The Story of Patacara Patacara的故事
Patàcàrà was the daughter of a rich man from Sàvatthi.
She was very beautiful and was guarded very strictly by her
parents. Well, she fell in love with one of the family servants.
Of course, the parents objected to any relationship
between the 2 young people.
One day, she eloped with the young male servant
to live in a village far away, as a poor man’s wife.
Patàcàrà 是舍卫城一位富人的女儿。她很漂亮,被她保护得很严父母。
好吧,她爱上了一位家庭仆人。 当然,父母反对两个年轻人之间
有任何关系。 有一天,她带着小厮私奔到了很远的一个村子,
成了一个穷苦人家的妻子。

In due course she became pregnant and as the time
for the birth of the baby drew near, she asked
permission from her husband to return to her
parents in Savatthi, but her husband discouraged
her. The husband was afraid of being beaten up by
his previous boss, the father of his wife. So, one
day, while her husband was away, she set out for the
home of her parents. The husband followed her and
caught up with her on the way and pleaded with her
to return with him; but she refused.
It so happened that her time was drawing so near;
she went into labor and gave birth to a son in one of
the bushes. After the birth of her son, she returned
home with her husband.
随着时间的推移,她怀孕了,随着孩子出生的时间临近,
她请求丈夫允许她返回舍卫城的父母身边,但她的丈夫劝

Not long later, she was again with child and as
the time came near for her to give birth, taking
her first son with her, she again set out for the
home of her parents in Sàvatthi. Her husband
followed her and caught up with her on the way;
but her time for delivery was coming on very fast
and it was also raining hard. The husband went a
short distance away to look for a suitable place
for the wife and eldest son. As he was clearing a
little patch of land, he was bitten by a poisonous
snake and died instantaneously.
不久之后,她又怀孕了,临近产期,她带着第一
个儿子,再次出发前往舍卫城父母的家。 她的丈
夫跟着她,半路上就追上了她。 但她的分娩时间
很快就到了,而且还下着大雨。 丈夫走了一小段

Patàcàrà waited for her husband, and while
waiting for his return she gave birth to her
second son. In the morning, she searched for her
husband, but only found his dead body. Saying to
herself that her husband died on account of her,
she continued on her way to her parents.
Because it had rained incessantly the whole
night, the Aciravati River was in spate; so, it was
not possible for her to cross the river carrying
both her sons. Leaving the elder boy on this side
of the river, she crossed the river with her day-old
son and left the elder son on the other bank. She
then came back for the elder boy.
帕塔卡拉等待着她的丈夫,在等待他回来的过程中,
她生下了第二个儿子。 早上,她寻找丈夫,却只找到
了他的尸体。 她自言自语说她的丈夫是因为她而死的,

While she was still in the middle of the river, a large
eagle hovered over the younger child taking it for a
piece of meat. She shouted to frighten away the bird,
but it was all in vain; the child was carried away by the
eagle.
Meanwhile, the elder boy heard his mother shouting
from the middle of the river and thought she was
calling out to him to come to her. So, he entered the
river to go to his mother, and was carried away by the
strong current. Thus, Patàcàrà lost her two sons as
well as her husband. And she wept and lamented
loudly, “A son is carried away by an eagle, another son
is carried away by the current, my husband is also
dead, bitten by a poisonous snake!”
当她还在河中央时,一只大鹰盘旋在年幼的孩子上方,把它
当作一块肉。 她大声喊叫,想吓走那只鸟,但一切都是徒
劳。 孩子被老鹰叼走了。与此同时,大男孩听到母亲在河
中央喊叫,以为她是在呼唤他到她身边来。 于是,他走进

Then Patacara made her way alone to her village.
She met a lady in the village, and she tearfully
asked after her parents. The lady replied that due
to a violent storm in Sàvatthi the previous night,
the house of her parents had fallen down and that
both her parents, together with her three
brothers, had died, and had been cremated on
one funeral pyre. On hearing this tragic news,
Patàcàrà went stark mad. She did not even notice
that her clothes had fallen off from her and that
she was naked. She went about the streets,
shouting out, “Woe is me! I have lost my
husband, my two sons, my parents and all my
brothers!”
然后帕塔卡拉独自回到了她的村庄。 她在村里遇见一位女士,
她含泪询问她父母的情况。 这位女士回答说,由于前一天晚

Patacara wandered along the road weeping and
lamenting. She arrived at Jetavana Monastery
where the Buddha was giving a Dhamma
discourse. A monk at the monastery gate refused
to allow her in but the Buddha asked that
Patacara be brought to Him. By then, some
people in the monastery had given some clothes
to Patacara. When Patàcàrà was close enough to
hear the Buddha, He told her to be mindful and to
keep calm. He then preached to her some
Dhamma. She listened most attentively with a
focused mind. She entered the Stream of the
Noble Path.
帕塔卡拉沿着路徘徊,哭泣哀叹。 她抵达只园寺,佛
陀正在那里说法。 寺院门口的一名和尚拒绝让她进去,
但佛陀要求将帕塔卡拉带到他身边。 这时,寺里有人
送了一些衣服给帕塔卡拉。 当帕塔查拉足够近可以听

