Internal Auditing Case Study
Appreciative Internal Audit: A Strength Based Approach to Quality System Auditing A Case Study.
Jon Morris President JDQ Systems Inc. Vancouver, BC, Canada
Introduction
Traditional internal audits fulfill an important need for companies with fresh ISO 9001:2000 Quality
Management System implementations, but for companies with mature systems, those registered for
more than five years, an innovative approach to auditing called Appreciative Internal Quality Audit
can take them beyond compliance to excellence. In effect, the Appreciative Audit approach both raises
the bar and adds value for the 65,000+ North American organizations that spend a total of more than
$4.5 billion on internal audits each year (see the SIDEBAR: About ... Show more content on

Based on a conservative estimate by JDQ, North American companies spend more than $4.5 billion on
planning, conducting and reporting internal audits each year. This estimate is based on 2005 estimates
of ISO registered companies in North America for whom internal audits are mandatory. The estimates
do not include companies that audit their business management systems on a voluntary basis. See

as reported by registrars to the ISO 9000 Database. While the numbers are accurate for the majority of
registrars, not all registrars update their data on a timely basis.

John Brown as the Villian or Hero Essay
John Brown as the Villian or Hero
Brown s attack on Harper s Ferry affected American culture more than can ever be understood.
Tension between the North and South was building in the 1850 s. Slavery among many other things
was dividing the country into two sections. Brown was executed on December 2, 1859 for his
murderous out lash on society. Was his mind so twisted and demented that he would commit cold
blooded murder? The answer is no. John Brown was a man with a goal and a purpose. When he said
that abolition could not be achieved without blood he was right. It is one of histories great ironies;
John Brown s struggle preceded the Civil War by only 17 months. Thousands of people were killed in
the Civil War, yet John Brown ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Brown wanted to do anything he had to in order to abolish slavery. Brown had a great faith in God.
Success had eluded him up to this point. He had sired 20 children and had gone through two wives,
but he still felt unfulfilled. In 1846, Brown was working as a wool merchant but nothing ever came of
it. Before 1855, Brown had gone through a series of lawsuits and bankruptcies that halted his success.
Gerrit Smith, a philanthropist friend of Brown s, was persuaded into giving a portion of the 120,000
acres of land he owned in upstate New York to Brown. This land would be open to refugee negroes.
Brown lived on this land as a farmer for some time before realizing that people were just taking
advantage of him.
In 1850, the Fugitive Slave Law was passed. This law plainly stated that citizens were required to help
slave catchers if inquired upon to do so. This law would make it immensely difficult for slaves to
successfully escape slavery. Slaves would have to be even more careful not to run into the wrong
person.
John Brown along with other northerners were outraged. Many abolitionists protested and claimed this
law was outrageous. The question of whether it was right for the government to force abolitionist to
help slave catchers was asked, Brown knew

The Forms Of Birth Control In The 19th Century
For thousands of years forms of birth control have been around. People have fought for hundreds of
years to make birth control available to all women. Birth control was banned at point in the United
Sates. According to the authors at Wikipedia.org, Contraception was not restricted by the law in the
United States throughout most of the 19th century, but in the 1870s a social purity movement grew in
strength, aimed at outlawing vice in general, and prostitution and obscenity in particular. Composed
primarily of Protestant moral reformers and middle class women, the Victorian era campaign also
attacked contraception, which was viewed as an immoral practice that promoted prostitution and
venereal disease. The earliest forms of birth control was reported around 3000 B.C. Condoms were
made from fish bladders, linen sheaths, and even animal intestines. In the 1500 s, the first spermicides,
chemicals that kill sperm, were used to kill spermatozoa. The first condoms were made from linen
cloth sheaths and soaked in chemical solution and dried before using. In 1838, condoms and
diaphragms were made from vulcanized rubber. A diaphragm is a shallow, bendable cup that you put
inside your vagina. It covers your cervix during sex to prevent pregnancy. In 1873, the Comstock Act
passed in the United States prohibiting advertisements, information, and distribution of birth control
and allowing the postal service to confiscate birth control sold through the mail. In 1916, Margaret

How Did The New Deal Help America
he new deal of the 1930s was seen as the radical action needed during the depression to help American
people and the American economy. However, some people criticised it for not being radical enough as
it didn t help all Americans. Roosevelt started off by introducing 15 acts in his first 100 days including
the alphabet agencies and the beer act. These acts and agencies were designed to help certain groups
of people but this meant that some were left out. This meant that Roosevelt was forced into producing
the second new deal which helped Americans in the late 1930s.
The first couple of acts were very important, first there was the emergency banking act which closed

Authorship Of Shakespeare
Scholars and experts on literature raise the question of whether or not a commoner like William
Shakespeare really did write all the works credited to his name. The Shakespeare authorship question
has been a controversial topic since the 19th century. Numerous scholars have used literary analysis
techniques and collected data in an attempt to discover the true author of the works credited to
Shakespeare. The fact that there is still continuous work by experts on both sides of the argument
establishes the sincerity of this question and the determination of researchers to find concrete
evidence. Credible research by scholars prove the impossibility that anyone else wrote Shakespeare s
work, negating any Anti Stratfordian argument. Research ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In The Shakespeare Authorship Question , the authors compared works written by Shakespeare to
pieces by other writers of the time period. On the statistical side, the correspondence of word lengths
between Shakespeare and these other authors was significantly different. The researchers found that
Shakespeare was one of the few authors that used more 4 letter words than any other size (2)
contrasting to the higher use of 3 letter words with both Marlowe and Bacon. For Edward de Vere, the
word length analysis showed a slightly higher correspondence; however, the character distribution
between the two writers did not match. For de Vere, the researchers analyzed 600 lines of poetry,
while with Shakespeare they analyzed 9000 lines of prose from his plays. This unequal comparison
shows that not only did the authors have different styles, but they also wrote different genres making it
unlikely that they were the same person. Other scholars come up with a different reason why there
could be some correspondence between writers. Carol Rutter presents the idea that Shakespeare
collaborated not with another playwright, but with the actors (3) whose voices may have been
influenced by that of another playwright of the time. The actors most likely heard or read the plays
and writings of other authors such as Bacon, Marlowe, and de Vere, which may have influenced their
voices. Not only that, but the other possible authors also wrote their own plays and works. It would
have been very difficult for these authors to have written their own works along with all of
Shakespeare s. Careful analysis of texts and pieces written by other writers conclude that these other
authors could not have been

