Cowden Syndrome
A 43 year old woman presented with a one year history of abdominal pain and constipation. She
also gave a history of nodules in her mouth which biopsy showed papilloma (Figure A). In
endoscopy nodularity of the esophageal mucosa was seen in the entire length and a single nodule
was seen on the epiglottis. Coarse nodularity was seen in the stomach from cardia and fundus to
the antrum. Nodularity of the bulb and D2 was also seen and multiple polyps of different sizes
were seen in colon (Figure B) (Video 1). Biopsies was taken from these polyps and reported as
hamartomatous polyps. The patient had facial and acral lesions which biopsy confirmed
trichilemmomas and acral keratosis. Thyroid and breastsonography showed multiple benign nodules

In 1996, the susceptibility locus for Cowden syndrome was mapped to chromosome 10q22 23, and
in 1997, germline mutations in the PTEN gene (phosphatase and tensin homology, deleted on
chromosome 10) on 10q23 were first reported in families with this syndrome. Hamartomas in
Cowden syndrome affect all three germ cell layers but most commonly arise from ectodermal and
endodermal elements. Almost all patients (90% to 100%) have mucocutaneous lesions that include
trichilemmomas, acral keratoses, and oral papillomas. Breast lesions affect the majority of female
patients and include fibroadenomas, fibrocystic disease, and adenocarcinomas (25% to 50%).
Thyroid abnormalities, such as multinodular goiter and follicular adenoma, are found in one half to
two thirds of patients. Thyroid carcinoma occurs in 3% to 10% of patients. Macrocephaly,
cerebellar gangliocytoma, and genitourinary malformations are also frequent components of
Cowden syndrome. Increased risks for endometrial carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma have been
added to the operational criteria for Cowden

Computer Science Mentoring Analysis
I am currently a member of the two major honors student organizations at Miracosta college, the
Alpha Chi Lambda Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and the Honors Scholar Program. I currently
volunteer as an Advocate for the Honors Scholar Program to monitor the Honors lounge when no
staff members are present and answer any questions students may have about the program. Without
an Advocate or staff member, the lounge cannot be open so I try to be there as much as I can so
people are able to utilize the space. Additionally, I Co Founded and volunteer for the Computer

The Differences Of Racial Profiling And Iron Triangles
Imagine that you are going on a plane to some far exotic country. You get to the airport, but you
notice people staring at you and give you disgusted looks and even looks of fear, almost like you
re a monster. You are going through security you look to the left of you and you see a curtained
box, suddenly you get nervous. You know what happens in those boxes what if they pull you out
of the line and make you go in there. There is no one to help you, there is no one to help you stop
them if they do. You are completely helpless. This is what it felt like going to the airport when I
was 12. Racial profilingis meant to serve a good purpose but there are other more accurate ways of
getting the same result without discriminating against an entire group of people. Iron triangles
are meant to help the public effectively communicate and participate more in their government
but the drawback of this method is that sometimes the iron triangle will begin to only care about
its components and not the public it is meant to serve. In this essay, I will explain what
happened to Shoshanna and how she was racially profiled on a plane. Then I will compare how
racial profiling and iron triangles are alike. Lastly, I will explain how iron triangles have the
power to change or institute policies and how that power can be used to end racial profiling.
Shoshanna was a 36 year old American citizen. On September 11, 2011, she and two men who
were sitting beside her were forced out of the plane

Victorian Period
Romantic period analysis
The beauty of nature and its ability to set you free, the powers of imagination, individuality and a
rebellion to tyranny are some of the ideas the romantic period brought to society s attention. While
rejecting neoclassical views of order, reason, tradition, society and formal diction. Romanticism
allowed people to get away from the constrained rational views of life and concentrate on an
emotional and sentimental side of humanity. The definition of poetry by William Wordsworth
, (an
important poet of the romantic period) exemplifies the importance of emotion and the individual,
stating Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings. It was the publication of a
collection of poems by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Romantic escapism is an extremely important element of John Keats poetry, serving as a
foundation for many of his poems. In the ode to a Nightingale he is pouring out his thoughts and
is longing for escape from the world full of strife, sadness and grief.
The recurrence of this theme in his poems is actually not only a part of romanticism, but also
greatly a result of his personal unfortunate experiences in life. This painful experience in life is
what makes him somewhat pessimistic and compels him to resort to the option of escapism
through his poetry ( KEATS PROJECTION OF ROMANTIC ESCAPISM ).
The poem Ode to a nightingale begins with the narrator saying he feels a drowsy numbness but
the feeling is not from jealousy of the nightingale s happiness because the narrator rejoices in the
song. While listening to and appreciating the sweetly sung song of the nightingale, Keats too,
wishes to become like her so that he can fly away from the cruel world that has given him
nothing else but pain. That I might drink, and leave the world unseen, and with thee fade away
into the forest dim. (Keats 1006) Through the use of the nightingale, a very real living creature in
nature, Keats has provided us with both a real bird and a symbol of the immortality that is nature.
Nature, in its never ending cycle of life and death, achieves its own kind of immortality. This is
something that men will never achieve. The bird is

The Real Slumdogs
The video The Real Slumdogs show us many different aspects of the culture residing in Dharavi.
There are several different types of statuses that people can achieve from a sociological stand
point, but the one I am referring to in the video is achieved statuses. An achieved status is a
position that is earned, accomplished, or involves at least some effort or activity on the
individual s part. Take the story of Babu, the hard working trash picker for instance. This trash
picker has worked most of his life as a trash picker, and through this dedication he has finally
become his own boss. Although he is still picking trash, he oversees other workers and helps them
learn the trade. If he had not worked tirelessly and put in this effort to get... Show more content on

I find myself looking at this trying to, as the sociological term goes, take the role of the other .
Taking the role of the other is defined as putting yourself in someone elses shoes; understanding
how someone else feels and thinks, so you anticipate how that person will act. If I were to look at
Lakshmi for instance, I see that she works in terrible conditions with her family, and that she
cares very much for her daughter, Sheetal. I see that she doesn t like the conditions in which her
family, or any family in Dharavi for that matter, lives. This has made her provide an education
for her daughter, even though it is costly to her own salary. Since she knows how tough it can be
to make a living in Dharavi, she has helped with a program called Project Acorn. This helps
provide services to other slum dwellers and their children to get an education. She is a very
caring person, and wants to see the people of Dharavi get into better living conditions so they
aren t suffering or not getting anywhere. Shailesh cares for his family, and wants them to have
the best life they can. While he wants this, he also wants to pursue his own dreams as a
Bollywood actor. He wants to become a star and this makes him use a good bit of his monthly
earnings to take acting classes. He is a very driven individual, and his efforts have finally gotten
him a foothold in the film industry, as a background dancer in a music

Porphyria s Lover Essay
Captured Moments in the Victorian Age While much of the Victorian Era centers around the rigid
constructs of society, some authors and artists pull away from the strict rules and realism. Claude
Monet, the French painter was a major contributor to the Impressionist Movement and his 1873
Impression, Sunrise is an oil painting on canvas that depicts a gloomy dawn over a harbor in the
new style. The British poet, Robert Browning is known for his dramatic monologues, one of which
is Porphyria s Lover , written in 1834. The poetic style allows for the character to speak straight to
the audience. Both forms of art deviate from traditional Victorian values, capturing feelings and
personality, rather than morality and truth. In the painting, Impression,... Show more content on

Monet s technique was a method of painting which didn t find favor with the establishment, though,
who considered it primitive and vulgar ( Monet: The Impressionists ). His reaction to being rejected
by salons was to form a company of artists that created their own exhibition. It was at their first
exhibition that Impression, Sunrise was shown and the term Impressionism would be coined. As the
originally contemptuous name suggests, it was as much Monet s title as his picture that
antagonised the public and the press (Wilmer). In an era that valued solid truth, Impressionism
was a rebellion. Browning was similarly rejected. His readers declared it was, impossible to
make sense of his poetry, they said, he must have gone mad, he was unreadable (Everett). The
Victorian writers are known for presenting a clear moral or message in each work; a piece must
have purpose. However, in Browning s work, the readers are required to evaluate and infer a
meaning for themselves. Any sane reader can determine that the closing lines of the Porphyria s
Lover : And thus we sit together now,/And all night long we have not stirred,/And yet God has
not said a word (Browning lines 58 60) do not reflect a moral that society should follow. There is no
voice of the poet for the reader to turn to for an

