Foreign Language And Its Effects On American Society
The foreign language deficit in America serves to be inimical to the future of American society.
America s foreign language curriculum displays a more than lackluster approach in relation to those
upheld in other countries. Unlike our European counterparts, most American school systems only
require that students acquire two foreign language credits to graduate. Most of the time, these courses
are either taught by some athletic coach who could really care less if you know how to conjugate the
verb ir correctly, or by an overly passionate foreigner who spends the class time intensively explaining
said conjugations to a class full of seniors who just want to graduate. In some states, this requirement
is even nonexistent.
As someone who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most of the tacticians throughout Europe and Asia have procured a mastery of several different
languages, English to be included. In accordance with American history, only half of our presidents
(21 to be precise) had a command on a foreign language, sometimes demonstrating a fluency in both
reading and writing in multiple foreign languages. The majority of these men held office between the
18th and 19th centuries, when language retained greater value in society. The presidents of the 20th
and 21st century do not have the same qualities.
As stated in David Skorton and Glenn Altschuler s article entitled America s Foreign Language Deficit
, learning a foreign language is necessary...
To prosper economically and to improve relations with other countries, U.S. Secretary of Education
Arne Duncan declared, Americans need to read, speak and understand other languages. ...18% of
Americans report speaking a language other than English, while 53% of Europeans (and increasing
numbers in other parts of the world) can converse in a second language.
Multiple studies exist that display the lack of effort exhibited in America in terms of language
learning. According to the Forbes article, the amount of private elementary schools that offer foreign
language courses dropped from 31 to 25 percent, while instruction in public elementary schools
dropped from 24 percent to 15 percent. Even the percentage of middle schools with foreign language
programs decreased from 75 to 58 percent.

Clapp s Assessment Of American Consumer Culture
I think Clapp s assessment of American consumer culture are accurate and insightful. An examination
of history and our modern cultural trends reveals the validity of Clapp s assessment. For example, in
the nineteenth century pictographic and flashy advertising taught the consumerism lifestyle to
Americans and transformed America into a society of consumerism. Consumers, in short, were made,
not born (Clapp, 1996, p. 366). From the 1800s to the present day advertisers continue to actively and
aggressively sell a lifestyle with their product. [Modern consumerism is] a fun house world of ever
proliferating wants and exquisitely unsatisfied desire, consumption entails most profoundly the
cultivation of pleasure, the pursuit of novelty, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kilbourne demonstrates three major main criticisms of advertising. First, advertising objectifies
people and objects for the purpose of sales. This critique promotes products as more important than
people and exploits human deeds and desires. Kilbourne offers ample evidence to support her first
criticism of advertising. For example, Kilbourne examines advertisement such as the Thule car rack
which humorously places more value on sports equipment been a child s life is evidence of the trend
that advertising is objectif[ing] people...trivializ[ing and exploiting] our most heartfelt moments and
relationships. Every emotion [,person, animal, and natural phenomenon] is used to sell us something
(Kilbourne, 2006, 369). Second according to Kilbourne advertising promotes and perpetuates the
unnatural passion for products rather than personal relationship. Advertising corrupts relationships and
then offers us products, both as solace and as substitutes for the intimate human connection we all
long for and need (Kilbourne, 2006, 370). Within this concept, advertising also commits cultural rape
by manipulating sacred symbols for their utilization as emotional leverage in advertising. Third,
advertisements damage the personality and structure of culture. For example the Giwch in tribe s
traditional culture was almost erased by the introduction of advertising through television. As
multinational chains replace local character, we end up in a world in which everyone is Gapped and
Starbucked...[Thus] rampant commercialism undermines our physical and psychological health, our
environments and our civic life, and creates a toxic society (Kilbourne, 2006, 371), which robs
individuals of cultural and personal diversity. Based on the evidence presented by Kilbourne, I
strongly agree with all three of these

Nonprofit Organizations Case Study
There are many international nonprofit and non governmental organizations that educate and intervene
with the global healthcare, with this and several other issues; there is also a huge impact pertaining
within the issues that lye under the United States healthcare system. Nonprofit and non governmental
organizations strive to improve and analyze all the issues, there is much effort put in behind all of the
organizations that are associated with improving education and global health care.
Nonprofit organizations are defined as an organization(s) that run off of donations and/or fundraiser.

The Governor Of Southern-Bough Summary
In the story, The Governor of Southern Bough, a man goes through a series of events that reflect the
views of Confucianism. Within the stories, the philosophy of Confucianism is being stated through out
the story by the relationships between the characters. The five basic human relationships can be seen
in these examples below.
1. The emperor and minister relationship can be seen on page 284 of the text with the conversation
Chunyu Fen has with the king. Now that he had to put up with groundless complaints and defamation,
he was very unhappy , this quote shows his obligation and respect that he has for the current king.
Even with all the hard work he did in Southern kingdom he did not let this inflate his ego. He remind
loyal to the king that has given Chunyu Fen his position of power.
2. The father and son ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Older brother and younger brother relationships does not go into great details in the story, but it is
mentioned briefly on page 283. In the text it stated, In those years, Chunyu Fen had five sons and five
daughters. The sons were all given positions by means of the official hereditary benefits, the daughters
all got engaged with sons related to the royal family . This text shows the rank the family system has
from sons to daughters.
5. The friend and friend connections is the last relationship in Confucianism. This relationship is one
based on trust . The second paragraph on page 282 is Chunyu Fen given the king all the reason he trust
Zhou Bian and Tian Zihua. Chunyu Fen trust these individuals based on their skills and ho long the
group has been friend for ten years.
In the end of the story, when Chunyu Fen returns from the Southern Bough, this is more of a personal
change in his life. After his friends death Chunyu Fen did not drink and have sex (pp. 286). The
change in his life was a way for Chunyu Fen to find balance in his life from all the bad choices he
made in his younger years. So, this moment reflects Taoism more than

The Rights Of Women And People Of Color
In the past two centuries the primary groups which had to fight for such rights were women and
people of color. Now in the twenty first century, a new group which knows no color and/or gender are
verbally attacked for such ideas. This community is the homosexual community. Although there is
more of a tolerance of homosexual citizens, in general they are still discriminated because often times
one is not willing to accept a different lifestyle but rather practice ignorance to the situation. The idea
of love for one another is nothing new.
It is something that one learns overtime and practices over time. It is a fundamental human right for
one to receive respect from peers despite being different. But rather punish one for practicing ... Show

Fr. Osterreicher argues in his essay Nostra Aetate that all people, despite many different backgrounds
are all the same, All men form but one community. 1 This is because all stem from one stock which
God created to the people the entire earth (cf. Acts 17:26) (Osterreicher 2). This is not mainly a
religious issue but a personal issue that affects us all and for that a call to tolerance means
understanding one individual and his/her life. Another way that such a just world is possible is if one
refuses to be ignorant and believes in stereotypes.
As human beings, we are called to love one another and respect another as well as opinions and
lifestyle and yet it is often difficult to do such a thing. There are many reasons why it is difficult to
accept a person because of who they are. The most common reason is as said before, one is taught the
various prejudices about a group. This happens for many reasons. Often times the ignorance is bliss
mantra wins out in philosophy and becomes the normal thought. One is ignorant because one is afraid
to challenge the status quo due to retribution. The community is however not the only ones at fault.
Usually it also the stereotypes told by outside sources that cause such fear and lack of knowledge.
Such is the case for homosexuals in America and other parts of the world. In the 1980 s it was
rumored that the AIDS epidemic was started with homosexual

Ideal Woman
An Ideal Woman
In high school, I was given the task of interviewing someone that lived during the Great Depression.
Instantly my grandmother came to my mind. Ruth LaCoste was born in 1930. Unlike my grandfather
who was always telling tales, she never spoke of her childhood. I knew she was my ideal of what a
woman should be. Until this interview, I did not know how true that was. She can best be summed up
by a quote from GB Shaw, Mrs. Warren s Profession 1893, People are always blaming their
circumstances for what they are. I don t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world
are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can t find them, make
them. In short, Ruth LaCoste Rebardi represents perseverance, independence, and family. She
symbolizes my ideal woman.
Ruth LaCoste Rebardi represents perseverance by not being a product of her circumstances.
September 8, 1930, Hans and Julia Liner LaCoste delivered there second daughter. Ruth LaCoste is
the fourth of seven children. Hans and Julia were uneducated trappers in the bayous of South
Louisiana. Spending their summers on Bayou Schaffer. Then moving their houseboat to Deer Island
Bayou to trap Nutria during the winter months. Consequently, Ruth knew what it was like to be
hungry as a child. In
their home it was feast or famine. Not that there was ever a feast. Her undergarments were made from
flour sacks. It took everyone working to provide for the family. Perhaps a

