The Gothic Theme in Dracula by Bram Stoker Essay
The Gothic Theme in Dracula by Bram Stoker
Bram Stoker s Dracula is a true Gothic novel that belongs on any gothic literature course. Focusing
in on the recurring themes, characters and settings used throughout the novel one sees how Dracula
has set the standard for Gothic literature today. The theme in Draculais that classic Gothic theme of
the epic battle of good versus evil. In this novel this is expressed in a very direct way, there is
never any question as to who is right and who is wrong. As it can be clearly seen the protagonists
on the side of good have many endearing qualities while the antagonists on the side of evil have a
pact with Lucifer and are of the purest evil. The main antagonist in this story, Dracula, has ... Show

Consider as well how the four men in the story risk their lives for that of Mina s. Bram Stoker
reveals his attitude towards the nature of Victorian society by making the evil side in this novel
very seductive. Even though the side of good is well aware of the harm the evil side can cause,
the seductiveness of the evil side tempts our protagonists on many occasions. For example when
Van Helsing has trouble bringing himself to stake the three women because of their physical
beauty and when Jonathan Harker nearly allows himself to be bitten by one of the women
because of how physically attracted he is to her. I felt in my heart some wicked, burning desire
that they would kiss me with those red lips. # Stoker comments on the nature of Victorian
society by showing how unacceptable it was to give in to those primal desires. This relates to the
struggle between good and evil between our heroes of Victorian society and the devilish vampires.
Vampires are in control of those evil, primal desires in the story and good people like Jonathan
Harker and Van Helsing must fight off these desires lest they lose their clean and pure Victorian
existences.
The characters in Dracula are very Gothic. Dracula is the most important antagonist in the novel.
Dracula is a very if not the most interesting Gothic character ever created. He like all vampires
casts no shadow and possesses no reflection. Dracula cannot die by the mere passing of time for he

Archetypes In As I Lay Dying
Epictetus said, It s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters. William Faulkner
explored this idea, among others, in his novel, As I Lay Dying, which follows the Bundren family
on their trek to Jefferson. Michael Arndt s screenplay, Little Miss Sunshine, explores similar
themes and follows the Hoover family on their road trip to California. In both cases, everything
during the journey goes wrong which tests the relationships of the family members. Carl Jung
applied the term archetype to literature because he realized that all people share similar experiences
in their respective cultures. Authors use archetypes so readers can relate to the characters in their
stories; such is the case with the characters in Little... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The broken clutch symbolizes the hardship that the Hoover family has to overcome in order to
foster closer relationships. It is a constant reminder of their financial problems, among other
problems, every time that they get into the car. The mechanic explains to the Hoover family that
As long as [they] keeps parkin it on a hill they will be fine (Arndt 37). Because it is hard to
always park the minibus on a hill, the family has to work together and push start the car every
time they want to get back on the road. The family turns this into a fun, positive activity which
brings them closer to each other. The clutch acts as Arndt s contemporary interpretation of Addie
s coffin in As I Lay Dying. The coffin is a symbol of all of the Bundrens problems. Arndt and
Faulkner also use roadside signs as symbols of how the trip is progressing. For example, on the
way to the pageant the Hoover family drives by a sign titled, Carefree Highway which
symbolizes how the problems they have overcome have made them a closer, happier family. This
contrasts the Bundren family, who pass a sign titled, New Hope. 3 mi. , which slowly fades away
as they continue past it (Faulkner 120). This symbolizes that the Bundren family is losing hope as
they continue their journey, with each problem causing the family to slowly fall

Vertigo Gaze
The gaze in the movie
Laura Mulvey, the British scholar, she puts forward the film argument combines with
psychoanalytic theory and the concept of male gaze in her article Visual Pleasure and Narrative .
Mulvey mentions that, In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split
between active / male and passive / female. The determining male gaze projects its phantasy on to
the female form which is styled accordingly. In their traditional exhibitionist role women are
whisper At and displayed, with their appearance coded for strong visual and erotic impact so that
they can be said to connote to be looking at ness. (p.715) In other words, Hollywood narrative
films use women in order to provide a pleasurable visual experience for men. The narrative film
structures its gaze as masculine. The woman is always the object of the reifying gaze, not the
bearer of it.

Transition to Democracy Essay
Since the initiation of the Third Wave of Democracy, several countries have attempted to form a
democratic system of governs. We take note that not all have succeeded. At the dawn of this era,
democracy was being applied to countries with no prior history of a governing body that was place
by the people for the people hence success of such a system could not be guaranteed because of the
innumerous variables that existed in each country. People being the highlighted factor of variance,
it may become easier to understand how countries such as Pakistan and Nigeria, both countries prior
to the Wave had no local governing machinery. Pakistan further endured a partition from India
which resulted in not only an instant religious and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Its branch of powers is separated in to two, where the executive power lies with the government
and the legislative power is delegated to the Spanish parliament. Due to this structure it is very
arduous for political figures in states and governments to abuse their power. The executive
power in Spain is given to the Council of Minister s, which is led by the Spanish prime minister.
The Prime Minister is initially nominated by the king where after he is required to obtain the
vote of the lower house of parliament, and finally the king appoints the prime minister. Spain s
legislature is elected directly. The Spanish legislature branch consists of the congress of deputies
and the senate whom serve for a period no more than 4 years. The senate is elected through bloc

