Old Spice Stereotypes
Intro: Advertisements have been evolving over the centuries in terms of catching the audience s
attention. The art, text, and style all have been changed, but one hasn t. The gender stereotypes in
advertisement have been constant throughout time and product. A company called Old Spice has
displayed these stereotypes in their product line specifically towards men. Thesis: In the body wash
soap advertisement featuring Old Spice the advertisers display masculinity in the form of status,
strength, wealth and confident attitude. Old spice accomplishes this by presenting a fit celebrity,
posture, facial expression, quote and choice of colors. 1 Body Par (celeb): The celebrity, Isaiah

International Trade Activity And The Related Logistic Issues
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Definition of key area under investigation
This report aims to investigate the international trade activity and the related logistic issues that
Germany had to face in the last two decades. This includes an overview of the key trends regarding
the import/export activity in terms of volume and value of freight goods moved, the impact of exports
on the GDP, the top trading partners and the main commodities that have been trade in the last 20
years. The report also focuses on how the transport infrastructure (considering both internal and
external factors) has impacted the trade activities. Furthermore, it will provide an analysis of the
challenges and opportunities Germany will have to face within 2035.
1.2 Germany background
Germany is situated in the hearth of Europe and that makes it a fundamental hub for the entire
continental international trade activity. Since its unification in 1990, Germany developed an extreme
dense transport infrastructure that nowadays consists of 650.000 Km of roads, 37.860 Km of railways
lines operated, 7.675 Km of inland canals and rivers which link the country with the Kieal Canal and
the sea, 23.000 Km2 of sea waterways, 2.500 Km of pipelines for the crude oil transportation and 16
international airports spread throughout the country (Destatis.de, 18/10/2015).
1.3 Scope of the report
The scope of this reports is to investigate the international trade activity in terms of freight goods

The Invention Of Soviet Montage Film
The Soviets realized that through editing, two shots could provoke an emotion or idea that was not
originally present in either of them. Eisenstein described it perfectly: Everyone who has had in his
hands a piece of film to be edited knows by experience how neutral it remains, even though a part of a
planned sequence, until it is joined with another piece, when it suddenly acquires and conveys a
sharper and quite different meaning than that planned for it at the time of filming (Giannetti 163). The
invention of Soviet montage editing allowed for filmmakers to develop a new power in which they
could psychologically manipulate audiences. Earlier studies of montage cinema have solely focused
on its visual and technical properties; however, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once the 1917 revolution began, it was difficult to get access to film stock. As a result, filmmakers
learned the art of filmmaking through experimentation with found footage, specifically by observing
what would happen when combining this found footage together in various ways. The revolution
resulted in an increased demand for political propaganda, and certain revolutionaries such as Vladimir
Lenin (founder of the Russian Communist Party and leader of the Bolshevik Revolution) insisted that
the best way to communicate revolutionary ideas was through film. In 1922 Lenin stated, Of all the
arts, for us the cinema is the most important (Film Art 477). Lenin saw film as the ideal tool for
education and thus encouraged the documentary as well as propaganda style of filmmaking. Eisenstein
and Vertov detested the bourgeois continuity style of filmmaking and deemed it a false reality. Instead,
they supported the Marxist system that focused on the conflict of political ideologies. Eisenstein was
adamant about using cinema as a way to arouse emotions and urge civilians to support the revolution.
Eisenstein used the technique of intellectual montage where he would combine images and then
contrast them (Barrance 2015). This can be seen in his 1925 film Strike where he juxtaposes shots of
someone slaughtering a cow with shots of military troops killing innocent workers, implying that
innocent people are being executed in the same way as animals. In his 1928 film October, Christian
emblems are cut together with shots of religious symbols from different cultures, which suggests that
all religions are ultimately one and the same. The most famous montage filled Eisenstein film is his
1925 masterpiece

Freudian Analysis Of Zuñi Tale
Freudian Analysis of Zuñi Tale Sigmund Freud, the famed Austrian neurologist, pioneered the process
of psychoanalysis, which was intended to be a clinical method to treat neurosis and other forms of
psychopathology. However, it has also found use in analyzing stories, dreams, and myths. Freud s
method of developing latent thoughts through manifest content will be demonstrated in the following
paper, which focuses on a Zuñi folktale called The Ugly Wild Boy Who Drove the Bear Away from
South Eastern Mesa. The story is about a young boy who lives with his grandmother near a village
called K iákime. This boy is unlike others in that he is frightfully ugly ; with scars all over his body, he
suffers from distorted facial features and abnormal growths on his head. One season it rains heavily in
the Southeastern Mesa near K iákime, bringing forth fresh growth like nuts from piñon trees, fruit
from datilas, and seeds from the gray grass and redtop. However, the villagers are unable to retrieve
them because an old, frightening bear claims the territory for himself, ... Show more content on

Raining is a phallic symbol with relation to urination, and in the context of the story, it also brings
forth fertility. Freud s works explain fruits as a symbol of breasts, in line with the concept of fertility.
Whether they stand for fertility or specifically breasts, the datila fruit, piñon nuts, and grass seed
represent desirable items to the boy and the villagers. Unfortunately, the bear prevents the village from
gathering the fruit, which drives the story s main conflict. A towering, violent animal, the bear is the
principle foe of the boy, and further affirms the notion of the simpleton hero story; in comparison, the
boy is weak, yet he can defy all odds and defeat a more powerful enemy. Moreover, his unexpected
wild nature is like that of the initially unrepressed id, which seeks to be controlled throughout the

