Essay on A Lesson before Dying
In the world we live in today, religion is an extremely vibrant factor, not only in the environment
surrounding us but with the people we interact with as well. In Ernest J. Gaines novel, A Lesson
Before Dying, it is easy to see how religion impacts the community. In a small community such as
this noveldepicts, religionis the driving force behind nearly every decision made in the story and
can be justified solely on the individual s values.
It is interesting to view religion as the most visible consistency in the novel when the main
character, Grant Wiggins, is himself an atheist. Although he himself does not believe in things such
as heaven or hell he is still impacted upon by the community around him. Grant, an educated man,

In this instance we have a man, Jefferson, who needs help to be able to regain his dignity and die
like a man. Even though Grant, an atheist, would not be helping him do so through religion, he will
give him understanding of the importance of his case to the community.
Religion has many faces in the novel as one would expect, but one face that rings true is the
notion that through religion one can gain dignity. As you can imagine, living in the South in times
such as these was certainly a detriment to African Americans such as the characters in the novel,
but why is it then that African Americans put, more often than not, so much clout to the
community and its church? For simple reasons of course, because inside the church is where
one can gain back the dignity that is lost nearly everyday through racism. Church is the only
place where anyone can be a leader. Church is the place to express yourself freely and come
together to share a ceremony where racism is not present. Most importantly church is the place to
recognize and evaluate the lives of so many people that are continually being marginalized. This
can be seen as another strong factor on how religion is central to the community. For example,
people that become leaders inside the church are looked at with more respect, such as Miss Emma,
Tante Lou, and Reverend Ambrose; three very active

Social Movement Research Paper
To begin, the footage of the police s actions towards people like Michael Brown, Kajieme Powell,
and many other cases reveal the need for the six factors to help develop and support a social
movement. First, if they want to have a successful social movement they must obtain structural
plausibility. Meaning, if they want to produce and sustain a social movement, then they should have
a base or rights and equal freedoms obtained from our Founding Fathers. The structural plausibility
is in The Bill of Rights as it gives Americans freedoms and rights equally.Second, the structural
strain in this movement is the policestereotyping people of color by placing them into demeaning
categories such as suspicious, dangerous, and violent. Consequently, this... Show more content on

Forth, the precipitating event that prompted people to begin this movement is in videos showing
police abusing people of color without a legitimate reason. Furthermore, the increase of innocent
shootings of black people brought attention to Americans, the police, and even the President.
These shootings brought awareness and convinced others to put this serious issue to an end.
Fifth, the mobilization for action began from the community s desire for justice for what the
policemen did to many innocent black people. They started to intercede by creating protests and
bringing awareness to social media by using items such as hashtags. This showed in Michael
Brown s case when people began to organize protests called, No justice, no peace and hashtags, if
they gun me down as seen on Twitter (Complex News, 2014). People started to use social media
as their source of movement by revealing videos of the shootings and posts of the location of the
protests. Lastly, the President could not stop or silence the protesters and their voices other this

Abraham Lincoln And John Wilkes Booth
You all feel the fire now raging in the nation s heart. It s a fire lighted and fanned by Northern
fanaticism. A fire which naught but blood and justice can extinguish. I tell you the Abolitionist
doctrine is the fire which, if allowed to rage, will consume the house and crush us all beneath its
ruins... Fierce Civil War will follow. (Booth) President Abraham Lincoln
was loved by many in the
country, but John Wilkes Boothmade it his sole purpose to kill him. Although some people do not
understand what persuaded John Wilkes Booth to kill President Abraham Lincoln, it was clear that
Booth wanted to commit the act because he was an intense Southerner looking for a Confederate
continuation that would aid the South. On April 14, 1865, tragedy overwhelmed the Ford s Theatre
when John Wilkes Booth made the final choice of Abraham Lincoln s life by taking it. Booth loved
his country immensely and believed the only option left was to dispose of Abraham Lincoln for the
betterment of the United States.
Review of Literature
Sic semper tyrannis! [Thus always to tyrants!] The South is avenged! (Booth) According to the
Ford s Theatre and Renee Montagne s research, John Wilkes Booth had a plan to get rid of
President Lincoln after he heard of Lincoln s discussion for giving African American men the right
to vote along with other plans that Booth claimed unruly. (Montagne 2) Booth wasn t ready for all

More than frenemy Being a single child, as I can tell you, is a difficult thing. Aside from the
sometimes unresolvable loneliness and almost always glued attention, the constant comparison
with the kids next door can be supremely annoying. The phrase stands for those children of
several close friends of your mom or literally just the kids who live next door. For me, there s
always been a girl like that since I was five and things can be a little overwhelming when she is
also a competitive Leo (star sign). In middle school, the girl would ask me to watch TV and ditch
homework with her, while in fact she had secretly done the work beforehand.... Show more content

If we are making a comparison, women obviously have a better appreciation for the word
frenemy, judging from the frequency they use it. After all, envy is what determines the essence
of frenemy, and is mainly the reason that drives people apart. Evolutionary psychology suggests
that women are harder to be associative thinker while man thinks more hierarchically. This makes
women better at raising children, but also makes them more easily jealous, intimated and
insecure. The characterization of frenemy in a way gave women a relatively healthy outlet by
accepting the person as is and avoiding more catfights. Aside from the common connotation,
frenemy has much more positive interpretation: If they weren t enemy, they would have been
friend. This marks respect for your competitor as one who also has great talents and capability. It
is the courage and honesty to admit that because of him you have more incentives to improve.

Sexuality in Aubrey Beardsley s Story of Venus and Tannhäuser
Aubrey Beardsley wrote The Story of Venus and Tannhäuser during the fin de siècle, the end
of the Victorian Era. This decadent work, following Baudelaire s credo art for art s sake first of
all, portrays sex and sexualities in a playful manner. In addition to mocking conventional Victorian
moral codes, and parodying pornographic conventions, The Story of Venus and Tannhäuseralso
supports Foucault s idea that the Victorian Era witnessed a diffusion of sexualities.
The Story of Venus and Tannhäuser was originally toned down and modified for publication in
1897 in The Savoy, a magazine that Beardsley served as art editor, under the title of Under The
Hill. According to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beardsley s readers were not to be of the common society; rather they had to be well educated
sophisticates to understand his work.
Another pornographic convention that Beardsley broke was that the characters had personalities
and functions in addition to sexual roles says Zatlin (119). Also, they did not have unlimited sexual
energy, rather Tannhäuser was rather relieved when, an hour later, Priapusa and Doricourt and
some others burst drunkenly into the room and claimed Venus for themselves (Beardsley 34).
With the diverse accounts of sexualities and the breaking of almost all of the prerequisites for
erotic writing and pornography of the Victorian Era, Beardsley wrote a truly decadent manuscript
that defied the conventions of mainstream literature. Whether Beardsley would have completed
the tale had he lived longer, or had meant to leave it as is, an unending piece of work, is unknown.
What is known is that Venus and Tannhäuser functions only as a piece of art for art s sake
defying the social conventions that were applied to other works of that time. Works Cited

Abstract
Inez Beverly Prosser (1895 1934), was an African American psychologist of the early twentieth
century. Her main focus was on the significance of racism and its effects upon children relative to
the obtainment of fair and adequate education. This writing will address the endeavors, perspectives,
and accomplishments of this significant yet vastly under recognized African Americanfemale
psychologist. A psychologist who led us on a journey through her perspectives as seen through the

This theory focuses on the potential of an individual and the importance of self actualization. As an
educator, Prosser felt that Caucasian teachers within the institutions of the south were not equipped,
from a psychological perspective of the black culture to adequately teach African American
students. Prosser felt that the Caucasian educators could not relate to those students in the same
manner as an educator of the same race. Prosser set out to bring attention to the significance of her
view by creating, The Comparative Reliability of Objective Tests in English Grammar. The design
of this study was meant to demonstrate that the English grammar tests that were being administered
at that time were unreliable because they did not take into consideration the background or culture
of the African American students. During her tenure, Prosser conducted an extensive study to prove
this point. In her reason given for choosing Cincinnati for her research, this was made clear by her
following statement, (1) to measure vocational interests, leisure interests, play interests, social
participation, emotional or neurotic tendencies, social distance, ascendancy submission,
overstatement, introversion extraversion, and general personality adjustment. . . , (2) to ascertain
the difference, if any, that exists in these traits, and (3) to determine whether one or the other of
these schools is better fostering growth in personality in so