Essay On The Grapes Of Wrath
From I to We The Great Depression was a time in history when almost everyone suffered. The
novel The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck depicts a family, the Joads, moving to California
because the bank had taken their home and land. Many families were moving away to try to find
work so that they could provide for their children. Families that were once one, later became two.
The Joad family wanted to stick together because they thought that was all they could do to get
through this unpleasant situation. Anybody who had anything gave help to those in need. These
times were when the Wallaces gave Tom food and helped him find a job, when the people at the
government camp gave aid to those who needed it, when Sairy and Ivy Wilson helped the... Show

waltz right over an git you some grocteries, an you bring the slip to me (Steinbeck 431). This
paragraph shows how the government was so good to the people who were in need of help.
Those who had something, tried to help those who did not have anything. Once the family got to
California, they soon realized how few jobs were available. They went all around looking for
work, but never found it. They heard about a government camp in Weedpatch. They arrived
there and found out that this is the place to be. The family went to sleep, and Tom awoke earlier
than the others. He met Timothy and Wilkie Wallace eating breakfast. They offered him some
food and Tom gladly accepted. After talking for a while, the Wallace s mentioned a job. We re
laying some pipe. F you want to walk over with us, maybe we can get you on (Steinbeck 397).
The Wallace s could have easily kept the job to themselves so they would get the money, but they
did not. This shows that they did what they could do for their fellow neighbor, even when times
were bad. Many families traveling to California would stop on the side of the road, a lot of times,
wherever there was water. The Joad family meet Ivy

The Importance Of Critical Pedagogy In Teaching
Introduction
Critical pedagogy entails a teaching method motivated through critical hypothesis along with
different drastic philosophies that aims at aiding students inquire and experiment speculated
domination alongside underpinning the dogmas and practices assumed to rule. It can also be
defined as a postulate and attempts of aiding students attain critical awareness. Besides, the writing
of critical pedagogy remains exceptionally expansive in fact and involves thick information. Truth
be told, the political point of view of critical pedagogy regarding the educational programs provides
a lot in making bounteous grants in the field. Furthermore, as the same number of creators see,
basic instructional method does not have an arrangement of unmistakable standards that builds the
way toward setting an integrated meaning on its premises quite difficult. All the same, the
execution of parts regarding critical pedagogy within the classroom environment can have vast
scale outputs in the showing procedure overall. Thus, it stands imperative to offer a short
examination of the writing on basic teaching method, a scrutiny of its centre standards as well as an
examination of the critique coordinated contrary to its suppositions.
Moreover, critical pedagogy has its underlying foundations in Paulo Freire, an individual broadly
thought as the inaugural theorist of basic teaching method (Freire Slover, 1983). Despite the fact
that initially Freire devoted his endeavours on matters

Social Class Educational Structure in Brave New World
Introduction
Social stratification, or dividing people into classes, was and is still prevalent in society in many
ways. In every form division acts as an inhibitor for what certain citizens can do, but it helps form
a stable class structure as there is little mobility. Namely, stratification is most evident in the various
realms of education: elementary, secondary, and post secondary. The opportunities of specific
classes to achieve feats in education is often extremely disproportionate (Benson,1989, p. 159)
leaving lower classes at the bottom of society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Brave New World Classes. Alphas, Betas, Gammas, and Epsilons, all of these common group
names make up the bulk of the class system in Huxley s Brave New World. Social stratification
prevails in this make believe society and is seen as a large contributor to the differing levels of
intellectual soundness of the different cast members. Citizens of Brave New World are
engineered in order to be either genius or dumb as a nail (Huxley, 1932, p. 25). Huxley (1932, p.
18) described the entire process as a major instrument of social stability for the community. By
depriving the lover classes of any intelligent prowess(opportunities) a secure society was forged in
the eyes of the Authorities. Differences in Education. In order to make the society even more
secure the leaders opened the doors of universities to the best and brightest that were decanted. I
found that the top schools, like Eton (Huxley, 1932, p. 148), in the book were only made available
to the most formidable thinkers. Such a system confirms my hypothesis that there was a vast
difference in just what chances different groups had at getting an education. Simply the fact that
these discrepancies exist demonstrates the power of social class in education. Differences in
opportunities. Social stratification affected education and many other aspects of society. While the

William Shakespeare s Hamlet And Macbeth
The use of supernatural has always been a popular yet successful choice of film makers and
writers. In Shakespeare s Hamlet and Macbeth, the ghost imitates the feelings of the protagonists
for the audience as well. Shakespeare s tragedies include supernatural in order to catch interest of a
reader which consists heroes with desires of the supernatural ending up in a tragedy. Through their
use of ghostand the supernatural, we can see the similarities and differences of the plays that will
help effectively for a wider understanding of the plays and its themes. Shakespeare starts Macbeth
with a supernatural scene with 3 witches as the evil. Hamleton the other hand, starts with a similar
style of use by including ghost of Hamlet s father in its story. However, in both plays,
differentiating between good and evil of the supernatural was not sure of the protagonists.
Moreover, the supernatural lead the heroes into pitfall of characters in both. The use of leading
the protagonists to a bad outcome is both present in these plays. In Macbeth, he won t feel the urge
to murder the king if the three witches didn t make him to such evil deeds, causing him to not
change his ways such as killing everyone in his path. Hamlet on the other hand leads the same
structure, where seeing the ghost of his father leads to a tragic fight in the end, losing his live. If
only he hadn t known that the throne was obtained through murder, things would have been in a

beginning of the human being to today. Through the years, art has evolved dramatically from stick
figures and two dimensional animals to three dimensional sculptures and intricate paintings. The
artwork featured at the Seattle Art Museum shows many different types of art and features several
different periods in which these artworks were created. Two pieces of art that stuck out the most at