Themes in The Invisible Man by H.G Wells
The Invisible Man has many possible themes. There are multiple examples of different themes in the
novel. Most of them can almost fall under the same idea. The main theme for the novel is how
excessive greed can have unintended consequences. The main character, Griffin, goes mad with the
power of being invisible. It gets to the point that he is not even trying to just stay hidden anymore, he
is just trying to cause as much mayhem in the country as possible. One of the first instances of greed is
when he starts to take advantage of Mrs. Hall, the woman who owns the Coach Horses Inn. Mrs. Hall
mainly feels bad for him at first because she thinks he is very hurt or injured in some sort of way due
to him wrapping his head up. Griffin keeps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Soon all over the town burglaries start to occur. In the middle of the night the people who are being
robbed can hear someone in their house, but when they search around there is no one to be found. So
since the incident with Mr. Cuss and all these burglaries, the townspeople start to point fingers are
Griffin. The Hall s even send a person after Griffin to perform an exorcism thinking he is a witch or
something that has to do with magic. After a while Griffin does not pay his bill at the inn for a few
days, Mrs. Hall wants an explanation for it. He even tries to give her more money but she refuses it.
Now earlier in the novel him paying for his rent with the money he stole was only real use for the
money. Now that he cannot even give Mrs. Hall any more money, he has no use for the money he has
stolen whatsoever. After she asks for an explanation, he removes all of his clothes to show how he
invisible. Tons of people come to inn to see what is going on, soon a man comes to take him in for
questioning about all of the burglaries that have been going on all around the town. Griffin becoming
exposed to the entire town now has caused him to flee to the country or farm area. Once again he has
been punished in a way for the things he has done. He definitely could have gone around having to
leave the town. He got way to greedy and careless about his actions. The only way he is trying to fix
his problems are by violence or just idiotic

Gang Subcultures Of Gangs
Hence, according to differential opportunity theory, if one is to create gang subcultures of criminal,
conflict, and retreatist; then there must be opportunity, or lack thereof to for one to participate in the
illegitimate structure, which would require the pre existence of gangs (Cloward Ohlin, 1960 in
Williams McShane, 2014, pg. 99 100). It should be noted that Curry and Spergel (1992) found that the
[prior] presence of gang members both males and females are also significant estimators for one to
become involved in a gang (pg. 284). Furthermore, the two strongest factors for individuals to become
involved in gangs was if a family member was already involved in a gang, or being near drug
distributors (Curry Spergel, 1992, pg. 284). Thus, if an individual were to join a gang it is probable
that there: is a prior presence of gangs in their neighbourhood, they have a family member that is in
gang, or the individual is near drug distributors, all of whom who would likely mentor the individual
(Curry Spergel, 1992, pg. 284). While this explains criminal gangs, it does not state if retreatist or
conflict gangs exist. Nevertheless, according to Klien and Maxson (2006), one consequence of gang
participation is drug abuse (retreatist) (as cited in Pitts, 2008, pg. 27). In terms of conflict gangs,
Yablonsky (1962) asserts that gang members are sociopaths, bent upon violence (as cited in Pitts,
2008, pg. 26); however, Christopher Schreck, Jean McGloin, and David Kirk (2009) indicate
otherwise, as they state that conflict subcultures are not solely defined by violence (pg. 789).
Additionally, differential opportunity theory states that a lower class individual will only have access
to illegitimate opportunities, as their SES deprives them of the chance to participate in the legitimate
avenues (Williams McShane, 2014, pg. 99). As stated previously, gang members tend to be poor and
racial minorities (Curry Spergel, 1988, pg. 399); in turn, having access to legitimate opportunities is
unlikely due to economic deprivation. Therefore, for gang members, after they fail or do not have an
opportunity to succeed through legitimate avenues such as employment and education, they resort to
illegitimate means to

Song Of Solomon Rhetorical Analysis
Song of Solomon Quotation Explication Test
3. The passage from Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison describes Milkman s confrontation with his
mother, Ruth, at the cemetery. Before, Macon has convinced Milkman to be disgusted of Ruth because
of Ruth s supposed affair with her father and Ruth s nature as a sexual deviant. One day, Milkman
follows Ruth to see with his own eyes the proof that Ruth is a sexual deviant, and Milkman is led to
the cemetery. Milkman confronts Ruth whom reveals that she did not have an affair with her father.
Ruth says, No. But I did kneel there in my slip at his bedside and kiss his beautiful fingers, which
contradicts Macon s account of what happened. Ruth, fully clothed, only kissed the hands of her
mother. Ruth did not strip naked and kiss her father on the mouth like Macon said. Then, Milkman

This passage from the Song of Solomon describes Lena s confrontation with Milkman after Milkman
ratted out Corinthian s relationship with Porter to Macon which led to Macon breaking up the
relationship and evicting Porter from the apartments. The passage says, When you slept, we were
quiet; when you were hungry, we cooked; when you wanted to play, we entertained you. Lena has had
enough of catering to Milkman and Milkman pissing on everyone. Lena and Corinthian has slaved
away for Milkman s comfort without a single thank you, and they developed a strong sisterly bond as
a result. So, when Milkman ruined Corinthian s relationship, it was the last straw for Lena and she
wanted Milkman out of the house. Milkman was trying to be a better persona and calmly said, Lena,
cool it. I don t want to hear it. However, Milkman came out as apathetic and uncaring to Lena who
replies that the only reason Milkman has the right to decide our lives is due to the that hog s gut that

Capitalism and the Natural Environment Essay
Concept of capitalism can be difficult to understand. It is commonly identified by economist and
political philosophers as a system in which the means of production are privately owned and operated
in the free market in exchange for a profit (Galbraith, 1952). The economical/social system determines
the structure of production, the allocation of inputs and outputs, and consumption of goods. Capitalism
remains popular in America because it values freedom, much like the people in our country. This is
true because it allows individuals to set their own plans and pursue their own goals; in addition, one
can decide what career they would enjoy most, thus creating an incentive and reward for achieving
ones ambitions. In a free market, everyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Capitalism leads to the creation of unprecedented wealth, advanced technology, and wide prosperity.
Yet capitalism is denounced as a system of greed, materialism, and ruthless dog eat dog competition
One positive implication capitalism has to the natural environment is industrial ecology, a system of
chain production and consumption, serving to the lowest environmental impacts in a most
environmentally sustainable economy as the main goal of operation (Richards Pearson, 1998). The
Companies in a like to operate in such way because of four major reasons. The most important factor
is known as the corporate well being, for it is determined by higher profits and growth provided by
innovations in an industry. Profits are increased from recognizing the production ineffiency costs that
comes from wasted inputs and energy losses; this allowing cost savings to increase and ineffiency to
decrease. compliance with cleaner technology alternatives such as ones that produce less waste and
less energy will provide long term savings which are both beneficial to the environment and the
business at hand. A real world example freight company changes their salvaged driving equipment to
hybrid vehicles. Money is temporarily lost, but the gasoline and maintenances cost savings will
compensate in a long run period of time.
Industrial ecological systems are also used because of the consumer demand.

