events as he
overcomes society s beliefs and discovers love. Consequently, the irony is
demonstrated when Edward becomes blind due to a fire and Jane supports him
through this event. Similarly, Jane loves Edward passionately even as she
separates from him due to unfortunate events. As Jane realizes Edward is married,
she decides to leave him and disregard her love; however, she is unable to forget
him. As a result, Jane says, Perhaps you think I had forgotten Mr. Rochester, reader,
amidst these changes of place and fortune. His idea was still with me, because it was
not a vapour sunshine could

St. Philomena was born on January 10th, 291 in Greece. St. Philomena s name in

Gregory XVI. St. Philomena is known as The Wonder Worker because she has
listened to prayers and requests. St. Philomena can help me in my day to day life
by being an inspiration for me. She is a role model because she was abused and

even though she was tortured. I can grow in faith with the help of St. Philomena
and God by following their footsteps. I can follow their footsteps to be holy and
faithful. In addition, I can be like the both of them by resisting complaints, because
they did not complain about what they were facing throughout their struggles. I can
be loyal to my family, friends, and God just like St. Philomena was to God.
I chose St. Philomena because I relate to her since she is around my age. I also
chose her because when I was around eight years old my mom took me to a gift
shop at Our Lady Of Peace that had figurines, prayer books, bibles, rosaries,
crucifixes, and other gifts supplies. When we were there, I saw the statue of St.
Philomena and I thought she was gorgeous.
Ken Carter Essay
A good coaching style and personality are the foundation behind a successful coach.
In the movie Coach Carter do Ken Carter accept a new challenge, to become the new
head coach for an awful basketball team, that s having tremendous problems with
dreadful results, criminality and bullying. Carter changes the team, their structure and
the player s way of being, which ends up making them a successful team. But what is
the secret about his great success? And which coachingstrategies do he use to make
the team successful?
Just from the start Ken Carter showed how great his personality really is. Right when
he stepped into the basketball arena, he was faced with resistance from the players.
Especially after he introduced the new basketball contract. The special thing about his
personality is, that he was able to overcome these challenges and that he kept fighting
for a better future for the rest of the team.
Ken Carter treats everyone the same. When his son joined the team and was late for
training, he got the same punishment as the rest of the team. Moreover, he s not
creating a big power distance between him and the team. His showing his position as
the guy with the power over the team when it s necessary, but his keeping that to a

them by making them work hard for their goals, which will motivate them to work
even harder for their basketball dreams. He s setting clear expectations and making
them stand up for what they believe in, which is a huge motivational

As the same letter was received last year, I will attempt to clarify our management
decisions and stance on the issue.
The board of directors holds a very critical management function within or
organization with the following criteria essential for membership:
Experience as a CEO of an influential technology based company
Direct expertise in the semiconductor industry based on education and management
experience
Direct experience in management of a company that buys from the semiconductor
industry
You are correct in proclaiming that women and minorities are continuing to move
into upper level management positions in the business world; however this
diversification is still in a growth stage. Currently the pool of candidates for our
board of directors tends to very heavily represent the demographics currently
holding positions on the board. As the previously described diversification of the
workforce reaches levels consistent with the required knowledge, experience,
which it will in the near future, a broader range of candidates will be available;
naturally resulting in many organizations being then able to form a board of
directors representative of the diversified potential members. At this time, as it will
be in the future, our board of directors is selected with great care and concern with
a primary focus on ability to bolster profits. This is a duty for which we are
responsible to our shareholders.
Analysis Of If This Is A Man By Primo Levi
When in the extreme situations such as those created by the two World Wars,
humans are often pushed to the brink of both mental and physical. Survival in
Auschwitz , subtitled and originally titled If This Is A Man , is a novel written by
Holocaust survivor Primo Levi detailing the measures he took to survive ten
months in Auschwitz. Published in 1959, it was written shortly after World War II
and serves as a primary source to its events. Contained in those pages are
discussions of the human mental condition when stripped of the conditions and
items that create a person s identity and dignity. Upon entry to the concentration
camp, all personal effects were taken away including clothing and shoes. The
prisoners were given the camp uniform and shoes with wooden soles. While the
first World War asked its soldiers to abandon their personal identity to devote
themselves to the cause of their country, Auschwitz demanded that its prisoners
give up their personal identity in favor of becoming a cog in the machine of the
concentration camp. Within Survival in Auschwitz , the concept of what makes a
man is questioned and picked apart by Primo Levi. When writing this book, Primo
Levi had returned to Italy as a survivor of the Holocaust after being liberated by the
Russian Red Army in January 1945. He was lucky to still be in the camp, while
many of the other prisoners in Auschwitz were forced on a death march when the
Russians neared the camp. Levi had fallen ill with scarlet