Tubing Essay
Wiping the sleepies out of my eyes, I quickly glanced at my alarm clock 5 am. Good, I ve got plenty
of time, I thought to myself. As quietly as possible, which never works when I am trying to, I quickly
grabbed a bowl of cereal for breakfast. Checking my list and grabbing my gear I headed out to wait
for a taxi in the cool fading morning. I could taste the excitement, or was that the humidity?
That day began like all the other missionary kid tubing trips down the Davao River in the Philippines,
full of anxious anticipation and adventure. I was so excited you can barely sleep the night before. My
mom made sure I had everything I needed, worrying like only mothers know how. My friends and I
were off from school for Christmas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of us struggled into our wetsuit, trying to jump and jiggle in, while others tied themselves to
their tub as a safety line. I decided not to tie myself on, because the last time I had tubed in a flood, the
nylon rope almost strangled me. As we continued to get ready, we had to periodically move back
because the river was still rising. Every once and a while, huge trees whole trees would pass by, barely
making it under the rope bridge ahead of us. This only added to our excitement. This was going to be
AWESOME!
The plan was to stay as a group as much as possible. Like always, we each had a buddy. Plans
changed. As soon as we entered the water we were sweep away, literally sweep away. In normal
conditions we could steer and avoid objects easily on the river. This was completely different. In about
five minutes we all realized that the river was in control, not us. Our group got scattered like a rain
drop hitting a window. Buddies changed.
Four of us, Fraser, Isaac, Jon, and I slammed into a grove of coconut trees that is usually five feet up
on the bank. The river was supposed go on both sides of this island but this time it did not. The river,
swollen to its max capacity, went clear over and through the grove. Gathering our senses, and Jon s
tub that he got thrown off of, we tempted to half walk, half swim our way to the end of the grove and

Third Person Single Vision Narrative In The Most Dangerous...
Serious, mysterious, and suspenseful; through third person single vision narration, Richard Connell
the author of The Most Dangerous Game artfully tells the tale of Rainsford, the protagonist who was
once the hunter, but is now the prey of his antagonist, General Zaroff. In the story, the General is
hunting the protagonist and despite Rainsford s best effort to kill him before he is killed, the General is
still hot on his trail. However, it can be seen as the story unfolds, how the author to chose to write in
third person single vision. For example, the pronoun he was written, which indicates third person. But,
should it be in third person single vision? Could it not be in another POV, like first person or third
person multiple vision? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Secondly, the current POV also has a single focus on the protagonist and his opinions about the
general, which helps to develop the theme. Richard Connell wrote The Most Dangerous Game in third
person single vision because it is the best approach to create suspense at crucial moments and develop
the underlying theme. Now some may say a first person narration would better suit the story because it
would create the comedic effect of dramatic irony, despite its serious tone and its plot of hunter turned
prey. In some aspects they are right. However, The Most Dangerous Game is a story of survival and of
possible death. A third person narrator is much more appropriate and necessary because it helps to
create the much needed suspense for the crisis, when everything is at the height of its motion. The
story is a serious tale and recounts the survival adventure of its protagonist Rainsford, as he sets traps
to kill the general and tries to avoid being killed himself. So, the narrating voice must capture such
seriousness and also create the suspense at the necessary parts of the story. The original point of view,
third person single vision, has a narrating voice who captures and develops both of these elements.
The voice seems to stand just behind ..., the

it is much harder to maintain due to the additive amount of extra work you have to do. A truck is

that in Michigan you could have a blizzard one day and then the next day it is 70 degrees and sunny.

Character Analysis Of The Boy In The Striped Pajamas
In the book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, the main character, Bruno, changes
throughout the story due to his interactions and relationship with Shmuel, a Jewish boy in a German
concentration camp. Prior to meeting Shmuel, Bruno exhibited many negative character traits. For
example, just after Bruno arrives at Out With, Bruno begins to complain to Maria, their maid, on all of
the horrible traits the house possesses: Well, if Father s job means that we have to move away from
our house and the sliding banister and my three best friends for life, then I think Father should think
twice about his job, don t you? (Boyne 17). Bruno already misses his old home, which allowed him to
play and make his three best friends for life . He had enjoyed the familiarness and entertainment of his
own home which made moving much harder. At his new house, Bruno is disappointed that he does not
have as many opportunities as he had had in Berlin. Not only did Bruno miss his old home, but his
new house made him uncomfortable. When gazing out his window, Bruno spots the wall of the
concentration camp as He put his face to the glass and saw what was out there, and this time when his
eyes opened wide and his mouth made the shape of an O, and his hands stayed by his sides because
something made him feel very cold and unsafe (Boyne 19). Before meeting Shmuel, Bruno is lonely at
Out With. He has been hoping for an adventurous exploration to go on, yet finding out the unknown
about these people makes him uncomfortable. Unsure of the wall s purpose, the wall gives him an
eerie feeling. He does not recognize these people either, nor does he know the reasoning on why they
are behind the wall. This is not the kind of adventure Bruno was looking for. Bruno s life before
meeting Shmuel was very lonely and dull, yet after meeting his new friend, Bruno began to rather
enjoy his time in Poland. After befriending Shmuel, Bruno s thoughts and opinions on Out With are
altered as his loneliness has faded. To illustrate, when Bruno and Shmuel meet for the first time, each
boy takes his turn sharing something about himself. When Bruno asks how old Shmuel is, he responds
by saying I m nine, he [Shmuel] said. My birthday is

