The Importance Of Sanitation In Armall
Lack of solid waste collection and poor drainage combined with lack of safe pit latrines brings up poor
hygiene conditions in Armall. Therefore, the inadequate sanitation and hygiene practices in Armall
resulted in morbidity and mortality due to endemic infections, which cause diarrhoea and other
illnesses. Sanitation in Armall was severely neglected by both the service utility and the households
because some people in Armall were using open defecation, others used plastic bags as toilets and
others did the defecation in streets. Lack of water and sanitation in Armall has a serious effect on the
people s health, which has also created poverty to most households. As a nation, what should be born
in our minds is that poor environmental health

Why Public Transportation
Why Public Transportation Is So Limited in the United States by Daniel Faris, is an article published
on Truth Out.org, a nonprofit journalism website. Daniel Faris is a graduate from Susquehanna
University, where he studied journalism and business, and writes about politics, technology, and
progressive music in his free time. His article on public transportation exposes, what he believes to be,
some of the major flaws behind the American public transportation system. Throughout this article
Faris uses rhetorical appeals to his advantage. Faris s effectiveness using pathos, logos, and ethos lead
to his article having a fairly solid argument with minimal errors. Faris starts off his article by
discussing his recent trip to Baltimore and his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He mentions the possibility of autonomous vehicles helping America s problem, but in the end he
circles back around to his Baltimore experience. Since the Baltimore public transportation system was
previously mentioned, readers experience a stronger sense of pathos when he mentions that the system
is over 11 million dollars in debt, and facing uncertainty. He continues with the trend of pathos when
describing the current situation of America s public transportation as being more than a little grim, but
in the end he reaffirms that he truly wants to see improvement; Here s hoping our priorities change
sometime soon. Through his article, Why Public Transportation Is So Limited in the United States ,
Daniel Faris uses a strong mixture of rhetorical appeals, leaning mostly toward logos. With his use of
these, he was able to build an overall solid argument. His writing could come off a bit brash at times,
but he always followed those moment with pathos to draw the reader back in. Overall, Faris wrote an
excellent, professional article that successfully argued his point without offending anyone with an

Chronic Injuries Robbed Ken Griffey Jr. of Homerun King...
He hit 600 home runs (5th most all time), won 10 gold gloves, and made 13 All Star Games. In almost
150 years baseball history, only the great Willie Mays can match Ken Griffey Jr. in these statistical
categories. However, despite these extraordinary stats, Ken Griffey Jr. may be the ultimate What
Could Have Been player. An incredibly promising career was derailed in the latter half by chronic
injuries that robbed him of hundreds of games. If not for these injuries, Griffey was well on his way to
becoming the Home Run King (Stark, 2010) and possibly the greatest player ever. Despite these
setbacks, Griffey is still revered as one of the greatest and most popular MLB players ever. The savior

He gained endorsements with Pizza Hut and General Mills, and had his own Nintendo video game and
Nike shoe line. He also appeared in many TV shows such as The Simpsons and The Fresh Prince of
Bel Air, as well as movies, and wrote his own autobiography (Ferguson, 2011). His 1989 rookie card
remains the most popular baseball card ever. During the prime of his career in the late 1990s, he was
easily the most popular baseball player and possibly even most popular athlete in the world.
Nowhere in the country is he more popular than in Seattle, where he is considered the savior of
baseball in the city. In the 1980s, the Mariners were a historically moribund franchise playing in the
crumbling Kingdome. Prior to his arrival, the Mariners had been seriously considering a move to
Washington DC, but that all changed once Griffey came (Fort, 2000, p. 313). His exciting style of play
immediately attracted fans and attention to the franchise (Caple, 2010). In 1995, Griffey led a miracle
rally to the Mariners first playoff appearance in decades (Reader, 2010), and capped the season by
scoring the game winning run to defeat the New York Yankees in the first round (Schaefer, 2003, p.6).
His rise rejuvenated baseball and the city in general, leading the building of the new stadium, Safeco
Field, dubbed the House That Griffey Built . Griffey s most enduring legacy, however, was being one
of the few star players who were not involved in

designate a time and place for people to sign up for the project. Families will be selected for the
project on a first come first served basis. A full debriefing to the families on guidelines and
stipulations set out by the funding NGO will be acknowledged and agreed upon before the allocation
of plots. NGO s will ensure that all families partaking in the project are fully aware of their
obligations, rights and any penalties that may arise from breaching the procedures or misuse of
allotments. The next step is to gather the funds, equipment and resources, as specified by families,
which need to be distributed to start this project. All equipment must be checked for health and safety
issues and its suitability for the purpose intended. Routine reviews of plots and equipment must be
carried out at regular intervals to ensure that guidelines are being adhered to and plots are not being
misused or wasted. Workshops will be set up to teach and demonstrate how to grow fruit and
vegetables, as well as address solutions to any adverse situations that may arise whilst growing food.
After the first initial set of workshops at the start of the project access to information in the form of
booklets should be given to all plot holders. Workshops should not be needed after the initial start up
period as the other allotment holders can help guide and advise new plot holders. Transport will also
need to be arranged for travelling between the Shatila camp site and the allotments on a

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Content Management System
CMS or content management system is a congregation of various types of tools applied on the internet
to construct, create and manage online content. CMS is a software installed on the web server which
helps in publishing, managing, storing and archiving various types of content like videos, audios,
blogs, articles, press releases, presentations and any other type of content on the internet without
storing it on a computer. This allows the clients to make any changes they want to the content without
uploading every time. CMS hosting also allows the clients to simply login and access their website to
make additions, alterations and delete any content they want. These changes are instantly updated on
the website though the client can set a timeframe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The software keeps the articles and web design separate which gives the content contributors to freely
make their contributions without bothering about the web design having to be updated in every page.
The CMS software can update menus and links between pages on the new content that is created by
the various contributors and it does not create any obstruction to the performance while the pages are
being recreated.
There are many CMS hosting platforms and the customers have to keep a few considerations in mind
when selecting a CMS.
The first point is the type of website that is being built. The website could be a blog, commercial or an
entertainment site. It could be news or a forum or an educational portal. The choices are many and
there are possibilities of a website serving dual purpose of promoting the company as a business
industry and secondly as an e commerce platform. Yet another point the client has to consider is the
purpose of their website and whether CMS hosting is required or not. Thirdly it is better to check if
the CMS has a good community support. There are many free open source CMS that have very good
support through forums and

