My Photography Ethnography
The story in my photography may not be a sequential story, but has been an emotional and personal
one. My experience with photography has been from both, the side of the viewfinder and the lens.
Being the photographer, you get to see items from different angles and perspective and that's
something I always try to practice. As a busy college student who juggles many tasks at once, I find
it important to always take time to enjoy fresh air and look at the nature around me. When enjoying
nature, taking a closer look at the flowers, trees, rivers etc. have always peaked an interest to me.
With my photography, I noticed that I'm drawn to landscape photography because I try to capture
that delicate, colorful, and peaceful view. The purpose of these

Newspaper Articles : Causes And Consequences Of A...
In many publications, many newspaper articles tend to provide visuals of the topic at hand. These
visuals can sometimes impact the tone and perspective the reader interprets throughout the Article.
In "Shaken Photojournalism Industry Questions Itself After Souvid Datta Scandal" and "The Real–
ity of a Fake Image: News Norms, Photojournalistic Craft, and Brian Walski's Fabricated Photo–
graph'" it shows the effects that photo manipulation has on photojournalism culture. In both cases
with Walski and Datta, both photographers caused heavy dilemmas with journalists using photo
editing tools, manipulation, and poor ethical reasoning when submitting these photographs. Photo–
journalists can use better judgment when it comes to altering a photo to a certain degree because it is
be misleading in many cases. This causes a lot of controversy among journalists since there is a very
thin line on what is ethically right or wrong to publish. Throughout both articles, the authors use
great standpoints to clarify the issue in doing so. In "Shaken Photojournalism Industry Questions
Itself After Souvid Datta Scandal" Laurent starts off by directly stating that Souvid Datta had
already been in many conflicts. He had been in–volved in many allegations of incorporating two
separate photos and merging them together to form a more dramatic interpretation of the visual. In
this particular case, he traveled to Kolkata In–dia to take photos on sex trafficking. While he was in

Essay on Changing Photojournalism Education in American...
Changing Photojournalism Education in American Universities
Kenneth Kenney stated the obvious in 1987– "The lack of trained teachers and educators and
standard teaching materials is the most pressing problem in photojournalism education" (Kenney
1987). The same rings true today– professors in the fields of journalism and photojournalism are
practicing the same things they were taught in college– many have been out of the workforce for
years, if they were working journalists or photojournalists at all. Today's professors were trained in
the beginning of the digital age or earlier, and practices and requirements for the future
photojournalists have changed, and are continuing to change daily. Without the proper re–education
of these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To ensure the proper training with equipment, the student must have access to the constantly–
changing and updating materials that photojournalists, photographers, and journalists regularly have
to evolve with.
Oblinger and Oblinger again address this– today's college students, the "Net–Gen", have grown up
with technology– they have the latest computer, software, programs, websites, phones, etc. Children
and youth today average more time spent on digital media than watching TV. Today's Net Gen also
expects up–to–date technology in their learning process, and expect their professors to have
knowledge of the technology similar to theirs (Oblinger and Oblinger, 2005).
Photojournalism today epitomizes the multimedia function– photojournalists are required to perform
multiple duties rather than just take pictures. Instead, they are both taking the pictures while also
writing the story, taking video, and uploading to social media. Despite the constant addition of
duties, staffers are expected to perform them all in less time than they were previously expected to
perform one duty. Education in video, audio, photography, writing, and social media is imperative
for the future photojournalist, and with skills in all of these sets, a photojournalist will be more of an
asset to the employer than one who has only one or two of these skill sets. Specialized focuses in
photojournalism education should also be

Civil War Images
As the well–known Chinese proverb goes, "one picture is worth 10,000 words." This saying means
that one can tell a story or convey information without ever using words: an image can be more
valuable and explain a situation more clearly, and with more emotion, than words, which can often
be misunderstood (Martin). This practice is common today, and can be found even 150 years ago.
Images are often used to persuade audiences into a certain point of view and evoke powerful
reactions that change how someone views a situation. Matthew Brady understood the influence that
a picture can have, and he used his photography of the Civil War to transform how Americans
viewed war. Prior to the Civil War in 1861, paintings depicted the images of ... Show more content

Brady grew up in the mid–1800's in the state of New York, where he was tutored in the arts. Brady
enjoyed his lessons so much that he opened a studio for his paintings and miniature portraits. Brady
became very popular with the public, and when he started to gain fame in his career, he moved to
Washington D.C. where he married his wife, Juliette Handy. He opened The National Photographic
Art Gallery and published a book filled with photographs of famous Americans such as Henry Clay
and Andrew Jackson. At this time, Brady was also getting attention from the President of the United
States, Abraham Lincoln. In fact, it was Brady who took the now iconic picture of Lincoln that is on
the five–dollar bill still today ("Mathew Brady"). Brady was passionate about his career in
photography and wanted to take it to another level. As controversy over the Civil War arose, Brady
felt compelled to capture the war like no one had done before. Although people warned him of the
dangers and risks of going into the war zone with his photography equipment Brady was determined
to make it happen. After securing permission, he said his most famous words: "I can only describe
the destiny that overruled me by saying...I had to go. A spirit in my feet said, 'Go,' and I went,"
(Murray 59). This quote helps to illustrate his conviction and his willingness to go wherever

Jacob Maentz: A Documentary Analysis
Documentary photography is redefined as a form of photography that is used to capture every
moment as it happens in order to express a message of what is occurring around the world
("Documentary Photography," n.d.). Photographers who focus on documenting capture photographs
that attracts public attention and tells stories of situations that happen in our daily lives
("Documentary Photography," n.d.). I have always found interesting documentary photographers
because they are able to tell a story with a click of a button. Of course it is more than just pressing
the shutter button, it's about being able to use light, the limitation of space, location, and
composition to capture the most possible in order to express emotion and capture a visual ... Show

