Attitudes of Respiratory Therapists and Nurses About Measures to Prevent Ventilator Associated
Pneumonia: A Multicenter, Cross Sectional Survey Study
Title of Article:
The title of the article Attitudes of Respiratory Therapists and Nurses About Measures to Prevent
Ventilator Associated Pneumonia: A Multicenter, Cross Sectional Survey Study clearly identifies
the purpose of the study. It clearly identifies the dependent variable as Ventilator Associated
Pneumonia (VAP) rate, the independent variable of staff compliance to prevention measures, and
the population of Respiratory Therapists (RTs) and Registered Nurses (RNs).
Objective:
The authors clearly state the objective is to understand reported practices and adherences to
evidenced based guidelines by RTs and RNs. The methods mentioned are; multicenter, cross
sectioned survey, non identifiable geographic information, and questions concerning practices to
prevent VAP based on evidence supported guidelines. The authors report three major findings;
participants frequently practiced VAP prevention measures, the rate of adherence to ineffective
measures is relatively high, and a substantial portion did not know the VAP rate for their
institutions. The authors concluded consumers, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and
other organization s efforts to implement mandatory reporting of hospital infections, including VAP,
the need for a VAP definition suitable for individual organizations, a need for a

Argumentative Statement On Flag Burning
In a cosmopolitan nation full of diversity like the United States, conflicts are bound to arise
between cultures and races with different views. However, in order to maintain the diversity,
people must be willing to understand and accept others opinions. This ideal has been tested by
citizens in the US in many conflicts as people mistreat others. People exclude or mistreat others
who are different, but should acceptthem for the good of society as long as violence doesn t break
out.
The accepting of differences will strengthen the community and help everyone keep an open mind.
From Texas v. JohnsonMajority Opinion , William J. Brennan explains the statement that justifies
flag burning, and, though controversial, finding closure for this matter: Our decision is a
reaffirmation of the principles of freedom and inclusiveness that the flag reflects, and of the
conviction that our toleration of criticism is our sign and source of our strength (Brennan 16).
Brennan explains that though many are concerned with the idea that flag burning is legal and take
action against it, they should take the other route instead. That is to say, to uphold the ideals the US
Constitution promises, people must tolerate flag burning as it is a form of communication towards
society. In addition, people have the obligation to influence and convince those protesters to
reevaluate their actions and errors. Brennan s statement portrays that even though a problem can
attract controversy, it is

Argumentative Essay On Sports Are Good
Some think sports are gook but others think they are bad, some say they do not help you, some
say they do, well this article going to tell parents some facts about an opinion. Children can get
lots of exercise when people play competitive sports and children will get better grades in school.
One reason about competitive sports are good are, competitive sports are good because there are
so many reasons why sports give people exercise and children get better grades in school. In the
article espn.com by Bruce Kelly he mentions a quote said by Sports and Fitness Industry
Association or SFIA that says, 21.47 million kids between 6 and 17 play sports. Research sample
of 2,185 students in 2007 for the Women s Sports Foundation and found that... Show more content

There are just so many injury s that children could hurt themselves and might never recover from
the injury. The first reason to support that is from the article Listening to Wisdom from a 10 year
old Son about His Head Injury by, Adam Buckley Cohen and the childwas talking, he said, Dad, I
m scared. I only have one brain, and I don t want to hurt it playing football. My son Will, his 10
year old eyes filling with tears, was trying to decide whether to play quarterback in his peewee
game against Roosevelt Elementary. I ve become all too familiar with accounts of N.F.L.
veterans exhibiting Alzheimer s like symptoms in their 40s, of teenagers dying after playing too
soon after a concussion. This supports the main idea because, it is arguing that it doesn t matter
that a lot of people play sports it is just too high risk of getting injured. The second reason is,
from Hey, data data swing by Bruce Kelley and Carl Carchia, they say The No. 1 fear of sports
parents is seeing their child injured on the field. And due to the United States growing
population and sports participation, that s now more common roughly 2.7 million kids under
20 were treated for sports and recreation injuries from 2001 to 2009. This supports the claim
because, It is stating that a lot of people get injured and it is not worth playing if people get
injured. The Final reason is from the article High Cost of Youth Sports by visualNews.com they
said In the United States, parents spend $671 on average per year to cover the costs of uniforms
and the hefty fees charged for registration, lessons and coaching, and at least 1 in 5 ends up
spending over $1,000 per child, every year. This supports the claim because, This means that people