Analysis Of Kanye West s Song All Falls Down
The song I have chosen to talk about is one of my favorite songs ever and it s called All Falls Down
by Kanye West. The College Dropout came out in 2004 and was Kanye Wests debut album as a music
artist. This song was his third single off the album. As shown from Barbaric Poetries blog, Tia states
that Kanye s message in this song is that, when you live life to impress others and cover up your
insecurities, you will never be satisfied, thus all will seem to fall down (http://barbaricpoetries.
blogspot.com/2012/04/and it all falls down.html). The catchy melody given in the beginning of the
song is what caught everyone s ears when it first came out. Kanye produced this song in 2004 where
he used very simple instruments to attract his fans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

off what her parents wants for her and not for herself. Even if you wanted to become successful in life
there has to be consequences you have to take in order to become prosperous. In the life of a college
student you find that the student is the one who has to take penalties in order to get that degree.
Making time for yourself to succeed is mandatory for you to keep in your mind at all times. Since
Kanye named his album The College Dropout , he frequently inquiries the significance of going to
college. The title of his debut album actually tells us a story of everything that he was going through at
the time. Several individuals go to college because it s a safe way to partake if you don t have
anything planned after you have graduated from high school. Great parents will tell their children to
go to college because it would be a backup plan if they didn t do anything else with their career. If
plan A doesn t work, you always have plan B to back you up right after. A lot of people will most
likely assume they ll get a very nice profession after college but it usually doesn t end up that way.
People just end up working with jobs that have nothing to do with their careers because it would be so
hard to find one with their studies and some people just don t have a job right after. Nothing is
promised after you finished college unless you work your butt off. As he states in his lyrics That major
that she majored in don t make no money, but she won t drop out, her parents will look at her funny.

Compare And Contrast The Last Judgement And The Sistine...
Both of the paintings by Michelangelo are excellent examples of Renaissance era art. These two
paintings are the Last Judgment and the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The ceiling was worked on from 1508
to 1512 and shows many themes common throughout Renaissance art. One of the most prominent is
the stunning realism in both pieces. Despite there being hundreds of figures is both pieces each is
extremely realistic. There s a huge stress on the human figure in this painting and they look as though
they could be real people. There s also a fair amount of perspective, although this isn t one of the most
important parts of the paintings.
Another interesting motif is the international influence in the paintings. Even though the paintings
have extremely Catholic origins they have some elements of other cultures. One of the biggest ways
this is shown is in the sibyls that are between some of the scenes. These sibyls have origins from
Africa, Asia, Greece, and Ionia. These paintings also show departure from traditional Catholic values
in some of the symbolism the paintings show. In the center of the ceiling there is a painting of man
and God, yet God is painted inside the shape of the human brain. In ... Show more content on

painting there are four distinct characters. Each has a different expression that shows how they are
feeling. There is also more detail in the faces then in any other parts of the painting. Another technique
it demonstrates is heightened realism. Whereas before the Renaissance the figures may have been
painted simply and in only enough detail to get the general idea across, these figures are shown more
realistically. Lastly there is the technique of perspective as shown in the background of the painting.

The Beliefs Of Faith In Martin Luther s The Freedom Of God
When you hear the word faith, what comes to your mind? Do you think of religion, purpose, or your
belief in something?
What is faith? Is it a feeling, a thought, or a concept? As Martin Luther said in his book Freedom of a
Christian, faith is God s work in us, that changes us and gives new birth from God. When one thinks
of faith, they maybe think about their personal relationship with God and the unconditional love He
has. He who through faith is righteous shall live. The Word of God cannot be interpreted by any works
but only by faith. Martin Luther had stated that, It is clear that, as the soul needs only the Word of God
for its life and righteousness, so it is justified by faith alone and not any works. (Janz, A Reformation
Reader, pg 109)
There are three powers or virtues of faith that Martin Luther describes. Firstly, justification through
faith alone, which means we are free from the law and works as regards our justification and salvation.
Secondly, unity of man and Christ like bride to bridegroom which means faith unites the soul to
Christ, and lastly, the ability to ascribe to [God] truthfulness, righteousness, and whatever else should
be ascribed to one who is trusted. (Luther, The Freedom of a Christian, p. 103)
The first proposition of the three powers of faith is, Every Christian is by faith so exalted above all
things that, in spiritual power, he is completely lord of all things, so that nothing whatever can do him
any hurt; yea, all things are

The Effects Of Sporting Events On Soccer 2010
The stadium was shaking with the thunderous cheers of fans supporting their countries. The
excitement grew as coaches gave last minute instructions to their players. The kick off of the 1966
World Cup, held in England, in which Germany versed England, was moments away. The whistle
blew and the match was on. The first ninety minutes of the match were an exciting battle and the game
ended in a 0 0 score; on to overtime! According to an article written Zoe Doherty During the final,
with eleven minutes gone in extra time, Alan Ball crossed to George Hurst whose subsequent shot
cannoned off the underside of the goal and down either just on or over the goal line. The goal was
controversially allowed, and its validity is still questioned to this day. (Goal line technology in soccer
2010) Controversy has always played a major role in the officiating of sporting events since the
official s decisions are based upon their judgments and observations. Maybe in 1966 that had to be the
case, but today, thanks to modern technology, that s not so. Rather than relying solely on their personal
observations to determine a call, soccer officials are now being assisted by goal line technology, a tool
to assist them making their official rulings during a game. According to the Fédération Internationale

of soccer, goal line technology is, A technical means of instantly determining

To Kill a Mockingbird Growing Up
To Kill a Mockingbird Jem acts maturely
The novel To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee is about a young girl named Scout and her brother,
Jem, growing up in the small, southern town of Maycomb, Alabama. Scout and Jem live with their
older father, Atticus, and spend their summers playing with their friend, Dill. They have many
neighbors, and one is an older woman named Mrs. Dubose. As the siblings grow older, they begin to
drift apart and new disagreements begin. Yet, as Jem begins change, he starts to think more maturely
about feuds with his sister and opinions towards his neighbors. For example, in the tire incident, Jem

very hurt by what Mrs. Dubose had said about his father. To Jem, Atticus seems feeble and old, so,
when threatened, Jem feels it is his responsibility to protect him. In the book, when Mrs. Dubose talks
about Atticus, Jem just ignores her and walks away, but finally he decides to get revenge. He does this

the tire and flower incidents, for example. He would later go on to repair the flowerbed he destroyed,
and take greater care to protect Scout. Through his actions, we can see Jem develop a sense of morals
and responsibility that would prove to be a lifesaver.

The Australian criminal justice system approaches young offenders through unique strategies to
address the challenges of dealing with juvenile offending. Even though young offenders commit a
higher percentage of crime compared to adults, young offenders also have the highest likelihood to be

percentage due to the different rights children have.