The technique Maentz uses is to get close to his subjects and interact with them as he believes that it
is important to build relationships and recognize how to interact with different types of people.
(Rojee, 2012). An example of Maentz technique is used in a portrait of Lakay Lausan a Tinguian
man (fig 1). I personally liked this photograph because of the use of lighting and composition that
expresses so much emotion. In his website, Maentz writes that the story behind this photograph
comes from the trip that he took to the Cordilleras of Luzon in the Philippines. Maentz spent three
weeks trying to experience, understand, and capture the culture of the Igorot people and after the
weeks were over he still believed that there was still a lot more to be captured (Maentz, 2013).
Maentz writes about his experience with the Igorots people and informs the audience about the
society being "self–contained" and always going through issues due to "ancestral domain" (Maentz,
2013). Although the information on the people is very essential, the photograph of Lakay Lausan
expresses a story that is unwritten. When you first look at this portrait your eyes are directly driven
to the face of Lausan which is covered with wrinkles. Usually older people with wrinkles are
seemed to have wisdom and knowledge and that is

Life of W. Eugene Smith Essay
William Eugene Smith was an American photographer who produced photographic projects that
changed how photographs were portrayed. Rather than a photo being a photo, he told stories through
his photographs, through a practice called photojournalism. His photographic projects depicted
people in their everyday lives, but in different situations. The photographs he took did not hide
anything that he saw from the audience no matter how graphic the scenery may appear to be. His
photography methods differed from traditional methods, in that traditional
photographs/photographic projects were a distortion of reality, so that it is more pleasing to the
audience. Smith on the other showed what was actually going on in the world or wherever he was ...

An example was five photographs he took of the Labor Day motorboat races, which described the
event in a narrative form (Hughes 12). In 1936, Smith graduated high school and attended Notre
Dame University, where a special photographic scholarship was awarded to him (Magnum Photos).
However, a year later, Smith left the university, and went to study at New York Institute of
Photography. In the same year, 1937, Gene was hired to work for Newsweek, where his first two
photo assignments were to photograph the Rockettes at Radio City Hall and the other project was to
photograph a medical operation. Many of the editors and other photographers at Newsweek were
impressed by Smith's photographs, and he secured a job at Newsweek. His newfound employment
fulfilled his goal of becoming a professional photojournalist. However, down the line he was to
change the way he took photographs, which he obliged to at first; Smith was to use a larger camera,
a tripod and the old fashioned open shutter technique whenever he needed flash (Hughes 49). He
later decided that the smaller camera he used was better to take photographs, following his instincts
Smith used his small camera rather than the larger one when taking his photographs, disregarding
the orders from the editors at Newsweek; this decision caused him to be fired from his job.
He then went job searching, and joined the Black Star Agency as a freelancer in 1938 (Magnum
Photos). Here at the agency, he

Literature Review On Participatory Photography
Literature Review on Participatory Photography
Introduction
Participatory Photography is among research tools using visual research methods for researchers and
other professionals, particularly those who are working on research for social work and community
development. In 1997, Carolin Wang and Mary Burris introduced a new methodology called
"Photovoice" which is later sometimes referred to as participatory photography. Since then
photovoice has become a popular approach in the field of participatory photography and it has been
applied in many projects worldwide, particularly those focusing on marginalized groups and the
socially excluded. A broad purpose of using photovoice is to get participants ' view and stories on
their own perspective by providing them cameras to record their realities according to any topic they
have been given. This literature review was conducted with the aim of understanding why
photovoice method is chosen for use in research, highlighting the effectiveness of the use of
participatory photography and the process of photovoice in addressing the quality of life of young
refugees, including some common concerns when doing the participatory project.
Background of Photovoice
Participatory photography was first introduced in 1992 when Dr. Caroline Wang and Dr. Mary
Burris did their community–based participatory research on the lives of rural women in Yunnan
Province, China. They provided women cameras in order to shed light on their difficulties in

The Different Types Of Photojournalism
Photojournalism is different from other types of photography since the photojournalist's job is to
document a real story throughout the photo with a high level of journalistic honesty. A documented
photograph is delivered to the public as a complement to the written article. Therefore the
photojournalist is not considered as an artist but as a reporter.
Photojournalism begun with drawings, cartoons and carvings that appeared occasionally in the 18th
Century press. When Benjamin Franklin was publishing the Pennsylvania Gazette in the 1750s, he
printed a carving of a snake chopped into little pieces and added the caption "Join, or die". That was
barely spot news, but at least it touched one of the main concerns of the time: the importance of
unity in the American colonies.
What was probably the first sample of a modern news picture appeared in the Illustrated London
News in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This concept was a combination of two old ideas which were the image and the text. Editors and
photographers started working together to produce an actual story told by words and pictures, both
at the same time. For a photojournalism magazine to be successful, the photographers would shoot a
large number of photos, much more than they needed, and they would transfer them to the editors.
The editors would then examine the sheets with all the images on them in a miniature form, and they
would finally choose those which they believed were the best at telling the story.
Just like the new photojournalism style, the layout and writings were important in the early
invention of the photojournalism magazine, but what was more important were the captions, as they
helped tell a story along with the images. Next to every image and its caption was a short and
straight to the point written story, and the one dominant theme–setting photo would be published
larger to help shed light on the theme and reinforce

Response By Martha Rosler Summary
ARTH345 Response Paper
Ruoyin Chen (ID: 44438159)
Nov. 13rd 2016
Section A: According to Martha Rosler (1989), documentary photography started in the early
twentieth century with Lewis Hine and Jacob Riis in United States. At that time, it acted as a visual
medium to reflect social conscience through liberal sentiment expression. In addition, Rosler
pointed out that a documentary photo has two paths. The images in the first "immediate" moment
captured to be testimony evidences to support or argue against social practice. The second
"aesthetic–historical" moment characterized as having less defined boundaries to evaluate a
photograph, which means the traditional subjective judgments of an image have fell below its well–
formedness and aesthetic pleasure it brings to the public. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Meanwhile, photography as a commodity in the industrial world at that time, its status in galleries
and museums is determined by the price it sells, which means the higher the price is, the higher
position it stands. This situation increases the gap between this photography and another type of
photography, which works simply for exposing abuses caused by jobs, races, sex, social classes and
etc. that people are unfamiliar to accept and consume. What's more, Rosler argued that photography
contains unfamiliar subculture elements like poverty and refugees would be excluded from the pop
elite culture because of their radicalness. However, when the shock of these images gradually
disappears, they eventually will be included inside. In conclusion, although there's gap between how
general society see, understand, accept and engage in documentary photography, Rosler believed
that it's better to find out a method that not only retain criticism about social culture but also run a
countering practice of photography.

