New Media Literacy Essay
When the word was first used, literacy had a very traditional meaning: the ability to read and
write ( Literacy, 2011). Being literate was the norm, it was required for all and it distinguished
race and class. However, as times change and culture emerges and grows, people acquire new
knowledge, such as technology, that can very well be identified as literacy, or media literacy. As
technology leads the 21st century, students are now expected to excel and master media literacy
as well textual literacy (Jenkins, Clinton, Purushotma, Robison Weigel, 2006). This is because the
meaning of the word literacy evolves into the set of abilities and skills where aural, visual, and
digital literacy overlap (New Media Consortium as cited in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Because technology is advancing everyday, teachers, administrators and parents should ascribe
great value, money, time and/or effort to ensure that students are prepared to face the world with
as much media literacy skills as possible to be full participants in society (Jenkins et al., 2006). To
do this, educators and leaders must insure that there are countless resources to teach new media
literacy, whether in school, after school programs or even at home. Teachers, parents, and after
school caregivers all have a responsibility and a role to educate students and nurture their new
media skills (Jenkins et al., 2006). Literature Review Why should educators consider adding new
media literacies to curriculums? The answer is simple: new media literacies or skills emphasize
social and communication skills (Jenkins et al., 2006). This new culture requires that students or
participants in general be prepared and equipped as full participants having the social skills required
to contribute and they must be culturally competent (Jenkins et al., 2006). In addition, participating
in online communities, such as social network sites, intensifies or enhances certain properties not
represented in face to face communications, such as persistence, searchability, exact copyability and
invisible audiences (Boyd, 2008, pg. 2). Although these properties can change social dynamics, they
give students an outlet for their creativity and

The Importance Of The Land Of Opportunity In America
Land of Opportunity for Everyone. The United States is a very diverse country, which makes it
the most unique out of every other place in the world. What helps this wonderful country of
opportunity become what it is to this day is because of the immigrants who traveled here.
Coming from a family of immigrants I know first hand what my grandparents and parents had to
go through to earn the life they gave me today. Immigrants are an important part in our society.
They do the work that most people don t want to do. As in, work in factories, construction sites,
and on farms. Immigrants help run a high demand country, so why get rid of them? They have a
purpose here. Everyone around the world knows that America is the Land of Opportunity .
People work so hard just to come here and start a new life. They all want to experience the
American Dream . To us, this is a normal lifestyle. If you look at immigrants situations closely,
you see their country s trouble and how over there they have it much worse. Wouldn t you want to
give them an opportunity where you and they know is better? So many countries in Europe are
having a hard time and people want to escape that and move to the States to start fresh. My
grandparents moved to Chicago from Poland when my mom was 19. They worked tremendously
hard to make enough money to make sure they were set for the future. They are lucky that they got
to come here and turn their life around and make sure that my brother and I didn t have to

The United States Supreme Court
Acclaim for asserting the United States Supreme Court as a substantial participant in the American
structure of government has been ascribed to the guidance of John Marshall as Chief Justice of the
United States Supreme Court from 1801 to 1835. By 1835, the Supreme Court had attained a level
of equality with the prowess and prestige as that of Congress and the Executive that was not present
before John Marshall was appointed to the position. Central to this development was the Court s
adoption of the Constitution as its distinct reserve. Chief Justice John Marshall utilized judicial
review to eliminate the Supreme Court from the socio political conflicts in government and to
institute the rule of law based on the principles established in the Constitution of the Unites States.
Marshall and his colleagues erected the Court s recognized power by effectively affirming an
assertion to explain the Constitution and subsequently supplant the Constitution as supreme law in
the commonplace sequence of arbitration and by the end of his judgeship firmly supplanted the
Supreme Court s role in the U.S. system of government. John James Marshall came into this world
on September 24, 1755 in a small cabin built of logs near a small rural community in Virginia
known as Germantown. John was the first son born to Thomas Marshall and Mary Keith. His
mother and father went on to have fifteen children giving John eight sisters and six brothers.1 In the
beginning of the 1760s, the Thomas

Comparing Graff And Birkenstein s They Say I Say
This weeks reading included They Say I Say by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein and From
Critical Thinking to Argument by Sylvan Barnet, Hugo Bedau, and John O Hara. In They Say I
Say, Graff and Birkenstein talk about the importance of being able to look at writings and be able
to not only find the thesis/ argument that the author is making but also be able to figure out The
view or views that motivate the thesis the they say (Graff and Birkenstein 155). In From Critical
Thinking to Argument Barnet, Bedau, and O Hara talk about how to think critically. This includes
being able to see both sides of an argument. A good way to do this is by clustering, which is where
one thinks about possible counterarguments/ responses to their claim. We also read about how when

On Monday, we did the Writing10 diagnostic test where we wrote a response to an article that
talked about how students don t summarize, but rather copy and paste quotes which shows students
aren t fully engaging with the text. On Wednesday, we began class by getting our diagnostic

the diagnostic test. After going over the diagnostic test we played two truths and a lie to get to

steps to take to think critically when reading articles. These steps included analyzing the argument

what is the authors stance and if they are objective in their response, and does the sources support

Service Learning English Language Learner
Service learning includes enhanced opportunities for learning and exploring the educational field.
Also, developing a personality, social skills and gain hands on learning experience about the
environment of English Language Learner and their needs. From increasing my knowledge in
academia and materials, I learned more about communities and the people in our society. From
service learning, I learned to develop critical thinking and problem solving while tutoring a student
in math, reading, writing, and vocabulary. It was my responsibilities to make sure the student

different ways. Thus, I had to present the same task in different ways at the different levels so
that my English Language Learner will understand the materials and learn. While tutoring my
student Eh Kaw Soe I mostly touch on reading aloud, writing short sentences, short and long
vowel, vocabulary and math. Also, I taught a different topic every Thursday. Moreover, before
moving to the next topic, I reviewed the previous topic to make my student improved his
metacognition about the topic and use his higher level of thinking skills. For example, every
Thursday I write vocabulary words on the flash cards and go over before reading aloud and after
reading to make sure the student understands the words that are used in the book. Moreover, I