Ever since Canada suffered a recession (temporary economic decline due to the reduced industrial and

hard to find permanent jobs. Temporary work growth has grown three times faster than permanent
employment between 2009 and 2012, and most of the temporary work growth has occurred within the
young people. Positively, being in temporary work can lead to permanent work and can make one

Innate Response Essay
The immune system is composed of two parts firstly the innate system and secondly the adaptive
system. The innate response is the first line of defence and relies on pattern recognition receptors
(PRRs) to recognise specific pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and provide a rapid
response to the recognised pathogen. This system also has the complement system and phagocytic
cells as its disposal. Pathogens expresses PAMPs which activate antigen presenting cells (APC), such
as dendritic cells (DC), through ligation of PRR (e.g. Toll like receptors) found on the APC surface.
The adaptive immune system, is the specific response against the pathogens. This response begins

DC are crucial in pathogen recognition and initiating specific immune responses to destroy pathogens.
DC phagocytose a diverse selection of antigens and present them to cells as peptides bound to MHC
I/II products.
DCs can be immature or mature, immature DCs are found in tissues throughout the body allowing
them to monitor the surrounding environment for pathogens and can provide a rapid response to any
foreign bodies. DCs become mature when they receive a danger signal through PRRs, during the
maturation process the cells T cell stimulating capacity will increase, it will also increase in size
allowing an increase in levels of cell surface antigens (e.g. MHC class I/II and CD40) which is
important in T cell activation.
DCs will uptake the antigen causing inflammatory cytokines production (e.g. IL 2, INFµ, TNFα) and
chemokines allowing the antigen loaded DC to migrate to lymphoid organs. Once there the naïve T
cells have; the antigen that stimulated specific TCRs and polarising factors that determine which T cell

as exhibiting a nonlinear relationship between voltage and current. Such nonlinear relationships can
lead to several forms of distortion as summarized below: * A periodic steady state exists and the

Industrial Advantage And Disadvantage Of Dc Motor
Introduction D.C Motor is used for variable speed operation because in dc motor torque and flux that
can be control independently and that is achieved by armature and field current control respectively.
D.C motor has many advantages delivering high starting torque, ease of control and non linear
performance. But due to certain disadvantage of dc machine such as mechanical commutator and
brush holder required time to time maintenance [1] .So cost of the drive system is increases. But now
D.C Motor is less used in industrial applications. Because of low cost, better performance and the
requirement of maintenance is less as compared to D.C Motor it make the asynchronous motor
advantageous in many industrial applications. SCIM are most widely used than all the rest of the
electric motor as they have all the advantages of A.C Motors and are cheaper in cost as compared to
slip ring induction motor. Because of absence of slip rings, brush maintenance duration and cost
associated with the wear and tear of brush are minimized. Because of these advantages, the induction
motor is used in element of most of the electrical drive system for all the conditions like starting,
braking, change in speed and speed reversal. To achieve the maximum efficiency of the induction
motor drive, so many techniques are developed in the last few years. Now a day s high switching
frequency converters are used for changing the frequency, phase and amplitude of the input to an A.C.

Pt1420 Unit 6 Assignment
Describe what you did.
This week we went a little bit more into the actual process of constructing an inverted index and how
to implement the handling of misspellings, the accuracy of retrievals based on context, and the
structures of resulting indexes for the purpose of searching them. For the discussion assignment, I
needed to cover the differences between BSBI and SPIMI. For our programming assignment, we
needed to make some alterations to a SPIMI python program to create an index and list of documents.
Describe your reactions to what you did.
I found everything that we covered this week very interesting. While I appreciated the differences
between a BSBI and SPIMI, I m a little confused as to why you would use a BSBI except in situations
where there are some very specific hardware ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I am feeling pretty good about the class still. A lot of the techniques we are learning about for
efficient, accurate, and helpful searching of a corpus I find very interesting. I need to take some more
time to review the indexer Python code we were supplied so I feel completely comfortable with how it
is achieving the indexing.
Describe what you learned.
Particularly the handling of misspelled search terms or wildcard items was the thing that I feel like I
really took away from this week. Certainly, the index creation techniques were learned but I think that
to really strongly grasp those I just need to get more hands on experience with their implementation.
The things I learned about for managing search terms I feel like I could, at least conceptually,
immediately apply.
What surprised me or caused me to wonder?
I found the technique of the permuterm indexing especially of note. While it seems like it results in a
massive index it was interesting to think of how that could be applied along with other ideas to
mitigate human imperfections for searches.
What happened that felt particularly challenging? Why was it challenging to

District 9 Film Analysis
For those who have not watched the film District 9, here is a quick summary of the movie. In 1982,
aliens arrive on Earth, not to conquer or give aid, but to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated
from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi National
United, which is not concerned with the aliens welfare but will do anything to master their advanced
technology. When a company field agent Wikus contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his
DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9. The film was directed by Neill Blomkamp and
starred Sharlto Copley(Wikus). It begins as a documentary style investigation and then as the film
continues it becomes more conventional and character driven following Wikus and his transformation
into a Prawn. The film s main themes are Xenophobia and Segregation. Xenophobia is characterized
by a negative attitude towards foreigners, a dislike, a fear, or a hatred. Segregation as most people
know is a separation of people or objects from others. When picking a critical approach to use for this
essay two stuck out to me, Biographical and Mimetic.
I chose biographical criticism to start with because I wanted to learn more about director Neill
Blomkamp. I read many articles, biographies and interviews about the film producer. This quote is
from an interview I found very informing. District 9 explores the issue of segregation and xenophobia.