closely shaped like a lima bean. The water of the pool, is made up of many different pieces of

of water within the pool, Robert used complimentary blues and greens together and slightly
swirled them to make it look close to how water moves. Each piece of the pools water fits
together like a tight puzzle. They are numbered so that the colors and shapes can be set together
perfectly while on display. In the center of the pool, is a large white ceramic splash . Robert
gave this piece curves and form to represent the splash of water as if someone was jumping into
the pool and creating a huge backsplash. The edge of Roberts Pool with Splash is created to
look like the cement barrier that contains the water of the pool. He formed each piece to look
like a block which forms the shape of the lima bean pool. These parts of his masterpiece do not

insects into groups, called Lepidoptera, along with moths. The name Lepidoptera comes from the
Greek words for scale (lepido) and wing (pteron). The scales on a butterfly s wings are actually
modified hairs arranged in rows. The scales deflect light energy, transmitting numerous bright colors

Washington s War Within A War Essay
Washington s war within a war
While it is true that wars are fought and won with weapons and selfless sacrifice, it is also true
that wars cannot be won on an empty stomach. Hunger can zap a solders moral, confidence, and
he can find himself lacking the energy to even aim his rifle. This is a real threat to any company,
or to any army. One might even say this could be a war within a war for the starving battalion
that faced such adversity. They would be faced with the loss of muscle tissue, the inability to
fight, think, let alone to defend a fort. Moral breaks down, some will desert, or commit mutiny as
they lose faith in their commanding officers. During war, food can be taken for granted, more
faith is put on the weapon you carry, the men you serve with. However, little thought is given to
how truly important food and clean water can be until you have none. When it is gone, it s all you
can think of, thoughts drift to warm meals, clean clothes, clear cool water. Then one s soul sinks
into depression, the feeling of defeat, the temptation to give up and surrender just for a taste of
some food. This is just the war that General George Washingtonand the continual army faced in
the winter of 1777 1778 at Valley Forge.
General Washington was face with the loss of his Army, through extremely low moral brought on
by lack of food, and other necessary supplies. The reason for such a hardship during the war was a
faulty supply line. On the 23rd of December 1777, Washington wrote

Mariama Ba And Sindiwe Magona
1. Introduction
The critical analysis of gender probabilities in the African context is not a new venture but a
significant discussion to the development of gender, cultural and feminist theorists. This study
investigates the limitations to empowerment Africa women face at the hands of patriarchal
societies, exacerbated by the oppression and subjugation employed by traditional, cultural and
religious norms within two different African countries, that is, Senegal and South Africa. The
research analyzes two novels by important women writers in African literature, Mariama Ba and
Sindiwe Magona. These two dedicated women writers examine the different ways in which
African patriarchy and religion broadly manifests itself regarding the position of women.
Mariama Ba`s novel So Long A Letter (1981) expresses the Islamic and African laws which core
existed in Senegal. As Layiwola (1998: 153) state, So Long a Letter narrates, in a personal

novel So Long A Letter sheds light to the need of African societies to be enabling for women who

stereotypes towards them. However, some African societies as an acknowledgement of Mariama
Ba`s style of writing and thematic concerns are still practicing religious and traditional norms that

Sometimes the actions of one individual can enormously impact on how society sees itself. 1960s

audience was influenced to think that a person is a person who deserves respect and equality no

Causes Of Good And Evil In Confessions
For years, people have continuously tried to figure out the causes of good and evil without
settling on just one theory. And it makes sense as to why people would want to find the root of
all good and evil, given that throughout mankind, good and evil has been prominent with
figures representing both sides. From Hitler to Mother Teresa, we see two very distinct sides of
the spectrum. There s Hitler who is responsible for the death of millions of Jewish people. Led
by racism, he was a ruthless killer and was also was the main cause for WWII. However, on the
other side, there s Mother Teresa, a nun and missionary who spent her whole life to helping the
disadvantaged. Plato, Augustine, and The Manicheans were just three of many philosophers who
came up with ideas regarding good and evil. In Phaedrus, Plato talks about the idea of a dual
natured soulbut Augustine, in Confessions, challenges that idea; Plato also describes the qualities
of evil which Augustine transforms to fit in with his own beliefs in Christianity. The Manicheans
talk about the journey from good to evil being led by external forces and Augustine challenges that
idea, as he takes on a more internal viewpoint. Star WarsIV: A New Hope, is a movie which has
parts of each of the three ideas, however the one I found to be more prominent in this particular
episode was the Platonian philosophy, represented by the character Han Solo.
When it comes to the idea of the dual natured soul, Plato believes that humans have

According to the general relativity theory, a sufficiently compact mass has the capacity to deform

compacted and compressed to the size of a Rubik s cube. This happens to the massive dying starat
the end of its life.
For nearly 200 years now, theorists have postulated the existence of black holes and now there is
strong evidence to support that most, if not all galaxies have black holes that are essentially
millions or even billions of times heavier than the sun (Volonteri, 2010). Coined in 1967 by the

Similarly, an outside observer will experience all processes on an object nearing the event
horizon as slowed down, and the emitted light will appear dimmer and redder due to the
gravitational red shift effect; as soon as the falling object reaches the event horizon, it becomes
so dim that it can never be seen. Black holes often form at the ends of the lives of massive stars
as these stars often collapse at the end of their life cycle, when all the sources of nuclear fusion
in a star are exhausted (Kaaret Ford, 1997). After forming, black holes have the capacity of
increasing in size by swallowing up mass from their environments such as nearby stars and fusing
with other black holes thereby creating super massive black holes whose mass exceeds several
million solar masses (Alexander, Smail, Bauer, Chapman, et al., 2005). Astronomers have reached a
general consensus that nearly all galaxies have super massive black holes at their centres (Cattaneo,

This method of research would be an inductive approach by establishing a main topic then
formulating a theory based on the research conducted.