The Paralysis of Prufrock in The Love Song of J. Alfred...
Paralysis, the incapability to act, has been a key element of many famous literary characters.
Shakespeare s Hamlet is the paragon of paralysis, unable to sort through his thoughts, Hamlet
only makes one decisive action, at the end of the play. T.S Elliot s transfers Hamlets paralysis in
his poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. The name Elliot chose for this indecisive, timid
man epitomizes his character as well as his flaws. J. Alfred Prufrock needs this ranting monologue
in order for him to understand the severity of his paralysis and fear of women and society. Elliot s
poetryis a melting pot of literary allusions and references. The first lines are directly quoted from
Dante s Inferno. Prufrock, as can be interpreted from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the next stanza, Prufrock tells himself repeatedly that indeed there will be time. This repetition
is used in order to display Prufrock re assuring himself that he does not need to meet the women in
the room just yet, there will be time for himself and the woman he loves to meet and talk. Prufrock
believes that there is enough time for his hundred of indecisions and revisions before the taking of
a toast and tea.
Not only does Prufrock seem to be afraid of confronting woman talking of Michelangelo, he
seems intimidated by the social settings he must engage in. There will be time, there will be
time, To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet, There will be time to murder and create,
And time for all the works and days of hands That lift and drop a question on your plate (26 29)
Prufrock s social anxiety results in his worrying how others see him. He thinks about women s
arms and perfume, but does not know how to act. He admits he is ultimately afraid (line 86) of
engaging in social activities. Elliot reveals the height of Prufrock s paralysis by scrutinizing the
absurdity of Prufrock s concerns: Should I, after tea and cakes and ices, / Have the strength to
force the moment to its crisis? In the next few stanzas, Prufrock describes himself balding, middle
aged, and plain in order to draw in the reader to the point of view of the society. As detailed as
Prufrock scrutinizes his physical appearance, he feels the

The Beaten Track Quotes
While Mrs Herriton sees Lilia s journey to Italy as an educational trip, Lilia, on the other hand,
sees it rather as an opportunity to finally loosen the grip from her mother in law. People who
travel to a country they have never been before are usually following a guidebook, which leads
them down the beaten track , argues James Buzard (4). You go not where you want to go but
where the industry has decreed you shall go (Paul Fussell qtd in Buzard 3). Instead of following
directions again and doing what Mrs Herriton would expect of her, Lilia decides not to. She rather
explores the villages and people beyond the beaten track . By doing so, she takes the first step
away from England. On her excursion beyond the path, she meets the twenty one... Show more

the Spanish brought this sweet treat back, Europe fell in love with it. The French colonized the
western coast of Africaand started to grow the chocolate there because it was closer to Europe.
Although chocolate is good for the Ivory Coast s economy it has severe negative side effects to
the land and people around the area. The production of chocolate is ruining the environment,
causing illegal and dangerous child labor, and the workers are not getting paid well enough for the
work they do.

Kate Chopin, An American Writer
Kate Chopin, an American writer, known for her vivid portrayals of women s lives during the
late 1800s. Her fiction works usually set in Louisiana, which contributed too much of her
description of women s roles. During Chopin s time, Louisiana was in the midst of reconstruction
and was having racial and economic issues. (Skaggs 4) Louisiana is the setting for many of
Chopin s stories, and they depict a realistic picture of Louisiana society. Kate Chopin published two
novels and many short stories. Most of Chopin s work challenged whether or not women should
continue to follow the traditions of their time. Skaggs stated that critics described Chopin as a
feminist, a local colorist, a regionalist, a romantic, a neotranscendentalist, an... Show more content

As the exhaustion of liberty finally sets in, Mrs. Mallard loses it all in an instance.
Chopin is considered a regional writer, and her setting often plays as important a role in the story
as do her characters, such as in The Storm, the hurricane leaves Calixta alone causing the events
that follow (Jaroff 1). The Storm discusses a woman trapped inside an old, wooden cabin during a
storm. The woman seems fragile and scared. For example, the woman s son says, Mama ll be
fraid...Maybe she got Sylvie helpin her this evenin (Chopin 1). As she awaited the storm to pass in
the store, Calixta was at home gathering all the clothing from the lines, when a man showed up that
she had not seen since her marriage. In The Storm, it describes a married woman who has never
been alone since her marriage. Implying that her marriage is confining her. Although she married
at a young age, she never lost sight of her cheerfulness. The women were crying for their families
to come home safe and sound from the storm, but as she looked out the window, the man came
and put his arm around her shoulder to comfort her. As they begin to have an affair, it was almost
as if they are trying to go against the traditions. During this time in history, women could not just
be free, so Chopin begins to argue that freedom is crucial. Women should be able to make their
choices as to how they want to live. The storm signifies a disaster, but in