Essay on Ethical Issues in Secured Communications
Ethical Issues in Secured Communications
1. Introduction
The outstanding growth of network technologies in the past decade have contributed to millions of
new applications and industries. Literally millions of companies around the world were created to
serve this huge growth. Even though many of those companies did not survive until the present time,
most of the applications did survive and they are still widely used among consumers of all ages,
cultures, and backgrounds.
Most of the widely used applications are not secured. I will define what is meant by a secured
communication later in the paper. However, this paper is more concerned in the way people use these
applications in terms of identity. Many applications allow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

2.1 Security Background
2.1.1 Secured Communications
Security and privacy are not new concepts. At 400 BC the Greeks used a transposition cipher.
Individual letters were written on a long thin sheet of paper and then wrapped around a cylinder. The
diameter of the cylinder was the key to find out the original letter. In this context, I find it necessary to
give some definitions of related vocabulary in this field.
Plain text or PT is the original message that we need to send. Usually we do not want others to be able
to know our original message.
Cipher text or CT is the encrypted plain text which is not readable for others.
Encryption is the process of changing a secret message (plain text) into a disguised one (cipher text).
Decryption is the process of changing the Cipher text back to the original Plain text.
Cryptography (literally means secret writing) is the science encompassing the principles and methods
of transforming a PT message into a CT one, and then retransforming that message back to its original
form.
cryptanalysis the study of principles and methods of transforming a CT message back into a PT
message without knowledge of the key. Also called code breaking
cryptology both cryptography and cryptanalysis
We encrypt the PT to get the CT and then send it on a communication channel. The channel

The Resurgence Of The Ku Klux Klan
The goal of this investigation is to delve into the question of: to what extent was the resurgence of the
Ku Klux Klan during the 1920s a reflection of societal change? In order to assess this question from
multiple perspectives on the topic, research is needed to further look into the Klan s motives both prior
to their revival as well as after. Events in the 1870s, when the Klan ended, as well as events in the
1920s, when the klan was reborn, will be considered in this investigation in order to make connections
between the KKK and why their revival in the 1920s reflected societal change. Among these events
include the end of Reconstruction, the Progressive Era, increase of immigration to the United States,
as well as the red scare of communism.
Summary of Evidence

Analysis Of The Story Cathedral
Cathedral The story Cathedral demonstrates that lack of sight does not necessarily prevent one from
perceiving things as they are, or live their life to the fullest. In the story, a middle age blind man, who
is a friend to the narrator s wife, and used to be her boss at one point, visits the narrator and his wife.
The narrator has never interacted with blind people before, and all he knew about blind people was
what he had seen on television. Blind people are stereotypically portrayed on television as slow
moving, dull people, who never laugh. Based on this perception, the narrator was reluctant to meet the
blind man and doubted whether they were going to connect. This is evident when the narrator states, I
wasn t enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew. And his being blind bothered me (Carver 1).
The doubt the narrator had towards blind people his further evident when the blind man arrives at his
house. On seeing the blind man for the first time in the parking lot, the narrator noticed that the blind
man had a beard, but he thought that it was unusual. This is evident when the narrator remarks, This
blind man, feature this, he was wearing a full beard! A beard on a blind man! Too much, I say (Carver
4). The skeptical view, the narrator had towards blind people is further brought out when the narrator
was being told about the death of the blind man s wife. The narrator could not imagine a man

How Vacation Is A Good Time
Going on vacation is a way to relax, reduce stress, and spend time with my family. The different
cultures, places, and laughs that we experience on vacations are truly memorable. When I was
younger, my sister and I would take vacations with my grandparents. On these road trips, we would go
hiking, go to water parks, and have picnics. On every trip, either someone was embarrassed or injured.
When I was 8 or 9 years old, I was afraid that my grandpa was seriously hurt on one of our trips.
Ultimately, on most of our adventures, we all had a laugh and a good time. Although it s important to
take vacations and trips with my family, we should remember to be safe and smart, have a good time,
and make vacations memorable. We were on our way to a park called Turkey Run, in Indiana, with
trails, a water park and picnic areas. We stopped at a gas station with lots of treats and a McDonalds
with a Play Place. At the time, my sister and I loved to play in the jungle gyms after we ate at
McDonalds. The vehicle that we drove down to the park was a conversion van that had a toilet, a bed,
and a sink. We stayed in the van during the nights, while we were on vacation, instead of going to a
hotel or staying in tents. We either slept in a pull out bed, on the floor, or between the two front seats. I
liked this aspect of the trip because it not only created memories from the vacation, but I liked the
sleeping conditions throughout the adventure. This van was a part of who my grandparents

Moral And Ethical Dilemmas Of Technology
Technology as defined by the New American Oxford Dictionary: The application of scientific
knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry.
Technology has been linked to man since the very beginnings of humanity. Through observation man
gains knowledge, and with that knowledge inevitably comes technology. In the our modern world, we
are starting to see the effects of this technology as it is increasingly influenced by what biologists call
culture the ability to pass down information from generation to generation. In short, because culture
allows each generation to learn from and build off its predecessors, technology is now increasing
exponentially. A quote commonly attributed to Sir Isaac Newton summarizes this idea: If I ... Show

Throughout Frankenstein, one can clearly see the effects of failing to foresee the natural consequences
of implementing the technology to create life through the monster s actions. In fact, the vast majority
of the misery in the novel, if not all of it, could have been avoided if Victor would have taken a few
logical precautionary actions before he created the monster. A critic may say that Victor had no way of
knowing that the monster would kill nearly all of his family. However, in actuality Victor should have
been able to realize the grave dangers and taken the logical precautions. Instead of choosing to look
down upon the monster and fleeing it because of its frightful appearance, Victor should have at the
very least made the assumption that it could act and think as a human, especially given that it was
built out of human organs. As Frankenstein says himself: My father was not scientific, and I was left
to struggle with a child s blindness, added to a student s thirst for knowledge. (Shelly 36). That is, if
he would have given any thought to what would happen after he created life, it could have been a
successful scientific breakthrough, not a tragedy. He could have built a cage, attempted to teach it, or
even killed it right after it woke up (of course, there may be a few moral issues associated with this
method). Instead, Frankenstein blames his own fault of ignorance on his father. The problems with
technology presented in

Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy For Advanced Chronic...
Proposal Title: Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy in Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease: Impact on
Patient Centered Outcomes Background In the United States, over 5 million patients have heart failure
(HF) and approximately 20 million patients have chronic kidney disease (CKD). Both conditions are
linked by multiple risk factors including obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, tobacco abuse, and
increasing age. The presence of HF increases the risk of CKD and vice versa. Nearly one third of all
patients with HF and 70% of Medicare patients with HF have Stage III CKD or greater and
approximately 50% of dialysis dependent end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients will develop HF.