Non Aboriginal Community Research Paper
Introduction
This paper will define what a community is and discuss some of the strengths and the differences
between Australian Aboriginal Communities and Australian Non Aboriginal Communities.
What is Community?
A community is described by many as a group of people who have the same ideologies on their
cohabitation. They share the same interests and more often know how to work together.
The first meaning of community as a locality refers to the territorial or geographic notion of
community the neighbourhood, town or city. The Second meaning of community, the relational
community, refers to qualities of human interaction and social ties that draw people together
(Heller 1989, pp.3 cited in Taylor, Wilkinson and Cheers, 2008). Whereas... Show more content on

In Non Aboriginal communities, the commonality of ethnicity forms the basis of community life
whereas in Aboriginal communities, kinship is an important factor holding community life together
(Taylor, Wilkinson and Cheers, 2008).
As the times and generations change communities of the future will be very different from the ones
we live in today. Geis, D Kutzmark, T. (1995) noted that communities will need to be different
because, as we move through the end of the twentieth century and into the twenty first, we face a
whole new set of socioeconomic, technological, and global forces that are unlike those that brought
us to where we are today.
Conclusion
Communities must have a base structure however there are fundamental differences when looking
at different communities as each community is different in many ways. For example a rural
community may be strengthened by local initiatives to diversify its economy while some
Aboriginal Communities may be strengthened through improving the quality of relationships with
members of its community such as the Djinda Falcons Program.
While all communities need social interaction to foster trust, reciprocity, tolerance and leadership
the ways in which these qualities are developed within Aboriginal and Non Aboriginal Communities
will vary to other non Aboriginal

Causes Of The New Deal
The Great Depression of the 1930 s became one of the United States biggest tragedies and placed
stress upon millions of Americans and their families. President Franklin Roosevelt became every
American s hopeful savior. During this decade of depression, President Roosevelt created the New
Deal blueprint, which included many Federal Agencies, otherwise known as Alphabet Soup, that
focused on addressing the roots of the Great Depressionand ways to fix them. The main agencies of
the New Dealwere the: Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA), Civilian Conservation
Corps (CCC), National Recovery Administration (NRA), Social SecurityAdministration (SSA),
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and Works Progress Administration (WPA). The New Deal was
a successful plan, which included many federal agencies; although most of the agencies were
successful, the relief agencies were the most successful.
President Roosevelt s Alphabet Soup Agencies were created based on his three r s mission:
relief, recovery, and reform. His idea of relief was giving direct aid to the homeless and
unemployed. His goal for his idea of recovery was fixing the economy and focusing on creating
jobs and establishing new successful small businesses. Lastly, President Roosevelt s goal for the
nation s reform was to solve issues within the federal government and create new federal agencies
that would prevent another Great Depression. These three R s were the basis of his New Deal
project and the foundations of every Alphabet Soup Agency.
The recovery based Agriculture Adjustment Administration (AAA), was the first federal program
to place a limit on agricultural production. During the World War One (WWI), agricultural
production was very profitable for Americans because many European countries were unable to
produce large amounts of agriculture, so American agriculture was always in high demand. After
WWI ended, Europeans were able to begin to restore their agricultural industry; thus, making
American agriculture in low demand. This caused items like corn to go from $1.20 per bushel to
26 cents per bushel. Not only agriculture prices retract back to prewar prices, but farmers began
losing their land due to a decline in the earning power of

Essay on The Red Badge of Courage
The Red Badge of Courage
The Red Badge of Courage, by Steven Crane, has been considered one of the greatest war novels
of all time. It is a story that realistically depicts the American Civil War through the eyes of Henry
Fleming, an ordinary farm boy who decides to become a soldier.
Henry is very determined to become a hero, and the story tells Henrys voyage from being a young
coward to becoming a brave man. This voyage is the classic trip from innocence to experience.
To begin, the story starts out with a huge debate between the soldiers. One boy had heard a rumor
that the regiment would be moving on to fight a battle the next day.
Some of the soldiers agree with this boy. Others think that their regiment will never go ... Show

Tom and Henry talk about how they are not going to run away from war, and how they want to
become big time war heroes. This is weird because in the end of the book you will find that their
wishes come true. When the battle starts, all the soldiers get very anxious and nervous. Tom and
Henry don t turn out to be as brave as they think that they could be. While hiding, Tom finds
Henry, and gives him an envelope of letters for his family. Tom believes that this will be his first
and his last battle.
Henry ends up fulfilling his worst nightmare. Instead of sticking out the battle with the rest of his
regiment, he hides behind some brush in order to spare himself from getting shot.
He listens in on the battle, and to much of his surprise, he hears cheering from what s left of his
regiment. He then takes off into the woods in anger. While running through the woods his
conscience begins to speak to him. He keeps telling himself that he is a coward and a deserter. Out
of guilt, Henry runs back to the battle site, and meets again with his regiment. These actions
showed Henry s maturity and desire to be a war hero.
When Henry meets back up with his regiment an older man begins to have a discussion with him.
The old man asks Henry where yuh hit, ol boy? . With massive feelings of guilt, Henry shrugs
away from the man and runs back into the woods. From behind a tree, he can see all the wounded
soldiers on the battle field. At times he regarded

Summary Of Claudia Macteer
Summary
Claudia MacTeer is an adult, telling us about certain events that took place in the fall of 1941.
She was a child back then, around nine years old, but she still remembered how the marigolds
didn t bloom that fall, and she and her sister thought it was probably because of their friend,
Pecola, was having her father s baby. She then tells us that Pecola s father, Cholly Breedlove and
the baby are dead.
Then there s the first season, a flashback, in Autumn in 1940, a year before the fall when no
marigolds were blooming. Claudia and her older sister, Frieda, have just started school. That
autumn the Macteers accepted Mr. Henry (Henry Washington) as a roomer because his rent would
help pay the bills and also because his former roommate was too addled to keep up. Then the family
soon after got another roomer, Pecola Breedlove, an eleven year old, dark skinned girl whom
county officials placed her there after her father burned the family s house down.
Pecola and the sisters then shared childhood adventures, and what Claudia remembers in particular
is the startling onset of Pecola s puberty when she unexpectedly first had her menstruation.
The second narrator then talked about the memories of Pecola s family. They described the house
where the Breedlove s lived (before Cholly burned it down), they were poor and they believed
they were ugly. They also pointed out the horrible relationship between Pecola s parents. Pecola
also has a fourteen year old brother, Sammy, who kept

Health Disparities In Underserved Populations
An underserved are a population group that experiences significant health disparities. Health
disparities are differences in health status when compared to the general population, often
characterized by indicators such as higher incidence of disease and disability, increased mortality
rates, lower life expectancies, and higher rates of pain and suffering.
Rural risk factors for health disparities include geographic isolation, lower socio economic status,
higher rates of health risk behaviors, and limited job opportunities. Higher rates of chronic illness
and poor overall health are found in rural communities when compared to urban populations.
Underserved residents are older, poorer, and have fewer physicians to care for them. This inequality

Sparta And Athens Comparison Essay
The poleis of Athens and Sparta both had similarities and differences to each other, because of this,
these poleis make excellent candidates to compare and contrast. For one thing, Athens and Sparta
both had starkly different governments, Athens had a government where Athenian land owning
males could voice their opinions, while Spartahad an oligarchy. Athens had one of the best navies
for the time period, while Sparta had one of the strongest land forces, the Spartiates. Also, Athens
cared more for luxury items than Sparta and Athens pursued knowledge instead of military power,