Sex, Drugs, Disasters, and the Extinction of Dinosaurs by...
Sex, Drugs, Disasters, and the Extinction of Dinosaurs is written by Stephen Jay Gould, professor of
geology and zoology at Harvard. This essay is one of more than a hundred articles on evolution,
zoology, and paleontology published by Gould in national magazines and journals. It tells about
scientific proposals for the extinction of dinosaurs a confusing but an exciting problem that humanity
tries to solve. By analyzing and describing each of the claims for the reptiles demise sex, drugs, and
disasters Gould differentiates bad science from good science and explains what makes some theories
silly speculations, while the other, a testable hypothesis. Any hypothesis, Gould says, begins with the
collection of facts. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Large amounts of iridium a chemical element that is not a part of the Earth s crust composition were
originally found in rocks of Europe and United States, and have been found everywhere ever since.
Iridium, common in meteorites, is a testable evidence of the disaster hypothesis. Gould continues that
the Cretaceous debacle, which is one of five episodes of mass dying, occurred at the same time as the
large comet might have smashed into the Earth. The author believes this is not merely a coincidence,
rather, it is a proof of the cause effect relationship. The demise of a wide range of habitats along with
the extinction of dinosaurs gives an inestimable advantage to the disaster theory over other claims, the
author adds. The comet struck the Earth, and habitats, from terrestrial to marine, died with geological
suddenness. Finally, this hypothesis has had an impact on the study of an atomic war and its
consequences. A nuclear war, Gould says, may cause a huge drop in temperatures and result in the
extinction of humanity. Testable evidence, study, development, contribution all this makes good
science. The drug theory is a useless speculation and an example of bad science. Dinosaurs, it says,
either couldn t taste the bitterness of plants that contained psychoactive substances or had livers
ineffective to detoxify psychedelic agents. The author of the theory suggested that the overdose had
been a factor of the dinosaurs extinction.

Crystallization Synthesis
Before crystallization, the unknown weighed 0.83 g, it was white, soft, and had small ball clumps
almost producing a salt like appearance. About 70 mL of ethanol was used to purify the unknown.
Within the final stages of fully dissolving the ethanol with the unknown, the unknown started to
crystallize quickly, therefore, no ice bath was needed. After the unknown air dried, it was clear, soft,
flaky, and it looked like ice. In terms of purity of the solid, recrystallization worked because it
dissolved both the impurities and the compound within ethanol. The impurities were removed and the
pure solution was left behind after being filtered. In terms of yield, recrystallization worked because
there was a significant amount of the unknown after it has been crystallized. ... Show more content on

When identifying the unknown compound, the top three predictions were: acenaphthene,
phenoxyacetic acid, and benzil. Based on the melting points (see Table II.), the unknown solid
compound was most likely to be acenaphthene. Before the melting process, the unknown was
observed to be white, flaky, shiny, and soft. When it was mixed with other compounds, the
characteristics began to change. For instance, when the unknown was mixed with acenaphthene, the
solid was grainy and white. When it was mixed with benzil, the solution was green and glittery. Last
but not least, when the unknown was mixed with phenoxyacetic Acid, the solid was powdery and
white. Through observations, the unknown dissolved better with the acenaphthene and phenoxyacetic
acid as it resulted in a homogeneous

The Battle Of The Alamo
The Battle of the Alamo is probably the most famous battle to take place in the history of, and in the
state of, Texas. The battle has given Texans the will to persevere against tough odds and the courage to
endure through seemingly impossible situations for many generations. Many a Texan would draw
inspiration during the fights following the defeat at the Alamo. This inspiration eventually led them to
victory during the Texas Revolution following the Battle of San Jacinto. Had the Texas military
correctly utilized their intelligence and combat assets available to them at the time, they would have
been able to properly reinforce the Alamo. This would have allowed Texan leadership to develop an
effective strategy to defeat the Mexican army ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Santa Anna was elected President of Mexico in 1833. In 1834 he repealed the constitution and
established himself as a dictator, which played a major factor in the Texas Revolution. With the
constitution repealed, the Texians did not have the same benefits as they did when they first settled in
Mexico. Under the oppressive rule of Santa Anna, the Texians began to rebel (Callcott, 2010).
The Battle of Gonzales
The apprehension between the Texians and Mexicans began to shift towards a war when a Mexican
force led by Francisco De Castañeda was instructed to take a cannon from the rebels in the city of
Gonzales. Castañeda was instructed to try to retrieve the cannon without force in order to prevent it
from being used against the Mexican authorities and because the slightest act of aggression would
likely push the Texians over the edge. The Texians, led by John Henry Moore, refused to cooperate.
They even attempted to negotiate with Castañeda and his force to convince them to side with the
Texas cause, as they shared the same principles in regards to Santa Anna s dictatorship. After
Castañeda refused, because as a soldier, he was obligated to follow orders, a minor battle ensued.
Although it was almost insignificant, it gave the Texians a spark and the rebel cause was able to
increase recruiting efforts for the larger altercations that would occur in the next few months (Hardin,
2010).

How Advertising Affects The World Wide Web Essay
I will now introduce an extension that individuals can install on their browsers to hide all of the
banners and advertisements when they are navigating the World Wide Web. When an individual is
navigating the web they will see advertisements that might catch their attention and the user might
click on it, taking them to another site that might have malware or virus on them. This site may also
install something on their computer without them noticing. This will also block those pop ups that
show when you are navigating on a certain website and you won t have to worry about something
showing up that you don t want to see. Another positive thing that Ad Blockers do is that they will
block all of the advertisements from videos. Blocking advertisements will have the websites you are
visiting look cleaner by removing all of the items that shouldn t be on there. The websites that you are
visiting will also load quicker because it isn t reading the scripts of the advertisements.

first club is a student run volunteer organization called Vision that focused on work in our immediate
and surrounding communities. The second organization I received membership into was the Mark
Twain Chapter of the National Honors Society. This society was composed of an elite group of
students that had high regards for character, service, and education. In order to apply one had to have a
GPA of a 3.5 or higher and once you were able to apply you must have 30 recorded hours of
community service and then an essay explaining yourself in terms of character, service, and education.
Once welcomed into the society, we did volunteer work for the community and other events to help
other students improve their abilities in a variety of school topics. The volunteer work from both clubs
included helping and participating at our annual blood drive, relay for life, food drives, Christmas
present drives, helping elderly care for their lawns, and cleaning up our town s schools grounds. Each
project involved a group effort from everyone involved and we ended up making a huge difference for
our community. I still continue to help out in my community by doing beach clean ups and food
drives.

The Segregation Of African American Culture
I feel for the most part the characteristics in this united or consistent with my experience in the African
American culture. Slavery did set us back some years, but I have to say it has made us stronger. Most
of us had to face great obstacles to get in a good place, but no matter what we keep making it through
the adversity. After slavery, we as a culture had to make it through the jim crow laws. This sparked the
civil right movement that gave blacks a voice to speak out against the injustice that had been quietly
dealt with for years. In most of these different processes blacks had to face a criminal justice system
that never seemed to be on their side. Blacks had to literally practice before the went up to testify in
court in the justice system because of the very rigid injustice presented in courts. Blacks did earn their
right to vote in the justice system, and they did earn their freedom in the justice system, but the justice
system was geared for whites and not blacks, but through actual quoting the actual law, blacks was
able to fight for their freedom. The actual law did protect its people. but it is what people inject into
laws the are discriminating. Later, came the muslim movement that made blacks realise that they
control their own destiny. African Americans has even came up as for in the middle class, but the
problem is that it is a big gap between the low class and the middle. Most Blacks feel they cannot trust
the police, and I believe it is from the past.