When it comes to maintaining the data centers, there are important factors to be
considered. Size of data center play a vital role as the computers and servers are to be
increased and maintained when the data of an organizations increase day to day. In
other terms scalability factor need to be considered. Maintaining suitable
environment is another key factor in data center. Proper cooling and heating
temperatures are to be maintained at different zones within the data centers and
suitable exhaust systems are to be build. Power supply is another area to be focused.
As data centers need to be alive for all the time, energy resources are to be supplied
without any failures and fluctuations. All these factors deals with large investments
and maintenance charges. But several cost cutting approaches and methods are being
followed to reduce the cost in hosting and maintaining data centers. As an example of
that energy saving LED building practices in data centers is followed by many
organizations.
Maintaining security in Data center is another area that need to be worked at. As data
should not be accessed by any third party agent/system, imposing security becomes
very important. Only authorized persons are to be given access to enter and monitor
the systems and processes in data centers. The authorization is achieved by providing

Theseus s Contributions In The Death Of The Minotaur

black figure style of painting was replaced by the red figure around 530 BCE. The
figures were outlined with black glaze followed by the black background, which
reserved the red clay for the figures. The main scene on the vase depicts the death of
Minotaurat the hands of Theseus with the help of Princess Ariadneand Nike. Theseus
kills the Minotaur who lives in a Labyrinthin order to put an end to the Minotaur s
cannibalistic hunger. Theseus, a strong Athenian hero, is seen holding the sword to

Isolation in Detective Fiction Essay
In detective fiction, authors create chaos, which they balance with a sense of
structure and reason. They implement many elements to entice the reader to continue
with the detective on his quest to solve the riddle and defeat the chaos, which can be
divided into two sections: noticeable chaos and silent chaos. Noticeable chaos
includes elements such as murder and thievery, obvious aspects of detective fiction
that make the reader cringe. Silent chaos, on the other hand, includes locked rooms
and settings; things that make the reader shiver because they have no idea why it is
affecting them so much. Authors use these different elements to support common
themes that are woven into many different works of detective fiction. Sir Arthur

It is also the location of the death of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which is extremely
frightening because no one knows what happened in the laboratory, and everyone
fears the unknown. The locked room also appears in The Problem of Cell 13 by
Jacques Futrelle; however, the use of the locked room in this short story instills the
fear of being imprisoned in the audience, rather than the fear of the unknown. The
locked cell is filled with vile creatures and lacks any type of comfort, causing the
reader to cringe at the idea of the character being in such a place. In The Adventure
of the Speckled Band by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the locked room is the location of
a murder as well as the house of the murder weapon. Doyle has the character of the
stepfather, Dr. Roylott, lock the snake in a metal safe, which depicts that
dangerous things are kept in locked places. Locked rooms in detective fiction have
a negative connotation, which the reader can relate to being locked out of
communication with society. Authors also create silent chaos in the stories by
depicting the regression, or reverse evolution, of mankind. Evolution, as an idea
becoming popular in the incipient stages of the detective fiction genre, was a
commonly used idea by writers as a way of evoking the fear of a more instinctual
side of human beings in the society. Reverse evolution connects with silent chaos
because it does not happen right away, it is a slow process which society would not

Difference Between Product Revenue And Variable Cost
Introduction
Background
Contribution margin is one of the vital tools utilized throughout the Capsim
simulation and business operations in general. Bushong and Talbolt (2001)
summarizes the contribution margin ratio as the difference between product revenue
and variable cost, over variable cost. Recommendations under the Capsim simulation
advised that groups maintained a contribution margin no less than 30% as this will aid
in long term business profitability and sustainability (Capsim, 2014). Through the
successful understanding and implementation of the contribution margin analysis,
business leaders can effectively make decisions regarding price, labor and sales, both
pre and post product distribution, that can heavily impact short term and long term
profit (Spaller, 2006).
Problem Statement Business leaders, and in particular those from the Capsim
simulation, who strategize to achieve optimal contribution margin will ultimately
have greater profitability and sustainability. The difficulty in accomplishing this
vision is that costs for both human and product resources will continue to increase as
customer expectations on product and price continue to fluctuate, all of which impact
contribution margin (PR Newswire, 2006). However, if ongoing analysis and
response to costs and customer fluctuations are adhered, increased contribution
margins will have a positive impact on:
1.Increased profitability,
2.Sustained revenue, and
3.Encouragement for efficient

how it defeats the human capacity for things such as love and hope. Bao Ninh offers
this realistic picture of the Vietnam War s impact on the individual Vietnamese
soldier through use of a series of reminiscences or flashbacks, jumping backwards

persistent echo of the past is the whisper of ordinary life, even though the sounds
of ordinary life have been washed away by the long storms of war. It is the
whispers of friends and ordinary people that are the most horrifying. (63) The
strongest emotions occur as the story unfolds and life takes over from childhood
fantasies, destroying individuals and their families as a whole society is remade