Classical Psychedelics And Dissociative Drugs
As we know, hallucinogens are a type of drug that specialize in distorting the way a user perceives
time, motion, colors, sounds, and self, or simply, causing psychological consequences onto their
victims (Volkow 2015). However, the Foundation for a Drug Free World (FDFW) prefers to link the
term hallucinations , or psychological experiences in seeing images, hearing sounds and feeling
sensations that seem very real but do not exist, to hallucinogens as a better and summarized definition
replacement (2016). True to some level, the two categories that make up hallucinogens, classical
psychedelics and dissociative drugs, each specialize into specific psychological harm, which
correspondingly, simplifies our broad description in what hallucinogens commonly cause. Once a
classical hallucinogen, like LSD, psilocybin, and DMT, is taken and ingested, psychological effects
consisting of psychotic like episodes that can occur long after a person has taken the drug, massive
mood swings, emotions to swing wildly and unpredictably, real world sensations to appear unreal, and
ultimately intense modifications in the sensorium, the sense of self, and the experience of reality, are
all experienced throughout the phase up until the presence of the hallucinogen is no longer present in
the body (Volkow 2016, Alonso 2015). A very similar process that happens when a dissociative drug is
ingested, like PCP, ketamine, dextromethorphan, but instead, events of respiratory depression, heart

Nurses s Role As Health Care Advocates And Affect The...
The notes nurses take play an important part in their role as health care advocates and affect the
quality of care the patients receive. Notes are essential because they prove that the necessary care was
ensued upon the patient and can be used as a reference for other nurses who will be caring for the
patient. Notes can be used to advocate for the decisions the nurse had previously made in the case of
false allegations or complains therefore they should be detailed, unambiguous and comprehensible.
Nurses should avoid general statements as they tend to be misguiding or misleading and might cause
complications that could have a negative effect on the patient s comfort and health. Even though it
might be difficult nurses should aim to write out full medical terms whenever feasible. If nurses are
not able to write out the medical terms then they should use terms that are familiar to other nurses and
physicians. The notes that were provided are atrocious, faulty and dangerous because they aren t
objective, the data is not supported by descriptions of specific observations or actions taken and lastly
there s an abundance of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. Subjective descriptions tend to be
counterproductive as they don t provide sufficient information about the patient s current state, an
example from the notes would be Woke vitals at 10. To make the notes more objective the nurse
should state detailed vital signs and should aim to use measurable and calculable data

Planet Of Viruses
In the book A Planet of Viruses, Carl Zimmer talks about viruses and how they have evolved in our
earth. Throughout the book, he explains how viruses developed to dominate the outcomes of our
health by constantly producing and spreading new diseases across species. New diseases are formed
by viruses through mutation and reassortment. Zimmer explains that reassortment allows flu viruses to
mix genes together, into new combinations (Zimmer, 18). At first, Zimmer explains how the word
Virus had a different meaning in the beginning and had changed to acquire the meaning it is now. He
then talks in each chapter about various viruses such as, HIV, swine flu, small pox and many other. He
discusses about their impact on our environment, and how they originated. Viruses spread by animals,
air or even mosquitos. This book also shows how the viruses are becoming more and more resilient to
antibiotics, which controls the environment, our fate and the aspects of health.
Carl Zimmer is a journalist, writer and popular speaker at universities, medical schools and other
significant places. He has written over a hundred articles for the New York Times and he also has a
column called The Matter that is published every week. He writes books, articles, essays and blog

There are several different types of psychological and neurological phenomena that individuals live

prosopagnosia or face blindness. Prosopagnosia is the inability to recognize and distinguish faces. For
example, individuals with this condition could have difficulty recognizing their child s, spouse s,

Lower Court Cases
s cases that have been tried by lower courts. Sometimes the Supreme Court returns cases back to
lower courts because they don t think that the case is important enough for their attention. Federal
courts involve cases that deal with money or in more extensive things like bank robbing, kidnapping,
fraud, treason or etc. Sate courts are arranged depending on the legislature of each state.
Currently there are nine members on the Supreme Court, eight are associate justices and one is the
chief justice. A justice on the Supreme Court is appointed for life. They do not serve terms like

This was not granted by the United States Constitution, but came about later in the early 1800s from a
case that was taken to the Supreme Court. In the case of Marbury vs Madison, Marbury was asking
the Supreme Court to force the Secretary of State, James Madison to recognize his appointment to an
office. The Judiciary Act said the Supreme Court had the authority to make a decision. However, the
Supreme Court decided that the Judiciary Act was unconstitutional and that they did not have the
decision making power in this case. Since then, Judicial Review has been used by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court checks the other branches of government by determining if a law is in agreement

Telemedicine Ethical Dilemmas
The use of various forms of technology by people from all areas of the world expands seemingly
everyday. The prominence of technology has allowed for people to virtually connect from different
sides of the globe. As technology has grown, however, there has been increasing ethical concerns as to
whether the intent of various connection platforms (such as, Skype , FaceTime , etc.) have
overreached personal boundaries. Platforms as simple as chat rooms that allow people to connect via
text, and as advanced as global news/email servers have been intercepted by hackers with intent to
invade privacy and steal confidential information. For example, in 2016 the United States formally
indicted two Russian hackers, with dozens of cyber security offenses, that were behind the theft of
over 500 million Yahoo accounts in 2014 (Volz). These charges, which came during possible
speculation that these hackers influenced the election of United States ... Show more content on

According to a government study, bringing telemedicine to places in sub Saharan Africa, made up of
33 of the 48 globally poorest countries, would be vital to the two main branches of healthcare:
preventive and emergency, where countries that lack proper infrastructure leave people and
communities disease ridden (Wamala). In some countries, such as Ethiopia and South Africa, there is
significant progress in Telemedicine, while in countries such as Burkina Faso and Nigeria the progress
is slow because of lack of political support. The study noted that while it is not always practical to
have doctors deployed to certain regions where medical need is required, telemedicine and
empowering people through video and cellular communication is critical in areas to prevent disease
from occurring in the first place, especially in places like the rural poor, where delivering medicine is

