Mobile communication has evolved through 5 generations (0G to 4G) with increasing data speeds and capabilities. 0G began in 1947 with analog mobile telephones that only supported voice calls. 1G started in 1978 and brought digital networks with improved voice quality. 2G launched in 1990 and enabled SMS and basic data. 3G arrived in 2003 with the ability to run mobile applications and stream multimedia. Currently, 4G provides speeds up to 100 Mbps and allows for high quality video streaming and IP telephony. Each generation has expanded the range of services available on mobile networks with a shift to all-IP networks on 4G.