This article depicts the relationship between the community and law enforcement. The location of
this study was conducted in Thailand, (Sahapattana Cobkit, 2016). The study was broken down into
four categories the demographic location, direct contact with law enforcement, law enforcement
performance and attitude, (Sahapattana Cobkit, 2016). The results of this study determined a direct
correlation between crime suppression and confidence in police actions, (Sahapattana Cobkit, 2016).

Essay on Evaluation of the Marketing Strategy of iPod
Evaluation of the Marketing Strategy of iPod
The product I have chosen to do my investigation on is the iPod with Video . I have chosen to do
this product as I know it reasonably well and have had a couple of iPod s since the release date in
2001. It is an extremely popular product worldwide not just because of its advanced technology,
but because it has become a fashion statement. I m sure its success will continue to increase and
that is why I have chosen it.
To continue with my investigation I will need to collect various information which, will help me
make final recommendations to the company. I will be using the two general types of research,
primary and secondary.

Other companies had released hard drive based music players but none of them compared to the
iPod. It was unique with its glistening white look and white ear buds. iPod almost wasn t released
by Apple as the creator, Tony Fadell, had offered the idea to Phillips and RealNetworks before
Apple.
One month after the domestic launch of iPod, it was launched in Europe followed by a series of
peripherals. Several companies were selling charging adapters, FM broadcasters and a range of
cases. By the end of 2001 Apple had sold approximately 125,000 iPod s.
In March 2002, a new 10 GB version of the iPod was released. Along with the new iPod came
software updates including several bug fixes and a new equalizer.
3 months later, in July 2002, a new 20 GB version was released with a major price cut of the 5 and
10 GB iPod. Many new features were added to the software. Also a change was made to the
hardware, where instead of a scroll wheel it was a touch sensitive click wheel.
A while later Apple released the iPod mini, a colourful little device that stored 1000 songs. It easily
was better than any other MP3 on the market at that time and everyone had to have one.
Next came the shuffle, a chewing gum packet sized iPod. This was the first without a screen on
click wheel.
Then the iPod Photo was released. An iPod with a huge memory, colour screen, which could store

Character Sketch Of Tolstoy
2 Tolstoy s Character. Tolstoy was a multi dimensional man. In his long career he had been a
teacher and educational theorist, a philosopher and social critic, a successful farmer and
paterfamilias, a soldier, and a prophet. Above all, however, he was a great artist, and it is on his
fiction that his fame at present rests. The literary career of this great writer of the Russian land
(as his contemporary Turgenev called him) may be divided into three parts: the early period of
literary apprenticeship (1851 63), the period of the great novels (1863 77), and the later period of
preoccupation with the message of his religious teaching (1878 1910). The works of the early
period may be regarded as the school in which Tolstoy taught himself to write. He isolated the
themes and developed the literary... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His account focuses heavily on both sides tactical successes and failures from maneuvers in
battle to how they handled occupied territory. Before the French surrender, Pierre s brush with
execution becomes a cutting satire of French bureaucracy, which functions so badly that Pierre is
nearly executed simply because a general was interrupted while he was deciding Pierre s
sentence. However, the Russians also become objects of Tolstoy s critique. He depicts
disorganization and a lack of professionalism on both sides. The French failures are not limited to
their ineffective bureaucracy. Since the battle of Borodino and the looting of Moscow, Tolstoy
writes, the French army had borne within itself, as it were, the chemical conditions of its
decomposition Napoleon and his generals seem to have good intentions they order their men not to
loot and treat the Russians they meet respectfully. However, the privation and lack of discipline in
the French army means that the foot soldiers eagerly and violently loot Moscow at their first

Koch Snowflake Investigation Angus Dally
Koch Snowflake Investigation Angus Dally
Background:
In 1904, Helge von Koch identified a fractal that appeared to model the snowflake. The fractal was
built by starting with an equilateral triangle and removing the inner third of each side, building
another equilateral triangle where the side was removed, and then repeating the process
indefinitely. The process is pictured below, showing the original triangleat stage zero, and the
resulting figures after one, two and three iterations.
Method:
Let Nn=the number of sides, Ln=the length of a single side, Pn= the length of the perimeter and
An= the area of the snowflake, all for the nth stage. Using an initial side length of 1, create a table
that shows the exact values of N_n,гЂ– ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consequently, the area of each of these triangle is 1/9 of the original triangles.
Therefore the total area added is:
Area added=3Г—1/9
=1/3
Therefore, to find the area of snowflake n=1, these two area ratios must be multiplied by the area
of the original triangle at n=0.
A_1=в€
љ3/4 (1+1/3)
A_1=в€
љ3/3
For snowflake n=2, twelve additional triangles are added onto the initial triangle, with side lengths
of 1/9. Consequently, the area of each of these triangle is 1/81 of the original triangles.
Therefore the total area added is:
Area added=12Г—1/81
=12/81
=4/27
Therefore, to find the area of snowflake n=2, this area ratio, as well as the previous two, must be
multiplied by the area of the original triangle at n=0.
A_2=в€
љ3/4 (1+1/3+4/27)
A_2=(10в€
љ3)/27
At n=3, following the previous pattern:
48 triangles with side length 1/81, and area 1/729 are added.
Area added=48Г—1/729
=16/243
Therefore, to find the area of snowflake n=3, this area ratio, as well as the previous three, must be
multiplied by the area of the original triangle at n=0.

