Popular literature often reflects society s beliefs and struggles, and dystopian fiction is once again
gaining popularity. From Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro to Hulu s reimagining of The
Handmaid s Tale, written by Margaret Atwood, and all the young adult dystopias in between, one does
not have to search far to find a unique dystopian read. While every dystopia is different, these novels
have similar characteristics that define their genre.
These two novels appeal to me because they are unique depictions of dystopian societies. The
narrative style of Never Let Me Go slowly unveils the dystopian qualities of Hailsham, the primary
setting of the novel. Readers of this novel develop an attachment to the characters, only to find out
that these characters with their dreams and plans already have a destiny written out for them; they are
clones and they will be organ donors until there is nothing left to give. Similarly, in The Handmaid s
Tale, women are subjugated and used, with their futures planned for them. There is no freedom for the
clones or the handmaids, and these beings are treated as less than human. The thing that makes these
two novels different from most of the dystopian novels I read (usually young adult) is the fact that in
Never Let Me Go and The Handmaid s Tale, the protagonists aren t heavily involved in overthrowing
the status quo. In fact, in the former, the protagonist accepts her fate without any fight. This is
interesting as most dystopian novels leave you feeling good after the protagonist (usually a teen in the
books I read) manages to defeat tyranny and create a better society for future generations. For a long
time now, I have found dystopian societies fascinating, and these two books in particular appeal to me

issue by putting the weights in the back of the car like where the motor is. Then, I tested our car with
100g weights on the track, and the energy score increased. As a group, we decided to add more
weights because as I put more weights on the car, the energy score increased.

2000 survey and list of countries with the most improved education systems by the Programme for
International Student Assessment or PISA. The performance of academic students at age 15 in
reading, math and science was surveyed in 32 countries. According to the 2009 results, the top 5
performers in reading were Shanghai, China; South Korea; Finland; Hong Kong, China; and
Singapore. In reading, the top ranking were Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, and
Finland as the 6th. And in science, the leaders were Shanghai, Finland, Hong Kong, Singapore, and
Japan. The US was among the lowest ranking in science as the 23rd in ranking (The Economist

It was a cold and foggy morning, less than 3 degrees, but in the town of Sylvester this was considered
warm, Sylvester was a town unlike others because it was home to the greatest adventurers of all time:
Billy the Bold, Jumbo the Gibberish, Collin the cold butt and miss and Mr Appleby. And this is where
our story begins. Jeff was out picking apples with his dog Dingelberry.
After Jeff returned he decided he would become Sylvester s next great explorer he packed his things
and set sail in his boat. After 20 minutes Jeff found out that he was a really bad sailor and had to turn
back to land back at home Jeff thought of a solution where he would not have to sail or swim. Jeff
stayed up all night to think of something and then in the morning Jeff had designed and made the
perfect flying machine.
Outside Jeff tried his hardest to heave the plane outside and just then his best friend walked by and
with the added help of his friend they finally got onto the hill with a ramp at the bottom so the plane
could take off. Jeff rolled down the hill and took off he soared through the sky but after a while Jeff
realised that the fuel canister was extremely low so he had to turn back.
Back at home Jeff had to think of a way to switch the fuel while In the air and he kept coming to the
same conclusion someone or something would have to manually climb on to the wing and pour the
fuel into the tank while the plane is still flying in mid air over the treacherous

regular cost is about $450 million. That is a lot of money and here is the catch, that cost is only for one

Retirement is supposed to be an enjoyable experience. Most seniors hope that their lifestyles will
continue in the same fashion as it is at the time of retirement. Retirement is anticipated as a time of
more leisure, a time for slowing down from the daily rat race and enjoying life. Many retirees hope to
take advantage of the opportunity to embrace a simpler lifestyle and experience less stress.
Unfortunately, for many, this turns out to not be the case.
Although some retirees have planned adequately for retirement, many are ill prepared. The statistics,
when viewed, are alarming. Only 53 percent of workers have retirement plans and only 48 percent
actually participate in a 401(k) or retirement program offered by their employer. Some thirty eight
million, approximately 45 percent of current households with working age individuals, state that they
have no retirement savings at all. The median retirement account balance is $3,000 for most working
age households with and without retirement accounts and $12,000 for near retirement households.

median balance at retirement is $120,000. That may sound like a lot, but for the typical household,

Last class, we got to hear from Kate Parker, who is the Policy Director of Research and Advocacy at

Theater used in the context of youth ministry is a brilliant strategy for deepening the faith journey of
students. This is because art is a reflection of life. It holds a mirror to that which we see everyday and
presents it in a different light, bringing forward new messages and changing not only the audience but
the performer. Used and approached properly, the performing arts can expand the mind, strengthen the
body, and fortify the spirit. This can be done regardless of the production or character being portrayed.
In this way youth can see what it is to live in the world and not be of it (John 17:14 18).
The Theology A foundational part of the theology behind the theater department at Corban University
is the belief that we are created in the image of God (Gen 1:26 27). Because of this, we are blessed
with many of his characteristics, one of which is creativity (Gen 1). Since we live in a world fallen to
sin, we as humans are broken. The brokenness leads to insecurity in our gifts, in our worship and even
in our relationships. In participating in a production that reflects the broken nature of humanity and the
redemptive power of Christ, students can participate in that creativity and grow in practical
understanding of theology (Heb 5:13 14). This approach to a foundation for theater as a ministry is
important because it brings us back to the basics of who we are as children of God (John 1:12 13; Phil