Cobain And Nirvana
Kurt Cobain and Nirvana Nirvana was a band started by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic in the
early 90 s. They d released several albums before April 5, 1994, when Kurt Cobain supposedly took
his own life. Nirvana was very popular during its time, but of course, Kurt had a life before he met
Krist and before Nirvanawas born. There was also a lot the band had done together before the date
of April 5, when Nirvana had to end. Kurt Cobain did a lot before he started Nirvana. As a child,
Kurt Cobain loved art and music. He showed talent in both areas. He taught himself to play piano
and he played guitar, also little league baseball. (Kurt Cobain biography.com) Also said by
Rolling Stone, He came from a musical family. . . At four, Cobain began singing and playing
piano, and gravitated to the music of bands ranging from the Beatles to the Ramones. When Kurt
was fourteen, he got his first guitar and learned to play. He dropped out of high school his senior
year due to bullying, and then he started hanging around local band rehearsals.

Nirvana was ended on April 5, 1994, when Kurt Cobain allegedly took his own life. On April 8,
Cobain s body was found with a gunshot wound in his head. Not everybody believes it was
suicide though, some believe Courtney Love, his own wife, hired someone to kill him for her,
and made it look as if it were a suicide. Although it does not matter now. Unfortunately Nirvana is
no longer a band and there is no way to undo that, but the former members of Nirvana went on
and continued making music, it was Nirvana s passion. Thankfully, Cobain s music is still
remembered and loved, and it will be remembered and loved from the time it was number one.

First Opium War Research Paper
Good morning class and Mrs Bennett. The Hypothesis for this topic is that the First Opium War
caused problems in society because the criminal rate increased, as well as the local consumption of
the drug. This presentation will be discussing mainly what opium is, what the first opium war was,
and why it started. The Opium War was a battle in Chinathat occurred during the mid 19th century.
This war was between western countries, such as Britain, and the Qing Dynasty, which ruled China
between 1644 and 1911.
The First Opium War was conducted from 1839 to 1842, and was between China and Britain. The
reasoning for the war occurring was caused by China s attempts to withhold the Opium trade. It was
over diplomatic relations, trade, and the administration of foreign nationals in China. Opium was
illegally being imported into China, through India, by the British. They grew the opium on their
plantations in India. At first, the British were addicted to stimulating Chinese tea. Trade imbalance
occurred due to the Chinese buying few European products and demanding Gold or Silver in return.
The reverse flow of Silver and the increasing number of opium addicts alarmed Chinese officials,
and resulted in over 20,000 chests of opium to be confiscated. As opium was being imported into
china, it caused unrest in society, the local consumption to increase, and the decrease in the price of
the drug. Being a stimulant drug, Opium spread throughout the country, badly affecting its nation....

Four Parenting Styles
When we are discussing parent methods we need to be aware there are many factors that affect
how parent develop their children. There is a social factor that affects how we develop our child.
This different factor affects parents and how they believe a child should act and behave. Mothers
and father both play a huge roll in a child development. How a mother and father choose to parent
their children also affect what kind of person the child will become. There are four different
parentingmethods this is authoritative, permissive, authoritarian, uninvolved and passive parenting
styles. This dimension affects a parent and child relationship.

Authoritative parenting styles are when a parent demands and maintain a high level of control
over the children but also warm and receptive. Permissive parenting style is when the parent
places few controls or demand on the child. Authoritarian parenting styles are when the parent is
strict, punitive and not warm. Uninvolved parents give children a lot of freedom and generally
stay out of their way. Some parents may make a conscious decision to parent in this way, while
others are less interested in parenting or unsure of what to do. Uninvolved parenting styles allow
the child to do as they see fit. A parent who due to this parenting style out of lack of information
and care. Often the children lack nurturing and there are few or no expectations of children. When
reviewing this four different parenting styles we can see that due to the diverse parenting styles the
child development may be complex. Mother and father both can use any or all this parenting styles
that best fit the development application of a child in the different area of development. (Seccombe,

