Sociology of Sport
Many in the community are not aware that the class of Sociology of Sport is offered in the
school. Many who do recognize that the class is being offered in the school may also question
the value and academic merit of such a course. What people don t see is that the world of sports
is closely linked to the social world. Social attitudes are reflected in the world of sports. These
attitudes can be seen in different ways such as the social atmosphere affecting sports, the ways in
which we define sports, exempting the world of sports from the world of citizenship and
deviance in sports. Through these ways we can see how such a class can enlighten a person on
sports and the real world. In this course of the Sociology of Sport, we intend to... Show more

A more visible example of rules changing to meet the cultural needs of a society is one that we see
in our everyday lives while watching professional baseball or MLB. The Major League Baseball is
divided into two leagues which are the National league and the American League. The American
League has a designated hitter while the National League does not allow designated hitters within
their rules. Rules do not conflict when teams of their respected leagues play against each other but
when a team from the National League has to play against a team from the American League, rules
conflict. Teams must now play according to home field rules. That means if the American League
team happens to be the home team, rules apply for the allowance of a designated hitter. Back in the
schoolyard, basketball rules are arbitrary all the time. Rules are less strict in the schoolyard
compared to rules in the NBA or in college basketball. Players also cut some slack on less
talented players who may constantly commit travels or double dribbles . Sports don t exist in a
cultural vacuum but the world of sports is very much like the world of masculinity. During the
course we watched a video of Killing Us Softly , which has to do with the study of gender
representation in advertising. It reviews if and how the image of women in advertising has
changed over the last 20 years. With

Superwoman And Lady
Women have had to deal with oppression for centuries. Not being able to speak freely or having
the same privileges as men can take a toll. Even in this day and age, women still face these issues,
and for years, female poets and music artists have used their creativity to express the emotions they
keep bottled up. The writer of the poem Lady, Lady , Anne Spencer, was alive during a time where
women did not have the social status that they possess today. She was an African American poet,
and important figure, during the Harlem Renaissance. Spencer s poems focused mostly on equality,
nature, and women. Both the poem, Lady, Lady and the song Superwoman by Alicia Keys, an
African American song writer, imply resiliency and strength in women who have had to deal with
pressures from the world around them.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator speaks of the subject of the poem as having bourne so long the yoke of men. This
Lady , whom the narrator is referring to, is implied to have had to deal with overwhelmingly harsh
men who have no regard for women s rights. The poet s attitude towards the woman in the poem
seems to be sympathetic because the woman lived a lifetime of unequal treatment and false
perceptions because of her gender, a similar situation for the majority of women in that time. In the
song Superwoman , Alicia Keys writes that she hangs [her] head in sorrow [at the] state of
humanity. What the songwriter means by this is that she is saddened by the situations that women
are put through and her lyrics are clearly more literal regarding her position on the issue of gender
equality. The state of humanity is the issue not being dealt with appropriately, and that society has
not changed much concerning the social superiority of men over women. Although circumstances
of the characters in the song and poem are different, they are both fed up with a male dominated

Virgin Of Guadalupe Summary
Whether it be on prayer cards or gold chains, the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe has resonance
with the nation of Mexico. Modern Mexican icons, such as the Virgin of Guadalupe, have
foundations in Post Conquest New Spain s plight in forming an identity separate from that of
Spain. In James Cordova s Colonial Rhetorics, a chapter within The Art of Professing in Bourbon
Mexico, Cordova asserts a similar notion. This chapter argues that local emblems, such as the
Virgin of Guadalupe and the crowned nuns, were manipulated to articulate integral portions of New
Spain s identity in the eighteenth century. This paper summarizes this chapter s three subheadings:
European Images of the Americas, Local American Emblems, and New Spanish Patriotism... Show

The extent of Cordova s debriefing on the intersection of gender with the aforementioned themes is
in relation to the hagiographers preference in imagery of the penitent and discalced nuns over
imagery of the crowned nuns. The reason being that the crowned nuns threatened the Counter
Reformation efforts of orthodoxy and had the power to ... threaten male ecclesiastical power if left
unchecked (Cordova 164). However, what Cordova fails to note in both the popularization of
imagery like the Virgin of Guadalupe and the crowned nuns, is the significance in their depiction as
not only females idols, but chaste female idols. Their chastity is an integral characteristic of their
being and womanhood, which is reflective of the Enlightenment era s emphasis on creating defined
gender roles, pushing beyond the mere difference in genitalia to describe anatomical depth. The
female gender was subsequently subscribed to the importance of their modesty and chastity.
Therefore, the aggrandization of female religious icons is not just symptomatic of the plight of
New Spain to develop a unique and respected identity, but is also in direct relation to the
enforcement of strict gender conformant. These two

Saturn Is A Gas Giant
Saturn is a gas giant. So large that it can contain about 760 Earths. However, it is mostly comprised
of helium and hydrogen with pockets or methane and ammonia distributed around the planet. This
planet has severe winds that can reach up to 1,100 miles per hour and energy on the planet consists
of lightning, ultraviolet radiation, and charged particles. However uninhabitable Saturn may sound
in comparison to Earth, it does have signs of life. The homeostatic mechanisms an organism must
have are immense in complicated to within Saturn s harsh environment. Kuki, sharing a semblance
to a flying whale, can do just that. Kuki, with it is life on Saturn, must be able to endure it ever
changing the environment and more importantly be able to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

With this mechanism, Kuki is not able to reproduce but can flourish in their environment. Another
system to examine is the integumentary system. Saturn, with it is unforgiving storms, can cause
some trouble for the Kuki. The Kuki, however, have developed a mechanism to cover themselves in
lightweight diamonds on their skin to redirect winds and prevent facing any detrimental damages
that may arise from these storms. The Kuki also have scales on their tails to protect their offspring
when it comes to deployment into the environment. This mechanism is essential to survive the
windy environment of Saturn. The Kuki also has a digestive system that contains a methane
chamber and a fat storage pocket. Even though Saturn contains an abundance of Helium and
Hydrogen, Kuki uses those elements to stay in the air. The small pockets of methane, which are
relatively large in comparison to Saturn, are the primary food source of Kuki. When ingesting
methane, the methane chamber break apart the methane and store it in the fat storage pocket. In
order to ensure Kuki never die of malnourishment, the fat storage pocket can nourish Kuki for upto
4 Saturn years. This allows Kuki to live quite comfortably on Saturn even if resources may be
sparse at times. Another thing to note about Kuki is that they circulate the outer atmosphere of
Saturn of most of their lives which can have temperatures as low as absolute zero. To prevent their