Agriculture In The Mayan Civilization
The imbalancing between the Mayan population and the effective magnitude of their agriculture
suggest the situation of the Mayan people in the availability to their long term survival. The
Mayans showed increasement in their population expeditiously which resulted in higher demand
for food for the people to consume. Consequently, in order for the Mayans to manage the
increasing population, the Mayans turned to use their accessible land over to cultivation. (Drew
139) With this in mind, the author, David Drew, asked an intrigued question of how much food
the land could produced for the Mayans? (138) By all means, the question David Drew issued,

Given that, the Mayan regions displayed a different variety of soil fertility and localized weather
patterns that affected the circumstances for agriculture to many different portions of areas around
the southern regions of Mesoamerica. (139) In fact, farmers, who currently cultivate as the similar
system the Mayans practiced and lives in parts of ancient southern regions of Mesoamerica,
announced that soils in the area will naturally diminish over the years in productivity, fertility, and
crop yields. (139) With the attention of the growing Mayan population, the Mayan people were in
need of retaining the food demand of the Mayan population by cultivating in the remaining lands
near their regions that are enriched in soil. With this in mind to the naturally constant changing of
the soils, the Mayans enforced to cut down the time of fallow for their fields which eventually be in
high risk strategy in resulting in a cultivation catastrophe for temporary ends. (139) Altogether, the

Canadian Television Identity
A recurring theme throughout Canadian television studies is identifying the relationship between
television and national identity. There is a political ideology that suggests support of national
culture is crucial to the existence and well being of the nation (Matheson, 2015). There is often
assumed a linkage between cultureand a sense of national belonging and citizenship throughout
Canadian televisionseries as a way to influence cultural nationalism. Within the Canadian
competitive cooking game show MasterChef Canada, Canadian paradigms of ethnicity and national

And by offering the right products at the right prices we will help our customers live a more
sustainable life at home. IKEA has an important role to play in terms of taking responsibility for
people and the environment. This is why sustainability is one of four cornerstones in the new
Group strategy Growing IKEA together . We have a strong foundation to build on it is in our
culture to twist and turn established truths to find a new angle, a new idea, and to have the
courage to try to do things differently. IKEA is obsessed with making more from less, and we
hate to waste resources of any kind. This will continue to be our compass in years to come, and
we will stimulate new thinking and innovation in our sustainability work. Innovation is needed to
build sustainable solutions into the IKEA range and to tackle some of the global challenges
society faces. We need to identify and use more resource efficient materials and develop better
solutions for reusing and recycling IKEA products once our customers no longer want them. I
believe IKEA together with our customers, co workers, suppliers and the rest of society can make
a big difference. The 50 million low energy bulbs purchased at IKEA in the past three years
represent energy savings equivalent to the output of four and a half nuclear plants, and substantial
reductions of carbon dioxide emissions. This gives just a hint of the potential that lies in the word

Juxtaposition In Cold Blood
In Cold Blood and the Death Penalty Is the killing of certain people morally acceptable? In his
novel, In Cold Blood, Capote makes an argument about the death penalty. In Cold Blood, written
by Truman Capote, is a seemingly objective account of the Clutter murders of Holcomb Kansas.
Capote details both the lives of the Clutters and the lives of the two men involved in their murder.
In this novel Capoteargues against the death penalty using devices such as simile, metaphor,
juxtaposition, and. In the first passage of the book, Capote writes about the incident and the
resulting deaths. He writes At the time not a soul in sleeping Holcomb heard them four shotgun
blasts that, all told, ended six human lives (Capote 5). This is an example of juxtaposition because
it shows the contrast of the sleeping town and the tragedy that was occurring at the same time.
Capote uses this juxtaposition, not only to detail the nature of the crime, but also to make a subtle
argument about the case. After finding out that the Clutters have been murdered, the community is
shocked and horrified. They cannot sleep at night because of the fear that the... Show more content

addition, by comparing it to a jack o lantern, Capote paints a picture in the reader s mind of the
eerie glow coming from the warehouse, and the metaphorical fire found within. This comparison
shows the reader the fear that the inmates feel and makes the reader feel bad for the people waiting
to die. If the reader does feel bad for the inmates, it strengthens Capote s argument against the death
penalty because it brings up the point of cruel and unusual

Online Dating Services and Mister Wrong Essay
As a happily pre engaged woman, with a pre engagement ring, I have no reason to scan the
listings of the ubiquitous dating services on the Web. Yet, ever since I saw the ad, Get Your Flirt
On!, curiosity has gotten the better of me. I spend most of my time in search of eligible men,
but I also search for eligible women. When I first looked at the men in my zip code, I told myself
that I was looking for matches for my friends. But in truth I cannot think of a faster way to lose
my single friends than telling them I have been looking for their perfect match online. So I admit
it. I like to see who is available even though I am not.
A lot of the men are obviously Mister Wrong. Take the man who says he prefers thin, athletic

The ones who write, well I m kinda new at this but thought I should give it a shot, are not very
goal oriented. Those who write, I believe in magic, do you? make me squirm in my chair. And the
ones who say, I am a student in the school of life make me wonder, aren t we all?
Some of the men have potential. The man who says he looks like Ernest Hemingway but does not
have the sexual hang ups might be worth a shot if he weren t three decades my senior. And the one
who said I m a bad dancer, but a good listener sounds promising.
But still, on the whole these men remind me of how happy I am to be a pre engaged woman. When
I look at all the frogs I might have had to kiss, I am glad for my prince, even if he is from a 12 year
old fairytale that is very familiar.
When I finish surveying the men in a given zip code, I look at the women in the same zip code
to see if I can match them up. The man who says he expects breakfast in bed on the first date
would be a good match for the woman wearing a leopard print halter and posing provocatively. The

Bohemian Rhapsody Analysis
With its evolving and unique sound, Bohemian Rhapsody by the British band Queen may be one
of the strangest, most inspired and least understood songs in the history of rock. Released on
October 31, 1975 in the album A Night at the Opera, Bohemian Rhapsody became very popular,
staying at the top of the UK Singles Chartfor nine weeks and by the end of January, had more than
a million copies sold. Freddie Mercury, the sole writer of this song, never disclaimed the song s
official meaning, but Brian May, the lead guitarist of the band, believes it is about his struggles in
life and how he tried to get past society s standards, for the lyrics progress through the central
character s understanding of the situations portrayed in the song.... Show more content on