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) emerged as an important treatment for HF patients with
systolic dysfunction and a prolonged QRS duration. Although findings from landmark trials have led
to widespread use of CRT in many patient cohorts, there has been considerable controversy
surrounding its use in patients with advanced CKD because these patients are poorly represented in
these trials. The few published studies exploring the use of CRT in advanced CKD have shown
modest reduction in HF hospitalization or death, but those studies have been limited by their small
size, retrospective nature, and lack of data on patient centered outcomes (e.g. functional status and
quality of life). The lack of data regarding how CRT impacts outcomes among patients with advanced
CKD is a major problem especially in light of the results of an unpublished analysis of the National
Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR) Implantable Cadioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Database (which
captures data on most patients who receive a CRT D device in the United States) demonstrating that
37% of patients receiving a CRT device had advanced CKD (defined as CKD Stage III V). There are
no prospective studies that have evaluated, or are in the process of evaluating, CRT in patients with
advanced CKD. This issue is further compounded by the potentially higher risk of procedural
complications in such patients. Physicians

Margaret Atwood s The Handmaid Tale Essay
It is necessary for the government to impose a certain amount of power and control of its citizens in
order for a society to function properly. However, too much power and control in a society eliminates
the freedom of the residents, forbidding them to live an ordinary life. In the dystopian futuristic novel,
The Handmaids Tale, Margaret Atwood demonstrates the theme of power and control through an
oppressive society called the Republic of Gilead. The government established power and control
through the use of the wall, military control, the salvaging, the particicution, and gender.
The dead bodies of those who have committed acts against the government hang on a structure called
the Wall. The Wall is a method to implement fear on the citizens. Offred describes the purpose of the
wall when she states, We stop, together as of on signal and stand to loook at the bodies. It doesn t
matter if we look. Were supposed to look: this is what they are there for, hanging on the wall.
Sometimes they ll be there for days, until there s a new batch, so as many people as possible will have
a chance to see them (Atwood 40). The wall is a symbol of sin and it creates fear and force in the
Republic of Gilead. It is a warning to the citizens of the punishment for disobeying the rules. The
people that hang on the Wall have committed atrocities and must be made into examples, for the rest
(Atwood 42). Therefore, when the citizens see the punishment for violating the government s rules,

Horace Walpole s Castle Of Otranto
In the art of storytelling, there is no greater important detail than the setting. The environment of a
story is the glue that grounds the characters together, the fertile valley in which the plot is cultivated
and grown, and the often the core influence that forwards the narrative. The classic Gothic literature
works of Horace Walpole s Castle of Otranto as well as Anna and John Aikin s Sir Bertrand both are
stories that have not only their plots bound and driven by their settings, but have their dark and
horrifying moods created by the environment as well (Walpole 586)(Aikin and Aikin 589). In these
two stories, and most other forms of literature, the environment is the essential driving force that both
creates the tones of the stories and advances the plot by forcing the reader into an environment they
are unfamiliar with.
One of the most common settings in Gothic literature, which also can drive forward the plot, is an old
medieval castle. Horace Walpole s Castle of Otranto is not an exception to this trend. Almost
immediately after Manfred tries to force Isabella to marry him, she tries to escape from the castle but
can not since the building is so well fortified. If she had been inside of just a large house instead, then
it would have been easier to escape. Since she could not find normal way out of the castle, she was
forced to locate another way out. If she had escaped earlier then she would not have found the secret
tunnels that she used to escape, therefore

The scene in the novel where all the porno cinemas were bombed and burned to the ground was
somewhat important in the fact that it showed to state of anarchy our country is in, in this novel. The
movie neglected to use that scene in to the movie version of The Pelican Brief. The burning down of
the porno cinemas gave an example and showed how the Underground Military worked. This in a
sense excluded them from the list of suspects do to there expert use of explosives. If they had indeed

Apathy And Its Effects On Society
Apathy Indifferent. Detached. Desolate from any kind of emotion. This is how one feels when apathy
sneaks its way into their brain. Everything they have ever felt becomes a vague and distant memory, a
vast void. There is nothing that can be done, so it seems to the individual. This leaves him/her quite
helpless. And more often than not, the phrases I don t care! , Why does it even matter? , and It isn t
important are overlooked and are labeled rebellious. But should those phrases not spark a greater
concern? It must be terrifying to view a human being who carries on their lives with lassitude.
Whether or not they know wrong from right, their lack of care and concern instigates negative
consequences from loved ones and society. When one is empty of emotions, there is nothing stopping
them from doing wrong, but there is certainly nothing stopping them from doing right. The notion that
apathetic human beings need supervision, due to fear, needs to be reevaluated. This concern for those
with apathy must be aimed at the reason why. This way, individuals will have a greater understanding
of a realm that is so vastly hollow. Half way through this essay s first paragraph, I had stopped caring
and I had told myself it had not mattered and continued to sit in this very seat, just staring at my
laptop. It was a very foolish thing to tell myself, as I had barely begun to type up this assignment. But
why had I become apathetic, what were my reasons? One does not simply stop

The Benefits of Sin Revealed in The Scarlet Letter
According to Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Scarlet Letter, each of us is born with original sin we have
inherited from the misdeeds of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. As Eve bit hungrily into the
apple from the Tree of Knowledge, starving for wisdom, little did she know that the entire human race
would thereafter be tainted by her sin. Hawthorne and many others believe that ever since, human
beings have been inclined to evil, more likely to disobey than to act in a godly manner. This is a
faithless, cynical view of humanity, but one perhaps justified by the actions of Hester Prynne and the
Reverend Dimmesdale. Sin seems to be an inevitable factor in their lives; though ... Show more

Questioning would have thrown their world into turmoil. They liked simple, written laws. Laws of the
heart were unimportant; after all, how could one live by laws that were not even verbalized or written
in any way? Puritan society was so rigid, so strict, that other rules were not even considered. Hester s
sin comes from her refusal to ignore that other set of rules: the rules of her soul. I read about Hester s
predicament and think, She was following her heart. How is being true to herself a sin? But in the 17th
century in Puritan America, the individual did not create rules. Society did. Granted, the structure and
laws of society are needed to some extent in order to prevent chaos. But some matters are not the
business of government. Hester s sin should have been private, if it had been a sin at all in her eyes.
She could not escape societal laws, though, and her sin darkened in her eyes and made her ashamed.
It is no wonder that Hester is so confused by her sin and its implications, because her guilt is
contradictory in and of itself. The scarlet letter she wears, the symbol of her sin, and her little daughter
Pearl, the product of her sin, remind her every day of how she has done wrong. And yet, in some
mysterious way, these marks of sin save her from other sins. Pearl, though looked upon by others as a

The Science Of Shopping Malcolm Gladwell Analysis
Article Analyzing Essay Malcolm Gladwell s piece, The Science of Shopping , causes his audience to
fear retail anthropologists such as Paco Underhill. On the surface, Gladwell appears to write a short
documentary of sorts about the manipulation of businesses and stores. Venturing deeper into the story
provides the reader with vision of the importance businesses place on their layouts and strategies.
Gladwell continues to assure his point that consumers are not mindlessly obeying what retailors want
them to do. Store owners are required to accommodate to how their customers behave, and what their
target market wants. Gladwell refers to significant moments with Underhill by directly quoting Paco.