Analysis Of The Poem The Duchess
Chaucer s Book of the Duchess has been widely debated as to when it was written as this
influences the interpretation of which historical figures were fashioned after characters in the
poem. The poem was written as a memorial for the death of Duchess Blanche of Lancaster, whose
husband John of Gaunt was a patron of Chaucer s. Knowing the date that Chaucer wrote this poem
affects the way in which readers and audience at the time interpreted the poem. The initial response
is to read the Black Knight figure as John of Gaunt, because the character is lamenting the loss of
his love that is named Lady White in the poem. The French translation of White is Blanche,
which makes it evident that the poem is a type of tribute for her death. Therefore the poem can
be interpreted as the love between John of Gaunt and Duchess Blanche, as well as his grief for
her now that she has passed. The narrator is interpreted to be Chaucer, as his status in the poem
appears to be lower than the Black Knight, and the narrator himself is dealing with a grief of his
own though it does not explicitly say whom he mourns. Chaucer has carefully woven historical
context through The Book of the Duchess by subtly inferring real medieval figures with
characters in the poem, as well as the many classical and medieval figures from prominent Greek
and Roman Myths, as well as Greek philosophers and academics. Chaucer uses the death of
Duchess Blanche as a reason to write The Book of the Duchess as a means to appeal

The Disaster Of Nuclear Reactors
An earthquake centered 130 km off shore of the city of Sendai in Miyagi caused 11 nuclear
reactors that were operating at 4 different nuclear plants to shut down on March 11,
2011(Fukushima Accident, 2015). The earthquake had a magnitude of 9.0, which is classified as
one of the worst earthquakes/ greatest earthquakes on the earthquake scale, the tsunami following
the earthquake was about 560 sq km resulting in over 19,000 human deaths. The earthquake and
tsunami caused the following nuclear units to shut down, Tokyo Electric Power Company s
(Tepco) Fukushima Daiichi 1, 2, 3, and Fukushima Daini 1, 2, 3, 4, Tohoku s Onagawa 1, 2, 3, and
Japco s Tokai, total 9377 MWe net (ibid).
Nuclear plants create energy through radioactive substances that help the creation of energy.
Substances can become radioactive because the nucleus of each atom is unstable and can decay
giving off nuclear radiation in the form of alpha particles, beta particles or gamma rays (What is
Radioactivity, n.d.). Most power reactors use water as a coolant, in light water reactors, the core is
surrounded by the coolant under pressure. The nuclear fuel contains uranium that contains 2 to 4
percent uranium 235. For fuel rods the uranium is changed to uranium dioxide (Nuclear Energy,
n.d.). Heat is created by the uranium 235 atoms splitting which is called fission then steam is made
which spins a turbine to drive a generator and produces electricity, this is a nuclear reaction.

Indian Ocean Basin Trade
Changes and Continuities of Indian Ocean Trade The Indian Ocean Basin trade was the most
significant trade after the collapse of the Mongols and the Silk Road. During the period circa 600
to 1450 CE the Indian Ocean Basin trade developed into the most important exchange of products
and ideas in the world. During the period the area had numerous technological and religious
developments, however the trade itself didn t change during this time as far as geography and
policies of trade.
To begin there were many changes during the eight hundred fifty years following 600 CE. In the
beginning Buddhism was reaching its height as a trade route religion but Islam began to surpass it

The trade of gold, ivory, gems, silver, and manufactured goods made this trade lucrative for
Portugal. The profit margin were so large that it was worth it to conquer the territory and ship it

Because of the lack of a navy and policy controlling the trade Portugal was not only able to insert
itself into the trade but it was also able to take up glorified piracy in order to increase its already
sizable profits. Because of the continuities of the trade that allowed it to go on for more than eight
centuries it was also destroyed by the Portuguese.
In conclusion, the Indian Ocean was the definitive trading zone of the world from the early to mid
1000 s. It continuously evolved from 600 to 1450 CE. Despite keeping the same framework the
trade had numerous religious changes and technological improvements during the period that made

Jewish Christian Relations Essay
While we speak about the tenuous relationship between Christians and Jews dating back to the time
of Christ, the seeds for the schism within Judaism may have been planted more than 500 years
prior. Jeremiah was one of a group of distinguished prophets whose works became part of the Old
Testament canon. The Jewish quot;wisdom quot; prophetslectured, warned and blamed all who
would listen about the sins of their own people, the resulting punishments that God had prescribed
for them, and what they had to do to get back into God s good graces.
Some prophets targeted Jewish monarchs as an idolatrous distraction which prevented the people

quot; The Old Israel along with its Old Testament...had been succeeded, fulfilled, completed,
replaced, and/or displaced by the New Israel, the New Testament, the ChristianChurch, the new
people of God, quot; said Rabbi A. James Rudin about the Christian attitude during the formative
years of the Church (Fisher, Rudin, Tannebaum 9).
Sensitivity relating to the perceived expiration of the first Mosaic covenant has brought forth a
minor controversy in recent decades about the political correctness of referring to the Old
Testament as being quot;old. quot; Some Catholic Scripture professors express a preference for
quot;Hebrew Scriptures, quot; while others apologetically retain the old reference to prevent
confusion. (Pazcuzzi 2/97). The issue of Judaism having been superceded by Christianity will be
addressed at various points in this paper.
In addition to the writings of Jeremiah, other Old Testament works written in the centuries prior to
the birth Christ pointed to the coming of a messiah to save the Jewish people from their
continuing history of enslavement, persecution, and dislocation. Some Jews waited for a David
like king to rescue them. Others felt that Jesus Christ who had suffered for the sins of his people,
the one who had endured and conquered death was the true messiah. Whether the messiah had
come or the messiah was still yet to come was the key issue between the Jews who remained Jews
during the first and succeeding centuries versus those who

Jewish Mysticism
During the Middle ages, a period of time lasting from the 5th to the 15th century, arose a strong
figurehead and Jewish philosopher by the name Moshe ben Maimon. An expert on Jewish
scripture and Talmud, he took on writing detailed responses to questions raised by Jews on the
topics of Jewish Law and interpretations of the scriptures. Maimonides made it his purpose to make
God and the Jewish faith the basis of knowledge for his Jewish followers understanding and to
provide summaries and interpretations of Rabbinic text, scriptures and the Torah. Despite
Maimonides being an influential figure for Jewish theology, Jewish mysticism has taken a more
dramatic stance on the Torah and its teachings. Jewish mysticism holds strong in the attitude towards

Mirroring mysticism, Maimonides saw God as transcendent, being completely unique as He is
responsible for the existence of the world. Yet where Maimonides differs from mysticism is in his
belief that the only way to know God is to know God s actions, and the only way to know God s
actions is to study physics. The separation between the two theologies stems from metaphysics.
According to Maimonides thought, our religious commandment is to study physics. The purpose of
our existence is to perfect the image of God that we are created in, that is our rational soul, where
our rational soul is life. The merging of philosophy, theology and physics compelled Maimonides to
write the thirteen fundamental principles of the Jewish faith. In these fundamentals highlight the
existence of the Creator in his absolute and unparalleled perfection and eternity as well as how God
communicated to man through prophecy. Prophets were seen to possess intellectual perfection
where the sole difference between a philosopher and prophet was the language transmittable to the
commons. The intellectual difference allowed those fortunate enough to pursue further into the
understanding that the 611 commandments are a program that Moses created in order to create a

Disney Princess And Gender Stereotypes
She was intensely sympathetic. She was immensely charming. She was utterly unselfish. She

thousands of decades, women have faced the stereotype that they must be family orientated and
give up selflessly for the other gender, regardless of how they feel. The conventional image of ideal
womencan also be seen in children s media Disney princesses, for example. How does this image of

According to Young Eisendrath, women s deepest desire is for sovereignty over our own lives,
the right and responsibility to act with free will to be the Subjects of our own desires. This is
true of all human beings, no matter their condition (2000, 29). Therefore, the Disney princess
also can play a vital role in making us realize what a woman should be as one human being. The
third generation of Disney princesses emphasize the importance of personality and diversity.
Also, in their 2012 Disney princess commercial, I am a princess, girls use adjectives such as
courageous , brave and strong , as well as kind , which suggests that the Walt Disney Company is
promoting children s identification with the image of princesses (Lopreore 2016, 13). The new
image of princesses, portrayed as being more independent and being the subject of their desires,
whereas women had previously struggled to get this recognition, will give children a new

Ecotourism is one of fast growing sectors in tourism industry. It is defined as responsible travel to
natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains the well being of local people. by the

Overview
Cunard Line Ltd. is a cruise line that represents luxury and class providing four to five star cruise
ship options. Their overall target market is mature adults with mid to very high income levels. A lot
of the marketing efforts put forth by Cunard were going towards tactical efforts and the promotion
of individual ships as opposed to the promotion of the entire brand. Although most of the ads

This method can be used for customers of the four or five star ships. This loyalty program would
provide occasional direct offers to customers who already have experience with Cunard and
therefore will not view the deals as a lowering of standards. An example of a deal that can be
provided is a selling package that is good for a year or two. This package would outline a
discounted price for a set amount of people to travel on a certain cruise ship. That way, there is
enough time for a customer to realistically plan out a trip while providing an incentive for them
and encourage more action as opposed to a regular priced ad.
Lastly, an alternative that can be taken is to build relationships with various large companies with
employees who make an income in the target range and make offers to company executives. This
method would not downplay the company image because Cunard would be communicating directly
with high income executives and furthermore will not be making any public sales or
advertisements. This method would create new potential customers who are directly in the target
market of choice using the method of relationship building. This may also result in additional
customer retention. This method can be used for both the four and five star ships. In order to
attract the target market of the five star ships, Cunard can make an arrangement with a company to
offer a deal with their luxury ships as part of a retirement plan.

