Ontario Sex Education Curriculum Analysis
Being a parent is already hard enough, but adding social media into the equation, and suddenly
topics like: sexting, gender fluidity and anal sex are taking the foreground. In response to this
unregulated adult information, Service Ontario who made the Ontario Sex Education Curriculum
has decided to take necessary steps and include more similar topics into elementary schools.
All education has its own purpose, even sex education. According to Service Ontario, The revised
health and physical education curriculum is based on the vision that the knowledge and skills
students acquire in the program will benefit, throughout their lives and enable them to thrive in an
ever changing world by helping them ... lead healthy, active lives and promote healthy,... Show

The school leads the sex education and has the curriculum to first educate students. It is not only the
responsibility of the school or government; the parents also have responsibilities to teach their
children at home. According to A Parent s Guide, it says, Parents help their children form values
about relationships and behaviours and their sexual health. (Ontario, 2015) The schools, parents,
and communities are responsible for educations of children to feel involved in the changed and new
concept society has developed. Most parents tend to avoid this kind of communication with their
children. Parents are the most important role models to give the proper ideals on the issues. The
results and conclusions depend on the children, not the parents or communities. Parents should give
the right for the children to decide about the issues without forcing any specific opinions on them.
Society should give the opportunities to the children to face the challenges that come ahead, and
make decisions to solve problems based on the education they had in their childhood. With the
decisions, children or students can develop their ideas of the sexual issues and topics by
themselves. Through this stage, they are able to grow up further with

The Removal Of The Confederate Flag
I believe that the removal of the confederate flag is related to criminal justice because it may be
offensive to a lot of people. I feel that when certain individuals see the flag it may remind them of
hate , mistreatment , and slavery. According to an article, Hays board members, on a 5 2 vote,
amended the student code of conduct to ban the flag, which formerly was displayed with the
Hays High School Rebel mascot. The ban also covers any imagery deemed to be racially hostile,
offensive or intolerant. (First Amendment Center, 2012). As you can see there are going to be
several difference of opinions on this issue. I feel that we as country should do what is best to help
meet the safety of all individuals. In my opinion, removing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

(First Amendment Center, 2012). With an incident like that occurring the teacher could have gotten
upset and acted out on the students. The students could have done something worst the next time if
the school continued to fly the flag, such as physically attack the teacher.
One reason why I feel that the confederate flag should continue to fly is because of what it stands
for and means to diverse individuals. For example, I do not feel that all white people in the south are
racist. Owens stated, I was raised in this tradition. My forebears were Texans and Marylanders who
fought for the Confederacy. In our household, the battle flag symbolized the valor shown by
Southerners, most of whom did not own slaves, on countless battlefields. (M.Owens, 2000). I
believe the any race can be racist to any of group of people other than themselves.
Another reason why I feel that the confederate flag should continue to fly is because we live in a
country that stands for freedom. I mean we supposed to be free to speak out voice our opinions;
therefore, if individuals wanted to fly the confederate flag they should be free to do so. Once
again I feel that it goes back to people beliefs, morals, values, and religion. According to an article,
the federal government, in this biblical view, is largely unconstitutional. Thus, Moore and his
fellow travelers believe that federal courts cannot tell the states what to do, be it on

Great Expectations Manipulation Essay
Dickens Conveying of Receiving Great Expectations , in Great Expectations In the novel, Great
Expectations by Charles Dickens, the author conveys that the nature of coming into great
expectations and then expecting everything to be handed on a silver platter is rather negative,
through displaying how it makes people snobbish, brings them despair, and make them act
foolishly. The protagonist, Phillip Pip Pirrup, is a character who is a perfect demonstration of
someone who is negatively affected by their high expectations when they obtain lots of wealth. He
exhibits the consequences of receiving great expectationsand then presuming the world to be in one
s hands through his actions, thoughts, and reactions to the people around him. Although,... Show

With the money comes great dissatisfaction and discontent. Pip even admits that the new wealth
has not brought him the satisfaction he thought would come. When Magwitch finally reveals that
he is Pip s mysterious benefactor, Pip actually wishes that he had not made him a gentleman,
because it has brought Pip more trouble and sorrows than good. Pip says, O that he had never
come! That he had left me at the forge―far from contented, yet, by comparison, happy! (Dickens
322) Pip reveals that all the money he received from Magwitch has not done him a lot of good,
and he even confesses that the feeling of being forever poor and longing to be rich is far better
than the stress and problems caused by being abundant in fortune. Pip s disclosure of the harm of
receiving great wealth displays that the nature of great expectations is inimical and

A Journey Through India in the Book “Interpreter of...
Many of life s fantasies can resemble someone from our past or someone we care about. Every so
often, a reader may come across a story that feels as if the narrator is telling the story through his
or her own life experiences. The story Interpreter of Maladies is a convincing third person limited
omniscient narration by Jhumpa Lahiri, and it shows a diverse use of compelling characters and
symbols, which allow the readers to learn how narrators can use symbols to present their
emotions and characters to show their feeling. The story s three main characters are, a
designated tour guide Mr. Kapasi and Mr. and Mrs. Das, a traveling family. Lahiri emphasizes
many symbols such as Mr. Kapasi s address, a rice puff mix that Mrs. Das carries around, and she
also explains how each character has very different lives.
When the address of Mr. Kapasi flies out of Mrs. Das s bag into the sky, the author reveals Mr.
Kapasi s opinion of their relationship, it would be the beginning of a long term relationship and
maybe even a love interest. He also thought she would write him explaining her feeling to him, She
would write to him, asking about his days interpreting at the doctor s office, and he would respond
eloquently, choosing only the most entertaining anecdotes, ones that would make her laugh out
loud as she read them in her house in New Jersey (455). Mr. Kapasi dreams that Mrs. Das would

My Earliest Memory
My earliest memory is from the one day when my ordinary life had collapsed. Out of all of our
memory, majority of people would remember their most peaceful memory from their childhood.
I may have probably be one of them, if I did not experienced such a horrifying moment as a age
of four. I remember each part of the scene vividly and it is probably the memory that had a
strongest impact on me for the rest of my life.
My earliest memory was when I was four years old in my small apartment in Maryland. It was an
ordinary day until I saw my parents taken somewhere far away that I had no clue of.
The day started off normally, I woke up at my bed feeling the bright warm sunlight on my face. As

I spent my day peacefully in school learning new information and just talking with my friends.
After school, I was walking back to my home alone. I remember the neighbour family in the
morning, I picked up some dandelions from the roadside to show my family. I took it back
carefully as possible as I can back home so the white fluff on the dandelion wouldn t blow away.
When I finally arrived in front of my house, I saw my mother sitting in front of the entrance door
with her face down on to her knee. When she looked up and found me in front of her, her face
looked nothing like what I used to recognize her or what I would except a mother to look like in
front of her child. She looked terribly tired and frightened as if she was chased by a murderer.
Then, she demanded me to open the door grabbing my shoulders hardly. For a moment, I couldn
t move nor say anything. I was frightened of how she looked at me, I abandoned the option of
saying no to her and so I did what she asked. I knocked on the door as usually I would and
shouted at the door Dad, I m back home! . Then the door opened slowly, at a glance I saw some
pieces of glass and knife on the floor and my father with his face completely red. I was confused
of what was happening at the room. Then my mother broke into the house and slammed the door
hard. The door was closed again in front of

Lolita In Tehran
Freedom is anyone s opportunity to make decisions. Therefore, freedom should be demanded.
Nothing you ask for is just distributed to you. Freedom was not voluntarily given up to people.
You have to endeavor everything in life. You, yourself, may not have worked for freedom, but
someone did. Everything came about with a price, whether it was small or large. Freedom is
something that should be demanded because there is a struggle for everything you want in life.
You never get handed anything in life. There is a catch to everything, therefore nothing comes
without a price. Many people can ask for things but that does not mean they will receive what
was requested. Some may favor the outcome while others may not favor the outcome. Freedom

Australian statistics say that for every suicide completed there are 30 that have attempted. It is
good to know the warning signs of suicide for risk management and suicide prevention. When
people have suicidal thoughts you may hear them saying things like, life isn t worth living ,
everyone will be better without me , I cant deal with this anymore , I would be better dead or
nobody understands me ; if you hear people saying a few of the following you should definitely
look deeper into it. Suicideis the most serious symptom of server depression, warning signs of
depression/suicide would be sad moods, change in persons weight or appetite, loss of interest
the feeling of worthlessness, thoughts of death and self destructive behavior e.g. self
medicating. When coming across these symptoms it is best to ask clear and direct questions, it
may seem hard to bring the topic up; but it is best for the client to know that someone does care
and is noticing. Some conversation starters you can use are I have been feeling concerned about
you lately , I just wanted to see if everything is okay, you haven t been yourself lately when client
tells you how they feel you should go deeper by asking when they started feeling the way they do,
how can I support you. You must be supportive and let them know that they are not alone that we
are here and that they wont feel like that forever.