In Sparta there was very little value placed on luxury items, until the fourth century BCE, when
aristocratic families became wealthy, and male children were taken at the age of seven to be
trained as warriors. The reason for this was because the main focus of life to Sparta was their
military, which allowed them to maintain control over the helots and maintain public order, and
anything that did not help the military was considered to not be very useful. While in Athens there
was a heavy value placed on luxury items and a high value on aristocratic ideals. This was because
the main focus in Athens was the pursuit of knowledge and prosperity. Many well known
philosophers came from Athens, such as Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates. In both of these poleis, the
governments tried to prevent class distinctions between civilians. Part of the reason Spartans did
not have many luxuries was because everyone in Sparta was considered equal in status and the
government wanted to discourage the development of social and class distinctions. While in
Athens, it showed that the commoners were displeased that the aristocrats had more luxuries than
they did so they ended up rebelling, which in turn caused Athenian democracy to become the
government so all Athenian land owning males had a fair

policies in place. Other main economic drivers have to be taken into account as they contribute
immensely to the stability of the host country s currency against the hard currencies to
determine the exchange rates depending on the currency regime in place. Some of the main
risks which are associated with currency trading include; volatility, exchange rate risk, credit
risk, monetary risk, interest risk and a possibility of government intervention in the financial
markets. For purposes of this paper Japan has been picked as the country to be discussed. The
Japanese currency is valued in Yen which is the official legal currency and is universally
accepted for carrying out major transactions within Japan. The exchange rate between the US
Dollar (USD) and the Japanese Yen (JPY) is one USD is equivalent to 78.46 JPY. The average
Bid price is 78.46 JPY/USD and the Ask price is 78.47/USD. It therefore means that when a total
of $90,000 is converted into JPY, the value is 7,061,730 JPY ( OANDA 2012). Japanese yen has

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to determine the obstacles that people with Parkinson
Disease (PD) face with exercise. This study was formulated, taken into account a patient s mental
reluctance of exercise in such manners as fear of falling and the stage in which the disease has
progressed. The desire of this study was to enrich the exercisegoals of PD patients by sharing
results with physical therapists to help them create a beneficial model for PD patients to follow.
This may help reduce or remove existing barriers in their therapeutic exercise programs.
Method:Over a 2 year span 260 participants having PD were examined. To be selected for this
study each participant had to be coherent, recognized by the UK Brain Bank Criteria as having PD,
at least 40 years of age, received a minimal score on the Mini Mental State Examination of 24 out
of the possible 30, resided in community based dwelling, be present for the biannual examinations,
and most importantly provide consent to be part of the study. Qualifying participants were given a

Chemical Digestion Research Paper
The mouth does both mechanical digestion and chemical digestion. Mechanically, your incisors cut
food into small pieces, next your canines make the food pieces even smaller, than premolars and
molars crush and grind the food, finally saliva moistens the food to a slippery mass. Saliva contains
enzymes which speed the chemical reaction in the body, this part is the chemical digestion. Your
mouth is the first in your digestive system.
Your esophagus connects your mouth to your stomach. It is made of smooth muscle that pushes
your food to the stomach and is lined with mucus that makes food be easier to swallow and move
along. Food stays in your esophagus for about 10 seconds and is located in your throat.
The stomach is located in the abdomen and mechanically and chemically break down food.
Mechanically, three strong layers of muscles contract and turn your food. Chemically, the lining in
the stomach produces digestive juice that digests proteins with an enzyme called pepsin. It also
produces hydrochloric acid that pepsin works best in and it kills bacteria in your food. Your
stomach produces mucus that protects the stomach lining from the acid. Damaged or worn out cells
are quickly replaced. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Scared To Death Summary
In Scared To Death by Ed Yong, he expressed how the fear of wolves has affected the elk in
Yellowstone National Park. The Landscape of Fear has taken a toll on the ecosystems that are
present there. Ed Yong s perspective on this matter is taken into great consideration by an
ecologist named Laundre. Landre finds it fascinating as she looks at it as a perpetual state of
apprehension. Ed Yong discusses how the Landscape of Fear affects the ecosystem and the
relationship between wolves and elk i8n Yellowstone National Park. In January 1995, after
about 70 years after they have been exterminated by predator controlled programs, grey wolves
returned to Yellowstone National Park. Over the period of two winters, 31 animals capture din
Canada were brought back to the park. Then they put radio collars on all the animals to track and
record where they roamed. Laundre became more focused on the elk as they were the main prey
to the wolves. To describe this psychological environment, Laundre coined the term Landscape of
Fear. The Landscape of Fear was present when the elk were in close proximity to the wolves.
Ecologists took interest as they believe that psychology contributes to the Landscape of Fear. They
believe that it also challenges the belief that many animals feel fear only in short bursts, instead of...

Introduction
It is hard to accept that nowadays, organizations get along without having an astute and decisive
information system. Providing a reliable and coherence information system requires a solid security
framework that ensures confidentiality, integrity, availability, and authenticity of the critical
organizational assets. Human factors play a significant role for information security. In particular,
human characteristics behavior impacts information security and ultimately associated risks.
Information Security and Types of Human Factor Errors
Humans are consistently referred to as the weakest link in security. (Schneier, 2007) An exclusive
focus on the technical aspects of security, without due consideration of how the human interacts
with the system, is clearly inadequate. This section includes the types of human factor errors that
can lead to security violations. A number of reasons for these errors will also be discussed.
Information security breaches can be categorized in a number of different ways. There are five
different types of human factor errors, which can be used to explain information security breaches.
First, there are acts of omission, in which people forget to perform a necessary action. For

Unless care is taken, alcohol ads targeted to young legal drinkers also may appeal to those under the
legal age. Because of significant constitutional issues, the Commission continues to recommend
enhanced selfregulation to address concerns about alcohol advertising s appeal to minors.
In addition to self regulation of advertising, a comprehensive alcohol policy also must address the
means by which teens obtain alcohol for consumption. Younger minors obtain alcohol primarily
from noncommercial sources; this social availability can be addressed by changing adult attitudes
about teen use. Changes also are needed to reduce underage alcohol purchases from commercial
outlets, a source of alcohol for older minors. Support is needed for the efforts of organizations that
can conduct rigorous field studies of the efficacy of alternative approaches to improving
enforcement of minimum age purchase laws.
The Commission will continue to monitor alcohol industry self regulation, particularly the
implementation of the new placement standard requiring that adults constitute at least 70% of the
audience for advertising. Additionally, the Commission will monitor the effectiveness of thirdparty
review programs and will continue to evaluate new advertising programs that may have undue
appeal to underage consumers.

The Cask Of Amontillado Violence Essay
Violence exists as a key component in various literature. An example of such literature is Edgar
Allen Poe s The Cask of Amontillado. The short story Poe had written involved an intricate murder
scheme, where the victim would be lured into a corner of a labyrinth of catacombs, chained to the
wall, and then sealed off with a brick wall. While many would not consider this violenceby any
conventional means, it is still violence Poe had written into the story to contribute to the overall
meaning of the passage as a whole. Firstly, the eerie setting and macabre mood Poe establishes in
The Cask of Amontilladoshould be emphasized. As soon as Montresor and Fortunado both step into
the catacombs, the story becomes increasingly grim. For instance, Poe mentions the mass of
skeletons stored within the tunnels, and the nitre accumulating on the walls, hanging like moss.
The air becomes thinner, forcing the torches to become increasingly dim as the pair head deeper...