Early and Mid 19th Century Thought Essay
Early and Mid 19th Century Thought
Throughout history, there have been many isms that had come and gone. Many things have come out
of these so called isms.
Romanticism began in the closing decades of the eighteenth century. It practically dominated
European cultural life in most of the first half of the nineteenth century. Poets such as Shelley,
Wordsworth, Keats, and Byron were all exponents of romanticism. This was expressed in many
different ways such as Writing, art and music.
Victor Hugo, A.W., Friedrich Schlegel, Schiller and Schelling all expressed their thoughts of
romanticism through writing. Caspar David Friedrich and John Constable expressed their thoughts on
romanticism on canvas through art. Later on, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Liberals attacked the state and other authorities that prevented the individual from exercising the right

To the traditional rulers of Europe #8212;kings, aristocrats, and clergy #8212;the French Revolution
was a great evil, which had inflicted a near fatal wound on civilization. Edmund Burke s Reflections
on the Revolution in France was instrumental in shaping conservative thought. Burke, an Anglo Irish
statesman and political theorist, wanted to warn his countrymen of the dangers inherent in the
ideology of the revolutionaries.
Conservatism pointed to a limitation of the enlightenment. It showed that human beings and social
relationships are far more complex than the philosphes had imagined. They often find familiar
customs and ancestral religions more satisfying guides to life than the blueprints of philosophers.
Conservative theorists warned that revolutionary violence in the pursuit of utopian dreams transforms
politics into an ideological crusade that ends in terror and despotism.
Nationalism is a conscious bond shared by a group of people who feel strongly attached to a particular
land and who possess a common language, culture, and history, marked by shared glories and

The Conspiracy of Water Fluoridation Essay examples
Few object to the therapeutic use of fluoride to stop tooth decay, but fluoridation, the addition of
fluoride to the public water supply, can spark avid controversy. Most dentists, medical groups, and
government officials argue that fluoridation is a cheap and risk free venture that doubles cavity
prevention. In contrast, a small minority of dentists and conservative political groups argue that
fluoride is a hazardous, poisonous substance that should not be consumed. Some antifluoridationists
even claim that fluoridation is an untrustworthy form of socialized medicine. But rather than just
attacking fluoridation as socialized medicine, opponents originally claimed that it was a conspiracy to

Constitutionality was frequently mentioned during a 1954 House Congressional hearing on the
Fluoridation of Water that discussed the enactment of a national ban to protect the public health from
the dangers of fluoridation of water (U.S. Congress, 1). Opponents appealed to the First Amendment
in two contexts. First, a pamphlet clearly depicted the view that fluoridation constitutes a socialistic
form of mass medication violating our State laws and the Federal Constitution... [and] involves an
unwarranted interference with individual liberty (U.S. Congress, 323). Placing fluoride in the public
water supply denied opponents the freedom of expression to not be medicated. Christian Scientists
also claimed that fluoridation violated the freedom of religion. At the hearing, James Watt, a
spokesman of Christian Science, testified that mass medication, constituted a violation of fundamental
religious rights by violating a Christian Scientist s right to heal with just prayer (U. S. Congress, 59).
Opponents argued that as long as alternatives to water treatment existed, fluoridation was
unconstitutional and Un American due to its violations of individual rights.
The visible conflict of paradigms results from the opposition s conscious identification with political
ideologies, whereas the fundamental cause of fluoridation opposition emerges from the individual s
subconscious craving for natural purity. According to Morris

Competitive Strategy Southwest Airlines
The domestic US airline industry has been intensely competitive since it was
deregulated in 1978. In a regulated environment, most of the cost increases were
passed along to consumers under a fixed rate of return based pricing scheme. This
allowed labor unions to acquire a lot of power and workers at the major incumbent
carriers were overpaid.
After deregulation, the incumbent carriers felt the most pain, and the floodgates had
opened for newer more nimble carriers with lower cost structures to compete head on
with the established airlines. There were several bankruptcies followed by a wave of
consolidation with the fittest carriers surviving and the rest being acquired or going out of
business.
Analysis of the airline industry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main consideration for
profitable entry seemed to be the ability of airlines to fill their airplanes above the breakeven
point. In an industry fraught with price competition, brand identity and reputation
did not have significant value either.
In the airline industry, exit costs are not very high either. Planes could be easily redeployed
to other markets, or sold off, and gates and landing rights could be sub leased
to other carriers.
Substitutes
There are a number of substitutes to air travel, especially over short distances. These
include taking other modes of transportation such as driving, taking the train etc., or not
traveling at all. The use of technology (like WebEx, NetMeeting, video conferencing etc.)
that facilitates remote virtual collaboration is becoming a good substitute for business air
travel as well.
Supplier Power
The primary inputs to the airline industry include airplanes, labor and fuel. There are only
two major manufacturers (three at the time of the case Boeing, Airbus and McDonnell
Douglas) for large commercial aircraft. This, along with the relationship specific
investment that the airlines make in the form of trained mechanics, existing stock of
aircraft etc., is likely to give the aircraft manufacturers some supplier power. A mitigating
factor for this supplier

Radiation Concentration Of Unknown Samples Using A Uv...
etermination of iodine concentration of Unknown samples using a UV Visible Spectrophotometer.
Abstract:
The purpose of this experiment is to use UV/Visible Spectrophotometer to determine the concentration
on three unknown samples of iodine (A, B and C), this is done by measuring the absorbance of
different known concentration of iodine using a UV/Visible Spectrophotometer and plotting a
calibration curve of Absorbance Vs Concentration (as shown in Fig 4). This is used to find the
concentration of the unknown samples as the absorbance was measured using a UV
Spectrophotometer. The wavelength used to measure the absorbance is 287.20 nm and the method
number used was 40 . The concentration of Samples A, B and C are 1.48*10 4M, 1.03*10 4M ... Show