Company Law Section 14 of the Companies Act 1985
The Joint Stock Companies Act 1844, which enabled companies to be formed by deed of settlement
and the Limited Liability Act 1855, established a general incorporation procedure which offered
limited liability to shareholders and gave recognition to the company as a separate legal persona.
By the Joint Stock Companies Act 1856, the deed was replaced with today s style of constitution,
namely the registration of the Memorandum of Association and the Articles of Association. The
contents of these are now regulated under the Companies Act 1985, and form the constitution of the

In the House of Lords it was held that the plaintiff could not rely on the said article, when the
company terminated his employment, as he was suing in his capacity of a solicitor, i.e. enforcing
an outsider right, which did not affect the constitutional rights of the shareholders even though he
was also a shareholder.
The second principle was established in the case of Foss v Harbuttle . The rule being stated by
Griffin in the following way:
An individual shareholder has no absolute right to seek redress for a wrong purportedly committed
against the company in which he is a member. The company in such an instance is the proper
plaintiff to instigate such an action. Whether the company proceeds with the action will depend
upon the will of the general meeting and its board of directors. Only in exceptional circumstances
will the court interfere with a decision taken by the company to sanction the alleged wrongful act.
There are two parts to this doctrine; firstly that the courts will not interfere in the internal
management of the company. The grounds for this lie in the principle that the majority
shareholders should be able to decide whether a

How can we understand the world in which we find ourselves? In The Grand Design, a 2010 book
written by theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow, two authors claim that
they have found a philosophical approach Model Dependent Realism (MDR) as the solution to this
fundamental question of philosophy. Combining the ideas raised from methodology of
mathematics and Physics, MDR leads a possible path to reconcile the uncertain nature of modern
science and the idealistic pursuit of absolute truth perhaps the theory of everything (TOE).
According to Hawking and Leonard, Model Dependent Realism is based on the idea that our brains

According to the traditional conception of the universe, objects move on well defined paths and
have definite histories, Hawking writes, We can specify their precise position at each moment in
time.
The advent of modern physics, however, suggests that although such model explains everyday
observations, it fails to account for the behaviors of particles in a subatomic level. One of the most
famous is the Observer s Effect, according to which one can never determine a photon s path and
detect its existence at the same time, because while detecting its existence one has to collide it with
another particle and thus making it go to a certain direction. Therefore, when not detected, a light
beam behaves like a wave that goes to numerous possible paths simultaneously the light is at the
same time going through path A and non path A.
As the pluralistic view of MDR generates a freedom in explaining the reality, it also makes it
difficult for one to decide which model to choose. If several models of a set of events are offered,
one may ask, then what makes a more preferable model? According to Hawking, there are three
keys for a good model:
1.Occam¬¬ s Razor
2.Comprehensiveness
3.Preciseness and specificity
Occam s Razor means refers to simplicity when applied to qualitative principles. For instance, as
one looks at a pen, close his eyes, opens it again, and he sees the pen again, Occam s Razor makes

Gang forms only require tie about every 4 to 5 feet on center. This system does require a

The Health Care Delivery System
The health care delivery system can be overwhelming, but compare it to another country, this can
make it more confusing. Let s look further into Americas health care delivery system and let take a
look into the health care delivery system of Canada. I have always found Canada fascinating. I
hope to understand how they run their health care and maybe what can we do to our health care to
improve it?
Canada s health care system, is a group of socialized health insurance plans that provides coverage
to Canadian citizens. It also publicly funds and administers on a provincial or territorial basis,
with guidelines set by the federal government. Canada implemented their health insurance, also
known as Medicare, in 1966. Medicare is made up of 13 health insurance plans. The majority of
the financing comes from the general tax revenues and the federal government provides a fixed
amount that is not a part of the actual expenditure. The total health care expenditure is made up
of 70% health in the public sector. Territorial and provincial departments of health have the
responsibility to give medical insurance plans, decide if there should be reimbursement for
providers, and deliver certain public health services. By law, all provinces are required to provide
access to all medical services and to provide an easy way to access benefits in each providence. All
Canadian providences, expect Ontario, have resorted to regionalization. This is done by creating
administrative districts in

The norm I decided to break was to stop cursing. This is something I have tried to do for the last

normally use. I was judge by my friends in a comical way, and also this was very tough for me to

Analysis Of Daniel Goleman s Primal Leadership
This book is based on the contents of Emotional Intelligence in 1995 showing how to be leaders
and organisations with Emotional Intelligence. Traditionally reason had been the key of business
world, but this book has raised Emotional Intelligence for the key.
In Primal Leadership, Daniel Goleman divided leadership style into six and discovered they are
related to Emotional Intelligence. The six leadership styles are below :
1.Coercive leadership.
Their Emotional Intelligences are leverage, ability to achieve and progressiveness. They usually
acquire immediate obedience. They are not likely to accept other members opinions, but give
directions clearly. Furthermore, they control the organisation severely and want detailed report
from their employees. They just want others to follow him/her, but do not like to explain. This
kind of leadership focuses on bad results rather than good ones. As this style is the worst effective
one, other types of leadership need to be used with this one. It should be used very carefully.
2. Visionary leadership
Their EI are conviction, awareness and inspiration, so they express their goals clearly and share
with other members. They lead firmly but fair for long term vision. This style leads positive
environment, passion, hope and dedication. This type of leadership is especially effective when the
business is into turning point or needs changes for new vision.
3. Pacesetting leadership.
Their EI are progressiveness, ability to

Father s Law In The 1800s
At the point when pilgrim Americans settled in the U.S., they took after English precedent based
law that conceded the father guardianship of youngsters following separation. In any case, with the
ascent of the Industrial Revolution, more fathers started leaving their ranches and towns for work,
abandoning moms to deal with the children. This is the place the picture of fathers as workers and
moms as parental figures rose and impact authority choices. In 1839, England established the
Custody of Infants Act, which enabled the judge to utilize his own circumspection in guardianship
cases. The demonstration allowed a mother to appeal to courts for authority of her kids up to the
age of 7. In 1873, Parliament stretched out the age to 16 under the Delicate Years... Show more