The song becomes operatic, almost as if to show the importance of the situation at hand. The
character begins to plead with lyrics I m just a poor boy, nobody loves me, He s just a poor boy
from a poor family, Spare him his life from this monstrosity, Easy come easy go will you let me
go. However, those who are holding the judgement express no mercy, for then they respond with
Bismillah! No we will not let you go . The seriousness of the condition at hand is also shown by the
stern choir of voices striking the character with judgement.
The song then transitions to a hard rock sound, with the drums and guitar unleashing powerful
rhythms. This sound perfectly matches the character s reaction to their judgers, which anger and
defiance. This can be seen from the lyrics So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye, So
you think you can love me and leave me to die, Oh baby, can t do this to me baby, Just gotta get
out, just gotta get right outta here . However, this doesn t last long, for after a short powerful guitar
riff, the song shifts to a down tempo ballad. This leads to the character feeling resignation and
complacency with the lyrics Nothing really matters, anyone can see, nothing really matters...to me .
Then the song fades out with the character saying Any way the wind blows , as if they are
accepting whatever challenge they had before.
All in all, this work of art manages to be equally loved by young kids

Reflection Paper On Robotics Team
Many students while they are in high school will participate in clubs and sports of all likes. I did
something a little different than track or chess club. I helped design, build, and showcase
robots. We aren t talking about a some desktop toy or tiny remote control car, what I helped
create was an over one hundred pounds of beastly machinery. There is one very important fact
that makes this a lot more difficult than it already sounds, we only had 6 weeks to build it. All of
this during after school hours and on weekends. Now balancing all of stress of robotics, school,
and life is not the easiest task. The events of my senior year robotics season may have been the
most stressful few months of my life, but the day that set off the season would become the day I
will remember most of all. Our robotics teamwas called Team SCREAM, our designation number
was 4522. My senior year and last year on the team was one of the roughest for all involved. The
leaders of our team were a little worried about this year since we were now leading the team, it
would fall on us whether or not we succeeded or failed. Our leadership personal was very few in
members to lead the sub teams. We had two experienced programmers, three extremely competent
mechanical team members, a great strategy team lead by one very determined person, and then our

The Importance of Function Over Form in the Classical...
In the 18th century, the concerto was transformed into a viable instrumental genre to both
demonstrate virtuosity as well as a cohesive character that embodied the natural. Though the series
of changes from the Baroque concerto grosso to the Classical concerto were gradual and cannot be
attributed to a single composer, the Piano ConcertoNo. 20 in D minor K. 466 by Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozartis a skillful representation of the genre in that era. Of particular interest in this concerto is
the treatment of sonata form in the first movement. When compared to other instrumental genres of
that era, there is a tangible divide between the sonata form of the concerto and that of other
instrumental genres such as the symphony. To understand this... Show more content on

466, is a synthesis of both sonata form and the Baroque ritornello principle. In this concerto, for
example, the opening orchestra tutti is not a first exposition, because it remains in the tonic
throughout and does not contain the complete compliment of themes. Thus, this tutti serves as
preparation for the soloist, who enters with a novel theme in measure 77. After the completion
of the exposition in both D minor and F major by soloist and orchestra, there is a short transition
(mm. 174 192) based upon the opening material leading into the tonally unstable development.
The remainder of the first movement retains much of this format. As W.H. Hadow states, the
form of the soloist s portions are thus comparable to sonata form, but the form of the whole is
still governed by the ritornello. The different manifestation of sonata form in the genre of the
concerto may lead one to believe that the form of the Classical concerto developed independently
of other genres that exercise this form. In fact, K. 466, with its ritornello principle, bares close
resemblance to the da capo aria. As the Classical concerto functions as a platform for virtuosic
display for the soloist, similar to an aria for a vocalist, the form of the first movement of K. 466 is a
result of the stylistic and functional demands of the concerto. In the 18th century, there was an
increase in the ideals of contrast, communication, expression and

Social Justice And Inclusion Within The Scottish Education...
The first part of this paper explores the concepts of social justice and inclusion within the Scottish
Education System. Both of which are complex theories and ultimately influence each other. What is
Social Justice? What is inclusion? How are they related? What does it mean to have an inclusive
environment for students? How do we achieve this in schools? Does society play a part in how
inclusion is introduced and maintained? These are just some of the questions that I endeavor to
explore. Consistently throughout the PGDE course we are studying how to become a more
inclusive practitioner whether it is through campus based learning, additional readings or teaching
experience in local schools. We continuously strive towards learning how to make school a more
inclusive environment. This assignment exemplified with references to reading such as
Government policies, legislation and research articles as well as reflecting on my own teaching
experience I hope to highlight the teachers role in creating an inclusive environment within an
individual classroom. Having studied selective literature with theories and research, which could
have influenced Scottish Education Policies, I draw attention to discrepancies on matters of
inclusion and social justice that exist between them and the implications they have for learning. In
part 2, I will provide a critical reflection on my own teaching practice during recent placement by
making detailed connections to an appended lesson plan.

