with her family on a farm. Throughout this non fiction story the author Jessica Hemauer, does an
amazing job of describing her surroundings to pull the reader in and make them feel like they are
there with her. She begins as a younger girl describing how difficult it is for a child to awake from
a deep slumber, and immediately get to work doing jobs some grown men would cringe at.

to do all the things she has always thought to be impossible. I join the homecoming club, audition
for musicals and plays, serve as the president of the student council as well as president of my

have not made her feel any less different then she did before. However, she comes to the
realization that if it had not been for all of those years of hard work on the farm, then she would

Stories, I would like to ask you to take another look at the story at the end of the book and the
one that takes up most of the title, Dance of the Happy Shades. All the stories in this book deal
with the main character having a sense of otherness, but this final narrative tells the otherness of a
character observed by the narrator. Within the story, I would like to present the idea that Miss
Marselles primarily, but also her sister and the children of the Greenhill School, are the ones who
have that otherness. Not only that, but they see the world in a different way from the rest of the
characters who judge them, and the biggest part of this is that Alice Munrowants us to think about
how we see others as well.
As evidence to the otherness of the children of the Greenhill School, Miss Marsalles and her
sister, the title of this story also lends itself to a piece of music played in the short story. The Dance
of the Happy Shades, says Miss Marsalles. Danse des ombres heureuses, she says, which leaves
nobody any the wiser. (Munro, pg. 223) Why does Munro feel this title has such great
importance to remind us of it on three occasions? Perhaps it is merely coincidence, or a

In my creative piece, I was a person who walked away from omelas and in my first paragraph, I

Imagine a world where seawater is the primary source of drinking water for almost all countries.
This water could provide towns and cities with safe, regulation abiding nourishment, equipped with
all the minerals and purifiers added to modern drinking water. Of course, drinking straight seawater
day after day would not only taste unpleasant, it would be harmful to a person s body. The briny
mixture would have to be filtered and treated in processes similar to how wastewater is treated.
But wastewater does not contain nearly as much saline as seawater, so an additional process must
be put into place to fully treat seawater that is to be turned into safe drinking water. This process is
called desalination, and it is already being put into practice in several different areas around the
world. It has helped pull countries out of droughts and other natural disasters. Desalination is not
flawless, however, and more research on cost, environmental impacts, and energy efficiency, needs
to be conducted before considering it a sustainable drinking water system that the entire world can

silicon crystalline structures, and towards the non silicon based technologies. Governments and
private firms must continue to invest the capital needed to fund research and development in these