In that classic old movie, Papillon, starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, there is a particular
phrase that stays in my mind. It occurs when McQueen, playing Papillon, is in solitary confinement
and is obviously on the point of dying. He goes into a sort of coma and starts seeing friends of his who
are now dead. Then an authoritarian sounding voice says, I accuse you of a wasted life. It is on this
subject that I write this particular essay.
Many of us of heard of Abraham Maslow s Pyramid of Human Needs. We know a little about the
basic needs of food, shelter, et cetera. We know of feelings of belonging and self esteem. We also
know of self actualization, though there is often confusion between self actualization and self
realization. So I d like to explain a little about the difference here.
Self Actualization
Self actualization refers to becoming as much as we can in the practical pragmatic scheme of affairs. It
refers to developing our talents, our skills, in educating ourselves to the best of our ability, being the

Should Child Soldiers Receive Amnesty
Did you know that up to thirty percent of child soldiers are female? This is because they have a higher
risk of being sexually abused, including rape. They are also given to the commanders as wives. In
some parts of the world, such as Yemen and South Sudan, there is tremendous dispute over the subject
of child soldiers. The history of child soldiers go back to WW1 and WW2. When the number of
German soldiers started to drop during the war, Nazi leaders began to enlist children as young as
twelve years old. The Asians also did the same when they were battling against the Japanese in WW1.
In Africa, child soldiers are still used today. Child soldiers should receive amnesty because they were

The War of the Worlds podcast discusses an event that happened in New Jersey, 1938. A radio station
was broadcasting a drama series called The Mercury Theater on the Air where the episode relates a
story which is supposed to be unreal. However, it caused controversy in the audience due to many
factors, such as the time in which it was transmitted, the interruptions during the broadcast, the
recreation of the scenario, and the voice with which the podcast was transmitted. Those aspects
created confusion in the audience. As a result, the audience believed what they listened were truth

The documentary Hot girls wanted is all about showing the world about the reality of the porn
industry and specifically, teen porn. There are many things that the average porn watcher does not
know about the industry. These directors are here to tell us the truth about what happens behind the
scenes. It is a very simple process that is used to bring these girls to where the directors want them to
be. All that is required is something that grabs their attention. An example of this is an Internet ad. A
typical and for the porn industry consists of titles like the documentary hot girls wanted. In the

The Construction Industry Has Developed A Reputation For...
Ethics Paper Over the years the construction industry has developed a reputation for shady deals and
untrustworthiness. Contractors specifically are the root cause of the mistrust between the industry and
the public. When it comes to the relationships between contractors and subcontractors though there is
still a mistrust even though both sides share the same unfavorable reputation. Often times contractors
bully subcontractors into signing contracts that put them in very unfavorable positions. And after that
subcontractors bully sub subcontractors into signing equally unfavorable sub contracts. However, not
all contracts are terrible, what makes them so one sided are specific clauses that are inserted in an
attempt to transfer responsibilities from the contractor to the sub and sub subcontractors. Conditional
payment and oversight responsibility are a couple of the types of clauses that attempt to do such work.
Another clause in construction contracts attempts to protect the contractor and owner from each other
with regard to change orders, it is included to force each party to put changes into writing. For the
most part, no set of plans is perfect so inevitably changes must be made. So contractors and owners
find themselves in yet another situation where both sides have the opportunity to be as unsavory as
they can be. As the industry progresses into the future, many additional contract clauses will pop up.
They will attempt to shift more responsibility and blame off the

It s been a long wait, but the first ever live action adaptation of Wonder Woman is just about to hit the

thinking Wonder Woman is just some lady with a magic lasso. The upcoming movie should prove you
wrong, however, and there are at least five good reasons for it:
1. Critical Reception
Pop quiz, hotshots: how many DCEU movies have been a hit with the critics? The correct answer is

Even in the little screentime she had, the Israeli actress managed to bring out the perfect combination
of power and mystery Wonder Woman is known for. And if the stories from her time in the army are
anything to go by, she should be able to handle the physical demands of the role just fine.
3. Period Piece
Having World War I as the setting of Diana Prince s origin story is a bold choice, but we believe it s
likely to pay off. It helps that WWI is not often explored in movies, so the audiences haven t had time
to get sick of it yet. On a related note, this should prove to be a nice change of pace from the all the
modern day DCEU movies. You could draw some parallels with Captain America: The First Avenger,
but the two World Wars have less in common than you might think.
4. Patty Jenkins
It s still hard to believe it took Patty Jenkins 14 years to shoot her second feature film. She s been
keeping busy with some sporadic TV work, but her stellar debut Monster left us wanting to see a

The Christian Of Harry Potter Essay
The Christian themes in Harry Potter have been undermined by Christian fundamentalists beliefs that
the Potter stories are a gateway into satanic culture. While these stories are loved by so many, there is
a section of the population that condemns them as a satanic welcoming. To fully understand the
condemnation of Harry Potter and the push to eradicate this condemnation we will address several
lenses of the argument; to start there will be a quick history of the condemnation, and an overview of
that specific audiences perspective on the novels. Next to be presented will be an overview of the
Christian allegories found in the Potter novels, and finally, the argument put forward by some
Christians, Christians wishing to reclaim the Harry Potter novels as a quote on quote Christian themed

Warner Bros. in 2001. Even before it s theatrical release many educators found themselves at odds
with the novel due to it s magical nature. In March of 2000 Carol Rookwood, the head of a Catholic