The Characteristics Of Characterism In The Doll s House
The Doll s House by Katherine Mansfield is an example of a modern short story because it fits all of
the four criteria we discussed in class. The story emphasizes subtle characterization, implies facts and
psychological truths, emphasizes revelation, and has examples of dramatic irony.
The first criteria of a modern short story is that the story emphasizes subtle characterization rather
than fast paced plot. The Doll s House does emphasize this subtle characterization in many ways. One
example of this is how Katherine Mansfield lets us know how Isabel has a sense of entitlement for
being the oldest in a rich family. She does not state this directly, however, she subtly tells us this by
through the dialog of Isabel, like when she said, I m to tell, said Isabel, because I m the eldest. ...
Isabel was bossy, but she was always right... (page 1, paragraph 8). A fast paced plot is not present in
the story because it is a slice of life story, or a story that portrays the everyday lives of the characters.
There is nothing particularly special happening in the story, so it emphasizes on these subtle
characterizations instead.
The second criteria of a modern short story is that the author implies rather than states facts and
psychological truths. One example of this is when the author tells us how close they are because they
have nobody else who will talk to them but each other. The author does not go right out and say this,
however, she implies this through her characterization by saying, The Kelveys never failed to
understand each other, (page 2, paragraph 4) after talking about how the other children left them out
because of their parents, and talking about how they are always together. Mansfield also implies the
fact that the Kelvey sisters father left their family. She does this by saying, But where was Mr.
Kelvey? Nobody knew for certain. (page 2, paragraph 3) This implies that he might have walked out
on the family before he went to jail. The author also implies the shame that Lil felt over her father, and
her mother s job. She does not say this directly, but when the girls were talking to the Kelvey sisters
about their father, the author says, ...Lil only gave her silly, shamefaced smile.

Why Do Gamete Cells Come Into Play
Do you ever wonder how babies are made? Well, that s where gamete cells come into play. Gamete
cells are haploid cells, or reproductive cells. These cells possess one pair of chromosomes from the
parent. During meiosis, haploid cells are divided and the chromosomes fuse together producing
genetically new instructions. Gamete cells play a crucial role in the development of a baby.
Meiosis is the process in which the gamete cells turn from haploid to diploid. Meiosis involves eight
stages: Prophase 1, Metaphase 1, Anaphase 1, Telophase 1, Prophase 2, Metaphase 2, Anaphase 2, and
Telophase 2. Prophase 1 is when chromosomes cross over. The chromosomes exchange genetic
information making new and distinct traits. Metaphase 1 is when the crossed over

Hybrid Contracts for Small Business
Hybrid Contracts for Small Business
Introduction
There are many different forms of contracts in which the CEO of a small local business could use to
try to acquire business from the local Navy base. Most traditional contracts are composed of either
fixed price contracts or cost reimbursement type contractual arrangements. However, a new type of
contract has emerged that offers small businesses alternatives to the traditional bidding structures. The
new alternatives to traditional contracts offer small business a great deal more flexibility in their
design. This acts as an incentive for small businesses to bid on various contracts that they might have
been uncomfortable with in previous models. The hybrid contract provides a pathway to new
opportunities for small business. This paper will briefly outline some of the types of contracts
available and discus how they might apply to a small business.
Types of Contracts
The fixed price contract can be used as an effective, efficient, and accountable contract too. Fixed
pricing is typically used when the product or service is being transferred that is relatively easy to
determine a fair market value. For example, a fixed price contract might be used to purchase office
equipment because the price is not generally subject to a large and subjective interpretation. It also is
efficient because it cuts out some of the administrative burden that is placed on the relevant parties
(U.S. Government, N.d.). In more complex fixed price

The Lack Of Psychical Activity
The lack of psychical activity is another growing issue. Some people are quick to blame computers,
television, and other sources as the driving forces behind childhood obesity. Food for thought: Who

become built in babysitters for some parents Television and the Internet may contribute to obesity
rates a little; however, these are not the only factors that decide whether a child becomes obese. In
fact, according to the WHO survey, parents are just as much at fault for making their children obese as
outside influences are. Mothers tipped the scale with 91 percent of them being primary caregivers in
the telephone survey, and were the ones responsible for the foods offered to, cooked for (and chosen
by) the children. A parent allowing access to so many choices of unhealthy snacks convenient foods,
and sitting in front of the television or Internet is only part of the problem. Medical care and
nutritional education of the children is obviously the parents responsibility, but so many parents are
careless about basic nutrition and the need for exercise. In addition, how many parents just don t have
the gumption to battle with their preschoolers regarding what they eat? Some parents have the attitude
that at least they are eating SOMETHING . We ve all been there, at our wit s end just trying to get a

Blended Family Relationships
stepfamilies may sometimes have lack of parental warmth and negative interactions, which leads to
disruptiveness and/or antisocial behaviors. It takes time for the adolescent to adjust to the loss of a
parent in a household.
Adolescents will experience their custodial parent being unavailable, which makes the adolescent feel
like they have no parental support. Also, they will deal with stress not only from the divorce but from
remarrying. The adolescent who has a relationship with a non parental adult, friends, or an attachment
to school may counterpoise a stressful environment. Researchers found that girls are more likely to
confide in friends about their situation at home. Boys tend to spend time with their friends without
sharing what is on their mind, or spend time by themselves. Building a relationship with others as such
as neighbors will increase the chance of the adolescent not having a negative outcome. Adolescents in
divorced or blended families will be more likely to experience negative outcomes, because of the lack
of parental support (Rodgers Rose, 2002).
Not many individuals are aware of how many adolescents experience divorce or remarriage.

A Look at the Final Chapter of Timothy Glander’s Book,...
The final chapter of Timothy Glander s book, Origins of Mass Communications Research During the
American Cold War: Educational Effects and Contemporary Implications (2000) stands as a
disappointing example of academic research becoming hijacked by the author s personal opinion.
Focusing on the hidden nature of propaganda in American life, his concluding chapter presents a very
drastic view of the individuals who crafted the academic subject now known as mass communications.
I see the need for investigating the status quo, for digging into the motivations behind the images and
data churned out in the mass media, and for questioning the trivia facts that become common
knowledge. For that reason, I am wary of completely discrediting the ... Show more content on

Circling any solid thesis, he claims that generations of Americans have been brainwashed by mass
communications, ruining any genuine community life (2000, p. 214), a vague picture of the pre Cold
War era that never becomes defined. The Cold War era may have featured significant changes in the
way American communities functioned, but summoning up a sitcom image instead of genuine
examples to support one of his key arguments simply weakens his case. His one clearly stated goal is
to revive the association of the phrase mass communications with the word propaganda a word that
appears thirty times in these fourteen pages.
Making the unfortunate choice of attempting to eliminate detractors of his claim without addressing
their concerns, Glander frames them as being lost in the propaganda of their time. His claim, people
still remain largely unable to...understand the powerful ways in which [television] is used to shape and
control their thinking (2000, p. 207) means every generation since the Cold War is so permeated by
mass communications that they are now incapable of external analysis. Using this logic, critics of his
argument are brainwashed by this new establishment, a victim of social control that they cannot see or
change, leaving us in a vicious circle at the mercy of the media.
Two accompanying book reviews echo my concerns with this logic. Found in History of Education
Quarterly (2001) and

Bacon s Rebellion and Challenge
Bacon s Rebellion and Challenge: Bacon s rebellion is a civil war that erupted between the English
and the Indians in the Chesapeake whose main cause was land and labor. Since the English men were
facing hunger, they decided to go out in search of greener pastures that included the search for new
lands to do farming and later change it to cash. The farming itself involved looking a place that they
would plant tobacco and as they were in this process, they came along some Indian communities who
were already residing at their (English) border. That is when the conflict began whereby the Indian
communities were beaten up and forced to flee from the area. This not only affected the Indians but
also former servants who had worked with the colonialists and were part and parcel of the colonists as
they ended up being landless. During this war, Bacon refused to send any troop that would assist in
stopping the conflict leading to loss of lives and discrimination by the Indians. The Southerners were
not needed by the government and even those who held top positions were ordered to be killed,
removed forcefully from their positions, and sold into slavery. Since these individuals were under
Bacon s power, they had no choice than to comply with the order. This war led to loss of properties
and houses hence the Southerners became displaced and they even lost children due to the bad
weather and sleeping in the cold. In the process of all these Berkeley called for an election to be