Electric Blanket Advantages And Disadvantages
An electric blanket has an electrical heating device built in that is meant to be placed above the
bed sheet. In Commonwealth countries, however, it refers to an electric mattress pad that is kept
below the bottom bed sheet. They comprise a control unit that allows the user to adjust the heat
produced by the device. Larger size beds may even have two separate control units for both sides of
the bed. An electric blanketcan be useful to heat the bed to a certain level before sleeping to keep
the occupant cosy and warm. Typical low voltage electric blankets work on 12 24 volts and are
made of thin carbon fibre wires. The electric blanket was invented more than a century ago by
American inventor Samuel Russell, while the first recorded sale in the electric blanket market was
by the Samson United Corporation in 1930.

Personal Experience Of Abusive Relationships
Welcome to my blog, Perfect Love. Throughout my blog posts, I will discuss my personal
experience with an abusive relationship, how to realize that you are in an abusive relationship,
and how to leave. Aside from using my own personal experiences, I will also add credible sources
to my posts.
At some point in your life, you will meet someone and fall in love. For me, this experience
happened my junior year of high school as I met my boyfriend, John (names have been changed).
At first, everything was great. I was a cheerleader and he was a football player; the perfect
combination. As time went on, I began to notice him acting differently. He would call me names,
and treat me like the dirt under his shoe. However; I stayed because he kept reminding ... Show

He would have his fair share with other girls and would degrade me. The name calling then
turned into screaming arguments, leaving me in tears. If I did not do what he wanted, he would
make sure to make my life a living hell. I began to lose many great friendships because I was not
allowed to hangout with anyone. He would keep tabs on me all of the time. I was not allowed to
drink alcohol, go to parties, hangout with my family, or have any guy friends.
Now, I know what you are all thinking. Leah, why did you stay? Honestly, I can t really answer
this question. At the time, John made me feel like I could not do any better. He would tell me
that I was too ugly to ever find someone to love. And every time I did try to leave, he would
always find a way for me to stay. Whether it be texting me 100 times, or talking to me until I
agreed to take him back. Leaving can be more complicated than it seems.
According to The National Domestic Violence Hotline, the abused stay in domestic relationships
due to fear, embarrassment, low self esteem, love, and believing that the abuse is normal. For me,
these are all true.
Fear: I was afraid of what my life would end up being if John was not in my life. I was afraid of
what he would do if I actually did leave

Essay about Edward Witten s Work Led to a Revolution
Witten was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He is the son of Lorraine (Wollach) Witten and Louis
Witten, a theoretical physicist specializing in gravitation and general relativity.[3]
Witten attended the Park School of Baltimore (class of 68), and received his Bachelor of Arts
with a major in history and minor in linguistics from Brandeis University in 1971. He published
articles in The New Republic and The Nation. In 1968, Witten published an article in The Nation
arguing that the New Left had no strategy.[4] He worked briefly for George McGovern s
presidential campaign. McGovern lost the 1972 election in a landslide to Richard Nixon.

In the late 1980s, Witten coined the term topological quantum field theory for a certain type of
physical theory in which the expectation values of observable quantities encode information about
the topology of spacetime.[5] In particular, Witten realized that a physical theory now called Chern
Simons theory could provide a framework for understanding the mathematical theory of knots and 3
manifolds.[6] Although Witten s work was based on the mathematically ill defined notion of a
Feynman path integral and was therefore not mathematically rigorous, mathematicians were able to
systematically develop Witten s ideas, leading to the theory of Reshetikhin Turaev invariants.[7]
Another result for which Witten was awarded the Fields Medal was his (nonrigorous) proof in
1981 of the positive energy theorem in general relativity.[8] This theorem asserts that (under
appropriate assumptions) the total energy of a gravitating system is always positive and can be
zero only if the geometry of spacetime is that of flat Minkowski space. It establishes Minkowski
space as a stable ground state of the gravitational field. While the original proof of this result due to
Richard Schoen and Shing Tung Yau used variational methods,[9][10] Witten s proof used ideas
from supergravity theory to simplify the argument.

middle of the war saying Spain would join the war on the side of the Axis powers if Germany

Holistic Healthcare
Holistic Healthcare How Should Nursing Support Patients Rights?
Healthcare treatments are no longer being determined by set protocols for a particular diagnosis or
disease process. Increasingly more common, individualized, patient driven adaptations are being
implemented to improve adherence and compliance with treatment. Society as a whole is changing.
The influx of immigrants, cultural variations, and increased interest in natural healing therapies
within the U.S., has fueled a growth in the use of natural and alternative medicine practices. Holistic
healthcare lends a unique facet in making these adaptations to medical care conceivable. Through
employing the unique relationship formed between nurses and patients collaboration in care,
including the use of complementary and alternative medicine practices (CAM), can be easily
managed (Barnes, Bloom, Nahin, 2008). This alliance among nurses and patients in appraising all