When him and his partner, Lando Calrissian, get reassigned to the anti terrorist squad, they learn
of the ruthless terrorist Wulfgar (Rutger Hauer), who has made his way to New York after
having done a little too much violence in London. In somewhat of a big coincidence, XXX is
able to figure out what Wulfgar looks like and tracks him down to a nightclub. A pretty intense
chase scene takes place and now Rutger s identity is compromised. What is a terrorist supposed to
do then? Why, hijack a tramcar full of UN delegates, of course.
Nighthawks burns slow and isn t as over the top in action as one would think. It takes it s time to
establish Rutger Hauer as a ruthless killer, with hardly a conscience. Rutger is phenomenal in this
movie and it s easy to see why action star Stallone would have been jealous of him.
The original cut of Nighthawks was much more violent and featured more scenes of Rutger s
character, but after some behind the scenes trimming, the final result was a nearly bloodless
action flick, that still keeps the viewer interested. It s interesting to know that one of the main
reasons for director XXX getting let go from the film was Stallone s refusal to let a woman be
discussed as another woman in the flick. Instead, Stallone said he wanted to do it, which gave us
this wonderful image to burn into our brains

Similarities Between Delany And Ursula Le Guin
Science fiction has evolved from simple ideas to the most imaginative creations, it has been
predominantly managed by closed minded people. This has led to authors of science fiction to
follow a set of norms while writing. These norms include advanced technology, male heroes, and
white male authors. The idea of a character being placed in a distant future and the use of advanced
technology is a common theme used. Samuel Delany and Ursula Le Guin are two contrasting
authors that discuss oppression of minorities in their work in similar and distinct ways. Diversity in
science fictionprovides an outlet for authors like Delany and Le Guin to provide the reader with an
understanding of the cultural influence of minority groups, empathy towards... Show more content

Women have been portrayed as fragile creatures and men as muscular beings in science fiction. Le
Guin alludes to sexism in her work The Dispossessed through the world building of her novel.
Anarres is a planet where citizens are all equal to each other no one owns property or has more

equality and harmony. All citizens are required to work in order to contribute to everyone s well

dependence on capitalism. In contrast, the planet of Urras is highly capitalistic and ruled by a

same knowledge that the men pose. Shevek first encounters this when he talks with Vea is an

of what equality is and what it is not. Anarres is what a perfect world would be harmony

In Dubious Battle Character Analysis
Motivated purely by self interest, Mac the principal organizer, admits from the very beginning that
the situation is hopelessly stacked against the strikers because the growers are unusually well
organized and have commanding resources at their disposal. Despite this fact he is willing to risk
lives in pursuit of what he deems a greater cause. This inherent selfishness breeds the greed and
inhumanity that Steinbeck is so keen to expose in his novel, In Dubious Battle. Mac shows his true,
selfish and greedy self when he takes advantage of situations as a chance for his own gain: to
further his cause, manipulate the strikers emotions, steam up the crowd, and gain the public s
sympathy.

Mac marvels constantly at how well organized the Torgas Valley powers are, with power
distributed into three tight fisted hands (89). But aside from this, Mac shows his skills at
manipulating the public in order to get what he needs. He s not really concerned about getting
justice for Anderson; he just needs a place for his men to stay.
Mac displays his legitimate and egocentric self when Mac uses the death of his friend, Joy, to
sway the emotions of the men in the camp. Doc Burton cannot believe this; however, Mac
explains that s the way it is (160). Mac goes on further claiming that Joy would have loved being
used to manipulate the emotions of the strikers and the public, because it s work he believed in.
Mac mounts the platform, positions Jim s body in full view of the crowd, and then begins his
eulogy to rouse the troops to battle. Mac s belief that there s no such thing as personal feelings, as
well as his idea that this is what Jim would ve wanted, makes it hard to escape the disgusting
feeling that Mac has no sense of sympathy or humanity (160).
Mac reveals his authentic and grasping self when he makes the plan to escape once things go south.

Beauty Vs American Beauty Standards Essay
Society s ideals of beauty differs throughout the world. The American and South Korean
standards of beauty are vastly different which is interesting to compare. I was intrigued by this
topic because of many Korean shows that I watch and I ve realized a major difference in fashion
and beauty between these two cultures. American and South Koreans follow different trends, and
undergo plastic surgeries but they are often influenced by the same source which is the media. In
America, it is considered beautiful to have a sun kissed skin tone. People frequently get spray
tans or apply bronzer because being tan is often associated with having fun at the beach or at
vacation (Lin, 2017). In terms of makeup, Americans tend to create more dramatic looks by
applying false lashes and doing heavy contouring and highlighting. In recent years, Americans
developed an obsession over fuller lips and bigger breasts and butts due to the media. Plastic surgery
is very prominent, however, it is mostly used for breastaugmentation, buttock augmentation,

What Is The Frontier Hero In James Fenimore Cooper s Last...
The key traits of the frontier hero are simple, the frontier hero, represented by Hawkeye in James
Fenimore Cooper s Last of the Mohicans, is characterised by his ability to exist both in the realm of
nature and civilization, thus allowing him to master the wilderness and expand the frontier further,
creating America. In James Fenimore Coopers version of the frontier hero, the element of race is
important and highlight exactly what Cooper believes a hero should be. In Cooper s literary reality
race dictates the opportunities and abilities of each of his characters, to firmly establish where these
traits originate and their place within civilization. On the lower end of the civilized spectrum is the
indigenous people that exist within the novel. Cooper provides the reader with ample description
of the Indian through Uncas and his father, who are characterised by Cooper to be the noble
savages. They are unable to participate within white settler society, but do possess a deep
understanding of the wilderness. Cooper regularly emphasizes their savage appearance that has an
air of neglect , but also characterizes them as individuals who can move noiselessly through the
wilderness, like they are a part of that uncivilized world (24). This characterization is contrasted
with the representation of the other end of the civilization spectrum Major Duncan Heyward.

The Between 1879 And 1980
Throughout the period between 1879 and 1980 the relationships between the powers changed
greatly in their nature, coinciding with a shift in the balance of power. The Entente Cordiale of
1904 can certainly be seen as a key turning point, along with other factors such as Neville
Chamberlain s policy of appeasement, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the SALT I and II
agreements. The signing of the Entente Cordiale in 1904 epitomised the ever growing division on
the European stage in the early 1900s, and certainly contributed to a pre war alliance which
precipitated the outbreak of World War One. At the time, the highly unlikely signing of an Anglo
French agreement can be seen by Gavin as a, construct as an affront towards Germany . However,
from the point of German interests, they had no objections to the treaty and had no reason to
suppose that the alliance was directed against any one power. The period of Britain s largely
mythical splendid isolation , formally ending by the 1902 Anglo Japanese Alliance, Britain began to
expand its relations with European countries. The signing of the Entente Cordiale can certainly
suggest that Germany ought to be concerned, and is certainly significant when determining any
alteration in the relationships of the powers and shift in the balance of power. A way in which the
Entente Cordiale was significant was that it was firstly tested in the 1905 Morocco Crisis, only 13
months within the signing of the cordiale, suggests German objection

Commercial ads can give a very positive appeal, or even a negative one, being a widespread topic

How Did The Indians Culture Affect The Lakota Culture
The Lakota Indians had the sad and unfortunate luck of becoming personally acquainted with the
westward thrust of American development when the Americans attitudes toward Indians had grown
cynical and cruel. This interaction caused the Lakota culture to change a great deal during the
nineteenth century. Horses and guns brought about a dramatic change in the Lakota s culture. They
enabled them to seize and defend their rich hunting grounds, to follow the great migrating herds of
buffalo that shaped their distinctive way of life, and by the middle of the nineteenth century to

