Should the Canadian Senate be left alone, reformed or abolished?
By: Shakir M. Lakhani SECTION 4
Final Civics Essay

Shakir M. Lakhani
Topic: Senate Reform
Do you feel your government is fair? Does it manage the issues properly, with careful thought, and an
open, objective mind? Is it effective? Do you feel that the Senate is a sober chamber of second
thought? Do you feel that the best interests of the Canadian public are always preserved in the current
model of our governance? If so, you re mistaken. Under our present governance, we have two houses,
the House of Commons, and the Senate, the reform to the latter being the main topic of ... Show more

In terms of the reform option, as a country, we absolutely cannot afford to abolish the Senate, as it
serves as, and is meant to be, a body of un biased economic and social élite , who are capable of
making/approving decisions to benefit the citizens of Canada, rather than the House of Commons,
which makes decisions by majority, and in their own interest. The Senate is meant to play a neutral
role, to be the final judge to make the un biased, informed decisions. Sometimes, the Senate has taken
on other roles, which it performs and works with very effectively. In fairness to them, these often do
not receive much media coverage, increasing the public perception that Senators do very little. For
example, the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science, and Tech released a report on the
Health Care system, a month before the Romanow Report on Human Health Resources Planning.
They have also researched issues such as poverty in Canada, and legalizing Marijuana.
No matter which angle one looks at this from, the effective existence of the Senate is necessary to
stabilize the government, as it is near to impossible to have an ideal House of Commons, as confirmed
by an English political journalist Walter Bagehot.
He wrote about the British parliamentary System (which our system is based off), and was quoted
saying, If we had an ideal House of Commons...

Stereotyping In Choir Boy
There are various times that people face different forms of discrimination, whether that be from past
historical events that caused those forms of discrimination to form, such as the Jim Crow laws and the
Separate but Equal doctrine that allowed for racial segregation in restaurants, trains, and several other
place that one would not expect nowadays. However these same discriminations that took hold of
many lives, both in the past and the present, have also taken into account forms of stereotyping.
Stereotyping is the putting of labels on any person should act or behave based on their race, religion,
and/or sex as well as several other features and facts. However, stereotyping is not something that is

Drew , is a place where African American boys are taught to lead and are usually in their school choir.
In this play, the protagonist, Pharus Jonathan Young, is a young African American boy who struggles
with his sexuality as well as the treatment he receives for being more effeminate than his fellow
classmates. However, there is the fact that as Pharus sings at the very beginning of the play, there are
homophobic slurs being thrown his way, demonstrating the hostile environment that he would most
likely be facing at his school, not just because he is gay, but also because of the faith that those boys
had as well as the stereotyping of black males masculinity. As the play goes on, Pharus grows as a
character and becomes more aware and more comfortable in his own skin as well as making his
classmates see that just because he is a homosexual does not mean that should be treated any
differently than the rest. As a matter of fact, in a portion of the play that takes place in the boy s locker
room, the five young men all come out and sing Motherless Child, which in turn united the group of
boys without much of an effort, except that they were finally able to see their similarities rather than
their differences and in a much more soothing, calmed, and honest form of communication than the
fights and constant bullying. Not only is Pharus able to overcome these obstacles, he is also able to
demonstrate to his classmates, both directly and indirectly, how those stereotypes hurt him and made
his peers unfriendly. Not only that, but in a way, it also represented Tarell McCraney s difficult life as
a homosexual African American. Not only did the stereotypes portrayed by the characters of Tarell
Alvin McCraney s demonstrate the difficulties of being different and growing up in a predominately
prejudices community of African Americans. But through Tarell McCraney s skillful writing, he is

Middle School Curriculum Night
Curriculum Night
Rationale
As students move from an elementary school setting to a middle school setting, ensuring a smooth
transition is a collaborative effort involving teachers, parents, students and school administration.
Often parents and students are nervous about the magnitude of this transition and easing those
concerns can be handled by hosting a curriculum night. The purpose of Curriculum Night is to
acquaint all students and parents with their teachers and administration as well as provide useful
information concerning what the student will learn and the environment in which he/she will learn.

Both the external debt, as a ratio of GDP, and the public sector deficit had fallen to 36% and 1,5%,
respectively. The dependence on the petroleum export was reduced and it accounted for only 29% of
exports in 1991, compared to 77% in 1982. There had been a tremendous structural shift within
sectors where the ownership, market shares and responsibility between the government and the private
sector became more evenly distributed. The government was highly involved in public utilities,
petroleum, banking and some manufacturing industries, while the private sector dominated the
remaining areas (especially manufacturing, mining, commerce, entertainment and service industries).
The main economic goals of the Mexican government in 1991 were to lower inflation, modernize the
economy and improve the standard of living for the poorest inhabitants. In order to control the
inflation, that had spiked to over 159% in 1987 (www.banxico.org.mx), the government introduced
several new policies: 1) reduce the fiscal deficit and the public sectors internal debt, 2) control
aggregate demand, 3) temper real wage increases, 4) limit price increases, and 5) sterilize capital
inflows. The government also developed different measures in order to encourage foreign direct
investments in Mexico. This implied controlled devaluation rate of the peso (target per year of 5,5%),

The Problem Of Chronic Homelessness
According to suitcaseclinic.org homelessness is a temporary condition that people fall into when they
cannot afford to pay for a place to live, or when their current home has been declared unsafe or even
unstable. According to Habitat.org, this issue affects between 1.6 million to close to 3 million people
within the United States. The issue is growing throughout the world, but what is the root cause? Many
people wonder how they can help. Most tend to believe that the solution is as simple as just giving
them money to use for daily living. Even though their root cause for their issue isn t money. It is the
fact that they either don t know how to use their money properly/ responsibly. The main causes of
chronic homelessness include poverty, disability, mental illness, along with substance abuse or
addiction. Poverty is a hard but doable cycle to break and becomes more and more difficult to get out
once you start to fall behind a specific income level. Once people reach that point they then usually
are not able to obtain the proper resources for the acquired knowledge and resources that are necessary
for a higher paying job. Disability affects a great percentage of the homeless. This is usually caused by
some injury that prevents them from working numerous jobs within their societies and without their
dependable income they then fall into the poverty cycle. Mental illness impacts the homeless with
diseases like depression, PTSD, and schizophrenia. When these illnesses are