Patacara requested the Buddha to ordain her as a
nun. As a nun, she practiced very ardently and
diligently The Noble 8-Fold Path of morality,
concentration and wisdom.
One day after her alms round for food, she
returned to her kuti. Before entering her hut, she
fetched a pail of water to wash her feet. As she
poured the water over her feet and the water
flowed away onto the ground, she contemplated
and realized impermanence and the different life
spans of beings. With a mind of Right
Mindfulness and Right Concentration, she
became an Arahant.
帕塔卡拉请求佛陀出家为尼。 作为一名尼姑,她非常
热心、精进地修持戒、定、慧八圣道。 施舍食物的一
天后,她回到了库提。 进茅屋之前,她提了一桶水来
洗脚。 当她把水倒在脚上,水流到地上时,她观照并
体悟到无常和众生的不同寿命。 凭借正念和正定的心,
她证得阿罗汉。

Long, long ago there lived a merchant in Seri, India. He sold pots, pans and
other brass and tin wares. He went from village to village together with another
merchant who was also selling the same wares. This second man was cunning
and greedy, getting things selfishly, and giving as little as he could for what he
bought.
One day, when they went into a town, they divided the streets between them.
Each man went up and down the streets he had chosen, calling, "Tin ware for
sale. Brass ware for sale." People came out to their door-steps, and bought, or
traded, with them.
很久很久以前,在印度的斯里住着一个商人。 他卖锅、平底锅和其他黄铜和锡制品。 他和
另一个同样卖同样商品的商人一起从一个村庄走到另一个村庄。 这第二个人既狡猾又贪婪,

In one house there lived a poor old woman and her granddaughter. The
family had once been rich, but now the only thing they had left of all their
riches was a golden bowl. The grandmother did not know it was a golden
bowl. But she had kept it all the years.
The greedy merchant passed this house, calling, "Buy my water-jars! Buy
my pans!" The granddaughter said: "Oh, Grandmother, do buy something
for me!"
一间房子里住着一位可怜的老妇人和她的孙女。 原本家境殷实,如今家财万贯,
只剩下一个金碗。 祖母不知道那是一个金碗。 但她多年来一直保留着它。贪婪的
商人经过这所房子,喊道:“买我的水罐!买我的平底锅!” 孙女说:“哦,外
婆,给我买点东西吧!”

"My dear," said the old woman, "we are too poor to buy anything. I don’t
have anything to trade.”
"Grandmother, see what the merchant will give for the old bowl. We do not
use that, and perhaps he will take it and give us something we want for it."
The old woman called the merchant and showed him the bowl, saying,
"Will you take this, sir, and give the little girl here something for it?"
“亲爱的,”老妇人说,“我们太穷了,买不起任何东西。我没有东西可以交
易。”“外婆,看那商人给旧碗买什么。我们不用那个,说不定他会拿走,给我
们想要的东西。”老太婆叫来了商人,把碗拿给他看,说:“先生,您可以拿这
个,给这里的小姑娘一些东西吗?”

The greedy man took the bowl and scratched its side with a needle. He
realized that it was a golden bowl. He hoped he could get it for nothing, so
he said: "What is this worth? Not even a halfpenny." He threw the bowl on
the ground and went away.
By and by, the other good and honest merchant passed the house. For it
was agreed that either merchant might go through any street which the
other had left. He called: "Buy my water-jars! Buy my tin ware! Buy my
brass ware!"
贪婪的人接过碗,用针在碗的侧面划破。 他意识到这是一个金碗。 他希望自己能白拿,所
以他说:“这有什么价值?一个半便士都没有。” 他把碗扔在地上,转身走了。渐渐地,

The little girl heard him, and begged her grandmother to see what he would
give for the bowl.
"My child," said the grandmother, "the merchant who was just here threw
the bowl on the ground and went away. I have nothing else to offer in
trade."
"But, Grandmother," said the girl, "that was a cross man. This one looks
pleasant. Ask him. Perhaps he'll give some little tin dish."
"Call him, then, and show it to him," said the old woman.
小姑娘听见了,就求外婆看看他给碗买什么。“我的孩子,”外婆说,“刚才那
个商人把碗扔在地上就走了。我没有别的东西可以做生意了。”“但是,祖母,”
女孩说,“那是个脾气暴躁的人。这个看起来很讨人喜欢。问他吧。也许他会给
一些小锡盘。”“那么,给他打电话,拿给他看,”老妇人说。