When a light set at a specific wavelength enters the cuvette which contains the solution that need to be
tested, some of the incident light (I0) is absorbed by the solution, and the rest of the light which leaves
the solution (the transmitted light I) is detected, the amount of light absorbed depends on the
concentration of the solution. The amount of light that goes into the solution and the amount of light
that leaves the solution gives a value of the absorbance (A) of the solution which can be calculated by
using the equation: (A= log (I/I0)). This equation assumes that all the incident light is either
transmitted or absorbed, therefore, reflection or scattering are insignificant. [1]
The quantity of light absorbed is inversely proportional to the logarithm of the amount of light
absorbed by the substance. The amount of light absorbed by a substance is directly proportional to the
concentration of the substance (As the concentration increases, the absorbance also increases provided
that the wavelength is constant). [1]
A=lc [1]
Where is the substance and wavelength specific absorption coefficient,
I is the length the light travels through the sample and c is the concentration of the sample. [1]
To comprehend the theory behind how a spectrophotometer works, an understanding of the
relationship between energy and light must be required. Light contains tiny packs

The Writer In The Family Short Story
In John Updike s A P, and E.L. Doctorow s The Writer in The Family, two boys take part in a journey
of their early lives and find the words they need to be advocate for themselves. Both Sammy and
Jonathan defy an adult authoritative figure; nevertheless, they handle their rebellion differently.
Despite these differences, their experiences lead them both on a similar path of self discovery. The
opposition and determination these characters demonstrate throughout each story shows the struggles
that come with growing up and accepting oneself as an independent person.
The first similarity these boys face is an adult authority figure. In A P, Sammy works a job and lives a
life he does not want because his parents are expecting him to go down the same path as they did.
Sammy does what is considered normal for someone his age. He describes looking outside and seeing
about twenty seven old freeloaders tearing up Central Street because the sewer broke again. It s not as
if we re on the Cape; we re north of Boston and there s people in this town haven t seen the ocean for

The Operational Safety Management System
INTRODUCTION Any well designed safety program or system is only as effective as the day to day
ability of everyone in the organisation to rigorously follow procedures correctly and safely every time.
(Angiullo in Hopkins, 2009: p.147) This statement is based on organisational discipline or each
worker as having the self restraint to perform every task required.
Angiullo supports the statement by discussing the operational safety management system in three core
areas: leadership characteristics; well defined and followed management processes; and maintenance
of high standards. Organisations only fully conform to organisational discipline when these three areas
are effectively implemented within the organisation. (Angiullo in Hopkins, 2009). This essay will
discuss why it is believed to be an utopian statement by comparing the core areas against the AS/NZ
4801:2001 Occupational health and safety management systems specification with guidance for use
and supporting literature.
LEADERSHIP CHARACTERISTICS
An organisation s managerial leadership and commitment is defined from the top levels and filters
through to the front line worker. Leadership inspires and motivates only when it is consistent. What
management do or do not do including providing resources, their personal actions or the method of
communication can motivate or demotivate workers (Cutchfield, Roughton 2014). It has been
identified that leadership language, behaviour and trustworthiness shapes the beliefs and

Epic Of Beowulf Argumentative Essay
You have known about the brilliance of Beowulf the Great, slayer of the foul beast Grendel and of
Grendel s reviled mother, who dragged the ring supplier to her den, much to her own lament; Beowulf,
who slew the monster of the fortune store, the mythical beast who killed our kin for the loss of yet one
gold glass. In spite of the fact that Beowulf s own cutting edge, Naegling, fizzled him in desperate
hour, with the assistance of his brother Wiglaf, he put a conclusion to the reviled worm, however he
lost his life in the fight.
Presently you should know about the childhood of Beowulf and how he picked up the quality of thirty
men in his grasp, the quality he used to tear the arm from the killing Grendel, the descendent of Cain,
the main murder. King Hrethel, understood among the tribes, a honorable pioneer of the Geats, was as
a father to Beowulf, however Beowulf was not the child of his loins. You know from the story of
Beowulf the man that he conveyed the pennant of war into fight interestingly at seven years old.
The person who conveys the pennant serves to rally the warriors at vital circumstances. He should
hold it up high and never discharge his grasp upon it. This the youthful Beowulf did as no developed
man had ever done. He planted his feet in the earth like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Complications Of Government Corruption
Introduction: If we read the News today, we could see that the government all over the world is
corrupt. According to US Legal, government corruption is when government leaders abuse their
political power to extract and accumulate for private enrichment (US Legal, Inc.)[1]. Technically, this
is a bad thing because when government leaders use their power for their benefit, it does not
necessarily mean that it is beneficial to the public and the society. To prove or disprove this argument,
I decided to run an econometric analysis to see whether government corruption hinders or helps
economic development. Method: There were three datasets I used for this paper. The first and the main
dataset was the dataset that contained the data on government corruption, which came from the
Worldwide Governance Indicators excel file posted on World Bank. From this dataset, I pulled out one
important variable called Corruption, which is a measure of the government performance. It ranges
from 2.5 (bad government performance/corrupted) to 2.5(good government performance/not
corrupted). We need to be careful when interpreting this variable because even though this is a
corruption measure, higher positive value actually means the government is doing better and less
corrupted. The second dataset I used was Penn World Table version 9.0[3]. From this dataset, I pulled
out the variables: average hours worked (avh), human capital index, based on years of schooling and

There are many advantages and disadvantages of attending a HBCU and a predominantly white

a predominantly white university. These larger institutions receive more state funding as well as large
donations from alumni and corporations. These strong funding resources provide them with the
opportunity to offer more generous financial aid packages. The disadvantages for a HBCU is that they
don t have these large endowments, which explains why there are unable to offer the scholarships or

The Russ Celebration Essay
We live in a globalized yet diverse world where people want to hold on to their unique culture and

the Spanish society is the grand Tomatina Festival, where participants throw tomatoes at each other. In
India, people celebrate the spring festival, Holi, by coloring each other s faces and clothes with dry

The Crime Of Organized Crime
When I hear the term organized crime, I associate it with The Mafia , Scarface , and Cartels .
Organized crime can be defined in a variety of ways. It is an ongoing criminal enterprise that is wisely
working to generate profit engaging in illegal activities depending on demand, where its presence is
preserve through force, intimidations, and corruption. According to the FBI, organized crime is
basically a group of transnational, national, or local alliances of highly centralized enterprises run by
crooks who make illicit profit or money through illegal and often violent activities (Abadinsky, 1981,
p. 2).
The Task Force on Organized crime states that, the core of organized crime activity is the supplying of
illegal goods and services gambling, loan sharking, narcotics and other forms of vice to countless
numbers of citizen customers (Abadinsky, 1981, p. 267). However, the business of organized
frequently consists of activities that are neither services nor goods, instead they are undoubtedly
scrounging. The connection among illicit business and organized crime can take one of three
following forms: first we have the parasitic form, where associates of a criminal organization extract
money from illegal businesspersons by intimidating them with violence (Abadinsky, 1981, p. 267).
The second from is reciprocal: members of a criminal organization require genuine or illegal