Argumentative Essay On Nuclear Energy
Nuclear energy has been used since 1895 to create weapons that could destroy men by the millions.
Scientists later transformed this destructive weapon into a new form of usable, renewable energy.
Nuclear energy is energy created by harnessing the energy produced by the nuclear reactions that
take place inside the nucleus of the UraniumIsotope 235, ( Nuclear Energy ). Nuclear energy is
one attempt to decrease the rate at which nonrenewable fossil fuels are being consumed. Some
believe nuclear energy to be an environmentally friendly and self sustaining way to produce
energy; however, there are a countless number of social and economically risks to consider;
ultimately, the detrimental effects power plant leaks and explosions have on the human body, the
cost it takes to produce the plants, and the production of nuclear waste, should be enough to
persuade one to turn away from using nuclear energy as a source of power.
The fear of a nuclear power plants is reasonable, considering there were thirty three accidents
between the 1950 s and early 2000 s, (McInnes, Colin). Multiple incidents jeopardized the health
of employees and near by citizens. Six of these incidents happened in the United States, five in

Synthetic Leases
Abstract
By now most of us have heard and read numerous articles about synthetic leases. We also know
synthetic lease transactions are relatively commonplace for financing corporate build to suits and
acquisitions, and that they are widely accepted by corporate real estate executives, financial
institutions, and accounting firms. But is the synthetic lease a panacea for the corporate executive
faced with a leasing decision? Are they the perfect solution for keeping real estate assets oil the
company balance sheet? Are there any drawbacks to a synthetic lease? Before entering into a
synthetic lease, the corporate tenant should know the potential shortcomings of a synthetic lease as
well as when and when not to use one. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Off balance sheet financing, for instance, operating and synthetic leases, not only overstates
corporate earnings and perjures their financial positions, it also allows them to preserve the ratios
needed to assure debt contracts. This decreases the authority of such contracts, because the
companies are not in reality keeping their debt ratios low; they re lying about the amount of debt
they actually have (Edman, 2011). Ethical professionals, who willfully present transparent financial
statements, are the only true way to prevent misconstrued financial statements. Likewise users of
financial data will always have their work cut out for them. Investors must be diligent to
discover a company s true financial state. FASB will never rid the world of every accounting
inconsistency (Edman, 2011). Synthetic leases can serve two important purposes: First, for
financial accounting purposes, they enable lessees/sponsors to treat leases as operating leases,
whereby payments are recorded as rent expense and the underlying assets and the associated
liabilities are kept off the lessee s balance sheet. This treatment of the lease enables the company
to show a stronger balance sheet than if the lease was treated as a capital lease (Soroosh and
Ciesielski, 2009). Second, for federal income tax purposes, these contracts are structured so that the
lessee/sponsor may treat the

Why The Rise And Fall Of The Byzantine Empire

Why The Rise and Fall of The Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire, or the Eastern Roman Empire, was one of the largest the world has ever
seen and it remained so powerful for many reasons but like every empire, it would fall. In 330 A.D.,
The Roman Emperor Constantine I chose Byzantium to become the new Roman Capitol, he named
it Constantinople. The site of Byzantium was originally created to serve as a trade point between
Europe and Asia Minor but it was very helpful because of its strategic location along the Bosporus
strait. A key significance of Byzantium is in the citizens of Constantinople and the rest of the
Eastern Roman Empire who identified strongly as Romans and Christians for the first time ever.
The Byzantine Empire would be able to last so long because the ineffective leadership and
barbarian attacks that plagued the Western Roman Empire, did not really harm the Byzantine
Empire due the west being a screener for the barbarians and the East having very strong leadership
through this time. Through this time period, the Byzantine s were able to develop technology such
as Greek fire and the counterweight trebuchet. The Byzantine Empire was one of longest lasting
empires ever because of its leadership and technology over the years but it would fall because of its
inability to maintain defenses against the crusades.
The Byzantine Empire started and lasted because of the Roman Emperor Constantine.

Cause And Effect Of Climate Change
Climate change is one of the biggest news headlines of today. While there are skeptics that believe
that global warming is just a hoax, there are many undeniable phenomenons happening around the
world. The effects of climate change, in the long run, will be catastrophic if it is left alone. In just
the past two months, there have been four hurricanes that made landfall in North America, and a
wildfire more aggressive than has ever been seen before, ripping through California, killing forty
people and leveling almost six thousand structures. Millions of Americans are displaced due to
these unusually aggressive storms and the fires raging throughout California. Arctic species have
seen massive reductions in their populations, with less food to eat, and less mates to breed with.
The toxicity of the air in urban cities and contamination of waters outside these cities is on the rise.
If the world keeps dismissing the importance of climate change, there will be calamitous
consequences for the future generations. The effects of climate change, if not fixed, will be Arctic
ice melting, reduction in animal populations, habitats threatened, and the air toxicity and seasonal
allergies to humans. The causes include the greenhouse effect and air pollution. In the past decade,
Americans have seen global warmingin the headlines constantly. About 71 percent of American
scientists say that global warming is happening now (Saad). According to Linda Saad, Forty five
percent of Americans

the outcome is positive. A patient with hyperthyroidismwill depend on how they react from

a patient with hyperthyroidism due to an autoimmune disorder such as Grave s Disease usually gets
worse and will affect quality of life. Hyperthyroidism is a disease that is not preventable.
Hypothyroidism is not preventable either if you have this disease due to natural causes. The only
time both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism is when the patient is taking too much medication
and has not yet determined the right dosage of medication. Once the medication is regulated there
is no prevention for either once again. Undiagnosed thyroid disease whether hypothyroidism or

Daniel Boone Essay
Daniel Boone was born on October 22, 1734 and later died on September 26, 1820. He was an
American pioneer and hunter whose frontier explorations made him one of the first heroes of the
United States. Boone is most famous for his exploration and settlement of what is now the state of
Kentucky. Despite resistance from American Indians, for whom Kentuckywas a traditional hunting
ground, in 1775 Boone blazed the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gapand into Kentucky.
There he founded Boonesborough, one of the first English speaking settlements beyond the
Appalachian Mountains. Before the end of the 18th century, more than 200,000 people entered
Kentucky by following the route marked by Boone.

camp and found that everybody was gone home.
Daniel Boone and John Stewart were alone now; well that s what they thought. Just as the two
were getting ready to leave the old camp, Daniel s brother Squire Boone and his friend came upon
the campsite in search of Daniel. They were really shock to have found each other but were happy
because they were all together now. Soon after they all met, John Stewart was captured by the
Indians and later killed and the man that came with his brother had returned home by himself. They
were now left alone out in the dangerous forests surrounded by savages all alone. They tried to
make the best out of them being alone as they could. They actually had some enjoyable times out
there together. They continued to hunt and prepared a new cottage to stay in. They remained there
unharmed until the winter, and on the first day of May, 1770, Daniel s brother returned home to the
settlement to get horses and ammunition. This left Daniel all alone, without anything to eat or