As mentioned previously, Montresor leading Fortunado into the end of the catacomb and
walling him in a small niche is an act of violence in itself, for obvious reasons. Violence is an
integral part of The Cask of Amontillado, as it contributes to the macabre mood in the story.
Violence also plays a pivotal role in the setting of the passage. The motto of Montresor s family
is Nemo me impune lacessit, meaning, No one provokes me with impunity. From this, Montresor
s motive for murder becomes clear: some time in the past, his family was attacked in some form,
upsetting him, and driving him into killing Fortunado to live up to his family s motto. Violence
is also portrayed literally in his family coat of arms, which displays a large human foot crushing a
serpent biting down on the heel in the midst of a blue field. In short, violence provides the
foundation for the story s plot, and plays a pivotal role in establishing the mood in the

The Effects Of Child Abuse On The United States
It s difficult to comprehend that an adult, often a parent or caregiver, would intentionally hurt an
infant or child. Yet nearly a million children are abused in the United States. Unfortunately that
excludes children who s incidents of child abuse are unreported and undetected. Child abuse can
be defined differently from state to state, but commonly presents in the form of physical,
emotional, and sexual abuse, neglect and abandonment. The focus of this review is physical
abuse, which is defined as non accidental physical injury, from bruising to fractures to the most
serious cases of abuse ending in death (Sink, Hyman, Matheny, Georgopoulos Kleinman, 2010).
Non accidental trauma (NAT) is a leading cause of childhood traumatic injury and death in the
United States. It is estimated that 1,400 children died from maltreatment in the United States in
2002, and abusive head trauma (AHT) accounted for 80% of these deaths (Paul Adamo, 2014).
AHT, also known as shaken baby syndrome or inflicted traumatic brain injury can be caused by
direct blows to the head, dropping or throwing a child, or shaking a child. Though the incident
may only last for a few seconds, the effects can last a lifetime. According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention of the United States, abusive head trauma (AHT) is most common
in children under age 5, with children under one year of age at most risk. Nearly all victims of
AHT suffer serious, long term health consequences such as vision

Fortunato Revenge
The act of revenge means to avenge oneself or another by retaliating in kind or degree. Many
people seek revenge for a variety of different reasons. While some situations warrant vengeance,
other times it is unnecessary or goes too far. Every person is not the same, so it varies from person
to person what initiates the desire for revenge. In The Cask of Amontilladoby Edgar Allen Poe,
Fortunato wrongs his friend Montresor, the protagonist. Although what Fortunato does is unknown,
Montresor seeks extreme revenge. Montresor completely blindsides Fortunato with this pursuit of
revenge as Fortunato does not know he is in the wrong. One perceives by Montresor s actions
towards Fortunato that his exploitative behavior reveals his personal thirst... Show more content on

When Montresor first meets Fortunato at the carnival, Fortunato is already noticeably tipsy.
Morsberger states, To accomplish it, Montresor waits until carnival season, a time of supreme

(1). After convincing Fortunato to come back his vault, Montresor does not stop him from drinking.
Montresor continues to encourage Fortunato to drink more as they are walking through the
catacombs. This continues to happen as they approach the vault. Montresor encourages Fortunato
by saying, But first, another draught of the Medoc (Poe 53). Fortunato s drunkenness allows
Montresor to manipulate him easily as he has no indication of what is happening. Without being
under the influence, Montresor knows his task would be much more difficult. By getting him
drunk, Montresor is able to get him to do exactly what he wants. This makes the task of killing him
almost effortless for Montresor. When Fortunato goes to search for the stored wine, Montresor
suddenly chains him and traps him to the wall. In his article, Method to the Madness, Mcgrath
explains, As the story unfolds, with growing unease we begin to understand that it s on account of
these slights, and the insult that follows them, that Fortunato has been condemned, by Montresor,
to be bricked up in the dank vaults of a crumbling palazzo (2). Montresor taunts Fortunato and walls

The Element Of Moral Philosophy By James Rachels
In the book, The Element of Moral Philosophy , James Rachels explores the several criticisms of
Utilitarianism. In this essay, I will touch on these criticisms, outlining the major implications they
propose to Utilitarianism. I will also explain why many of the notions proposed against
Utilitarianism are self serving, and instead serve to improve the general good of a minority
population, which contradicts the Utilitarian theory of equating moral aptitude to the general good
of a majority population, and that in this respect a greater consequence is achieved. Lastly, I will
demonstrate how many societal values have a Utilitarian basis, which proves that Utilitarianismcan
be salvaged in the face of most criticisms.
In substance, the nature of Utilitarianism is derived of consequence. Utilitarianism proposes that
the outcome of an act should suggest whether or not said act is morally correct. Many philosophers
disagree, and believe that the consequence of an act does little to implicate morality. For example,
there are numerous crimes committed daily. Some of these crimes remain undiscovered and
therefore result in zero negative consequence. The text specifically outlines a particular situation
wherein a peeping Tom spies on a woman without her ever finding out. If the woman never finds
out, then she has no reason to be upset, and in contrast the peeping Tom will be evidently pleased.
This results in a positive outcome, or positive consequence, and therefore would

Intoxication Will Slow Down Your Reaction Time
The experiment tests how long it takes the brain to translate visual information (falling ruler) into
your voluntary (or conscious) motor commands and actions (grasping finger movements) that lead
to the ruler being caught. The shorter the time, the faster your reactions. That s if you were paying
attention in the first place! Indeed practice specifically affects the associative centers in the brain,
so that you can respond faster to what s happening in your visual world. The flow of information
along the visual and motor nerve pathways is relatively constant even with lots of practice.
ALCOHOL CONSUMTION ================== ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, these parts will reach high blood alcohol levels relatively quickly. Alcohol distributes
through body water mainly. This means that men, who have on average more body water then
women, generally achieve lower alcohol concentration. Men have more body water for two
reasons: they are heavier and they have less body fat per kilogram of body weight. Consequently,
the same quantity of alcohol per person usually results in a higher blood alcohol concentration in
women as compared to men.
Alcohol is primarily broken down or metabolized in the liver through two steps mainly: firstly, it is
broken down or oxidized to acetaldehyde by an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenises.
Acetaldehyde is very toxic and held responsible for most of the harmful effects of excessive alcohol
consumption. Secondly, acetaldehyde is efficiently converted into acetate by an enzyme called
acetaldehyde dehydrogenises. Acetate is a harmless compound, which is used for energy
generation. The total amount of ethanol broken down per hour is estimated in the range of 0,1 0,3
gram per kilogram body weight per hour. This is usually translated into 6 9 gram ethanol per hour
for a healthy subject. These fundamental processes are common to all human beings and sufficient
to break down moderate quantities of alcohol. However, environmental factors (drinking habits) and

The American Holocaust And American Americans

Holocaust was a time that was damaging for the Native American people. It was a time that

The sequence of care for a periodontal maintenance appointment would start with updating the
medical status because we always want to know what medications, allergies, or medical problems
the patient might have to provide the best standard of care. The next step would be the patient

the patient s perceptions of their own oral status. Next would be the clinical assessment which
would include comparing new data to baseline data, extraoral and intraoral examination, dental
examination, radiographs, and periodontal examination. For this case study patient, I would

This finally leads to an inflammatory response seen as papules, pustules, and nodules. The
bacterium also causes the formation of free fatty acids, which are irritants, increasing the

Severe acne with associated systemic signs and symptoms, such as fever, is referred to as acne
fulminans. Severe acne, characterized by multiple comedones, without the presence of systemic
symptoms, is known as acne conglobata. This severe form of acne typically heals with lasting
scars. Local symptoms of acne vulgaris may include pain, tenderness, or even erythema (Informed
Health, 2013).
Although acne is seen to only affect the main organ, the skin, different systems of the body are
affected in unison, including the endocrine system, immune system, circulatory system, nervous
system and the digestive system. The long term complications of acne remain as psychological
damage. Many can develop lasting scarring from the skin irritations including atrophic scars,
hypertrophic scars, and keloid scars. While the experience of acne may not be deemed as life
threatening, it does carry with it significant psychological disability (Rubin, Kim, Logan, 2008).
The psychological aspect of acne includes higher rates