The Productivity And Flexibility Of The Labor Market
The efficiency and flexibility of the labor market are critical for ensuring that workers are allocated to
their most effective. In Dubai hires skilled foreign workers mostly from South East Asia to fulfill its
needs. Labor markets must therefore have the flexibility to shift workers from one economic activity
to another. In today s globalized world, technology is increasingly essential for firms to compete and
prosper. The technological readiness measures the agility with which an economy adopts existing
technologies to enhance the productivity of its industries, with specific emphasis on its capacity to
fully leverage information and communication technologies. The size of the market affects
productivity since large markets allow firms to exploit economies of scale. Traditionally, the markets
available to firms have been constrained by national borders. In the era of globalization, international
markets have become a substitute for domestic markets, especially for small countries. There is no
doubt that sophisticated business practices are conducive to higher efficiency in the production of
goods and services. Business sophistication concerns two elements that are intricately linked.
Innovation can emerge from new technological and non technological knowledge. Non technological
innovations are closely related to the know how, skills, and working conditions that are embedded in
organizations. Although all the above said characteristics of competitive advantage sound

A Brief Note On Sociological Theory Development Of African...
Unit 9 DB 1
Appling Sociological Theory Development
Introduction
There have been many career criminals, but most of them have been Caucasian, so I decided to see if
we had any African male or female career criminals, and despite the myth that there are no black serial
killers, there are, but there are very few because, there are not a lot of agencies that keep the statistics
of the number of African American serial killers compared with Caucasians. Based on information
received from a phone call to Sgt. Thomas from the Augusta, Richmond County Sheriff department he
explained to me that the FBI s National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime does not maintain
statistics for serial killers, and they do not have any type of national repository that can keep up let
alone track the race or number of serial killers throughout the U.S.
So, from my source of contact I am incline to believe that the FBIs has never been able to create a
nonspecific profile for a serial killer nor a set physiognomies that someone can examine or look out
for. Moreover, serial killers tend to span all racial groups. There are Asian, white, Hispanic, and
African American serial killers. Basically, the racial diversification of serial killers usually mirrors that
of the overall population.

Personal Discourse Definition
I do not agree with Discourses because to me, it means you have to do what society tells you to do and
you are unable to think for yourself. I believe I have had a lot of personal experience with this. Even
now, as an adult, I still have trouble forming my own opinion without others input because I have been
growing up in a generation that revolves around the internet and we are heavily influenced by social
media. For instance, if many people like Taylor Swift, then so do I. However, when she does one
problematic thing and people judge her for it, then I do too. I feel as if I have to believe what everyone
else believes, I am unable to think for myself at times. On the other hand, when I try to detach myself

Gee states, A Discourse is a sort of identity kit which comes complete with the appropriate costume
and instructions on how to act, talk, and often write, so as to take on a particular social role that others
will recognize. This further proves that individuals are always worried about impressing others and in
order to do that they have to alter their personality plus their exterior so that they fit a certain standard
that makes them more respectable in a way. Speaking of respect, Gee mentions, Other examples of
Discourses include: (enacting) being an American or a Russian, a man or a woman, a member of a
certain socioeconomic class, a factory worker or a boardroom executive, a doctor or a hospital patient,
a teacher, an administrator, or a student... Basically, Gee is advancing toward the concept that being
different is a Discourse because when the two are compared, there is always one person that has a
connotation of being in a higher position of power. This is true in society, the chain of command,
imperialism, and patriarchy. However, I do not think it is too late to change this way of thinking, it can
be accomplished by society having a different outlook on life, a shift in perspective, and educating
children as well as others on topics that we do not hear much about. I hope that in the years to

Suspense In The Liars
The text We Were Liars written by E. Lockhart follows the summers of a group of teenagers,
collectively called The Liars. The narrator of the story, Cadence Sinclair, suffers from an accident on
their island, and loses most of her memory. Throughout the chapters, she pieces together the timeline
and finds out what truly happened the summer of her accident. The story focuses around the theme of
choices and power, and the author pushes the idea that all actions have consequences.
An interesting and important episode in the book was when Cadence discovers that her accident
involved her killing her friends. The Liars decided to set fire to one of the family houses on the island,
attempting to get rid of the family feud over who had power over it. As Cadence was on the ground
floor, the fire grew upwards, and her 3 friends died as the house burnt, and she was the only one able
to escape. To me, this is one of the most interesting scenes in the book, as even after the accident,
Cadence was having conversations and physical contact with them, though in the end, you find out
that they were merely hallucinations brought on from her head injury, or even ghosts. I liked how the
author did this, as she showed only minor hints throughout the book that they weren t alive, and it left
you guessing until the end of the book. The way the author creates a feeling of suspense throughout
the novel because of this left me wanting to keep reading. Cadence remembers the fire at first, but not

more, much faster and are able to figure out how not to make the same mistakes again, then they pass
that knowledge on to others. They develop the mindset that to fail is to learn faster.
Key to Success #4
They have excellent time management skills. Successful online marketing depends on making the
most effective usage of the time you have. The successful Internet marketer maps out a work day that
is the heaviest with necessary tasks to be completed in the morning. That way it opens up the rest of
the day for other important activities like sharing quality time with family and friends.
For those who have to still work a regular job to support themselves while their Internet business takes
off they will make time in to complete 10 minute tasks and longer through out the day, time when they
know they won t be distracted (early in the morning before work, or late at night).
Key to Success #5
They are able to maintain a clear focus. Successful folks in Internet marketing are typically
individuals who give full attention to one activity at a time. If they re up against an activity that can t
be finished in one session, they ll split it up into smaller steps to enable them to focus on one action at
a time so that they can complete each one before starting the next.