As soon as the merchant took the bowl in his hands, he knew it was of gold.
He said: "All that I have here is not worth so much as this bowl. It is a
golden bowl. I am not rich enough to buy it."
"But, sir, a merchant who passed here a few moments ago, threw it on the
ground, saying it was not worth a halfpenny, and he went away," said the
grandmother. "It was worth nothing to him. If you value it, take it, giving the
little girl some dish she likes for it.“
商人一拿起手中的碗,就知道它是金的。 他说:“我这里的一切,都不如这碗,
是金碗,我没钱买。”“可是,先生,刚才经过这里的一个商人,把它扔在地上,
说它不值半分钱,他就走了。”祖母说。 “对他来说一文不值,你看重就拿去,

But the merchant would not have it so. He gave the woman all the money
he had, and all his wares. He just asked for 8 pennies to pay the boatman.
And he took the golden bowl and left.
Going quickly to the river, he paid the boatman the eight pennies to take
him across the river.
Soon the greedy merchant went back to the house where he had seen the
golden bowl, and said: "Bring that bowl to me, and I will give you
something for it.” The old woman scolded him for his dishonesty.
但商人不会这样。 他把所有的钱和所有的东西都给了那个女人。 他只是要八便士
付给船夫。 他拿着金碗离开了。他快步走到河边,付了船夫八便士带他过河。很

But it was too late. The golden bowl had been sold to the honest merchant.
The greedy merchant ran to the river side to try to reach the honest merchant.
But it was useless. The good merchant soon reached the other side of the river.
The evil and greedy merchant became very angry; his face turned red, and
blood oozed out from his nose and mouth. He clutched at his chest. His heart
broke. And so, the greedy merchant died a violent death.
Reflection
* Honesty is the best policy.
* There is a price to pay for deceit and cheating. It brings pain.
但为时已晚。 金碗已经卖给了诚实的商人。 贪婪的商人跑到河边,试图接近诚实的商

Enlightenment.

Once upon a time a monk who was working in a far away small monastery
in a village wrote a letter to the chief monk of the main monastery in the city.
In the letter he wrote, “Dear Bhante, please send one more monk to this
village monastery. We need him here to help serve the spiritual needs of the
village people.”
The chief monk called all his disciples and read that letter in front of them.
Then he said, “I would like to send five of you to the village monastery.”
从前有个和尚在一个很远的小寺院工作在一个村庄写了一封信给城里主要
寺院的首席僧侣。他在信中写道:“亲爱的 Bhante,请再派一位僧人到这
个村庄的寺院。 我们需要他来帮助满足村民的精神需求。”和尚把所有的
弟子都叫来,当着他们的面宣读那封信。然后他说:“我想派你们五个人
去村里的寺院。”

One of the disciple monks asked, “But why five monks when he has asked
only for one?”
The chief monk replied, “You will know later. If I send five monks, it is not
certain that even one of you will reach the village. It is a long way and
distractions are very many.”
The disciples laughed as they thought it was stupid to send five monks
when what was asked was for only one monk.
However, the chief monk insisted and selected five monks.
一位弟子比丘问道:“他只求一个比丘,为什么要五位比丘呢?””和尚道:“你以后
就知道了。 如果我派出五个和尚,你们一个也不一定能到村里。 这条路很长,分
心的事情很多。”弟子们都笑了,他们认为只请一位僧人,派五位僧人来是愚蠢的。
然而,首席僧侣坚持并选择了五名僧侣。

The next morning, the five monks started on their long journey.
After a couple of hours of walking, when they were passing by a village, a messenger
came running to them and said, “Our priest has died, and we need a priest. A good
salary and accommodation will be provided by us.”
The village looked quite rich and prosperous, so one of them said, “I would like to stay
here because this is true Buddha's work. (Actually, the thought of a luxurious life in the
rich village filled his mind.) I am going to stay here; you four will be enough as only
one is needed in the monastery.” So, one monk dropped out of the group to stay at the
rich village.
第二天一早,五位和尚就踏上了漫长的旅程。走了几个小时后,当他们经过一个村
庄时,一个使者跑来对他们说:“我们的牧师死了,我们需要一个牧师。 我们将提
供丰厚的薪水和住宿。”村里看起来很富足,其中一个说:“我愿意留在这里,因
为这是真正的佛陀的作品。 (其实他满脑子都是富人村的奢侈生活。) 我要留在这
里; 你们四个就够了,寺院只需要一个。” 于是,有一个僧人退群,留在了富人村。