They have a unique business model that sets them apart from the rest which they call the three

This was influenced by Frederick Winslow Taylor s theory of scientific management which
began to develop in the 1880 s and was initially intended for factories. He believed that the best
way to go about production was by finding the easiest and most efficient, uniformed steps to
follow, and eliminating all other unnecessary steps in order to create the best way of completing a
task. The McDonald brothers took this theory and manifested into a restaurant. This single theory;
however, was not solely the key to McDonald s success. Ray Croc is often credited for how much
McDonalds has thrived because he was the first to develop its franchising system. But not even
McDonald s was the first restaurant to begin to venture out through franchising. So what
distinguished McDonalds from the rest? Croc utilized the techniques of the McDonald brothers
along with other principals of franchises, such as bureaucracies. This idea of bureaucracy was
inspired by Max Weber s ideals that bureaucracy is the most efficient form of organization for
everything from public administration, to government, down to individual businesses. It consist of
the principals which mainly stressed that an organization should follow a hierarchical principal

The audience can sense this with the direct tone in Chris speech to his father.
Miller very effectively uses contrast between the tension in a scene with the skillful use of light
hearted preludes or interludes. The contrast means the dramatic tension has increased. This is
usually done with characters like Frank or Sue. This helps the audience distinguish the tension
better. In this extract, Miller uses Keller s overriding affection and graduated self confidence at
the end of the extract to bring down the tension. Keller becomes very witty and cheerful: There s
gonna be a wedding, kid, like there never was scene! Champagne, tuxedos ! The tension is very
abruptly brought down, as it directly follows Chris and Keller s argument. The contrast in tension
creates a morbid curiosity in the audience, where they can no longer predict what is to come, which
makes the play even better. This increases the rate of anticipation.
The most obvious feature of drama is perhaps the dialogue. Miller uses the skill of using offensive
speech to bring about the tension. He deliberately causes conflict between two characters to
increase the tension. More over, Miller uses stage directions as a dramatic device to bring about the
tension in a scene. Keller makes a distracted entrance onto

Art From Baroque Period Through The Postmodern Era Essay
Art from Baroque Period through the Postmodern Era
Renaissance art history began as civic history; it was an expression of civic pride. The first such
history was Filippo Villani s De origine civitatis Florentiae et eiusdem famosis civibus, written
about 1381 82. Florentine artists revived an art that was almost dead, Villani asserts, just as Dante
had restored poetry after its decline in the Middle Ages. The revival was begun by Cimabue and
completed by Giotto, who equalled the ancient painters in fame and even surpassed them in skill
and talent. After Giotto came his followers, Stefano, Taddeo Gaddi, and Maso, uomini illustri all,
who, together with notable jurists, poets, musicians, theologians, physicians, orators, and others,

These texts are among the handful that treat art in the early Florentine Renaissance and are,
therefore, precious testimony from the early years of Renaissance art history. While rare for being
texts on art, they are of a type, however, that was common in Renaissance literature. They belong
to a genre or category in which are found some of the most characteristic texts of Renaissance
humanism. Other of the books in this category are by such writers as Bruni, Salutati, and Manetti,
books with which all students of the Renaissance are familiar. They treat broad moral and
philosophical issues, but, as in the accounts of visual art, only insofar as they concern the city of
Florence. And scholars reasonably have asked why there was such a preoccupation with Florence
at this time. One of those who did so was Hans Baron and his answer has been at the center of
discussions of this question since the 1950s.
Baron linked the focus on Florence during the years around 1400 to a struggle over Florentine
independence that began in 1390 with a declaration of war by Milan and ended only in 1454, when
Milan accepted the independent status of the Florentine Republic. These events, he proposed,
explain the direction taken by Florentine political speculation at this time, particularly the stress on
republican ideals of liberty and civic involvement; they gave rise to a

Isolation and Love Triangles The short stories After the Plague and Termination Dust by T.C.
Boyle share similar plot themes, but each story represents it in a different way. Each story is told
in first person by the main male character: Jed being the main character in After the Plague and
Ned in Termination Dust ; Both have one thing in common, loneliness. Jed is alone after the
plague killed off most of the population and Ned lives in a remote area in Alaska where female
companionship is certainly lacking. Each story has its own unique story line that is told with an

isolated setting and how the setting deeply affects the dynamics and intensity of the lovetriangles in
the story. Each story has a similar setting that causes the main characters to be more isolated

of the flu wrecking havoc around him. To help paint the picture of this new isolated world Boyle

The Character Analysis Of Guy Monttag, By Ray Bradbury
Life has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life. It is a waste to be asking the
question when you are the answer (Campbell). Guy Montag is very dedicated to his work as a
fireman, he fits the stereotypical role due to his physical appearance. His job is to burn and
destroy illegal books. The book is named after the temperature at which book papers ignite.
Montag is prideful of his work, he burns everything to the ground, devoid of thinking or feeling.
Montag is the protagonist, although there are countless others who could have taken his place
as the protagonist; there were also others who fought against society, nevertheless he was the
one fireman that went against his ideals and changed significantly due to meeting Clarisse,
Faber and the old woman, because he was searching for the meaning of his existence. After
meeting Clarisse, Montag begins to question society. Clarisse is very straightforward and clear
to Montag. He said that he can see himself in her eyes. How rarely did other people s faces take
of you and throw back to your own expression, your own innermost trembling thought?
(Bradbury 11). She makes him aware that he never stops to think. He tells Mildred that Clarisse
was the first person I can remember who looked straight at me as if I counted (Bradbury 72).

opposed to the joys of nature in which he rarely experiences. When Clarisse makes

2012 Penny Essay Conclusion
Summary: Each penny had individual measurements taken. The 1984 penny had more mass than
the 2012 penny, which was interesting to discover because the gold coloring added mass to the
penny. In addition, all of the pennies stayed relatively the same in terms of mass, the hundredths
place. The weight difference shows that the pennies mass changed during the changes. Finally, the
gold penny had the largest density. The silverpenny had the second largest density, and the copper
penny had the least largest density. The changes of the penny added density and mass each time.
With the information, it appears that the mass increased by .03 after each change.
Conclusion
The purpose of this lab was to transmute a simple penny from copper to silver to gold using
ordinary chemical and physical changes. To transmute a copper penny into silver and gold, two
trials were performed in order to transmute two of the pennies. The 1985 penny, which remained
copper, was unaffected. The 1984 and 2012 pennies were each turned into silver. Lastly, the 2012
penny was turned silver and then into gold using an extra change. Since the pennies showed a
transmutation, the purpose was proven to be accurate. Since the 1985 penny stayed the same,
measurements were taken immediately. The 1985 penny had a thickness of 0.28 centimeters. ...

Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman Essay
Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman
In the book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, the central thesis that he tries to point out is
that emotional intelligence may be more important than I.Q. in determining a person s well being
and success in life. At first I didn t know what Goleman was talking about when he said emotional
intelligence, but after reading the book I have to say that I agree completely with Goleman. One
reason for my acceptance of Goleman s theory is that academic intelligence has little to do with
emotional life. To me, emotions can be just as intelligent as your I.Q. In this essay I hope to
provide sufficient evidence to show why I agree with Goleman s thesis on emotional intelligence.

Goleman states, Emotional aptitude is a meta ability, determining how well we can use whatever
other skills we have, including raw intellect. People that have high emotional intelligence are more
likely to be satisfied and effective in their lives. Others who have trouble with this cannot manage
themselves so their ability for successful work and clear thought are altered.
In contrast to this, you can say that I.Q. is better than emotional intelligence. Having a high I.Q.
does offer a lot of benefits. Goleman states that people with a high I.Q. are ambitious, productive,
and uneasy with sexual and sensual experience. That high I.Q. people are the caricature of the
intellectual, adept in the realm of mind but inept in the personal world. And all of this is just for
the men. Goleman states, The profiles differ slightly for men and women. High I.Q. women have
intellectual confidence, are fluent in expressing their thoughts and have a wide range of intellectual
and aesthetic interests. Goleman also does point out that these are extremes and that everyone
mixes I.Q. and emotional intelligence in varying degrees. But this does give us an instructive look
at what each of these dimensions adds to a person s qualities.
In the book, Emotional Intelligence, Goleman talks about two psychologists (Sternberg and
Salovey) who have taken a wider view on intelligence and give terms of what they think it takes to
lead a successful life. They mention five

Effective Parenting For Effective Control Of Juvenile...
EFFECTIVE PARENTING FOR EFFECTIVE CONTROL OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY
*Xavier.M **Dr.R.Arjunan
Abstract
Juvenile delinquency is one of the burning issues all over the world and reform initiatives are going
on in many countries. In this study the four parenting styles namely Authoritarian, Authoritative,
Neglecting and Permissive parenting styles of the paternal and maternal care takers of the juvenile
delinquents were analysed to find its relation with the self control of the juvenile delinquents.
Census method was used in this study as the data had been collected from all the inmates of the
eight observation homes of Tamilnadu, India. The binary logistic regression revealed that paternal
parenting style predicted the prevalence of Fraud (property offences). On the other hand maternal
parenting styles predicted the prevalence of Force (personal offences). All the four parenting styles
of paternal and maternal care takers have a strong relation with the self control of the juvenile
delinquents which also indirectly predicts prevalence of the corresponding types of offence.
Therefore appropriate parenting by both the care takers is important to bring about control over
juvenile delinquency.
Key Words: Parenting styles, Self control and Juvenile delinquency.