She had to save every hard earned dime she could toward her house, her place, with her name on the

no matter what; literally, she left Jamaica and her family to make a better living for them. This also
shows her selfless attitude, her willingness to go without just to see her family prevail; this establishes
credibility with the reader considering they think Millie is not truthful in her plans. Another example
takes place between Millie and the church, they want one tenth of Millie s earnings, but she tells them
that money is all she has to live on, and God has spoken to her in a dream; Millicent, you are a hard
working girl. Follow me. Follow the light to your new house (Thompson 13). In other words, this
passage is not only persuasion to the reader, but the church as well; this is because God provided proof
in the dream. Now, not only does she believe in her ambition, but God reassures her. Ultimately,
Thompson definitely leaves an imprint in the reader s mind that Millie is about her business and
values her relationship with her family so much that she is willing to do whatever it takes to see them
prevail.
Secondly, following ethos is the appeal of pathos. Millie has endured more suffering than anyone in

In the ghost story film The Others , an unnerving atmosphere is set straight away. It begins with
cheerful, but strange music, and then a woman is shown screaming, making you wonder what has just
occurred.
This is the perfect beginning for a novel under the ghost story genre.
Further on into the film, we learn that the children who live in the house are ultra sensitive to any
bright light. This adds to the strangeness of the story, possibly scaring the viewer and making them
believe that the characters are quite strange.
The majority of all ghost stories are set in the winter months because the weather is bad and when it is
like this, bad things usually happen. The main character usually gets themselves into a spot of bother
due to either the torrential rain, snow or a storm. It is highly unlikely for a ghost story to be set in
sunny or cheerful surroundings. It is the dark, dismal and eerie atmosphere that adds to the scariness.
In both The Others and Susan Hill s The Woman in Black, death is a key factor in the story line. Dying
is always used because if somebody had not died, there would be no ghost to haunt the major
character in the novel. In The Woman in Black , narrator and main character Arthur
Kipps is constantly haunted by the sound of a pony and trap being pulled under a marsh by quicksand.

An Analytical Model Of Contagion
cite{gai} developed an analytical model of contagion in financial networks with arbitrary structure
which distinguishes the probability of contagious default from its potential spread using statistical
techniques from the literature on complex networks citep[see][]{stro} into a financial system setting.
Their paper finds that although contagion risk is low, the effects can be extremely widespread.
In the financial network literature, cite{alleng} provide microeconomic foundations for financial
contagion. Using a liquidity preference model in which a shock to one part of the economy can spread
to other parts and potentially lead to an economy wide financial crisis, they find evidence connectivity
and incompleteness are conductive of contagion. Similarly, cite{freix} analyse the stability of the
banking system when one bank becomes insolvent, the role of the central bank and the effect on
market discipline. They use a model of payment flows similar to cite{dd} and find that connectedness
boosts resilience of the system but the too big to fail policy has moral hazard implications when the
central bank intervenes to allow an insolvent bank to continue operating. On the other hand, cite{bru}
model contagion in the interbank deposit market, using the return on the gambling asset as the
mechanism of contagion in this network. They find greater connectivity increases contagion risk

Being blind manifest itself in a lot of ways. The most harmful type of this condition may be figurative
blindness of one s own situations and ignorance towards the feelings of others. Within Raymond

obvious. The narrator faces many issues as well as the turn around experienced at the culmination of
the tale are the main ideas for the theme of this story; and these ideas aid the narrator in eventually
develop the character transformation by simply regarding the literal blind man in a positive light.
The narrators statement at the very beginning of the story explains his own lack of knowledge about
physical blindness. His lack of knowledge relating to the visitor s disability is not deniable, yet he
makes it very clear that he is aware of his ignorance, saying that he was not happy about his visit. He
was no one I knew. And his being blind bothered me. My idea of blindness came from the movies. In
the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed. Sometimes seeing eye dogs led them. A blind

attitude about Robert, the house guest, and other blind people in general at the onset of the story,
giving the narrator an instant feeling of exactly who the narrator and even what he may turn out to be.