Charles The Lamb Analysis
In the two illuminations, a unity of appearance and attributes links Charles to the Lamb and sets in
parallel the ways in which the earthly and heavenly rulers are honored. On facing pages, the
Carolingian illuminators depicted parallel terrestrial and celestial ceremonies of the aurum
coronarium. Just as Christ receives tribute in his heavenly court, so his terrestrial counterpart and
reflection, Charles the Bald, receives homage in his earthly reign. The Lamb is in the dome of
heaven; the king is under the baldachin s dome symbolizing heaven. Christ s exaltation in heaven
is set against Charles imperial exaltation. This parallelism between terrestrial and heavenly rulers
had been portrayed earlier in the diptych of Charles s Prayerbook (Figs. 6 7) and in the gable
ivories of the Throne of Peter (Fig. 4). As Robert Deshman demonstrated, both the diptych and the
ivories imply a concept of imitatio Christi (imitation of Christ) that exalts the ruler in his temporal
office and likens him to Christ.
In the Codex Aureus, the theme of Christ s triumph and exaltation has implications for the meaning
of the exalted king represented on the opposite page. Charles s portrait as Christomimetes (imitator
of Christ) not only enhances his status and authority among humans but it also conveys divine
inspiration. The Carolingian king is to be considered the divinely appointed ruler on earth and the
features of his portrait the baldachin and the hand of God support this image. The

Delano s Genius In Benito Cereno, By Herman Melville
Adam Mandel 6 October 2014 L204 Delano s Genius The story of Benito Cereno is written by
Herman Melville, yet is narrated by the captain of the Bachelor s Delight, Amasa Delano. By
using an in story narrator, Melville seems to divorce himself from the action, and any opinions he
may have about the characters. The reader is forced to watch the events unfold through the eyes
of Delano, and this deceives the audience into thinking Delano is a senseless, aloof sailor.
However, Melville actually believes Delano to be a genius and uses his multiple narrator
storytelling style to hide this from the audience. Many might argue that Captain Delano was not a
bright man. He did not jump on the strange occurrences on the Bachelor s Delight, and Babo
fooled him on more than one occasion. However, Delano did notice the strange happenings: At this
moment the young sailor s eye was again fixed on the whisperers, and Captain Delano thought he
observed a lurking significance in it, as if silent signs of some Freemason sort had that instant been
interchanged (Melville 54).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Prejudice And Ethnic Cleansing
Prejudice: a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Ethnic
Cleansing: an extreme version of acting on prejudices by the mass expulsion or killing of
members of an unwanted ethnic or religious group in a society. These two phrases have the power

Thus, residents of the US cannot express the ideology of its always them, not us from the small

Viral replication in the spinal cord is what leads to muscle paralysis and poliomyelitis
(Racaniello, 2005). Old world monkeys and chimpanzees can be experimentally infected, and
humans are the natural hosts for poliovirus, because these species have suitable environments
and receptors for the survival of poliovirus, but other species such as mice do not have suitable
environments for poliovirus unless the mice have been experimentally altered to express CD155
(Racaniello, 2005). Some strains of the poliovirus have been able to replicate in mice due to a
process of adaptation, and some strains of the virus are naturally virulent in the mice (Racaniello,
2005). Scientists were able to substitute a six amino acid sequence of the P1/Mahoney strain,
which is in the VP1 capsid protein and located near the CD155 binding site, with the
corresponding sequence in P2/Lansing strain (Racaniello, 2005). This caused the mice to have
neurovirulence to the poliovirus (Racaniello, 2005). In humans, they have taken samples of
tonsillopharyngeal tissue, the wall of the ileum and mesenteric lymph nodes and been able to
isolate poliovirus from each of the samples, but even with the removal of the tonsils and adenoids

The Innate Immune System
In the initial phase of an infection, the innate immune system generates a rapid inflammatory
response that blocks the growth and dissemination of the infectious agent. This response is
followed, in vertebrates, by the development of an acquired immune response in which highly
specific B and T cell receptors recognize the pathogen and induce responses that lead to its
elimination (Janeway, Jr. et al., 2002). The antigen receptors of the acquired immune systemare well
characterized. They consist of many structurally similar molecules with different binding

Consciousness In The German Ideology
Before one is able to consider this quote, the concept of materialism and consciousness must be
dissected. According to Marx, materialism is not only the way people s beliefs are conditioned by
material activities, but also the fact that people s ideologies are conditioned by history and the
powers of production. Consciousness plays a large role in his definition of materialism, because
they are inherently connected. For example, The production of ideas, of conceptions, of
consciousness is directly interwoven with the material activity and the material relationships of
men; it is the language of actual life (Marx, 111). Marx also defines consciousness as an economic
process; in other words, economic determinism defines consciousness and even history itself. This
differs greatly from Hegel s idea that consciousness is a process called the dialectic, which includes
distinguishing between thesis and antithesis in order to come to a conclusion. Although Marx
utilizes the dialectic to analyze materialism and consciousness in The German Ideology, he goes
even further than Hegel and uses this dialectic thinking to challenge Hegel s own concepts. It is
important to understand the concept that the process of thinking is actually a reflection of the
external world through consciousness, because then one can connect the idea that it is more of a
relationship than an externalized object. Marx explains this notion when he states, In the social
production of their existence, men

What Are the Main Problems Associated with Using Plastic...
Module code: FC 5012T
Title: Skills for Study 1
Assignment question:
What are the main problems associated with using plastic bags? Identify solutions to reduce these
problems.
Word count: 742
Tutor name: Bird, Marianne
City University Number: 110065767
Submission Date: 26/10/2011
Plastic bags have been used on a daily basis since 1977 (Williamson, 2003) as a means of
carrying items such as groceries as they are not only convenient but also cheap. However, the
over use of plastic bags has posed significant threats to the environment in recent times as they are
non biodegradable and also a threat to wildlife. The primary reason for this concern is that plastics
bags are not re used, but simply disposed of in landfills. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each year there is an increase in demands for plastic bags, and therefore more are shipped, creating
further environmental pollution concerns. This increase in demand has lead to the phenomenal
upsurge in the use and misuse of plastic bags globally, both in developed and developing
countries. Statistics show that 4 to 5 trillion plastic bags are produced per annum, whereby North
America and Western Europe account for nearly 80% (Geographical, 2005; Reusable Bags, 2005).
Cheeseman (2007) states that approximately 380 billion plastic shopping bags are used in the
United States annually ; in turn, only 0.6% of this is recycled.
Almost 96% of plastic bags are disposed of in landfills (Williamson, 2003). This leads up to another
problem as plastic bags are non biodegradable in other words, plastic bags do not biodegrade for
over a thousand years (Stevens 2001). Plastic bags may also land in farms and in oceans which
have an impact on the wildlife. Livestock such as cows may eat plastic bags while grazing. These
pose a threat if ingested as they may tangle in their stomachs, causing serious injuries and
potentially death (Dreyer et al, 1999; Rasmussen 1999). Each year over a billion birds and
mammals die due to the ingestion of plastic bags (Baker, 2002).
Many of these issues however, can be addressed and even resolved in several ways. Nowadays, a
number of countries have begun to impose taxes on plastic bag consumption, with few even
banning the use of plastic

Appreciation from Son to Mother in Tupac Shakur s Song,...
Throughout the emotional lyrics of Tupac Shakur s song Dear Mama , he constantly reveals trial
and tribulation. Shakur sympathetically expresses the obstacles he endures due to the undying
support of his mother who displays sacrificial love. He explains the abnormal circumstances in
which his family undergoes such as poverty, single parenting, and even feelings of hopelessness.
Shakur characterizes his mother as a heroic figure, who outshines the negative aspects of his life by
providing the essentials only a mother could both physically and morally instill in her child. The
artist brilliantly captivates his audience by revealing personal information from his childhood in
which many can relate to. Tupac Shakuramong very few... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a great distinction between the young man s unappreciative demeanor in Shirley Caesar s
song No Charge and Shakur s honorable acknowledgement in his song Dear Mama .
From beginning to end, Shakur lyrically unfolds sincere gratitude toward his mother. In fact, in
the very first line he strongly emphasizes You are appreciated , highlighting the theme
appreciation . The artist repetitively quotes this line throughout the song to effectively remind
his listeners of his gratefulness to have a valuable mother. In the first verse of the song, Shakur
informs the audience of a pessimistic aspect of his life, where he is thrown out of the house. Yet,
he still yearns to see his mother and shows a nostalgic attitude toward the situation. Despite the
fact that his mother is a crack addict Shakur portrays her as a black queen , displaying great
esteem for what she means to him as her son. Sung by an anonymous voice, the chorus itself
relatively personifies the appreciation he has towards his mother. In the second verse the artist
expresses feelings of enmity towards his father who was not there for him. This allows me as a
listener to conclude that Shakur s mother had to play the role of both a mother and father which
further elevates a higher appreciation for his love towards her. Evidently, he demonstrates his
gratefulness by giving her a diamond necklace which symbolizes great worth. Shakur indicates that
she is not only a parent but also a loyal