Photojournalism
"Photojournalism provokes conversation and thought, which all good journalism should do. The
exhibition provides an excellent teaching opportunity, fostering discussion about we cover events of
our time and the needs of society, while talking about the profession and craft of journalism" –
Michael Parks To begin, photojournalism, along with many different forms of photography is used
as a story telling technique. Yet the art of photojournalism stands apart from other forms of
photography because of three key elements; Relevance, Objectivity and Narrative. A photograph
labeled under the genre of photojournalism must be powerful in communicating a story. The
photograph must hold the emotion and truth that is the event. Meaning the photography must speak
for itself and communicate to the viewer directly, as if there where no article to support that
photograph. The history is also just as important. The history of photojournalism is long and
fascinating. Since the camera was invented, photographers have been ... Show more content on

According to Frank Hoy, a photojournalism professor, the aim of the photojournalist is to make
viewers quickly understand a situation by communicating a clear message. This guarantees that
photojournalism should have a storytelling attribute. Storytelling is a way of conveying events in
words and images. In the context of photojournalism, storytelling means that by merely looking at a
news picture, readers can get a general sense of the contents of the news. Then readers will make a
quick judgment about whether to go into linguistic part of the news based on attractiveness level of
that picture. Curiosity may trigger us to dig more details about this news. This is how effect of
storytelling takes place. Nevertheless, there are some potential problems associated with storytelling

Documentary Photography Research Paper
The photography was considered as a documentary medium because of the replicas of the subject
when it appeared 150 years ago. The technologically advanced cameras and development of
photojournalism led to the development of realistic photos. Those photographs were considered a
witnesses of reality as they expose the facts of life (Mullen 6). Gradually, manipulation in
photography was looked upon to necessary to display the subject accurately. This was because the
event was not clear in photographs at times. Thus, the photographer was compelled at times to edit
those images.
Documentary photography is seen to belong to the realm of truth. It is seen that some photographers
test the boundaries between reality and fiction. Several of those documentary projects carry a mix of
fact w`ith fiction. As a documentary photographer, one feels a responsibility that as they are
shooting someone else's life and story, it should be told as it is without any tempering. There are
several documentary photographers who experiment with fiction to tell the true stories. After all, this
is the time when there is very little exposure in newspapers and magazines for the documentary
photographic industry. Moreover, funding is hard to come by, and it is no surprise to come across

Ethics Photojournalism
Photojournalism and digital imaging ethics
Photojournalism, present day finds itself standing at the proverbial crossroads. Will digital imaging
technologies and public cynicism lead to its downfall or will journalists rise to the challenge by
practicing a new more credible form of visual /photo journalism. Ethical blunders by such
journalistic icons as National Geographic and TIME have all contributed to visual journalism losing
credibility with the public. It was only a hundred years ago that people believed what saw in
photographs was true. On the other hand present day, the increasing response to an unusual
photograph is "They did that with PhotoShop." Where does this leave a medium whose mission is to

TIME by manipulating this image was not seeking to report the truth. TIME was making an editorial
statement and not reporting the news.
There are many degrees of changes that can be done electronically to a photograph. There are
technical changes that deal only with the aspect of photography that make the photos more readable,
such as a little dodging and burning, global color correction and contrast control. The Society of
Professional Journalist and its code of ethics clearly state "Image enhancement for technical clarity
is always permissible". These changes, akin to there darkroom counterpart, are neither ethical nor
unethical– they are merely technical. Most sentences necessitate some editing or reorganization to
make sense, and most photographs necessitate, in particular digital photographs, require some basic
toning and preparation to meet production standards. Dodging and burning is part of that process.
The techniques did not begin with the invention of Adobe PhotoShop, the now dominant software
program found on a desktop in most photojournalist. However PhotoShop did help the process
become a lot easier making manipulation seamless and in effect virtually undetectable. "One must
understand that there are several ways to do everything in PhotoShop. You can perform the dodge
and burn procedure by three of four different means." says Kevin Connor, Director of Project

looking at the aspect of documentary photography along with the artists I will be discussing because
I want to pursue a career for those candid moments just like I am fascinated with. I think it's
effective due to the simple fact without documentary photography or film, we would not know
solely about history and I think documentary work is a great contribute to humanity because without
those moments captured if your memory goes bad then you will not be able to relive those moments
you longed to reminiscence. This project I plan to be a part of is unique in its own right and I say
that because not everybody that documents a photo have envisioned it before taking it and that's the
difference between an artist and just someone that is a photographer. As far as new ideas, with

American photographers of the late 1950's and 60's reinvented the documentary tradition.
Photographers like Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, and lee Friedlander looked at the world through

the art of photojournalism has been altered. In order to understand the importance of
photojournalism, it is necessary to look at what photojournalism is and the history of it, the
responsibilities of photojournalists, the negatives of photojournalism, the impact photojournalism

