This document provides details about a music magazine concept created by James Marshall. The target audience is described as 15-25 year olds interested in rap/hip-hop music. An ideal reader, Jeffrey, is presented to exemplify the target demographic. The concept aims to fill a gap in the market for this audience. Visual elements like cover design, layout, and a featured model are meant to attract readers and represent the social group discussed in the content. While drawing inspiration from real magazines like NME, the concept also aims to develop some conventions and challenge others to create something unique. The document suggests distributing the magazine through a company like John Menzies that helped distribute NME magazines.

The music video for Lorde's "Team" is directed by Lorde and depicts a society of acne-faced teenagers ruled by Lorde in an abandoned building, with camera shots that create an eerie and mysterious atmosphere to represent Lorde's hometown in a way not typically shown in mainstream media. Scenes show a new member being initiated through a series of tests and interactions with other teenagers in the dystopian setting.

3. My main research was done one teenage fashion magazines. In all the others I decided to
choose seventeen and teen vogue. I wanted to create a mix of teenage fashion effect
with a little elegance just like vogue puts in their magazine – even though Teen vogue
is a teenage magazine but it still carries that elegance and grace in it which we
generally find in Vogue or Elle. So I wanted to mix these up and come with something
new. Seventeen as a magazine focus on you as a 17 or 18 year old and it covers all
the latest gossips gives advices on love, dating, issues teenagers have. Yes it does
revolves around clothes and fashion but not as such. Where as Teen vogue mainly is
a Fashion magazine and it generally talks about high end fashion. It tackles with
expensive designer clothes for teenagers. Yes to an extend it does involve new
music, actors etc. but not in depth or in a more realistic way as seventeen.
The elegance and the fashion point of view was taken by teen vogue but IBLING had an
effect of seventeen. My cover story is placed on the top right
side of the magazine. And it is all about a
young fashion designer so this way you
can see how I am relating it with Teen
vogue. Then again in another tag line
state “the fashion icon” it clearly tells tat
again we are talking about a person
related to “fashion. So here is where I put
in my inspiration from Teen Vogue.
4. IBLING
Seventeen
For some parts of my magazine I chose codes and
convections of seventeen as we can see how both have
similarities. Previously we talked about teen vogue being
totally about high class and expensive fashion and how
they don’t include other elements in the way seventeen
includes them such as hair styling, makeup- beauty and
health, gossip etc. in these convections I placed the pun on
the top of the magazine just like seventeen places it- in
these pun they generally talk about how you can win free
dresses makeup etc. to attract the audience or any pun like
that can grab their attention towards it.
Then in all seventeen magazines or even teen vogue we always see a
number in bold font on the left side of the magazine. So just like that I have
placed it in my magazine too which say “ 120 night life dresses”. 120 is
written in bold and bigger font to make so that when the reader looks at it the
first thing they think “120 what” and then they read “ night life dresses. Then
another convection I used was the “ free nail…” just like that in seventeen we
see they have free perfume to again attract the reader as who would not
So just like I said previously that seventeen deals
with all they other elements too where as teen
vogue doesn’t really. I used those other element in
my magazine too like I had a tag line which “says”
perfect hair styling tips” and “ with one easy
makeup trick”. These shows that I am not just
covering fashion I am also covering other parts of
the magazine too which includes beauty too.
I placed my barcode on the left
corner at the bottom of the
magazine and placed the price
right on the top of it. Seventeen
has its barcode right on the
similar corner.
5. MASTHEAD
When I started working on my masthead I wanted something very different and
more close to the work bling. I decided glittery fonts but then when I placed it on
the background, it didn’t fit in with the background so I decided to try bold colors
and yellow set itself perfectly in the greyish background. I looked up to fonts of
other magazines like Marie Claire, Elle, vogue, Fashion, harper bazar, Glamour etc
but they all had a similar kind of font and it was too elegant. I wanted something
girly but not too feminine. So I looked up to different fonts and then I came across
Cooper std it was very bubbly and showed more than something girl and elegant. It
represented fun. So here I wanted to break the stereotype that girl are suppose to
be elegant or anything that represents them has to be elegant.
Then for the layput I looked up at seventeen and they generally had the masthead
overlapping the image but they had a few issues in which the model was
overlapping the masthead. As my image was in a way that if the masthead
overlapped the model her face would have been covered so I decided to make the
model overlap the masthead.
7. IBLING
Seventeen
For my double spread page I took inspiration from seventeen as I wanted my double spread to be more like
seventeen so I came up with a very casual posture for the model although in this issue of seventeen the model
is not that casual though seventeen models are very casual. But as I wanted my magazine not just to represent
the elegance I want to break the stereotype that girls are supposed to be elegant and graceful so I decided to
make my model stand in a posture which represents her freedom from the stereotype, I wanted it to be fun and
casual so it could be real.
Then for the layout I wanted to look more like seventeen so I came across sample layout for the magazine but it
didn’t work out well. I wanted fonts which would tell the readers that the model is bold. So at first I did it exactly
the way it was in this sample but then I decided to do something new and which represent bold. So for the left
page I wrote the models name exactly in the similar way and for the colors I contrasted them with her clothes.