African American Literature And Literature Essay
African American literature is the body of work produced in the United States by writers of African
descent. This particular genre traces back to the works from the late eighteenth century by writers
such as Phillis Wheatley to later reaching early high points with slave narratives and the Harlem
Renaissance, and thus continuing today with authors such as Colson Whitehead and Maya
Angelou. Among the themes and issues explored within African Americanliterature are the roles of
African Americans within the larger American society, African American culture, racism, slavery,
and equality. African American writing has also tended to incorporate oral forms such as
spirituals, gospel music, jazz, and rap. Dating back to the pre Revolutionary War period, African
American writers have engaged in a creative dialogue with American letters. The result is a
literature rich in culture and social insight. These pieces offer illuminating assessments of
American identities as well as its history. Since the time of early slavery African American
literature has been overlooked within the literature criticism. This essay thrives to show that within
the English profession African American literature does belong alongside the great works such as
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and poetry as A Road less taken by Robert Frost. I will dive
deep into history to not only investigate what critics think about African American literature, but
why is it not held to a higher standard just as American

Gandalf the Mischiefmonger Essay
If people tried to make an argument that J.R.R. Tolkien didn t used Norse mythology as a
backbone structure when writing The Hobbit in 1937, they would be without a doubt completely
wrong. Many creatures were pulled straight from the Norse myths and thrown into his famous
story, but did he use some of the Norse gods as structures for his characters as well? In the book
The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, he states that Gandalf is seen almost as an Odinic Wanderer ,
comparing him to Odinthe Allfather (Carpenter, C. Tolkien, J.R.R. Tolkien). Rather than Odin,
though, another almost unlikely god could fit the part of Gandalf s basis, and that would be the
trickster god, Loki, son of Laufey and Farbauti. Loki, without a doubt, would be an... Show more

They demand that he uses his not so noble tricks to return the goddess, along with her cherished
apples. Gandalf is not an outright liar, though he does slightly bend the truth throughout the story.
He is the reason that Bilbo is referred to as the burglar, as he puts the sign on the Hobbit s door
himself. Gandalf told the throng If I say he is a burglar, a burglar he is, or will be... (Tolkien 49).
His intentions for lying are more beneficial than Loki s reasons, though he is still manipulating
the idea of Bilbo being a burglar, convincing Thorin and Co. that Bilbo has experience with
thieving. Before they take off for their long journey, Thorin says to Bilbo, Aren t you the
burglar? And isn t sitting on the doorstep your job, not speak of getting inside the door? His
words show that he has some form of faith in Gandalf s white lie about the hobbit being a thief,
even though Bilbo had never stolen anything in his life. Both Gandalf and Loki are gifted with
magical abilities, and they rely their magic as well as their wit to solve their problems. In the
myth The Building of Asgard s Wall , the builder (or rock giant), offered to build a wall around
Asgard and for his payment, he wanted Freyja s hand in marriage, along with both the sun and the
moon. Odin turned to Loki for a plan, and he suggested to give the builder six months rather than
the eighteen months that he originally demanded. The builder agreed to the terms, with one

Fitness Satire
Fitness is one of the most growing industries in the world. We see it everywhere at the stores, on
our televisions, and all around us. We were taught in school that we need to stay fit and healthy
or we would become fat and obese. Fitness is so big now because of our recent problems with
obesity. The problem with trying to stay fit is it takes and a lot of people do not have time, so
companies make workouts that take less than an hour. You look at these people and they are fit
there are not heavy people, everybody get results. The sad thing is they were fit from something
else and a company just told them to be in this video and we will pay you. The bad thing about

say if you eat right and do this program you will become ripped just like me. The only way you
can be as ripped as them is if you put a foreign object in your body. These people are druggies
they use steroids, the most common one is trembolone which is designed for farm animals. It
hurts that they do this and lie to you. The real crap is that they say that they are all natural. The
one person that lights my flame is a bodybuilder named Simeon Panada. This guy is six foot two;
weight 235 pounds, has a waist of 34 and a 57 inch chest. He says that he is all natural and that
people who question me don t know how hard I have worked. Really man you say you are

Research Paper On Herodotus
In this section, Herodotus begins by telling the story of how the slaves of Scythia had formed a
new generation with the Scythian women left behind while the Scythians dominated Asia.
Herodotus writes that upon return, the men went to war with the slaves, but stopped, saying when
they saw us armed, they naturally felt that they were as good as we are, and were meeting us on
equal terms; but when they see us coming with whips instead, the will remember they are slaves.
Once they admit that, they will never try to stand up to us (241). This passage reinforces the notion
thatsome people need or like to be enslaved. Herodotus then describes the land and the people that
are to the north and east, beyond the Tanais bordering Scythia. Herodotus... Show more content on

Scythians decided not to fight the Amazons, but to try to reproduce with them instead. The
Amazons and some Scythians united and married, but the Amazons would not go to live with the

Case #1 Case one is based on Nesbitt, who graduated from Brainiac University Law School. He

was part of the interviewing process, was so impressed with Nesbitt s overall interview that at
the end they shook hands and he stated We are very impressed with you young man! How would

party. Where as Nesbitt, was never one to shrink from political debate , supported the Freedom
Party. Which lead to the men became immersed in a political discussion . Leaving the office,
Nesbitt was concerned about where he now stood with the law firm after their heated discussion.
One week after the interview he received a letter informing him that although he impressed them,
the could not hire him because of his strong affiliation with the Freedom party . Also, stating that
if they were to hire him they would stand to lose upwards of 50% of our valued clientele, should
we begin courting ties with the Freedom Party. The first, and most obvious course of action that
Nesbitt is likely to try and take would be to sue for discrimination. They denied him a job that he

The Happiness Advantage
Everyone s ideal world contains no problems. The dream life is full of happiness because you
have the perfect job, an abundance of money to afford the best of things, and a magic wand to
wave and solve any issue that comes your way. This would be considered in today s society a
person who is very successful, and most of all, happy. This may not always be true. In Shawn
Achor s book, The HappinessAdvantage, he describes happiness as a feeling that everyone should
have regardless of the situation they are in or the problems they are dealing with. He discusses
that happiness is the precursor to success, and not to be confused with the opposing view. The 3
main theories that Achor believes will give the greatest happiness advantage is The Zorro Circle,
The Fulcrum and the Lever, and the Social Investment. Achor suggests that happiness comes
before success because happiness will give you a better outlook, and success may not always
intend that happiness is to follow. Our most positive emotions include hope, love, pride and joy.
Each of these emotions are different according to the person experiencing them. All of them relate
to happiness, which can help us to be in a better mood in the future as well as in the present
(Achor, p.40). Happiness should be our main focus in everything we do. When we set up a smarter
and more motivated mindset, we then start to focus on our own happiness and allow success to
grow from that feeling. Happiness should be the first thing we think about

Natural Resource Of Natural Resources
While natural resources have played an important role in creating wealth and powering
development, recent research shows an inverse correlation between the abundance of natural
resources and growth and development. This has been true of many of the economies in Latin
America, Africa and the Arab world, regions characterized by high levels of natural resources
endowments, be they minerals, oil or timber. The inverse correlation between endowment and
wealth creation dubbed as the natural resourcecurse hypothesis has been the subject of intense study
and has yielded valuable insights into political economy issues.