sales is not just a safer way for organ transplant but believes it is a moral and ethical duty to help those
in need and secure a safe way to see that happens. Is it moral to sentence thousands to unnecessary
deaths? (96) McKay believes it is immoral. This writer completely agrees. Over the years, kidney
transplants have become much safer and easier to perform due to medical advances and new
medications on the market and the risk for the donor and the recipient is very low. A person should
have the right to do what they want with their own body, especially when it comes to matters of life
and death. Selling a kidney to help one financially, as well as helping another person live a longer and
fuller life is ethically correct. If a person can sell blood, sperm, and even pregnant women who are
either surrogates or giving up their baby to a childless couple, have their entire medical and lifestyle
needs paid for by the adopting parents, then why cannot similar rules be made for organs sales? Tens

on white privilege (or white skin privilege) which can also be called the huge pink elephant in the
room. Society (especially now) believe that America have advanced past racism when in all actuality

privilege. However, skin that is not white has far more injustices, they are oppressed and they are the
ones that suffer, not having this same privilege (King, M.T. 2009). I do believe the only difference
between racism and 2016 as compared to 1960 is the law civil laws enacted caused white Americans
to construct more subtle ways of displaying racist behaviours. In doing this assignment not only did I
read what the author stated about white

  • 2. The Importance Of Sanitation In Armall Lack of solid waste collection and poor drainage combined with lack of safe pit latrines brings up poor hygiene conditions in Armall. Therefore, the inadequate sanitation and hygiene practices in Armall resulted in morbidity and mortality due to endemic infections, which cause diarrhoea and other illnesses. Sanitation in Armall was severely neglected by both the service utility and the households because some people in Armall were using open defecation, others used plastic bags as toilets and others did the defecation in streets. Lack of water and sanitation in Armall has a serious effect on the people s health, which has also created poverty to most households. • 3. Why Public Transportation Why Public Transportation Is So Limited in the United States by Daniel Faris, is an article published on Truth Out.org, a nonprofit journalism website. Daniel Faris is a graduate from Susquehanna University, where he studied journalism and business, and writes about politics, technology, and progressive music in his free time. His article on public transportation exposes, what he believes to be, some of the major flaws behind the American public transportation system. Throughout this article Faris uses rhetorical appeals to his advantage. Faris s effectiveness using pathos, logos, and ethos lead to his article having a fairly solid argument with minimal errors. Faris starts off his article by discussing his recent trip to Baltimore and his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He mentions the possibility of autonomous vehicles helping America s problem, but in the end he circles back around to his Baltimore experience. Since the Baltimore public transportation system was previously mentioned, readers experience a stronger sense of pathos when he mentions that the system is over 11 million dollars in debt, and facing uncertainty. He continues with the trend of pathos when describing the current situation of America s public transportation as being more than a little grim, but in the end he reaffirms that he truly wants to see improvement; Here s hoping our priorities change sometime soon. Through his article, Why Public Transportation Is So Limited in the United States , Daniel Faris uses a strong mixture of rhetorical appeals, leaning mostly toward logos. With his use of these, he was able to build an overall solid argument. His writing could come off a bit brash at times, but he always followed those moment with pathos to draw the reader back in. Overall, Faris wrote an excellent, professional article that successfully argued his point without offending anyone with an opposing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Chronic Injuries Robbed Ken Griffey Jr. of Homerun King... He hit 600 home runs (5th most all time), won 10 gold gloves, and made 13 All Star Games. In almost 150 years baseball history, only the great Willie Mays can match Ken Griffey Jr. in these statistical categories. However, despite these extraordinary stats, Ken Griffey Jr. may be the ultimate What Could Have Been player. An incredibly promising career was derailed in the latter half by chronic injuries that robbed him of hundreds of games. If not for these injuries, Griffey was well on his way to becoming the Home Run King (Stark, 2010) and possibly the greatest player ever. Despite these setbacks, Griffey is still revered as one of the greatest and most popular MLB players ever. The savior of baseball in Seattle and the lone star to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He gained endorsements with Pizza Hut and General Mills, and had his own Nintendo video game and Nike shoe line. He also appeared in many TV shows such as The Simpsons and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, as well as movies, and wrote his own autobiography (Ferguson, 2011). His 1989 rookie card remains the most popular baseball card ever. During the prime of his career in the late 1990s, he was easily the most popular baseball player and possibly even most popular athlete in the world. Nowhere in the country is he more popular than in Seattle, where he is considered the savior of baseball in the city. In the 1980s, the Mariners were a historically moribund franchise playing in the crumbling Kingdome. Prior to his arrival, the Mariners had been seriously considering a move to Washington DC, but that all changed once Griffey came (Fort, 2000, p. 313). His exciting style of play immediately attracted fans and attention to the franchise (Caple, 2010). In 1995, Griffey led a miracle rally to the Mariners first playoff appearance in decades (Reader, 2010), and capped the season by scoring the game winning run to defeat the New York Yankees in the first round (Schaefer, 2003, p.6). His rise rejuvenated baseball and the city in general, leading the building of the new stadium, Safeco Field, dubbed the House That Griffey Built . Griffey s most enduring legacy, however, was being one of the few star players who were not involved in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The College Dropout came out in 2004 and was Kanye Wests debut album as a music artist. This song was his third single off the album. As shown from Barbaric Poetries blog, Tia states that Kanye s message in this song is that, when you live life to impress others and cover up your insecurities, you will never be satisfied, thus all will seem to fall down (http://barbaricpoetries. blogspot.com/2012/04/and it all falls down.html). • 8. Compare And Contrast The Last Judgement And The Sistine... Both of the paintings by Michelangelo are excellent examples of Renaissance era art. These two paintings are the Last Judgment and the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The ceiling was worked on from 1508 to 1512 and shows many themes common throughout Renaissance art. One of the most prominent is the stunning realism in both pieces. Despite there being hundreds of figures is both pieces each is extremely realistic. There s a huge stress on the human figure in this painting and they look as though they could be real people. There s also a fair amount of perspective, although this isn t one of the most important parts of the paintings. Another interesting motif is the international influence in the paintings. Even though the paintings have extremely Catholic origins they have some elements of other cultures. One of the biggest ways this is shown is in the sibyls that are between some of the scenes. These sibyls have origins from Africa, Asia, Greece, and Ionia. These paintings also show departure from traditional Catholic values in some of the symbolism the paintings show. • 9. The Beliefs Of Faith In Martin Luther s The Freedom Of God When you hear the word faith, what comes to your mind? Do you think of religion, purpose, or your belief in something? What is faith? Is it a feeling, a thought, or a concept? As Martin Luther said in his book Freedom of a Christian, faith is God s work in us, that changes us and gives new birth from God. When one thinks of faith, they maybe think