Success Is Within The Individual Mind And Expectations
Success
Success is within the individual mind and expectations. The definition of success differs from
just one person s interpretation of what success means. A large block of life is spent working to
become successful: acquiring an education, being able to take care of family, achieving a life s
ambition, or making money. People are told throughout childhood to work hard so they can grow
up and make lots of money. Everyone aspires to be successful at whatever we are doing: starting a
new business, repairing the car, writing a term paper or practicing basketball. Every bit our efforts
are directed at achieving success. Success is not the end; it is the journey we take and there is no
right or wrong idea of success.
Money is the primary concern for some people and the main ingredient for anyone who is trying to
succeed in life. For this type of person, achieving success starts with going to a good college to
compete in a competitive job market and to prepare people to take on the world. People work
hard to make money so they can satisfy their desires. People dream about owning a home and take
pride in what they possess. Some need to appear successful in order to feel successful. These
people feel accomplished when they can admire what their hard work has given them.
For some, happiness is all that matters. Happiness is achieved in many ways, and it does not
always involve money. A person can feel successful without a lot of money, at all. For example,
feeling loved is

Nat Hocken
Synopsis The story begins on the third day of December, after the wind changed overnight and
brought winter with it. Nat Hocken, the protagonist, who because of a war time disability, had a
pension and did not work full time at the farm (Maurier 1). Nat used to watch the birds on the
cliff s edge during midday. But that fall, he had noticed something different in the birds; there
were more birds than usual and they were restless, maybe because they sensed that the winter was
going to be a hard one. That night, Nat hears a tapping on the window and goes to inquire, and a
bird tries to get inside grazing his knuckles in the process but flies away soon. Sometime later, the
tapping starts again, but this time more insistent. He goes to the window to check for a second time

the plane crashes out into the sea. The birds break in in one of the bedrooms and heaps of

birds attack when the tides turn. As the tapping and the rasping sounds at the window ceases, the
family goes to the farm for supplies. The land birds do not attack, but sit on the trees, waiting and
watching. At the farm, Nat finds the dead bodies of Jim, Mr. and Mrs. Trigg. He collects food,
fuel and all the necessities and leaves for his house with his family. He starts working on the doors,
windows and the chimney preparing for the next attack. When he looks out to the sea, he realizes
that the tide has turned again and the gulls have started rising. He barricades the door and goes
inside the kitchen. The attack starts again and the story ends with Nat smoking his last cigarette,
throwing the empty pack in the chimney fire and watching it

How Does Chemical Weathering Affect The Formation Of Rocks
Introduction: Rocks are a natural substance composed of solid crystals of different minerals that
have been fused together into a solid lump .1 They are so common and we see them especially
along the river bed, along beaches, also when we visit historical places we notice that most of
the castles and roads are made of rocks .If we look at the photos of these objects taken long time
ago and compare them to how these objects look now we can notice that their appearances have
changed .These changes occur when rocks are exposed to the processes such as wind, water, and
biological activities .Chemical weathering is another process which may affect rocks and to

Exposure to chemical substances such as club soda, water, oxygen, carbon dioxide and acids can
alter the rocks. There are different types of chemical weathering processes such as: oxidation,
carbonation, hydrolysis and dehydration.2
Chemical weathering is much more common in locations where there is a lot of water, because
water is important to many of the chemical reactions that can take place. Club soda is a solution of
water, acid and sodium bicarbonate and is one among different chemical substances that can be
used to investigate the effect of chemical weathering in rocks.
Rocks and Stones Rocks and stones are naturally occurring solids made up of minerals. There are
three different types of rocks: igneous rocks, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Rocks are all
around us. Although we think that rocks remain the same over time, in fact rocks always change.
However, the changes happen so slowly which makes them difficult to see.3 Thus this research will
help me to answer the question how does club soda affects rocks.
Hypothesis
X1: Rocks are unstable substances that change over time.
X2: Chemical substances such as club soda may cause rocks to

The Planning Processes For The Classroom Schedule Created...
The planning processes for this unit started with our Math schedule created by the cooperating
teacher, Ms. Ross. The schedule indicated that the focus for the following week or two,
depending on student s performance, would be on the number six. Every Math lesson includes a
SmartBoard presentation as the I do and we do portion of lesson. This presentation is used and
reviewed every day as this group of student benefits from repetition based on their age group and
disabilities. The SmartBoard presentation includes twenty four slides, with the first ten slides
always being a part of our lesson. During this portion of the lesson, one slide is dedicated to one
video that highlights the $#$#$#$#1$#$#$#$# six, allowing the students to feel as they were taking
a break from learning. This group of students benefit from short periods of instruction, short
activities, and frequent breaks. As the pre and post assessments were created to focus on number
recognition, quantity discrimination, one to one correspondence and writing of the numbers, this
unit follows address the same categories. During our pre assessment, out of the fifteen students in
the classroom, eight students recognized the number six when shown the number. Only one student
was able to identify that the number six was the largest number when comparing the number six to
a smaller number. During the one to one correspondence activity eight students were able to make
the connection between the number six and a visual

Food Manufactures have Taken Over
Gone were the days when industrialization was the prime origin and a new age of economic boom
in our country. This was a period where factories were established, provision of jobs being vastly
increased for Americans, big machines and buildings built to accommodate and the exploit the
opportunity and moment at hand. Due to this sudden improvement, foodmanufactures being the
primary industry and instrumental in their clever ways; developed a way to profit by reducing
workers, encouraged unsanitary habits and unscrupulous ways which resulted as a disastrous blow
to the public. This bad habit in the food industry (primarily the meat factories) in late 1800s to
early 1900s aroused one of the most controversial novel (expose) The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, and
yet thrilling insight with details as to what was going on in the meat industry. Upton Sinclair
describes the frightful and dangerous working conditions of one meat packing facility in Chicago,
thus far these conditions were common to all facilities which led to laws that changed the bad
patterns of these manufactures. Workers with peculiar diseases in the meat factory had no
alternative, but to work in the poor condition due to the activities and establishments of production
which showed no well being for the employees and as to what they might be going through. The
rise in the economy recommended the young, old, men and women to seek for jobs in the meat
packing industrywhich had a vast employment rate.

Reflection Paper On Color Guard
Hey there! It s Monday, July 17. My sisters and I have packed and we are officially ready to
leave for Color Guard camp. We are really excited for what is in store for us over the next few
days. Last year s camp was difficult and made our guard wary of coming back for a second try,
but hopefully they ve fixed last year s issues. The guard met up at the school this morning to be
fitted for our fall costumes and we are now on our way to start day one of camp. This year
campers are sleeping in Royer Hall, and I must admit, I believe that last year s dorms were nicer,
especially considering every two rooms had their own bathroom. Other than the dorms, I admire
the intensity of this year s camp much more than last year s. The advanced group s instructor,
Rashaud, is a great teacher and I definitely believe that I will be learning and improving with him
this week. The main purpose of today was to review the fundamentals of Colorguard such as:
extensions on the left and right sides, drop spins, and a cone exercise. Using what we have
learned today, we tried out for our levels; however, he has chosen not to assign groups until
tomorrow! In addition, everyone participated in icebreaker games to better familiarize one another
and become more familiar with our surroundings. This morning s cardio was strenuous, but the
team seemed to get through it easily. After morning stretches and cardio, Rashaud told us what
groups to report to. This year, our guard managed to have two people in the

Drifters Bruce Dawe Analysis
Good Morning and Welcome Year 11 students to the Poetry Seminar. My name is Will and I am
here to present to you an Australian poem which represents belonging. The poem that I have
chosen to analyse is Drifters by Bruce Dawe. Today I will be discussing how the poem relates to
belonging, two important figurative devices within the poem and an extrapolation of the taught
poem migrant hostel which also explores the idea of belonging. Firstly, how the poem relates to
belonging. The poem Drifters represents belonging by the family not being able to settle as they
keep on moving houses and communities. Belonging to a place is linked to belonging in a
family. Everyone in this family is affected by the father s decision to relocate. To belong in this
family, movement is required, despite individual desires. Family members often have to
compromise or sacrifice what they want in order to belong in their family. Some members request
to establish a permanent sense of home while others don t. This is shown in the opposite opinions
of moving within the family based on how they fitted in the town they were living in for example

the end of the poem as shrivelled fruit . This means that the berries would be old and simply not
enjoyable to eat. This shows that the family is not in a place long enough to be able to grow a
healthy crop. These berries represent the family as they also appear to be happy at the start of the
poem as they were settled in their home, loving life however after the father announces that they
would be moving, turned into shrivelled fruit as they are thought to be sad and unhappy due to their
constant movements. This relates to shrivelled fruit as it is not