Heart Of Darkness Critical Analysis
The Heart of Darkness, written by Joseph Conrad , is a very interesting and intriguing novel . It
was originally published in 1899 . A great deal of the criticisms focused on racial tension and
imperialism, which were very important topics that stuck out in reading the Heart of Darkness .
Many literary criticisms praise the novel and the entertainment it brings to the audience . Although
the Heart of Darkness receives a lot of praise, many critics negatively criticize the novel for various
reasons . Joseph Conradwas huge on attacking the topic of racism, which was a problem associated
with this novel during this time period . Shockingly, racism was mostly looked over by other
critics. This was due to how racism was interpreted and defined as in 1902 . The meaning of
racism has changed over time . During this time period, racism, the word itself, wasn t in existence
. However, that does not mean that racism didn t occur during that time . In fact , racial tensions
were so common that the actual word racism wasn t used because it wasn t necessary. Chinua
Achebewrites a strong critique explaining his opposing thoughts against the Heart of Darkness and
proving that point. Achebe believes that Joseph Conrad was in fact a racist, and he also believes
that a novel that depersonalizes the human race shouldn t even be in the running to be called a great
novel . He states that the simple truth should not be overlooked in other criticisms. Achebe explains

Analysis Of The Poem Not Coy Mistress By Andrew Marvell
Maira L. Herrera Sanchez Professor Emily N. Bartz English 203 9 February 2015 Sex Over
Time in Andrew Marvell s, To His Coy Mistress Sex and lust have changed greatly over time,
especially since the late 1600s. In the poem, To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell the
relationship between sex and time is rather passionate, but shifts as Marvell metaphorically
describes time. The horrifying tone put on the metaphors, allusions, and the hyperboles play an
important role in the understanding of Marvell s meaning on sex and lust of the speaker s lady
over time. The idea that each sex act shortened someone s life has come a long way. On the other
hand it is believed that the message Marvell was trying to address was how the cold lady
threatened the speakers love for her. Another idea is that the poem is based on death, and how
everything will one day die, rather than the passionate approach. I will prove how these 2 ideas
are wrong. In lines Marvell introduces the relation between time and the lady at fault, the speaker
wants to love her but it is difficult, Had we but world enough, and time, This Coyness, lady, were
no crime (Mays 739). Marvell shows how if they had time she would not be at fault, more
specifically their sexual acts, and lust for one another would be the opposite of sinful. Marvell
introduces the Ganges side in line 5 to begin to show that idea of motion and time. Then he
emphasizes the motion of time even further when Marvell uses the

Social Issues In Pride And Prejudice
Jane Austen s well known novel, Pride and Prejudice, discussed multiple social themes in the
19th century. Austen mainly criticized marriage during her era, when she says that, it is a truth
universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a
wife (Austen 3). As she explains that it was valuable to women since it provided them with
security and a social title. The author explored the diverse motives behind matrimony in her time
period by using a humorous and romantic plot to discuss the social issues. For instance, Charlotte
Lucas s unreasonable marriage to Mr. Collins is a vital example of how women needed to secure a
future and attain social status. To conclude, Lydia Bennet s meaningless marriage to George
Wickham shows that entering the marriage estate could have also been for mainly financial
purposes. Contrastingly, Jane Bennet, the heroine s older sister, marries Charles Bingley for love,
security, and a social ranking. On the other hand, Elizabeth Bennet marries Fitzwilliam Darcyafter
months of misunderstandings and romantic drama for none other than true love. Thus, Austen uses
her leading characters marriages in Pride and Prejudiceto exhibit the various attitudes and reasons
for marrying in the 19th century. (Lane 2015) As Charlotte Lucas nears her thirties, she begins...

Conflict In Lord Of The Flies Essay
War is the state of conflict and competition between opposing forces. Nonetheless, war can be
caused through emotional and psychological issues through two sides that obtain power from
the support of influential followers. William Golding exhibits this perception in the novel, Lord
of the Flies as a plane carrying a group of British schoolboys is shot down over the Pacific during
a combat warfare in Europe. In the midst of consternation and chaos, Ralph, one of the many
young boys on the plane, is able to distinguish the fear among the boys and use them as a barrier
to survival. Ralph s leadership is visible from the beginning as he is elected leader of the boys,
on the other hand, Jack is cheated out of becoming the leader as he resembles a militaristic
attitude who is greedy to make rules and discipline anyone for breaking his rules. A component of
the novel consists of Ralph and Jack struggling to invest in each others distinct power leading to the
boys descending into savagery and the loss of civilization during the events of the atomic war.

The purpose of this experiment was to prepare azo dyes using the combinatorial approach to show

The Importance Of Corporate Social Responsibility And Ikea
The Importance of Corporate Social Responsibility to IKEA
This essay is about the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to IKEA. Corporate
Social Responsibility is a broad subject comprising of many definitions. It can be defined as, the
social responsibility of a business that encompasses the economic, legal, ethical and discretionary
expectations that society has of the organization at a given point in time (Carroll, 1979).
Expectations of society have been the key driver for how important and widely adopted CSR has
become in today s business world.
In a competitive business environment where consumers are increasingly aware of their buying
power, they are asserting their right to not only demand quality but hold companies to account to
high standards. They are concerned with where the goods were originated, the conditions under
which the goods are manufactured and what ethos a brand stands by. It has become crucial for a
business to be built on ethical practices in order for an organization to maintain its success. Over
time the idea of CSR just being an unnecessary expense has shifted, with it coming as far as being
called out as a, definitively important strategic issue , Businesses now see CSR as a method of
generating and protecting income through creating a good brand image and customer loyalty.
Not only but also smaller of organisations gain when Corporate Social Responsibility is

Persuasive Essay On Sulfide Mining
Mining; the act, process or industry of extracting minerals from the Earth. This is a relatively
simple term that most people, especially in Minnesota, are familiar with due to Northern Minnesota
s iron range, which is home to the MinnTac facility, the largest iron ore operation in the Unites
States. However, the proposed PolyMet sulfide miningproject would be the first of it s kind in the
state s history. In order to protect and conserve the environment along lake Superior in Minnesota,
and keep local residents safe, the PolyMet mining project should be stopped. I will firstly discuss
what sulfide mining really is, and what the impacts of a mine this size would be for both the
environment and the people of Minnesota. Then I will shed light on the business PolyMet, and
what they would have to do in order for the project to succeed and be safe. An article written by
MPR news hosts Elizabeth Dunbar, and Dan Kraker titled Everything You Need to Know About
PolyMet, on Dec. 13th, 2013 states that, Sulfide mining is a term used in the Upper Midwest to
refer to mining metals that are found in sulfide bearing rock... such as copper, iron, gold and silver
(Dunbar and Kraker 1). Sulfide mining is seen as more dangerous than that of its counterpart: iron
mining. This is due to the fact that in sulfide mining, minerals are trapped in the ground along with
sulfide, thus meaning that when the ore is exposed to air and water, sulfuric acid, the same material

You watch as various people around you slam their suitcases into their overhead bins and a loud

The Effects of MTV on American Culture Essay
MTV, formally known as Music Television, is one of the most viewed networks on television
today. Roughly thirty three years old, it has changed the American culture drastically in more than
just one way. Specifically targeting teens and young adults, the MTV network provides all of the
most up to date gossip on celebrities, highlights the latest fashion trends, promotes versified
lifestyles, and defines the music industry of our generation. However, this so called idolized
network has not always been this way. The American culture has been affected by MTVthrough the

Reality shows can be defined as a catch all category that includes a wide range of entertainment
programs about real people. The MTV network executives quickly realized how fast the world
around them was changing; so on May 21, 1992, seven random strangers were picked to star on
the show The Real World. This show modernized MTV by connecting viewers to the world and
current culture around them. It also demonstrated that the network was not just about airing the
hottest music videos of the year. Even today, The Real World is stil the forerunner of the
American reality show genre. The reality genre has mass appeal. Because of this, MTV started to
create more reality based shows. As more reality shows were created, the MTV network made the
executive decision to create another network channel to further the demands of viewers. So, they
created M2, formally known today as MTV2.
As MTV started adding reality shows, the air time for music videos began to decrease
incrementally. The original purpose for M2 was to broadcast the most recent music videos of the
decade through commercial free air time both on television and online streaming. This would
hopefully bring in more viewers because of the lack of commercial interruptions. However,
because M2 was restricted to less widely available digital cable and satellite television, which
limited its audience reach to around 12 million homes by 2000. As time moved on, people wanted

how successful blacks were in baseball from 1981 1997. Blacks such as Tony Gwynn, Tim