Liz Masoner confirms this in her article, "An Introduction to Photojournalism" by saying,
"Photojournalism is not just 'taking news pictures.' Photojournalism doesn't mean you are employed
by a specific newspaper or working in a war zone. Photojournalism, but simply, is about capturing
verbs" (Masoner). With that, photojournalism isn't not always a career. Everyday people can be
photojournalists which can acquire these shots that tell a tale. Photojournalism is capturing a story in
one picture without words, while normal photography is a mix of actions and names in portions. A
very important piece of this is about showing the world a story of something that actually happened.
In the acknowledgement of photojournalism, supporting proof of witness is an expression that
comes to mind. Another key part of this is art is letting the world have a visual through your eyes for
just a moment. When it's done correctly, that one moment shows a volume of time (Masoner).
Photojournalism has been around for over 100 years, but it first began in 1853. When
photojournalism first began, it wasn't with cameras because they had not been invented yet. Towne
states that the very first photojournalist was Carol Szatmari who was a Romanian painter and
photographer that documented the Crimean War. The first journalistic pictures which were printed

column inches within which to develop their perception of the story fall into a different category all
together. A photojournalist must ascertain the defining image of a news event as it is happening and
capture it on film. If he or she is doing the job correctly, a reader can get a very good idea of what
happened without even reading the accompanying article. There is no luxury of editing in
photojournalism, the moment is either captured forever, or it isn't. If a fantastic shot is missed, it is
gone forever.
A good freelance photojournalist shoots what he or she knows. A good photojournalist also knows
what will sell. Some photographs really aren't worth taking from a newsworthiness standpoint, but if
a publication is willing to pay enough for them, than they will be taken. Sadly money does rule the
world, and until paparazzi photographers can feed their families without having to take these sorts of
pictures, they will continue to be taken.
It is obvious that one of two things is happening. Either the paparazzi does not threaten privacy and
First Amendment rights, or they do in such a way that the public does not care. The reason for this
goes back to the rich publications that ultimately drive paparazzi photographers to take these
pictures. These

20th Century Photography
The 20th Century was one of the bloodiest times in human history. It was a time of war, with death
tolls from politically motivated conflicts between 175 and 200 million worldwide. Over the course
of the century, the nature of war blurred and then wrecked older distinctions between battlefield and
city, soldier and civilian, peacetime and wartime. In this essay I will talk about how the role of the
20th century evolved and of how technologies and techniques helped in defining photography. I will
also talk about the impacted of Robert Capa.
Photography was beginning to be used as a visual language. It held no barriers like languages to tell
its story of what was happening in the world. Photographers used its growing influence to expose

Capa's career as a journalist had him witnessing five different wars. The Spanish Civil War, the
second Sino Japanese war, World War 2. He manages to capture amazing and powerful photographs
that gave people chills. In this essay I'm going to compare two of his photographs from each of the
wars to show not only how he capture the bloodshed of war, but also the people who are living

capturing sudden death. It also became the style to define the work of Capa and his colleagues at the
picture press agency Magnum Photos in the late 1940's.

History of Photojournalism
"I have been a witness, and these pictures are my testimony. The events I have recorded should not
be forgotten and must not be repeated" (Nachtwey). Photojournalism is the art or practice of
communicating news by photographs, especially in magazines. Photojournalism has evolved
immensely from the beginning to the present. Photojournalism developed during the Crimean War,
submitted to its evolution throughout the course of the Golden Age, and eventually settled on its
present–day existence today.
Photojournalism was started during the Crimean war by a gentleman named Carol Szathmari.
Szathmari was born on January 11th, 1812 as a noble descent. He first studied as a painter but then
became a very enthusiastic traveler. He then began to experiment with photography in 1848, soon
after he filled a wagon with his supplies and followed the war, capturing many battles and important
moments. Roger Fenton was also photojournalist who took pictures of the Crimean War. His
mission was to capture evidence that contradicted the description of William Russell, a war
correspondent. Russell was condemning the military's failure to provide sanitary living conditions
for the soldiers. Roger Fenton faced many challenges while photographing the war for four months.
Having to develop all of his photos on wet–collodion plates with unclean water proved very
demanding. Despite all of his challenges he was able to be very successful and came back to London
with 360 snapshots of the war

Photojournalism and the New Visual Storyteller Essay
Photojournalism and the New Visual Storyteller
Storytelling has always been a part of culture; from Native American cave paintings, to the first
edition of the bible that Gutenberg pulled off his printing press, people have used the technology to
their advantage. It allows man new ways to get ideas across. We also live in a visual culture; from
the stained glass windows that depict biblical scenes, to the millions of billboards that line highways
across America, we have always used pictures to express ideas. In 1937 Henry Luce started a
magazine that utilized the technology of modern printing presses. He hired photographers who used
small 35mm cameras, and so began Life magazine. It advanced a profession called photojournalism,

"We are trying to look for a way to create leverage to make our storytelling appeal to an ever–

higher place to stand so that we can exert that leverage."
The Platypus is the icon for a new breed of visual journalists; they gather video, stills, and audio.
They are in control of their story all the way. The Platypus is someone who knows how to use the
Internet as a marketplace for his work and will be the one to survive the digital revolution. The
Platypus doesn't make a distinction between still and video, he uses the right medium at the right
time.
You might be asking, Why would a still photographer shoot video? There is almost no direct
connection because a still photographer goes for the moment, that split second where the action is
peak, when a man who is jumping across a puddle is just about to hit the water. The video shooter
looks for the moment, and everything before and after it. One morning while Dirck Halstead was in
bed, the New York Times called. They wanted him on a plane to Bancock, they had an exclusive
with Pol Pot, who was the head of the Khmer Rouge that took control of Cambodia in 1975 and was
responsible for the genocide of more than a million people. Only one photographer and one reporter
were allowed to go, and the New York Times wanted video also. The

Tony Ray-Jones: Documentary Photography
There is not a term or word that can be used to define documentary photography. It can be 'described
as a form, a genre, a tradition, a style, a movement and a practice' (Wells, 2009, p. 69). Documentary
photography separates itself from photojournalism as it does not specifically cover breaking news or
events, it is intended to draw attention to real–life situations, for example, focusing on a certain
group of people or certain locations. The aim of documentary photography is to expose society
naturally; it acts as a visual language. A photographer who does this in their work is Tony Ray–

reasons why Tony Ray–Jones chose to photograph him. He wanted to capture scenes that were