Odysseus Fighting For Justice In Homer sOdyssey
In Homer s Odyssey, towards the beginning, Homer uses the specific epithet raider of cities to
illuminate the negative side of Odysseus when he plundered without any self control. Later, while
Odysseus is fighting for justice by killing the suitors, Homer narrates, And Odysseus raider of cities
struck Eurydamas down (418). When Odysseusis fulfilling his revenge against the suitors, he is
still described as a raider of cities by Homer. Now, since Odysseus is fighting in the name of
justice against the sinful suitors, is Homer still using the epithet in a negative way? Or is Homer
using the epithet to express a more positive aspect of Odysseus? Moreover, does Homer emphasize
that the raider of cities has changed with respect to his self possession? Homer illuminates the
transformation in the raider of cities due to his mastery of self possession. The change in Odysseus
mercifulness towards innocent women accentuates his grasp on self possession. Before, Odysseus
did not show mercy towards anyone, especially women. When his army stormed a town, he himself
states, Plunder we took, and we enslaved the women, to make...equal shares to all (146). When
Odysseus enslaves the women, Homer seems to particularly emphasize the negative quality of
mercilessness in him as a raider of cities. Odysseus does not feel any compassion when he enslaves
innocent women handing them off to men as if they are objects. Moreover, Odysseus plunders and
enslaves without any self control, which highlights that he is glorifying and enjoying himself.
Destroying a city, killing many people, and raping innocent women evidently shows the immense
amount of self possession that Odysseus completely lacks. Later on, Odysseus seems to change his
stance on mercy. After he kills every suitor, Odysseus tells Eurykleia, To glory over slain men is no
piety...Your part is now to tell me of the women...who dishonored me, and the innocent (422).
Homer accentuates the change in Odysseus with respect to his mercifulness towards innocent
women. Rather than disregarding innocent women, he now differentiates between them and the
dishonorable. Furthermore, he himself says that it is impious to glory over murdered men, which
reveals the transformation

Reassess The Food Service System Essay
The aim of this proposal is to reassess the food service process in provided within a hospital. It is
essential that the hospital s food service system requirements for all the nutrients and calories
needed to restore and maintain the health of all patients. Implementing these changes will require a
health care leader who will articulate well defined, clear objectives and measures and will
incorporate a timeline and standards for the revised foodservice system(Dye, 2010). Food service in
hospitals is changing by moving away from the traditional tray line system, in which trays move
along an assembly line, to room service, thus allowing in patients to choose nutritious meals. The
health care industry is ever more competitive, and hospitals are now recognizing patients as
customers, and seeking ways to influence patients satisfaction scores during a hospitalstay (K. Kim,

strategically identify and remove waste, cut costs, reduce labor, and increase patient satisfaction
scores, while providing nutritious meals. A Rapid Process Improvement Workshop (RPIW) will

Pros And Cons Of The 22nd Amendment
Until 1951, there was no law restricting the number of times the president of the United States
could run for office. After the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Congress proposed the 22nd
Amendment. Since its ratification, the highly controversial amendment has survived every
attempted repeal. Contemporary presidents of both parties, President Regan and President Clinton,
supported repealing or modifying the amendment whereas other presidents believed a repeal would
result in political stagnation. While there are certain benefits of restricted term limits, the otherwise
undemocratic 22nd Amendment should be repealed. David Karol, a proponent of repeal, argues
first and foremost the amendment is undemocratic and considers it to be the most offensive aspect
of the law. Presidential term limits reduce the public s influence over the electoral process.
Furthermore, the amendment is based solely on distrust and fear which historically does not make
for good policy. In his argument, Karol cited historian Henry Steele Commager who suggested that
the amendment was simply posthumous vengeance on President Roosevelt and the shortsighted
partisan act resulted in bad policy. Simultaneously, the amendment does nothing to stop the
expanding power of the executive. For example, in his first term, President Lyndon B. Johnson
exaggerated the Gulf of Tonkin incident to work around the limitations of the office. Since the
second half of the 20th century, the power of the president has

Diagnostic And Diagnostic Classification System Essay
Introduction
Mental health disorders has been very strenuous and complex to understand and diagnose, many
diagnosis criteria such as DSM have been used to determine the disorders and medication (Szabo,
2011). I am asserting that Yes, Psychopathology diagnostic classification systems (such as the DSM
or ICD) are of little use to health professionals and patients because behaviours are often
misidentified and medicalised . To assert this, this paper is going to explore four main topics that
contribute to the little use of psychopathology diagnostic classification system, these include
downsides for using DSM diagnostic criteria, Medicalisation and misdiagnose, consequences of
medicalisation to the health professionals and community and Psychological trauma in patients.
Szabo, (2011) states that Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) has been
utilised to diagnose and categorize mental illness in psychiatry. However this diagnosis is focused
on definitions of operational rather than the cause (Warelow Holmes, 2011). This paper will first
explore the downside of using DSM criteria to diagnose mental health.
Downsides for using DSM diagnostic criteria
Using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder as a diagnostic method has been
of little use for clients and health professionals as this method gives indications that are similar for
nearly all mental health issues (Johnstone, 2008). The fact is that there is no individuals who can

Churches in the world and many Catholics make it their life long dream to visit Vatican City one
day and to attend Mass with the Pope. The origin of this Christian denomination leads all the way
back to apostolic times. The rituals that the Roman Catholic Churchhas are very similar to Christian
rituals which include baptism and confirmation. Most Catholics who attend the Roman Catholic
Churchfollow and obey the Bible and the way in which their church interprets it. The Roman
Catholic Church is very similar but also very different in certain areas to Protestant beliefs but