Parking Policies on Campus Essay
As a non traditional student of the University Mary Hardin Baylor, I can say parking policies
could use some changes. I understand the need for parking policies for safety and security
reasons, but some parking rules are just ridiculous. My family has four vehicles, only one of them
has a UMHB parking sticker. This sticker was issued at registration; it is one of the many hidden
fees that are added into tuition. I sometimes drive different vehicles to campus. When I drive
different vehicles, I have to go to campus police to get a temporary parking permit. However, I do
have the option to purchase a sticker for each vehicle, if I want to pay fifteen dollars for each sticker.
Another parking issue is that vehicles cannot be pulled through or... Show more content on

If vehicles have been parked incorrectly, a citation will be issued. I have read several studies that
state, pulling through or backing into a parking space is safer, it is a good idea for several of
reasons. It is easier to pull out into traffic instead of backing out into traffic. There is also a
better view when leaving. When backing out blind spots could cause an accident, pulling out into
traffic the driver has full visibility. The drivers are aware of the other vehicles and pedestrians
around them. Then, when they go to leave, they have good, clear view to pull out. There is even a
policy on where students are allowed to park. If a student parks in the restricted areas, or is parked
incorrectly, they will be issued a citation.
Additional parking stickers mean additional fees for the student. College is already expensive,
extra fees are just a way for the college to get more money. Since all vehicles must have a parking
permit I have to go get a temporary parking permit every time I use other vehicles. This is time
consuming and having to go by the campus police to get a parking permit is inconvenient. I
work a full time job as well as going to college full time, so my time is limited. I drop my youngest
son off at school on my way to campus, so my mornings are already busy. As soon as class is over,
I go straight to work. I leave work to come straight to campus for evening classes. Sometimes, I
have just enough time to get to class. If I have to stop

Nevertheless, they still could prove to be beneficial towards my final project.
Regarding my question, I am trying to find a variety of sources which portray differing
perspectives as I not only intend on recounting the actions of the West German Authorities, but also
portray differing views and criticisms of their response. From what I have gathered from my initial
research, these historical interpretations don t necessarily derive from specific schools of thought
(as the event is quite recent) but more so from differing sociopolitical/cultural regions of the world.
These include a Western view, such as American Simon Reeve, Israeli view such as Yarin Kimor
and German perspective such as Manfried Schreiber. Furthermore, some of these sources aren t
necessarily historical scholars but rather journalists, experts in their respective field, or simply
significant characters surrounding the crisis.
Another one of the major issues surrounding this topic is the limited amount of information
readily available. However, I have not let that deter me in fact I have used it as a motivating
force. I believe that this essay will, to a degree, be groundbreaking, as it looks specifically at the
numerous errors and inadequate preparation by the West Germans. This is something very few of

Criticism Of Lolita
Introduction
Valdimir Nobokov is a Russian born writer, who was not a known face among English speaking
literary society, before the publication of Lolita. Lolita was rejected four times before it was
finally published by the Olympia Press in Paris, which has published many controversial works
by the writers like Jean Genet. Some readers are disappointed by the book s lack of overtly sexual
content while some labelled it as immoral.
Nabokov s fiction is not for passive readers who resist being drawn into the author s linguistic
games. Lolita is full of puns, coinages (such as nymphet ), neologisms, foreign, archaic, and
unusual words. Lolita is drunk on language; a typical sentence reads, I spend my doleful days in
dumps and dolors. In his afterword, Nabokov says the novel is about his love affair with the
English language.
The fictitious John Ray, Jr., PhD, reveals the peculiar story of Lolita. According to him, he
received a holograph named Lolita , or the Confession of a White Widowed Man, from the writer s
lawyer. The author himself acknowledged through the pseudonym of Humbert Humbert H.H, who
died in the prison of coronary thrombosis at the same time as awaiting a tribulation.

The Creation Of Teddy Bears Built A Sense Of Self
The Creation of Teddy Bears Built a Sense of Self in our Children
Children are the freshman in this world. They are discovering the world, and at the same time,
themselves. In their early stages of exploration positive and negative experiences are gained, in
which they approach different methods to manage their emotions and learn from them. In the
reading, Transitional Objects as Objectifiers of the Self in Toddlers and Adolescents by Johanna K.
Tabin, the author mentions that the bond created between toys and children helps them obtain
power to transition from one frightful life situation to another. Likewise, Elena O. Smirnova, the
writer of Character toys as psychological tools, explains that a child s self reflects on their persona
by communicating with a toy; thus, these toys are called character toys. Both writers agreed that
toys play a major role in the construction of children s sense of self. Additionally, these authors also
implied that there are special toys that children connect to. Carmen Rosa Caldas Coulthard and
Theo Van Leeuwen argued, in Teddy BearStories, that children are mostly attracted to teddy bears
because of its physicality and similar behavior. Thus, teddy bears are commonly children s favorite
toy of choice, which teddy bears become children s transitional object and character toy. This paper
will argue that teddy bears help children create a sense of self by allowing them to reflect about
their inner thoughts, explore their