The Social Welfare Policy And Social Programs Essay
Abstract In this paper we look at the different aspects of the Social Welfare
program, TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families). TANF is the final
variation today of the many cash assistance programs that are available to children
and families. In this paper we also focus on who is eligible for TANF and where
the funds are going to. With a review of the literature it is shown that living off cash
assistance is not easy and how it affects the participant s life. There is also a look at
unintended consequences and why this program did not work well in practice with
suggestions for improvement.
Introduction Many Social Welfare policies and programs that go into effect seem
like a great idea, and have many good intentions until they go into practice. While
Temporary Assistance to Needy Families tries its best to lift those out of poverty, it
often does not. It is the final variation of temporary cash assistance programs that
exist today.
Literature Review In the book, Social Welfare Policy and Social Programs by
Elizabeth A. Segal, the author gives an introduction and brief history to Temporary
Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). TANF was derived from many past public
assistance programs and was created from the Elizabethan Poor Laws (Segal, 2016
p.194).The first public assistance program was the first federal effort in 1920 to
help women and children in poverty with the Mothers Aid Law(Segal, 2016 p.195).
In this book we also learn how TANF recipients are

businesses and everyday life. A monthly cash budget helps businesses estimate their
incoming monthly income, and how much their monthly expenses will be. The
preparation of a monthly cash budget allows companies to be better prepared when it
comes to their business cash flow and taxes. If a company is in the market to borrow
money or obtaining financing, the bank requires pro forma financial statements,
specifically the balance sheet (Conrad, n.d.). The creation of a monthly cash budget
aids in the preparation of important pro forma documents, making a monthly cash
budget important to running a successful business. A monthly cash budget allows
firms to visually understand their income and expenses, which in turn provides extra
focus and attention to detail (Conrad,
Comparing Wordsworth and Keats’ Romantic Poetry.
Essay
Comparing Wordsworth and Keats Romantic Poetry. Both Wordsworth and Keats
are romantic Poets, they express ideas on nature and send us the message to
respect it. They say we have to admire the beauty of nature in different ways.
Wordsworh uses simpler language in his poems wether to express simple or
complex ideas, by which we understand he aimed his poems to lower classes. Keats
instead, uses much more complex language to describe and express his ideas, so we
know he aimed his poems to the educated. During the romnatic period, poets would
mainly send out the message to admire nature and see the beauty in it. We should fine
joy in nature and nature should be our teacher. In the poem composed upon

He also uses exaggeration to create a greater impact on the reader here as this is the
first line of the poem. Keats and Wordworth personify in different ways from each
other in the two sonnets. While Wordsworth is more positive and sees beauty in
everything, Keats is more balanced ; as a result of this he makes the sea come
alive with a more evil and angry character. Alternating moments in which the sea is
calm and relaxed, and moments in which it seems evil and angry. Keats also makes
us think that the moon has power on the sea as its the moon which makes the sea
move; personification makes it seeem magical and powerful. Keats also mentions
Hecete who is an evil character that witches used to pray to. Here we see his poems
were difinitely aimed to a higher educated class, because a poor and uneducated
person couldn t ve understood references to sea nymphs or Hecete. In Daffodils
Wordsworth gives a romantic and sentimental tone all the way though. It is a
happy poem and it gives out a positive message; to celebrate nature. Its tone is also
personal and informal, which we know because Wordsworth uses often the word I
as it to mean me talking to you . Comparing daffodils to To Autumn we see that in
the second one Keats uses descriptive language and detail, and it s all positive to
emphasise the same message as Wordsworth; to
The Difficult Transition from Duvalierism to Democracy in...
The Difficult Transition from Duvalierism to Democracy in Haiti
Haiti has historically been the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, suffering
from mismanagement of resources and corrupt rule by the elites. The rule of the
Duvaliers had concentrated the wealth of the state in the Duvalier family and its
political allies, the Duvalierists. This had been the way Haiti was always run since its
independence in 1804: the wealthy, French speaking elite ruling as an oligarchy or
dictatorship over the poor, Creole speaking masses. The events that occurred from
1986 to 1995 sought to change Haitian society forever in a transition from predatory
dictatorship to popular democracy. However, that path would not be smooth, as the...

In 1964, he completed the transition to a personalist dictatorship by declaring
himself president ad vitem aeternam by popular decree. (Rotberg 107) As his grip
on power increased, the exodus of the former elite and educated Haitians increased,
leaving Haiti with less skilled workers and an elite that was increasingly black and
increasingly loyal to Duvalier. However, he also held onto support from the mulatto
bourgeoisie by allowing them to maintain control of the economic sector. Thus, he
was able to maintain control over the masses through the control of the two elites and
the tontons macoutes a coalition that was called the Duvalierists. (Fatton 56)
Just before Duvalier died in 1971, he named his son, Jean Claude, also known as
Baby Doc, as his successor. Having grown up in the prestige of Papa Doc, Baby
Doc abandoned his relationship with the black bourgeoisie formally upon his
marriage to a mulatto, Michele Bennett, whose father grew rich from her relationship
with Baby Doc and used the country s money to enrich herself materially. (Gold 221)
Taking advantage of increased relative liberalization resulting from a shift to an
export oriented economy, opponents of the regime started to express their displeasure
at its authoritarian nature through such media as the Church s Radio Soleil and the
newspaper Le Petit Samedi Soir. This was sustained through the Carter

Just Say No! A Profile Of Cocaine and It s Effects On Two Lives
Greek mythology tells of a young god, Morpheus, god of dreams. Morpheus
planted a special purple flower called the lotus. Soon the people of the land
smelled the sweet flowers and ate them. They immediately feel into a deep and
troubled sleep. From that day on, they awoke only long enough to gather the lotus
flowers and sleep again. Eventually they lost their strength and willpower and
wanted only to drift in and out of sleep.1 The story of the lotus eaters and similar
tales from ancient times show us that drug use is not new. Today this problem
threatens all of our society. The worst, most deadly of drugs, however, is cocaine. This