From 1998 2004, only one black player has won the batting title. As a huge baseball fan, I never

Causes And Disadvantages Of Smartphone Addiction
INTRODUCTION Smartphones addiction is when you use a smartphone even when you know

made and received phone calls using cellular phones. However, nowadays, cellular phones are
often small computers (i.e., smartphones ) as new technology has evolved. For example, people
can watch movies and listen to music on one of these devices. Therefore, the global smartphone
market grew rapidly in 2010 compared with the previous years. With every passing day,
technology is overtaking our daily lives. In fact, 56 percent of all Americans own one. The phone,

Mothballed Fleet In America
Undoubtedly, the most egregious offender to the overall environmental health and stability of
Benicia s waterways is the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, otherwise known as the mothballed fleet.
This collection of decrepit, rusting vessels has been plaguing the beautiful waters of our Bay
Area delta for more than sixty years. Ever since these ships were decommissioned at the end of
World War II, they been left stagnant in our backyard, resulting in numerous environmental
concerns. For example, various heavy metals such as lead and anti fouling agents pollute our
waters when paint peels off the ships hulls, thus exposing the natural wildlife to dangerous
compounds. Additionally, polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, and other hazardous substances
have been released, which can cause rashes if eaten by humans and liver damage or even death if
consumed by animals. Thankfully, recent efforts have been made to better maintain the fleet and
protect our native species, and the entire reserve is scheduled to be sold or scrapped by February
2017.

as a whole and often have had family living in the area for decades, which causes moving out of

The Ethical Issues Surrounding Cognitive Enhancers
Humans have been seeking many different ways to improve their cognitive ability for thousands of
years. For example, education has been used in order to learn and improve on cognitive ability and
to improve our understanding of the world (Bostrom and Sandberg, 2009). With the advance of
technology, resources and medicine, humans have managed to develop cognitive enhancing drugs
that improve our cognitive ability by improving the attention, motivation and working memory.
One example of a cognitive enhancer that is commonly used today to improve alertness is caffeine,

The hypoactivity of dopamine then causes reduced attention, impaired working memory and poor
behavioural organisation. Ritalin has been used to treat ADHD by blocking the neurotransmitters
so they don t reuptake dopamine, resulting in dopamine being in the system for longer. This means
that there is increased motivation and attention, helping some of the symptoms that ADHD
produces. There are many studies showing that Ritalin is an effective drug to treat ADHD, with
studies showing that Ritalin decreases any abnormalities found in patients with ADHD (Hart et al.,
2013; Spencer et al., 2013).
Despite Ritalin reducing the symptoms of ADHD, the disorder is normally first diagnosed in
children as this is when symptoms first start appearing. This causes problems as children may not
understand the side effects of the drugs (e.g. anxiety, nausea, insomnia, psychosis) and are too
young to give informed consent. This means that the parent or guardian would have to give
consent on behalf of the child which relies on the child having a parent and a parent that is not
neglecting of the child. Questions arise such as, how do we know the parent has the child s best
interest at heart? Who makes the decision if the child is orphaned? What if the child doesn t want
the drug, but the parent does who makes the decision? Another problem with treating children with
ADHD is the risk of depending on medical fixes

Ah Are You Digging On My Grave Essay
Ah, Are You Digging on My Grave? by English poet Thomas Hardy was published on September
27, 1913. In this deliberative poem, Hardy uses a dialogue form to carry out the story of a
deceased woman who is wondering who the digger of her grave is and desiring that someone she
love is missing her. Finally, through a devastating disappointment it turns out that the diggerwas
only her dog burying its bone. Though out the poem, Thomas Hardy s uses a humorous tone to

As mentioned in the poem, My loved one? Planting rue? (l. 2) Rue has two meanings. It can be

regret and sorrow is what the woman thought her husband should be experiencing. When

Metaphors We Live By Essay examples
Metaphors We Live By
In Metaphors We Live By, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson give the following definition: The
essence of metaphor is understanding and experiencing one kind of thing in terms of another (5).
An obvious focal point of Metaphors We Live By, and the idea this essay will attempt to further
explicate, is the notion that the title implies: we live by certain dominant metaphors.
Some of the most universal concepts in our species, culture, and language are not only talked about,
but also thought about, in metaphorical terms.
The concept love, for example, is structured mostly in metaphorical terms: love is a journey, love is
a patient, love is a physical force, love is madness, love is war, etc. The concept of ... Show more

First, experiences themselves are ways of understanding complex emotions, controversies, and other
innate human feelings. In an attempt to understand these experiences, we employ language. But
then, the chain repeats as we search for ways of understanding our language. The metaphor,
frequently used to render language more accessible, in fact, loops us back to the beginning of the
chain: we again use experience as a means of understanding. Essentially, this complex process of
understanding our most basic human feelings is circular with metaphor providing the crucial link
that closes the circle.
Because these metaphors are central to the ways we understand our lives, the book gets its title.
Expressions like wasting time, attacking positions, going our separate ways, etc., are reflections of
systematic metaphorical concepts that structure our actions and thoughts. They are alive in the
most fundamental sense: they are metaphors we live by. The fact that they are conventionally fixed
within the lexicon of English makes them no less alive. (55)
As an integral part of our everyday language, used even when we do not even realize we are using
them, these metaphors structure our common, daily thought, speech, and action, further reinforcing
the idea that they create a circular process of understanding experience. The metaphors shape the
way we experience something, but the experience itself must, at some level, influence the metaphor
we use to comprehend

there are some similarities: both want to achieve something in the afterlife.
In Western religions such as Catholicism and Islam, the belief of Ultimate Reality is that there is a

Compare And Contrast Spencer And Social Darwinism
Social Darwinism is a belief, popular in the late Victorian era in England, America, and elsewhere,
which states that the strongest or fittest should survive and flourish in society, while the weak and

ethical philosophies always held an elitist view and received a boost from the application of

effects. Belief in Social Darwinism tended to discourage wanton handouts to the poor, favoring
instead providing resources for the fittest of all walks of life to use, or choosing specific, genuinely
deserving people as recipients of help and support. Some major capitalists, such as Andrew
Carnegie, combined philanthropy with Social Darwinism; he used his vast fortune to set up
hundreds of libraries and other public institutions, including a university, for the benefit of those
who would choose to avail themselves of such resources. He opposed direct and indiscriminate
handouts to the poor because he felt that this favored the undeserving and the deserving person

Characteristics Of Edgar Allan Poe An Unreliable Narrator
Edgar Allen Poe And His Unreliable Narrators Edgar Allen Poe is an extremely well known
horror/gothic genre poet and author. He often uses an unreliable narrator in his stories. An
unreliable narrator is a narrator that constantly switches his or her stories or attempts to justify
wrong doing. Two of this are in two of Poe s greatest works The Tell Tale Heart and The Raven.
The Tell Tale Heart is a short story about how the narrator copes with the murder of an old man.
The narrator is unreliable because he attempts to justify the killing of the old man but murder is
unjustifiable and he gives blank reasoning. The Raven. is a poem about how the narrator is
constantly reminded of how the haunting feeling of his wife s death will never leave him. The
author is unreliable because his anger intensity fluctuated throughout the altercation with the
raven. Some characteristics of an unreliable narrator are: Deranged, Insane, or they have a
mental issue. Poe often shows these character in his two great works stated earlier, The Tell Tale
Heart and The Raven. Poe is a skilled author when utilizing an unreliable narrator show insanity.
One representation of this is in his short story The Tell Tale Heart. Like stated previously in the
story the narrator tries to prove himself innocent in the short story by giving lousy excuses as to
why he killed the man. He tries multiple times to find a reason to sway us towards his side in the
story. On page one he exclaims, Yes,

Essay on Resistance to Organizational Change
Individuals when faced with any major change will be inevitably resistant and will want to preserve
the status quo, especially if they think their status or security within the organization is in danger
(Bolognese, 2010). Folger and Skarlicki believe that organizational change produces skepticism in
employees which make it problematic and possibly even impossible to contrive improvements
within the organization (as cited in Bolognese, 2010) Therefore, managementmust understand,
accept and make an effort to work with resistance, since it can undermine even the most well
conceived changeefforts (Bolognese, 2010). Furthermore, Coetsee states for organizations to
achieve the maximum benefits from change they must effectively create and... Show more content