Cinderella Brothers Grimm And The Little Glass Slipper
We have all heard the Disney story, Cinderella, right? Well, who knew that there could be more than
just one version? In the two stories Cinderella Brothers Grimm and The Little Glass Slipper, They
have a majority of themes, characters, settings, and other things that were not mentioned in the
original Cinderella. Because of the new and interesting versions, comparing and contrasting come
in handy. So, how do the two newer versions relate to one another, and how do the new versions
relate to the original story? How are they different? In the two stories, Cinderella Brothers Grimm
and the little glass slipper the settings are very different at some points in the story. In Brothers
Grimm, Ashpuddle, who is also known as Cinderella, visits her mother s grave three times a day.
This does not happen in the original story and it also doesn t happen in The Little Glass Slipper.

Basically, all the themes mentioned throughout either story could fit in with both! We have all
heard the theme, Treat other the way you want to be treated. Well, this theme goes along with the
stories because everyone believes that Cinderella should be treated better by all of her step family.
The sisters and mother should treat Cinderella how they would want to be treated. For example,
they should have let Cinderella go to the ball! In The Little Glass Slipper it states, Lend my
clothes to such a dirty Cinderwench as you are! I should be such a fool. This is one of the
stepsisters, charlotte, talking to Cinderella. How we she like cinderella talking to her like that? In
Brothers Grimm Cinderella, the author wrote, You have no proper clothes, and you do not know
how to dance. You would be laughed at! This was said by the stepmother to Cinderella, and it is
just as rude as what was said in The Little Glass Slipper. Therefore, we know that both stories have

Essay on The Landlords of the Oceans
The Landlords of the Oceans
Have you ever thought about the landlords of the oceans? There is a saying: Big fish eats the
smaller ones. The most powerful and deadly animals who taste the freedom of the sea world are
whales. So many kinds of whales exist. One of the most interesting kinds is the bottle nosed whale.
It is no wonder why they are given this name. Their bulbous forehead and elongated snout give
them a unique character. Besides these unique physical characteristics, they have other special
qualities as well including their rarity and their enormous size. Northern species and southern
species are the two types of bottle nosed whales that are categorized by the difference in their size,
living habitats and mating seasons. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Northern species are gray with a lighter underside and a pale band around the neck. The color of
southern species varies more; they have blue black, gray, brown or yellow bodies and light
colored snouts and undersides. However, they share a common treat, males have two conical teeth
in the lower jaw and females have no teeth. In short, the size, color and the shape of bottle nosed
whales vary according to where they are found.
The second quality is their living habitats. Both of the species usually inhabit cold waters deeper
than 3000ft. They are most often observed in deep trenches or canyons in the sea floor. Northern
bottle nosed whales live in the North Atlantic. Significant populations are found in a vast undersea
canyon near Sable Island, Nova Scotia, and north and west of Scotland near the Shetland Islands,
the Orkney Islands, and the Outer Hebrides Islands. Southern bottle nosed whales range throughout
the Southern Hemisphere from Antarcticanorth to the equator. In winter, they are sighted
occasionally off the coasts of the Hawaiian Islands and Japan, as well as in the Pacific and Indian
oceans. The third quality is their mating. Both southern and northern species mating takes place
during the spring. After a gestational period of about 11 months, female bottle nosed whales
deliver a single baby and then nurse it for nearly a year. They give birth every two or three years.

The Consequences Of Human Rights In The Holocaust
Renowned Zimbabwean revolutionary Robert Mugabe states, Cooperation and respect for each
other will advance the course of human rights worldwide. Confrontation, vilification, and double
standards will not. This quote vocalizes what human rights are and the steps necessary for liberty.
However, this set of rights are constantly in violation of mankind itself in innumerable instances.
The most evident event that violated these rights is the Holocaustin World War II. This Holocaust
was the persecution of Jews and people deemed unfit by Adolf Hitler, leader of the Nazi Party
during the nineteen thirties and forties. Though this catastrophic event caught the attention of the
world, this is not the only time in history human rightsbeing in violation. The Japanese effort in
World War II to create biological weapons for the war is another example of human rights being
taken away by mankind. After this war, the United Nations created a Universal Declaration of
Human Rights , Article Five stating, No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or
degrading treatment or punishment.
Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Elie Wiesel, wrote the memoir, Night, that captured the hearts of
millions of people in his survival of the Holocaust as a Jew. One event Elie recalled is his first
time in the concentration camp, Auschwitz. Yes, I did see this, with my own eyes... children