Because the brain tells the heart how fast and often to beat, using cocaine can make
the heart pump so fast that it damages the muscles or can lead to a heart attack. Since
the brain also tells the lungs how often and how deep to breath, the use of cocaine can
cause those signals to get mixed up leading to a shortness of breath or the complete
failure of the lungs to work causing instant death. The use of cocaine is seriously
addicting.
Monkeys will keep giving themselves doses of cocaine until they die; most people
will follow the same trend.3
The world of sports has many sad examples of people who made the poor choice to
use drugs. Perhaps the saddest is that of Lenny Bias. Len Bias was a star on the
basketball court. He was in perfect health. Len played basketball for the University
of Maryland. Some people thought he would be the best basketball player ever. Then
one day his dreams came true. He was drafted no.
1 by the Boston Celtics to play professional basketball. quot;He could jump through
the roof, quot; said Red Auerbach, president of the Celtics4. Len was so happy that
he went out to celebrate. He snorted cocaine, probably for the first time.
That would be his last time cocaine stopped his heart and he died instantly.
Dr. Louis Caplan, New England Medical Center Hospitals, says that using cocaine is
like taking a chance on sudden death: quot;Cocaine s a loaded gun. quot;5 Len Bias
The Career As A Professional Registered Nurse
The success as a professional Registered Nurse (RN) requires hard work,
compassion and empathy. It is important to realize the journey is challenging, but
is fulfilling. The registered nurse profession was established in the 1800s. For over
two hundred years a registered nurse has helped those in need. The responsibilities
of nurses is to educate their patients on many types of diseases as well as provide
guidance to patients and their loved ones. It is important for nurses to express
compassion, emotional stability, and empathy for patients. Being the largest
healthcare occupation, registered nurses are able to work in a hospital, physician
s office, as well as in home healthcare, with the option to travel. Registered nurses
have the opportunity to travel across the United States to help care for patients
whose access to healthcare is limited. In 2015, the average wage a registered nurse
could earn was $67,500. The general probability of someone starting a career as a
registered nurse is exceptional. In order to become a registered nurse, there are
education requirements to be met. Regardless if the degree is for MSN, BSN,
AND, or a diploma, certain requirements must be met. Typically the BSN degree
takes up to 4 years, ADN 2 to 3 years, and a diploma up to 2 years to complete, with
additional schooling to earn a BSN. A MSN allows a combination of BSN and
accelerated programs for those who already hold a bachelor s degree. The courses
required are anatomy, physiology,
Analysis Of A Long Way Gone By Ishmael Beah
Over the past few months I took the opportunity presented to me in this class to
choose a memoir and write a piece about it later on in the semester. I decided to
choose a story that really stood out to me ever since I first picked it up off of the
bookshelf and read its introduction. The book is called A Long Way Gone, written
by Ishmael Beah. Ishmael Beah is an escaped soldier from the civil war that took
place in Sierra Leone in the mid to late 90 s. In A Long Way Gone, Beah reflects
upon his journey to America and the several trials he had to go through in order to
make it there.
When I first started researching the author of A Long Way Gone, Ishmael Beah, I
was completely amazed at his ability to overcome the mountainous obstacles he
has had to face in his life. Growing up in a third world country is challenging
enough, but to try and survive a civil war and at the same time be forced into
becoming a soldier seems almost unimaginable. On top of all of this, he had to
provide for his family and fight several of his friends from the same tribe who had
also been forced into becoming soldiers themselves. Despite all of this adversity, in
the end, Ishmael is able to escape death, and capture, and eventually flee Sierra
Leone to find a new home at a rehabilitation center in New York City. After reaching
this center, Ishmael is able to share his own incredible story, along with other children
forced into war with members at a convention at the United Nations.
When Ishmael
Brief Biography of Clint Eastwood
Clint Eastwood was born on May 31, 1930, in San Francisco, California, as Clinton
Eastwood Jr. to Clinton Sr. and Ruth Eastwood, with an older sister named Jean.
After looking for work in California during the Depression, the family settled in
Oakland, where he graduated from Oakland Technical High School in 1948. Clint
worked odd jobs, including as a hay baler, logger, truck driver and steel furnace
stoker. In 1950, he joined the military with the Army Special Services, based at
Fort Ord in Monterey, California. While in the Army, he met two actors, David
Janssen and Martin Milner, who convinced him to move out to Los Angeles after
his military duty. Clint took a screen test and signed a contract with Universal
Studios for seventy five dollars a week. The first roles he ever had were in the
films Revenge of the Creature and Tarantula. His first hit was starring on the
television western Rawhide in 1959. After Rawhide he then became very popular
in a string of the director Sergio Leone s spaghetti westerns and the Dirty Harry
Franchise. The spaghetti film were, A Fistful Of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More,
and The Good the Bad and the Ugly between 1964 and 1966. After returning to the
United States, he directed his first film, Play Misty For Me, and starred in the
leading role in 1971. His next project was a series of action movies portraying Harry
Callahan, a contentious San Francisco cop with violent tendencies. The Dirty Harry
series were popular with audiences and