Taco Bell Literature Comparison Essay
Introduction
Taco Bell, a United States fast food franchise, is expanding to other parts of the world. In 2011,
Taco Bell introduced its Mexican inspired cuisine to India by opening its first restaurant in
Bangalore. U.S. Taco Bell restaurants are known for their on the go, quick food experience. In
contrast, Taco Bell restaurants in India are a sit down, dining experience (Tandon, 2016). As the
franchise opened more locations in India, Taco Bell also created an Indian version of the Taco Bell
website. When comparing these two websites, there are apparent cultural differences between the
sites layout and content. This report will explore these differences and compare the two Taco Bell
websites based on three of Hofstede s cultural dimensions: individualism, indulgence, and
uncertainty avoidance. Examining Hofstede s current cultural comparisons of the U.S. and India
(Shah, 2013), we hypothesize that the U.S. Taco Bell website will rank higher than its Indian
counterpart in individualism and indulgence. For uncertainty avoidance, we believe that they will
have similar results. This report will discuss the literature review of these cultural dimensions, the
methods that are used to evaluate these cultural dimensions, the results of applying these methods
on these two Taco Bell websites, discussion of these result findings, a conclusion, and
recommendations for both the U.S. and Indian Taco Bell websites. Literature Review
The three cultural principles this report will

Norman s Auditory Hallucination
Auditory hallucination is still regarded as a definitive symptom of psychosis. As schizophrenic
sound is sourceless and the patient is not able to pinpoint where the source emanate from, within
or without. For Foucault schizophrenic voices function in an impossible space, signifying the way
in which the subject s spatiotemporal world is restructured in deep mental illness (Erb 55).
Foucault observed [Schizophrenics] hear voices in mythical space . . . in which, axes of reference
are fluid and mobile: they hear next to them, around them, within them, the voices of persecutors,
which at the same time, they situate beyond the walls, beyond the city, beyond all frontiers (qtd in
Erb 55). We can apply this observation to study Norman s case

Positive Aspects of Medical Marijuana Essay
Marijuana is the common name for a drug comprised of the leaves and flowering tops of the Indian
hemp plant, cannabis sativa, which can be smoked or eaten for unique feelings. The active
ingredient of marijuana, known as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is concentrated in the flowering
tops of the Indian hempplant. In the USA, the legality of marijuana, found to be medically useful
by some, has been a controversial topic for decades (Nahas 1). Today, the 5,000 year medical
history of cannabishas been almost forgotten.
Cannabis sativa has been used therapeutically from the earliest records to the present day. Although
the Chinese and East Indian cultures knew about the properties of this drug from very early times,

As the AIDS epidemic became prevalent, patients began to use marijuana to decrease the pain
caused by AIDS and AIDS related diseases (Randall and O Leary 200). These new medical uses of
cannabis led to wider folk experimentation. The use of marijuana in the symptomatic treatment of
convulsive disorders, migraine, insomnia, and dysmenorrhea was rediscovered. During Richard
Nixon s campaign on the drug war in the 1970 s, beginning with the establishment of the Office of
Drug Abuse Law
Enforcement (ODALE), marijuana was then confined to Schedule I under the Controlled
Substances Act. This classified marijuana as a drug that has a high potential for abuse, lacks an
accepted medical use, and is unsafe for use under medical supervision (Miller
103).
In November 1996, California endorsed a change in the state s drug laws that contradicted the Drug
Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Office of National Drug
Control Policy (ONDCP). California voters approved Proposition 215, an initiative that made
marijuana legally available as a medicine in the United States for the first time in two generations.
Under the new law, patients or their caregivers who possess or cultivate marijuana for medical
treatment recommended by a doctor would not be subject to criminal prosecution. The
recommendation may be either written or oral and doctors cannot be penalized by the state for
making it. A similar but more

The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn
Cameron Underwood Mrs. Greenlee Honors English III June 1st, 2015 Independent Novel
Project The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Knowledge Section Significance of Title When
considering the background behind the novel s title, not much is immediately apparent; for the
title is literally just the main character s name, and the affirmation that there will be some
adventuring going down somewhere within the story. Further analysis is not really possible
unless the name of the said protagonist is considered. The name Huckleberry does not refer to
any actual huckles, or berries, or even any actual huckleberries; it instead was a slang word in
the early 19th century typically used in self deprecation that roughly meant: small, unimportant
person. It was also used to describe anything that was just right for a task. Finn is a quite very
Irish masculine name that means white or Fair haired. So with that little tidbit, a clearer picture
of the title is gained. This book is about an insignificant blonde guy who will go an adventure of
sorts. And that s just what Mark Twain needed. Genre and Setting Huckleberry Finn is realistic
/historical fiction novel based on the pre civil war era in America. It also could be considered a
satirical novel, as a lot of the characterizations are done in an intentionally humorous way, such as
Huck s general country bumpkin style stupidity and mannerisms, along with Jim s old wives tales
that keep coming true, and the duke and the king s noble

20th Century Philosophy
This week s paper we were to research and identify three prevailing philosophical perspectives at
work during the 20th Century. To begin I will research the history of a few new tendencies in
contemporary philosophy. Then I will discuss the Tom Rockmore interpretation of such tendencies.
Tom Rockmore is Professor of Philosophyand a McAnulty College Distinguished Professor, Dr.
Rockmore s current research interests encompass all of modern philosophy, with special emphasis
on selected problems as well as figures in German idealism (Kant, Fichte, Hegel, Marx) and recent
continental philosophy (Heidegger, Habermas, Lukacs). He is continuing to explore the
epistemology of German idealism as well as the relation between philosophy and... Show more