This understanding is noticeably sparse. To be fair, developing a good understanding of
stakeholder motivations is extremely challenging because of the complex nature of the sector,
which itself arises from special sector characteristics. What are these? These range from the
biophysical, to the social, to economic, to the state. On the biophysical side, forest resources
contribute multiple benefits and services; yet the resource (even though it is technically
renewable) renews only quite slowly and many services can be irreversibly lost if the resource
stock falls below a critical minimum. On the social front, this is a sector which is characterized
by unclear ownership and access rights and conflicts between traditional and modern legal rights.
The resource generates multiple benefits for multiple users and often these are in conflict. Unlike
other resources, forests provide a wide range of public benefits ( watershed protection, carbon
sequestration, biodiversity protection, and ecosystem resilience) only when they are preserved;
and they provide private benefits (timber rents) principally when they are harvested. So there is a
well recognized need for high levels of intervention to ensure optimal and sustainable levels of
harvesting as well as adequate protection of the public benefits. In addition, both,

Differences Between Science And Pseudoscience
Chapter 1:
1.1.hypothesis is a tentative prediction or proposal which is has not been validated. Only once the
hypothesis has been rigorously tested by scientists can it be elevated to the status of a scientific

1.2.The scientific method can not be used to deny or prove the existence of God due to there not
being supported facts to answer questions that are asked. It is also very broad.
1.3. Controlled Experiments allows scientists to construct a situation so that only one variable is
present. They are necessary to support a hypothesis because you form your questions and

The Change Of Wor Vs. Dimensionless Time
As Yortsos et al. (1999) have shown in their work, the change of WOR vs. dimensionless time is
governed by the time regime. He distinguished four such time regimes: Early time, before water
breaks through the layers of a reservoir (Fig. 1, b) in which WOR remains almost constant; The
stage immediately following water breakthrough, when water saturation near the producer is low
(Fig. 1, c). This regime can be analysed using the 1D displacement equation for intermediate values
of water saturation (Eq. 8) which suggests that at intermediate values of water saturation at the
producer,S_w^*≤0.5, the WOR time relationship is described with a linear function of logW vs.
logt with slope1. Intermediate time between (ii) and (iv), reflecting... Show more content on

Using diagnostic plots of log[(1+W)2/(Wt)] vs. logW Yortsos et al. (1999) showed numerically that
for large water oil viscosity ratio and small Corey exponent to oil, the flood front water saturation
is relatively low. As a result the behavior immediately following breakthrough described by Eq. 8
is valid over a wide range of WOR, in which case the ratio [(1+W)2/(Wt)] remains approximately
constant for an extensive range of WOR. Conversely, for small viscosity ratios, the late time
behavior becomes dominant at much lower values of WOR. His studies were supported by

Compare And Contrast The Soviet Revolution And Vietnam...
The lack of knowledge of other countries past political histories and socioeconomic characteristics
affects our capability to understand today s conflicts. We should share political topics and
experiences of prior conflicts to prepare our future generations for the unexpected controversies, for
instance, the current North Korea crisis. Next will compare and contrast the Soviet Revolution and
Vietnam Revolution using DeFronzo s five factors of a revolution that must be present for any
revolution to be successful. Both revolutions were a success because all five factors were
simultaneously present; the mass discontent, divided elites, unifying motivations that unite
different social groups in support of the revolution, a political crisis for the existing government
involving loss of legitimacy and armed forces loyalty, and a permissive world context in that other
nations intervention are not effective at preventing the revolution from succeeding. The United
States intervened in both revolutionary movements but was not able to stop their success.
Following are the factors explaining the historical development and the success of both conflicts.
The Soviet revolution succeeded because all five factors of a successful revolution were present
simultaneously. The mass frustration factor makes or break the revolutionary movement. In this
case the growth of frustration was present among most of the Russians. Russians were not satisfied
with the inequality of opportunities to fulfill