Free will is the power of making free choices unconstrained by external agencies. For the
Catholics this statement is good for them as they are free to do good or evil. But for Protestants,
this is not the case. They are only free to do good things. Predestination is being determined in
advance where God chooses what will happen to you in life and what happens to you in the after
life. Catholics believe that your predestination is based on God s foreknowledge of you and your
actions while Protestants believe that your predestination is related to God s decrees. The
interpretation of the Bible is different as the Catholic interpretation includes apocrypha which are
books of the Bible that are added in to the Old Testament. While Protestants omit these 14 books
of the Bible. These are just a few differences between the Protestants and the beliefs of the Roman
Catholic Church. Marriage is accepted in both religions and shows the unity of two people and
shows their beliefs and sacrifices for God. Divorce on the other hand, is accepted by Protestants but
discouraged and is accepted as evidence of human weakness. While with Catholics, divorce is
looked down upon unless there is some canonical obstruction in which an annulment may be
granted in this situation. Eucharist is the

The Cay Conflicts
In many great books the characters will face a conflict if not multiple conflicts that will test the
characters behaviors and actions and throughout the book these conflicts can change how the
character or characters act. The book The Cay by Theodore Taylor is no exception to this. In The
Cay, Phillip s character reveals that because of many hardships he developed independence,
bravery, and cleverness. Phillip demonstrated independence after experiencing the hardships of
blindness as evidenced in the novel when he was able to survive on the cayafter Timothy s death. At
the beginning of the book after becoming blind Phillip acts almost completely helpless. In the
passage it states, In wild excitement, I stumbled up and fell overboard. I went... Show more content

At the beginning of this book Phillip is scared and frightened by almost every sound or little
thing he hears on the cay. As evidenced in the novel, During those first few days on the island,
the times I spent alone were terrible. It was of course not being able to see that made all the
sounds so frightening. (Taylor 65). During the first few days on the island and after becoming
blind almost every sound scares and be starts acting very paranoid. Then by around the middle of
the story Phillip talks about how since being blind his hearing has gotten remarkably better and
he can identify stuff better now just by the sound. Due to this he s become more brave and
scared be less things, but he is still not completely brave alone on the island. This is supported in
the story when it says, I went up about ten feet and froze. I could not move up or down. My legs
and arms were rigid. Timothy standing below to catch me if I fell, called up softly, Phill eep, tis
no shame to ease your own self downg to d san. (Taylor 98). At this point he has become much
more brave since they got to the island, but he still gets scared by a lot. This demonstrates that he
was still too frightened to climb up the palm tree and get the coconuts. By the end of the story
Phillip demonstrates being much more brave than when first arriving at the island. This
demonstrated well by this evidence This time, I dived in earnest. I went straight down, touched
the bottom, and then took a few strokes toward the coral sides of the pool. Timothy had said that
langosta were always at the bottom, usually over against the rocks and the coral. To my
amazement, I touched one on the first sweep and drove the sharp stick into him, swimming
quickly to the surface. (Taylor 122). So, by the end Phillip is way

Cognitive Dissonance Theory Of Smoking
Growing up I was never one for exercising let only eating healthy. Bad habits don t die easily and
soon enough as I got older they took their toll on my body. As grew not only vertically but
horizontally instead of changing my habits I only continued them. I merely changed the way I
looked at the problem by embracing the love for my naturally curves instead. Despite not only the
public looking down on hefty women but with the further disapproval of my family that the
dissonance began to weigh more. Things only progressively got worst when I was medically
diagnosed with mild obesity. It was only then that the cognitive dissonancemade me begin to
change my behavior. Cognitive dissonance theory explains the contradictions we have with our
behaviors and beliefs but it can also be used to get us to have positive behaviors.
Cognitive dissonance theory was created by Leon Festinger and to better explain his theory he
used the topic of smoking. He showed how the contradiction is so clear and uncomfortable that
something has to give either the use of cigarettes of the belief that smoking will [harm] (Griffin
et al., 2015, p.201). Cognitive dissonance in a nutshell is a contradiction that causes us stress. It
is when we act in ways that go against what we believe and the strong presence we have on the
matter the greater the stress we have. Festinger (2015) describe it the distressing mental state one
feels when one finds themselves doing things that don t fit with what we believe or what the public
approves of (p.200). An extreme example of this is the high one gets from taking drugs but the
disapproval the community might have for it. With dissonance creating a stressful mental state we
naturally want to avoid it by either change our behaviors or our beliefs.
Cognitive dissonance can have either positive effects or negative ones on a person s being. In the
Glatz, Stattin, Kerr study they considered the health and behavior of parents who find their youths
drinking. Generally underage drinking is looked down upon in the community and even in the eyes
of the law but studies have shown that parents reduce control and support in response to youths
drinking (Glatz, Stattin, Kerr, 2012, p. 629). Glatz et al

The Anglo-Saxon Generation
Imagine fifty years or more from now, when the modern American civilization would cease to
exist. What would that generation think of this generation? What would be left for them to
examine and infer about this generation? Artifacts and burial sites are one of the many treasures of
the past that archaeologists use to help them figure out what the past generation was like. What if
all they saw were very violent movies? Would they think that this generation was one that was
ruled by violence? Archeologists have found remains of the earlier societies, like the Anglo
Saxons, and they can infer what the society did and valued. Based on the poem From Beowulfand
the artifacts found in their burial site, people can infer what the upper class Anglo Saxonswere like.

This bonded their community and made it more sturdy and long lasting. When Beowulf died, his
warriors [placed] his ashes, along all of the dragon s treasure, in a huge burial tower by the sea,

greatest king was buried with the dragon s mixture of gold and other valuable treasures. Anglo

tons of bling swords, armor, rings, you name it (00:48 00:49 www.shmoop.com, 2). Since they

kings might have given them were a big deal. Overall, the Anglo Saxon s had many values within
their culture that without most of them, the society and its artifacts might not have lasted for so

School Lunch Persuasive Essay
School lunch: Do we eat what we pay for?
Lunch is a very important time for students all over the world. It is the time when all the students
talk about what has been going on in their lives as well as what they plan to do in the future. It is
also the time when they complain about how bad the quality of the cafeteria food is and how
expensive it is. The issue in most schools is that students get under served during lunch and are not
given a quality food. As one of those students who eat school lunch, I personally believe that a
better meal can be provided for a cheaper or equivalent price.
First, most students feel like they have not ate enough. Unless the school cafeteria provides
seconds, most students end up craving more food during lunch. For example, in my school,
about 80% of the students go back for seconds during lunch, even though about 25% of them do
not get seconds because the food runs out. Also, the amount of students going for seconds
depends on the kind of food that is being served on a particular day. Most students like to go back
for seconds on days when burgers and pizza are being served, mainly because they find other foods
to be all sticky and slimy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

lunch and that they are ready to learn something new. On the contrary, in schools were unappetizing
foods are served, students get back to class looking very nervous, usually not paying attention in
class and being very short tempered. This underlines the importance for a student to eat lunch
before they go to the next