Then underneath it I had a completely different font “mistral” it represented the elegance and it even contrasted
with the other fonts. Then underneath that I had a description of the model and the article and for it I used a
very simple font.
For the right page I had the image and then at the edge I created a triangular shape and it overlapped the
image but we could see the image. And for the font I chose a bigger font and a bold one to represent how bold
and independent this model is. And the colors contrasted the background.
9. I wanted my content page to stay elegant just like teen vogue and I wanted it to be simple not
too jumbled up for the eyes. I wanted it to represent fashion, elegance and Girly obviously.
So I took the whole idea from teen vogue and as you may see my content page from teen
vogue. I placed FASHION on the left side but in a bigger font to make it more visible and to
point at the idea that is a fashion magazine. Then I used only one simple image and used
same font colors to contrast it with the image. And I even wrote IBLING on the top corner
and at the bottom but we cant see it completely and the same is done in Teen vogue too. I
have placed the content in a sequence to make it visible for the audience and to give a
clean sophisticated look.
10. HOW DOES IT REPRESENTS SOCIAL GROUP AND ISSUES?
On the front, around the globe, the stereotypical mindset concept of a Hijabi girl is taken far
away from fashion. It is considered that if a girl opts Hijab she can not get indulge in
fashion simultaneously. The girl chosen on the cover page has the passion to rage this
mindset. Even In this time period Muslims are seen as terrorists, they are not
encouraged the way other people are encouraged. There is a typical mind set that
Muslim girls don’t indulge into industries like fashion as it is seen as a something
“unacceptable”. Despite all this there are many hijabi Muslims women now a days
who are the style icons of many young girls. They come out of different backgrounds
and launch their brands and actually they make many sales. The work of these
designers are encouraged to another level ; they get to display their designs in events
like : London Fashion Bazar” where all the designers come up with there marvelous
work and sell it. In all of them I found my idol too Dina Tokio.
Dina Tokio, my inspiration aimed to discover more out of fashion including Hijab. She
started of from making youtube vlogs and tutorial videos and ended up launching her
very own clothing line “ Lazy Doll”. She worked on a mixture of street fashion and
modesty in it and gave it a very different new look. She had her ups and downs as
people criticized her for being a hijabi and commented on her way of carrying it. I
hereby want to carry the target as being the editor of the magazine and spread the
word which is now known as The Modesty movement. This movement is mostly
targeted to the women in the Muslim community who hesitate to opt a Hijab only
because they don’t want to get out dated to fashion. The aims of this magazine article
and the message we are conveying is that we all can look beautiful without showing
skin and it is to get as much out of the Hijabi fashion as this should get more girls to
12. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT ENGAGE WITH AUDIENCE?
My audience :
Typical teenage girl
Age 13- 19
Knows about famous brands
Is influenced by social media
Likes to read about designers
Keeps up to date with new trends
13. I worked on a very common social media networking site Facebook. I came up with a idea of
making an official page for IBLING just the way other magazines have and as Facebook is
used by almost a lot of teenagers it was one good way to communicate with the audience.
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ibling/1009381969090372?ref=ts&fref=ts
Then to know what the audience think of my magazine I came up with a survey on my blog for
all three pages and it ended up being a very good of engaging my product with the
audience.
http://a1meida.blogspot.com/2015/05/cover-page-survey.html
RESPONSE :
DOUBLE SPREAD PAGE
do you like the fonts used?
yes 9 69.2%
no 4 30.8%
Do you like the image?
yes 13 100%
no 0 0%
Do you like the layout?
yes 10 76.9%
no 3 23.1%
This response about the double
spread page tells us that I have
chosen the right fonts, image and
layout for the double spread
page.
14. CONTENT PAGE :
Do you find the content page attractive?
yes 12 85.7%
no 2 14.3%
Do you like the fonts?
yes 12 85.7%
no 2 14.3%
do you find the image attractive?
yes 14 100%
no 0 0%
This response shows that the audience is
quite happy with the layout and they do
find the page attractive enough to go
through it.
15. COVER PAGE :
Do you like the masthead 'IBLING"?
yes 37 84.1%
No 7 15.9%
Do you find the fonts attractive?
yes 37 84.1%
No 7 15.9%
Do you think the main image intriguing?
yes 39 88.6%
No 5 11.4%
Do you like the color scheme?
yes 39 88.6%
No 5 11.4%
This response is quite positive too
but after it I worked on a few things
to make it even better like the font
sizes, and the colors. I had a dull
yellow color for my mast head at
first then I changed it into a bright
yellow one.
16. Codes I used to attract my audience:
• I used a bold masthead and used a bright color which contrasted with
the magazine, it became eye catching which will attract potential
buyers.
• As the model is making a direct eye contact with the audience it shows
that the model is addressing directly to the audience which mean that
the magazine is engaging with the audience and this can persuade
them to purchase the magazine.
• I have used all such stories that would attract a typical teenage girl
who is into fashion like “look pretty at every party with one easy
makeup trick, free nail polish, meet the fashion icon Dina Tokio etc.