  • 4. The Invention Of Soviet Montage Film The Soviets realized that through editing, two shots could provoke an emotion or idea that was not originally present in either of them. Eisenstein described it perfectly: Everyone who has had in his hands a piece of film to be edited knows by experience how neutral it remains, even though a part of a planned sequence, until it is joined with another piece, when it suddenly acquires and conveys a sharper and quite different meaning than that planned for it at the time of filming (Giannetti 163). The invention of Soviet montage editing allowed for filmmakers to develop a new power in which they could psychologically manipulate audiences. Earlier studies of montage cinema have solely focused on its visual and technical properties; however, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once the 1917 revolution began, it was difficult to get access to film stock. As a result, filmmakers learned the art of filmmaking through experimentation with found footage, specifically by observing what would happen when combining this found footage together in various ways. The revolution resulted in an increased demand for political propaganda, and certain revolutionaries such as Vladimir Lenin (founder of the Russian Communist Party and leader of the Bolshevik Revolution) insisted that the best way to communicate revolutionary ideas was through film. In 1922 Lenin stated, Of all the arts, for us the cinema is the most important (Film Art 477). Lenin saw film as the ideal tool for education and thus encouraged the documentary as well as propaganda style of filmmaking. Eisenstein and Vertov detested the bourgeois continuity style of filmmaking and deemed it a false reality. Instead, they supported the Marxist system that focused on the conflict of political ideologies. Eisenstein was adamant about using cinema as a way to arouse emotions and urge civilians to support the revolution. Eisenstein used the technique of intellectual montage where he would combine images and then contrast them (Barrance 2015). • 5. Freudian Analysis Of Zuñi Tale Freudian Analysis of Zuñi Tale Sigmund Freud, the famed Austrian neurologist, pioneered the process of psychoanalysis, which was intended to be a clinical method to treat neurosis and other forms of psychopathology. However, it has also found use in analyzing stories, dreams, and myths. Freud s method of developing latent thoughts through manifest content will be demonstrated in the following paper, which focuses on a Zuñi folktale called The Ugly Wild Boy Who Drove the Bear Away from South Eastern Mesa. The story is about a young boy who lives with his grandmother near a village called K iákime. This boy is unlike others in that he is frightfully ugly ; with scars all over his body, he suffers from distorted facial features and abnormal growths on his head. One season it rains heavily in the Southeastern Mesa near K iákime, bringing forth fresh growth like nuts from piñon trees, fruit from datilas, and seeds from the gray grass and redtop. However, the villagers are unable to retrieve them because an old, frightening bear claims the territory for himself, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Raining is a phallic symbol with relation to urination, and in the context of the story, it also brings forth fertility. Freud s works explain fruits as a symbol of breasts, in line with the concept of fertility. Whether they stand for fertility or specifically breasts, the datila fruit, piñon nuts, and grass seed represent desirable items to the boy and the villagers. Unfortunately, the bear prevents the village from gathering the fruit, which drives the story s main conflict. A towering, violent animal, the bear is the principle foe of the boy, and further affirms the notion of the simpleton hero story; in comparison, the boy is weak, yet he can defy all odds and defeat a more powerful enemy. Most of them can almost fall under the same idea. The main theme for the novel is how excessive greed can have unintended consequences. The main character, Griffin, goes mad with the power of being invisible. It gets to the point that he is not even trying to just stay hidden anymore, he is just trying to cause as much mayhem in the country as possible. One of the first instances of greed is when he starts to take advantage of Mrs. Hall, the woman who owns the Coach Horses Inn. Mrs. Hall mainly feels bad for him at first because she thinks he is very hurt or injured in some sort of way due to him wrapping his head up. Griffin keeps ... • 8. Gang Subcultures Of Gangs Hence, according to differential opportunity theory, if one is to create gang subcultures of criminal, conflict, and retreatist; then there must be opportunity, or lack thereof to for one to participate in the illegitimate structure, which would require the pre existence of gangs (Cloward Ohlin, 1960 in Williams McShane, 2014, pg. 99 100). It should be noted that Curry and Spergel (1992) found that the [prior] presence of gang members both males and females are also significant estimators for one to become involved in a gang (pg. 284). Furthermore, the two strongest factors for individuals to become involved in gangs was if a family member was already involved in a gang, or being near drug distributors (Curry Spergel, 1992, pg. 284). Thus, if an individual were to join a gang it is probable that there: is a prior presence of gangs in their neighbourhood, they have a family member that is in gang, or the individual is near drug distributors, all of whom who would likely mentor the individual (Curry Spergel, 1992, pg. 284). While this explains criminal gangs, it does not state if retreatist or conflict gangs exist. Nevertheless, according to Klien and Maxson (2006), one consequence of gang participation is drug abuse (retreatist) (as cited in Pitts, 2008, pg. 27). In terms of conflict gangs, Yablonsky (1962) asserts that gang members are sociopaths, bent upon violence (as cited in Pitts, 2008, pg. 26); however, Christopher Schreck, Jean McGloin, and David Kirk (2009) indicate otherwise, as they state that conflict subcultures are not solely defined by violence (pg. 789). Additionally, differential opportunity theory states that a lower class individual will only have access to illegitimate opportunities, as their SES deprives them of the chance to participate in the legitimate avenues (Williams McShane, 2014, pg. 99). As stated previously, gang members tend to be poor and racial minorities (Curry Spergel, 1988, pg. 399); in turn, having access to legitimate opportunities is unlikely due to economic deprivation. Therefore, for gang members, after they fail or do not have an opportunity to succeed through legitimate avenues such as employment and education, they resort to illegitimate means to ... It is commonly identified by economist and political philosophers as a system in which the means of production are privately owned and operated in the free market in exchange for a profit (Galbraith, 1952). The economical/social system determines the structure of production, the allocation of inputs and outputs, and consumption of goods. Capitalism remains popular in America because it values freedom, much like the people in our country. In a regulated environment, most of the cost increases were passed along to consumers under a fixed rate of return based pricing scheme. After deregulation, the incumbent carriers felt the most pain, and the floodgates had opened for newer more nimble carriers with lower cost structures to compete head on with the established airlines. Abstract: The purpose of this experiment is to use UV/Visible Spectrophotometer to determine the concentration on three unknown samples of iodine (A, B and C), this is done by measuring the absorbance of different known concentration of iodine using a UV/Visible Spectrophotometer and plotting a calibration curve of Absorbance Vs Concentration (as shown in Fig 4). This is used to find the concentration of the unknown samples as the absorbance was measured using a UV Spectrophotometer. When a light set at a specific wavelength enters the cuvette which contains the solution that need to be tested, some of the incident light (I0) is absorbed by the solution, and the rest of the light which leaves the solution (the transmitted light I) is detected, the amount of light absorbed depends on the concentration of the solution. The amount of light that goes into the solution and the amount of light that leaves the solution gives a value of the absorbance (A) of the solution which can be calculated by using the equation: (A= log (I/I0)). This equation assumes that all the incident light is either transmitted or absorbed, therefore, reflection or scattering are insignificant. The amount of light absorbed by a substance is directly proportional to the concentration of the substance (As the concentration increases, the absorbance also increases provided that the wavelength is constant). The Operational Safety Management System INTRODUCTION Any well designed safety program or system is only as effective as the day to day ability of everyone in the organisation to rigorously follow procedures correctly and safely every time. (Angiullo in Hopkins, 2009: p.147) This statement is based on organisational discipline or each worker as having the self restraint to perform every task required. Angiullo supports the statement by discussing the operational safety management system in three core areas: leadership characteristics; well defined and followed management processes; and maintenance of high standards. Organisations only fully conform to organisational discipline when these three areas are effectively implemented within the organisation. (Angiullo in Hopkins, 2009). This essay will discuss why it is believed to be an utopian statement by comparing the core areas against the AS/NZ 4801:2001 Occupational health and safety management systems specification with guidance for use and supporting literature. According to US Legal, government corruption is when government leaders abuse their political power to extract and accumulate for private enrichment (US Legal, Inc.)