The next day as the four monks were passing by the outskirt of the kingdom, the king
who was passing by them on horse saw the four monks. He stopped near the monks.
One of the monks was young and he looked healthy and radiant. The king said to him,
“Wait Monk. I am looking for a young man for my daughter to get married. I have been
looking for a groom and you seem to be exactly the right man.”
The king continued, “Are you ready to marry my daughter? I have only one daughter and
after the marriage my whole kingdom will be yours.”
次日,四位僧人路过国境,骑马路过的国王看到了四位僧人。 他在僧侣们附近停了
下来。其中一位和尚年纪轻轻,看上去身体健康,容光焕发。国王对他说:“等等和
尚。 我正在为我的女儿寻找一个年轻人结婚。 我一直在找新郎,看来你就是合适的
人选。”国王继续说:“你准备好娶我的女儿了吗? 我只有一个女儿,婚后我的整
个王国都是你的。”

The young monk was excited. He thought this was a good opportunity to settle down
and be happy. All thoughts of the spiritual mission to serve in the poor village vanished.
He agreed to the king’s request. After saying goodbye to his fellow brother monks, he
left with the king.
Now the three monks who were left thought that the chief monk was right. Distractions
are many. They told one another they had to be careful but deep down in the hearts,
desires and jealousies were stirring.
小和尚兴奋起来。 他认为这是一个安定下来快乐的好机会。 去贫困村服务的精神使
命的所有想法都消失了。 他同意了国王的请求。 告别了他的同胞兄弟僧侣后,他和

On the third night the three monks lost their way. After walking for some time,
they saw a lighted lamp at a distance, and they walked towards that direction.
They soon came upon a house. When they knocked on the door, a young girl
came out. She greeted and welcomed them and said, “You are sent by god
because I was alone and waiting for my mother and father to return but they
are not back. I am afraid to be alone.
Please stay with me until my parents return.”
第三天晚上,三个和尚迷了路。 走了没多久,他们看到远处有一盏点着的
灯,便朝那个方向走去。他们很快就找到了一所房子。 他们敲了敲门,一
个年轻的女孩走了出来。 她打招呼欢迎他们说:“你们是上帝派来的,因
为我一个人在等我的父母回来,但他们没有回来。 我害怕一个人。在我父

On the fourth morning the three monks had to leave but one of them had fallen in love
with that young girl. He said, “The girl’s parents haven't returned yet. I can't leave until
her parents are back.”
The other two tried hard to convince him but he refused to listen. The two monks who
were left carried on with their journey. They passed the night in a forest.
On the fifth day, when they were passing by a small town, they got surrounded by a
crowd of people who had no religion. The people challenged the two monks to answer
questions about Buddha’s teachings. They told the monks that if any monk could show
his knowledge, he would be an honored leader and the people would follow him.
第四天早上,三个和尚不得不离开,但其中一个已经爱上了那个年轻女孩。 他说:“女孩的父
母还没有回来。 在她父母回来之前我不能离开。” 另外两个人极力劝说他,但他就是不听。
剩下的两个和尚继续他们的旅程。 他们在森林里过夜。第五天,当他们经过一个小镇时,被一

One of the two monks , with thoughts of becoming famous and powerful, decided to
stay in the town and engage the people in intellectual question and answer.
The other monk reminded him that time was running out and they had to go on their
mission to the small poor village.
But Ego overwhelmed the intellectual monk, and he was adamant in wanting to stay at
the town.
So, in the end, only one dedicated simple monk reached the destination – to fulfill his
religious duties.
两位僧人中的一位,怀着出名和权势的念头,决定留在镇上,和人们进行知识问答。
另一个和尚提醒他,时间不多了,他们必须继续他们的任务到那个贫穷的小村庄。
但是自我压倒了这位知识渊博的僧侣,他坚持要留在镇上。 所以最后,只有一位虔
诚的朴僧到达了目的地——履行他的宗教职责。

“If we reflect on our lives, we will find that many people set goals for themselves.
Then they try to move towards their goals
but only a few of them are able to achieve their goals.
This is because most of the people get deviated from their way
due to the distractions that come in their way.
Therefore, if you want to be successful in your life
and want to achieve your goals, then never get distracted
by the obstacles and temptations that come your way.
Only then you will be able to achieve your goals.”
“如果我们反思自己的生活,就会发现很多人都为自己设定了目标。然后他们努力
朝着自己的目标前进但他们中只有少数人能够实现他们的目标。这是因为大多数人
由于他们的方式分心而偏离了他们的方式。因此,如果你想在生活中取得成功并实
现你的目标,那么永远不要分心遇到你遇到的障碍和诱惑。只有这样,
你才能实现你的目标。”

was in residence at a neighboring
monastery, on not a single day
did Cunda do him honor
by offering him so much as
a handful of flowers or a spoonful of rice
nor did he do a single work of merit besides.
One day he was attacked by madness,
and while he yet
remained alive, the fire of the realm
of suffering rose up before him.
虽然佛陀住在邻近的寺院,但纯陀没有
一天供养他一捧花、一勺米来供养他,
除此之外,他也没有做任何一件事的功
德。 有一天,他受到疯狂袭击,在他

苦界之火就在他面前升起。
Cunda, the miserly pork-
butcher did not do any
meritorious work.