Effect Of The Halo Effect
In the video, The Halo Effect Science of Attraction, the speakers conduct an experiment to find what
impact the halo effect has on personal relationships and the way we perceive others. The Halo Effect
is a type of cognitive bias in which our overall impression of a person influences how we feel and
think about his or her character. The experiment consisted of two groups of women seeing two
different sides of the same guy. The team will then investigate how easily we deceive ourselves. Mr. X

In the 90s, at Harvard University, a psychologist Nalini Ambady and her colleagues did multiple
experiments comparing the ratings given to college professors by classes at the end of the semester
with ratings that another group of students gave the same professors based only on three ten second
silent voice clips shown prior to any actual lectures. They found that both of the groups agreed on how
good or bad the professors were. Another question was brought to the table; is we re not consciously
and rationally judging people, what causes us to initially like or dislike them? Daniel Kahneman a
Nobel Prize winning author and psychologist believes the answer lies in the mental shortcuts we use
to help us make decisions. An idea, based off a book called What You See Is All There Is, is that when
the mind makes a decision it deals only in known knowns and largely ignores facts about that might
make decisions more complex. For example, when we meet someone that we know very little about,
we decide that we all know is what is true and ignore the new facts. The lasting effects of this belief
can damage relationships with other people.
While reading this article I felt that I could take on any future job interview head on. It gives the
science behind first impressions and suggests advantages to help in your first impression. It is
interesting to know that there is a scientific term for people being attracted to one another. The concept

The Story of an Hour, by Kate Chopin Essay
The Story of an Hour is a stark display of female rejection of the norms of society. This work, by Kate
Chopin, begins with a woman going through the stages of grief for her husband s death. For the wife,
Louise Mallard, this was an awakening of a new life. This new life is cut short as the information that
led her to believe this news turns our false. Kate Chopin reveals that even the desire for love is
trumped by the need for freedom and independence, through her use of precise diction and syntax, and
symbolism. With respect to word choice, Chopin foreshadows the idea that it was possible that Mrs.
Mallard s husband was not dead at all. From the start she describes the news as possible (79). To
further show this, she chooses to use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is comfortable and roomy (79). These descriptors help the reader to understand the transition she is
going through. Due to the loss of her husband, she now has room to live her life, and to do so
comfortably, without the intrusion or imposition of her husband. The outside world is described as
being aquiver with the new spring life (79). She also describes the feeling of freedom as creeping out
of the sky (80). It is hard for Mrs. Mallard to accept the new feelings of her freedom. The feeling had
to creep due to the fact that her freedom was granted on the premise of her husband s death. This
feeling, however, comes out of the sky as to show the new life promised to her, but it is still hard for
her to believe that she wanted this freedom more than love. This is further displayed by the use of the
phrase monstrous joy (80). The juxtaposition of these words shows very well the emotional state of
Louise Mallard. The joy she is feeling is something that others could call monstrous, but the prison
she was in previously could never be called joyful. Most important is the repetition of the word free
(80). Muttering this under her breath is a sign that she cannot believe what she is even saying. It is at
this moment that she realizes that she is free and can now enjoy her life as an independent person. In
resisting this new emotion Mrs. Mallard was feeling, Chopin describes her as powerless as her two
white slender hands would have been (80).

How Is Colonialism In Robinson Crusoe
Robinson Crusoe was published in 1719, it was the beginning of the 17th century that had magnificent
changes in the economic order. The rise of capitalism throughout the period individuals to a system of
evaluation that varied a little from aristocratic tradition. An individual s place in the society was
determined by the type of profession one does within the society. According to Seidel Robinson,
Crusoe represents a prototype of a culture, a religion and ideology (1991: 50). He is then portrayed as
a true Englishman who really loved to increase the English territory and its autonomy. He is the figure
of English imperialism, capitalism and more especially colonialism. According to Reinhart
colonialism in terms of a history of ideas constitutes a developmental differential due to the control of
one people by an alien or foreign one (2008:1).
Colonialism is not limited to a specific time or place. However, in the 16th century, colonialism
changed decisively because of technological developments in navigation that began to connect more
remote parts of the world. Quicker sailing ships made it possible to reach distant seaports and to

European life in the 17th century when the novel Robinson Crusoe was written it was seen a fact

While it is not clear what the future of GLONASS will be, currently, it appears that there is resurgence
in the availability of GLONASS signals and receivers that can process these signals. Despite the
popularity of GPS, many users are interested in alternative systems. This is motivated, in part, by the
fact that GPS is a system operated and controlled by the U.S. Department of Defense. As such, some
users may want to retain a navigation capability that is not solely GPS based. Another, more technical,
motivation for this is due to the fact that GPS (or any other GNSS) is a single system, and it is
conceivable that a single failure can result in a denial of service to a large number of users. Multiple
GNSS may provide a level of redundancy and, thus, an added degree of robustness to GNSS
applications. The Galileo constellation is the European Union s effort to provide both an alternative
and a compliment to GPS. The first Galileo satellite was launched in December 2005 and transmitted
test signals shortly afterward. The Galileo constellation is tentatively expected to become operational
sometime after 2010.In addition to GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo there are other GNSS currently in
development, such as the China s COMPASS constellation. This GNSS is being designed and
implemented by China and currently has a growing user base in that region. COMPASS is currently in

Keats Use Of Figurative Language
In the poem When I Have Fears That I May Cease to be, John Keats reveals his overbearing fear of
dying young. What if he never gets to feel the passions of true love? What if he never gets to write the
mountains of books that he wishes to write? What if he never gets to experience the fame that he so
desires? Fear of not being able to complete our goals before we die is a fear that lurks in the dark
crevices of all of our minds. We must all find a way to fight this fear. Most people do it by blocking it
out completely, but not Keats. Keats confronts his fear full force by announcing it to the public.