about their personal relationship with God and the unconditional love He has. He who through faith is righteous shall live. The Word of God cannot be interpreted by any works but only by faith. Martin Luther had stated that, It is clear that, as the soul needs only the Word of God for its life and righteousness, so it is justified by faith alone and not any works. (Janz, A Reformation Reader, pg 109) There are three powers or virtues of faith that Martin Luther describes. Firstly, justification through faith alone, which means we are free from the law and works as regards our justification and salvation. Secondly, unity of man and Christ like bride to bridegroom which means faith unites the soul to Christ, and lastly, the ability to ascribe to [God] truthfulness, righteousness, and whatever else should be ascribed to one who is trusted. (Luther, The Freedom of a Christian, p. 103) The first proposition of the three powers of faith is, Every Christian is by faith so exalted above all things that, in spiritual power, he is completely lord of all things, so that nothing whatever can do him any hurt; yea, all things are ... The whistle blew and the match was on. The first ninety minutes of the match were an exciting battle and the game ended in a 0 0 score; on to overtime! According to an article written Zoe Doherty During the final, with eleven minutes gone in extra time, Alan Ball crossed to George Hurst whose subsequent shot cannoned off the underside of the goal and down either just on or over the goal line. The goal was controversially allowed, and its validity is still questioned to this day. (Goal line technology in soccer 2010) Controversy has always played a major role in the officiating of sporting events since the official s decisions are based upon their judgments and observations. Maybe in 1966 that had to be the case, but today, thanks to modern technology, that s not so. Rather than relying solely on their personal observations to determine a call, soccer officials are now being assisted by goal line technology, a tool to assist them making their official rulings during a game. The innate response is the first line of defence and relies on pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) to recognise specific pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and provide a rapid response to the recognised pathogen. This system also has the complement system and phagocytic cells as its disposal. Pathogens expresses PAMPs which activate antigen presenting cells (APC), such as dendritic cells (DC), through ligation of PRR (e.g. Toll like receptors) found on the APC surface. Industrial Advantage And Disadvantage Of Dc Motor Introduction D.C Motor is used for variable speed operation because in dc motor torque and flux that can be control independently and that is achieved by armature and field current control respectively. D.C motor has many advantages delivering high starting torque, ease of control and non linear performance. But due to certain disadvantage of dc machine such as mechanical commutator and brush holder required time to time maintenance [1] .So cost of the drive system is increases. Because of low cost, better performance and the requirement of maintenance is less as compared to D.C Motor it make the asynchronous motor advantageous in many industrial applications. SCIM are most widely used than all the rest of the electric motor as they have all the advantages of A.C Motors and are cheaper in cost as compared to slip ring induction motor. Because of absence of slip rings, brush maintenance duration and cost associated with the wear and tear of brush are minimized. On these road trips, we would go hiking, go to water parks, and have picnics. On every trip, either someone was embarrassed or injured. When I was 8 or 9 years old, I was afraid that my grandpa was seriously hurt on one of our trips. Ultimately, on most of our adventures, we all had a laugh and a good time. Although it s important to take vacations and trips with my family, we should remember to be safe and smart, have a good time, and make vacations memorable. We were on our way to a park called Turkey Run, in Indiana, with trails, a water park and picnic areas. We stopped at a gas station with lots of treats and a McDonalds with a Play Place. At the time, my sister and I loved to play in the jungle gyms after we ate at McDonalds. The vehicle that we drove down to the park was a conversion van that had a toilet, a bed, and a sink. We stayed in the van during the nights, while we were on vacation, instead of going to a hotel or staying in tents. We either slept in a pull out bed, on the floor, or between the two front seats. I liked this aspect of the trip because it not only created memories from the vacation, but I liked the sleeping conditions throughout the adventure. This van was a part of who my grandparents ... • 28. Moral And Ethical Dilemmas Of Technology Technology as defined by the New American Oxford Dictionary: The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry. Technology has been linked to man since the very beginnings of humanity. Through observation man gains knowledge, and with that knowledge inevitably comes technology. In the our modern world, we are starting to see the effects of this technology as it is increasingly influenced by what biologists call culture the ability to pass down information from generation to generation. In short, because culture allows each generation to learn from and build off its predecessors, technology is now increasing exponentially. A quote commonly attributed to Sir Isaac Newton summarizes this idea: If I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout Frankenstein, one can clearly see the effects of failing to foresee the natural consequences of implementing the technology to create life through the monster s actions. In fact, the vast majority of the misery in the novel, if not all of it, could have been avoided if Victor would have taken a few logical precautionary actions before he created the monster. A critic may say that Victor had no way of knowing that the monster would kill nearly all of his family. However, in actuality Victor should have been able to realize the grave dangers and taken the logical precautions. Instead of choosing to look down upon the monster and fleeing it because of its frightful appearance, Victor should have at the very least made the assumption that it could act and think as a human, especially given that it was built out of human organs. As Frankenstein says himself: My father was not scientific, and I was left to struggle with a child s blindness, added to a student s thirst for knowledge. (Shelly 36). That is, if he would have given any thought to what would happen after he created life, it could have been a successful scientific breakthrough, not a tragedy. He could have built a cage, attempted to teach it, or even killed it right after it woke up (of course, there may be a few moral issues associated with this method). Instead, Frankenstein blames his own fault of ignorance on his father. The problems with technology presented in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy For Advanced Chronic... Proposal Title: Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy in Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease: Impact on Patient Centered Outcomes Background In the United States, over 5 million patients have heart failure (HF) and approximately 20 million patients have chronic kidney disease (CKD). Both conditions are linked by multiple risk factors including obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, tobacco abuse, and increasing age. The presence of HF increases the risk of CKD and vice versa. Nearly one third of all patients with HF and 70% of Medicare patients with HF have Stage III CKD or greater and approximately 50% of dialysis dependent end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients will develop HF. Patients with medication refractory HF and CKD and their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) emerged as an important treatment for HF patients with systolic dysfunction and a prolonged QRS duration. Although findings from landmark trials have led to widespread use of CRT in many patient cohorts, there has been considerable controversy surrounding its use in patients with advanced CKD because these patients are poorly represented in these trials. The few published studies exploring the use of CRT in advanced CKD have shown modest reduction in HF hospitalization or death, but those studies have been limited by their small size, retrospective nature, and lack of data on patient centered outcomes (e.g. functional status and quality of life). The