  • 2. Essay on A Lesson before Dying In the world we live in today, religion is an extremely vibrant factor, not only in the environment surrounding us but with the people we interact with as well. In Ernest J. Gaines novel, A Lesson Before Dying, it is easy to see how religion impacts the community. In a small community such as this noveldepicts, religionis the driving force behind nearly every decision made in the story and can be justified solely on the individual s values. It is interesting to view religion as the most visible consistency in the novel when the main character, Grant Wiggins, is himself an atheist. Although he himself does not believe in things such as heaven or hell he is still impacted upon by the community around him. Grant, an educated man, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this instance we have a man, Jefferson, who needs help to be able to regain his dignity and die like a man. Even though Grant, an atheist, would not be helping him do so through religion, he will give him understanding of the importance of his case to the community. Religion has many faces in the novel as one would expect, but one face that rings true is the notion that through religion one can gain dignity. As you can imagine, living in the South in times such as these was certainly a detriment to African Americans such as the characters in the novel, but why is it then that African Americans put, more often than not, so much clout to the community and its church? For simple reasons of course, because inside the church is where one can gain back the dignity that is lost nearly everyday through racism. Church is the only place where anyone can be a leader. Church is the place to express yourself freely and come together to share a ceremony where racism is not present. Most importantly church is the place to recognize and evaluate the lives of so many people that are continually being marginalized. This can be seen as another strong factor on how religion is central to the community. For example, people that become leaders inside the church are looked at with more respect, such as Miss Emma, Tante Lou, and Reverend Ambrose; three very active ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Social Movement Research Paper To begin, the footage of the police s actions towards people like Michael Brown, Kajieme Powell, and many other cases reveal the need for the six factors to help develop and support a social movement. First, if they want to have a successful social movement they must obtain structural plausibility. Meaning, if they want to produce and sustain a social movement, then they should have a base or rights and equal freedoms obtained from our Founding Fathers. The structural plausibility is in The Bill of Rights as it gives Americans freedoms and rights equally.Second, the structural strain in this movement is the policestereotyping people of color by placing them into demeaning categories such as suspicious, dangerous, and violent. Consequently, this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Forth, the precipitating event that prompted people to begin this movement is in videos showing police abusing people of color without a legitimate reason. Furthermore, the increase of innocent shootings of black people brought attention to Americans, the police, and even the President. These shootings brought awareness and convinced others to put this serious issue to an end. Fifth, the mobilization for action began from the community s desire for justice for what the policemen did to many innocent black people. They started to intercede by creating protests and bringing awareness to social media by using items such as hashtags. This showed in Michael Brown s case when people began to organize protests called, No justice, no peace and hashtags, if they gun me down as seen on Twitter (Complex News, 2014). People started to use social media as their source of movement by revealing videos of the shootings and posts of the location of the protests. • 4. Abraham Lincoln And John Wilkes Booth You all feel the fire now raging in the nation s heart. It s a fire lighted and fanned by Northern fanaticism. A fire which naught but blood and justice can extinguish. I tell you the Abolitionist doctrine is the fire which, if allowed to rage, will consume the house and crush us all beneath its ruins... Fierce Civil War will follow. (Booth) President Abraham Lincoln was loved by many in the country, but John Wilkes Boothmade it his sole purpose to kill him. Although some people do not understand what persuaded John Wilkes Booth to kill President Abraham Lincoln, it was clear that Booth wanted to commit the act because he was an intense Southerner looking for a Confederate continuation that would aid the South. On April 14, 1865, tragedy overwhelmed the Ford s Theatre when John Wilkes Booth made the final choice of Abraham Lincoln s life by taking it. Booth loved his country immensely and believed the only option left was to dispose of Abraham Lincoln for the betterment of the United States. Review of Literature Sic semper tyrannis! [Thus always to tyrants!] The South is avenged! (Booth) According to the Ford s Theatre and Renee Montagne s research, John Wilkes Booth had a plan to get rid of President Lincoln after he heard of Lincoln s discussion for giving African American men the right to vote along with other plans that Booth claimed unruly. • 5. Analyse a word Mengdie Luo mandyluo@umich.edu English 125.043 Scott Beal Jan.23, 2013 Assignment #1 More than frenemy Being a single child, as I can tell you, is a difficult thing. Aside from the sometimes unresolvable loneliness and almost always glued attention, the constant comparison with the kids next door can be supremely annoying. The phrase stands for those children of several close friends of your mom or literally just the kids who live next door. For me, there s always been a girl like that since I was five and things can be a little overwhelming when she is also a competitive Leo (star sign). In middle school, the girl would ask me to watch TV and ditch homework with her, while in fact she had secretly done the work beforehand.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If we are making a comparison, women obviously have a better appreciation for the word frenemy, judging from the frequency they use it. After all, envy is what determines the essence of frenemy, and is mainly the reason that drives people apart. Evolutionary psychology suggests that women are harder to be associative thinker while man thinks more hierarchically. This makes women better at raising children, but also makes them more easily jealous, intimated and insecure. The characterization of frenemy in a way gave women a relatively healthy outlet by accepting the person as is and avoiding more catfights. Aside from the common connotation, frenemy has much more positive interpretation: If they weren t enemy, they would have been friend. This marks respect for your competitor as one who also has great talents and capability. It is the courage and honesty to admit that because of him you have more incentives to improve. • 6. Sexuality in Aubrey Beardsley s Story of Venus and... Sexuality in Aubrey Beardsley s Story of Venus and TannhГ¤user Aubrey Beardsley wrote The Story of Venus and TannhГ¤user during the fin de siГЁcle, the end of the Victorian Era. This decadent work, following Baudelaire s credo art for art s sake first of all, portrays sex and sexualities in a playful manner. In addition to mocking conventional Victorian moral codes, and parodying pornographic conventions, The Story of Venus and TannhГ¤useralso supports Foucault s idea that the Victorian Era witnessed a diffusion of sexualities. The Story of Venus and TannhГ¤user was originally toned down and modified for publication in 1897 in The Savoy, a magazine that Beardsley served as art editor, under the title of Under The Hill. According to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beardsley s readers were not to be of the common society; rather they had to be well educated sophisticates to understand his work. Another pornographic convention that Beardsley broke was that the characters had personalities and functions in addition to sexual roles says Zatlin (119). Also, they did not have unlimited sexual energy, rather TannhГ¤user was rather relieved when, an hour later, Priapusa and Doricourt and some others burst drunkenly into the room and claimed Venus for themselves (Beardsley 34). With the diverse accounts of sexualities and the breaking of almost all of the prerequisites for erotic writing and pornography of the Victorian Era, Beardsley wrote a truly decadent manuscript that defied the conventions of mainstream literature. Whether Beardsley would have completed the tale had he lived longer, or had meant to leave it as is, an unending piece of work, is unknown. What is known is that Venus and TannhГ¤user functions only as a piece of art for art s sake defying the social conventions that were applied to other works of that time. INEZ BEVERLY PROSSER Inez Beverly Prosser Twentieth Century African American Psychologist Marcus Monteiro PSY 310 May 4, 2014 Professor Sara Molloy Abstract Inez Beverly Prosser (1895 1934), was an African American psychologist of the early twentieth century. Her main focus was on the significance of racism and its effects upon children relative to the obtainment of fair and adequate education. This theory focuses on the potential of an individual and the importance of self actualization. As an educator, Prosser felt that Caucasian teachers within the institutions of the south were not equipped, from a psychological perspective of the black culture to adequately teach African American students. Prosser felt that the Caucasian educators could not relate to those students in the same manner as an educator of the same race. Prosser set out to bring attention to the significance of her view by creating, The Comparative Reliability of Objective Tests in English Grammar. The design of this study was meant to demonstrate that the English grammar tests that were being administered at that time were unreliable because they did not take into consideration the background or culture of the African American students. During her tenure, Prosser conducted an extensive study to prove this point. In her reason given for choosing Cincinnati for her research, this was made clear by her following statement, (1) to measure vocational interests, leisure interests, play interests, social participation, emotional or neurotic tendencies, social distance, ascendancy submission, overstatement, introversion extraversion, and general personality adjustment. . . , (2) to ascertain the difference, if any, that exists in these traits, and (3) to determine whether one or the other of these schools is better fostering growth in personality in so ... Non Aboriginal Community Research Paper Introduction This paper will define what a community is and discuss some of the strengths and the differences between Australian Aboriginal Communities and Australian Non Aboriginal Communities. What is Community? A community is described by many as a group of people who have the same ideologies on their cohabitation. They share the same interests and more often know how to work together. The first meaning of community as a locality refers to the territorial or geographic notion of community the neighbourhood, town or city. The Second meaning of community, the relational community, refers to qualities of human interaction and social ties that draw people together (Heller 1989, pp.3 cited in Taylor, Wilkinson and Cheers, 2008). Whereas... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Non Aboriginal communities, the commonality of ethnicity forms the basis of community life whereas in Aboriginal communities, kinship is an important factor holding community life together (Taylor, Wilkinson and Cheers, 2008). As the times and generations change communities of the future will be very different from the ones we live in today. Geis, D Kutzmark, T. (1995) noted that communities will need to be different because, as we move through the end of the twentieth century and into the twenty first, we face a whole new set of socioeconomic, technological, and global forces that are unlike those that brought us to where we are today. Conclusion Communities must have a base structure however there are fundamental differences when looking at different communities as each community is different in many ways. For example a rural community may be strengthened by local initiatives to diversify its economy while some Aboriginal Communities may be strengthened through improving the quality of relationships with members of its community such as the Djinda Falcons Program. While all communities need social interaction to foster trust, reciprocity, tolerance and leadership the ways in which these qualities are developed within Aboriginal and Non Aboriginal Communities will vary to other non Aboriginal ... • 9. Causes Of The New Deal The Great Depression of the 1930 s became one of the United States biggest tragedies and placed stress upon millions of Americans and their families. President Franklin Roosevelt became every American s hopeful savior. During this decade of depression, President Roosevelt created the New Deal blueprint, which included many Federal Agencies, otherwise known as Alphabet Soup, that focused on addressing the roots of the Great Depressionand ways to fix them. The main agencies of the New Dealwere the: Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA), Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), National Recovery Administration (NRA), Social SecurityAdministration (SSA), Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and Works Progress Administration (WPA). The New Deal was a successful plan, which included many federal agencies; although most