This was Keats s goal as a romantic writer: to connect with the reader, to portray his ideas in the form
of art, and to make the reader see from his point of view. With his use of colorful figurative language,
such as repetition, imagery, and personification, Keats accomplishes his goal. The reason that Keats is
so successful in painting a clear picture is because he uses his imagination to write (King). By writing
his poem in the form of a Shakespearean sonnet consisting of three quatrains (King), Keats, like any
great artist, clearly states the point he is trying to make. Apprehension of a young demise is a plague
that haunts us all. In When I Have Fears That I May Cease to be, Keats takes our hands and reassures

Emily Dickinson Death
The poem Because I could not stop for Death (479) by Emily Dickinson describes author s concept of
the last seconds of a life as well as her concept of the death. The poem follows a comparatively simple
ABCB rhyme scheme, which indicates that the poetess s goal is not to exercise her writing skills, but
to reflect her opinion. By this poem Emily Dickinson presents a new way of thinking about the death.
The speaker of the poem, assumingly a female, does not expect her own death her life is so active and

Our aspiration is for a more socially mobile and just society, where young people can be the authors of
their own life story. (Tim Loughton MP, 2011)

Simply having a job at all is the limit of their ambition. The low aspirations of these working class
young people embed the status quo. These young people see nothing wrong with their life plans and
were, for the most part, perfectly happy with their lot in life. Most of the young people come from
homes where money is tight and only a few of them sport the latest trainer or gadget.
The school system supports the dominant ideology, Kingsmeadow is classed by Ofsted (2010) as a
good school, even though, the Governments own league table place Kingsmeadow School second to
bottom in educational attainment within the Borough.
These young people are generally happy at school, the atmosphere is pleasant and reasonably
respectful but exam results are poor. Gramsci would state that the education system was enabling the
hegemonic ideology by consent and perpetrating the false consciousness that this level of attainment
and aspiration is normal and entirely appropriate for these young people. Neither student, parent,
teacher, governor nor the wider community appear to challenge the status quo.
Young people from higher social classes are enabled to succeed and to have higher aspirations from
early childhood. Access to higher attaining schools, being able to pay for private education, or being
able to move house to be close to a better school; involvement in extracurricular activities, such as

Leadership Approach Paper – Behavioral Approach
Leadership Approach Paper
Organizations depend on the management and leadership skills of individuals in order to be
successful. Leaders do not have to be managers but are equally important. Leaders are individuals who
possess traits, behavior and abilities to influence others to accomplish tasks and other needed
objectives for the company. Leadership is defined as the ability of an individual to influence, motivate,
and enable others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the organization. . . . (House et
al., 1999, pg. 184).
According to Yuki, G. (2010) there are five different leadership approaches that are being researched.
These five approaches are:

2. Behavior approach
3. Power influence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a not an easy task to change behavior, especially if a person is not interested in change. This is
approach seems to best fit my personal leadership approach. Looking back at my previous
employment as a financial associate at Boone County National Bank, I can relate to the definition of
the behavioral approach. I was always concerned about given tasks and people. My behavior
influenced others to follow and start behaving the same way I did. A great example is the way I used
to deal with my customers. I was friendly, concerned with their business and ensured that they were
well taken care of. By being concerned and open minded, I completed sales and other branch needed
tasks without pushing or forcing myself on someone. With a combination of traits and behavior me
and my colleagues made a great team and were able to complete all tasks on time, efficiently and
effectively as well as satisfy all of our customers and managers. Looking back over the
accomplishments of the branch I worked in as well as my personal accomplishments, I feel proud of
what I have helped accomplish.
Conclusion
Understanding the difference between effective management and effective leadership is important.
Leaders are not always born leaders; they can be formed into leaders if that is what they want. All five
leadership approaches combined would form the perfect leader but each individual has special traits
and behaviors that can make one into a leader. The behavioral

Big Fish And Atonement Comparative Essay
The two movies Atonement and Big Fish are very similar although at first, the average viewer would

historical fiction movie Atonement and the wild extreme imagery that the narrators from Big Fish, a

that make these films similar. The film Atonement at first seemed like it had four different narrators,

Native American Binary System
Gender is a complex socially constructed idea. Often people interchangeably use gender to refer to
someone s sex. This is not the case. Sex is the biological characteristics that makes someone a male,
female or intersex. Gender however is made up of expression, identity, and sexual orientation. Gender
identity is how one views themselves such as a woman, man or transgender. Gender identity does not
correspond to the sex of that person. Gender expression is how one expresses their gender identity.
This could be through a masculine , feminine or androgynous expression. In Western societies,

labeled berdache which meant male prostitute ( ). Even early anthropologist were not able to grasp the
concept of not having a binary system and ultimately associated these men with homosexuality,
transvestism, and hermorphaism ( ). The term two spirit was adopted in 1990 to get rid of the term
berdache. Two spirit was adopted to get rid of the binary negativity associated with berdache and
embrace the spiritual diversity of the Native people. Two spirit people have both a masculine and
feminine spirit. An example of this is the third gender of the Navajo called the nadleeh. The nadleeh
acts as a another gender in the Navajo s gender system. The nadleeh could be a male gender who takes
on women s roles such as language and work or a masculine female bodied ( ). Sexual relations with
nadleeh were not stigmatized as though they may share the same biological sex, they were a different