They re just wankers. We re the ones what were colonised by wankers. We couldn t even pick a decent

Irvine Welsh, Trainspotting
The cultural ties to empire are not so easy to efface as the political ones. This is perhaps one of the
most important lessons the world has learned from the mass movement towards independence on the
part of European colonies in the past half century. Even we Americans, more than two hundred years

Yet an explicit affirmation of this hatred is not necessary; the reader is quick to appreciate the irony
and utter absurdity of her situation and that of Antigua. Kincaid makes us want to condemn the
imperialistic attitudes which fostered this indoctrination of English values and also the supposition
that this culture was somehow inherently superior to any other. By putting her readers in her own
position, and by appealing to their sense of the absurd, Kincaid is very effectively able to elicit
sympathy.
Kincaid was never prepared for England as it is; all she had to go on was the idea of England that was
presented to her as a child. She never had a single real tie to England: No one I knew had ever been
and returned to tell me about it. All the people I knew who had gone to England had stayed there
(356). In England she is conscious of the fact that she is an outsider. She is made to feel this way by
the difference she perceives between the English and herself: Their skins were so pale, it made them
look so fragile, so weak, so ugly . . . they didn t like me, and it occurred to me that their dislike for me
was one of the few things they agreed upon (357). The racial difference breeds a mutual distrust. She
is made to feel she can never truly be English because of her race, ancestry, and the history of

The Theory, Differential Association Theory And...
This paper examines the concepts of criminological theory, the history of criminological theory,
differential association theory, and the effectiveness of Boys Girls Club of America. The basis of
criminological theory is to provide an explanation for what causes crime and criminal behavior. The
differential association theory was a leading sociological crime theory that was created by Edwin H.
Sutherland. This theory argues that delinquent behavior is learned through interactions and
communication with other peers. The purpose of this theory was to develop a theory that could be
applied universally among all crimes and criminal behaviors, including white collar crime. Differential
association argues that delinquent behavior is learned from an excess of definitions favorable to law
violation, and vice versa for nondelinquent behaviors. This theory has its fair share of criticisms; the
testability has been scrutinized for the inability to operationalize the concepts of differential
association. Specific mentoring programs, such as the Boys Girls Club of America, were created to
establish a positive environment for youth for development. The Boys Girls Club s mission is to
provide developmental guidance to youth to reach their full potential as responsible citizens. Members
have expressed that these clubs provide a caring, nurturing environment, an atmosphere to learn
positive behaviors, and assistance in developing diverse skills and abilities. This

Leadership and Organization Structure Essay
Leadership and Organization Structure All organizations have a structure; criminal justice is much as
the military in regards to having a chain of command that delegates his/her authority downward from
the major command element (Stohr Collins, 2014). Max Weber defined the characteristics of a
bureaucracy as the following: there is a hierarchy of authority that has several levels where each level
is controlled by the one above them and includes formal procedures (Stillman, 2010; Stohr Collins,
2014). Each position is divided with no overlap of duties and the work environment would be
impersonal with employment decisions based on the employees technical qualifications (Stillman,
2010; Stohr Collins, 2014).

Within law enforcement, the hierarchy would look something like this: chief, assistant chief, major,
lieutenant on down to the line officers. Courts would have a judge, prosecutor, defense attorney,
bailiff, clerk, etc. and corrections would be warden, colonel, lieutenant colonel, major, captain,
lieutenant, sergeant and correctional officer (Stohr Collins, 2014). As you can see law enforcement
and corrections is very similar to the military rank structure. Directives will flow from the top echelon
to the middle and then to the lowest level. In law enforcement, it is a general thought that at certain
times of the month speeding tickets seem to increase and we jokingly say the officer must be trying to
make his monthly quota. If this statement is indeed true, then, it implies that the supervisor is checking
the number of written tickets, therefore, placing more emphasis on the quantity not the quality of
work. Holding employees accountable is paramount; however, when superiors are micromanaging,
valuable time is wasted. The time could have been utilized reviewing the results of the subordinate s
actions. When law enforcement officers are forced to adopt

If someone were to ask you if you could imagine a world where the United States was a fascist
dictatorship, you would most likely, laugh in his or her face. After all, the United States is the poster
child of a capitalistic society and even has that American dream. What people don t realize is that in
1933 a group of elite businessmen and some powerful companies tried to plot the staging of a coup
with the help of a Marine Corps Major General by the name of Smedley Butler. This may have been
plotted because of the financial situation the United States was in at the time, and was eventually
brought to the attention of Congress during a hearing through his testimony. Also, because there is
evidence supporting this theory I do believe it; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

by two members of the American Legion: Bill Doyle, and Gerald C. MacGuire. This Legion operated
under the guise of a veteran s rights society. The men, initially approached Butler to speak at a nearing
meeting; they explained that they were hoping that Butler s speech would persuade the others
members that they needed to remove the current management something that could be called
conditioning or a sort of test. Even though Butler listened to what they had to say, he had refused on
the grounds that he did not want to interfere. Coming up with a new plan the two men approached
Butler again, this time discreetly offering him $100,000 in bank deposits. After Butler arrived, in the
spectator gallery the Legionnaires were to leap to their feet demanding he speak. MacGuire then
produced the prepared speech he wanted Butler to give. The speech given was suspicious sounding in
nature, it was to convince the veterans, who were due a second bonus payment, that if they were not
paid in money backed by gold, their bonuses would be compromised. Another attempt to condition
and/or test on Butler to see if he could do their bidding. These men underestimated or pretty much
ignored Butler s support for Roosevelt and his patriotism, which, for a fact, wasn t a secret.

Health and Social Care Level 3 Unit 2 Essay
Musab Omar Unit 2 ID No 20235744 Know Discriminatory practices in health and social care
Discriminatory practice in health and social care happens for many reasons including some important
factors that are normally the cause of discriminatory practice for example a person may be
discriminated against because on the basis of their diversity. One important discriminatory practice is
because of culture. A person s Culture is important to them and identifies who they are in the world. It
is developed within the social group they are raised in, and can change when they are mature enough
to decide for their selves what culture best suit them. In addition respecting a person s culture is ...

Another important discrimination practice in health and social care is the age of an individual. Age
discrimination happens when someone is treated unfavourably because of their age, without
justification, or is harassed and victimised because of their age. Age discrimination also happens when
someone is denied something because of their age, for example there were controversies regarding
giving older people drugs because of their shorter life expectancy, due to their age. Some people have
argued that the money would be better spent on drugs for younger people. This is a massive
discrimination against older people. An example of age discrimination in a health and social setting is
that someone might not be provided a certain service because of their old age for example if they
apply for a job as a nurse they might refuse their application because of their old age. This is a type of
discrimination in a lot jobs but this was an example from a health and social service. Social class is
another important type in which discrimination is based upon. Our social class is apparent from the
place where we live. The higher the class, the better the place is kept and maintained. This inequality
has also infiltrated health and social care. For example members of the department of health
publication claim that the poor are more likely to get cancer than the rich, and their chances of
survival are lower too. However at the

Student Debt Crisis And The Housing Crisis
There is a critical financial trend in the United States: student debt is at an all time high. For the first
time in mid 2013, student debt rose to 830 billion, surpassing the credit card debt (Clemmitt). Many
economists and scholars compare the student debt crisis to the housing bubble, which resulted in a
nationwide recession 2008. In a senate hearing regarding the current student debt crisis, Illinois
Attorney General Lisa Madigan said, The warning signs are there, just like they were before the
housing crisis, and congress needs to act before it is too late (Bidwell). After graduation, many
students find it difficult to repay their debt, due to the bleak job market. According to a report
published on the financial website Smart money, ten percent student loans borrowers defaulted in
2010 (Clemmitt). The percent was larger for students that attended a for profit educational institution,
like a career college; fifteen percent of these students defaulted (Clemmitt). Although the default rates
do not contribute to the increasing student debt, one can compare it to the mortgage crisis when people
stopped paying their mortgages and the American economy crashed. This exemplifies the critical
problem that the student debt bubble if burst; it can have devastating impacts on the vulnerable
American economy. Three causes for the increase in student debt are due to recent trends in college
attendance, the increase of for profit colleges and the rise of tuition due to spending

This lab was not very fun, but it helped in learning the information. After this lab I learned how to find
the heat gained/lost and I also learned how to calculate the heat of combustion of the candle and the
molar heat of combustion of paraffin. Going into this lab I had no idea what these terms meant. After
research, I discovered that heat of combustion is the amount of energy released in burning completely
one mole of substance. My hypothesis heading into this experiment was that the closer the flame was
to the aluminum can, the higher the temperature/heat would be. This concept is pretty self explanatory
because fires are very hot and so if you put any object near a flame, the object will start to heat up.