Saint Augustine Of Hippo Once Stated
Saint Augustine of Hippo once stated, The world is a book and those who do not travel read only
one page. It was after stumbling across this statement that I was influenced to call up my friend and
suggest a road trip.
When we started off, it was a beautiful day. The bright morning sun peeked over the Appalachian
mountains to bid us farewell as we packed our belongings into the 2011 Chevy Cruze. Dew still
perched on the delicate leaves of various summer flowers while we rode down the road towards
Tennessee.
My friend Sarah drove. Her fingers tapped the steering wheel in rhythm to the Carrie Underwood
song blaring from the radio. It was the radio s job to keep us awake since we had left so early in the
morning; however, it was not doing a good job as I fell asleep only twenty minutes into the ride.
Sarah had to wake me up at the rest stop just outside of Roanoke, Virginia.
Hey, Allyson, she called as she shook my shoulders, it would be nice if you woke up, so I could
take a nap.
I just mumbled an incoherent string of words in response.
I can just drive right back to Pennsylvania. We don t have to take a road trip.
That got me up. I had so much invested into this trip like money and time.
I sat in the driver s seat and watched the road continuously channel under the car sort of like a
conveyor belt. It was hypnotizing, just keeping my eye on the road. Before either Sarah or I knew
it, we were already parked in front of our hotel in Gatlinburg,

Genetic Identification of Major Psychiatric Disorders Essay
Most major psychiatric disorder diagnoses are defined as descriptive syndromes on the basis of
expert consensus. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and the
International Classification of Diseases (ICD) are the standard diagnostic tools used by
psychiatrists and clinicians world wide. Unfortunately, these manuals are classified by clinical
agreement and encounter revision every few years. Perpetual revision and increased medicalization
of mental disorders also creates a dilemma for diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders such
as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD), major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Diagnostic classification and... Show

While French physicians consider ADHD a psychosocial condition rather than a biological, only
0.5% of French children are diagnosed with ADHD. Conversely, 11% of US children are
diagnosed as well as prescribed drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall. The over diagnosis of child
onset ADHD in the US also correlates with the rise of Ritalin prescription and abuse in school and
college age adolescents (Mayes et al., 2008). Although physicians are working to implement greater
scrutiny on false diagnoses of ADHD, there is still heavy misuse among the adolescent population
and variability of doctor bias. The inconsistency in both reliable diagnostic and treatment consensus
emphasize the imperative to implement stronger genetics based studies of psychiatric disorders.
Such studies to pinpoint genes, gene products and eventually, neuro biological pathways related to
mental disorders can elucidate focused diagnostic tests and effective treatments for mental health
patients. Population based studies were among the first scientific studies to confirm the heritable
nature of mental disorders. Since the 1970s, psychiatrists clinically observed mental disorders
among family members and hypothesized their possible heritable tendencies.
Such hypotheses could not be empirically proven until researchers began doing twin and family
studies. Before the Lichtenstein et al. (2009) family study, several population based studies were

Education Inequality In Thailand
Although gender and education inequality may be both gradually increasing while shifting up and
down throughout the years, the adult literacy rate in Thailand has only been increasing since 2000.
In 2015, only about four percent of Thailand s citizens aged fifteen and over were illiterate. This
ends up positively contributing to a wide variety of social improvements, such as lower infant
mortality rates and higher educationlevels for future generations. This is because a parent who
went to school and learned to reads is more likely to do the same with their child, regardless of
gender. The same goes for length of education as well the more education they received, the more
education they will likely expect their child to experience.
As Thailand s globalization has increased very little over the years, another major developmental
indicator has also done the same. The World Bank shows Thailand s average citizen lifespan from
birth experiences a four year increase from 2000 to 2014, from 70 years to seventy four years.
Another improving factor for Thai citizens is the increasing health standards even after the 2014
military coup. Thailand has ranked higher than the surrounding countries for births attended by a
skilled staff member since 2000 and beyond. This is a major indicator of Thai development, not
only for health but also for women s rights. From the year 2000 to 2012, Thailand s percentage
ranged from 97.3% and 99.6% of births. In comparison, Laos highest percentage

The kidneys are important organs in your body to help filter waste. Sometimes organs may fail and
cause further problems within your body. There are treatments available for kidneyfailure including
dialysis and a kidney transplant. Both treatments do involve life changes and the patient must stay
healthy. It is important to learn about your body and learn the signs and symptoms of when

from 2 ВЅ to 4 ВЅ hours. Your blood pressure will be check regularly. Your machine will be
adjusted to ensure that correct amounts are being removed from your body. You are allowed to
relax, read, watch television, do work, or even sleep. The other type of dialysis is called
peritoneal dialysis. This requires more work from the patient. The patient must maintain a clean
surface on the abdomen in order to help prevent infection. The patient will again weigh
themselves to determine the amount of fluid. Then the patient will wear a mask while cleaning
the catheter site. Fluid allowed to stay in the peritoneal cavity is drained back into a plastic bag.
The patient will then remove the bag and connect a new one. Once the fluid is in the body, the
new bag will be rolled up and placed on the patient s underwear until time for the next treatment.
This type of dialysis is more work, more intense, and is required much more. It is done four to
five times a day at about 30 minutes each time. There is alternative machine to this called a cycler.
It is used every night. Five to six bags are used and the machine will automatically change fluid
while the patient is sleeping. Dialysis can make things easier on the patient however it depends on
how much help your kidneys need as to which treatment you will need. Sometimes patients will

...Women who were denied abortions Felt more regret and anger and less relief and happiness than
women who had abortions ( Should Abortion ). This proves that being denied an abortion when
needed or wanted can have devastating consequences on a woman s mental health. Women in
these situations felt helpless and probably do not know what to do with their future. Finally,
abortions give women the opportunity to not deliver a baby when it is revealed that it has a
deadly or incurable disease. Fetuses can have anencephaly where the brain doesn t grow, limb
body wall complex where are the organs grow outside of the body, and Down Syndrome. Many
couples... don t have the resources, don t have the emotional stamina, don t have the family