Neuromuscular Dysphagia Treatment
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a type of therapy used as a form of treatment for
swallowing disorders (dysphagia). This method involves placing electrodes on one or several external
sites on the anterior neck to which an electrical current is applied to peripheral tissue targets (Clark,
Lazarus, Arvedson, Schooling, Frymark, 2009, p 362). it is hypothesized that such stimulation aims to
improve function by strengthening the swallowing musculature or by stimulating the sensory
pathways relevant to swallowing or both. To facilitate strengthening, muscle contractions elicited via
NMES generally recruit larger and more motor units than voluntary contractions, causing metabolic
responses within the muscle tissue that ultimately ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The primary diagnosis associated with these participants dysphagia is stroke in three out of the six
participants , and all participants were under the age of 90 (Carnaby Mann and Crary, 2008). The
investigation was about whether NMES was effective treatment for swallowing disorders. The
participants had to obtain a score of 23 or greater on the mini mental state examination (MMSE) and a
score of 5 or less on the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS), and lastly the participants could not
have received swallowing therapy within the last three months (Carnaby Mann and Crary 2008).
Before therapy began baseline scores were collected including clinical and instrumental swallowing
evaluation, documentation of weight and the participants of self perception of swallowing ability. The
Mann Assessment of swallowing ability (MASA) was used to assess swallowing ability. A
videofluoroscopic swallowing evaluation was conducted to confirm the presence of pharyngeal
dysphagia (Carnaby Mann and Crary 2008). Materials used in this examination were thin liquid,
nectar thick liquid, and pudding in both 5ml 10ml amounts, and modified per participant. Effort was
made to present each material to each participant, but if participant aspirated in large quantities the

Describe The Color Blue
When I see the color blue, I think of my pale blue, stuffed bunny that I got when I was three years old.
I named him Blue Sky after the huge expanse of pale blue that loomed over my head as I played
outside and blew bubbles in my backyard on warm summer days. I wanted him to become my new
playmate, looking up at the clouds with me as I found shapes in them and marvled at the cloudy trails
left by airplanes. My earliest memories are filled with the color blue. It was the color of my first
glasses, my favorite toy, and the best slide on the playground across the street from my house, all
seemingly simple objects that my young mind grasped onto in a way that made them monumental.
These things made up my entire world at a time when I was completely carefree, my mind full of
wonder when experiencing even the simplest things. I still think back to my early childhood
sometimes when I look up at the sky on a cloudless day, and it reminds me to stop and appreciate the
little things sometimes when the world starts to feel overwhelming. ... Show more content on

Once I was old enough, I would go exploring with my older sisters in those woods to escape the
feelings of fear and unease that I constantly experienced in the real world at home. Surrounded by

survivor trying to find my way back to civilization. Those woods were filled with birdsong and the
buzz of insects, creating a feeling of peace and oneness with nature that allowed me to escape and find
a place where I felt like I could truly belong without fear of judgement. I still feel a sense of calm

The Rise Of Democracy Throughout Europe Essay
The Rise of Democracy in Europe The rise of democracy within Europe was vital to the importance of
the individual, and was marked by a transition from the governing by one feudal lord, to the governing
by an elected official. This transition brought change not only to humanistic thinking, but also enabled
mankind to have basic human rights which improved life for the country s citizens. This shift of
thinking to the rights of individuals was spurred by the Protestant Reformation and the creation of the
social contract which enabled a perfect atmosphere for the rise of democracy within Europe. During
the feudal system, military lords ruled the people with little regard for human rights. The people were
used only as pawns for the wellbeing of the feudal system and were seen as such, but with the rise of
an economy based on money instead of land, the feudal system began to rapidly decline. As the feudal
system dwindled away, the individual rights of man increased with the rise of the market economy,
which in turn propelled the spirit of democracy within the people (International Center for Peace and
Development ). While money began to circulate within this new type of economy, the financial
stability of the monarchs began to collapse, while the merchant class was becoming wealthy. This
transition of wealth tore down the stronghold that had suppressed the population during the feudal
system, and allowed the wealthy merchant power to become important political figures.

Space Exploration Persuasive Essay
The concept of space exploration was first introduced to the American public in 1961 when President
John F. Kennedy famously stood before congress and vowed that America would put a man on the
moon within the decade. With hopes of defeating the Soviet Union in the Space Race and gaining a
leg up in the Cold War, NASA funding reached its all time high in 1965 1966 when about four percent
of the federal budget was devoted to exploring space. Since then however, funding dedicated to
exploring space has nose dived to about one half of a percent of the federal budget (Tyson), with plans
to cut that figure by an additional $260 million in 2017 (cite NASA funding cuts). Experts in the space
sciences field argue that increased funding in space exploration would re ignite the American economy
and return America to the scientific prominence it was once known for, while, on the other end of the
spectrum, naysayers suggest that exploring space is an economic sink hole that the United States can
no longer afford to deposit to given its own earth bound troubles. The biggest affect increased space
exploration would have could be its change on the education landscape. In 1998, NASA scientists
Adriana Ocampo, Louis Friedman, and John Logsdon explored NASA s effect on education in their
article, Why Space Science and Exploration Benefit Everyone. Though their writing is nearly 20 years
old, Ocampo, Friedman, and Logsdon explain why handcuffing NASA creates a brain drain in

Finally, the dog escapes, and the roo turns his attention to Tonkins. In a bold move, Tonkins punches

for Tonkins that the animal backed off. Or, this could have been a very different story. In October of

Modern Tragedy Analysis
Is Modern Tragedy Truly Tragedy?
(A critique of Stephen King s inspired movie The Green Mile as it relates to Aristotle s Poetics)
Tragedy is an imitation, not of men, but of an action and of life, and life consists in action, and its end
is a mode of action, not a quality (Butcher). Aristotle says that tragedy has more to do with the action
of the plot than the characters themselves. Tragedy is best defined as a drama that includes a clear plot
line and a protagonist who has a character flaw that leads to his or her downfall. Character flaws occur
in many ways, for some it is excessive pride, for others it is just the need to be kind to others and
disregarding a person s own health. The major difference between a tragedy and a comedy is ... Show

The tragic hero, consequently, should be a man better than ourselves, but not perfect; and he should
suffer from a flaw which shows itself in some mistaken judgement or act resulting in his downfall
(Poetics Packet). While it may not seem like a flaw, Coffey s character flaw is that he has some sort of
supernatural healing power which, in a way, got him into the death row area of prison to begin with.
Coffey performs an act where he touches ill people and for whatever reason, the person is cured, and
Coffey coughs up insects that represent the negative things leaving a person s body as the individual
heals. As the movie wraps up, Paul and various other guards are aware of John s innocence, yet there
is no evidence so he will have to be put to death regardless. Throughout the movie, men are put to
death and the audience can see just how gruesome that is, yet people often feel little remorse or pity
for the first several executions in the movie. The thing that is so emotional about John Coffey s
execution is that the viewers are aware he is being put to death even though he is innocent. Virtually
no one feels the urge to execute an innocent man, but many feel the urge to execute someone who is
guilty (Dow). That is a highly accurate statement, the majority of people have no issue killing a guilty
person, but the real tearjerker is being