Security And Privacy On The Internet Essay

Internet could be used by rivals or criminals just as a mean to access such information. If consider
such fact that almost any organization today uses Internet as it uses telephone, the scales of the issue
become global. As an example I would like to describe my experience working at a relatively small
fruit import company. The management of this firm gets information, makes orders, and carries almost
all negotiations via the e mail. To minimize the risk of any disclosure or loss of confidential data, it is
important to understand where the risks are, and implement office management practices and
appropriate technology to ensure all of your data remains confidential and secure, advises article IDS:
Classification (2002, December4). The potential loss or disclosure of information could occur through
various ways: vulnerabilities of operation systems (mostly Microsoft products), vulnerabilities of e
mail software, viruses and malicious software, and weak passwords. It is relatively easy to protect
electronic information in this case, but it does take some time and effort, which could be difficult for
managers, who do not have an expertise in computers. Next I would like to speak about effective
measures to protect data. Selection of security means should be based on an effective protection and
meanwhile should be convenient. As advises article Anonymity for lazy people (2004, June

Summary Of The Nacirema Culture
This article starts by stating that it is going to describe the magical beliefs and practices of the
Nacirema people and it seemingly does just that (Miner). The normality of the American way of living
is removed and just the facts are left to be described as a seemingly different culture. Upon rereading,
there are many facts that show the reader that the author is talking about Americans, but they are
easily skimmed over with the guise that this is some other culture. For Example, the author even states
that the Nacirema live in North America between Canada and Mexico (Miner). He even goes on to tell

the rituals are performed. He talks about how houses can be valued by how many bathrooms it has,
and how the walls of bathrooms are normally much nicer than the walls everywhere else in the house.

Although the young leader has stated that the Byungjin line (a program intended not only to boost the
country s economy but also to expands its nuclear weapons), does have at its core the people s interest
as a priority, the numbers are showing that only a small amount of North Korean citizens are
benefitting. Kim Jongun, has mentioned before that he wants the world to look up to his strong
country as a nuclear power, rather than just a mere country with multiple sanctions shouting big
words. This in the past has led to various consequences from hegemonies all around the world who
feel threatened by the implications of a young tyrant in charge of ICBMs. This is a clear example of
the security dilemma in which the entire world, the anarchy that it is, has to control minor nations that
strive for hegemony at the expense of the larger nations security and loss of leverage. Unfortunately, it
seems that despite the clear warnings from the superior nations, the North Korean dictator has no
interest in abiding by international rules and is far more fascinated with realist ideologies of
projections of power.

Examples Of Illusions Vs Reality In Othello
Ever since we were young, we were told about make believe things such as Santa Claus or the Tooth
Fairy. When we found out they didn t exist, we were probably devastated but it didn t ruin our lives. It
s easy to believe untrue things and often times people say, ignorance is bliss, but believing something
that isn t true can do more damage than good. Shakespeare s Othello is a prime example of how
falling to the belief of illusions versus reality is ultimately harmful to people. There are many times
throughout Othello where Iago tells lies and people believe him. Everyone thinks Iago is an honest
man. That s made especially clear when Othello, who has a good reputation, plainly states, Iago is
most honest, (2. 3. 7). The readers know, however, that Iago is far from honest. In front of Othello,
Desdemona, and others, it appears Iago loves and appreciates Othello but we know this is not true
because Iago clearly, and honestly, states, I follow him to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Roderigo is getting suspicious of Iago, so this will allow Iago to frame Roderigo and kill him off (5. 1.
71 73). Shortly after Roderigo is killed, Othello yells at Desdemona for cheating on him and despite
her claiming she didn t, he kills her. (5. 2. 99 104). All of this death and violence is happening because
of illusions Iago has set up. If Iago was honest, none of this would be a problem. The illusions Othello
has been fed are so dangerous that he has become a different, violent, murderous man, and he has yet
to even discover the truth. Being unaware of reality and, on the flip side, knowing of reality but not
being familiar with the lies, can get someone seriously hurt. Desdemona didn t know of the illusions
Othello believed, so she got killed. Once Othello realized he had been tricked, he felt the extreme
weight and guilt of killing the love of his life, and couldn t take it, so he killed himself (5. 2.

Both Angelou and Afrika contrast the situation of an African American and a white person, conveying
the emotions caused by racial discrimination, segregation, to well as making the reader empathize and
understand an African American in the setting of their poems in hopes of spreading their message
across, as both poets express that the whites in power usually don t care, nor are they able to
empathize. Caged Bird explores the impact of racial inequality by using an extended metaphor and
contrasting the situation of two birds to make the reader understand how the cage bird feels, and

assonance (But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams ) and rhyme to create an ominous beat and
draw attention to the specific lines for Caged Bird , for example, rhyming in the chorus (trill, still, hill)
to draw attention to the reader like a song, as well as the rhyming in stanza 2 (cage, rage), to
empathize the anger the caged bird feels. She also uses sibilance to create a hissing, unpleasant sound,
such as shadow shouts on a nightmare scream But the bird that stalks/down his narrow cage/can

Risk And Implement Falls Prevention Measures
More Staff is Not the Solution to Decrease Patient Falls Falls in an acute care setting lead the list of
injury related deaths and deaths in the elderly. A fall is defined as any event which patients are found
on the floor (observed or unobserved) or an unplanned lowering of the patient to the floor by staff or
visitors (Kalisch, Tschannen, and Lee, 2012, p. 6). Medicare and Medicaid changes in 2008 list falls as
one of the 10 hospital acquired conditions for which hospitals will no longer be reimbursed because
falls are considered preventable conditions. Joint Commission accredited hospitals are required to
assess for falls risk and implement falls prevention measures. Central to nursing ethics is the principle
of nonmaleficence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Patients being admitted to hospitals today have multiple co morbidities and are on a number of
medications making them a high risk for falls. Having an awareness of a patients diagnoses, pertinent
history and current medications is key in establishing an appropriate plan of care. Staffing shortages
can lead to omission of tasks such as a complete admission history and falls risk assessment. As
with any assignment, regardless of the amount of patients one is caring for, prioritization needs to be
utilized when completing tasks and making care decisions. Further work must be done to assist nurses
in completing necessary tasks...which may or may not mean additional staff members (Kalisch,
Tschannen Lee, 2012, p. 11). Developing strategies such as computerized reminders and checklists are
necessary to ensure complete and appropriate nursing care is delivered. (Kalisch, Tschannen Lee,
2012, p. 11) The lack of proper education on identification of falls risk and falls prevention measures
impact patient falls. Staff turnover and the use of temporary staff contribute to miscommunication or
lack of communication on processes such as fall prevention measures. Experience levels vary on any
given unit. Educational needs assessments should be routine and include temporary and new staff.
Authors Manojlovich, Sidani, Covell, and Antonakos (2011) define nurse dose as the level of nurses

Summary Of Mom s Flu Shot
The article Mom s flu shot helps unborn babies: study interprets the impact of flu shots during
pregnancy towards an unborn baby s fetal growth. A group of U.S and Bangladeshi researchers, who
conducted the study, analyzed the weight of the baby once when the flu virus was circulating and once
when it was absent. Studies showed that when it was flu season, mothers who were vaccinated gave
birth to babies who weighed about 200 grams more than they usually do. Furthermore, according to
Dr. Mark Steinhoff, a professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children s Hospital Medical Center stated

daughter of a man of high status. Her father s sides were descendants of the well know Njaajan Njaay,
the creators of the Jolof Empire. Her father was killed in April 1806, the day she was captured. The
tyeddo warriors invaded her village and collected all the villagers to be sold as slaves. That day she