Technical resistance is caused when employees are concerned about the capital that was invested in
the technology and equipment that is currently being used. There is also cultural resistance that is
difficult for employees to change values, norms, and procedures that are supported by the current
culture within the organization. The final type of resistance is political resistance. This happens
when decisions made in the past are now being questioned which can cause certain stakeholders to
feel threatened (Van Dijk, Van Dick, 2009).
Elements for Dealing with Resistance
According to Palmer, Dunford, and Akin (2009) there are six different approaches to managing
resistance to change which are, situational, let nature take its course, thought self leadership,
creative counters, tinkering, kludging, and pacing approach, and finally the power of resistance
approach. While all of these different methods or approaches for dealing with change have positives
and negatives, some are better than others. For example, Kotter and Schlesinger s situational
method is great in that it recognizes some situations need to be treated differently than others.
However, they suggest that manipulation could be used and while they explain the dangers of this
approach, its application is very limited and the rewards don t outweigh the risks.
Another approach that Palmer, Dunford, and Akin (2009)

Urban Land Use And Transportation Planning
Question 1. This approach has several advantages. First, it provides much more spatially
detailed information than traditional data at the aggregate level of planning districts. Hence,
using this disaggregate information, we can suggest policy implications to establish specific
land use and transportation planning. UrbanSim, one of the advanced microsimulation model
developed by University of Washington, uses gridcells of 150*150 meter, which presents
spatially detailed structure and enables researchers to evaluate current urban land use patterns
as well as predict future urban land use change at the micro level. However, a building scale
analysis provides much more benefits because it is a more realistic model and can be easily
combined with current urban big data. For example, if this agent based model is combined with
complex human behaviors data, it can provide much more specific information for predicting
events of an emergency such as a building fire and disasters from earthquake or tsunami. Also, if
this model is combined with information on spatial human activities from mobile phone, it can
provide great benefits for managing spatial and temporal planning for the urban places. More
specifically, we can identify hot spots during daytime and nighttime, which can help to predict
travel demands as well land use demand. Second, with the building scale dataset, we can deal with
a variety of urban problems and issues. For example, energy is one of the big issues in our

For example Japan relates on debt ratio them more U.S. firms. One of the explanations for different
financial structures is a different tax regime. For example, if interest income were taxes at higher
rate, a preference for debt financing over equity financing would be expected. However, according
to the empirical research, country differences in financial structure do not seem related to any
systematic to country difference in tax structure. Another explanation is that these country
differences may reflect cultural norms, cultural influences not yet been explained.
Principle behind global money management is that that firms must use the firm s cash recourses in
the most efficient way and work on minimization cash balances and reducing transactional costs.
Firms must hold certain cash balances that will cover payments of accounts payables and expected
demand on cash. The rest of the cash assets are usually reinvested on in money markets accounts
and firms earn interest on them. However, firms must have flexible accounts so it can withdraw all
cash freely. Such accounts usually have low interest rates and if it doesn t, firm can suffers from
financial penalties. That is the dilemma many firms are facing and that is why firms are minimizing
cash balances, so it can earn interest in high rated market account.
Another way to reduce costs of doing business internationally is to reduce transaction costs.
Transaction cost is the cost of exchange, it is

Smooth Muscle Contraction Research Paper
Noradrenaline is chemical transmitter at the post ganglionic sympathetic nerve ending and also
adrenaline from the medulla of the adrenal gland. This happens from the stimulation of the
sympathetic nervous system. Combined actions of both adrenaline and noradrenaline you get these
major physiological responses to sympathetic stimulation;
Contraction of the smooth muscle (example. Blood vessels, pupil of the eye) actions of both
adrenaline and noradrenaline effects result in stimulating alpha (A) receptors located on the
smooth muscle cells. The most important action is on the vascular smooth muscle; large arteries
and veins as well as arterioles are constricted, from this it results in decreased vascular compliance,
increased central venous pressure and increased peripheral resistance. These all contribute to an
increase in systolic and diastolic arterial pressure. (a) receptors involved in smooth muscle
contraction are mainly a1 in type, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The twitch tension of fast contracting fibres (white muscle) is increased by adrenaline, particularly
if the muscle is fatigued. Whereas the twitch of slow (red) muscle is reduced. These effects depend
on an action on the contractile proteins, rather than on the membrane and the mechanism is poorly
understood. In humans, adrenaline and other b2 agonists cause a marked tremor: shakiness that
accompanies fear, excitement or the excessive use of b2 agonists (example: salbutamol) in the
treatment of asthma examples of this. This results from an increase in muscle spindle discharge,
coupled with an effect on the contraction kinetics of the fibres, these effects combining to produce
an instability in the reflex control of muscle length. Beta receptor antagonists are sometimes used to
control pathological tremor. The b2 agonists also cause long term changes in the expression of the
sarcoplasmic reticular proteins that can control contraction of skeletal

Alpha Sorority Analysis
In my opinion the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is to better society as a whole
through the promotion of sisterhood, scholarship and service to it s member and mankind. They
are constantly evolving and reevaluating the needs of the human race. This is best emphasized in
the New Dimensions of Service, which outlines the five targets of the organization as it pertains
to service. I believe these targets are realistic, necessary and embody the main principle of Alpha
Kappa Alpha and how they are all necessary for the next principle to work. Sisterhood, scholarship
and service are principle that I believe I embody and will continue to uphold if allowed membership

are expressed in my actions and the strives I make to and improve my character daily through
what I call small victories : small things that can be done to better myself and others daily. These
are achieved through academic integrity and doing my part, to volunteer, mentor and help

that I ve had the pleasure to be involved with in for over six years and have been involved with
on numerous levels; mentee, mentor, ambassador and alumni commitee. I ve been afforded the

your love of service you re your dedication to scholarship for and lastly love you like blood.

Persuasive Essay On Hiking Community
Imagine you are hiking down a trail that you have gone down many times before when all of the
sudden an avalanche starts coming down from the side of the mountain. A bolder hits your leg
and it is now trapped under this rock formation with no way of escape. Your mind flashes back to
this morning over breakfast when you decided to go on this hike but thought, not telling anyone
about your whereabouts was a good decision. The importance of communicating where you plan
to hike and when you are going to do so are crucial to your safety and the peace of mind of your
loved ones. As just stated, you could get stuck under a rock or other land formation where there
is no easy option for escape. Another possibility is the weather or just your location could be an
awful place to hike that day. Lastly, the wildlife in any area is very unpredictable especially
depending on the season and they can attack you at any moment if they sense a threat. To begin,
getting stuck under a boulder or other land abnormality is a very serious and prevalent problem in
the hikingcommunity. There have been many cases where people are just going for a calm hike
when out of nowhere they get trapped under something or maybe they just fall from a slippery
piece of ice on the ground and they are not found for days. These occurrences should not be
happening when there is just a simple fix of telling a friend or family member where you are and
when you expect to be back home. Aron Ralston, a

Deciding Between Olympics or Baseball for My Reasearch Paper
Deciding on a topic for my multi genre English project was harder than I had expected.
Considering how much information is available, different viewpoints of the issue and whether or
not the subject would be interesting enough made finalizing a topic difficult for me. I narrowed my
choices down to the Olympic Gamesor Major League Baseball, as I have a strong interest in sports,
especially baseball. While researching the Olympics, I was able to find plenty of information.
When I first started my Google search, I simply typed in Olympics, which gave me over 200
million results. From there, I narrowed down my Google searches into much more specific
categories, such as the history of the Olympics, steroids in the Olympics and Special... Show more

From there, I simplified my searches into more narrow areas, such as the history of Major
League Baseball, steroids in the MLB and spring training for Major League Baseball. These
subtopics gave me fewer results, averaging in the 50 million range. With this many results for
the narrowed topics, taking different view points in each paper to the broader topic would be
easy. Using the same database as I did for the Olympics, EBSCO, I was able to find almost
26,000 results for Major League Baseball. The subcategories resulted in fewer sources, around
1,000 each. Google Scholar also offered a sufficient amount of sources, about 1 million for
Major League Baseball in general, and around 40,000 for each narrowed search. Both the
database results and Google Scholar results provided me with more educated writings and
information on Major League Baseball than that of Google. Again, eBooks seemed to be the
most logical answer to finding print sources on Major League Baseball. I was able to find over
100 eBooks, on one site alone, with information regarding Major League Baseball. The
information I found on Major League Baseball was interesting and ample. Using the sources I
found while researching the topic would lead to a well written multi genre project. After
considering many topics for my multi genre English project, I was able to narrow it down to the
Olympics or Major League Baseball. Then, after researching both subjects, analyzing the amount