Iron Age Celts Research Paper
Iron Age Celts of the 1st Century
Homes:
Brythonic Celts is the name given to the Celts who occupied Britain during the Iron Age, and they
were a people fragmented and separated into several different tribes all across Britain. Each Tribe
had its own king that lead and governed them, as opposed to being one, single united body.
Tribes of Celts would often protect themselves in cases of battle against enemies in something
known as a Hill Fort, which was, of course, situated on top of a hill they were defensive settings,
as living at the top of the hill gave them the advantage in battle of seeing their enemies approach
and being able to prevent them as they climbed up the hill. However, it is suspected that these
were not permanent accommodations and may have been used as assembly points for tribes to
withstand a short siege, as they contained no sources of water. The sizes of these Hill Forts would
vary; while some where only capable of containing one or two families, others were able to house
many more. It also depended upon whether they were built to defend themselves from attacking
tribes, or invading the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and the wind out. The only sources of light or heat came from a fireplace often placed in the

She also gave a history of nodules in her mouth which biopsy showed papilloma (Figure A). In endoscopy nodularity of the esophageal mucosa was seen in the entire length and a single nodule was seen on the epiglottis. Coarse nodularity was seen in the stomach from cardia and fundus to the antrum. Nodularity of the bulb and D2 was also seen and multiple polyps of different sizes were seen in colon (Figure B) (Video 1). Biopsies was taken from these polyps and reported as hamartomatous polyps. The patient had facial and acral lesions which biopsy confirmed trichilemmomas and acral keratosis. Thyroid and breastsonography showed multiple benign nodules which was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1996, the susceptibility locus for Cowden syndrome was mapped to chromosome 10q22 23, and in 1997, germline mutations in the PTEN gene (phosphatase and tensin homology, deleted on chromosome 10) on 10q23 were first reported in families with this syndrome. Hamartomas in Cowden syndrome affect all three germ cell layers but most commonly arise from ectodermal and endodermal elements. Almost all patients (90% to 100%) have mucocutaneous lesions that include trichilemmomas, acral keratoses, and oral papillomas. Breast lesions affect the majority of female patients and include fibroadenomas, fibrocystic disease, and adenocarcinomas (25% to 50%). Thyroid abnormalities, such as multinodular goiter and follicular adenoma, are found in one half to two thirds of patients. Thyroid carcinoma occurs in 3% to 10% of patients. Macrocephaly, cerebellar gangliocytoma, and genitourinary malformations are also frequent components of Cowden syndrome. Increased risks for endometrial carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma have been added to the operational criteria for Cowden ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. The Differences Of Racial Profiling And Iron Triangles Imagine that you are going on a plane to some far exotic country. You get to the airport, but you notice people staring at you and give you disgusted looks and even looks of fear, almost like you re a monster. You are going through security you look to the left of you and you see a curtained box, suddenly you get nervous. You know what happens in those boxes what if they pull you out of the line and make you go in there. There is no one to help you, there is no one to help you stop them if they do. You are completely helpless. This is what it felt like going to the airport when I was 12. Racial profilingis meant to serve a good purpose but there are other more accurate ways of getting the same result without discriminating against an entire group of people. Iron triangles are meant to help the public effectively communicate and participate more in their government but the drawback of this method is that sometimes the iron triangle will begin to only care about its components and not the public it is meant to serve. In this essay, I will explain what happened to Shoshanna and how she was racially profiled on a plane. Then I will compare how racial profiling and iron triangles are alike. Lastly, I will explain how iron triangles have the power to change or institute policies and how that power can be used to end racial profiling. Shoshanna was a 36 year old American citizen. On September 11, 2011, she and two men who were sitting beside her were forced out of the plane ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Victorian Period Romantic period analysis The beauty of nature and its ability to set you free, the powers of imagination, individuality and a rebellion to tyranny are some of the ideas the romantic period brought to society s attention. While rejecting neoclassical views of order, reason, tradition, society and formal diction. Romanticism allowed people to get away from the constrained rational views of life and concentrate on an emotional and sentimental side of humanity. The definition of poetry by William Wordsworth , (an important poet of the romantic period) exemplifies the importance of emotion and the individual, stating Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings. It was the publication of a collection of poems by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Romantic escapism is an extremely important element of John Keats poetry, serving as a foundation for many of his poems. In the ode to a Nightingale he is pouring out his thoughts and is longing for escape from the world full of strife, sadness and grief. The recurrence of this theme in his poems is actually not only a part of romanticism, but also greatly a result of his personal unfortunate experiences in life. This painful experience in life is what makes him somewhat pessimistic and compels him to resort to the option of escapism through his poetry ( KEATS PROJECTION OF ROMANTIC ESCAPISM ). The poem Ode to a nightingale begins with the narrator saying he feels a drowsy numbness but the feeling is not from jealousy of the nightingale s happiness because the narrator rejoices in the song. While listening to and appreciating the sweetly sung song of the nightingale, Keats too, wishes to become like her so that he can fly away from the cruel world that has given him nothing else but pain. That I might drink, and leave the world unseen, and with thee fade away into the forest dim. (Keats 1006) Through the use of the nightingale, a very real living creature in nature, Keats has provided us with both a real bird and a symbol of the immortality that is nature. Nature, in its never ending cycle of life and death, achieves its own kind of immortality. This is something that men will never achieve. The bird is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Real Slumdogs The video The Real Slumdogs show us many different aspects of the culture residing in Dharavi. There are several different types of statuses that people can achieve from a sociological stand point, but the one I am referring to in the video is achieved statuses. An achieved status is a position that is earned, accomplished, or involves at least some effort or activity on the individual s part. Take the story of Babu, the hard working trash picker for instance. This trash picker has worked most of his life as a trash picker, and through this dedication he has finally become his own boss. Although he is still picking trash, he oversees other workers and helps them learn the trade. If he had not worked tirelessly and put in this effort to get... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I find myself looking at this trying to, as the sociological term goes, take the role of the other . Taking the role of the other is defined as putting yourself in someone elses shoes; understanding how someone else feels and thinks, so you anticipate how that person will act. If I were to look at Lakshmi for instance, I see that she works in terrible conditions with her family, and that she cares very much for her daughter, Sheetal. I see that she doesn t like the conditions in which her family, or any family in Dharavi for that matter, lives. This has made her provide an education for her daughter, even though it is costly to her own salary. Since she knows how tough it can be to make a living in Dharavi, she has helped with a program called Project Acorn. This helps provide services to other slum dwellers and their children to get an education. She is a very caring person, and wants to see the people of Dharavi get into better living conditions so they aren t suffering or not getting anywhere. Shailesh cares for his family, and wants them to have the best life they can. While he wants this, he also wants to pursue his own dreams as a Bollywood actor. He wants to become a star and this makes him use a good bit of his monthly earnings to take acting classes. He is a very driven individual, and his efforts have finally gotten him a foothold in the film industry, as a background dancer in a music ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Porphyria s Lover Essay Captured Moments in the Victorian Age While much of the Victorian Era centers around the rigid constructs of society, some authors and artists pull away from the strict rules and realism. Claude Monet, the French painter was a major contributor to the Impressionist Movement and his 1873 Impression, Sunrise is an oil painting on canvas that depicts a gloomy dawn over a harbor in the new style. The British poet, Robert Browning is known for his dramatic monologues, one of which is Porphyria s Lover , written in 1834. The poetic style allows for the character to speak straight to the audience. Both forms of art deviate from traditional Victorian values, capturing feelings and personality, rather than morality and truth. In the painting, Impression,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Monet s technique was a method of painting which didn t find favor with the establishment, though, who considered it primitive and vulgar ( Monet: The Impressionists ). His reaction to being rejected by salons was to form a company of artists that created their own exhibition. It was at their first exhibition that Impression, Sunrise was shown and the term Impressionism would be coined. As the originally contemptuous name suggests, it was as much Monet s title as his picture that antagonised the public and the press (Wilmer). In an era that valued solid truth, Impressionism was a rebellion. Browning was similarly rejected. His readers declared it was, impossible to make sense of his poetry, they said, he must have gone mad, he was unreadable (Everett). The