Health Halo Effect
The article The Fair Trade Effect: Health Halos From Social Ethics by Jonathon P. Schuldt,
Dominique Muller, and Norbert Schwarz claims that there is something called the halo effect,
which is when someone or something has a good first impression and further evaluations are seen
as good on unrelated topics. This effect also applies to foodand is called the healthhalo effect.
Examples of this are when companies put labels on foods like low fat or healthy, this leads to
people thinking that the food product has fewer calories, estimating less calories, and leads to
people ordering higher calorie foods. There is also discussion about whether ethical food claims
like fair trade, organic, and locally produced might influence peoples perception... Show more

The first point in the article is that if there is the word organic or fair trade on the product it
affects how healthy a person perceives the product to be. I agree with this point because I am
one of those people, I am more likely to buy a product if it has organic or fair trade on the label
because I assume it is healthier. When I see this on the label I think low fat or low calories.
However, there are other factors that can influence the likely hood of a person choosing a
product and thinking it is healthy, like emoticons. A person is more likely to avoid a product if
there is a unhappy face emoticon on the label(Vasiljevic et al. 7). The second point is that people
are more likely to think a product has higher calories or lower calories depending on whether a
company treats its employees fairly or not. To me this point depends on how informed the
person is about products and companies. Many people are not really informed about how
companies treat their employees, especially when companies only allow the public to see what
they want us to see. The study was only conducted on people who had strong ethical food values
but what about people who do not have strong ethical food values. That is why labels are so
important it determines if a person perceives the product as unhealthy or healthy, but as discussed
in class even food labels can be

The Effects Of Preeclampsia And How It Can Negatively...
Preeclampsia is a potentially deadly condition that typically occurs after the 20th week of
pregnancy, in either the late 2nd or 3rd trimesters. It is most simply defined as a condition where a
pregnant woman develops protein in their urine, due to organ damage (most often the kidneys) and
high blood pressure during late pregnancy. Thankfully, the condition isn t too common, as it
presently effects in anywhere from 3 to 7% of all pregnancies, according to the U.S. National
Library of Medicine. Read to below to learn more about preeclampsia and how it can negatively
impact a pregnancy:

Causes of Preeclampsia:
Preeclampsia s exact cause is presently unknown. However, the following factors are thought be
increase the likelihood of a woman experiencing the condition:
Genetically predisposed or having a family history of the condition, or a previous pregnancy that
involved preeclampsia.
Being obese.
Having a multiples pregnancy, which of course means having more than one baby at a time, such as
having twins.
Being a first pregnancy.
The woman being older than 35 years of age.
Having a history of kidney disease, high blood pressure or diabetes.
A person s diet.
Issues with blood vessels.
The presence of autoimmune disorders.
Diagnosing Preeclampsia:
During pregnancy, a woman s doctor should always be on the lookout for all the physical
symptoms of preeclampsia listed above, such as weight gain, swelling and high blood pressure.
In addition, if a doctor suspects a problem, they should order blood tests as a way to measure the
protein in a woman s urine, and to discover a low platelet count or high liver enzymes. When
preeclampsia is discovered, doctors will do an ultrasound, non stress test and other tests to decide
if the baby should be delivered right away. Obviously, the more severe the condition, the more
likely it is for a doctor to suggest delivery.
Treatment For Preeclampsia:
As mentioned above, preeclampsia can be fatal for both the mother and the baby if left untreated.
Unfortunately, the only true cure is delivery of the baby. Ideally,

Corporate Social Responsibility And Corporate Ethics Essay
Corporate social responsibility has become a major issue in the recent past to the extent in which
there are watchdog organizations that monitor actions of corporations and file a report indicating
companies that aren t socially responsible. Such organizations are known as sustainability auditing
firms (Gallagher, 2012). This has made most of the companies that are growing to issue corporate
social responsibilityreports alongside their annual business reports. Citigroup is a financial service
companythat has been able to do this with other companies. In fact, it should be noted that
Citigroup, Inc. is the world s largest financial service corporations with a revenue base of over
130 billion dollars (MacDonald, 2011). Citigroup, Inc. has appeared in the list of Forbes 100 and
was been rated in 2007 as one of the most responsible top 50 companies. The company employs
more than 300000 employees today. Hence, this paper will look at the extent to which Citigroup,
Inc. has put in place responsible practices and corporate ethics and how they account for the
influence of their stakeholder s actions (Carroll Buchholtz, 2010).
The four components of Corporate Sustainability Model are: inputs, processes, outputs and the

Analysis Of The Poem The Rocking Horse Winner
The obsessiveness of material things that will set the household s standard beyond of those
common people resulted in a tragedy that will forever be regretted. D.H. Lawrence wrote his
idea of a modern family in the 1900 s, The Rocking Horse Winner, in which the story is mostly
between about the son trying to win the love of his mother whose only objective was to be the
first in everything by having more money. The characters, the theme, and the author s style will
give us the idea of what D.H. Lawrence is trying to portrait in the story. The next paragraph will
first show us how the author set up the characterization of significant characters. In the
beginning of the story, the first character to be narrated was Paul s mother, Hester, who was
indirectly characterized as an unlovable wife and mother. Hester was also characterized as a
materialistic person for she always wanted to have more money so they could keep living in
style. Hester s husband, whose name didn t mention, was also indirectly characterized as a
materialistic person. Hester believed that his husband is unlucky because he wasn t rich and the
she herself was unlucky too. Paul, Hester s son, is characterized as a child yearning to win his
mother s love and believed to be lucky. Because of this, he was urged to gamble with his uncle
and Bassett to make more money that he could give to his mother to win her love. According to