Comparing Donn Rosen And Skepticism
Making a list of assumptions that inhibit scientific progress (Rosen 2016), especially when the
assumptions are mostly long held and cherished beliefs by many in comparative biology, identified
Donn Rosen as a skeptic. Skepticism has a long, storied, and varied history, which I am not going to
recount, but I can probably be safe to define skepticism as a philosophical view that raises doubts
about the adequacy or reliability of the evidence that could be offered to justify any proposition
(Popkin 2003). Now the kind of doubts, the kind of adequacy, the kind of evidence, and the kind of
justification associated with schools of skepticism vary widely, but suffice to say the general feel of
the definition covers most forms. The goal of this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rosen was not a formal skeptic in that he did not devise approaches or arguments to detect when
evidences or beliefs did not support knowledge claims. I argue he was a skeptic in that he voiced
concerns, doubts, about apparent evidence that supposedly supported particular beliefs, ideas, or
dogmas. So his skepticism was based on evidence, on his conclusions that observation did not match
theory, regardless of how dearly the theory was held by others. What Rosen certainly was not, was a
denier. As in the individual that simply denies something without regard to evidence, an evolution of
life did not happen type of denier. Rosen was lumped into the pattern cladist school that was
characterized by Beatty (1982) as being antievolution (Carpenter 1987), thus possibly considered a
denier. Brady (1982), among many others (e.g. Patterson 1982; Platnick 1982, Carpenter, 1987)
rescued pattern cladistics from the misinterpretation of Beatty. Regardless, if we are stuck with the
assumption that the evolution of life followed a strictly neo Darwinian process, then what other ideas
are left to explore when inconsistencies crop up? That was Rosen s position as a skeptic, asking can
we do cladistics without a neo darwinian covering theory? And so, we see that as his inhibiting

A Communication Analysis Of The Waterview Connection...
Have the Right Actions been Taken?
A Communication Analysis of the Waterview Connection Development
Introduction
Grunig (2013) sees public relations and communication management as fundamental to the
achievement of organisational goals. A major road and tunnelling project in West Auckland, has
required considerable planning and communication alongside its publics. The Waterview Connection
Development (WCD) is a motorway connection between State Highways 16 and 20, which, in part,
runs as tunnels. The WCD links between the central business district and the airport, and an alternative
to State Highway 1.
This essay critically assesses how the New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA) has communicated
with publics throughout the WCD. It analyses the communication activity, and applies public relations
theory.
Key Publics
Major publics with a distinct interest include residents with properties affected by the noise and
possible shifts of land, road users who may experience delays during building, and businesses that
may lose of revenue if customers find it difficult to access them. Mehta and Xavier (2009) note
engagement relationship strategies used with various publics may be different to each other and during
different parts of the project. Managers will need to negotiate with residents, road users and business
owners to minimise disruptions.
All affected sections of Auckland s multicultural population should be included in the organisation s
publics. The diversity

The History of Prison Reform
The History of Prison Reform
Introduction
The evolution of prison reform is a reflection of society s changing attitudes toward crime and
punishment. Prisons have progressed from simple places for incarceration where the primary purpose
is to protect the public to instruments of punishment where the loss of freedom is penalty for breaking
the law, to institutions for reform dedicated to mould the guilty to conform to society s norms. Prisons
were among the first public buildings erected in the New World. The city of Boston felt the need of a
house of detention when the town consisted of a mere forty homes. Early American prisons were not
conceived as houses of punishment. In English and American law, political prisoners and high ranking
prisoners of war were occasionally incarcerated, but few common criminals could expect such
treatment. Almost the only time commoners were locked away was while awaiting trial, once a verdict
was delivered, they were punished on the spot or released (Lynch, 2011). The eighteenth century
transformed not only the physical form of prisons but their function and their place in American
consciousness.
Discussion
Initially imprisonment was a means of detaining debtors to ensure payment, the accused before trial,
or the guilty before punishment. Courts imposed sentences including fines, personal mutilation such as
flogging or branding, or death (Johnson, 2011).
The only offense for which long term imprisonment was common was debt, though

Inigo Jones And The Queens House
Throughout this essay I will explore to what extent Inigo Jones s design for the Queens House was
inspired by the works of Palladio and Palladian architecture and 15 16th century European
architectural precedents, while also exploring the role the building played on the development of
Neoclassical architecture on a wider scale. The Queens House represents the stylistic point of origin
for the great imposing buildings surrounding Greenwich but also for Neo Classical architecture in
Britain more generally. The formative years of the designer, Inigo Jones (1573 1652) is largely
unknown although its believed he trained as a joiner and received no formal architectural education.

The Queens house, his first residential project gave him the chance to implement these ideas in
practice. Jones career was prolific, although a lot of what he created or modified has since
disappeared. Some of the buildings that remain include Banqueting Hall at Whitehall, the Queen s
Chapel at St James s Palace and St Paul s Church. He also consulted on the reconstruction of Somerset
House and the Covent Garden Piazza.
Palladian architecture is based on the symmetry and perspective of classical architecture, particularly
the temples of the Ancient Greeks and Romans. It was characterised by the use of pediments and
symmetry, and proportions that were based on mathematics rather than ornament. Palladian
architecture is recognisable for its classical facades. Some of the defining features of Palladianism
include the use of Corinthian columns, decorative motifs such as masked faces and scallop shells.
Pediments used over doors and windows, both external and internal. Terms free standing stones

Otariid Rearing Behavior Case Study
Otariid Rearing Behavior
In all otariid species, the male ignores young pups. There is no parental care. Often, the males are even
overly aggressive towards young pups. After parturition, the mother immediately smells the newborn
and vocalizes. The pup can vocalize within minutes of birth. Through these actions, a mother pup
bond is formed. They can then recognize each other and reestablish connections based on smell and
vocalizations (textbook). It is thought that hearing is the more efficient so that vocalizations are better
at distinguishing between individuals (3). This is beneficial in reuniting pup and mother after she
returns from her foraging trip. The female will attack females at risk of endangering their pup. They
will move the pup out of harms way if necessary by way of mouth (3). Pups are rejected by non
maternal females (4). Pups often aggregate with other pups in the same age group normally in areas
away disturbances. Pups receive no instruction in feeding and swimming from the mother. They learn
from their social ties with other pups (3).
Otariid s use a foraging cycle strategy when rearing. On average Otariid species spend 1 to 7 days
feeding and 1 to 3 days nursing offspring. Otariid s nurse their pup for 4 ... Show more content on