Competitive Cycles Of Cognitive Communication
The third phase is conflict interaction, which is the parties response to a perceived conflict which
is made up of communication, of interactive cycles of messages, responses, and counter responses
(Conrad Poole, 1998). Once these cycles commence the outcome is not in the control of one
participant, but parties make choices about how they respond based off of clues that they get from
the other s communication(Conrad Poole, 1998). The interaction between Allison, Craig, and
Penelope shows this cycle of conflictinteraction.
The first part of this interactive cycle is when Allison first message Craig on Tuesday to ask him
for help while explaining that Penelope treating her like a subordinate which is creating an
unproductive work environment. Next, Craig responds to the message by trying to set up a meeting
the three of them, but Penelope is the only one who can meet and alerts Craig that she wants to talk

tension between Allison and Penelope. Allison s counter response to her interpretation Craig s
meeting with Penelope is her Thursday email, about how she felt disturbed, explains a past conflict,
and then threatens to consider alternate employment.
As shown above the interactive cycles have become trapped in escalating cycles of competitive
communication. Through Allison s interpretation of Craig and Penelope s meeting, she has started

Why Is Siddhartha Important
Sometimes, in life we lose everything that we deem as important so that we are able to find out
what truly is. The two works that I ll be examining correspond to this statement. By examining the
works Siddhartha by Herman Hesse and The History by Herodotus, we can see that being happy in
life doesn t always come easily and there are some bumps along the road to get there. Siddhartha
shows us that in order to achieve the happiness that we want, we have to look at the life we are
living at the moment and decide if it is what we really want. And The History also shows us that
in order to achieve the happiness we want in life, we have to reflect on the life we ve lived and
make a change. Siddhartha and Croesus teach us that the obstacles we face are the stepping stones...

following the path he was supposed to, he actually was not. What Siddhartha needed to do was
reevaluate his existence and figure out which path he was going to take to correct all of the

Samoan Culture Research Paper
The Samoan Culture The Samoan Culture is a very diverse and completely different one from the
American culture. The Samoan people do and view many things in different perspectives from the
American people. For one thing, they are located on completely opposite sides of the world. Both
the Samoan and American cultures do things in their own unique ways. The differences in culture
can be perceived through their language, religion, clothes and food. Also the music they listen to,
holidays they celebrate, traditions, and housing. Samoan people are bilingual; they can speak both
English and Samoan. However, the Samoan language most likely dominates the culture because it
is mostly spoken there. In the United States, there is no official language, although most people
speak English like some Samoan people. Nearly every language imaginable is spoken in the United

The Red Dress by Alice Munro- STRIPPED OF OPPRESSION
Throughout life there is always one person who influences you, impacts your decisions and aids
you in your struggle for identity. It is of no importance whether or not that person is male or
female, friend or family, younger or older. In the story The Red Dress by Alice Munro, the character
Mary Fortune represents this individual; this influence. The main characterin the narrative, who
remains nameless, is only able to discover herself through the help of another. Mary Fortune
instilled a sense of confidencein the main character by presenting her a path that lead away from the

I stayed until I could not stand it any more, and then I took a handful of snow from the windowsill
and smeared it all over my chest, before I buttoned my pajamas.
Alice Munro conveys the girl as being an extremely insecure, shy and frightened individual. We are
able to view these traits at their greatest at the school dance. The first guy that the main character
finds herself dancing with is the popular Manson Williams. However, her nervousness and lack of
confidence leads her hands to shake and her to stumble all over the dance floor. In fact, she is so
uncomfortably nerve racking that Manson leaves her on the edge of the floor alone.
He took his hand from my waist and dropped my arm. See you he said. He walked away.
Since the girl is not confident about herself, she is unable to be at ease around others, especially
those of the opposite sex. Her discomfort actually makes the people in her presence feel
apprehensive. Due to this, she views herself as a loser and an exile, (see quotation below), one of
the reasons why she dislikes school and social events. Her apprehensiveness makes her body shut
down and unable to function.
I myself was not angry or surprised at Manson; I accepted his position, and mine, in the world of
school and I saw that what he had done was the realistic thing to do. He was a Natural Hero...