King Henry Iv Part II Diction
In a very haunting soliloquy from King Henry IV part II by William Shakespeare the reader is
enthralled with the thoughts of King Henry, who is in the despairing clutches of a very common
chronic disorder named Insomnia. Through author s use of diction and imagery, we are able, as a
reader, to fully understand his state of mind in such a sleep deprived and frustrating situation.
Throughout the entirety of the soliloquy, the author, William Shakespeare, uses contrast as a form
of imagery. When depicting settings in which sleep arrives and settings in which it does not, the
reader can understand the king s thoughts. For example, Shakespeare describes, in lines six through
eight, smoky cribs or huts that are fly filled as the places where... Show more content on

The author s diction is a reliable asset to the understanding of King Henry s emotions towards
himself, who has Insomnia, and towards others who do not have such a disorder. At the
beginning of the King s soliloquy, he questions sleep in a personifying manner. O gentle sleep!
Nature s soft nurse, how have I frightened thee, makes it clear that King Henry feels himself is to
blame for his lack of sleep and that sleep being a Nurse can cure him of his disorder. It also
reflects his own frustration regarding the unresponsiveness of his sleep to come and claim him.
As his soliloquy continues it becomes evident that he begins to feel indignation and a feeling of
being wronged by sleep because others find it so easy to perform such action, while he struggles
and gets nowhere. This can be backed up by the constant negative connotative words being used
by the author when speaking of others who are able to sleep. For example, in line seven the
author uses the word uneasy to describe the setting of a place where sleep is present for people,
and in line thirteen, Shakespeare uses the word loathsome as a nab at the beds that are hardly any
good yet are still able to provoke sleep. The King s desperation is also shown when the author
evokes an entity with the utmost of negative connotation and

Successful Dating Advice
One of the most common pieces of dating advice women receive is to play hard to get. A search
of the phrase alone yields over 940 million results on Google. Each link will take a reader to tips
on how to play hard to get in order to attract men. According to this advice, woman should not
come off as overzealous, appearing needy, and to be as ambiguous as possible when talking to a
potential mate in order to appear more mysterious, all in the hopes that the mate will find the woman
more attractive and desirable. The popular dating website eHarmony equates playing hard to get
with self worth, and encourages women to do so to in order to increase their chances of a
relationship (Spezze, 2011). With so many sources giving this advice, it demands... Show more

We liked to be liked so much so that we tend to like those who we know like us more than those
whose feelings about us are unknown (Aronson et al., 2013). In an experiment conducted by
Gold, Ryckman, and Mosley (1984) when a female showed interest in male participants, these
participants reported liking this woman despite there being disagreements between the participant
and the female on different important issues. It appears that the woman conveying her interest to
the males was enough to increase their liking of her (Aronson et al., 2013). When a woman
plays hard to get, however, she conveys the message that she has little or no interest in the male.
By ignoring his phone calls, not agreeing to plans, or acting mysteriously during conversation
portrays that the female is not interested which may in turn cause the male to like her less.
According to reciprocal liking, the best way to attract a male would be to express interest in him.
Simply telling a man that you are attracted to him should increase the amount he likes you back.
Again, we like to be liked and seek out those who like us, therefore playing hard to get would not
be smart dating advice according to this