of the agencies were successful, the relief agencies were the most successful. President Roosevelt s Alphabet Soup Agencies were created based on his three r s mission: relief, recovery, and reform. His idea of relief was giving direct aid to the homeless and unemployed. His goal for his idea of recovery was fixing the economy and focusing on creating jobs and establishing new successful small businesses. Lastly, President Roosevelt s goal for the nation s reform was to solve issues within the federal government and create new federal agencies that would prevent another Great Depression. These three R s were the basis of his New Deal project and the foundations of every Alphabet Soup Agency. The recovery based Agriculture Adjustment Administration (AAA), was the first federal program to place a limit on agricultural production. During the World War One (WWI), agricultural production was very profitable for Americans because many European countries were unable to produce large amounts of agriculture, so American agriculture was always in high demand. After WWI ended, Europeans were able to begin to restore their agricultural industry; thus, making American agriculture in low demand. This caused items like corn to go from $1.20 per bushel to 26 cents per bushel. It is a story that realistically depicts the American Civil War through the eyes of Henry Fleming, an ordinary farm boy who decides to become a soldier. Henry is very determined to become a hero, and the story tells Henrys voyage from being a young coward to becoming a brave man. This voyage is the classic trip from innocence to experience. To begin, the story starts out with a huge debate between the soldiers. One boy had heard a rumor that the regiment would be moving on to fight a battle the next day. Tom and Henry talk about how they are not going to run away from war, and how they want to become big time war heroes. This is weird because in the end of the book you will find that their wishes come true. When the battle starts, all the soldiers get very anxious and nervous. Tom and Henry don t turn out to be as brave as they think that they could be. While hiding, Tom finds Henry, and gives him an envelope of letters for his family. Tom believes that this will be his first and his last battle. Henry ends up fulfilling his worst nightmare. Instead of sticking out the battle with the rest of his regiment, he hides behind some brush in order to spare himself from getting shot. He listens in on the battle, and to much of his surprise, he hears cheering from what s left of his regiment. He then takes off into the woods in anger. While running through the woods his conscience begins to speak to him. He keeps telling himself that he is a coward and a deserter. Out of guilt, Henry runs back to the battle site, and meets again with his regiment. These actions showed Henry s maturity and desire to be a war hero. When Henry meets back up with his regiment an older man begins to have a discussion with him. The old man asks Henry where yuh hit, ol boy? . With massive feelings of guilt, Henry shrugs away from the man and runs back into the woods. From behind a tree, he can see all the wounded soldiers on the battle field. At times he regarded ... She was a child back then, around nine years old, but she still remembered how the marigolds didn t bloom that fall, and she and her sister thought it was probably because of their friend, Pecola, was having her father s baby. She then tells us that Pecola s father, Cholly Breedlove and the baby are dead. Then there s the first season, a flashback, in Autumn in 1940, a year before the fall when no marigolds were blooming. Then the family soon after got another roomer, Pecola Breedlove, an eleven year old, dark skinned girl whom county officials placed her there after her father burned the family s house down. Pecola and the sisters then shared childhood adventures, and what Claudia remembers in particular is the startling onset of Pecola s puberty when she unexpectedly first had her menstruation. The second narrator then talked about the memories of Pecola s family. They described the house where the Breedlove s lived (before Cholly burned it down), they were poor and they believed they were ugly. Sparta And Athens Comparison Essay The poleis of Athens and Sparta both had similarities and differences to each other, because of this, these poleis make excellent candidates to compare and contrast. For one thing, Athens and Sparta both had starkly different governments, Athens had a government where Athenian land owning males could voice their opinions, while Spartahad an oligarchy. Athens had one of the best navies for the time period, while Sparta had one of the strongest land forces, the Spartiates. Also, Athens cared more for luxury items than Sparta and Athens pursued knowledge instead of military power, unlike Sparta. In Sparta there was very little value placed on luxury items, until the fourth century BCE, when aristocratic families became wealthy, and male children were taken at the age of seven to be trained as warriors. The reason for this was because the main focus of life to Sparta was their military, which allowed them to maintain control over the helots and maintain public order, and anything that did not help the military was considered to not be very useful. While in Athens there was a heavy value placed on luxury items and a high value on aristocratic ideals. This was because the main focus in Athens was the pursuit of knowledge and prosperity. Many well known philosophers came from Athens, such as Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates. In both of these poleis, the governments tried to prevent class distinctions between civilians. Part of the reason Spartans did not have many luxuries was because everyone in Sparta was considered equal in status and the government wanted to discourage the development of social and class distinctions. While in Athens, it showed that the commoners were displeased that the aristocrats had more luxuries than they did so they ended up rebelling, which in turn caused Athenian democracy to become the government so all Athenian land owning males had a fair ... The short story Poe had written involved an intricate murder scheme, where the victim would be lured into a corner of a labyrinth of catacombs, chained to the wall, and then sealed off with a brick wall. While many would not consider this violenceby any conventional means, it is still violence Poe had written into the story to contribute to the overall meaning of the passage as a whole. Firstly, the eerie setting and macabre mood Poe establishes in The Cask of Amontilladoshould be emphasized. As soon as Montresor and Fortunado both step into the catacombs, the story becomes increasingly grim. The motto of Montresor s family is Nemo me impune lacessit, meaning, No one provokes me with impunity. From this, Montresor s motive for murder becomes clear: some time in the past, his family was attacked in some form, upsetting him, and driving him into killing Fortunado to live up to his family s motto. • 31. The Element Of Moral Philosophy By James Rachels In the book, The Element of Moral Philosophy , James Rachels explores the several criticisms of Utilitarianism. In this essay, I will touch on these criticisms, outlining the major implications they propose to Utilitarianism. I will also explain why many of the notions proposed against Utilitarianism are self serving, and instead serve to improve the general good of a minority population, which contradicts the Utilitarian theory of equating moral aptitude to the general good of a majority population, and that in this respect a greater consequence is achieved. Lastly, I will demonstrate how many societal values have a Utilitarian basis, which proves that Utilitarianismcan be salvaged in the face of most criticisms. In substance, the nature of Utilitarianism is derived of consequence. Utilitarianism proposes that the outcome of an act should suggest whether or not said act is morally correct. Many philosophers disagree, and believe that the consequence of an act does little to implicate morality. For example, there are numerous crimes committed daily. Some of these crimes remain undiscovered and therefore result in zero negative consequence. The text specifically outlines a particular situation wherein a peeping Tom spies on a woman without her ever finding out. If the woman never finds out, then she has no reason to be upset, and in contrast the peeping Tom will be evidently pleased. This results in a positive outcome, or positive consequence, and therefore would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The shorter the time, the faster your reactions. That s if you were paying attention in the first place! Therefore, these parts will reach high blood alcohol levels relatively quickly. Alcohol distributes through body water mainly. This means that men, who have on average more body water then women, generally achieve lower alcohol concentration. Men have more body water for two reasons: they are heavier and they have less body fat per kilogram of body weight. Consequently, the same quantity of alcohol per person usually results in a higher blood alcohol concentration in women as compared to men. Alcohol is primarily broken down or metabolized in the liver through two steps mainly: firstly, it is broken down or oxidized to acetaldehyde by an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenises. Acetaldehyde is very toxic and held responsible for most of the harmful effects of excessive alcohol consumption. Secondly, acetaldehyde is efficiently converted into acetate by an enzyme called acetaldehyde dehydrogenises. Acetate is a harmless compound, which is used for energy generation. The total amount of ethanol broken down per hour is estimated in the range of 0,1 0,3 gram per kilogram body weight per hour. This is usually translated into 6 9 gram ethanol per hour for a healthy subject. These fundamental processes are common to all human beings and sufficient to break down moderate quantities of alcohol. However, environmental factors (drinking habits) and genetic factors ... This particular genre traces back to the works from the late eighteenth century by writers such as Phillis Wheatley to later reaching early high points with slave narratives and the Harlem Renaissance, and thus continuing today with authors such as Colson Whitehead and Maya Angelou. Among the themes and issues explored within African Americanliterature are the roles of African Americans within the larger American society, African American culture, racism, slavery, and equality. African American writing has also tended to incorporate oral forms such as spirituals, gospel music, jazz, and rap. Dating back to the pre Revolutionary War period, African American writers have engaged in a creative dialogue with American letters. The result is a literature rich in culture and social insight. These pieces offer illuminating assessments of American identities as well as its history. Since the time of early slavery African American literature has been overlooked within the literature criticism. This essay thrives to show that within the English profession African American literature does belong alongside the great works such as A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and poetry as A Road less taken by Robert Frost. The dream life is full of happiness because you have the perfect job, an abundance of money to afford the best of things, and a magic wand to wave and solve any issue that comes your way. This would be considered in today s society a person who is very successful, and most of all, happy. This may not always be true. In Shawn Achor s book, The HappinessAdvantage, he describes happiness as a feeling that everyone should have regardless of the situation they are in or the problems they are dealing with. He discusses that happiness is the precursor to success, and not to be confused with the opposing view. The 3 main theories that Achor believes will give the greatest happiness advantage is The Zorro Circle, The Fulcrum and the Lever, and the Social Investment. Achor suggests that happiness comes before success because happiness will give you a better outlook, and success may not always intend that happiness is to follow. Our most positive emotions include hope, love, pride and joy. Each of these emotions are different according to the person experiencing them. All of them relate to happiness, which can help us to be in a better mood in the future as well as in the present (Achor, p.40). Happiness should be our main focus in everything we do. To be fair, developing a good understanding of stakeholder motivations is extremely challenging because of the complex nature of the sector, which itself arises from special sector characteristics. On the biophysical side, forest resources contribute multiple benefits and services; yet the resource (even though it is technically renewable) renews only quite slowly and many services can be irreversibly lost if the resource stock falls below a critical minimum. On the social front, this is a sector which is characterized by unclear ownership and access rights and conflicts between traditional and modern legal rights. The resource generates multiple benefits for multiple users and often these are in conflict. Unlike other resources, forests provide a wide range of public benefits ( watershed protection, carbon sequestration, biodiversity protection, and ecosystem resilience) only when they are preserved; and they provide private benefits (timber rents) principally when they are harvested. This regime can be analysed using the 1D displacement equation for intermediate values of water saturation (Eq. 8) which suggests that at intermediate values of water saturation at the producer,S_w^*≤0.5, the WOR time relationship is described with a linear function of logW vs. logt with slope1.