Lipid fat increases as the duration of the feeding trip increases (12). This suggests a correlation in
length of feeding and lipid content. The Northern fur seal spends 7 days foraging and has 51% fat
milk. Galapagos fur seal spends 12 hours foraging and has 40% fat milk. The Antarctic fur seal spends
5 days foraging and has 40% fat milk. The Galapagos sea lion spends 12 hours foraging and has 18%
milk fat. The California sea lion spends 4 days foraging and has 32% fat milk. Age and the total
number of days nursed by mother at weaning varies between species: Northern fur seal 125;125,
Galapagos fur seal 800; , Antarctic fur seal 117;117, Galapagos seal lion 341; , and the California sea
lion 300

Consumerisms In Recession
The recession that will be focused on is the most recent 2007 2009 recession. This recession cost the
US labor market 8.4 million jobs. Job loss is one of the hardest things to recover from after a
recession. Stocks go up, consumers continue with their purchases as some of them release times are
getting better. However the economy is a rollercoaster, it goes from being at the top of the track with
stocks high, and jobs growing each day to slowly descending to a crash, or in the reference of the
rollercoaster descending off of the hill that it climbed to. Consumers in today s society see a recession
as a new trend, and the way they spend reflects as such during this time. Consumerisms in a recession
are a foundation for recovery; the spending ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Previously society experienced the rise and fall more sporadically, however today, the recessions are
so close together that it is becoming more and more difficult to analyze the space in between. In the
recessions of 1974 1975 the government leaders, who took the iniative to alert people that in the
coming year they would experience a downturn, foresaw the recession. This recession was recorder to
be the worst since the 1930 s, for an accumulation of reasons; the largest factor being the American
aggression in the Vietnam War . Paul Volcker was a critic on the American dollar and the American s
involvement by stating Our failure to face up to the financing of the Vietnam war [was] one key factor
in setting up the subsequent inflation . This is a statement that could be used for any recession. Simply
by changing the war, and the point in which the quote could be referring to, there is the leading cause
to a recession. However, the war would then affect the natural state of the economy. Without the war
the government would have used the money elsewhere, would have gone where it needs to go, or
would the government find another cause to invest in? The questions of government spending follows
a dangerous line of whether the money spent in one place was worth it. However, with the investment
in war, it puts a deficit on the country, which leads