When the torment of the realm of suffering
rose up before the pork-butcher Cunda,
his mode of behavior was changed
in accordance
with his past deeds. Even as he remained
within his house, he began to grunt like a pig
and to crawl on his hands and knees,
first to the front of the house and then to the
rear. The men of his household overpowered
him and gagged him. But in spite of all they
did (since it is impossible for anyone to
prevent a man’s past deeds from bearing fruit),
he kept crawling back and forth, grunting like
a pig continually.
当苦道的折磨升到屠宰者纯陀面前时,他的行为方
式就根据他过去的行为而改变。 当他留在屋子里
时,他就开始像猪一样咕噜咕噜,并用手和膝盖爬

Not a single person was able to sleep in the seven
houses nearby. The members of his own household,
terrified by the fear of death, unable otherwise to
prevent him from going out, barricaded the doors of
the house so that he might not be able to go out.
Having thus suffered for a period of seven days, he
died and was reborn in the realm of suffering.
Some monks said to the Buddha, “Venerable, for
seven days the door of Cunda the pork-butcher’s
house has been closed, and for seven days the
killing of pigs has gone on; doubtless he intends to
entertain some guests. So cruel and savage a being
has never been seen before.”
附近的七栋房子里没有一个人能够睡觉。 他自己的
家人因为害怕死亡,无法阻止他出去,就把家门堵
住,不让他出去。 如此受苦七日之后,他死后又投
生到苦界。 有比丘对佛言:尊者,纯陀屠猪户门已
闭七日,杀猪已七日了, 毫无疑问,他打算招待一
些客人。 如此残忍和野蛮的生物以前从未见过。”

Said the Buddha, “Monks, he has not been
killing pigs these seven days. Retribution in
keeping with his past deeds has overtaken
him. Even while he yet remained alive,
torment of the realm of suffering rose up
before him. By reason of this torment, he
crawled hither and thither in his house for
seven days, grunting and squealing like a pig.
Today he died and was reborn in hell.”
When the Buddha had thus spoken, the
monks said, “Reverend Sir, having suffered
thus here in this world, he went again to a
place of suffering and was there reborn.
佛言:“诸比丘,他这七日没有杀猪了。 与他过
去的行为相符的报应已经降临到他身上。 当他还
活着的时候,苦界的折磨就出现在他的面前。 受
此折磨,他在家里爬来爬去七天,像猪一样咕噜
咕噜地叫。 今日他死了,又投生地狱。” 佛陀
说完这句话,比库们就说:“世尊,在世间受了
这样的苦,又到苦处,往生那里。

The Buddha exhorted his disciples to refrain from doing
evil deeds. One who does evil deeds would have to
suffer for them, in this life and in future lives.
佛陀劝诫弟子们不要造恶业。 造恶业的人,
今生、来世都要受苦。

Once upon a time, a queen invited a monk to her palace.
The queen said to monk, “If I ask you for something,
would you give it to me?”
The monk asked gently, “Oh Queen, what do you want?”
The queen said, “I want your begging bowl.”
从前,一位皇后邀请一位和尚到她的宫殿。王后对和尚说:“如果我向
你要什么东西,你会给我吗?”和尚轻声问道:“王后,您有什么事?”
皇后道:“我要你的乞钵。

Without hesitating or asking for anything else, the monk gave the
queen his begging bowl – this was the only thing he had.
The queen took the alms bowl from the monk. In return she gave
him a golden bowl studded with diamonds.
和尚没有犹豫,也没有要求任何其他东西,把自己的乞钵给了王后——
这是他唯一的东西。皇后从和尚手中接过钵。 作为回报,她给了他一个
镶满钻石的金碗。

Taking that golden bowl, the monk started
walking back towards his hut.
On the way a thief saw him and started following him
with the intention of stealing that golden bowl.
The monk got to know that the thief was following him.
和尚拿着那个金碗,开始往他的小屋走去。路上有个小偷看
见他,就开始跟着他,想要偷那个金碗。
和尚得知小偷跟踪他。

The monk thought to himself, “This golden bowl is going to disturb the
inner peace of my mind. And also, the thief will have a lot of trouble
and hard work to steal it. I should just give the bowl to the thief.”
Upon reaching his hut, the monk threw that golden bowl
outside the hut and went inside.
和尚心想:“这个金碗要扰乱我内心的平静。 而且小偷要偷它会很麻烦,
也很辛苦。 我应该把碗给小偷。”和尚一到他的茅屋,就把那个金碗扔
到茅屋外面,然后进去了。