Essay on Gender Equality In Sports
How is it fair that a men s college basketball team is able to be transported on planes
and dine on steak, while a women s team from the same college, travels in a van
and eats fast food? It s not, but this occurs often nowadays even with laws passed
preventing this type of discrimination. In 1972, Congress passed Title IX, which
prohibits discrimination against girls and women in federally funded education,
including athletic programs (Kiernan 3). Many schools and colleges have not been
able to comply with the Title IX standards mostly because of money. Some of the
problems in high schools and colleges consist of insufficient scholarships for girls,
not enough coaching jobs, a lack of equipment, and a limited amount of supplies. Not

Even though institutions are required by law to meet one of those terms, a school
rarely complies sufficiently with Title IX. In fact, at a few schools certain
opportunities have diminished for women. Since Title IX was passed, women s
teams, at some schools, have shrunk due to death of field hockey in 1991 (Pinney
2). Although it is not required for schools to comply, funding for women s teams
have not been equal either. Money is usually a problem with many things in life,
one of them also happens to be gender equality. Colleges and universities spend an
average of $1.6 million on the men s athletics program. Yet, the women s athletic
teams receive nearly half that amount (Almond 2). Women should not be receiving
half the amount that a men s team gets just because their sports are less popular
than men s. A school s main objective may be to promote the men s team first, to
get out of a deficit. Then they may be able to finance the women s team with the
money they make from the men s sporting events. That is not an equal or fair
solution. It would take years to pay off a deficit and then sufficiently finance the
female athletic programs. Numerical equality would take a vast quantity of public
tax money in addition to the financial assistance that now pays for most of women s
sports. Universities increased its support of women s athletics over the years but
according to Ellen Voelz,
Life Of Pi Figurative Language Essay
An author s use of figurative language enables a better understanding of the story
and its characters. Yann Martel s use of metaphor and allegory in his novel Life of
Pi gives a better insight into Pi and his story. The events of Pi s journey are not
necessarily to be taken literally; instead, it is important to think about what they
represent. Pi s ordeal itself and the experiences and places he encounters on the
way are fantastical concepts that symbolize realistic themes. Examples of Martel s
use of figurative language are the island and Richard Parker s presence on the
boat. The algae island symbolizes spiritual death and the dangers of complacency.
When Pi first sees it, he believes it is a delusion. He is overjoyed at finding land,
and he believes it is his salvation. Pi begins to recuperate, [spending] the following
days eating and drinking and bathing and observing the meerkats and walking and
running and resting and growing stronger. [His] running [becomes] smooth . . .
[His] skin heal[s]. [His] aches and pains [leave] [him] . . . [he] return[s] to life.
(Martel 269) After getting over the original fears and doubts that come with the
discovery of the island, he gradually becomes comfortable too comfortable. He
returns to life, and even says that had he not found the teeth in the tree, he might
have lived for years [or] for the rest of [his] life on that island. (279) Pi even
manages to train Richard Parker, to literally make him jump through hoops.

Monopolies, Oligopolies and the Economy Monopolies, Oligopolies and the Economy Monopoly is a term to describe an industry where a seller of a product or service does not have a competitor offering a close substitute. The word is derived from the Greek words monos (meaning one) and polein (meaning to sell). Rarely does a pure monopoly exist. In a pure monopoly there is only one company making and selling the item in question; however there can also be the situation where there is one company who has the bulk of sales and the other firms in the same market have little or no impact on the overriding company. Due to lack of competitors, the monopoly company has control of the supply and price of the good or service, unless there is government intervention. The monopoly will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order for the monopoly to remain, there has to be some sort of barrier to entry for new companies to enter the industry. Examples of barriers to entry would include high start up costs, limited resources, patents or legal barriers. A company can become a monopoly in different ways. In the case of Viagra, although the patent and monopoly were later lost, the company earned its monopoly position by offering the only product approved and patented for erectile dysfunction. In the case of the USPS the government outlawed any competition for them creating a monopoly. While a monopoly usually involves one firm with significant control on the market, an oligopoly contains a few firms. An oligopoly is a market structure where a few companies selling identical or differentiated products control the marketplace. The few players in an industry are usually quite large compared to the market for the product, thus giving these few players an advantage at market control. There are barriers to entry in oligopolies that include patents or government grants, ownership of resources, cost prohibitive barriers, brand equity and diminishing average cost. The leaders of companies within oligopolistic industries monitor decisions made by other players in the industry; this is called interdependency. The major companies within an oligopoly tend to compete through product differentiation or advertising

How I perceive this is that because of the debates between Europe and the other countries, the other countries became a mess and the ideas of Europe helping them on their feet was promising. This seems to be a trick as to get the countries to let Europe help them, but clearly it worked out for the better anyways. Fabri also mentions how England surpasses all other countries and how strong they are with their military. John G. Paton is in favor of this expansion and has written a letter to James Service to urge them to possess the New Hebrides. In this letter he states many reasons as to why they should take control of these islands. A few of these reasons are that they have already taken possession of Fiji and by possessing the rest would complete the chain of islands, they long for British protection and are afraid of the French, almost all the Europeans on the New Hebrides were British