The most practical of analytical philosophy also included Moore, and Carnape. The American
(neo) pragmatism philosophy is a philosophical movement that was given systematic terms by
Charles Sanders Peirce and William James and later taken up and revamped by John Dewey.
Pragmatists stress the practical purpose of knowledge as a way for acclimatizing to reality and
controlling it. Pragmatism concur with empiricism in its emphasis on the importance of experience
over a priori reasoning. However the truth had customarily been discussed in terms of
communication with reality or in terms of coherence pragmatism embraces that truth is to be
sought in the process of verification. Pragmatists translates ideas as means and plans of action
rather than as images of reality; more specifically, they are recommendations and anticipations of
possible conduct, hypotheses or forecasts of what will result from a given action, or ways of
organizing behavior(Answer,2010)
Between the continental and the analytic philosophy, being the two most significant tendencies,
barely any debate was taking place; this was due to the lack of knowledge, contempt, and mutual
lack of attention. In spite of this, the situation is changing slowly: especially American philosophers
like Taylor, Nagel, Rorty and others converse subjects in which until recently only

The Mortality Of Alzheimer s Disease
When you look around you see healthy people and sick people. Sometimes the sick go unnoticed
because their illness is not apparent to the naked eye. Alzheimer s disease is one of many diseases
that early on does not show any physical symptoms. On the other hand, Alzheimer s disease will
end in death. Below will define morbidity and mortality, describe Alzheimer s disease, and present
the rates of morbidity and mortality as they relate to Alzheimer s disease.
When someone is diagnosed with a disease, they usually first want to know what it is. The next
things that are usually looked at are morbidity and mortality. Most people who look at the numbers
related to these words do not understand what they mean. Morbidity is the presence of a disease.
Morbidity rate is the number given to a disease showing the percentage at which it affects a
population. On the other hand, mortality is related to death. The mortality rate, or death rate, shows
the percentage of a population that has died as a result of a particular disease. The typical person
does not research morbidity and mortality rates by those names, however they are looking for the
number of people diagnosed and the number of people who die from the disease.
Alzheimer s is a disease of the nervous system and is one of the most common forms of dementia.
It is characterized by memory loss and the loss of other intellectual abilities. These losses hinder
one s normal ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) such as

Cause And Effects Of Global Warming
Global warming is an increase of Earth s temperature throughout a period of time. Global
warming is a disease that is one of the root causes of Earth s illness. This invisible change has a lot
of drastic effects on mankind, wildlife as well as nature. The reasons to these destructions are
humans themselves. There are some very obvious ways to tackle the situation. Many of the
extraordinary weather changes since the 1950 s are recorded in the instrumental temperature record
which stretches out to the mid 19th Century while having thousands of years according to the
Paleoclimate Proxy Records [IPCC Climate]. Temperature across the whole world is predicted to
change throughout this century and continuing. The Earth s ability to tackle the emission of heat
trapping gases, as well as the amount of gases released will predict the magnitude of global climate
change[NASA].
Scientists are sure that global temperatures will continue to rise for decades to come, largely due
to greenhouse gases produced by human activities. 2.5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature
rise is predicted over the next century by a group of 1300 scientists of The Intergovernmental
Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) from the United States[IPCC]. Climate change will have different
effects on different regions depending on the adapting ability with time, of that region, said IPCC.
A 1 to 3 degree Celsius increase in global temperature will have deadly consequences in some
region and propitious

Definition of what comprised a Balanced Scorecard was sparse and focused on the high level
structure of the device. Simple causality between the four perspectives was illustrated but not
used for specific purpose. Kaplan and Norton s original paper s focus was on the selection and
reporting of a limited number of measures in each of the four perspectives (Kaplan and Norton,
1992). The paper suggested use of attitudinal questions relating to the vision and goals of the
organisation to help in the selection of measures to be used, and also encouraged the consideration
of typical areas of interest in this process. Kaplan and Norton s original work makes no specific
observations concerning how the Balanced Scorecard might improve the performance of
organisations; the implication is that the provision of

Stephen T. Asma s Book On Monsters
There is such kind of monsters, remain their appearance as a human, yet the things they do can
only describe as monstrosities. They are not monsters in books and literature, a fear of unknown
or sexual desires. People were, or still are facing actual brutal violence or psychological terror from
those monsters. More importantly, the monster being talked here is one of our kind. They are
human, yet described as inhuman , under the inhuman category of Stephen T. Asma s book On
Monsters, a bloody history, a dark past of humanity have been introduced as a monster. It is Khmer
Rouges infamous security prison S21: the representation of the massacre took place in Cambodia in
20th century and this kind of monster, unfortunately, is still relevant to the world, even till this day.
In just three years of its power in control, Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge turned the country of
Cambodia into a living hell. By 1976 approximately twenty five hundred prisoners had passed
through the bloody corridors of S21, and each year that followed saw increased numbers of tortured
prisoners, until they totaled around seventeen thousand by 1979, when the Vietnamese Army
liberated Phnom Penh. пј€8Asma) Most prisoners brought to S21 was innocent, they were brought
here only because the people in power believe they were enemies of the revolution or associated
with western culture. Ironically, the torture chamber used to be a school. People associate hope and