Furthermore, the current generation, recognising the same meanings to a certain extent, also linked

climactic scenes from national television and mainstream commercial films such as Godzilla. The
visual of the landmark conjures up the overwhelming myth (Barthes 239), inducing spectators with

Cause for Action
Imagine a country where a person s belongings could be taken at any moment and then given to
someone else for no apparent reason. Likewise, that same person s culture, their way of life, would
be disregarded, and they would be forced to use a new language and adapt to a different culture.
After the culture is done away with, those who remember it die off rapidly. Even with the declining
culture, religious persecution becomes apparent along with the long political conflicts. This very
incident occurred at the end of the 19th century. It happened in Ireland to the Gaelic culture, but a
man by the name of Douglas Hyde wasn t about to let his culture disappear. Thus the Gaelic League

Many Irish then tried to immigrate to America. What used to be a small amount of immigrants,
turned into a flood of Irish wanting to leave Ireland. Because of the high demand of people wanting
to leave quickly, the normal route of stopping in Liverpool turned into a straight shot to America.
Most immigrants died en route from diseases, and many died when ships frequently would sink,
due to holding more than their maximum capacity. This was one reason for a tremendous drop in
the Irish population.
By 1891, 14.5% of the Irish nation claimed to speak the language.
The Gaelic Athletic Association was a vital precursor to the formation of the Gaelic League. It was
established on November 1st, 1884. One of the Gaelic Athletic Association s goals was to construct
games promoting the Gaelic culture, and provide rules and encouragement to the people of Ireland
to participate in Irish recreation and sports. It first concerned itself with the athletics. The
association set up competitions at local parishes and other places throughout the counties. This
renewed a sensation of pride for the disturbed Irish people. Once after a hurling match in 1885,
approximately fifteen thousand people attended a meeting by the Gaelic Athletic Association in
support of the athletics which was a significant success for the association. Not long after, the first

s Sermonsrelate to the combative relationship between Father Flynn and Sister Aloysius.
The first sermon that Father Flynn presents to the congregation is doubt, a theme that he believes
afflicts many of the those in faith. In his sermon Father Flynn tells the story of a sailor stranded

school and his difficulties in reading to become a famous writer.
Victor had many advantages to be a successful student. He was born in a rich family. His parents,
Salvador and Lupe, were wealthy landowners and their rancho, where they had built a beautiful
home, was very large. The rancho gave a healthy lifestyle for all his family members. Before
starting kindergarten, Victor could ride horses like an adult and was ready to live as a cowboy.

Those made him think of justice after all years: He wanted to kill Moses and all of teachers who
abused him and Mexican kids. However, when he saw his father forgiving a doctor who was the
main reason of Joseph s death, he quit his revenge and excused those teachers.
Victor devoted his life to write although he could not read well. After writing for 13 years and
receiving over 260 rejections, he finally got his first book published in 1973. His publicist
requested him to attend the California Association of Teachers of English Conference and be part
of a workshop. Unfortunately, when the planned keynoter for the convention was delayed and other
authors in attendance did not volunteer to give a speech, Victor said he could.
He had planned to talk about his book Macho, but when he faced the crowd of teachers, his
experience at school came back into his mind. He said he had faced a lot of abuse and his efforts
to overcome bad teaching and become a writer. He admired good teachers with all his heart but
criticized bad teachers. That presentation was not what the audience expected. Some reacted cruelly
and left, but most of audience stayed and listened to him. After that, Victor was invited to give more
speeches to let the audience know what worked in their education system.
In 1985, he found out that his two boys and he got dyslexia. Victor himself was so far of the chart

Analysis Of The Film Cool Hand Luke
Cool Hand Luke Film Analysis The film, Cool Hand Luke, directed by Stuart Rosenberg and
produced by Gordon Carroll, was released in November 1967. It is an American prison drama
film about a former soldier who is sent to jail for taking the heads off of parking meters. Luke, the
protagonist, is sentenced to two years in a chain gang prisonran by severe guardians. If the
prisoners violate the rules it results in spending the night in the box , which is a small room with
limited air and limited space to move. Most of them follow every rule, while Luke is alienated at
the prison. He does not take the regulations seriously, which always gets him into trouble. This film
presents several examples of religious symbolism and themes which will be analyzed through the
character of Luke, which is often applied in the film to add depth to his character. In Cool Hand Luke
, there are some scenes in which the theme of crucifixion is depicted. One of the scenes is when
Luke ingests fifty eggs, which represents the souls of the earth Christ died for on the cross (Christ
Imagery in Cool Hand Luke). This happen when all the prisoners gather around him while Dragline
served him the eggs. Luke accepted the challenge to prove himself to the inmates and to get the
money from all the bets made on him. Whenever he finishes eating, he lies on the table with his
arms extended. This scene alludes and emphasizes to Christ crucifixion. Even though the audience
does not know why exactly Luke was