  • 22. Rhetorical Analysis Thoreau Questions on Rhetoric and Style: 1. Describe the tone Thoreau establishes in paragraph 2. How does it contribute to the rhetorical effect of the paragraph? In paragraph two, Thoreau uses a depressing, problematic and facetious tone to get his message across. Thoreau explains how he is strongly against the United States government, and also points out problems of the government. Thoreau uses depressing diction when describing the problems of the government in order to make people feel hatred toward the government and realize how problematic it actually is. Thoreau uses Power of Three to exemplify the problems of the government, and further connects with the audience on an emotional level by pointing out how the citizens help lead to the countries problematic state. Thoreau s use of inappropriate humor when he explains trade makes the United States government seem trivial and almost as a lost cause due to the problems caused by the leaders. His relation of such a serious topic to a comical reference makes it an easier to understand situation. The use of this specific tone creates a more impactful rhetorical effect that is relayed in the paragraph. 3. Thoreau develops many analogies to support his arguments (e.g., in paras. 8 and 9). Select three, and explain whether you find them convincing. How effectively does each one support the claim Thoreau is using it to support? Thoreau s use of analogies to support his arguments are very beneficial in getting his point
  • 23. Watson and Rayner s Unconditional Stimulus Experiment on... Watson and Rayner set out to substantiate his theory by recruiting a subject, who basically stayed in a hospital attached John Hopkins University, and the conducting an experiment on the chosen infant. Their aim was to classically condition the infant to fear a white laboratory rat. The infant, Albert B. or Little Albert , was a physically healthy and emotionally stable 9 month old boy (Watson Rayner, 1920, p. 1). He was described as a very relaxed baby who hardly ever cried. In the emotional tests, before conditioning, Albert was exposed to a series of objects, which included fire, cotton wool, a monkey, a dog, a white rabbit, a mask with hair, and a white laboratory rat. He had not shown a scared or nervous response toward these neutral stimuli, and particularly adored the white laboratory rat. (chaopret 7, p. 239). Firstly, the researchers attempted to identify an unconditioned stimulus. They carried this out by making a loud noise, hitting a hammer against a steel bar, and observing whether the infant responds in fear (learning+c, p.74). In this case, Albert started to cry, which suggested that he was afraid. This gave them the method of testing several important aspects of the experiment. The actual practise of conditioning only started when Albert was 11 months old. The first step Watson and Raymer took towards conditioning Little Albert, was paring the loud noise, unconditioned stimulus, with the white rat, conditioned stimulus. The responses were fear of the

In Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, societal pressure during the Victorian era led to a discovery of the human condition. This is demonstrated through: love, gender roles, and social class. The human condition demonstrates love as a powerful emotion which society cannot condemn. During the Victorian era, society believed love is unacceptable between a master and a governess. However, despite society s belief, Edward confesses his passionate love for Jane as he overlooks societal pressure on their relationship. Edward proves his eternal love for Jane, Every atom of your flesh is as dear to me as my own: in pain and sickness it would still be dear (Bronte 325). Additionally, he declares that he will support Jane through tragic events as he overcomes society s beliefs and discovers love. Consequently, the irony is demonstrated when Edward becomes blind due to a fire and Jane supports him through this event. Similarly, Jane loves Edward passionately even as she separates from him due to unfortunate events. As Jane realizes Edward is married, she decides to leave him and disregard her love; however, she is unable to forget him. Survival in Auschwitz , subtitled and originally titled If This Is A Man , is a novel written by Holocaust survivor Primo Levi detailing the measures he took to survive ten months in Auschwitz. Published in 1959, it was written shortly after World War II and serves as a primary source to its events. Contained in those pages are discussions of the human mental condition when stripped of the conditions and items that create a person s identity and dignity. Upon entry to the concentration camp, all personal effects were taken away including clothing and shoes. The prisoners were given the camp uniform and shoes with wooden soles. While the first World War asked its soldiers to abandon their personal identity to devote themselves to the cause of their country, Auschwitz demanded that its prisoners give up their personal identity in favor of becoming a cog in the machine of the concentration camp. Within Survival in Auschwitz , the concept of what makes a man is questioned and picked apart by Primo Levi. When writing this book, Primo Levi had returned to Italy as a survivor of the Holocaust after being liberated by the Russian Red Army in January 1945. He was lucky to still be in the camp, while many of the other prisoners in Auschwitz were forced on a death march when the Russians neared the camp. Levi had fallen ill with scarlet

They implement many elements to entice the reader to continue with the detective on his quest to solve the riddle and defeat the chaos, which can be divided into two sections: noticeable chaos and silent chaos. Noticeable chaos includes elements such as murder and thievery, obvious aspects of detective fiction that make the reader cringe. Silent chaos, on the other hand, includes locked rooms and settings; things that make the reader shiver because they have no idea why it is affecting them so much. The locked room also appears in The Problem of Cell 13 by Jacques Futrelle; however, the use of the locked room in this short story instills the fear of being imprisoned in the audience, rather than the fear of the unknown. The locked cell is filled with vile creatures and lacks any type of comfort, causing the reader to cringe at the idea of the character being in such a place. In The Adventure of the Speckled Band by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the locked room is the location of a murder as well as the house of the murder weapon. Doyle has the character of the stepfather, Dr. Roylott, lock the snake in a metal safe, which depicts that dangerous things are kept in locked places. Locked rooms in detective fiction have a negative connotation, which the reader can relate to being locked out of communication with society. Authors also create silent chaos in the stories by depicting the regression, or reverse evolution, of mankind. Evolution, as an idea becoming popular in the incipient stages of the detective fiction genre, was a commonly used idea by writers as a way of evoking the fear of a more instinctual side of human beings in the society. Reverse evolution connects with silent chaos because it does not happen right away, it is a slow process which society would not notice