Johns River. She established a lovely house for her three children and herself. She also established
slave quarters fro the twelve slaves she brought with her. Spanish law viewed slaves as persons
created by god and endowed with a soul and a moral personality, the unfortunate victims of fate or war
(Schafer, 37). They had rights under the Spanish law that allowed them to get married, be freed for
meritorious acts and also to self purchase. They were allowed to work extra jobs to earn money to buy
their freedom. Once emancipated, the slaves could own property.
Anna became Catholic while living off the St. Johns. She later used the Catholic Church to protect her
rights and bind her family to powerful patrons, forming an extended kinship networks through
godparent ties (Schafer, 38). In 1812, the Patriot Rebellion would begin. The president of the United
States, James Madison, financed and instigated the Patriot Rebellion. American soldiers and sailors
crossed the East Florida s border and took the town of Fernandina. They went south and began to
attack outside St. Augustine. On the first day of the rebellion, Zephaniah was captured and held
hostage until he signed a pledge to support the rebels. Laurel Groves was taken over by the soldiers
and used as headquarters. Kingsley s house and retail store was the only building left. Anna boarded a

Pathological Liar Essay example
We have all lied at some time or another in our life. As a child, we may have lied so we would not get
in trouble. As adults, we may lie to avoid disagreements with someone, so we can maintain a healthy
relationship with that person. We teach children that it is wrong to lie; however lying comes natural
for us, and we all lie whenever it is convenient. These kinds of lies are white lies . They are harmless
lies if mentioned with the right purpose. People lie to loved ones more than anyone else. It is easier to
lie to a loved one more than anyone else, because telling the truth might be more painful than a lie.
Some people are better liars than others. When a person becomes habituated with lying, it becomes a
problem. When Lies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A pathological liar does not realize that he is telling lies. A pathological liar unintentionally lies and
believes that he is telling the truth. Based on the C.C. Dike, M. Baranoski, and E.E.H. Griffith s study,
Pathological lying revised, pathological lying can be considered diagnosis when the lying is persistent,
pervasive, disproportionate, and not motivated primarily by reward or other external factors. is
compulsive and impulsive by nature (the liar is unable to control the lying). Also, from a psychiatric
point of view, behavior is abnormal based on the person s ability to power over it, and not the behavior
s degree or purpose. A strong psychiatric morbidity indicator, but not necessary sufficient to establish
a disorder, is when the behavior causes more harm than good and when it is supports an irrational
reason. Therefore, pathological lying implies an apparent lack of control and for pathological lying to
exist the individual must lie despite himself, just as someone with and anxiety disorder cannot help
feeling anxious. (Grubin, Acad). A Pathological liar does not have to have a reason to lie. They will
not feel guilty or care about what happens to people due to the lies that they have told. Pathological
liars lie to control and get their own way. It is difficult to determine if the stories of a pathological liar
are true or not because

The Causes Of Urbanization In Ethiopia
may even be reduced. As the population of an economy becomes wealthier, many prefer to live in the
cleaner and quieter environments of the countryside. Thus, employees need to commute into cities for
work, for which the necessary requirements, such as public transport or individual car ownership, are
only given in more developed countries. Cities in developing countries, on the other hand, still
continue to grow. Only the pace is two to five times faster than it was in the European countries during
the period of industrialization (Kojima, 1996). Many developing countries in the world are currently
experiencing an unprecedented rate of urbanization. It is also clear that, unlike the experience of
currently developed countries, the process of urbanization presently taking place in developing
countries is not so much due to rapid industrialization. Rather, it is the consequence of growing
population pressure on land in the rural areas (Kassahun, 2000). Urbanization has largely taken place
as a result of the push of rural inhabitants to urban areas (International Labour Organization 1998).
Like many developing countries, Ethiopia remains among one of the least urbanized countries in the
world. In Ethiopia, Informal settlement is socially, politically and economically growing problems,
usually referred to residential areas where a group of housing units have been constructed on land to
which the occupants have no legal claim or which they occupy illegally. Using the Ethiopian