Photojournalism Controversy
Photographic journalism has raised ethical questions for as long as it has been around. In it's
essence, photojournalism serves to enhance written and verbal journalism by giving readers and
viewers a visual, tangible link to a story. One huge problem that photos can raise is the context
they're used in. For instance, a photo could affect it's audience in complete different ways if it is on
the front cover of a magazine or if it's on an inside page. In 2012, the New York Post published an
issue with an image on the front cover that caused a lot of debate. It was a picture of a man that had
been pushed off a subway platform and a train heading straight for him. Perhaps one of the most
controversial things about this photo was it's headline: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A photos context must be put under scrutiny as well. Context is all the information about a photo
that you couldn't necessarily gather by just looking at the photo itself such as an attached headline,
where a photo is published, who published it, who took the photo, and many other things. This is
where the ethics can get tricky to judge. When looking at the subway photo that the New York Post
published the context is where all the conflict truly lies. Probably one of the first questions that a
viewer thinks of when looking at the photo is, "who took it?" With photos like these, ones taken in
moments of life or death, can be hard to defend ethically. The photographer, Umar Abbasi, tells his
story by saying that he only captured the photos as a coincidence. He says that he had his camera on
him and, after seeing the man falling, began snapping photo to alert the driver of the train with his
flash (Collins). Another large context point to look in on is the headline that the New York Post
used: "doomed" in all caps and "pushed on the subway track, this man is about to die." Putting aside
the insensitivity the headline implies, it seems meant to grab attention. Instead of saying something
like "pushed to his death," they use "this man is about to die" leaving viewers wondering what
happened after the photo was taken. Did someone help the man, did he get out of the way, did the
train stop? This alone points to some suspect hedonistic actions taken by the New York Post. If you
saw a paper with a cover like that you are more likely to stop and buy it then to pass it by. By using
the headline that the New York Post did, they really sensationalized the story of the man's death.
Subsequently, the focus of all the media became the picture itself being published instead of the
story the picture was accompanying. When looking at Lester's ethical concerns, it is easy to see

The Ethics And Morals Of Photographing The Suffering Of...
Introduction to Photojournalism
Ever since photojournalism emerged in the early 20th century as a genre of photography, there has
been criticism surrounding the ethics and morals of photographing the suffering of others. So–called
"documentary photography" has sparked questioning of the responsibility of a witness of suffering
in creating positive change. Critics continue to label certain works of photojournalists as
exploitation of impoverished people, while the photojournalists themselves argue that the purpose of
their photography is to spark attention, awareness, and change. The ethics of displaying photographs
of suffering in the media or in exhibition lies in what these images are being used for. A very direct
investigation into this idea is through the photography of Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado.
Salgado, who considers himself a "social photographer," has been highly acclaimed for his work– as
well as criticized. He has created several extraordinary projects throughout his career, several of
them documenting the suffering of extremely poor and distressed people. His projects "Sahel: the
End of the Road," "Workers," "Exodus," and "Migrations" are filled with shocking photographs of
humans in the most impoverished regions of the world. His photographs of people on the verge of
death contain an intimacy and sheer reality that is impossible to find in photographs displayed in the
news and social media. This individualism in each subject that Salgado

the usage of pictures to act as an article. Photojournalism has the capabilities of telling stories just

They don't overpower the subjects themselves, but instead direct the viewer to a different type of

Doretha Lange's more in depth pieces of art shows that art and documents are not equally exclusive,
but that they can combine to produce beautiful, moving, and campaigning images (The Art Story).
Doretha Lange's use of state–of–the–art practices also proves that modern art needs not only pieces
of private feelings of the artist, but also to be put in the services of popular photojournalism.
One of Doretha Lange's most well known photographs is The White Angel Breadline, which was
captured in 1933. The image of is of an elderly man waiting for food at the soup kitchen symbolizes
the depressed mood of the Great Depression. The camera focuses on the man's hat and face, which
show texture through comparison of the rough material and wrinkles of the hat, as well as his
weathered skin; her unconventional use of the fence in the foreground to lend dynamism to the
scene is also characteristic of use of modernist techniques (The Art Story). Doretha Lange often
cites this specific scene when she is speaking about her breakthrough into photojournalism. Doretha

understand. Photojournalism is all around us. Forms of photojournalism can be traced as far back as
Ben Franklin s, PennsylvaniaGazette . Although not photojournalism in the true since of the word,
the woodcut of snakechopped into pieces effectively conveyed the message of the caption, Join or
die. The firstexample of picture used to help a story, comes from The Illustrated London News.
Thepicture, a drawing, was of an assassination attempt on Queen Victoria on May 30, 1942. Theidea
of pictures in the news was not widely accepted. Some felt that using pictures detractedfrom the
important things , reading and writing. Among other problems that photojournalism faced were
those of getting the picture ontothe printed page.