Open Door Policy Essay
In addition to the failure of the first aspect of the US open door policy, the second principle that the
Chinese government should be able to tax trade also failed due to internal conflict. Before the US
Open door policy in 1899 1900, the Sino Japanese war had caused chaos and fear in China. The fear
of foreign powers and another invasion was one of the main reasons for the Revolution of 1911. Led
by Sun Yat sen the revolution was a response partially to the Boxer Rebellion of 1905 and the Sino
Japanese War. The reason for the rebellion was the violation of what Sun called the 3 Principles . The
first of these three principles was called nationalism and it advocated Chinese independence from
foreign rule and because of the increasing nationalist sentiment, the people of China ... Show more

In addition to internal conflict, the second proposition of the Open Door Policy failed due to responses
to anti chinese policies in the US. Similar to the Boxer Rebellion, the Boycott of 1905 represented the
anti colonial and anti foreign sentiment the Chinese had developed through years of built up anger.
The implementation of the Open Door Policy was at just the wrong time. It was released during the
height of the Boxer Rebellion when xenophobic sentiments were at their peak (insert evidence). The
timing of the US Open Door policy in addition to the internal conflict in China lead to the Open Door
Policy becoming somewhat useless. However, the Boycott of 1905 was not a response to internal
problems, but a response to American policy that discriminated against Chinese people. Additionally,
it was not a single policy that caused this conflict, but a string a policies starting in 1882 with the
Chinese Exclusion Act, which was the first major lawful exclusion of any race in the US. Predictably,
this caused tension between American and Chinese people, as well as their

Essay on A Child Soldier s Life
Carolina Quinones
Mr. Paradis
English 10
11 June 2013
A Child Soldier s Life The life of a child soldier is not an easy one; it s full of violence and bloodshed.
Children from most ages get recruited and are forced to do things that they are against, things that are
against their beliefs. But although child soldiers suffer through many mental disorders, they can still
be respectable adults. They go through many things, the recruiting itself, then the violence, after
comes the horrifying rehabilitation and last they are finally reintegrated into society. In A Long Way
Gone, Ishmael suffered from these things, himself explaining that at some point in his life, he just
went numb to everything (Beah 121).

they put the child in a rehabilitation center and try to give them a new cycle, like going to school and
such and last they reintegrate them into society, both socially, economically and emotionally ( Recent
Developments in International Rehabilitation of Child Soldiers ). Different methods are taken to help
these children rehabilitate, but none the less, they are rehabilitated, and helped, taken away from the
war and returned to their childhoods.
After the children are rehabilitated, they are reintegrated into society with the hope that they will
continue their lives violence free. Actual studies have been made to evaluate the process of the
children after they are rehabilitated and thrown back into society. In the study, children who had killed
someone increased levels in hostility, others who survived rape also had high levels of anxiety and
hostility but they had shown greater confidence and prosocial attitudes. At the end of the study, the
improved community acceptance lowered levels of depression and improved confidence and prosocial
attitudes despite the violent past. (Betancourt, Sierra Leone s Former Child Soldiers: A Follow up
Study of Psychological Adjustment and Community Reintegration ). The study showed that despite

Argumentative Essay On Political Reform
The social welfare groups, who deviously serve as underground pipelines for the furtive money are
considered harmless by the American public. Unknowingly, that these grossly mis designated
organizations accept secret donations and use the money to sway elections in the favor of some
devious donors. They do this by spending millions of dollars for campaigns, electioneering under the
tag of a humanitarian welfarist that supports the principles of the welfare state, barraging the airwaves
with negative political commercials and so far an inexplicable provision in U.S law seem to allow
that. And when the government supervisory body actually take the action to investigate these
Machiavellian dealings, typically the election is over and the sometimes ... Show more content on

way every time because should the federal watchdogs dare track down an incident like that, the
villains of such groups would publicize their victimization by the federal agencies and their networks

system and no potential election reform.
Thanks to our representative democratic system, America is becoming more Oligarchic since our one
person, one vote method continues to help the superrich as they continue to stealthily tilt the voting
scale in their favor. This discouraging state of affairs continues to thrive all because some devious
representatives also profit from it, and they are very crafty in how they shield the public view from
their obscure mechanisms. Money should not influence elections, this is not true of

16 Years On The Street Quotes
My essay is about the quote in the book: 16 years on the street and you can learn a lot but not the
things you want to learn. This quote implies to Dallas Winston, who is seventeen years old. He spent
three years on the wild side of New York, and he was jailed at the age of ten. That contributes to his
tough personality, along with the fact that his parents don t care about him. Dallas doesn t really care
about anybody except his gang who are like his family. He treats Johnny Cade a member of the gang
like a son. This quote is about Dallas, because he was hardened by spending 16 years on the street. He
is very calm when Ponyboy and Johnny tell him how Johnny killed a Soc, which means he has
probably dealt with this kind of situation. Another reason it implies to him, because he doesn t take
criticism from anybody. He also steals regularly, and he has a very long record with the police, of
which he is proud about. When Dally gets angry, no one messes with him not even Darry, the
unofficial leader of the gang. All these reasons point to the fact that 16 years on the street has changed

Brown was Henderson s friend and business partner. Looking through the yearbooks of this time

as a public university was a Bible studies course that seems as if was a requirement. Majors were very
broad in the 20 s, with no concentration in a particular area in relation to today. Today we have