  • 3. John Brown as the Villian or Hero Essay John Brown as the Villian or Hero Brown s attack on Harper s Ferry affected American culture more than can ever be understood. Tension between the North and South was building in the 1850 s. Slavery among many other things was dividing the country into two sections. Brown was executed on December 2, 1859 for his murderous out lash on society. Was his mind so twisted and demented that he would commit cold blooded murder? The answer is no. John Brown was a man with a goal and a purpose. When he said that abolition could not be achieved without blood he was right. It is one of histories great ironies; John Brown s struggle preceded the Civil War by only 17 months. Thousands of people were killed in the Civil War, yet John Brown ... He had sired 20 children and had gone through two wives, but he still felt unfulfilled. In 1846, Brown was working as a wool merchant but nothing ever came of it. Before 1855, Brown had gone through a series of lawsuits and bankruptcies that halted his success. Gerrit Smith, a philanthropist friend of Brown s, was persuaded into giving a portion of the 120,000 acres of land he owned in upstate New York to Brown. This land would be open to refugee negroes. Brown lived on this land as a farmer for some time before realizing that people were just taking advantage of him. In 1850, the Fugitive Slave Law was passed. This law plainly stated that citizens were required to help slave catchers if inquired upon to do so. This law would make it immensely difficult for slaves to successfully escape slavery. Slaves would have to be even more careful not to run into the wrong person. John Brown along with other northerners were outraged. Many abolitionists protested and claimed this law was outrageous. • 4. The Forms Of Birth Control In The 19th Century For thousands of years forms of birth control have been around. People have fought for hundreds of years to make birth control available to all women. Birth control was banned at point in the United Sates. According to the authors at Wikipedia.org, Contraception was not restricted by the law in the United States throughout most of the 19th century, but in the 1870s a social purity movement grew in strength, aimed at outlawing vice in general, and prostitution and obscenity in particular. Composed primarily of Protestant moral reformers and middle class women, the Victorian era campaign also attacked contraception, which was viewed as an immoral practice that promoted prostitution and venereal disease. The earliest forms of birth control was reported around 3000 B.C. Condoms were made from fish bladders, linen sheaths, and even animal intestines. In the 1500 s, the first spermicides, chemicals that kill sperm, were used to kill spermatozoa. The first condoms were made from linen cloth sheaths and soaked in chemical solution and dried before using. In 1838, condoms and diaphragms were made from vulcanized rubber. A diaphragm is a shallow, bendable cup that you put inside your vagina. It covers your cervix during sex to prevent pregnancy. In 1873, the Comstock Act passed in the United States prohibiting advertisements, information, and distribution of birth control and allowing the postal service to confiscate birth control sold through the mail. However, some people criticised it for not being radical enough as it didn t help all Americans. Roosevelt started off by introducing 15 acts in his first 100 days including the alphabet agencies and the beer act. These acts and agencies were designed to help certain groups of people but this meant that some were left out. This meant that Roosevelt was forced into producing the second new deal which helped Americans in the late 1930s. • 6. Authorship Of Shakespeare Scholars and experts on literature raise the question of whether or not a commoner like William Shakespeare really did write all the works credited to his name. The Shakespeare authorship question has been a controversial topic since the 19th century. Numerous scholars have used literary analysis techniques and collected data in an attempt to discover the true author of the works credited to Shakespeare. The fact that there is still continuous work by experts on both sides of the argument establishes the sincerity of this question and the determination of researchers to find concrete evidence. Credible research by scholars prove the impossibility that anyone else wrote Shakespeare s work, negating any Anti Stratfordian argument. Research ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The Shakespeare Authorship Question , the authors compared works written by Shakespeare to pieces by other writers of the time period. On the statistical side, the correspondence of word lengths between Shakespeare and these other authors was significantly different. The researchers found that Shakespeare was one of the few authors that used more 4 letter words than any other size (2) contrasting to the higher use of 3 letter words with both Marlowe and Bacon. For Edward de Vere, the word length analysis showed a slightly higher correspondence; however, the character distribution between the two writers did not match. For de Vere, the researchers analyzed 600 lines of poetry, while with Shakespeare they analyzed 9000 lines of prose from his plays. This unequal comparison shows that not only did the authors have different styles, but they also wrote different genres making it unlikely that they were the same person. Other scholars come up with a different reason why there could be some correspondence between writers. Carol Rutter presents the idea that Shakespeare collaborated not with another playwright, but with the actors (3) whose voices may have been influenced by that of another playwright of the time. The actors most likely heard or read the plays and writings of other authors such as Bacon, Marlowe, and de Vere, which may have influenced their voices. Not only that, but the other possible authors also wrote their own plays and works. It would have been very difficult for these authors to have written their own works along with all of Shakespeare s. As quietly as possible, which never works when I am trying to, I quickly grabbed a bowl of cereal for breakfast. Checking my list and grabbing my gear I headed out to wait for a taxi in the cool fading morning. I could taste the excitement, or was that the humidity? That day began like all the other missionary kid tubing trips down the Davao River in the Philippines, full of anxious anticipation and adventure. Every once and a while, huge trees whole trees would pass by, barely making it under the rope bridge ahead of us. This only added to our excitement. This was going to be AWESOME! Serious, mysterious, and suspenseful; through third person single vision narration, Richard Connell the author of The Most Dangerous Game artfully tells the tale of Rainsford, the protagonist who was once the hunter, but is now the prey of his antagonist, General Zaroff. In the story, the General is hunting the protagonist and despite Rainsford s best effort to kill him before he is killed, the General is still hot on his trail. However, it can be seen as the story unfolds, how the author to chose to write in third person single vision. For example, the pronoun he was written, which indicates third person. Secondly, the current POV also has a single focus on the protagonist and his opinions about the general, which helps to develop the theme. Richard Connell wrote The Most Dangerous Game in third person single vision because it is the best approach to create suspense at crucial moments and develop the underlying theme. Now some may say a first person narration would better suit the story because it would create the comedic effect of dramatic irony, despite its serious tone and its plot of hunter turned prey. In some aspects they are right. However, The Most Dangerous Game is a story of survival and of possible death. A third person narrator is much more appropriate and necessary because it helps to create the much needed suspense for the crisis, when everything is at the height of its motion. The story is a serious tale and recounts the survival adventure of its protagonist Rainsford, as he sets traps to kill the general and tries to avoid being killed himself. So, the narrating voice must capture such seriousness and also create the suspense at the necessary parts of the story. • 13. Character Analysis Of The Boy In The Striped Pajamas In the book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, the main character, Bruno, changes throughout the story due to his interactions and relationship with Shmuel, a Jewish boy in a German concentration camp. Prior to meeting Shmuel, Bruno exhibited many negative character traits. For example, just after Bruno arrives at Out With, Bruno begins to complain to Maria, their maid, on all of the horrible traits the house possesses: Well, if Father s job means that we have to move away from our house and the sliding banister and my three best friends for life, then I think Father should think twice about his job, don t you? (Boyne 17). Bruno already misses his old home, which allowed him to play and make his three best friends for life . He had enjoyed the familiarness and entertainment of his own home which made moving much harder. At his new house, Bruno is disappointed that he does not have as many opportunities as he had had in Berlin. Not only did Bruno miss his old home, but his new house made him uncomfortable. When gazing out his window, Bruno spots the wall of the concentration camp as He put his face to the glass and saw what was out there, and this time when his eyes opened wide and his mouth made the shape of an O, and his hands stayed by his sides because something made him feel very cold and unsafe (Boyne 19). Before meeting Shmuel, Bruno