Victorian writers are known for presenting a clear moral or message in each work; a piece must have purpose. However, in Browning s work, the readers are required to evaluate and infer a meaning for themselves. Any sane reader can determine that the closing lines of the Porphyria s Lover : And thus we sit together now,/And all night long we have not stirred,/And yet God has not said a word (Browning lines 58 60) do not reflect a moral that society should follow. There is no voice of the poet for the reader to turn to for an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Analysis Of The Poem The Duchess Chaucer s Book of the Duchess has been widely debated as to when it was written as this influences the interpretation of which historical figures were fashioned after characters in the poem. The poem was written as a memorial for the death of Duchess Blanche of Lancaster, whose husband John of Gaunt was a patron of Chaucer s. Knowing the date that Chaucer wrote this poem affects the way in which readers and audience at the time interpreted the poem. The initial response is to read the Black Knight figure as John of Gaunt, because the character is lamenting the loss of his love that is named Lady White in the poem. The French translation of White is Blanche, which makes it evident that the poem is a type of tribute for her death. Therefore the poem can be interpreted as the love between John of Gaunt and Duchess Blanche, as well as his grief for her now that she has passed. The narrator is interpreted to be Chaucer, as his status in the poem appears to be lower than the Black Knight, and the narrator himself is dealing with a grief of his own though it does not explicitly say whom he mourns. Chaucer has carefully woven historical context through The Book of the Duchess by subtly inferring real medieval figures with characters in the poem, as well as the many classical and medieval figures from prominent Greek and Roman Myths, as well as Greek philosophers and academics. Chaucer uses the death of Duchess Blanche as a reason to write The Book of the Duchess as a means to appeal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Disaster Of Nuclear Reactors An earthquake centered 130 km off shore of the city of Sendai in Miyagi caused 11 nuclear reactors that were operating at 4 different nuclear plants to shut down on March 11, 2011(Fukushima Accident, 2015). The earthquake had a magnitude of 9.0, which is classified as one of the worst earthquakes/ greatest earthquakes on the earthquake scale, the tsunami following the earthquake was about 560 sq km resulting in over 19,000 human deaths. The earthquake and tsunami caused the following nuclear units to shut down, Tokyo Electric Power Company s (Tepco) Fukushima Daiichi 1, 2, 3, and Fukushima Daini 1, 2, 3, 4, Tohoku s Onagawa 1, 2, 3, and Japco s Tokai, total 9377 MWe net (ibid). Nuclear plants create energy through radioactive substances that help the creation of energy. Substances can become radioactive because the nucleus of each atom is unstable and can decay giving off nuclear radiation in the form of alpha particles, beta particles or gamma rays (What is Radioactivity, n.d.). Most power reactors use water as a coolant, in light water reactors, the core is surrounded by the coolant under pressure. The nuclear fuel contains uranium that contains 2 to 4 percent uranium 235. For fuel rods the uranium is changed to uranium dioxide (Nuclear Energy, n.d.). Heat is created by the uranium 235 atoms splitting which is called fission then steam is made which spins a turbine to drive a generator and produces electricity, this is a nuclear reaction. • 10. Indian Ocean Basin Trade Changes and Continuities of Indian Ocean Trade The Indian Ocean Basin trade was the most significant trade after the collapse of the Mongols and the Silk Road. During the period circa 600 to 1450 CE the Indian Ocean Basin trade developed into the most important exchange of products and ideas in the world. During the period the area had numerous technological and religious developments, however the trade itself didn t change during this time as far as geography and policies of trade. To begin there were many changes during the eight hundred fifty years following 600 CE. In the beginning Buddhism was reaching its height as a trade route religion but Islam began to surpass it during the following centuries. The high point was reached when Buddhism ... The profit margin were so large that it was worth it to conquer the territory and ship it back around the horn of Africa and all the way up the Western Coast of Africa into Portugal. Because of the lack of a navy and policy controlling the trade Portugal was not only able to insert itself into the trade but it was also able to take up glorified piracy in order to increase its already sizable profits. Because of the continuities of the trade that allowed it to go on for more than eight centuries it was also destroyed by the Portuguese. In conclusion, the Indian Ocean was the definitive trading zone of the world from the early to mid 1000 s. It continuously evolved from 600 to 1450 CE. • 11. Jewish Christian Relations Essay While we speak about the tenuous relationship between Christians and Jews dating back to the time of Christ, the seeds for the schism within Judaism may have been planted more than 500 years prior. Jeremiah was one of a group of distinguished prophets whose works became part of the Old Testament canon. The Jewish quot;wisdom quot; prophetslectured, warned and blamed all who would listen about the sins of their own people, the resulting punishments that God had prescribed for them, and what they had to do to get back into God s good graces. Some prophets targeted Jewish monarchs as an idolatrous distraction which prevented the people from properly hearing the Word of God. Other prophets still maintained that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... quot; The Old Israel along with its Old Testament...had been succeeded, fulfilled, completed, replaced, and/or displaced by the New Israel, the New Testament, the ChristianChurch, the new people of God, quot; said Rabbi A. James Rudin about the Christian attitude during the formative years of the Church (Fisher, Rudin, Tannebaum 9). Sensitivity relating to the perceived expiration of the first Mosaic covenant has brought forth a minor controversy in recent decades about the political correctness of referring to the Old Testament as being quot;old. quot; Some Catholic Scripture professors express a preference for quot;Hebrew Scriptures, quot; while others apologetically retain the old reference to prevent confusion. (Pazcuzzi 2/97). The issue of Judaism having been superceded by Christianity will be addressed at various points in this paper. In addition to the writings of Jeremiah, other Old Testament works written in the centuries prior to the birth Christ pointed to the coming of a messiah to save the Jewish people from their continuing history of enslavement, persecution, and dislocation. Some Jews waited for a David like king to rescue them. Others felt that Jesus Christ who had suffered for the sins of his people, the one who had endured and conquered death was the true messiah. Whether the messiah had come or the messiah was still yet to come was the key issue between the Jews who remained Jews during the first and succeeding centuries versus those who ... An expert on Jewish scripture and Talmud, he took on writing detailed responses to questions raised by Jews on the topics of Jewish Law and interpretations of the scriptures. Maimonides made it his purpose to make God and the Jewish faith the basis of knowledge for his Jewish followers understanding and to provide summaries and interpretations of Rabbinic text, scriptures and the Torah. Mirroring mysticism, Maimonides saw God as transcendent, being completely unique as He is responsible for the existence of the world. Yet where Maimonides differs from mysticism is in his belief that the only way to know God is to know God s actions, and the only way to know God s actions is to study physics. The separation between the two theologies stems from metaphysics. According to Maimonides thought, our religious commandment is to study physics. The purpose of our existence is to perfect the image of God that we are created in, that is our rational soul, where our rational soul is life. The merging of philosophy, theology and physics compelled Maimonides to write the thirteen fundamental principles of the Jewish faith. In these fundamentals highlight the existence of the Creator in his absolute and unparalleled perfection and eternity as well as how God communicated to man through prophecy. Prophets were seen to possess intellectual perfection where the sole difference between a philosopher and prophet was the language transmittable to the commons. The intellectual difference allowed those fortunate enough to pursue further into the understanding that the 611 commandments are a program that Moses created in order to create a ... This package would outline a discounted price for a set amount of people to travel on a certain cruise ship. That way, there is enough time for a customer to realistically plan out a trip while providing an incentive for them and encourage more action as opposed to a regular priced ad. Lastly, an alternative that can be taken is to build relationships with various large companies with employees who make an income in the target range and make offers to company executives. The Entente Cordiale of 1904 can certainly be seen as a key turning point, along with other factors such as Neville Chamberlain s policy of appeasement, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the SALT I and II agreements. The signing of the Entente Cordiale in 1904 epitomised the ever growing division on the European stage in the early 1900s, and certainly contributed to a pre war alliance which precipitated the outbreak of World War One. • 29. Charles The Lamb Analysis In the two illuminations, a unity of appearance and attributes links Charles to the Lamb and sets in parallel the ways in which the earthly and heavenly rulers are honored. On facing pages, the Carolingian illuminators depicted parallel terrestrial and celestial ceremonies of the aurum coronarium. Just as Christ receives tribute in his heavenly court, so his terrestrial counterpart and reflection, Charles the Bald, receives homage in his earthly reign. The Lamb is in the dome of heaven; the king is under the baldachin s dome symbolizing heaven. Christ s exaltation in heaven is set against Charles imperial exaltation. This parallelism between terrestrial and heavenly rulers had been portrayed earlier in the diptych of Charles s Prayerbook (Figs. 6 7) and in the gable ivories of the Throne of Peter (Fig. 4). As Robert Deshman demonstrated, both the diptych and the