The thief who had been following the monk all along, saw that this
monk had thrown the golden bowl outside his hut.
The thief thought to himself, “ This means that the monk must be
having things more valuable in his hut.
That's why he does not care about this golden bowl.”
一直跟着和尚的小偷,看到这个和尚把金碗丢在了他的茅屋外。
小偷心想:“这说明和尚的茅屋里一定有更值钱的东西。
所以他才不在乎这个金碗。”

The thief decided to go inside the monk’s hut and take a look. He first peeked
through the window. He saw the monk was engrossed in meditation.
The thief went inside silently and looked around. The hut had nothing of value.
The thief was really surprised. He started thinking, “This monk has nothing …
then why does he not care about the golden bowl?”
小偷决定到和尚的小屋里去看看。 他先透过窗户往里看。 他看到和尚正全神贯
注地打坐。小偷悄悄地进去,四处张望。 小屋没有任何价值。小偷着实吃了一
惊。 他开始想:“这个和尚什么都没有……那他为什么不在乎金碗呢?”

He sat beside the meditating monk and waited for the monk
to come out of his meditation.
After some time, the monk opened his eyes. Upon seeing the thief sitting
near him, the monk smiled with great loving-kindness.
He said to the thief kindly, “So you have come to visit me? Welcome.”
他坐在打坐的和尚身边,等待和尚从打坐中出来。过了好一会儿,和尚
才睁开眼睛。 和尚见小偷坐在身边,满脸慈爱地笑了。他和蔼地对小偷
说:“所以你是来看我的? 欢迎。”

The thief said with folded hands, “ Sir, I was following you from the
palace till your hut here. Please tell me why you threw that golden
bowl outside your hut. What do you have that is
more valuable than that golden bowl?”
The monk smiled and said, “My dear friend, I have the treasure of
meditation …in front of this meditation treasure,
all the wealth of this world has no value.”
“小偷双手合十道:“公子,我本是从宫里跟着你,一直到你这里来
的茅屋。 请告诉我你为什么把那个金碗扔到你的小屋外面。 你有什
么比那个金碗还值钱的?”和尚笑道:“仁兄,我有禅定宝……在这
禅定宝前,世间一切财富都没有价值。”

Hearing this, the thief fell at the feet of the monk and said,
“Sir please forgive me. I came here to rob you
but you are such a saintly person.
My heart now tells me I don't want materialistic wealth .
Please give me a little out of your treasure of meditation.”
窃贼闻言,伏于和尚足下,曰:“先生请原谅我。 我来这里是为
了抢劫你,但你是如此圣洁的人。我的心现在告诉我,我不要物质
财富。 请从你的禅修宝藏中给我一点。”

The monk smiled and answered, “My dear friend you too can find the
inner happiness and peace that surpass all worldly pleasures.
This I have found.
The thief said, “Sir but I don't know how to meditate.
Please tell me how to meditate.”
The monk smiled and said, “My dear friend, I’d be more than happy to
teach you the meditation that will give you the greatest treasure ever.”
和尚微笑着回答说:“我亲爱的朋友,你也可以找到超越所有世俗快乐的内
心幸福与平静。 这是我发现的。小偷说:“先生,但我不会打坐。 请告诉我
如何打坐。”和尚微笑着说:“我亲爱的朋友,我非常乐意教你禅修,这会给
你带来最宝贵的财富。”

And so, the monk taught the thief meditation over many days:
Anapanasati Meditation ( Meditation on the Mindfulness of the Breath) and
Vipassana Meditation (Insight Meditation / Dhamma Contemplation.)
The monk reminded the man to keep practicing
the meditation, ardently, mindfully and diligently.
In time he would get the ‘Treasure of Meditation.’ The man no longer stole.
He practiced diligently what he was taught, and his life changed –
he became more happy, peaceful and wise.
因此,和尚花了很多天时间教导小偷冥想:Anapanasati 冥想(对呼吸的正念冥
想)和 Vipassana 冥想(内观冥想/正法冥想。)和尚提醒他继续修行,要精进、
正念、精进。 假以时日,他会得到‘冥想宝物’。这个人,不再偷窃。 他勤奋地实践
所教的知识,他的生活发生了变化——他变得更加快乐、平和和睿智。

‘Happiness & Peace’ from
sensual pursuits will
ultimately lead to Dukkha.

All worldly conditioned
things are impermanent.
Do not cling to them.
世间一切有为法都是无常的。
不要执着于它们。
The root causes of Dukkha
are ignorance, delusion of a
‘self’, craving & attachment.

的妄想、贪爱和执着。
The One Way to True
Happiness and Peace is
The Noble 8-Fold Path.