Difference Between Product Revenue And Variable Cost Introduction Background Contribution margin is one of the vital tools utilized throughout the Capsim simulation and business operations in general. Bushong and Talbolt (2001) summarizes the contribution margin ratio as the difference between product revenue and variable cost, over variable cost. Recommendations under the Capsim simulation advised that groups maintained a contribution margin no less than 30% as this will aid in long term business profitability and sustainability (Capsim, 2014). Through the successful understanding and implementation of the contribution margin analysis, business leaders can effectively make decisions regarding price, labor and sales, both pre and post product distribution, that can heavily impact short term and long term profit (Spaller, 2006). Problem Statement Business leaders, and in particular those from the Capsim simulation, who strategize to achieve optimal contribution margin will ultimately have greater profitability and sustainability. The difficulty in accomplishing this vision is that costs for both human and product resources will continue to increase as customer expectations on product and price continue to fluctuate, all of which impact contribution margin (PR Newswire, 2006). However, if ongoing analysis and response to costs and customer fluctuations are adhered, increased contribution margins will have a positive impact on: 1.Increased profitability, 2.Sustained revenue, and 3.Encouragement for efficient

TANF is the final variation today of the many cash assistance programs that are available to children and families. In this paper we also focus on who is eligible for TANF and where the funds are going to. • 41. Comparing Wordsworth and Keats’ Romantic Poetry. Essay Comparing Wordsworth and Keats Romantic Poetry. Both Wordsworth and Keats are romantic Poets, they express ideas on nature and send us the message to respect it. They say we have to admire the beauty of nature in different ways. Wordsworh uses simpler language in his poems wether to express simple or complex ideas, by which we understand he aimed his poems to lower classes. Keats instead, uses much more complex language to describe and express his ideas, so we know he aimed his poems to the educated. During the romnatic period, poets would mainly send out the message to admire nature and see the beauty in it. We should fine joy in nature and nature should be our teacher. He also uses exaggeration to create a greater impact on the reader here as this is the first line of the poem. Keats and Wordworth personify in different ways from each other in the two sonnets. While Wordsworth is more positive and sees beauty in everything, Keats is more balanced ; as a result of this he makes the sea come alive with a more evil and angry character. Alternating moments in which the sea is calm and relaxed, and moments in which it seems evil and angry. Keats also makes us think that the moon has power on the sea as its the moon which makes the sea move; personification makes it seeem magical and powerful. Keats also mentions Hecete who is an evil character that witches used to pray to. Here we see his poems were difinitely aimed to a higher educated class, because a poor and uneducated person couldn t ve understood references to sea nymphs or Hecete. In Daffodils Wordsworth gives a romantic and sentimental tone all the way though. It is a happy poem and it gives out a positive message; to celebrate nature. Its tone is also personal and informal, which we know because Wordsworth uses often the word I as it to mean me talking to you . Comparing daffodils to To Autumn we see that in the second one Keats uses descriptive language and detail, and it s all positive to emphasise the same message as Wordsworth; to

The Difficult Transition from Duvalierism to Democracy in Haiti Haiti has historically been the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, suffering from mismanagement of resources and corrupt rule by the elites. The rule of the Duvaliers had concentrated the wealth of the state in the Duvalier family and its political allies, the Duvalierists. This had been the way Haiti was always run since its independence in 1804: the wealthy, French speaking elite ruling as an oligarchy or dictatorship over the poor, Creole speaking masses. The events that occurred from 1986 to 1995 sought to change Haitian society forever in a transition from predatory dictatorship to popular democracy. However, that path would not be smooth, as the... (Rotberg 107) As his grip on power increased, the exodus of the former elite and educated Haitians increased, leaving Haiti with less skilled workers and an elite that was increasingly black and increasingly loyal to Duvalier. However, he also held onto support from the mulatto bourgeoisie by allowing them to maintain control of the economic sector. Thus, he was able to maintain control over the masses through the control of the two elites and the tontons macoutes a coalition that was called the Duvalierists. (Fatton 56) Just before Duvalier died in 1971, he named his son, Jean Claude, also known as Baby Doc, as his successor. Having grown up in the prestige of Papa Doc, Baby Doc abandoned his relationship with the black bourgeoisie formally upon his marriage to a mulatto, Michele Bennett, whose father grew rich from her relationship with Baby Doc and used the country s money to enrich herself materially. (Gold 221) Taking advantage of increased relative liberalization resulting from a shift to an export oriented economy, opponents of the regime started to express their displeasure at its authoritarian nature through such media as the Church s Radio Soleil and the newspaper Le Petit Samedi Soir. This was sustained through the Carter