  • 2. Foreign Language And Its Effects On American Society The foreign language deficit in America serves to be inimical to the future of American society. America s foreign language curriculum displays a more than lackluster approach in relation to those upheld in other countries. Unlike our European counterparts, most American school systems only require that students acquire two foreign language credits to graduate. Most of the time, these courses are either taught by some athletic coach who could really care less if you know how to conjugate the verb ir correctly, or by an overly passionate foreigner who spends the class time intensively explaining said conjugations to a class full of seniors who just want to graduate. In some states, this requirement is even nonexistent. As someone who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of the tacticians throughout Europe and Asia have procured a mastery of several different languages, English to be included. In accordance with American history, only half of our presidents (21 to be precise) had a command on a foreign language, sometimes demonstrating a fluency in both reading and writing in multiple foreign languages. The majority of these men held office between the 18th and 19th centuries, when language retained greater value in society. The presidents of the 20th and 21st century do not have the same qualities. As stated in David Skorton and Glenn Altschuler s article entitled America s Foreign Language Deficit , learning a foreign language is necessary... To prosper economically and to improve relations with other countries, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan declared, Americans need to read, speak and understand other languages. ...18% of Americans report speaking a language other than English, while 53% of Europeans (and increasing numbers in other parts of the world) can converse in a second language. Multiple studies exist that display the lack of effort exhibited in America in terms of language learning. According to the Forbes article, the amount of private elementary schools that offer foreign language courses dropped from 31 to 25 percent, while instruction in public elementary schools dropped from 24 percent to 15 percent. Even the percentage of middle schools with foreign language programs decreased from 75 to 58 percent. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Clapp s Assessment Of American Consumer Culture I think Clapp s assessment of American consumer culture are accurate and insightful. An examination of history and our modern cultural trends reveals the validity of Clapp s assessment. For example, in the nineteenth century pictographic and flashy advertising taught the consumerism lifestyle to Americans and transformed America into a society of consumerism. Consumers, in short, were made, not born (Clapp, 1996, p. 366). From the 1800s to the present day advertisers continue to actively and aggressively sell a lifestyle with their product. [Modern consumerism is] a fun house world of ever proliferating wants and exquisitely unsatisfied desire, consumption entails most profoundly the cultivation of pleasure, the pursuit of novelty, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kilbourne demonstrates three major main criticisms of advertising. First, advertising objectifies people and objects for the purpose of sales. This critique promotes products as more important than people and exploits human deeds and desires. Kilbourne offers ample evidence to support her first criticism of advertising. For example, Kilbourne examines advertisement such as the Thule car rack which humorously places more value on sports equipment been a child s life is evidence of the trend that advertising is objectif[ing] people...trivializ[ing and exploiting] our most heartfelt moments and relationships. Every emotion [,person, animal, and natural phenomenon] is used to sell us something (Kilbourne, 2006, 369). Second according to Kilbourne advertising promotes and perpetuates the unnatural passion for products rather than personal relationship. Advertising corrupts relationships and then offers us products, both as solace and as substitutes for the intimate human connection we all long for and need (Kilbourne, 2006, 370). Within this concept, advertising also commits cultural rape by manipulating sacred symbols for their utilization as emotional leverage in advertising. Third, advertisements damage the personality and structure of culture. For example the Giwch in tribe s traditional culture was almost erased by the introduction of advertising through television. As multinational chains replace local character, we end up in a world in which everyone is Gapped and Starbucked...[Thus] rampant commercialism undermines our physical and psychological health, our environments and our civic life, and creates a toxic society (Kilbourne, 2006, 371), which robs individuals of cultural and personal diversity. Within the stories, the philosophy of Confucianism is being stated through out the story by the relationships between the characters. The five basic human relationships can be seen in these examples below. 1. The emperor and minister relationship can be seen on page 284 of the text with the conversation Chunyu Fen has with the king. Now that he had to put up with groundless complaints and defamation, he was very unhappy , this quote shows his obligation and respect that he has for the current king. Now in the twenty first century, a new group which knows no color and/or gender are verbally attacked for such ideas. This community is the homosexual community. Although there is more of a tolerance of homosexual citizens, in general they are still discriminated because often times one is not willing to accept a different lifestyle but rather practice ignorance to the situation. Osterreicher argues in his essay Nostra Aetate that all people, despite many different backgrounds are all the same, All men form but one community. 1 This is because all stem from one stock which God created to the people the entire earth (cf. Acts 17:26) (Osterreicher 2). This is not mainly a religious issue but a personal issue that affects us all and for that a call to tolerance means understanding one individual and his/her life. Another way that such a just world is possible is if one refuses to be ignorant and believes in stereotypes. As human beings, we are called to love one another and respect another as well as opinions and lifestyle and yet it is often difficult to do such a thing. There are many reasons why it is difficult to accept a person because of who they are. The most common reason is as said before, one is taught the various prejudices about a group. This happens for many reasons. Often times the ignorance is bliss mantra wins out in philosophy and becomes the normal thought. One is ignorant because one is afraid to challenge the status quo due to retribution. The community is however not the only ones at fault. Usually it also the stereotypes told by outside sources that cause such fear and lack of knowledge. Such is the case for homosexuals in America and other parts of the world. Ruth LaCoste was born in 1930. Unlike my grandfather who was always telling tales, she never spoke of her childhood. I knew she was my ideal of what a woman should be. Until this interview, I did not know how true that was. She can best be summed up by a quote from GB Shaw, Mrs. Warren s Profession 1893, People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can t find them, make them. In short, Ruth LaCoste Rebardi represents perseverance, independence, and family. She symbolizes my ideal woman. Sex, Drugs, Disasters, and the Extinction of Dinosaurs is written by Stephen Jay Gould, professor of geology and zoology at Harvard. This essay is one of more than a hundred articles on evolution, zoology, and paleontology published by Gould in national magazines and journals. It tells about scientific proposals for the extinction of dinosaurs a confusing but an exciting problem that humanity tries to solve. Large amounts of iridium a chemical element that is not a part of the Earth s crust composition were originally found in rocks of Europe and United States, and have been found everywhere ever since. Iridium, common in meteorites, is a testable evidence of the disaster hypothesis. Gould continues that the Cretaceous debacle, which is one of five episodes of mass dying, occurred at the same time as the large comet might have smashed into the Earth. The author believes this is not merely a coincidence, rather, it is a proof of the cause effect relationship. The demise of a wide range of habitats along with the extinction of dinosaurs gives an inestimable advantage to the disaster theory over other claims, the author adds. The comet struck the Earth, and habitats, from terrestrial to marine, died with geological suddenness. Finally, this hypothesis has had an impact on the study of an atomic war and its consequences. A nuclear war, Gould says, may cause a huge drop in temperatures and result in the extinction of humanity. Testable evidence, study, development, contribution all this makes good science. The drug theory is a useless speculation and an example of bad science. The author of the theory suggested that the overdose had been a factor of the dinosaurs extinction. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After the unknown air dried, it was clear, soft, flaky, and it looked like ice. In terms of purity of the solid, recrystallization worked because it dissolved both the impurities and the compound within ethanol. This inspiration eventually led them to victory during the Texas Revolution following the Battle of San Jacinto. Under the oppressive rule of Santa Anna, the Texians began to rebel (Callcott, 2010). The Battle of Gonzales The apprehension between the Texians and Mexicans began to shift towards a war when a Mexican force led by Francisco De Castañeda was instructed to take a cannon from the rebels in the city of Gonzales. Castañeda was instructed to try to retrieve the cannon without force in order to prevent it from being used against the Mexican authorities and because the slightest act of aggression would likely push the Texians over the edge. The Texians, led by John Henry Moore, refused to cooperate. They even attempted to negotiate with Castañeda and his force to convince them to side with the Texas cause, as they shared the same principles in regards to Santa Anna s dictatorship. After Castañeda refused, because as a soldier, he was obligated to follow orders, a minor battle ensued. How Advertising Affects The World Wide Web Essay I will now introduce an extension that individuals can install on their browsers to hide all of the banners and advertisements when they are navigating the World Wide Web. When an individual is navigating the web they will see advertisements that might catch their attention and the user might click on it, taking them to another site that might have malware or virus on them. This site may also install something on their computer without them noticing. This will also block those pop ups that show when you are navigating on a certain website and you won t have to worry about something showing up that you don t want to see. Another positive thing that Ad Blockers do is that they will block all of the advertisements from videos. Slavery did set us back some years, but I have to say it has made us stronger. Most of us had to face great obstacles to get in a good place, but no matter what we keep making it through the adversity. After slavery, we as a culture had to make it through the jim crow laws. This sparked the civil right movement that gave blacks a voice to speak out against the injustice that had been quietly dealt with for years. In most of these different processes blacks had to face a criminal justice system that never seemed to be on their side. Blacks had to literally practice before the went up to testify in court in the justice system because of the very rigid injustice presented in courts. Blacks did earn their right to vote in the justice system, and they did earn their freedom in the justice system, but the justice system was geared for whites and not blacks, but through actual quoting the actual law, blacks was able to fight for their freedom. The actual law did protect its people. but it is what people inject into laws the are discriminating. Later, came the muslim movement that made blacks realise that they control their own destiny. • 19. The Characteristics Of Characterism In The Doll s House The Doll s House by Katherine Mansfield is an example of a modern short story because it fits all of the four criteria we discussed in class. The story emphasizes subtle characterization, implies facts and psychological truths, emphasizes revelation, and has examples of dramatic irony. The first criteria of a modern short story is that the story emphasizes subtle characterization rather than fast paced plot. The Doll s House does emphasize this subtle characterization in many ways. One example of this is how Katherine Mansfield lets us know how Isabel has a sense of entitlement for being the oldest in a rich family. She does not state this directly, however, she subtly tells us this by through the dialog of Isabel, like when she said, I m to tell, said Isabel, because I m the eldest. ... Isabel was bossy, but she was always right... (page 1, paragraph 8). A fast paced plot is not present in the story because it is a slice of life story, or a story that portrays the everyday lives of the characters. There is nothing particularly special happening in the story, so it emphasizes on these subtle characterizations instead. The second criteria of a modern short story is that the author implies rather than states facts and psychological truths. One example of this is when the author tells us how close they are because they have nobody else who will talk to them but each other. The author does not go right out and say this, however, she implies this through her