My Photography Ethnography: Capturing Emotions Through Landscape Shots

  • 1. My Photography Ethnography The story in my photography may not be a sequential story, but has been an emotional and personal one. My experience with photography has been from both, the side of the viewfinder and the lens. Being the photographer, you get to see items from different angles and perspective and that's something I always try to practice. As a busy college student who juggles many tasks at once, I find it important to always take time to enjoy fresh air and look at the nature around me. When enjoying nature, taking a closer look at the flowers, trees, rivers etc. have always peaked an interest to me. With my photography, I noticed that I'm drawn to landscape photography because I try to capture that delicate, colorful, and peaceful view. The purpose of these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Newspaper Articles : Causes And Consequences Of A... In many publications, many newspaper articles tend to provide visuals of the topic at hand. These visuals can sometimes impact the tone and perspective the reader interprets throughout the Article. In "Shaken Photojournalism Industry Questions Itself After Souvid Datta Scandal" and "The Real– ity of a Fake Image: News Norms, Photojournalistic Craft, and Brian Walski's Fabricated Photo– graph'" it shows the effects that photo manipulation has on photojournalism culture. In both cases with Walski and Datta, both photographers caused heavy dilemmas with journalists using photo editing tools, manipulation, and poor ethical reasoning when submitting these photographs. Photo– journalists can use better judgment when it comes to altering a photo to a certain degree because it is be misleading in many cases. This causes a lot of controversy among journalists since there is a very thin line on what is ethically right or wrong to publish. Throughout both articles, the authors use great standpoints to clarify the issue in doing so. In "Shaken Photojournalism Industry Questions Itself After Souvid Datta Scandal" Laurent starts off by directly stating that Souvid Datta had already been in many conflicts. He had been in–volved in many allegations of incorporating two separate photos and merging them together to form a more dramatic interpretation of the visual. In this particular case, he traveled to Kolkata In–dia to take photos on sex trafficking. While he was in India, he encountered a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Essay on Changing Photojournalism Education in American... Changing Photojournalism Education in American Universities Kenneth Kenney stated the obvious in 1987– "The lack of trained teachers and educators and standard teaching materials is the most pressing problem in photojournalism education" (Kenney 1987). The same rings true today– professors in the fields of journalism and photojournalism are practicing the same things they were taught in college– many have been out of the workforce for years, if they were working journalists or photojournalists at all. Today's professors were trained in the beginning of the digital age or earlier, and practices and requirements for the future photojournalists have changed, and are continuing to change daily. Without the proper re–education of these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To ensure the proper training with equipment, the student must have access to the constantly– changing and updating materials that photojournalists, photographers, and journalists regularly have to evolve with. Oblinger and Oblinger again address this– today's college students, the "Net–Gen", have grown up with technology– they have the latest computer, software, programs, websites, phones, etc. Children and youth today average more time spent on digital media than watching TV. Today's Net Gen also expects up–to–date technology in their learning process, and expect their professors to have knowledge of the technology similar to theirs (Oblinger and Oblinger, 2005). Photojournalism today epitomizes the multimedia function– photojournalists are required to perform multiple duties rather than just take pictures. Instead, they are both taking the pictures while also writing the story, taking video, and uploading to social media. Despite the constant addition of duties, staffers are expected to perform them all in less time than they were previously expected to perform one duty. Education in video, audio, photography, writing, and social media is imperative for the future photojournalist, and with skills in all of these sets, a photojournalist will be more of an asset to the employer than one who has only one or two of these skill sets. Specialized focuses in photojournalism education should also be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Civil War Images As the well–known Chinese proverb goes, "one picture is worth 10,000 words." This saying means that one can tell a story or convey information without ever using words: an image can be more valuable and explain a situation more clearly, and with more emotion, than words, which can often be misunderstood (Martin). This practice is common today, and can be found even 150 years ago. Images are often used to persuade audiences into a certain point of view and evoke powerful reactions that change how someone views a situation. Matthew Brady understood the influence that a picture can have, and he used his photography of the Civil War to transform how Americans viewed war. Prior to the Civil War in 1861, paintings depicted the images of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Brady grew up in the mid–1800's in the state of New York, where he was tutored in the arts. Brady enjoyed his lessons so much that he opened a studio for his paintings and miniature portraits. Brady became very popular with the public, and when he started to gain fame in his career, he moved to Washington D.C. where he married his wife, Juliette Handy. He opened The National Photographic Art Gallery and published a book filled with photographs of famous Americans such as Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson. At this time, Brady was also getting attention from the President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. In fact, it was Brady who took the now iconic picture of Lincoln that is on the five–dollar bill still today ("Mathew Brady"). Brady was passionate about his career in photography and wanted to take it to another level. As controversy over the Civil War arose, Brady felt compelled to capture the war like no one had done before. Although people warned him of the dangers and risks of going into the war zone with his photography equipment Brady was determined to make it happen. After securing permission, he said his most famous words: "I can only describe the destiny that overruled me by saying...I had to go. A spirit in my feet said, 'Go,' and I went," (Murray 59). • 9. Jacob Maentz: A Documentary Analysis Documentary photography is redefined as a form of photography that is used to capture every moment as it happens in order to express a message of what is occurring around the world ("Documentary Photography," n.d.). Photographers who focus on documenting capture photographs that attracts public attention and tells stories of situations that happen in our daily lives ("Documentary Photography," n.d.). I have always found interesting documentary photographers because they are able to tell a story with a click of a button. Of course it is more than just pressing the shutter button, it's about being able to use light, the limitation of space, location, and composition to capture the most possible in order to express emotion and capture a visual ... The technique Maentz uses is to get close to his subjects and interact with them as he believes that it is important to build relationships and recognize how to interact with different types of people. (Rojee, 2012). An example of Maentz technique is used in a portrait of Lakay Lausan a Tinguian man (fig 1). I personally liked this photograph because of the use of lighting and composition that expresses so much emotion. In his website, Maentz writes that the story behind this photograph comes from the trip that he took to the Cordilleras of Luzon in the Philippines. Maentz spent three weeks trying to experience, understand, and capture the culture of the Igorot people and after the weeks were over he still believed that there was still a lot more to be captured (Maentz, 2013). Maentz writes about his experience with the Igorots people and informs the audience about the society being "self–contained" and always going through issues due to "ancestral domain" (Maentz, 2013). Although the information on the people is very essential, the photograph of Lakay Lausan expresses a story that is unwritten. When you first look at this portrait your eyes are directly driven