Morpheus planted a special purple flower called the lotus. Soon the people of the land smelled the sweet flowers and ate them. They immediately feel into a deep and troubled sleep. From that day on, they awoke only long enough to gather the lotus flowers and sleep again. Eventually they lost their strength and willpower and wanted only to drift in and out of sleep.1 The story of the lotus eaters and similar tales from ancient times show us that drug use is not new. Today this problem threatens all of our society. The worst, most deadly of drugs, however, is cocaine. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because the brain tells the heart how fast and often to beat, using cocaine can make the heart pump so fast that it damages the muscles or can lead to a heart attack. Since the brain also tells the lungs how often and how deep to breath, the use of cocaine can cause those signals to get mixed up leading to a shortness of breath or the complete failure of the lungs to work causing instant death. The use of cocaine is seriously addicting. Monkeys will keep giving themselves doses of cocaine until they die; most people will follow the same trend.3 The world of sports has many sad examples of people who made the poor choice to use drugs. Perhaps the saddest is that of Lenny Bias. Len Bias was a star on the basketball court. He was in perfect health. Len played basketball for the University of Maryland. Some people thought he would be the best basketball player ever. Then one day his dreams came true. Analysis Of A Long Way Gone By Ishmael Beah Over the past few months I took the opportunity presented to me in this class to choose a memoir and write a piece about it later on in the semester. I decided to choose a story that really stood out to me ever since I first picked it up off of the bookshelf and read its introduction. The book is called A Long Way Gone, written by Ishmael Beah. Ishmael Beah is an escaped soldier from the civil war that took place in Sierra Leone in the mid to late 90 s. In A Long Way Gone, Beah reflects upon his journey to America and the several trials he had to go through in order to make it there. When I first started researching the author of A Long Way Gone, Ishmael Beah, I was completely amazed at his ability to overcome the mountainous obstacles he has had to face in his life. Growing up in a third world country is challenging enough, but to try and survive a civil war and at the same time be forced into becoming a soldier seems almost unimaginable. On top of all of this, he had to provide for his family and fight several of his friends from the same tribe who had also been forced into becoming soldiers themselves. Despite all of this adversity, in the end, Ishmael is able to escape death, and capture, and eventually flee Sierra Leone to find a new home at a rehabilitation center in New York City. After reaching this center, Ishmael is able to share his own incredible story, along with other children forced into war with members at a convention at the United Nations. When Ishmael

  • 48. Essay on Gender Equality In Sports How is it fair that a men s college basketball team is able to be transported on planes and dine on steak, while a women s team from the same college, travels in a van and eats fast food? It s not, but this occurs often nowadays even with laws passed preventing this type of discrimination. In 1972, Congress passed Title IX, which prohibits discrimination against girls and women in federally funded education, including athletic programs (Kiernan 3). Many schools and colleges have not been able to comply with the Title IX standards mostly because of money. Some of the problems in high schools and colleges consist of insufficient scholarships for girls, not enough coaching jobs, a lack of equipment, and a limited amount of supplies. Not only... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though institutions are required by law to meet one of those terms, a school rarely complies sufficiently with Title IX. In fact, at a few schools certain opportunities have diminished for women. Since Title IX was passed, women s teams, at some schools, have shrunk due to death of field hockey in 1991 (Pinney 2). Although it is not required for schools to comply, funding for women s teams have not been equal either. Money is usually a problem with many things in life, one of them also happens to be gender equality. Colleges and universities spend an average of $1.6 million on the men s athletics program. Yet, the women s athletic teams receive nearly half that amount (Almond 2). Women should not be receiving half the amount that a men s team gets just because their sports are less popular than men s. A school s main objective may be to promote the men s team first, to get out of a deficit. Then they may be able to finance the women s team with the money they make from the men s sporting events. That is not an equal or fair solution. It would take years to pay off a deficit and then sufficiently finance the female athletic programs. Numerical equality would take a vast quantity of public tax money in addition to the financial assistance that now pays for most of women s sports. Universities increased its support of women s athletics over the years but according to Ellen Voelz,
  • 49. Life Of Pi Figurative Language Essay An author s use of figurative language enables a better understanding of the story and its characters. Yann Martel s use of metaphor and allegory in his novel Life of Pi gives a better insight into Pi and his story. The events of Pi s journey are not necessarily to be taken literally; instead, it is important to think about what they represent. Pi s ordeal itself and the experiences and places he encounters on the way are fantastical concepts that symbolize realistic themes. Examples of Martel s use of figurative language are the island and Richard Parker s presence on the boat. The algae island symbolizes spiritual death and the dangers of complacency. When Pi first sees it, he believes it is a delusion. He is overjoyed at finding land, and he believes it is his salvation. Pi begins to recuperate, [spending] the following days eating and drinking and bathing and observing the meerkats and walking and running and resting and growing stronger. [His] running [becomes] smooth . . . [His] skin heal[s]. [His] aches and pains [leave] [him] . . . [he] return[s] to life. (Martel 269) After getting over the original fears and doubts that come with the discovery of the island, he gradually becomes comfortable too comfortable. He returns to life, and even says that had he not found the teeth in the tree, he might have lived for years [or] for the rest of [his] life on that island. (279) Pi even manages to train Richard Parker, to literally make him jump through hoops.