characterization by saying, The Kelveys never failed to understand each other, (page 2, paragraph 4) after talking about how the other children left them out because of their parents, and talking about how they are always together. • 20. Why Do Gamete Cells Come Into Play Do you ever wonder how babies are made? Well, that s where gamete cells come into play. Gamete cells are haploid cells, or reproductive cells. These cells possess one pair of chromosomes from the parent. During meiosis, haploid cells are divided and the chromosomes fuse together producing genetically new instructions. Gamete cells play a crucial role in the development of a baby. Meiosis is the process in which the gamete cells turn from haploid to diploid. Meiosis involves eight stages: Prophase 1, Metaphase 1, Anaphase 1, Telophase 1, Prophase 2, Metaphase 2, Anaphase 2, and Telophase 2. Prophase 1 is when chromosomes cross over. • 21. Hybrid Contracts for Small Business Hybrid Contracts for Small Business Introduction There are many different forms of contracts in which the CEO of a small local business could use to try to acquire business from the local Navy base. Most traditional contracts are composed of either fixed price contracts or cost reimbursement type contractual arrangements. However, a new type of contract has emerged that offers small businesses alternatives to the traditional bidding structures. The new alternatives to traditional contracts offer small business a great deal more flexibility in their design. This acts as an incentive for small businesses to bid on various contracts that they might have been uncomfortable with in previous models. The hybrid contract provides a pathway to new opportunities for small business. This paper will briefly outline some of the types of contracts available and discus how they might apply to a small business. Types of Contracts The fixed price contract can be used as an effective, efficient, and accountable contract too. Fixed pricing is typically used when the product or service is being transferred that is relatively easy to determine a fair market value. For example, a fixed price contract might be used to purchase office equipment because the price is not generally subject to a large and subjective interpretation. It also is efficient because it cuts out some of the administrative burden that is placed on the relevant parties (U.S. Government, N.d.). In more complex fixed price ... Some people are quick to blame computers, television, and other sources as the driving forces behind childhood obesity. Food for thought: Who allows the child to sit in front of the computer or television for hours? Computers and televisions have become built in babysitters for some parents Television and the Internet may contribute to obesity rates a little; however, these are not the only factors that decide whether a child becomes obese. In fact, according to the WHO survey, parents are just as much at fault for making their children obese as outside influences are. Mothers tipped the scale with 91 percent of them being primary caregivers in the telephone survey, and were the ones responsible for the foods offered to, cooked for (and chosen by) the children. A parent allowing access to so many choices of unhealthy snacks convenient foods, and sitting in front of the television or Internet is only part of the problem. Medical care and nutritional education of the children is obviously the parents responsibility, but so many parents are careless about basic nutrition and the need for exercise. In addition, how many parents just don t have the gumption to battle with their preschoolers regarding what they eat? Some parents have the attitude that at least they are eating SOMETHING . The final chapter of Timothy Glander s book, Origins of Mass Communications Research During the American Cold War: Educational Effects and Contemporary Implications (2000) stands as a disappointing example of academic research becoming hijacked by the author s personal opinion. Focusing on the hidden nature of propaganda in American life, his concluding chapter presents a very drastic view of the individuals who crafted the academic subject now known as mass communications. I see the need for investigating the status quo, for digging into the motivations behind the images and data churned out in the mass media, and for questioning the trivia facts that become common knowledge. Circling any solid thesis, he claims that generations of Americans have been brainwashed by mass communications, ruining any genuine community life (2000, p. 214), a vague picture of the pre Cold War era that never becomes defined. The Cold War era may have featured significant changes in the way American communities functioned, but summoning up a sitcom image instead of genuine examples to support one of his key arguments simply weakens his case. His one clearly stated goal is to revive the association of the phrase mass communications with the word propaganda a word that appears thirty times in these fourteen pages. • 25. Bacon s Rebellion and Challenge Bacon s Rebellion and Challenge: Bacon s rebellion is a civil war that erupted between the English and the Indians in the Chesapeake whose main cause was land and labor. Since the English men were facing hunger, they decided to go out in search of greener pastures that included the search for new lands to do farming and later change it to cash. The farming itself involved looking a place that they would plant tobacco and as they were in this process, they came along some Indian communities who were already residing at their (English) border. That is when the conflict began whereby the Indian communities were beaten up and forced to flee from the area. This not only affected the Indians but also former servants who had worked with the colonialists and were part and parcel of the colonists as they ended up being landless. During this war, Bacon refused to send any troop that would assist in stopping the conflict leading to loss of lives and discrimination by the Indians. The Southerners were not needed by the government and even those who held top positions were ordered to be killed, removed forcefully from their positions, and sold into slavery. Since these individuals were under Bacon s power, they had no choice than to comply with the order. This war led to loss of properties and houses hence the Southerners became displaced and they even lost children due to the bad weather and sleeping in the cold. This paper examines the concepts of criminological theory, the history of criminological theory, differential association theory, and the effectiveness of Boys Girls Club of America. The basis of criminological theory is to provide an explanation for what causes crime and criminal behavior. The differential association theory was a leading sociological crime theory that was created by Edwin H. Sutherland. This theory argues that delinquent behavior is learned through interactions and communication with other peers. The purpose of this theory was to develop a theory that could be applied universally among all crimes and criminal behaviors, including white collar crime. Differential association argues that delinquent behavior is learned from an excess of definitions favorable to law violation, and vice versa for nondelinquent behaviors. This theory has its fair share of criticisms; the testability has been scrutinized for the inability to operationalize the concepts of differential association. Specific mentoring programs, such as the Boys Girls Club of America, were created to establish a positive environment for youth for development. Leadership and Organization Structure Essay Leadership and Organization Structure All organizations have a structure; criminal justice is much as the military in regards to having a chain of command that delegates his/her authority downward from the major command element (Stohr Collins, 2014). Max Weber defined the characteristics of a bureaucracy as the following: there is a hierarchy of authority that has several levels where each level is controlled by the one above them and includes formal procedures (Stillman, 2010; Stohr Collins, 2014). As you can see law enforcement and corrections is very similar to the military rank structure. Directives will flow from the top echelon to the middle and then to the lowest level. Age discrimination happens when someone is treated unfavourably because of their age, without justification, or is harassed and victimised because of their age. Age discrimination also happens when someone is denied something because of their age, for example there were controversies regarding giving older people drugs because of their shorter life expectancy, due to their age. Some people have argued that the money would be better spent on drugs for younger people. This is a massive discrimination against older people. An example of age discrimination in a health and social setting is that someone might not be provided a certain service because of their old age for example if they apply for a job as a nurse they might refuse their application because of their old age. This is a type of discrimination in a lot jobs but this was an example from a health and social service. Social class is another important type in which discrimination is based upon. Our social class is apparent from the place where we live. The higher the class, the better the place is kept and maintained. This inequality has also infiltrated health and social care. For the first time in mid 2013, student debt rose to 830 billion, surpassing the credit card debt (Clemmitt). Many economists and scholars compare the student debt crisis to the housing bubble, which resulted in a nationwide recession 2008. In a senate hearing regarding the current student debt crisis, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan said, The warning signs are there, just like they were before the housing crisis, and congress needs to act before it is too late (Bidwell). After graduation, many students find it difficult to repay their debt, due to the bleak job market. According to a report published on the financial website Smart money, ten percent student loans borrowers defaulted in 2010 (Clemmitt). The percent was larger for students that attended a for profit educational institution, like a career college; fifteen percent of these students defaulted (Clemmitt). Although the default rates do not contribute to the increasing student debt, one can compare it to the mortgage crisis when people stopped paying their mortgages and the American economy crashed. This exemplifies the critical problem that the student debt bubble if burst; it can have devastating impacts on the vulnerable American economy. Three causes for the increase in student debt are due to recent trends in college attendance, the increase of for profit colleges and the rise of tuition due to spending ... When we found out they didn t exist, we were probably devastated but it didn t ruin our lives. It s easy to believe untrue things and often times people say, ignorance is bliss, but believing something that isn t true can do more damage than good. Shakespeare s Othello is a prime example of how falling to the belief of illusions versus reality is ultimately harmful to people. There are many times throughout Othello where Iago tells lies and people believe him. Everyone thinks Iago is an honest man. That s made especially clear when Othello, who has a good reputation, plainly states, Iago is most honest, (2. 3. 7). The readers know, however, that Iago is far from honest. In front of Othello, Desdemona, and others, it appears Iago loves and appreciates Othello but we know this is not true because Iago clearly, and honestly, states, I follow him to ... Shortly after Roderigo is killed, Othello yells at Desdemona for cheating on him and despite her claiming she didn t, he kills her. (5. 2. 99 104). All of this death and violence is happening because of illusions Iago has set up. If Iago was honest, none of this would be a problem. The illusions Othello has been fed are so dangerous that he has become a different, violent, murderous man, and he has yet to even discover the truth. Being unaware of reality and, on the flip side, knowing of reality but not being familiar with the lies, can get someone seriously hurt. Desdemona didn t know of the illusions Othello believed, so she got killed. Once Othello realized he had been tricked, he felt the extreme weight and guilt of killing the love of his life, and couldn t take it, so he killed himself (5. 2. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A strong psychiatric morbidity indicator, but not necessary sufficient to establish a disorder, is when the behavior causes more harm than good and when it is supports an irrational reason. • 47. The Causes Of Urbanization In Ethiopia may even be reduced. As the population of an economy becomes wealthier, many prefer to live in the cleaner and quieter environments of the countryside. Thus, employees need to commute into cities for work, for which the necessary requirements, such as public transport or individual car ownership, are only given in more developed countries. Cities in developing countries, on the other hand, still continue to grow. Only the pace is two to five times faster than it was in the European countries during the period of industrialization (Kojima, 1996). Many developing countries in the world are currently experiencing an unprecedented rate of urbanization. It is also clear that, unlike the experience of currently developed countries, the process of urbanization presently taking place in developing countries is not so much due to rapid industrialization. Rather, it is the consequence of growing population pressure on land in the rural areas (Kassahun, 2000). Urbanization has largely taken place as a result of the push of rural inhabitants to urban areas (International Labour Organization 1998). Like many developing countries, Ethiopia remains among one of the least urbanized countries in the world.