to the face of Lausan which is covered with wrinkles. • 11. Life of W. Eugene Smith Essay William Eugene Smith was an American photographer who produced photographic projects that changed how photographs were portrayed. Rather than a photo being a photo, he told stories through his photographs, through a practice called photojournalism. His photographic projects depicted people in their everyday lives, but in different situations. The photographs he took did not hide anything that he saw from the audience no matter how graphic the scenery may appear to be. His photography methods differed from traditional methods, in that traditional photographs/photographic projects were a distortion of reality, so that it is more pleasing to the audience. An example was five photographs he took of the Labor Day motorboat races, which described the event in a narrative form (Hughes 12). In 1936, Smith graduated high school and attended Notre Dame University, where a special photographic scholarship was awarded to him (Magnum Photos). However, a year later, Smith left the university, and went to study at New York Institute of Photography. In the same year, 1937, Gene was hired to work for Newsweek, where his first two photo assignments were to photograph the Rockettes at Radio City Hall and the other project was to photograph a medical operation. Many of the editors and other photographers at Newsweek were impressed by Smith's photographs, and he secured a job at Newsweek. His newfound employment fulfilled his goal of becoming a professional photojournalist. However, down the line he was to change the way he took photographs, which he obliged to at first; Smith was to use a larger camera, a tripod and the old fashioned open shutter technique whenever he needed flash (Hughes 49). He later decided that the smaller camera he used was better to take photographs, following his instincts Smith used his small camera rather than the larger one when taking his photographs, disregarding the orders from the editors at Newsweek; this decision caused him to be fired from his job. He then went job searching, and joined the Black Star Agency as a freelancer in 1938 (Magnum Photos). Here at the agency, he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Literature Review On Participatory Photography Literature Review on Participatory Photography Introduction Participatory Photography is among research tools using visual research methods for researchers and other professionals, particularly those who are working on research for social work and community development. In 1997, Carolin Wang and Mary Burris introduced a new methodology called "Photovoice" which is later sometimes referred to as participatory photography. Since then photovoice has become a popular approach in the field of participatory photography and it has been applied in many projects worldwide, particularly those focusing on marginalized groups and the socially excluded. A broad purpose of using photovoice is to get participants ' view and stories on their own perspective by providing them cameras to record their realities according to any topic they have been given. This literature review was conducted with the aim of understanding why photovoice method is chosen for use in research, highlighting the effectiveness of the use of participatory photography and the process of photovoice in addressing the quality of life of young refugees, including some common concerns when doing the participatory project. Background of Photovoice Participatory photography was first introduced in 1992 when Dr. Caroline Wang and Dr. Mary Burris did their community–based participatory research on the lives of rural women in Yunnan Province, China. • 17. The Different Types Of Photojournalism Photojournalism is different from other types of photography since the photojournalist's job is to document a real story throughout the photo with a high level of journalistic honesty. A documented photograph is delivered to the public as a complement to the written article. Therefore the photojournalist is not considered as an artist but as a reporter. Photojournalism begun with drawings, cartoons and carvings that appeared occasionally in the 18th Century press. When Benjamin Franklin was publishing the Pennsylvania Gazette in the 1750s, he printed a carving of a snake chopped into little pieces and added the caption "Join, or die". That was barely spot news, but at least it touched one of the main concerns of the time: the importance of unity in the American colonies. What was probably the first sample of a modern news picture appeared in the Illustrated London News in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This concept was a combination of two old ideas which were the image and the text. Editors and photographers started working together to produce an actual story told by words and pictures, both at the same time. For a photojournalism magazine to be successful, the photographers would shoot a large number of photos, much more than they needed, and they would transfer them to the editors. The editors would then examine the sheets with all the images on them in a miniature form, and they would finally choose those which they believed were the best at telling the story. Just like the new photojournalism style, the layout and writings were important in the early invention of the photojournalism magazine, but what was more important were the captions, as they helped tell a story along with the images. Next to every image and its caption was a short and straight to the point written story, and the one dominant theme–setting photo would be published larger to help shed light on the theme and reinforce ... • 19. Response By Martha Rosler Summary ARTH345 Response Paper Ruoyin Chen (ID: 44438159) Nov. 13rd 2016 Section A: According to Martha Rosler (1989), documentary photography started in the early twentieth century with Lewis Hine and Jacob Riis in United States. At that time, it acted as a visual medium to reflect social conscience through liberal sentiment expression. In addition, Rosler pointed out that a documentary photo has two paths. The images in the first "immediate" moment captured to be testimony evidences to support or argue against social practice. The second "aesthetic–historical" moment characterized as having less defined boundaries to evaluate a photograph, which means the traditional subjective judgments of an image have fell below its well– formedness and aesthetic pleasure it brings to the public. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Meanwhile, photography as a commodity in the industrial world at that time, its status in galleries and museums is determined by the price it sells, which means the higher the price is, the higher position it stands. This situation increases the gap between this photography and another type of photography, which works simply for exposing abuses caused by jobs, races, sex, social classes and etc. that people are unfamiliar to accept and consume. Yet the art of photojournalism stands apart from other forms of photography because of three key elements; Relevance, Objectivity and Narrative. A photograph labeled under the genre of photojournalism must be powerful in communicating a story. The photograph must hold the emotion and truth that is the event. • 23. Documentary Photography Research Paper The photography was considered as a documentary medium because of the replicas of the subject when it appeared 150 years ago. The technologically advanced cameras and development of photojournalism led to the development of realistic photos. Those photographs were considered a witnesses of reality as they expose the facts of life (Mullen 6). Gradually, manipulation in photography was looked upon to necessary to display the subject accurately. This was because the event was not clear in photographs at times. Thus, the photographer was compelled at times to edit those images. Documentary photography is seen to belong to the realm of truth. It is seen that some photographers test the boundaries between reality and fiction. Several of those documentary projects carry a mix of fact w`ith fiction. As a documentary photographer, one feels a responsibility that as they are shooting someone else's life and story, it should be told as it is without any tempering. There are several documentary photographers who experiment with fiction to tell the true stories. Will digital imaging technologies and public cynicism lead to its downfall or will journalists rise to the challenge by practicing a new more credible form of visual /photo journalism. Ethical blunders by such journalistic icons as National Geographic and TIME have all contributed to visual journalism losing credibility with the public. The Society of Professional Journalist and its code of ethics clearly state "Image enhancement for technical clarity is always