Analysis Of The Danger Of A Single Story
Coming from a conventional, middle class Nigerian family, where her father was a professor
and her mother was an administrator, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie lived a normal life exposed
to the typical books of white, blue eyed characters playing with snow, eating apples, and drinking
ginger beer. However, she realizes that literature didn t always contain the same characteristics
as the books she had read growing up and that people like her, girls with the skin color of
chocolate, whose kinky hair could not form ponytails can exist in literature (2:15). Through this
experience, it saved her from having a single story of what books are (2:36). Her TED talk, The
Danger of a Single Story , filmed on July of 2009, with over 13 million views, is a reflective
speech that allows the audience to deeply consider how they judge people, places, and/or
cultures. She explains how narrow mindedness, stereotypes, and conflicts could be established
through the exposure of one single story as it prevents us from seeing things in any other light.
Her audience is generally towards older Americans, starting from teens and beyond, because she
discusses her speech in the perspective of a woman who lives in the United States. Although she
discusses her opinions and thoughts as an American, her TED talk is for the general public, as we
all have made false judgements of people, places, and/or cultures based on a single story. I agree
with Adichie s thesis that the dangers of a single story can

  • 3. Argumentative Statement On Flag Burning In a cosmopolitan nation full of diversity like the United States, conflicts are bound to arise between cultures and races with different views. However, in order to maintain the diversity, people must be willing to understand and accept others opinions. This ideal has been tested by citizens in the US in many conflicts as people mistreat others. People exclude or mistreat others who are different, but should acceptthem for the good of society as long as violence doesn t break out. The accepting of differences will strengthen the community and help everyone keep an open mind. From Texas v. JohnsonMajority Opinion , William J. Brennan explains the statement that justifies flag burning, and, though controversial, finding closure for this matter: Our decision is a reaffirmation of the principles of freedom and inclusiveness that the flag reflects, and of the conviction that our toleration of criticism is our sign and source of our strength (Brennan 16). Brennan explains that though many are concerned with the idea that flag burning is legal and take action against it, they should take the other route instead. That is to say, to uphold the ideals the US Constitution promises, people must tolerate flag burning as it is a form of communication towards society. In addition, people have the obligation to influence and convince those protesters to reevaluate their actions and errors. I only have one brain, and I don t want to hurt it playing football. My son Will, his 10 year old eyes filling with tears, was trying to decide whether to play quarterback in his peewee game against Roosevelt Elementary. I ve become all too familiar with accounts of N.F.L. veterans exhibiting Alzheimer s like symptoms in their 40s, of teenagers dying after playing too soon after a concussion. This supports the main idea because, it is arguing that it doesn t matter that a lot of people play sports it is just too high risk of getting injured. The second reason is, from Hey, data data swing by Bruce Kelley and Carl Carchia, they say The No. 1 fear of sports parents is seeing their child injured on the field. The Hypothesis for this topic is that the First Opium War caused problems in society because the criminal rate increased, as well as the local consumption of the drug. This presentation will be discussing mainly what opium is, what the first opium war was, and why it started. The Opium War was a battle in Chinathat occurred during the mid 19th century. This war was between western countries, such as Britain, and the Qing Dynasty, which ruled China between 1644 and 1911. The First Opium War was conducted from 1839 to 1842, and was between China and Britain. The reasoning for the war occurring was caused by China s attempts to withhold the Opium trade. It was over diplomatic relations, trade, and the administration of foreign nationals in China. Opium was illegally being imported into China, through India, by the British. They grew the opium on their plantations in India. At first, the British were addicted to stimulating Chinese tea. Trade imbalance occurred due to the Chinese buying few European products and demanding Gold or Silver in return. The reverse flow of Silver and the increasing number of opium addicts alarmed Chinese officials, and resulted in over 20,000 chests of opium to be confiscated. When backing out blind spots could cause an accident, pulling out into traffic the driver has full visibility. The drivers are aware of the other vehicles and pedestrians around them. However, she realizes that literature didn t always contain the same characteristics as the books she had read growing up and that people like her, girls with the skin color of chocolate, whose kinky hair could not form ponytails can exist in literature (2:15).