This way I cant attract the right audience for my magazine.
• I have positioned the stories in a way that it would draw their attention
to it directly. As “ look pretty at every party “is in bold an don the
bottom and would draw the audience attention and would make them
curious as they would want to know more.
17. HOW WOULD IT DISTRIBUTE AS REAL MEDIA TEXT?
When I was doing my research on media publications. I came across advance and hearst
magazine. These two are suitable for my magazine to distribute my media product.
Advance is the 44th biggest privately owned company in the world. They produce the most
successful magazines of todays in the market like Vogue and GQ. They are popular and
currently in high demand showcasing that they clearly know how to attract the audience. I
would like to get my magazine publish by them but as my magazine is similar to seventeen
and teen vogue, working in close proximity the main competitor would prove fatal to my
magazine’s success.
Hearst Corporation is one of the nation’s largest diversified media and information companies.
Its major interests include ownership of 15 daily and 34 weekly newspapers, including the
Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News and Albany
Times Union; hundreds of magazines around the world, including Good Housekeeping,
Cosmopolitan, ELLE and O, The Oprah Magazine; 29 television stations, which reach a
combined 18 percent of U.S. viewers; ownership in leading cable networks, including
Lifetime, A&E, HISTORY and ESPN; significant holdings in automotive, electronic and
medical/pharmaceutical business information companies; a majority stake in global ratings
agency Fitch Group; Internet and marketing services businesses; television production;
newspaper features distribution; and real estate.
As Hearst have been selling seventeen world wide since 1944.This would be an advantage for
me when marketing my product. They do sell women magazines like cosmopolitan , Elle
etc but they also do sell seventeen, a young teen magazine. And the magazine I have
created targets young fashion for young girls. So Hearst would be the most appropriate
one for my magazine.
18. HOW DID YOU PRODUCTION SKILLS DEVELOP
THROUGHOUT THIS PROJECT?
1. At first I used the
gradient tool to create
this background.
2. Then I typed
my masthead out
and filled it with
yellow color.
3. I cropped out my image
from the white background
using pen tool and then
placed it right on the
masthead and background I
created. I also zoomed my
image in as I did not need
19. 4. Then I created a
shape using shape
tool on the top and
placed the pun on
the top of it.
5. Then I created
another custom shape
so I could type
exclusive on it to give it
importance. And I
chose a matching font
for the name “ jumana
naqvee” and I placed
the name of the article
on the bottom of these
too. I also placed the
date in a 11 size font
right under the “G”
letter of the masthead.
6.I used the hue and saturation and brightness
tool so freshen up my image. Then I again used
the shape too to create another triangle. And I
placed the other tag line and contrasted their
colors with each other too.
20. 7. Final step where I placed the
barcode and the price. I
downloaded the barcode. I came
across a lot of troubles when
completing this though I learned
alot,.
21. CONTENT PAGE:
1. I used a plain white background and
placed the masthead instead of “content”.
I used black color for it and placed the
date right underneath the line shape I
created using line tool.
2. I placed my image right in the
middle. I used brightness tool to edit
it a bit. Then I used shape tool to
create lines and the small rectangle.
I wrote the page number inside the
rectangle. And I typed my tag line for
the image on the left side.
22. 3. Then I typed out the content and I
used kerning and leading tool so
adjust them. I used lien tool again too
create line to apart then and I placed
fashion on the left side.
4. Lastly I type I bling in the similar
color and font as the masthead and
placed it on the both sides top left and
bottom right but in a way that the
reader would know that its ibling
written although they wont be able to
the full masthead. I also tilted it.
23. Double spread page:
1. I used dodge tool to edit the
background as it was already bluish white
so this tool lighten the area. Then I placed
it on the right page and on the left page I
contrasted the colors of her clothes with
the font color.
2. Then I used curves, saturation and
brightness tool to edit the image.
3.Then I used shape tool to create
the shapes on the right and left side
of the page. And I typed out my main
tag line and quoted models words in
a bold font and contrasted it with
background. So one of my speech
mark is in the color of the triangle. I
multiplied the shape with the image
which gave out this effect.
24. HOW DID YOU INTEGRATE TECHNOLOGIES –
SOFTWARE, HARDWARE AND ONLINE IN THIS
PROJECT?
The main software used in the production of this magazine was Adobe Photoshop. This helped
me to put my work together. The raw material such as, photos, text and barcodes were
compiled together with the help of this software. Hardware was mainly the magazines I
went through which were Teen Vogue and Seventeen, as mentioned earlier. These helped
me design my ideas and try the stuff common in these magazines. The camera used in the
photography was Canon 5D Mark II. The photoshoot was carried out in a studio and these
produced a great number of relevant pictures which I could use in my work. On the other
hand, online social media gave me a chance to get the feedback on my work. I created a
page on a trending social networking site, Facebook. This gave me an overall judgement
of my work which was encouraging. To get more specific feedback I created media polls
using Google form. The survey gave me the feedback and I worked on the magazine
again to make it perfect for the targeted audience.