permissible". Most sentences necessitate some editing or reorganization to make sense, and most photographs necessitate, in particular digital photographs, require some basic toning and preparation to meet production standards. Photojournalism is the art or practice of communicating news by photographs, especially in magazines. Photojournalism has evolved immensely from the beginning to the present. Photojournalism developed during the Crimean War, submitted to its evolution throughout the course of the Golden Age, and eventually settled on its present–day existence today. He begged the government to intervene through lettering writing campaigns, a documentary, and a media expedition of the Bainmang Nature Reserve. The Chinese government relented and banned illegal logging. "This was the first time that nongovernmental organizations and enthusiasts of environmental protection, with the aid of the media, influenced the decision making of the government. These efforts also convinced the government to ban the cutting of natural forests, exerting a far–reaching influence on the protection of the ecological system on the middle and upper reaches of the Changjiang River and the development of the nongovernmental movement of environmental protection in China" (Fang, 2002). In the years that followed, Xi established Wild China Film, the first and only wildlife film and photography agency, at that time in China. In addition, Xi launched China's ... The role of the news–making photographer in Gardner's era was to document the history that was in the making, documenting the battlefield and anyone that would be considered a pioneer of the news. They also had a role to make large photographic prints. Today, photojournalist's play the role of being a visual story teller. They have to photograph, edit and present the images they shot to tell a story that no one else can tell. They have to be knowledgeable about the trade and have to be able to use all the tools provided really well. They are people who have disabilities and struggle from day to day whereas Gardner's images showed people dying and being hung as well as handcuffed waiting to die. The first image that I chose by William Albert Allard is called Untouchable midwife with discarded baby, Bihar, 2002. I chose this image because it's similar as to the one that shows the prisoners being hung as it represents the death. The second picture I chose called Laxman Singh, Rajasthan, 2002 I felt that this man is a prisoner in his own world because he has no legs to walk but prosthetics. I believe that the photographic approach of contemporary photojournalists have changed with both the idea and the technique since Gardner's era. There is more history going on every day and there are so many stories that can be told that each photojournalist can use different techniques and ideas to tell that story to a viewer. There are many things that can affect and benefit the photojournalists. The internet has made things easily accessible when it comes to things like photographs and information, whereas the old days you'd have to find out from the newspapers. We have the option to record such things and post for people to see. Whether it be from the TV, internet or newspaper it gets the point across and we are able to see it. • 61. Photojournalism Controversy Photographic journalism has raised ethical questions for as long as it has been around. In it's essence, photojournalism serves to enhance written and verbal journalism by giving readers and viewers a visual, tangible link to a story. One huge problem that photos can raise is the context they're used in. For instance, a photo could affect it's audience in complete different ways if it is on the front cover of a magazine or if it's on an inside page. In 2012, the New York Post published an issue with an image on the front cover that caused a lot of debate. It was a picture of a man that had been pushed off a subway platform and a train heading straight for him. Perhaps one of the most controversial things about this photo was it's headline: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A photos context must be put under scrutiny as well. Context is all the information about a photo that you couldn't necessarily gather by just looking at the photo itself such as an attached headline, where a photo is published, who published it, who took the photo, and many other things. This is where the ethics can get tricky to judge. When looking at the subway photo that the New York Post published the context is where all the conflict truly lies. Probably one of the first questions that a viewer thinks of when looking at the photo is, "who took it?" With photos like these, ones taken in moments of life or death, can be hard to defend ethically. The photographer, Umar Abbasi, tells his story by saying that he only captured the photos as a coincidence. He says that he had his camera on him and, after seeing the man falling, began snapping photo to alert the driver of the train with his flash (Collins). Another large context point to look in on is the headline that the New York Post used: "doomed" in all caps and "pushed on the subway track, this man is about to die." Putting aside the insensitivity the headline implies, it seems meant to grab attention. Instead of saying something like "pushed to his death," they use "this man is about to die" leaving viewers wondering what happened after the photo was taken. Did someone help the man, did he get out of the way, did the train stop? This alone points to some suspect hedonistic actions taken by the New York Post. If you saw a paper with a cover like that you are more likely to stop and buy it then to pass it by. By using the headline that the New York Post did, they really sensationalized the story of the man's death. Subsequently, the focus of all the media became the picture itself being published instead of the story the picture was accompanying. When looking at Lester's ethical concerns, it is easy to see where ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this article Sampsell's claim revolves around the American artist named Ben Shahn and how photography is equal to paintings on canvas. Shahn was a painter and a photographer and he was selected to be a part of an exhibition that featured both paintings and photography. Nowadays it is common for both mediums to the featured in exhibitions. So, it weird to think about how photography was looked down upon. For over a century there was an argument over wither photography was art or not. • 65. The Ethics And Morals Of Photographing The Suffering Of... Introduction to Photojournalism Ever since photojournalism emerged in the early 20th century as a genre of photography, there has been criticism surrounding the ethics and morals of photographing the suffering of others. So–called "documentary photography" has sparked questioning of the responsibility of a witness of suffering in creating positive change. Critics continue to label certain works of photojournalists as exploitation of impoverished people, while the photojournalists themselves argue that the purpose of their photography is to spark attention, awareness, and change. The ethics of displaying photographs of suffering in the media or in exhibition lies in what these images are being used for. A very direct investigation into this idea is through the photography of Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. Salgado, who considers himself a "social photographer," has been highly acclaimed for his work– as well as criticized. He has created several extraordinary projects throughout his career, several of them documenting the suffering of extremely poor and distressed people. His projects "Sahel: the End of the Road," "Workers," "Exodus," and "Migrations" are filled with shocking photographs of humans in the most impoverished regions of the world. His photographs of people on the verge of death contain an intimacy and sheer reality that is impossible to find in photographs displayed in the news and social media. This individualism in each subject that Salgado ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Doretha Lange's use of state–of–the–art practices also proves that modern art needs not only pieces of private feelings of the artist, but also to be put in the services of popular photojournalism. One of Doretha Lange's most well known photographs is The White Angel Breadline, which was captured in 1933. The image of is of an elderly man waiting for food at the soup kitchen symbolizes the depressed mood of the Great Depression. The camera focuses on the man's hat and face, which show texture through comparison of the rough material and wrinkles of the hat, as well as his weathered skin; her unconventional use of the fence in the foreground to lend dynamism to the scene is also characteristic of use of modernist techniques (The Art Story).