ivories imply a concept of imitatio Christi (imitation of Christ) that exalts the ruler in his temporal office and likens him to Christ. In the Codex Aureus, the theme of Christ s triumph and exaltation has implications for the meaning of the exalted king represented on the opposite page. Charles s portrait as Christomimetes (imitator of Christ) not only enhances his status and authority among humans but it also conveys divine inspiration. Delano s Genius In Benito Cereno, By Herman Melville Adam Mandel 6 October 2014 L204 Delano s Genius The story of Benito Cereno is written by Herman Melville, yet is narrated by the captain of the Bachelor s Delight, Amasa Delano. By using an in story narrator, Melville seems to divorce himself from the action, and any opinions he may have about the characters. The reader is forced to watch the events unfold through the eyes of Delano, and this deceives the audience into thinking Delano is a senseless, aloof sailor. However, Melville actually believes Delano to be a genius and uses his multiple narrator storytelling style to hide this from the audience. Many might argue that Captain Delano was not a bright man. He did not jump on the strange occurrences on the Bachelor s Delight, and Babo fooled him on more than one occasion. However, Delano did notice the strange happenings: At this moment the young sailor s eye was again fixed on the whisperers, and Captain Delano thought he observed a lurking significance in it, as if silent signs of some Freemason sort had that instant been interchanged (Melville 54).... Poliovirus Pathogenesis Pathogenesis In 99% of poliovirus infections, alpha and beta interferons limit replication of the poliovirus in nonneural tissues, which causes the infection to end (Racaniello, 2005). There are 1 2% of poliovirus infections where the interferons do not work as well, and the virus spreads to extraneural sites and then to the central nervous system causing poliomyelitis (Racaniello, 2005). Infection with poliovirus causes the inhibition of host cap dependent translation, DNA dependent RNA synthesis, cellular protein secretion of cytokines and antigen presentation, nuclear export, and the suppression of the nuclear factor kappa light chain enhancer of activated B cells (Racaniello, 2005). Old world monkeys and chimpanzees can be experimentally infected, and humans are the natural hosts for poliovirus, because these species have suitable environments and receptors for the survival of poliovirus, but other species such as mice do not have suitable environments for poliovirus unless the mice have been experimentally altered to express CD155 (Racaniello, 2005). Some strains of the poliovirus have been able to replicate in mice due to a process of adaptation, and some strains of the virus are naturally virulent in the mice (Racaniello, 2005). Scientists were able to substitute a six amino acid sequence of the P1/Mahoney strain, which is in the VP1 capsid protein and located near the CD155 binding site, with the corresponding sequence in P2/Lansing strain (Racaniello, 2005). This caused the mice to have neurovirulence to the poliovirus (Racaniello, 2005). In humans, they have taken samples of tonsillopharyngeal tissue, the wall of the ileum and mesenteric lymph nodes and been able to isolate poliovirus from each of the samples, but even with the removal of the tonsils and adenoids there continues to be a multiplication of the poliovirus in the throat (Racaniello, 2005). The Innate Immune System In the initial phase of an infection, the innate immune system generates a rapid inflammatory response that blocks the growth and dissemination of the infectious agent. This response is followed, in vertebrates, by the development of an acquired immune response in which highly specific B and T cell receptors recognize the pathogen and induce responses that lead to its elimination (Janeway, Jr. et al., 2002). The antigen receptors of the acquired immune systemare well characterized. • 35. Consciousness In The German Ideology Before one is able to consider this quote, the concept of materialism and consciousness must be dissected. According to Marx, materialism is not only the way people s beliefs are conditioned by material activities, but also the fact that people s ideologies are conditioned by history and the powers of production. Consciousness plays a large role in his definition of materialism, because they are inherently connected. For example, The production of ideas, of conceptions, of consciousness is directly interwoven with the material activity and the material relationships of men; it is the language of actual life (Marx, 111). Marx also defines consciousness as an economic process; in other words, economic determinism defines consciousness and even history itself. This differs greatly from Hegel s idea that consciousness is a process called the dialectic, which includes distinguishing between thesis and antithesis in order to come to a conclusion. Although Marx utilizes the dialectic to analyze materialism and consciousness in The German Ideology, he goes even further than Hegel and uses this dialectic thinking to challenge Hegel s own concepts. It is important to understand the concept that the process of thinking is actually a reflection of the external world through consciousness, because then one can connect the idea that it is more of a relationship than an externalized object. Marx explains this notion when he states, In the social production of their existence, men ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, the over use of plastic bags has posed significant threats to the environment in recent times as they are non biodegradable and also a threat to wildlife. The primary reason for this concern is that plastics bags are not re used, but simply disposed of in landfills. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each year there is an increase in demands for plastic bags, and therefore more are shipped, creating further environmental pollution concerns. This increase in demand has lead to the phenomenal upsurge in the use and misuse of plastic bags globally, both in developed and developing countries. Statistics show that 4 to 5 trillion plastic bags are produced per annum, whereby North America and Western Europe account for nearly 80% (Geographical, 2005; Reusable Bags, 2005). Cheeseman (2007) states that approximately 380 billion plastic shopping bags are used in the United States annually ; in turn, only 0.6% of this is recycled. Almost 96% of plastic bags are disposed of in landfills (Williamson, 2003). This leads up to another problem as plastic bags are non biodegradable in other words, plastic bags do not biodegrade for over a thousand years (Stevens 2001). Plastic bags may also land in farms and in oceans which have an impact on the wildlife. Livestock such as cows may eat plastic bags while grazing. These pose a threat if ingested as they may tangle in their stomachs, causing serious injuries and potentially death (Dreyer et al, 1999; Rasmussen 1999). Each year over a billion birds and mammals die due to the ingestion of plastic bags (Baker, 2002). Many of these issues however, can be addressed and even resolved in several ways. The artist repetitively quotes this line throughout the song to effectively remind his listeners of his gratefulness to have a valuable mother. In the first verse of the song, Shakur informs the audience of a pessimistic aspect of his life, where he is thrown out of the house. Yet, he still yearns to see his mother and shows a nostalgic attitude toward the situation. Despite the fact that his mother is a crack addict Shakur portrays her as a black queen , displaying great esteem for what she means to him as her son. Sung by an anonymous voice, the chorus itself relatively personifies the appreciation he has towards his mother. In the second verse the artist expresses feelings of enmity towards his father who was not there for him. This allows me as a listener to conclude that Shakur s mother had to play the role of both a mother and father which further elevates a higher appreciation for his love towards her. The definition of success differs from just one person s interpretation of what success means. A large block of life is spent working to become successful: acquiring an education, being able to take care of family, achieving a life s ambition, or making money. People are told throughout childhood to work hard so they can grow up and make lots of money. Everyone aspires to be successful at whatever we are doing: starting a new business, repairing the car, writing a term paper or practicing basketball. Every bit our efforts are directed at achieving success. Success is not the end; it is the journey we take and there is no right or wrong idea of success. Money is the primary concern for some people and the main ingredient for anyone who is trying to succeed in life. For this type of person, achieving success starts with going to a good college to compete in a competitive job market and to prepare people to take on the world. People work hard to make money so they can satisfy their desires. People dream about owning a home and take pride in what they possess. Some need to appear successful in order to feel successful. These people feel accomplished when they can admire what their hard work has given them. For some, happiness is all that matters. The poem that I have chosen to analyse is Drifters by Bruce Dawe. Today I will be discussing how the poem relates to belonging, two important figurative devices within the poem and an extrapolation of the taught poem migrant hostel which also explores the idea of belonging. Iron Age Celts Research Paper Iron Age Celts of the 1st Century Homes: Brythonic Celts is the name given to the Celts who occupied Britain during the Iron Age, and they were a people fragmented and separated into several different tribes all across Britain. Each Tribe had its own king that lead and governed them, as opposed to being one, single united body. Tribes of Celts would often protect themselves in cases of battle against enemies in something known as a Hill Fort, which was, of course, situated on top of a hill they were defensive settings, as living at the top of the hill gave them the advantage in battle of seeing their enemies approach and being able to prevent them as they climbed up the hill. However, it is suspected that these were not permanent accommodations and may have been used as assembly points for tribes to withstand a short siege, as they contained no sources of water. The sizes of these Hill Forts would vary; while some where only capable of containing one or two families, others were able to house many more. It also depended upon whether they were built to defend themselves from attacking tribes, or invading the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
