Fresco is a type of mural painting done on freshly applied plaster on walls and ceilings. Some of the earliest known frescoes date back to around 1500 BC on the island of Crete in Greece. In India, the oldest known frescoes are located in the Ajanta Caves and were painted between 200 BC and 600 AD depicting stories from the Buddha's life. In the 20th century, Mexican artists like Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Siqueiros renewed interest in fresco painting through their large murals known as Mexican Muralism. Today, frescoes also include graffiti art seen on walls around the world.