This entails, women should have the opportunity to decide if they want to go through the mental
and physical exhaustion of having a baby with disabilities such as Down Syndrome or
anencephaly, both of these diseases also cost a plethora of money, something not all families have.
In conclusion, every one of these problems could have been solved with the access of safe abortion
clinics. Mothers shouldn t go to the extent of a clothes hanger to have an abortion, be mentally
traumatized from the pregnancy they do not want, and if parents don t want a disabled child that is

The Cosmological Argument
The Cosmological Argument
An important argument to try and prove the existence of God is the Cosmological Argument
brought on by observations of the physical universe, made by Saint Thomas Aquinas, a thirteenth
century Christian philosopher. The cosmological argument is a result from the study of the cosmos;
Aquinas borrows ideas from Aristotle to make this systematically organized argument. Aquinas first
point begins with the observation that everything is moving. Aquinas says that everything that
moves must be moved by another moving thing, which has to be moved by another moving thing
and so on. This cannot be infinite though, because consequently the motion of the series would
have no origin, and the origin of this series cannot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But David Hume, a Scottish philosopher, objected to Aquinas second point by arguing that if each
individual link in the chain of causes and motions can be explained then there is no need for an
additional explanation for the whole of the chain. The explanation of each part is enough of an
explanation for the whole itself. But defenders say that the discovery of the Big Bang theory would
be the beginning of the causes and motions in the universe and is not infinite, so infinite regress
would not be possible.
A third objection to the cosmological argument as a whole is that Aquinas insists that everything has
a cause; if that is true, then what caused God? There being an uncaused cause would be a
contradiction to Aquinas whole argument that everything has a cause yet God has no cause. But
Aquinas defends his argument by saying that only everything in our universe has a cause because
everything in our universe is a limited, dependent being. That still would require an uncaused,
neither finite, nor dependent being unlike anything in our universe, God. Critics also object that the
cosmological argument does not prove a loving and personal God, but Aquinas would probably
respond by stating that this wouldn t prove his argument is wrong, only that it has a limited
purpose. I think between the two arguments, Cosmological and Ontological, the cosmological

didn t like what was happening, Montresor hesitated but he did nothing to stop on what was
happening. He wanted revenge. The suspense is the confusion delay and danger. The next
important thing is suspense Be it so I said replacing the tool beneath the cloak, and again offering

Montresor was pretending to be Fortunato s friend until he got him to where he wanted him to be.
He was using him until he got him into a closet, and it worked. Montresor has been planning his

The Similarities Between Primates And Chimpanzees
Primates can be defined as an order of mammals that includes apes, humans, monkeys, lemurs,
tarsiers and lorises. According to the evolutionary history, originally primates evolved from their
ancestors who lived on trees. Today there are approximately 235 species of primates, and they all
range in their habitats and sizes. Thus, the biggest primateis lowland gorilla, whose weight is
around 180 kilos, while the smallest one is mouse lemur living on Madagascar. Its weight is only
30 grams. There are different classifications of primates offered by scientists. However the most
common and widely accepted is the division of all primates into two groups: the prosimians and the
anthropoids. The prosimians that are also called as primitive primates... Show more content on

The first arboreal theory was considered to be the dominant until it was question and other two
theories appeared. According to the arboreal theory, primate evolved in order to meet the needs
of arboreal life, which means a development of necessary senses or adapting already existing
senses to new life style. For example, since primates lived in the three dimensional world, they
needed a good stereoscopic vision that would allow them easily move through the environment.
Therefore, the orbits of the first primates had been changed in order to achieve stereoscopic
vision. Since the vision has become a primary sense, the sense of smell has reduced and, as a result,
the snout was shortened. Its adaptation of the primates to the environment allowed them to survive.
The second theory known as the visual predation theory contradict the first theory and claims that
all the features of primates mentioned above, including grasping feet and hands, orbital
convergence and the reduced claws, were developed as a result of pressure to forage for insects
and fruits in the forest during the night time. For example, a good orbital vision allows primates to
gauge the prey s distance without additional moving of the head. The third theory is the most recent
among all three theories. According to this theory the primates have undergone the adaptive

Ralph Waldo Emerson was born on May 25, 1803 in Boston, Massachusetts to Ruth and
clergyman William Emerson. In 1812, Emerson attended Boston Latin School. In 1817, at the
young age of 14 he started attending Harvard College and graduated in 1821.(A E Networks

Emerson entered the ministry and became an unwilling preacher at the Old Second Church. He
had already started to falter from his Christian faith before his young wife, Ellen Tucker, died
from tuberculosis in 1831 causing Emerson to resign from his position as pastor.(Academy of
American Poets) The year following his wife s death he traveled to Europe where he met Thomas
Carlyle, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and William Wordsworth, famous literary figures that inspired
who he would become.(A E Networks Television) After his return from Europe he settled in
Concord, Massachusetts in 1834 and started writing Nature which he published anonymously two
years later in 1836. He married his second wife, Lydia Jackson, in 1835. Emerson and his wife had
four children, two sons and two daughters. (Encyclopædia Britannica) On August 31, 1837 he gave
his famous speech, The American Scholar. He became a spokesman for Transcendentalism, a

of that time period . One of his most well known works Essays First Series is a series of essays

Wild Thorns Analysis
What are the various interactions between Palestinian Arab Muslims and Israeli Jews as portrayed
by Sahar Halifeh?
The thorns aren t there to produce roses, they re there to protect them. Wild thorns is a interesting
story about a man of Palestinian descent and his interactions with the Jews living in Palestine. This
story about a man named Usama is an intriguing look at how the Palestinian people interacted with
the Jews who were in governmental control of the region in which the story takes place. This story
also shows the growing contentious relationships that were growing between the Palestinian
muslims and Israeli Jews during the mid twentieth century. Even though some thought the muslim
citizens had brought it upon themselves, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He said that before the Jewish occupation of Palestine he was being paid 135 qurush for a days
work. He said that at that time life was not as expensive as it was at the time he was telling the
story. He then said that after the war when he went back to his to his employer, the employer
said that he would pay he 80 qurush for a days work. This interaction is a direct result of what
had happened to the Palestinians after the war that brought a major division between the muslims
and the jews. This is an example of the unfair treatment that the Israeli merchants had done to the
Palestinian work force. These interactions could be directly associated with the rise of jews
moving into the area described in the book. After several hearings in April of 1946 the Anglo
American Committee of Inquiry recommended that 100, 000 people of the jewish descent be
admitted to Palestine and that there should neither be a Arab state or a Jewish state. The influx of
jews into the same areas as the arabs makes sense of the increasing competition of jobs between
the two people groups which would only cause the divide between them to grow larger and