is lonely at Out With. He has been hoping for an adventurous exploration to go on, yet finding out the unknown about these people makes him uncomfortable. Unsure of the wall s purpose, the wall gives him an eerie feeling. He does not recognize these people either, nor does he know the reasoning on why they are behind the wall. This is not the kind of adventure Bruno was looking for. Bruno s life before meeting Shmuel was very lonely and dull, yet after meeting his new friend, Bruno began to rather enjoy his time in Poland. After befriending Shmuel, Bruno s thoughts and opinions on Out With are altered as his loneliness has faded. To illustrate, when Bruno and Shmuel meet for the first time, each boy takes his turn sharing something about himself. • 14. Classical Psychedelics And Dissociative Drugs As we know, hallucinogens are a type of drug that specialize in distorting the way a user perceives time, motion, colors, sounds, and self, or simply, causing psychological consequences onto their victims (Volkow 2015). However, the Foundation for a Drug Free World (FDFW) prefers to link the term hallucinations , or psychological experiences in seeing images, hearing sounds and feeling sensations that seem very real but do not exist, to hallucinogens as a better and summarized definition replacement (2016). True to some level, the two categories that make up hallucinogens, classical psychedelics and dissociative drugs, each specialize into specific psychological harm, which correspondingly, simplifies our broad description in what hallucinogens commonly cause. Once a classical hallucinogen, like LSD, psilocybin, and DMT, is taken and ingested, psychological effects consisting of psychotic like episodes that can occur long after a person has taken the drug, massive mood swings, emotions to swing wildly and unpredictably, real world sensations to appear unreal, and ultimately intense modifications in the sensorium, the sense of self, and the experience of reality, are all experienced throughout the phase up until the presence of the hallucinogen is no longer present in the body (Volkow 2016, Alonso 2015). The notes nurses take play an important part in their role as health care advocates and affect the quality of care the patients receive. Notes are essential because they prove that the necessary care was ensued upon the patient and can be used as a reference for other nurses who will be caring for the patient. Notes can be used to advocate for the decisions the nurse had previously made in the case of false allegations or complains therefore they should be detailed, unambiguous and comprehensible. Nurses should avoid general statements as they tend to be misguiding or misleading and might cause complications that could have a negative effect on the patient s comfort and health. Even though it might be difficult nurses should aim to write out full medical terms whenever feasible. If nurses are not able to write out the medical terms then they should use terms that are familiar to other nurses and physicians. The notes that were provided are atrocious, faulty and dangerous because they aren t objective, the data is not supported by descriptions of specific observations or actions taken and lastly there s an abundance of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. Subjective descriptions tend to be counterproductive as they don t provide sufficient information about the patient s current state, an example from the notes would be Woke vitals at 10. He then talks in each chapter about various viruses such as, HIV, swine flu, small pox and many other. He discusses about their impact on our environment, and how they originated. The study noted that while it is not always practical to have doctors deployed to certain regions where medical need is required, telemedicine and empowering people through video and cellular communication is critical in areas to prevent disease from occurring in the first place, especially in places like the rural poor, where delivering medicine is a ... It occurs when McQueen, playing Papillon, is in solitary confinement and is obviously on the point of dying. He goes into a sort of coma and starts seeing friends of his who are now dead. Then an authoritarian sounding voice says, I accuse you of a wasted life. It is on this subject that I write this particular essay. Many of us of heard of Abraham Maslow s Pyramid of Human Needs. We know a little about the basic needs of food, shelter, et cetera. We know of feelings of belonging and self esteem. Contractors specifically are the root cause of the mistrust between the industry and the public. When it comes to the relationships between contractors and subcontractors though there is still a mistrust even though both sides share the same unfavorable reputation. Often times contractors bully subcontractors into signing contracts that put them in very unfavorable positions. And after that subcontractors bully sub subcontractors into signing equally unfavorable sub contracts. However, not all contracts are terrible, what makes them so one sided are specific clauses that are inserted in an attempt to transfer responsibilities from the contractor to the sub and sub subcontractors. Conditional payment and oversight responsibility are a couple of the types of clauses that attempt to do such work. Another clause in construction contracts attempts to protect the contractor and owner from each other with regard to change orders, it is included to force each party to put changes into writing. For the most part, no set of plans is perfect so inevitably changes must be made. So contractors and owners find themselves in yet another situation where both sides have the opportunity to be as unsavory as they can be. While these stories are loved by so many, there is a section of the population that condemns them as a satanic welcoming. To fully understand the condemnation of Harry Potter and the push to eradicate this condemnation we will address several lenses of the argument; to start there will be a quick history of the condemnation, and an overview of that specific audiences perspective on the novels. Rosen was not a formal skeptic in that he did not devise approaches or arguments to detect when evidences or beliefs did not support knowledge claims. I argue he was a skeptic in that he voiced concerns, doubts, about apparent evidence that supposedly supported particular beliefs, ideas, or dogmas. So his skepticism was based on evidence, on his conclusions that observation did not match theory, regardless of how dearly the theory was held by others. What Rosen certainly was not, was a denier. As in the individual that simply denies something without regard to evidence, an evolution of life did not happen type of denier. Regardless, if we are stuck with the assumption that the evolution of life followed a strictly neo Darwinian process, then what other ideas are left to explore when inconsistencies crop up? The Waterview Connection Development (WCD) is a motorway connection between State Highways 16 and 20, which, in part, runs as tunnels. The WCD links between the central business district and the airport, and an alternative to State Highway 1. It analyses the communication activity, and applies public relations theory. Key Publics Major publics with a distinct interest include residents with properties affected by the noise and possible shifts of land, road users who may experience delays during building, and businesses that may lose of revenue if customers find it difficult to access them. Mehta and Xavier (2009) note engagement relationship strategies used with various publics may be different to each other and during different parts of the project. • 40. The History of Prison Reform The History of Prison Reform Introduction The evolution of prison reform is a reflection of society s changing attitudes toward crime and punishment. Prisons have progressed from simple places for incarceration where the primary purpose is to protect the public to instruments of punishment where the loss of freedom is penalty for breaking the law, to institutions for reform dedicated to mould the guilty to conform to society s norms. Prisons were among the first public buildings erected in the New World. The city of Boston felt the need of a house of detention when the town consisted of a mere forty homes. Early American prisons were not conceived as houses of punishment. In English and American law, political prisoners and high ranking prisoners of war were occasionally incarcerated, but few common criminals could expect such treatment. Almost the only time commoners were locked away was while awaiting trial, once a verdict was delivered, they were punished on the spot or released (Lynch, 2011). The eighteenth century transformed not only the physical form of prisons but their function and their place in American consciousness. Discussion Initially imprisonment was a means of detaining debtors to ensure payment, the accused before trial, or the guilty before punishment. Courts imposed sentences including fines, personal mutilation such as flogging or branding, or death (Johnson, 2011). The only offense for which long term imprisonment was common was debt, though ... Often, the males are even overly aggressive towards young pups. After parturition, the mother immediately smells the newborn and vocalizes. The pup can vocalize within minutes of birth. Through these actions, a mother pup bond is formed. They can then recognize each other and reestablish connections based on smell and vocalizations (textbook). It is thought that hearing is the more efficient so that vocalizations are better at distinguishing between individuals (3). This is beneficial in reuniting pup and mother after she returns from her foraging trip. The female will attack females at risk of endangering their pup.