lack of data regarding how CRT impacts outcomes among patients with advanced CKD is a major problem especially in light of the results of an unpublished analysis of the National Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR) Implantable Cadioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Database (which captures data on most patients who receive a CRT D device in the United States) demonstrating that 37% of patients receiving a CRT device had advanced CKD (defined as CKD Stage III V). There are no prospective studies that have evaluated, or are in the process of evaluating, CRT in patients with advanced CKD. This issue is further compounded by the potentially higher risk of procedural complications in such patients. Physicians ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Margaret Atwood s The Handmaid Tale Essay It is necessary for the government to impose a certain amount of power and control of its citizens in order for a society to function properly. However, too much power and control in a society eliminates the freedom of the residents, forbidding them to live an ordinary life. In the dystopian futuristic novel, The Handmaids Tale, Margaret Atwood demonstrates the theme of power and control through an oppressive society called the Republic of Gilead. The government established power and control through the use of the wall, military control, the salvaging, the particicution, and gender. The dead bodies of those who have committed acts against the government hang on a structure called the Wall. The Wall is a method to implement fear on the citizens. Offred describes the purpose of the wall when she states, We stop, together as of on signal and stand to loook at the bodies. It doesn t matter if we look. Were supposed to look: this is what they are there for, hanging on the wall. Sometimes they ll be there for days, until there s a new batch, so as many people as possible will have a chance to see them (Atwood 40). The wall is a symbol of sin and it creates fear and force in the Republic of Gilead. It is a warning to the citizens of the punishment for disobeying the rules. The people that hang on the Wall have committed atrocities and must be made into examples, for the rest (Atwood 42). • 33. Horace Walpole s Castle Of Otranto In the art of storytelling, there is no greater important detail than the setting. The environment of a story is the glue that grounds the characters together, the fertile valley in which the plot is cultivated and grown, and the often the core influence that forwards the narrative. The classic Gothic literature works of Horace Walpole s Castle of Otranto as well as Anna and John Aikin s Sir Bertrand both are stories that have not only their plots bound and driven by their settings, but have their dark and horrifying moods created by the environment as well (Walpole 586)(Aikin and Aikin 589). In these two stories, and most other forms of literature, the environment is the essential driving force that both creates the tones of the stories and advances the plot by forcing the reader into an environment they are unfamiliar with. One of the most common settings in Gothic literature, which also can drive forward the plot, is an old medieval castle. Horace Walpole s Castle of Otranto is not an exception to this trend. Almost immediately after Manfred tries to force Isabella to marry him, she tries to escape from the castle but can not since the building is so well fortified. If she had been inside of just a large house instead, then it would have been easier to escape. Since she could not find normal way out of the castle, she was forced to locate another way out. If she had escaped earlier then she would not have found the secret tunnels that she used to escape, therefore ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Everything they have ever felt becomes a vague and distant memory, a vast void. There is nothing that can be done, so it seems to the individual. This leaves him/her quite helpless. And more often than not, the phrases I don t care! , Why does it even matter? , and It isn t important are overlooked and are labeled rebellious. But should those phrases not spark a greater concern? It must be terrifying to view a human being who carries on their lives with lassitude. Whether or not they know wrong from right, their lack of care and concern instigates negative consequences from loved ones and society. When one is empty of emotions, there is nothing stopping them from doing wrong, but there is certainly nothing stopping them from doing right. The notion that apathetic human beings need supervision, due to fear, needs to be reevaluated. This concern for those with apathy must be aimed at the reason why. This way, individuals will have a greater understanding of a realm that is so vastly hollow. Half way through this essay s first paragraph, I had stopped caring and I had told myself it had not mattered and continued to sit in this very seat, just staring at my laptop. The Benefits of Sin Revealed in The Scarlet Letter According to Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Scarlet Letter, each of us is born with original sin we have inherited from the misdeeds of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. As Eve bit hungrily into the apple from the Tree of Knowledge, starving for wisdom, little did she know that the entire human race would thereafter be tainted by her sin. Hawthorne and many others believe that ever since, human beings have been inclined to evil, more likely to disobey than to act in a godly manner. This is a faithless, cynical view of humanity, but one perhaps justified by the actions of Hester Prynne and the Reverend Dimmesdale. Sin seems to be an inevitable factor in their lives; though ... Laws of the heart were unimportant; after all, how could one live by laws that were not even verbalized or written in any way? Puritan society was so rigid, so strict, that other rules were not even considered. Hester s sin comes from her refusal to ignore that other set of rules: the rules of her soul. I read about Hester s predicament and think, She was following her heart. How is being true to herself a sin? But in the 17th century in Puritan America, the individual did not create rules. Society did. Granted, the structure and laws of society are needed to some extent in order to prevent chaos. But some matters are not the business of government. Hester s sin should have been private, if it had been a sin at all in her eyes. She could not escape societal laws, though, and her sin darkened in her eyes and made her ashamed. It is no wonder that Hester is so confused by her sin and its implications, because her guilt is contradictory in and of itself. The scarlet letter she wears, the symbol of her sin, and her little daughter Pearl, the product of her sin, remind her every day of how she has done wrong. And yet, in some mysterious way, these marks of sin save her from other sins. Pearl, though looked upon by others as a devilish child, is perhaps a gift to Hester. Without Pearl, ... On the surface, Gladwell appears to write a short documentary of sorts about the manipulation of businesses and stores. Gladwell continues to assure his point that consumers are not mindlessly obeying what retailors want them to do. Over the years, kidney transplants have become much safer and easier to perform due to medical advances and new medications on the market and the risk for the donor and the recipient is very low. A person should have the right to do what they want with their own body, especially when it comes to matters of life and death. • 41. White Privilege And White Skin Privilege 2 Privilege refers to the unearned advantages enjoyed by a particular group simply because of membership in that group. Privileges accrue to those who (consciously or not) oppress others and are generally invisible to those who enjoy them (Swigonski, M.E. 1996). Having that in mind my position on white privilege (or white skin privilege) which can also be called the huge pink elephant in the room. Society (especially now) believe that America have advanced past racism when in all actuality we still have a long way to go. People in our society can go through life without knowing about white privilege or realizing they themselves, may have this privilege. The white or lighter skin color of a person has automatic benefits, right from birth, them not ever having to do anything to attain this privilege. The consequences are mostly good and outweigh the bad, for the ones that have white privilege. However, skin that is not white has far more injustices, they are oppressed and they are the ones that suffer, not having this same privilege (King, M.T. 2009).