For the science portion of my topic, I will be talking about and explaining the fundamental tools
used by the United States Marine Corps Infantry. The United States is by far one of, if not the
leading country in military technology and power. The ability to respond to situations around
the world is a huge responsibility for the Marine Corps. Utilities and equipment are an essential

The Existence Of Life And Energy

Engineering and the Profession
Dr. Leo Oriet
Friday, November 7, 2014
Singh 2 The existence of life and energy has always been questioned. It is not clear as to how life
on earth is sustained by energy and how that energy is produced. The explanation to all of this lies
in the law of conservation of energy and the amazing work done by many intelligent people. Over
many centuries, the development of new technology has furthered studies in science and advanced
the standard of life for many people. The steam engine is one example of this. The creation of the

Singh 3 as well as meat from other animals. In engineering, energy is what powers machinery,
automobiles, and equipment. Engineers have developed many successful operations to harnessing
and manipulating energy. Fossil fuels, nuclear, hydro, solar, and wind power are commonly used
processes that extract useable energy from the earth. These processes utilize refineries for fuel,
nuclear reactions between atoms, hydroelectric power stations, solar panels, and wind turbines to
convert energy from the earth to useable potential energy. This in turn powers the machinery used
to harvest food, build structures, and travel from point A to point B. The concept of energy was in
full effect for millions of years; however, it took many skilled scientists to actually conceptualize it.

Staffing Plan Paper Adrian Gadsden April 25, 2011 Patricia Meunier Muenks Staffing Solutions for
US Military I am familiar with the Infantry and Cavalry division of the military structure and how
to make this division of the US government functional is of crucial importance. First, by the very
definition, the infantry and cavalry division of militaryservice personnel requires a special
mindset. It requires a person who understands that their life as well as others will be in a
dangerous state and at any stage of conflict that has to be a mindset that the individual will be
comfortable with. Regardless of the company for which one works, the staffing portion of any
career is one... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The recruiting aspect is definitely made more efficient through product and proven ways of
marketing, but our process will take things a step further. We will need to make sure that after
we have a recruit, again that this is the person that is going to fall in line with what we are
ultimately trying to get accomplished. We will put jobs in individual categories. What I mean
by this statement is that though we are looking for people who are going to be infantry and
cavalry ready, we also are going to have different roles in the structure of the unit. While we have
some people who are much more hands on and like to learn by doing, we also are going to have
people who will not necessarily be as hands on but can do a good job of leading by thinking
through issues. This is going to be the basic structure of the group, and with this two types of
structures, we will be able to categorize any job in a blanket way to fall into these areas. We will
use the recruiting process overall along with testing and background to encourage the recruits to
take their careers in the direction that not only will be in our best interest, but also in theirs as well.
Operations The operations side of the unit will be ultimate responsible for making sure the overall
business side of things are running efficiently and effectively

Nonrational Decision Making
In this case, there was absolutely the nonrational model of decision making being displayed. The
nonrational model of decision making displayed in this case caused major damage to our planet
s ocean life and killed workers that were on the oil rig. Nonrational decision making tries to
explain how decisions are made (Kreitner Kinicki). In this case, the two companies, BP and
Transocean Ltd made a nonrational decision by allowing the oil rig to continue to operate
knowing that there was a problem with it. Their decision making was bounded rationally which
means the decision makers wanted to make the decision is a rational way but were restricted by
constraints (de Farias Godoi, 2009). In this case, the top two workers for each company inquired a
personal issue... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Knowing that there was an issue, these top employees decided to decline the issue and move on
with operations. The proper solutions were not created to stop this disaster before it began to
happen. They did not optimize at all during their decision making which caused lives to be lost
and our ocean to be covered in oil killing many marine and land animals. Also, the top employees
displayed to the world the true meaning of the garbage can model which is broken down into four
streams of events.
In conclusion, these two companies did not complete the steps to making a rational decision
which led to a disaster. This disaster was all over the news and cost both companies millions of
dollars in clean up and a new oil rig. As managers, it is important for us to ensure that we make a
rational decision so we can obtain a positive outcome. In this case, there was no positive outcome
because there were careless leadership mistakes and irrational decision making. The workers on the
rig did not help the situation either by pumping sea water to clear out

Topic
There are numerous motivational theories that have been discussed and tested. Different students
unknowingly, or sometimes knowingly, utilize different theories since no two students are alike.
Many teachers acknowledge that different students are motivated by different things, whether it be
intrinsic extrinsic, self efficacy or interest. Not only can gender and age differences affect
motivation, but the student s self efficacy and level of goal setting also affect the student s
motivation. As a teacher, it has been noted that certain students are motivated to do certain tasks
while others are not. In order to learn, students need to be motivated. One of the most difficult
challenges of teaching is fighting the battle of motivating the students, which then leads to
supporting them and helping them motivate themselves.
Textbook Summary
The textbook definition for motivation is the inner state that energizes, directs, and sustains
behavior. (Ormrod, 2015, p. 186) It goes on to state that humans usually tend to work with a
purpose. Motivation not only influences the activities that learners choose, but it also affects the
degree to which they engage in those activities (Ormrod, 2015, p. 186). While teachers do play a
big part in motivating students, motivation also has to come from within the students. In order for
students to feel motivated, they must have certain primary