[1]. Technically, this is a bad thing because when government leaders use their power for their benefit, it does not necessarily mean that it is beneficial to the public and the society. To prove or disprove this argument, I decided to run an econometric analysis to see whether government corruption hinders or helps economic development. Method: There were three datasets I used for this paper. The first and the main dataset was the dataset that contained the data on government corruption, which came from the Worldwide Governance Indicators excel file posted on World Bank. From this dataset, I pulled out one important variable called Corruption, which is a measure of the government performance. It ranges from 2.5 (bad government performance/corrupted) to 2.5(good government performance/not corrupted). We need to be careful when interpreting this variable because even though this is a corruption measure, higher positive value actually means the government is doing better and less corrupted. The second dataset I used was Penn World Table version 9.0[3]. These strong funding resources provide them with the opportunity to offer more generous financial aid packages. The disadvantages for a HBCU is that they don t have these large endowments, which explains why there are unable to offer the scholarships or the grants needed to fund a student s education. It is an ongoing criminal enterprise that is wisely working to generate profit engaging in illegal activities depending on demand, where its presence is preserve through force, intimidations, and corruption. According to the FBI, organized crime is basically a group of transnational, national, or local alliances of highly centralized enterprises run by crooks who make illicit profit or money through illegal and often violent activities (Abadinsky, 1981, p. 2). The Task Force on Organized crime states that, the core of organized crime activity is the supplying of illegal goods and services gambling, loan sharking, narcotics and other forms of vice to countless numbers of citizen customers (Abadinsky, 1981, p. 267). However, the business of organized frequently consists of activities that are neither services nor goods, instead they are undoubtedly scrounging. The connection among illicit business and organized crime can take one of three following forms: first we have the parasitic form, where associates of a criminal organization extract money from illegal businesspersons by intimidating them with violence (Abadinsky, 1981, p. 267). In today s globalized world, technology is increasingly essential for firms to compete and prosper. The technological readiness measures the agility with which an economy adopts existing technologies to enhance the productivity of its industries, with specific emphasis on its capacity to fully leverage information and communication technologies. The size of the market affects productivity since large markets allow firms to exploit economies of scale. Traditionally, the markets available to firms have been constrained by national borders. In the era of globalization, international markets have become a substitute for domestic markets, especially for small countries. There is no doubt that sophisticated business practices are conducive to higher efficiency in the production of goods and services. • 30. A Brief Note On Sociological Theory Development Of African... Unit 9 DB 1 Appling Sociological Theory Development Introduction There have been many career criminals, but most of them have been Caucasian, so I decided to see if we had any African male or female career criminals, and despite the myth that there are no black serial killers, there are, but there are very few because, there are not a lot of agencies that keep the statistics of the number of African American serial killers compared with Caucasians. Based on information received from a phone call to Sgt. Thomas from the Augusta, Richmond County Sheriff department he explained to me that the FBI s National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime does not maintain statistics for serial killers, and they do not have any type of national repository that can keep up let alone track the race or number of serial killers throughout the U.S. So, from my source of contact I am incline to believe that the FBIs has never been able to create a nonspecific profile for a serial killer nor a set physiognomies that someone can examine or look out for. Moreover, serial killers tend to span all racial groups. There are Asian, white, Hispanic, and African American serial killers. Basically, the racial diversification of serial killers usually mirrors that of the overall population. I believe I have had a lot of personal experience with this. Even now, as an adult, I still have trouble forming my own opinion without others input because I have been growing up in a generation that revolves around the internet and we are heavily influenced by social media. For instance, if many people like Taylor Swift, then so do I. However, when she does one problematic thing and people judge her for it, then I do too. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gee states, A Discourse is a sort of identity kit which comes complete with the appropriate costume and instructions on how to act, talk, and often write, so as to take on a particular social role that others will recognize. This further proves that individuals are always worried about impressing others and in order to do that they have to alter their personality plus their exterior so that they fit a certain standard that makes them more respectable in a way. Speaking of respect, Gee mentions, Other examples of Discourses include: (enacting) being an American or a Russian, a man or a woman, a member of a certain socioeconomic class, a factory worker or a boardroom executive, a doctor or a hospital patient, a teacher, an administrator, or a student... Basically, Gee is advancing toward the concept that being different is a Discourse because when the two are compared, there is always one person that has a connotation of being in a higher position of power. This is true in society, the chain of command, imperialism, and patriarchy. However, I do not think it is too late to change this way of thinking, it can be accomplished by society having a different outlook on life, a shift in perspective, and educating children as well as others on topics that we do not hear much about. • 32. Suspense In The Liars The text We Were Liars written by E. Lockhart follows the summers of a group of teenagers, collectively called The Liars. The narrator of the story, Cadence Sinclair, suffers from an accident on their island, and loses most of her memory. Throughout the chapters, she pieces together the timeline and finds out what truly happened the summer of her accident. The story focuses around the theme of choices and power, and the author pushes the idea that all actions have consequences. An interesting and important episode in the book was when Cadence discovers that her accident involved her killing her friends. The Liars decided to set fire to one of the family houses on the island, attempting to get rid of the family feud over who had power over it. As Cadence was on the ground floor, the fire grew upwards, and her 3 friends died as the house burnt, and she was the only one able to escape. To me, this is one of the most interesting scenes in the book, as even after the accident, Cadence was having conversations and physical contact with them, though in the end, you find out that they were merely hallucinations brought on from her head injury, or even ghosts. I liked how the author did this, as she showed only minor hints throughout the book that they weren t alive, and it left you guessing until the end of the book. The way the author creates a feeling of suspense throughout the novel because of this left me wanting to keep reading. Cadence remembers the fire at first, but not her ... This also shows her selfless attitude, her willingness to go without just to see her family prevail; this establishes credibility with the reader considering they think Millie is not truthful in her plans. Another example takes place between Millie and the church, they want one tenth of Millie s earnings, but she tells them that money is all she has to live on, and God has spoken to her in a dream; Millicent, you are a hard working girl. Ultimately, Thompson definitely leaves an imprint in the reader s mind that Millie is about her business and values her relationship with her family so much that she is willing to do whatever it takes to see them prevail. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the ghost story film The Others , an unnerving atmosphere is set straight away. It begins with cheerful, but strange music, and then a woman is shown screaming, making you wonder what has just occurred. This is the perfect beginning for a novel under the ghost story genre. Further on into the film, we learn that the children who live in the house are ultra sensitive to any bright light. This adds to the strangeness of the story, possibly scaring the viewer and making them believe that the characters are quite strange. The majority of all ghost stories are set in the winter months because the weather is bad and when it is like this, bad things usually happen. The main character usually gets themselves into a spot of bother due to either the torrential rain, snow or a storm. It is highly unlikely for a ghost story to be set in sunny or cheerful surroundings. It is the dark, dismal and eerie atmosphere that adds to the scariness. In both The Others and Susan Hill s The Woman in Black, death is a key factor in the story line. Dying is always used because if somebody had not died, there would be no ghost to haunt the major character in the novel.