  • 5. The Story of Patacara Patacara的故事 Patàcàrà was the daughter of a rich man from Sàvatthi. She was very beautiful and was guarded very strictly by her parents. Well, she fell in love with one of the family servants. Of course, the parents objected to any relationship between the 2 young people. One day, she eloped with the young male servant to live in a village far away, as a poor man’s wife. In due course she became pregnant and as the time for the birth of the baby drew near, she asked permission from her husband to return to her parents in Savatthi, but her husband discouraged her. The husband was afraid of being beaten up by his previous boss, the father of his wife. So, one day, while her husband was away, she set out for the home of her parents. The husband followed her and caught up with her on the way and pleaded with her to return with him; but she refused. It so happened that her time was drawing so near; she went into labor and gave birth to a son in one of the bushes.   • 7. Not long later, she was again with child and as the time came near for her to give birth, taking her first son with her, she again set out for the home of her parents in Sàvatthi. Her husband followed her and caught up with her on the way; but her time for delivery was coming on very fast and it was also raining hard. The husband went a short distance away to look for a suitable place for the wife and eldest son.   • 8. Patàcàrà waited for her husband, and while waiting for his return she gave birth to her second son. In the morning, she searched for her husband, but only found his dead body. Saying to herself that her husband died on account of her, she continued on her way to her parents. Because it had rained incessantly the whole night, the Aciravati River was in spate; so, it was not possible for her to cross the river carrying both her sons. Leaving the elder boy on this side of the river, she crossed the river with her day-old son and left the elder son on the other bank.   • 9. While she was still in the middle of the river, a large eagle hovered over the younger child taking it for a piece of meat. She shouted to frighten away the bird, but it was all in vain; the child was carried away by the eagle. Meanwhile, the elder boy heard his mother shouting from the middle of the river and thought she was calling out to him to come to her. So, he entered the river to go to his mother, and was carried away by the strong current. Thus, Patàcàrà lost her two sons as well as her husband.   • 10. Then Patacara made her way alone to her village. She met a lady in the village, and she tearfully asked after her parents. The lady replied that due to a violent storm in Sàvatthi the previous night, the house of her parents had fallen down and that both her parents, together with her three brothers, had died, and had been cremated on one funeral pyre. On hearing this tragic news, Patàcàrà went stark mad. She did not even notice that her clothes had fallen off from her and that she was naked. She went about the streets, shouting out, “Woe is me!   • 11. Patacara wandered along the road weeping and lamenting. She arrived at Jetavana Monastery where the Buddha was giving a Dhamma discourse. A monk at the monastery gate refused to allow her in but the Buddha asked that Patacara be brought to Him. By then, some people in the monastery had given some clothes to Patacara. When Patàcàrà was close enough to hear the Buddha, He told her to be mindful and to keep calm. He then preached to her some Dhamma. She listened most attentively with a focused mind. As she poured the water over her feet and the water flowed away onto the ground, she contemplated and realized impermanence and the different life spans of beings. He went from village to village together with another merchant who was also selling the same wares. This second man was cunning and greedy, getting things selfishly, and giving as little as he could for what he bought. One day, when they went into a town, they divided the streets between them. Each man went up and down the streets he had chosen, calling, "Tin ware for sale. Brass ware for sale."   • 19. The greedy man took the bowl and scratched its side with a needle. He realized that it was a golden bowl. He hoped he could get it for nothing, so he said: "What is this worth? Not even a halfpenny." He threw the bowl on the ground and went away. By and by, the other good and honest merchant passed the house. For it was agreed that either merchant might go through any street which the other had left. He called: "Buy my water-jars! Buy my tin ware! I am not rich enough to buy it." "But, sir, a merchant who passed here a few moments ago, threw it on the ground, saying it was not worth a halfpenny, and he went away," said the grandmother. "It was worth nothing to him.   • 22. But the merchant would not have it so. He gave the woman all the money he had, and all his wares. He just asked for 8 pennies to pay the boatman. And he took the golden bowl and left. Going quickly to the river, he paid the boatman the eight pennies to take him across the river. The good merchant soon reached the other side of the river. The evil and greedy merchant became very angry; his face turned red, and blood oozed out from his nose and mouth. He clutched at his chest. His heart broke. And so, the greedy merchant died a violent death. Reflection * Honesty is the best policy. * There is a price to pay for deceit and cheating. We need him here to help serve the spiritual needs of the village people.” The chief monk called all his disciples and read that letter in front of them. After a couple of hours of walking, when they were passing by a village, a messenger came running to them and said, “Our priest has died, and we need a priest. A good salary and accommodation will be provided by us.” The village looked quite rich and prosperous, so one of them said, “I would like to stay here because this is true Buddha's work. (Actually, the thought of a luxurious life in the rich village filled his mind.) I have been looking for a groom and you seem to be exactly the right man.” The king continued, “Are you ready to marry my daughter?   • 42. The young monk was excited. He thought this was a good opportunity to settle down and be happy. All thoughts of the spiritual mission to serve in the poor village vanished. He agreed to the king’s request. After saying goodbye to his fellow brother monks, he left with the king. Now the three monks who were left thought that the chief monk was right. Distractions are many. She greeted and welcomed them and said, “You are sent by god because I was alone and waiting for my mother and father to return but they are not back. I am afraid to be alone. I can't leave until her parents are back.” The other two tried hard to convince him but he refused to listen. The two monks who were left carried on with their journey. They passed the night in a forest. On the fifth day, when they were passing by a small town, they got surrounded by a crowd of people who had no religion. The people challenged the two monks to answer questions about Buddha’s teachings.   • 45. One of the two monks , with thoughts of becoming famous and powerful, decided to stay in the town and engage the people in intellectual question and answer. The other monk reminded him that time was running out and they had to go on their mission to the small poor village. But Ego overwhelmed the intellectual monk, and he was adamant in wanting to stay at the town.   • 51. When the torment of the realm of suffering rose up before the pork-butcher Cunda, his mode of behavior was changed in accordance with his past deeds. Even as he remained within his house, he began to grunt like a pig and to crawl on his hands and knees, first to the front of the house and then to the rear. The men of his household overpowered him and gagged him. The members of his own household, terrified by the fear of death, unable otherwise to prevent him from going out, barricaded the doors of the house so that he might not be able to go out. Having thus suffered for a period of seven days, he died and was reborn in the realm of suffering. Some monks said to the Buddha, “Venerable, for seven days the door of Cunda the pork-butcher’s house has been closed, and for seven days the killing of pigs has gone on; doubtless he intends to entertain some guests. Even while he yet remained alive, torment of the realm of suffering rose up before him. By reason of this torment, he crawled hither and thither in his house for seven days, grunting and squealing like a pig. The thief thought to himself, “ This means that the monk must be having things more valuable in his hut.   • 62. The thief decided to go inside the monk’s hut and take a look. He first peeked through the window. He saw the monk was engrossed in meditation. The thief went inside silently and looked around. The hut had nothing of value. The thief was really surprised.   • 63. He sat beside the meditating monk and waited for the monk to come out of his meditation. After some time, the monk opened his eyes. Upon seeing the thief sitting near him, the monk smiled with great loving-kindness. He said to the thief kindly, “So you have come to visit me? What do you have that is more valuable than that golden bowl?” The monk smiled and said, “My dear friend, I have the treasure of meditation …in front of this meditation treasure, all the wealth of this world has no value.” “小偷双手合十道:“公子,我本是从宫里跟着你,一直到你这里来 的茅屋。 请告诉我你为什么把那个金碗扔到你的小屋外面。 你有什 么比那个金碗还值钱的?”和尚笑道:“仁兄,我有禅定宝……在这 禅定宝前,世间一切财富都没有价值。” 62
  • 65. Hearing this, the thief fell at the feet of the monk and said, “Sir please forgive me. I came here to rob you but you are such a saintly person. My heart now tells me I don't want materialistic wealth . Please give me a little out of your treasure of meditation.” 窃贼闻言,伏于和尚足下,曰:“先生请原谅我。 我来这里是为 了抢劫你,但你是如此圣洁的人。我的心现在告诉我,我不要物质 财富。 请从你的禅修宝藏中给我一点。” 63
  • 66. The monk smiled and answered, “My dear friend you too can find the inner happiness and peace that surpass all worldly pleasures. This I have found. The thief said, “Sir but I don't know how to meditate. Please tell me how to meditate.” The monk smiled and said, “My dear friend, I’d be more than happy to teach you the meditation that will give you the greatest treasure ever.” 和尚微笑着回答说:“我亲爱的朋友,你也可以找到超越所有世俗快乐的内 心幸福与平静。 这是我发现的。小偷说:“先生,但我不会打坐。 请告诉我 如何打坐。”和尚微笑着说:“我亲爱的朋友,我非常乐意教你禅修,这会给 你带来最宝贵的财富。” 64

And so, the monk taught the thief meditation over many days: Anapanasati Meditation ( Meditation on the Mindfulness of the Breath) and Vipassana Meditation (Insight Meditation / Dhamma Contemplation.) The monk reminded the man to keep practicing the meditation, ardently, mindfully and diligently. In time he would get the ‘Treasure of Meditation.’ The man no longer stole. He practiced diligently what he was taught, and his life changed – he became more happy, peaceful and wise. 因此,和尚花了很多天时间教导小偷冥想:Anapanasati 冥想(对呼吸的正念冥 想)和 Vipassana 冥想(内观冥想/正法冥想。)和尚提醒他继续修行,要精进、 正念、精进。 假以时日,他会得到‘冥想宝物’。这个人,不再偷窃。 他勤奋地实践 所教的知识,他的生活发生了变化——他变得更加快乐、平和和睿智。 65