A more visible example of rules changing to meet the cultural needs of a society is one that we see in our everyday lives while watching professional baseball or MLB. The Major League Baseball is divided into two leagues which are the National league and the American League. The American League has a designated hitter while the National League does not allow designated hitters within their rules. Rules do not conflict when teams of their respected leagues play against each other but when a team from the National League has to play against a team from the American League, rules conflict. Teams must now play according to home field rules. That means if the American League team happens to be the home team, rules apply for the allowance of a designated hitter. Back in the schoolyard, basketball rules are arbitrary all the time. Rules are less strict in the schoolyard compared to rules in the NBA or in college basketball. • 4. Superwoman And Lady Women have had to deal with oppression for centuries. Not being able to speak freely or having the same privileges as men can take a toll. Even in this day and age, women still face these issues, and for years, female poets and music artists have used their creativity to express the emotions they keep bottled up. The writer of the poem Lady, Lady , Anne Spencer, was alive during a time where women did not have the social status that they possess today. She was an African American poet, and important figure, during the Harlem Renaissance. Spencer s poems focused mostly on equality, nature, and women. Both the poem, Lady, Lady and the song Superwoman by Alicia Keys, an African American song writer, imply resiliency and strength in women who have had to deal with pressures from the world around them.... This Lady , whom the narrator is referring to, is implied to have had to deal with overwhelmingly harsh men who have no regard for women s rights. In the song Superwoman , Alicia Keys writes that she hangs [her] head in sorrow [at the] state of humanity. What the songwriter means by this is that she is saddened by the situations that women are put through and her lyrics are clearly more literal regarding her position on the issue of gender equality. Modern Mexican icons, such as the Virgin of Guadalupe, have foundations in Post Conquest New Spain s plight in forming an identity separate from that of Spain. In James Cordova s Colonial Rhetorics, a chapter within The Art of Professing in Bourbon Mexico, Cordova asserts a similar notion. This chapter argues that local emblems, such as the Virgin of Guadalupe and the crowned nuns, were manipulated to articulate integral portions of New Spain s identity in the eighteenth century. The extent of Cordova s debriefing on the intersection of gender with the aforementioned themes is in relation to the hagiographers preference in imagery of the penitent and discalced nuns over imagery of the crowned nuns. However, what Cordova fails to note in both the popularization of imagery like the Virgin of Guadalupe and the crowned nuns, is the significance in their depiction as not only females idols, but chaste female idols. Their chastity is an integral characteristic of their being and womanhood, which is reflective of the Enlightenment era s emphasis on creating defined gender roles, pushing beyond the mere difference in genitalia to describe anatomical depth. The female gender was subsequently subscribed to the importance of their modesty and chastity. Combining the ideas raised from methodology of mathematics and Physics, MDR leads a possible path to reconcile the uncertain nature of modern science and the idealistic pursuit of absolute truth perhaps the theory of everything (TOE). The advent of modern physics, however, suggests that although such model explains everyday observations, it fails to account for the behaviors of particles in a subatomic level. One of the most famous is the Observer s Effect, according to which one can never determine a photon s path and detect its existence at the same time, because while detecting its existence one has to collide it with another particle and thus making it go to a certain direction. Therefore, when not detected, a light beam behaves like a wave that goes to numerous possible paths simultaneously the light is at the same time going through path A and non path A. As the pluralistic view of MDR generates a freedom in explaining the reality, it also makes it difficult for one to decide which model to choose. If several models of a set of events are offered, one may ask, then what makes a more preferable model? According to Hawking, there are three keys for a good model: 1.Occam¬¬ s Razor 2.Comprehensiveness 3.Preciseness and specificity Occam s Razor means refers to simplicity when applied to qualitative principles. Odysseus Fighting For Justice In Homer sOdyssey In Homer s Odyssey, towards the beginning, Homer uses the specific epithet raider of cities to illuminate the negative side of Odysseus when he plundered without any self control. Later, while Odysseus is fighting for justice by killing the suitors, Homer narrates, And Odysseus raider of cities struck Eurydamas down (418). When Odysseusis fulfilling his revenge against the suitors, he is still described as a raider of cities by Homer. Now, since Odysseus is fighting in the name of justice against the sinful suitors, is Homer still using the epithet in a negative way? Or is Homer using the epithet to express a more positive aspect of Odysseus? Moreover, does Homer emphasize that the raider of cities has changed with respect to his self possession? Homer illuminates the transformation in the raider of cities due to his mastery of self possession. The change in Odysseus mercifulness towards innocent women accentuates his grasp on self possession. Before, Odysseus did not show mercy towards anyone, especially women. When his army stormed a town, he himself states, Plunder we took, and we enslaved the women, to make...equal shares to all (146). When Odysseus enslaves the women, Homer seems to particularly emphasize the negative quality of mercilessness in him as a raider of cities. Odysseus does not feel any compassion when he enslaves innocent women handing them off to men as if they are objects. Moreover, Odysseus plunders and enslaves without any self control, which highlights that he is glorifying and enjoying himself. Destroying a city, killing many people, and raping innocent women evidently shows the immense amount of self possession that Odysseus completely lacks. Later on, Odysseus seems to change his stance on mercy. After he kills every suitor, Odysseus tells Eurykleia, To glory over slain men is no piety...Your part is now to tell me of the women...who dishonored me, and the innocent (422). Homer accentuates the change in Odysseus with respect to his mercifulness towards innocent women. Rather than disregarding innocent women, he now differentiates between them and the dishonorable. Roosevelt, Congress proposed the 22nd Amendment. Since its ratification, the highly controversial amendment has survived every attempted repeal. Contemporary presidents of both parties, President Regan and President Clinton, supported repealing or modifying the amendment whereas other presidents believed a repeal would result in political stagnation. While there are certain benefits of restricted term limits, the otherwise undemocratic 22nd Amendment should be repealed. David Karol, a proponent of repeal, argues first and foremost the amendment is undemocratic and considers it to be the most offensive aspect of the law. Presidential term limits reduce the public s influence over the electoral process. Furthermore, the amendment is based solely on distrust and fear which historically does not make for good policy. In his argument, Karol cited historian Henry Steele Commager who suggested that the amendment was simply posthumous vengeance on President Roosevelt and the shortsighted partisan act resulted in bad policy. Simultaneously, the amendment does nothing to stop the expanding power of the executive. For example, in his first term, President Lyndon B. Johnson exaggerated the Gulf of Tonkin incident to work around the limitations of the office. Since the second half of the 20th century, the power of the president has ... Diagnostic And Diagnostic Classification System Essay Introduction Mental health disorders has been very strenuous and complex to understand and diagnose, many diagnosis criteria such as DSM have been used to determine the disorders and medication (Szabo, 2011). I am asserting that Yes, Psychopathology diagnostic classification systems (such as the DSM or ICD) are of little use to health professionals and patients because behaviours are often misidentified and medicalised . To assert this, this paper is going to explore four main topics that contribute