Henry Moore Seated Woman Analysis
Henry Moore s Seated Woman, 1958 59
In this paper I will describe my interpretation of the sculpture through visual observation. Henry
Moore is said to be the most important British sculptor of the 20th century, and the most popular and
internationally celebrated sculptor of the post war period. Moore, believed that a material had its own
vitality and therefore used a direct carving technique and worked on the material directly instead of
molding and casting. Moore was inspired by the human body and the nature. This led him to creating
abstract forms to draw analogies between the human body and landscape. (Henry Moore Biography,
Art, and Analysis of Works. (n.d.). Retrieved June 21, 2016, from http://www.theartstory.org/artist

the sculptor or the torso seems to be the most disproportionate. The arms of the sculptor are not well
defined and one arm might even appear to be crossed over her breast while her breast seem to be full
and voluptuous. From the back, the sculptor is much more defined as you can clearly see that it is a

Lakhani SECTION 4 Final Civics Essay June 6th, 2011 Shakir M. Lakhani Topic: Senate Reform Do you feel your government is fair? Does it manage the issues properly, with careful thought, and an open, objective mind? Is it effective? Do you feel that the Senate is a sober chamber of second thought? Do you feel that the best interests of the Canadian public are always preserved in the current model of our governance? If so, you re mistaken. Under our present governance, we have two houses, the House of Commons, and the Senate, the reform to the latter being the main topic of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In terms of the reform option, as a country, we absolutely cannot afford to abolish the Senate, as it serves as, and is meant to be, a body of un biased economic and social élite , who are capable of making/approving decisions to benefit the citizens of Canada, rather than the House of Commons, which makes decisions by majority, and in their own interest. The Senate is meant to play a neutral role, to be the final judge to make the un biased, informed decisions. Sometimes, the Senate has taken on other roles, which it performs and works with very effectively. In fairness to them, these often do not receive much media coverage, increasing the public perception that Senators do very little. For example, the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science, and Tech released a report on the Health Care system, a month before the Romanow Report on Human Health Resources Planning. They have also researched issues such as poverty in Canada, and legalizing Marijuana. No matter which angle one looks at this from, the effective existence of the Senate is necessary to stabilize the government, as it is near to impossible to have an ideal House of Commons, as confirmed by an English political journalist Walter Bagehot. He wrote about the British parliamentary System (which our system is based off), and was quoted saying, If we had an ideal House of Commons...