  • 2. New Media Literacy Essay When the word was first used, literacy had a very traditional meaning: the ability to read and write ( Literacy, 2011). Being literate was the norm, it was required for all and it distinguished race and class. However, as times change and culture emerges and grows, people acquire new knowledge, such as technology, that can very well be identified as literacy, or media literacy. As technology leads the 21st century, students are now expected to excel and master media literacy as well textual literacy (Jenkins, Clinton, Purushotma, Robison Weigel, 2006). This is because the meaning of the word literacy evolves into the set of abilities and skills where aural, visual, and digital literacy overlap (New Media Consortium as cited in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because technology is advancing everyday, teachers, administrators and parents should ascribe great value, money, time and/or effort to ensure that students are prepared to face the world with as much media literacy skills as possible to be full participants in society (Jenkins et al., 2006). To do this, educators and leaders must insure that there are countless resources to teach new media literacy, whether in school, after school programs or even at home. Teachers, parents, and after school caregivers all have a responsibility and a role to educate students and nurture their new media skills (Jenkins et al., 2006). Literature Review Why should educators consider adding new media literacies to curriculums? The answer is simple: new media literacies or skills emphasize social and communication skills (Jenkins et al., 2006). This new culture requires that students or participants in general be prepared and equipped as full participants having the social skills required to contribute and they must be culturally competent (Jenkins et al., 2006). In addition, participating in online communities, such as social network sites, intensifies or enhances certain properties not represented in face to face communications, such as persistence, searchability, exact copyability and invisible audiences (Boyd, 2008, pg. 2). Although these properties can change social dynamics, they give students an outlet for their creativity and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Importance Of The Land Of Opportunity In America Land of Opportunity for Everyone. The United States is a very diverse country, which makes it the most unique out of every other place in the world. What helps this wonderful country of opportunity become what it is to this day is because of the immigrants who traveled here. Coming from a family of immigrants I know first hand what my grandparents and parents had to go through to earn the life they gave me today. Immigrants are an important part in our society. • 4. The United States Supreme Court Acclaim for asserting the United States Supreme Court as a substantial participant in the American structure of government has been ascribed to the guidance of John Marshall as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1801 to 1835. By 1835, the Supreme Court had attained a level of equality with the prowess and prestige as that of Congress and the Executive that was not present before John Marshall was appointed to the position. Central to this development was the Court s adoption of the Constitution as its distinct reserve. Chief Justice John Marshall utilized judicial review to eliminate the Supreme Court from the socio political conflicts in government and to institute the rule of law based on the principles established in the Constitution of the Unites States. Marshall and his colleagues erected the Court s recognized power by effectively affirming an assertion to explain the Constitution and subsequently supplant the Constitution as supreme law in the commonplace sequence of arbitration and by the end of his judgeship firmly supplanted the Supreme Court s role in the U.S. system of government. John James Marshall came into this world on September 24, 1755 in a small cabin built of logs near a small rural community in Virginia known as Germantown. John was the first son born to Thomas Marshall and Mary Keith. His mother and father went on to have fifteen children giving John eight sisters and six brothers.1 In the beginning of the 1760s, the Thomas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Released on October 31, 1975 in the album A Night at the Opera, Bohemian Rhapsody became very popular, staying at the top of the UK Singles Chartfor nine weeks and by the end of January, had more than a million copies sold. Freddie Mercury, the sole writer of this song, never disclaimed the song s official meaning, but Brian May, the lead guitarist of the band, believes it is about his struggles in life and how he tried to get past society s standards, for the lyrics progress through the central character s understanding of the situations portrayed in the song.... However, those who are holding the judgement express no mercy, for then they respond with Bismillah! No we will not let you go . The seriousness of the condition at hand is also shown by the stern choir of voices striking the character with judgement. The song then transitions to a hard rock sound, with the drums and guitar unleashing powerful rhythms. This sound perfectly matches the character s reaction to their judgers, which anger and defiance. This can be seen from the lyrics So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye, So you think you can love me and leave me to die, Oh baby, can t do this to me baby, Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here . However, this doesn t last long, for after a short powerful guitar riff, the song shifts to a down tempo ballad. This leads to the character feeling resignation and complacency with the lyrics Nothing really matters, anyone can see, nothing really matters...to me . In the 18th century, the concerto was transformed into a viable instrumental genre to both demonstrate virtuosity as well as a cohesive character that embodied the natural. Though the series of changes from the Baroque concerto grosso to the Classical concerto were gradual and cannot be attributed to a single composer, the Piano ConcertoNo. 20 in D minor K. 466 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozartis a skillful representation of the genre in that era. In this concerto, for example, the opening orchestra tutti is not a first exposition, because it remains in the tonic throughout and does not contain the complete compliment of themes. Thus, this tutti serves as preparation for the soloist, who enters with a novel theme in measure 77. After the completion of the exposition in both D minor and F major by soloist and orchestra, there is a short transition (mm. 174 192) based upon the opening material leading into the tonally unstable development. The remainder of the first movement retains much of this format. As W.H. Hadow states, the form of the soloist s portions are thus comparable to sonata form, but the form of the whole is still governed by the ritornello. The different manifestation of sonata form in the genre of the concerto may lead one to believe that the form of the Classical concerto developed independently of other genres that exercise this form. In fact, K. 466, with its ritornello principle, bares close resemblance to the da capo aria. As the Classical concerto functions as a platform for virtuosic display for the soloist, similar to an aria for a vocalist, the form of the first movement of K. 466 is a result of the stylistic and functional demands of the concerto. In 330 A.D., The Roman Emperor Constantine I chose Byzantium to become the new Roman Capitol, he named it Constantinople. The site of Byzantium was originally created to serve as a trade point between Europe and Asia Minor but it was very helpful because of its strategic location along the Bosporus strait. A key significance of Byzantium is in the citizens of Constantinople and