to the little use of psychopathology diagnostic classification system, these include downsides for using DSM diagnostic criteria, Medicalisation and misdiagnose, consequences of medicalisation to the health professionals and community and Psychological trauma in patients. Szabo, (2011) states that Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) has been utilised to diagnose and categorize mental illness in psychiatry. However this diagnosis is focused on definitions of operational rather than the cause (Warelow Holmes, 2011). This paper will first explore the downside of using DSM criteria to diagnose mental health. Downsides for using DSM diagnostic criteria Using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder as a diagnostic method has been of little use for clients and health professionals as this method gives indications that are similar for nearly all mental health issues (Johnstone, 2008). The Cay Conflicts In many great books the characters will face a conflict if not multiple conflicts that will test the characters behaviors and actions and throughout the book these conflicts can change how the character or characters act. The book The Cay by Theodore Taylor is no exception to this. In The Cay, Phillip s character reveals that because of many hardships he developed independence, bravery, and cleverness. Phillip demonstrated independence after experiencing the hardships of blindness as evidenced in the novel when he was able to survive on the cayafter Timothy s death. At the beginning of the book after becoming blind Phillip acts almost completely helpless. In the passage it states, In wild excitement, I stumbled up and fell overboard. I went... As evidenced in the novel, During those first few days on the island, the times I spent alone were terrible. It was of course not being able to see that made all the sounds so frightening. (Taylor 65). During the first few days on the island and after becoming blind almost every sound scares and be starts acting very paranoid. Then by around the middle of the story Phillip talks about how since being blind his hearing has gotten remarkably better and he can identify stuff better now just by the sound. Due to this he s become more brave and scared be less things, but he is still not completely brave alone on the island. This is supported in the story when it says, I went up about ten feet and froze. I could not move up or down. My legs and arms were rigid. Timothy standing below to catch me if I fell, called up softly, Phill eep, tis no shame to ease your own self downg to d san. (Taylor 98). At this point he has become much more brave since they got to the island, but he still gets scared by a lot. This demonstrates that he was still too frightened to climb up the palm tree and get the coconuts. By the end of the story Phillip demonstrates being much more brave than when first arriving at the island. This demonstrated well by this evidence This time, I dived in earnest. I went straight down, touched the bottom, and then took a few strokes toward the coral sides of the pool. Timothy had said that langosta were always at the bottom, usually over against the rocks and the coral. To my amazement, I touched one on the first sweep and drove the sharp stick into him, swimming quickly to the surface. (Taylor 122). So, by the end Phillip is way ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. Cognitive Dissonance Theory Of Smoking Growing up I was never one for exercising let only eating healthy. Bad habits don t die easily and soon enough as I got older they took their toll on my body. As grew not only vertically but horizontally instead of changing my habits I only continued them. I merely changed the way I looked at the problem by embracing the love for my naturally curves instead. Despite not only the public looking down on hefty women but with the further disapproval of my family that the dissonance began to weigh more. Things only progressively got worst when I was medically diagnosed with mild obesity. It was only then that the cognitive dissonancemade me begin to change my behavior. Cognitive dissonance theory explains the contradictions we have with our behaviors and beliefs but it can also be used to get us to have positive behaviors. Cognitive dissonance theory was created by Leon Festinger and to better explain his theory he used the topic of smoking. He showed how the contradiction is so clear and uncomfortable that something has to give either the use of cigarettes of the belief that smoking will [harm] (Griffin et al., 2015, p.201). Cognitive dissonance in a nutshell is a contradiction that causes us stress. It is when we act in ways that go against what we believe and the strong presence we have on the matter the greater the stress we have. Festinger (2015) describe it the distressing mental state one feels when one finds themselves doing things that don t fit with what we believe or what the public approves of (p.200). An extreme example of this is the high one gets from taking drugs but the disapproval the community might have for it. With dissonance creating a stressful mental state we naturally want to avoid it by either change our behaviors or our beliefs. Cognitive dissonance can have either positive effects or negative ones on a person s being. In the Glatz, Stattin, Kerr study they considered the health and behavior of parents who find their youths drinking. Generally underage drinking is looked down upon in the community and even in the eyes of the law but studies have shown that parents reduce control and support in response to youths drinking (Glatz, Stattin, Kerr, 2012, p. 629). It is the time when all the students talk about what has been going on in their lives as well as what they plan to do in the future. It is also the time when they complain about how bad the quality of the cafeteria food is and how expensive it is. The issue in most schools is that students get under served during lunch and are not given a quality food. As one of those students who eat school lunch, I personally believe that a better meal can be provided for a cheaper or equivalent price. First, most students feel like they have not ate enough. Unless the school cafeteria provides seconds, most students end up craving more food during lunch. For example, in my school, about 80% of the students go back for seconds during lunch, even though about 25% of them do not get seconds because the food runs out. Also, the amount of students going for seconds depends on the kind of food that is being served on a particular day. Most students like to go back for seconds on days when burgers and pizza are being served, mainly because they find other foods to be all sticky and slimy. ... This effect also applies to foodand is called the healthhalo effect. Examples of this are when companies put labels on foods like low fat or healthy, this leads to people thinking that the food product has fewer calories, estimating less calories, and leads to people ordering higher calorie foods. The first point in the article is that if there is the word organic or fair trade on the product it affects how healthy a person perceives the product to be. I agree with this point because I am one of those people, I am more likely to buy a product if it has organic or fair trade on the label because I assume it is healthier. When I see this on the label I think low fat or low calories. However, there are other factors that can influence the likely hood of a person choosing a product and thinking it is healthy, like emoticons. A person is more likely to avoid a product if there is a unhappy face emoticon on the label(Vasiljevic et al. 7). The second point is that people are more likely to think a product has higher calories or lower calories depending on whether a company treats its employees fairly or not. To me this point depends on how informed the person is about products and companies. Many people are not really informed about how companies treat their employees, especially when companies only allow the public to see what they want us to see. The study was only conducted on people who had strong ethical food values but what about people who do not have strong ethical food values. We will need to make sure that after we have a recruit, again that this is the person that is going to fall in line with what we are ultimately trying to get accomplished. We will put jobs in individual categories. What I mean by this statement is that though we are looking for people who are going to be infantry and cavalry ready, we also are going to have different roles in the structure of the unit. While we have some people who are much more hands on and like to learn by doing, we also are going to have people who will not necessarily be as hands on but can do a good job of leading by thinking through issues.
