Fire a metaphor of life
The book I have read is called My sister s keeper, and is written by Jodi Picoult. It is about a
family of five, with two daughters and a son. Their oldest daughter, Kate, got leukemia when she
was two years old, and her parents decided to have another child to save her. The newborn baby,
Anna, was used to donate blood to Kate. Eventually, when Anna is older she decides to sue her
parents for the rights of her own body, when she is told to donate a kidney to her sister. Through
the book we also meet the sister s older brother, Jesse, as well as their parents, Brian and Sarah,
Anna s lawyer, Campbell, and her guardian ad litem, Julia. Fire is a central theme in the book,

Boom, Boom, Boom...ping The uproar of violent knocks on my front door and my front door
unlocking permeated through the quiet studio apartment. My brain told me to run and hide, but my
body stood rooted to the ground.I was frozen...except the one heavy warm tear trickling down what
seemed like my lifeless face.
It was exactly a month after my 12th birthday when my parents moved me and my younger
siblings to VYV in Jersey City. Regardless of the fact that we were just staying there until my
parents found an actual house close enough to their office in New York and Princeton, I was quick
to make it my home. For my sibling and I the VYV was heaven. It had a huge playground, an
indoor pool and a game room. The VYV was also amazing for my parents because it was a gated
entry building so it was completely safe and the lock on the front door was opened by an
electronic pin code only my parents knew of. That s why after years of pleading with my parents
to let me babysit my siblings for small pocket money they finally let me.
I was ecstatic! I thought that was the happiest day of my life because I had always wanted to
babysit and the small pocket money would help me save up for anything my 6th grade heart
desired from my favorite store at the time, Bath Bodyworks.
It was the 3rd day on the job when everything went down...badly. It all started like any normal

INTRODUCTION In an effort to experience a cultural and community experience that is outside
my normal culture and encourages interaction among people with whom I might not normally
interact, I attended The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment: The Lamrim
Chenmo teachings at the Chenrezig Tibetan Buddhist Center located in Middletown, Connecticut
on July 8, 2014.
PRIOR TO VISITING THE CENTER Before I visited the Chenrezig Tibetan Buddhist Center, I
wasn t sure what to expect. I tried not to do too much research about the Center and Tibetan
Buddhism on purpose before attending because I wanted the experience to be fairly raw. I thought
the better prepared that I might have been, the less chance that I might feel the ... Show more
However, I arrived at the Center nearly 20 minutes early, which also gave me a level of anxiety
because I did not want to interrupt if other activities were going on, nor did I want to be sitting
awkwardly within the Center itself alone for arriving too early.
DURING THE VISIT TO THE CENTER As I approached the Center, I could feel myself growing
nervous. However, this is not an uncommon feeling for me, as I often feel nervous when there is
timing involved. I never want to arrive too early nor too late I want to be exactly on time. As I
came up to the Center I began to realize what some of my expectations had been (I had attempted
to think about these before I went to the event, but I realized that I wasn t sure what I was
expecting until I got there and felt that my expectations were either confirmed or denied). The

In Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, Robert Walton is comparable to Frankenstein s monster. Neither
are able to find any sense of belonging, and have a craving for the companionship of someone
similar to themselves.
Robert Walton plays an often overlooked role in this story, although he can be considered the
primary narrator. Walton is the captain of a failing expedition to the North Pole who discovers a
freezing and lost Victor Frankenstein. Walton nurses Frankenstein back to health, and Frankenstein
tells Walton of his misfortune of a life story. The similarities between Frankenstein and Walton are
made fairly obvious, as Frankenstein himself points out their somewhat similar pursuits of
knowledge and failure to realize their own limits, as well as warns Walton about the consequences
of taking an obsession too far, implying that Frankenstein sees a little of himself in the captain.
However, I think that there is an even more interesting observation to be made of Walton, by
comparing him to the monster. Both Walter and the monster experience a considerable amount of
loneliness, with a contrasting cause and a comparable effect. Both of them are also fairly
intelligent, with little education, creating another parallel between the two.
Walton s search for a like minded individual is seemingly endless. Walton is unable to find people

Clifford Odets sets up for his audience. Throughout the opening pages of the play, particularly in
this excerpt, the dialogue is chalk full with literary elements of mood, tone, and imagery. These
three elements each complement each other as they all provide the play with a dark, depressing,