Drew , is a place where African American boys are taught to lead and are usually in their school choir. In this play, the protagonist, Pharus Jonathan Young, is a young African American boy who struggles with his sexuality as well as the treatment he receives for being more effeminate than his fellow classmates. However, there is the fact that as Pharus sings at the very beginning of the play, there are homophobic slurs being thrown his way, demonstrating the hostile environment that he would most likely be facing at his school, not just because he is gay, but also because of the faith that those boys had as well as the stereotyping of black males masculinity. As the play goes on, Pharus grows as a character and becomes more aware and more comfortable in his own skin as well as making his classmates see that just because he is a homosexual does not mean that should be treated any differently than the rest. As a matter of fact, in a portion of the play that takes place in the boy s locker room, the five young men all come out and sing Motherless Child, which in turn united the group of boys without much of an effort, except that they were finally able to see their similarities rather than their differences and in a much more soothing, calmed, and honest form of communication than the fights and constant bullying. Not only is Pharus able to overcome these obstacles, he is also able to demonstrate to his classmates, both directly and indirectly, how those stereotypes hurt him and made his peers unfriendly. Not only that, but in a way, it also represented Tarell McCraney s difficult life as a homosexual African American. Not only did the stereotypes portrayed by the characters of Tarell Alvin McCraney s demonstrate the difficulties of being different and growing up in a predominately prejudices community of African Americans. Both the external debt, as a ratio of GDP, and the public sector deficit had fallen to 36% and 1,5%, respectively. The dependence on the petroleum export was reduced and it accounted for only 29% of exports in 1991, compared to 77% in 1982. There had been a tremendous structural shift within sectors where the ownership, market shares and responsibility between the government and the private sector became more evenly distributed. The government was highly involved in public utilities, petroleum, banking and some manufacturing industries, while the private sector dominated the remaining areas (especially manufacturing, mining, commerce, entertainment and service industries). The main economic goals of the Mexican government in 1991 were to lower inflation, modernize the economy and improve the standard of living for the poorest inhabitants. In order to control the inflation, that had spiked to over 159% in 1987 (www.banxico.org.mx), the government introduced several new policies: 1) reduce the fiscal deficit and the public sectors internal debt, 2) control aggregate demand, 3) temper real wage increases, 4) limit price increases, and 5) sterilize capital inflows. The Problem Of Chronic Homelessness According to suitcaseclinic.org homelessness is a temporary condition that people fall into when they cannot afford to pay for a place to live, or when their current home has been declared unsafe or even unstable. According to Habitat.org, this issue affects between 1.6 million to close to 3 million people within the United States. The issue is growing throughout the world, but what is the root cause? Many people wonder how they can help. Most tend to believe that the solution is as simple as just giving them money to use for daily living. Even though their root cause for their issue isn t money. It is the fact that they either don t know how to use their money properly/ responsibly. The main causes of chronic homelessness include poverty, disability, mental illness, along with substance abuse or addiction. Poverty is a hard but doable cycle to break and becomes more and more difficult to get out once you start to fall behind a specific income level. Once people reach that point they then usually are not able to obtain the proper resources for the acquired knowledge and resources that are necessary for a higher paying job. Disability affects a great percentage of the homeless. This is usually caused by some injury that prevents them from working numerous jobs within their societies and without their dependable income they then fall into the poverty cycle. Effect Of The Halo Effect In the video, The Halo Effect Science of Attraction, the speakers conduct an experiment to find what impact the halo effect has on personal relationships and the way we perceive others. The Halo Effect is a type of cognitive bias in which our overall impression of a person influences how we feel and think about his or her character. The experiment consisted of two groups of women seeing two different sides of the same guy. The team will then investigate how easily we deceive ourselves. Mr. X AKA Dan provided two videos, one happy and upbeat and the other negative and downbeat. In the 90s, at Harvard University, a psychologist Nalini Ambady and her colleagues did multiple experiments comparing the ratings given to college professors by classes at the end of the semester with ratings that another group of students gave the same professors based only on three ten second silent voice clips shown prior to any actual lectures. They found that both of the groups agreed on how good or bad the professors were. Another question was brought to the table; is we re not consciously and rationally judging people, what causes us to initially like or dislike them? Daniel Kahneman a Nobel Prize winning author and psychologist believes the answer lies in the mental shortcuts we use to help us make decisions. An idea, based off a book called What You See Is All There Is, is that when the mind makes a decision it deals only in known knowns and largely ignores facts about that might make decisions more complex. For example, when we meet someone that we know very little about, we decide that we all know is what is true and ignore the new facts. The lasting effects of this belief can damage relationships with other people. While reading this article I felt that I could take on any future job interview head on. It gives the science behind first impressions and suggests advantages to help in your first impression. • 11. The Story of an Hour, by Kate Chopin Essay The Story of an Hour is a stark display of female rejection of the norms of society. This work, by Kate Chopin, begins with a woman going through the stages of grief for her husband s death. For the wife, Louise Mallard, this was an awakening of a new life. This new life is cut short as the information that led her to believe this news turns our false. Kate Chopin reveals that even the desire for love is trumped by the need for freedom and independence, through her use of precise diction and syntax, and symbolism. With respect to word choice, Chopin foreshadows the idea that it was possible that Mrs. Mallard s husband was not dead at all. From the start she describes the news as possible (79). These descriptors help the reader to understand the transition she is going through. Due to the loss of her husband, she now has room to live her life, and to do so comfortably, without the intrusion or imposition of her husband. The outside world is described as being aquiver with the new spring life (79). She also describes the feeling of freedom as creeping out of the sky (80). It is hard for Mrs. Mallard to accept the new feelings of her freedom. The feeling had to creep due to the fact that her freedom was granted on the premise of her husband s death. This feeling, however, comes out of the sky as to show the new life promised to her, but it is still hard for her to believe that she wanted this freedom more than love. This is further displayed by the use of the phrase monstrous joy (80). The juxtaposition of these words shows very well the emotional state of Louise Mallard. The joy she is feeling is something that others could call monstrous, but the prison she was in previously could never be called joyful. Most important is the repetition of the word free (80). Muttering this under her breath is a sign that she cannot believe what she is even saying. It is at this moment that she realizes that she is free and can now enjoy her life as an independent person. In resisting this new emotion Mrs. Mallard was feeling, Chopin describes her as powerless as her two white slender hands would have been (80). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The rise of capitalism throughout the period individuals to a system of evaluation that varied a little from aristocratic tradition. An individual s place in the society was determined by the type of profession one does within the society. According to Seidel Robinson, Crusoe represents a prototype of a culture, a religion and ideology (1991: 50). He is then portrayed as a true Englishman who really loved to increase the English territory and its autonomy. He is the figure of English imperialism, capitalism and more especially colonialism. According to Reinhart colonialism in terms of a history of ideas constitutes a developmental differential due to the control of one people by an alien or foreign one (2008:1). Colonialism is not limited to a specific time or place. However, in the 16th century, colonialism changed decisively because of technological developments in navigation that began to connect more remote parts of the world. Slavery was a normal part of European life in the 17th century when the novel Robinson Crusoe was written it was seen a fact rather than a moral issue. While it is not clear what the future of GLONASS will be, currently, it appears that there is resurgence in the availability of GLONASS signals and receivers that can process these signals. Despite the popularity of GPS, many users are interested in alternative systems. This is motivated, in part, by the fact that GPS is a system operated and controlled by the U.S. Department of Defense. As such, some users may want to retain a navigation capability that is not solely GPS based. Another, more technical, motivation for this is due to the fact that GPS (or any other GNSS) is a single system, and it is conceivable that a single failure can result in a denial of service to a large number of users. Multiple GNSS may provide a level of redundancy and, thus, an added degree of robustness to GNSS applications. What if he never gets to feel the passions of true love? What if he never gets to write the mountains of books that he wishes to write? What if he never gets to experience the fame