the rest of the Eastern Roman Empire who identified strongly as Romans and Christians for the first time ever. The Byzantine Empire would be able to last so long because the ineffective leadership and barbarian attacks that plagued the Western Roman Empire, did not really harm the Byzantine Empire due the west being a screener for the barbarians and the East having very strong leadership through this time. Through this time period, the Byzantine s were able to develop technology such as Greek fire and the counterweight trebuchet. • 26. Cause And Effect Of Climate Change Climate change is one of the biggest news headlines of today. While there are skeptics that believe that global warming is just a hoax, there are many undeniable phenomenons happening around the world. The effects of climate change, in the long run, will be catastrophic if it is left alone. In just the past two months, there have been four hurricanes that made landfall in North America, and a wildfire more aggressive than has ever been seen before, ripping through California, killing forty people and leveling almost six thousand structures. Millions of Americans are displaced due to these unusually aggressive storms and the fires raging throughout California. Arctic species have seen massive reductions in their populations, with less food to eat, and less mates to breed with. The toxicity of the air in urban cities and contamination of waters outside these cities is on the rise. If the world keeps dismissing the importance of climate change, there will be calamitous consequences for the future generations. The effects of climate change, if not fixed, will be Arctic ice melting, reduction in animal populations, habitats threatened, and the air toxicity and seasonal allergies to humans. The causes include the greenhouse effect and air pollution. In the past decade, Americans have seen global warmingin the headlines constantly. About 71 percent of American scientists say that global warming is happening now (Saad). According to Linda Saad, Forty five percent of Americans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The bright morning sun peeked over the Appalachian mountains to bid us farewell as we packed our belongings into the 2011 Chevy Cruze. Dew still perched on the delicate leaves of various summer flowers while we rode down the road towards Tennessee. My friend Sarah drove. Her fingers tapped the steering wheel in rhythm to the Carrie Underwood song blaring from the radio. It was the radio s job to keep us awake since we had left so early in the morning; however, it was not doing a good job as I fell asleep only twenty minutes into the ride. Sarah had to wake me up at the rest stop just outside of Roanoke, Virginia. Hey, Allyson, she called as she shook my shoulders, it would be nice if you woke up, so I could take a nap. I just mumbled an incoherent string of words in response. I can just drive right back to Pennsylvania. We don t have to take a road trip. That got me up. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) are the standard diagnostic tools used by psychiatrists and clinicians world wide. Perpetual revision and increased medicalization of mental disorders also creates a dilemma for diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. While French physicians consider ADHD a psychosocial condition rather than a biological, only 0.5% of French children are diagnosed with ADHD. Conversely, 11% of US children are diagnosed as well as prescribed drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall. The over diagnosis of child onset ADHD in the US also correlates with the rise of Ritalin prescription and abuse in school and college age adolescents (Mayes et al., 2008). Although physicians are working to implement greater scrutiny on false diagnoses of ADHD, there is still heavy misuse among the adolescent population and variability of doctor bias. The inconsistency in both reliable diagnostic and treatment consensus emphasize the imperative to implement stronger genetics based studies of psychiatric disorders. Such studies to pinpoint genes, gene products and eventually, neuro biological pathways related to mental disorders can elucidate focused diagnostic tests and effective treatments for mental health patients. Population based studies were among the first scientific studies to confirm the heritable nature of mental disorders. Since the 1970s, psychiatrists clinically observed mental disorders among family members and hypothesized their possible heritable tendencies. Such hypotheses could not be empirically proven until researchers began doing twin and family studies. Before the Lichtenstein et al. Education Inequality In Thailand Although gender and education inequality may be both gradually increasing while shifting up and down throughout the years, the adult literacy rate in Thailand has only been increasing since 2000. In 2015, only about four percent of Thailand s citizens aged fifteen and over were illiterate. This ends up positively contributing to a wide variety of social improvements, such as lower infant mortality rates and higher educationlevels for future generations. This is because a parent who went to school and learned to reads is more likely to do the same with their child, regardless of gender. The same goes for length of education as well the more education they received, the more education they will likely expect their child to experience. The Cosmological Argument The Cosmological Argument An important argument to try and prove the existence of God is the Cosmological Argument brought on by observations of the physical universe, made by Saint Thomas Aquinas, a thirteenth century Christian philosopher. The cosmological argument is a result from the study of the cosmos; Aquinas borrows ideas from Aristotle to make this systematically organized argument. Aquinas first point begins with the observation that everything is moving. Aquinas says that everything that moves must be moved by another moving thing, which has to be moved by another moving thing and so on. This cannot be infinite though, because consequently the motion of the series would have no origin, and the origin of this series cannot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But David Hume, a Scottish philosopher, objected to Aquinas second point by arguing that if each individual link in the chain of causes and motions can be explained then there is no need for an additional explanation for the whole of the chain. The explanation of each part is enough of an explanation for the whole itself. But defenders say that the discovery of the Big Bang theory would be the beginning of the causes and motions in the universe and is not infinite, so infinite regress would not be possible. A third objection to the cosmological argument as a whole is that Aquinas insists that everything has a cause; if that is true, then what caused God? There being an uncaused cause would be a contradiction to Aquinas whole argument that everything has a cause yet God has no cause. But Aquinas defends his argument by saying that only everything in our universe has a cause because everything in our universe is a limited, dependent being. That still would require an uncaused, neither finite, nor dependent being unlike anything in our universe, God. Critics also object that the cosmological argument does not prove a loving and personal God, but Aquinas would probably respond by stating that this wouldn t prove his argument is wrong, only that it has a limited purpose. According to the arboreal theory, primate evolved in order to meet the needs of arboreal life, which means a development of necessary senses or adapting already existing senses to new life style. For example, since primates lived in the three dimensional world, they needed a good stereoscopic vision that would allow them easily move through the environment. Therefore, the orbits of the first primates had been changed in order to achieve stereoscopic vision.