  • 2. Ontario Sex Education Curriculum Analysis Being a parent is already hard enough, but adding social media into the equation, and suddenly topics like: sexting, gender fluidity and anal sex are taking the foreground. In response to this unregulated adult information, Service Ontario who made the Ontario Sex Education Curriculum has decided to take necessary steps and include more similar topics into elementary schools. All education has its own purpose, even sex education. According to Service Ontario, The revised health and physical education curriculum is based on the vision that the knowledge and skills students acquire in the program will benefit, throughout their lives and enable them to thrive in an ever changing world by helping them ... lead healthy, active lives and promote healthy,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The school leads the sex education and has the curriculum to first educate students. It is not only the responsibility of the school or government; the parents also have responsibilities to teach their children at home. According to A Parent s Guide, it says, Parents help their children form values about relationships and behaviours and their sexual health. (Ontario, 2015) The schools, parents, and communities are responsible for educations of children to feel involved in the changed and new concept society has developed. Most parents tend to avoid this kind of communication with their children. Parents are the most important role models to give the proper ideals on the issues. The results and conclusions depend on the children, not the parents or communities. Parents should give the right for the children to decide about the issues without forcing any specific opinions on them. Society should give the opportunities to the children to face the challenges that come ahead, and make decisions to solve problems based on the education they had in their childhood. With the decisions, children or students can develop their ideas of the sexual issues and topics by themselves. Through this stage, they are able to grow up further with ... • 3. The Removal Of The Confederate Flag I believe that the removal of the confederate flag is related to criminal justice because it may be offensive to a lot of people. I feel that when certain individuals see the flag it may remind them of hate , mistreatment , and slavery. According to an article, Hays board members, on a 5 2 vote, amended the student code of conduct to ban the flag, which formerly was displayed with the Hays High School Rebel mascot. The ban also covers any imagery deemed to be racially hostile, offensive or intolerant. (First Amendment Center, 2012). As you can see there are going to be several difference of opinions on this issue. I feel that we as country should do what is best to help meet the safety of all individuals. In my opinion, removing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (First Amendment Center, 2012). With an incident like that occurring the teacher could have gotten upset and acted out on the students. The students could have done something worst the next time if the school continued to fly the flag, such as physically attack the teacher. One reason why I feel that the confederate flag should continue to fly is because of what it stands for and means to diverse individuals. For example, I do not feel that all white people in the south are racist. Owens stated, I was raised in this tradition. My forebears were Texans and Marylanders who fought for the Confederacy. In our household, the battle flag symbolized the valor shown by Southerners, most of whom did not own slaves, on countless battlefields. (M.Owens, 2000). I believe the any race can be racist to any of group of people other than themselves. Another reason why I feel that the confederate flag should continue to fly is because we live in a country that stands for freedom. I mean we supposed to be free to speak out voice our opinions; therefore, if individuals wanted to fly the confederate flag they should be free to do so. Once again I feel that it goes back to people beliefs, morals, values, and religion. According to an article, the federal government, in this biblical view, is largely unconstitutional. Thus, Moore and his fellow travelers believe that federal courts cannot tell the states what to do, be it on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Great Expectations Manipulation Essay Dickens Conveying of Receiving Great Expectations , in Great Expectations In the novel, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, the author conveys that the nature of coming into great expectations and then expecting everything to be handed on a silver platter is rather negative, through displaying how it makes people snobbish, brings them despair, and make them act foolishly. The protagonist, Phillip Pip Pirrup, is a character who is a perfect demonstration of someone who is negatively affected by their high expectations when they obtain lots of wealth. Pip says, O that he had never come! That he had left me at the forge―far from contented, yet, by comparison, happy! (Dickens 322) Pip reveals that all the money he received from Magwitch has not done him a lot of good, and he even confesses that the feeling of being forever poor and longing to be rich is far better than the stress and problems caused by being abundant in fortune. • 5. A Journey Through India in the Book “Interpreter of... Many of life s fantasies can resemble someone from our past or someone we care about. Every so often, a reader may come across a story that feels as if the narrator is telling the story through his or her own life experiences. The story Interpreter of Maladies is a convincing third person limited omniscient narration by Jhumpa Lahiri, and it shows a diverse use of compelling characters and symbols, which allow the readers to learn how narrators can use symbols to present their emotions and characters to show their feeling. The story s three main characters are, a designated tour guide Mr. Kapasi and Mr. and Mrs. Das, a traveling family. Lahiri emphasizes many symbols such as Mr. Kapasi s address, a rice puff mix that Mrs. Das carries around, and she also explains how each character has very different lives. When the address of Mr. Kapasi flies out of Mrs. Das s bag into the sky, the author reveals Mr. Kapasi s opinion of their relationship, it would be the beginning of a long term relationship and maybe even a love interest. He also thought she would write him explaining her feeling to him, She would write to him, asking about his days interpreting at the doctor s office, and he would respond eloquently, choosing only the most entertaining anecdotes, ones that would make her laugh out loud as she read them in her house in New Jersey (455). Out of all of our memory, majority of people would remember their most peaceful memory from their childhood. I may have probably be one of them, if I did not experienced such a horrifying moment as a age of four. I remember each part of the scene vividly and it is probably the memory that had a strongest impact on me for the rest of my life. My earliest memory was when I was four years old in my small apartment in Maryland. It was an ordinary day until I saw my parents taken somewhere far away that I had no clue of. She looked terribly tired and frightened as if she was chased by a murderer. Then, she demanded me to open the door grabbing my shoulders hardly. For a moment, I couldn t move nor say anything. I was frightened of how she looked at me, I abandoned the option of saying no to her and so I did what she asked. I knocked on the door as usually I would and shouted at the door Dad, I m back home! . The McDonald brothers took this theory and manifested into a restaurant. This single theory; however, was not solely the key to McDonald s success. Ray Croc is often credited for how much McDonalds has thrived because he was the first to develop its franchising system. But not even McDonald s was the first restaurant to begin to venture out through franchising. So what distinguished McDonalds from the rest? Croc utilized the techniques of the McDonald brothers along with other principals of franchises, such as bureaucracies. The audience can sense this with the direct tone in Chris speech to his father. Miller very effectively uses contrast between the tension in a scene with the skillful use of light hearted preludes or interludes. The contrast means the dramatic tension has increased. This is usually done with characters like Frank or Sue. This helps the audience distinguish the tension better. In this extract, Miller uses Keller s overriding affection and graduated self confidence at the end of the extract to bring down the tension. Keller becomes very witty and cheerful: There s gonna be a wedding, kid, like there never was scene! Champagne, tuxedos ! The tension is very abruptly brought down, as it directly follows Chris and Keller s argument. The contrast in tension creates a morbid curiosity in the audience, where they can no longer predict what is to come, which makes the play even better. This increases the rate of anticipation. The most obvious feature of drama is perhaps the dialogue. Miller uses the skill of using offensive speech to bring about the tension. He deliberately causes conflict between two characters to increase the tension. More over, Miller uses stage directions as a dramatic device to bring about the tension in a scene. • 15. Art From Baroque Period Through The Postmodern Era Essay Art from Baroque Period through the Postmodern Era Renaissance art history began as civic history; it was an expression of civic pride. The first such history was Filippo Villani s De origine civitatis Florentiae et eiusdem famosis civibus, written about 1381 82. Florentine artists revived an art that was almost dead, Villani asserts, just as Dante had restored poetry after its decline in the Middle Ages. The revival was begun by Cimabue and completed by Giotto, who equalled the ancient painters in fame and even surpassed them in skill and talent. After Giotto came his followers, Stefano, Taddeo Gaddi, and Maso, uomini illustri all, who, together with notable jurists, poets, musicians, theologians, physicians, orators, and others, made ... These texts are among the handful that treat art in the early Florentine Renaissance and are, therefore, precious testimony from the early years of Renaissance art history. While rare for being texts on art, they are of a type, however, that was common in Renaissance literature. They belong to a genre or category in which are found some of the most characteristic texts of Renaissance humanism. Other of the books in this category are by such writers as Bruni, Salutati, and Manetti, books with which all students of the Renaissance are familiar. They treat broad moral and philosophical issues, but, as in the accounts of visual art, only insofar as they concern the city of Florence. And scholars reasonably have asked why there was such a preoccupation with Florence at this time. One of those who did so was Hans Baron and his answer has been at the center of discussions of this question since the 1950s. Baron linked the focus on Florence during the years around 1400 to a struggle over Florentine independence that began in 1390 with a declaration of war by Milan and ended only in 1454, when Milan accepted the independent status of the Florentine Republic. These events, he proposed, explain the direction taken by Florentine political speculation at this time, particularly the stress on republican ideals of liberty and civic involvement; they gave rise to a ... • 16. Isolation And Love Triangles In After The Plague And... Isolation and Love Triangles The short stories After the Plague and Termination Dust by T.C. Boyle share similar plot themes, but each story represents it in a different way. Each story is told in first person by the main male character: Jed being the main character in After the Plague and Ned in Termination Dust ; Both have one thing in common, loneliness. Jed is alone after the plague killed off most of the population and Ned lives in a remote area in Alaska where female companionship is certainly lacking. Each story has its own unique story line that is told with an under lying humor leaving the reader intrigued yet on edge. The two stories are connected by their isolated setting and how the setting deeply affects the dynamics and intensity of the lovetriangles in the story. Each story has a similar setting that causes the main characters to be more isolated from the world. In After the Plague, Jed is in California after disaster struck, leaving few people left in the world. His story starts off in a remote setting in the mountains as he listens to the radio of the flu wrecking havoc around him. To help paint the picture of this new isolated world Boyle writes, There wasn t even any looting of the supermarkets there was no need. • 18. The Character Analysis Of Guy Monttag, By Ray Bradbury Life has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life. It is a waste to be asking the question when you are the answer (Campbell). Guy Montag is very dedicated to his work as a fireman, he fits the stereotypical role due to his physical appearance. His job is to burn and destroy illegal books. The book is named after the temperature at which book papers ignite. Montag is prideful of his work, he burns everything to the ground, devoid of thinking or feeling. Montag is the protagonist, although there are countless others who could have taken his place as the protagonist; there were also others who fought against society, nevertheless he was the one fireman that went against his ideals and changed significantly due to meeting Clarisse, Faber and the old woman, because he was searching for the meaning of his existence. After meeting Clarisse, Montag begins to question society. Clarisse is very straightforward and clear to Montag. He said that he can see himself in her eyes. How rarely did other people s faces take of you and throw back to your own expression, your own innermost trembling thought? (Bradbury 11). She makes him aware that he never stops to think. He tells Mildred that Clarisse was the first person I can remember who looked straight at me as if I counted (Bradbury 72). • 20. 2012 Penny Essay Conclusion Summary: Each penny had individual measurements taken. The 1984 penny had more mass than the 2012 penny, which was interesting to discover because the gold coloring added mass to the penny. In addition, all of the pennies stayed relatively the same in terms of mass, the hundredths place. The weight difference shows that the pennies mass changed during the changes. Finally, the gold penny had the largest density. The silverpenny had the second largest density, and the copper penny had the least largest density. The changes of the penny added density and mass each time. With the information, it appears that the mass increased by .03 after each change. Conclusion The purpose of this lab was to transmute a simple penny from copper to silver to gold using ordinary chemical and physical changes. To transmute a copper penny into silver and gold, two trials were performed in order to transmute two of the pennies. The 1985 penny, which remained copper, was unaffected. The 1984 and 2012 pennies were each turned into silver. Lastly, the 2012 penny was turned silver and then into gold using an extra change. Since the pennies showed a transmutation, the purpose was proven to be accurate. Since the 1985 penny stayed the same, measurements were taken immediately. • 21. Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman Essay Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman In the book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, the central thesis that he tries to point out is that emotional intelligence may be more important than I.Q. in determining a person s well being and success in life. At first I didn t know what Goleman was talking about when he said emotional intelligence, but after reading the book I have to say that I agree completely with Goleman. One reason for my acceptance of Goleman s theory is that academic intelligence has little to do with emotional life. To me, emotions can be just as intelligent as your I.Q. In this essay I hope to provide sufficient evidence to show why I agree with Goleman s thesis on emotional intelligence. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Goleman states, Emotional aptitude is a meta ability, determining how well we can use whatever other skills we have, including raw intellect. People that have high emotional intelligence are more likely to be satisfied and effective in their lives. Others who have trouble with this cannot manage themselves so their ability for successful work and clear thought are altered. In contrast to this, you can say that I.Q. is better than emotional intelligence. Having a high I.Q. does offer a lot of benefits. Goleman states that people with a high I.Q. are ambitious, productive, and uneasy with sexual and sensual experience. That high I.Q. people are the caricature of the intellectual, adept in the realm of mind but inept in the personal world. And all of this is just for the men. Goleman states, The profiles differ slightly for men and women. High I.Q. women have intellectual confidence, are fluent in expressing their thoughts and have a wide range of intellectual and aesthetic interests. Goleman also does point out that these are extremes and that everyone mixes I.Q. and emotional intelligence in varying degrees. But this does give us an instructive look at what each of these dimensions adds to a person s qualities. EFFECTIVE PARENTING FOR EFFECTIVE CONTROL OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY *Xavier.M **Dr.R.Arjunan Abstract Juvenile delinquency is one of the burning issues all over the world and reform initiatives are going on in many countries. In this study the four parenting styles namely Authoritarian, Authoritative, Neglecting and Permissive parenting styles of the paternal and maternal care takers of the juvenile delinquents were analysed to find its relation with the self control of the juvenile delinquents. Census method was used in this study as the data had been collected from all the inmates of the eight observation homes of Tamilnadu, India. The binary logistic regression revealed that paternal parenting style predicted the prevalence of Fraud (property offences). On the other hand maternal parenting styles predicted the prevalence of Force (personal offences). All the four parenting styles of paternal and maternal care takers have a strong relation with the self control of the juvenile delinquents which also indirectly predicts prevalence of the corresponding types of offence. Therefore appropriate parenting by both the care takers is important to bring about control over juvenile delinquency. A great deal of the criticisms focused on racial tension and imperialism, which were very important topics that stuck out in reading the Heart of Darkness . Many literary criticisms praise the novel and the entertainment it brings to the audience . Although the Heart of Darkness receives a lot of praise, many critics negatively criticize the novel for various reasons . Joseph Conradwas huge on attacking the topic of racism, which was a problem associated with this novel during this time period . Shockingly, racism was mostly looked over by other critics. This was due to how racism was interpreted and defined as in 1902 . The meaning of racism has changed over time . During this time period, racism, the word itself, wasn t in existence . However, that does not mean that racism didn t occur during that time . In fact , racial tensions were so common that the actual word racism wasn t used because it wasn t necessary. Chinua Achebewrites a strong critique explaining his opposing thoughts against the Heart of Darkness and proving that point. Achebe believes that Joseph Conrad was in fact a racist, and he also believes that a novel that depersonalizes the human race shouldn t even be in the running to be called a great novel . He states that the simple truth should not be overlooked in other criticisms. Achebe explains ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Bartz English 203 9 February 2015 Sex Over Time in Andrew Marvell s, To His Coy Mistress Sex and lust have changed greatly over time, especially since the late 1600s. In the poem, To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell the relationship between sex and time is rather passionate, but shifts as Marvell metaphorically describes time. The horrifying tone put on the metaphors, allusions, and the hyperboles play an important role in the understanding of Marvell s meaning on sex and lust of the speaker s lady over time. The idea that each sex act shortened someone s life has come a long way. On the other hand it is believed that the message Marvell was trying to address was how the cold lady threatened the speakers love for her. Another idea is that the poem is based on death, and how everything will one day die, rather than the passionate approach. I will prove how these 2 ideas are wrong. In lines Marvell introduces the relation between time and the lady at fault, the speaker wants to love her but it is difficult, Had we but world enough, and time, This Coyness, lady, were no crime (Mays 739). Marvell shows how if they had time she would not be at fault, more specifically their sexual acts, and lust for one another would be the opposite of sinful. • 25. Social Issues In Pride And Prejudice Jane Austen s well known novel, Pride and Prejudice, discussed multiple social themes in the 19th century. Austen mainly criticized marriage during her era, when she says that, it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife (Austen 3). As she explains that it was valuable to women since it provided them with security and a social title. The author explored the diverse motives behind matrimony in her time period by using a humorous and romantic plot to discuss the social issues. For instance, Charlotte Lucas s unreasonable marriage to Mr. Collins is a vital example of how women needed to secure a future and attain social status. To conclude, Lydia Bennet s meaningless marriage to George Wickham shows that entering the marriage estate could have also been for mainly financial purposes. Contrastingly, Jane Bennet, the heroine s older sister, marries Charles Bingley for love, security, and a social ranking. On the other hand, Elizabeth Bennet marries Fitzwilliam Darcyafter months of misunderstandings and romantic drama for none other than true love. Corporate Social Responsibility is a broad subject comprising of many definitions. It can be defined as, the social responsibility of a business that encompasses the economic, legal, ethical and discretionary expectations that society has of the organization at a given point in time (Carroll, 1979). Expectations of society have been the key driver for how important and widely adopted CSR has become in today s business world. In a competitive business environment where consumers are increasingly aware of their buying power, they are asserting their right to not only demand quality but hold companies to account to high standards. They are concerned with where the goods were originated, the conditions under which the goods are manufactured and what ethos a brand stands by. It has become crucial for a business to be built on ethical practices in order for an organization to maintain its success. Over time the idea of CSR just being an unnecessary expense has shifted, with it coming as far as being called out as a, definitively important strategic issue , Businesses now see CSR as a method of generating and protecting income through creating a good brand image and customer loyalty. For example, various heavy metals such as lead and anti fouling agents pollute our waters when paint peels off the ships hulls, thus exposing the natural wildlife to dangerous compounds. Additionally, polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, and other hazardous substances have been released, which can cause rashes if eaten by humans and liver damage or even death if consumed by animals. Thankfully, recent efforts have been made to better maintain the fleet and protect our native species, and the entire reserve is scheduled to be sold or scrapped by February 2017. Question #2: ... Though there have been some adverse health condition and people cannot swim in the water near the fleet, there has been remarkably little impact on the human population. Nevertheless, those that are affected live on the shoreline and thus come into contact with the polluted waters more often than other residents. These people generally have lower incomes when compared to the Bay Area as a whole and often have had family living in the area for decades, which causes moving out of the city to be more difficult. However, at least these people are only marginally affected by the fleet s pollution and can take measures to limit their exposure to hazardous substances, while local wildlife ... For example, education has been used in order to learn and improve on cognitive ability and to improve our understanding of the world (Bostrom and Sandberg, 2009). With the advance of technology, resources and medicine, humans have managed to develop cognitive enhancing drugs that improve our cognitive ability by improving the attention, motivation and working memory. One example of a cognitive enhancer that is commonly used today to improve alertness is caffeine, which is contained in tea, coffee and many fizzy drinks (Bostrom and Sandberg, 2009). The hypoactivity of dopamine then causes reduced attention, impaired working memory and poor behavioural organisation. Ritalin has been used to treat ADHD by blocking the neurotransmitters so they don t reuptake dopamine, resulting in dopamine being in the system for longer. This means that there is increased motivation and attention, helping some of the symptoms that ADHD produces. There are many studies showing that Ritalin is an effective drug to treat ADHD, with studies showing that Ritalin decreases any abnormalities found in patients with ADHD (Hart et al., 2013; Spencer et al., 2013). Despite Ritalin reducing the symptoms of ADHD, the disorder is normally first diagnosed in children as this is when symptoms first start appearing. This causes problems as children may not understand the side effects of the drugs (e.g. anxiety, nausea, insomnia, psychosis) and are too young to give informed consent. This means that the parent or guardian would have to give consent on behalf of the child which relies on the child having a parent and a parent that is not neglecting of the child. Questions arise such as, how do we know the parent has the child s best interest at heart? Who makes the decision if the child is orphaned? What if the child doesn t want the drug, but the parent does who makes the decision? Another problem with treating children with ADHD is the risk of depending on medical fixes ... In this deliberative poem, Hardy uses a dialogue form to carry out the story of a deceased woman who is wondering who the digger of her grave is and desiring that someone she love is missing her. Finally, through a devastating disappointment it turns out that the diggerwas only her dog burying its bone. Metaphors We Live By Essay examples Metaphors We Live By In Metaphors We Live By, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson give the following definition: The essence of metaphor is understanding and experiencing one kind of thing in terms of another (5). An obvious focal point of Metaphors We Live By, and the idea this essay will attempt to further explicate, is the notion that the title implies: we live by certain dominant metaphors. Some of the most universal concepts in our species, culture, and language are not only talked about, but also thought about, in metaphorical terms. The concept love, for example, is structured mostly in metaphorical terms: love is a journey, love is a patient, love is a physical force, love is madness, love is war, etc. The concept of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, experiences themselves are ways of understanding complex emotions, controversies, and other innate human feelings. In an attempt to understand these experiences, we employ language. But then, the chain repeats as we search for ways of understanding our language. The metaphor, frequently used to render language more accessible, in fact, loops us back to the beginning of the chain: we again use experience as a means of understanding. Essentially, this complex process of understanding our most basic human feelings is circular with metaphor providing the crucial link that closes the circle. Because these metaphors are central to the ways we understand our lives, the book gets its title. Expressions like wasting time, attacking positions, going our separate ways, etc., are reflections of systematic metaphorical concepts that structure our actions and thoughts. They are alive in the most fundamental sense: they are metaphors we live by. The fact that they are conventionally fixed within the lexicon of English makes them no less alive. (55) As an integral part of our everyday language, used even when we do not even realize we are using them, these metaphors structure our common, daily thought, speech, and action, further reinforcing the idea that they create a circular process of understanding experience. The metaphors shape the way we experience something, but the experience itself must, at some level, influence the metaphor we use to comprehend ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Two of this are in two of Poe s greatest works The Tell Tale Heart and The Raven. The Tell Tale Heart is a short story about how the narrator copes with the murder of an old man. The narrator is unreliable because he attempts to justify the killing of the old man but murder is unjustifiable and he gives blank reasoning. This happens when decisions made in the past are now being questioned which can cause certain stakeholders to feel threatened (Van Dijk, Van Dick, 2009). • 43. Urban Land Use And Transportation Planning Question 1. This approach has several advantages. First, it provides much more spatially detailed information than traditional data at the aggregate level of planning districts. Hence, using this disaggregate information, we can suggest policy implications to establish specific land use and transportation planning. UrbanSim, one of the advanced microsimulation model developed by University of Washington, uses gridcells of 150*150 meter, which presents spatially detailed structure and enables researchers to evaluate current urban land use patterns as well as predict future urban land use change at the micro level. However, a building scale analysis provides much more benefits because it is a more realistic model and can be easily combined with current urban big data. For example, if this agent based model is combined with complex human behaviors data, it can provide much more specific information for predicting events of an emergency such as a building fire and disasters from earthquake or tsunami. Also, if this model is combined with information on spatial human activities from mobile phone, it can provide great benefits for managing spatial and temporal planning for the urban places. More specifically, we can identify hot spots during daytime and nighttime, which can help to predict travel demands as well land use demand. Second, with the building scale dataset, we can deal with a variety of urban problems and issues. For example, energy is one of the big issues in our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