that he so desires? Fear of not being able to complete our goals before we die is a fear that lurks in the dark crevices of all of our minds. We must all find a way to fight this fear. Most people do it by blocking it out completely, but not Keats. Keats confronts his fear full force by announcing it to the public. With his use of colorful figurative language, such as repetition, imagery, and personification, Keats accomplishes his goal. The reason that Keats is so successful in painting a clear picture is because he uses his imagination to write (King). By writing his poem in the form of a Shakespearean sonnet consisting of three quatrains (King), Keats, like any great artist, clearly states the point he is trying to make. I was always concerned about given tasks and people. My behavior influenced others to follow and start behaving the same way I did. A great example is the way I used to deal with my customers. I was friendly, concerned with their business and ensured that they were well taken care of. By being concerned and open minded, I completed sales and other branch needed tasks without pushing or forcing myself on someone. • 25. The Rise Of Democracy Throughout Europe Essay The Rise of Democracy in Europe The rise of democracy within Europe was vital to the importance of the individual, and was marked by a transition from the governing by one feudal lord, to the governing by an elected official. This transition brought change not only to humanistic thinking, but also enabled mankind to have basic human rights which improved life for the country s citizens. This shift of thinking to the rights of individuals was spurred by the Protestant Reformation and the creation of the social contract which enabled a perfect atmosphere for the rise of democracy within Europe. During the feudal system, military lords ruled the people with little regard for human rights. The people were used only as pawns for the wellbeing of the feudal system and were seen as such, but with the rise of an economy based on money instead of land, the feudal system began to rapidly decline. As the feudal system dwindled away, the individual rights of man increased with the rise of the market economy, which in turn propelled the spirit of democracy within the people (International Center for Peace and Development ). While money began to circulate within this new type of economy, the financial stability of the monarchs began to collapse, while the merchant class was becoming wealthy. This transition of wealth tore down the stronghold that had suppressed the population during the feudal system, and allowed the wealthy merchant power to become important political figures. ... Kennedy famously stood before congress and vowed that America would put a man on the moon within the decade. With hopes of defeating the Soviet Union in the Space Race and gaining a leg up in the Cold War, NASA funding reached its all time high in 1965 1966 when about four percent of the federal budget was devoted to exploring space. Since then however, funding dedicated to exploring space has nose dived to about one half of a percent of the federal budget (Tyson), with plans to cut that figure by an additional $260 million in 2017 (cite NASA funding cuts). Experts in the space sciences field argue that increased funding in space exploration would re ignite the American economy and return America to the scientific prominence it was once known for, while, on the other end of the spectrum, naysayers suggest that exploring space is an economic sink hole that the United States can no longer afford to deposit to given its own earth bound troubles. The biggest affect increased space exploration would have could be its change on the education landscape. In 1998, NASA scientists Adriana Ocampo, Louis Friedman, and John Logsdon explored NASA s effect on education in their article, Why Space Science and Exploration Benefit Everyone. After the children are rehabilitated, they are reintegrated into society with the hope that they will continue their lives violence free. Actual studies have been made to evaluate the process of the children after they are rehabilitated and thrown back into society. In the study, children who had killed someone increased levels in hostility, others who survived rape also had high levels of anxiety and hostility but they had shown greater confidence and prosocial attitudes. At the end of the study, the improved community acceptance lowered levels of depression and improved confidence and prosocial attitudes despite the violent past. (Betancourt, Sierra Leone s Former Child Soldiers: A Follow up Study of Psychological Adjustment and Community Reintegration ). The study showed that despite their violent ... • 33. Argumentative Essay On Political Reform The social welfare groups, who deviously serve as underground pipelines for the furtive money are considered harmless by the American public. Unknowingly, that these grossly mis designated organizations accept secret donations and use the money to sway elections in the favor of some devious donors. They do this by spending millions of dollars for campaigns, electioneering under the tag of a humanitarian welfarist that supports the principles of the welfare state, barraging the airwaves with negative political commercials and so far an inexplicable provision in U.S law seem to allow that. And when the government supervisory body actually take the action to investigate these Machiavellian dealings, typically the election is over and the sometimes ... Groups like this seem to get way every time because should the federal watchdogs dare track down an incident like that, the villains of such groups would publicize their victimization by the federal agencies and their networks in the Congress would find a way to bully the federal agencies. Net result: no change of this corrupted system and no potential election reform. Thanks to our representative democratic system, America is becoming more Oligarchic since our one person, one vote method continues to help the superrich as they continue to stealthily tilt the voting scale in their favor. This discouraging state of affairs continues to thrive all because some devious representatives also profit from it, and they are very crafty in how they shield the public view from their obscure mechanisms. • 34. 16 Years On The Street Quotes My essay is about the quote in the book: 16 years on the street and you can learn a lot but not the things you want to learn. This quote implies to Dallas Winston, who is seventeen years old. He spent three years on the wild side of New York, and he was jailed at the age of ten. That contributes to his tough personality, along with the fact that his parents don t care about him. Dallas doesn t really care about anybody except his gang who are like his family. He treats Johnny Cade a member of the gang like a son. This quote is about Dallas, because he was hardened by spending 16 years on the street. He is very calm when Ponyboy and Johnny tell him how Johnny killed a Soc, which means he has probably dealt with this kind of situation. Another reason it implies to him, because he doesn t take criticism from anybody. He also steals regularly, and he has a very long record with the police, of which he is proud about. When Dally gets angry, no one messes with him not even Darry, the unofficial leader of the gang. All these reasons point to the fact that 16 years on the street has changed Dally. ... • 36. Henderson State University Henderson State University was known as Henderson Brown College in the 1920 s. Originally founded as the Arkadelphia Methodist College in 1890, Henderson s official name was then for the second time in its history changed to Henderson Brown to honor Walter William Brown in 1911. Brown was Henderson s friend and business partner. Looking through the yearbooks of this time period one could see a college filled with arts and ambitions. At the beginning of the decade Henderson Brown had only eighteen students in its senior class, reaching a peak of only forty five seniors throughout the decade. Many buildings were featured at the beginning pages of the yearbooks, though a girl s dormitory was never pictured. This subtle sexist attitude towards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A lot of musical degrees were offered, such as piano and violin. One course that seemed to be popular, especially with women were Home Economics. Which may seem greatly sexist in this day and age, but correlated with the lifestyles back then. Another major that seemed to be common for women as well as men was science. One course that existed back than that probably would not be allowed today as a public university was a Bible studies course that seems as if was a requirement. Majors were very broad in the 20 s, with no concentration in a particular area in relation to today. Today we have different majors under an umbrella, such as under science we can have anything from a biology major to a computer engineering major. Some clubs that existed in the twenties at Henderson Brown was, domino club, French club, Spanish club, and something known as the K.K.Klub . The K.K.Klub was a club with women only but provided no additional information than the picture itself on the purpose for the club. Though closely resembling the KKK in name, it is unclear whether this organization was a club of white supremacy or not. Historically in this time period, was known to be the peak of the ... • 37. Henry Moore Seated Woman Analysis Henry Moore s Seated Woman, 1958 59 In this paper I will describe my interpretation of the sculpture through visual observation. Henry Moore is said to be the most important British sculptor of the 20th century, and the most popular and internationally celebrated sculptor of the post war period. Moore, believed that a material had its own vitality and therefore used a direct carving technique and worked on the material directly instead of molding and casting. Moore was inspired by the human body and the nature. This led him to creating abstract forms to draw analogies between the human body and landscape. (Henry Moore Biography, Art, and Analysis of Works. (n.d.). Retrieved June 21, 2016, from http://www.theartstory.org/artist moore henry.htm). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The middle of the sculptor which would be the abdomen is concaved and seems to have been carved out. The top part of the sculptor or the torso seems to be the most disproportionate. The arms of the sculptor are not well defined and one arm might even appear to be crossed over her breast while her breast seem to be full and voluptuous.