  • 2. The Gothic Theme in Dracula by Bram Stoker Essay The Gothic Theme in Dracula by Bram Stoker Bram Stoker s Dracula is a true Gothic novel that belongs on any gothic literature course. Focusing in on the recurring themes, characters and settings used throughout the novel one sees how Dracula has set the standard for Gothic literature today. The theme in Draculais that classic Gothic theme of the epic battle of good versus evil. In this novel this is expressed in a very direct way, there is never any question as to who is right and who is wrong. As it can be clearly seen the protagonists on the side of good have many endearing qualities while the antagonists on the side of evil have a pact with Lucifer and are of the purest evil. The main antagonist in this story, Dracula, has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Consider as well how the four men in the story risk their lives for that of Mina s. Bram Stoker reveals his attitude towards the nature of Victorian society by making the evil side in this novel very seductive. Even though the side of good is well aware of the harm the evil side can cause, the seductiveness of the evil side tempts our protagonists on many occasions. For example when Van Helsing has trouble bringing himself to stake the three women because of their physical beauty and when Jonathan Harker nearly allows himself to be bitten by one of the women because of how physically attracted he is to her. I felt in my heart some wicked, burning desire that they would kiss me with those red lips. # Stoker comments on the nature of Victorian society by showing how unacceptable it was to give in to those primal desires. This relates to the struggle between good and evil between our heroes of Victorian society and the devilish vampires. Vampires are in control of those evil, primal desires in the story and good people like Jonathan Harker and Van Helsing must fight off these desires lest they lose their clean and pure Victorian existences. The characters in Dracula are very Gothic. Dracula is the most important antagonist in the novel. Dracula is a very if not the most interesting Gothic character ever created. He like all vampires casts no shadow and possesses no reflection. Dracula cannot die by the mere passing of time for he is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Archetypes In As I Lay Dying Epictetus said, It s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters. William Faulkner explored this idea, among others, in his novel, As I Lay Dying, which follows the Bundren family on their trek to Jefferson. Michael Arndt s screenplay, Little Miss Sunshine, explores similar themes and follows the Hoover family on their road trip to California. In both cases, everything during the journey goes wrong which tests the relationships of the family members. Carl Jung applied the term archetype to literature because he realized that all people share similar experiences in their respective cultures. Authors use archetypes so readers can relate to the characters in their stories; such is the case with the characters in Little... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The broken clutch symbolizes the hardship that the Hoover family has to overcome in order to foster closer relationships. It is a constant reminder of their financial problems, among other problems, every time that they get into the car. The mechanic explains to the Hoover family that As long as [they] keeps parkin it on a hill they will be fine (Arndt 37). Because it is hard to always park the minibus on a hill, the family has to work together and push start the car every time they want to get back on the road. The family turns this into a fun, positive activity which brings them closer to each other. The clutch acts as Arndt s contemporary interpretation of Addie s coffin in As I Lay Dying. The coffin is a symbol of all of the Bundrens problems. Arndt and Faulkner also use roadside signs as symbols of how the trip is progressing. For example, on the way to the pageant the Hoover family drives by a sign titled, Carefree Highway which symbolizes how the problems they have overcome have made them a closer, happier family. This contrasts the Bundren family, who pass a sign titled, New Hope. 3 mi. , which slowly fades away as they continue past it (Faulkner 120). This symbolizes that the Bundren family is losing hope as they continue their journey, with each problem causing the family to slowly fall ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The novel The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck depicts a family, the Joads, moving to California because the bank had taken their home and land. Many families were moving away to try to find work so that they could provide for their children. Families that were once one, later became two. The Joad family wanted to stick together because they thought that was all they could do to get through this unpleasant situation. Anybody who had anything gave help to those in need. They went all around looking for work, but never found it. They heard about a government camp in Weedpatch. They arrived there and found out that this is the place to be. After talking for a while, the Wallace s mentioned a job. We re laying some pipe. F you want to walk over with us, maybe we can get you on (Steinbeck 397). It can also be defined as a postulate and attempts of aiding students attain critical awareness. Besides, the writing of critical pedagogy remains exceptionally expansive in fact and involves thick information. Truth be told, the political point of view of critical pedagogy regarding the educational programs provides a lot in making bounteous grants in the field. Social Class Educational Structure in Brave New World Social Class Educational Structure in Brave New World Nathan Dominique West Forsyth High School 5/4/2015 Social Class Educational Structure in Brave New World Introduction Social stratification, or dividing people into classes, was and is still prevalent in society in many ways. In every form division acts as an inhibitor for what certain citizens can do, but it helps form a stable class structure as there is little mobility. Namely, stratification is most evident in the various realms of education: elementary, secondary, and post secondary. The opportunities of specific classes to achieve feats in education is often extremely disproportionate (Benson,1989, p. 159) leaving lower classes at the bottom of society. ... Social stratification prevails in this make believe society and is seen as a large contributor to the differing levels of intellectual soundness of the different cast members. Citizens of Brave New World are engineered in order to be either genius or dumb as a nail (Huxley, 1932, p. 25). Huxley (1932, p. 18) described the entire process as a major instrument of social stability for the community. By depriving the lover classes of any intelligent prowess(opportunities) a secure society was forged in the eyes of the Authorities. Differences in Education. In order to make the society even more secure the leaders opened the doors of universities to the best and brightest that were decanted. I found that the top schools, like Eton (Huxley, 1932, p. 148), in the book were only made available to the most formidable thinkers. Such a system confirms my hypothesis that there was a vast difference in just what chances different groups had at getting an education. Simply the fact that these discrepancies exist demonstrates the power of social class in education. Differences in opportunities. Social stratification affected education and many other aspects of society. While the Alphas and Betas were playing obstacle golf the Epsilons and Gammas were busy battling the many ... Through their use of ghostand the supernatural, we can see the similarities and differences of the plays that will help effectively for a wider understanding of the plays and its themes. Shakespeare starts Macbeth with a supernatural scene with 3 witches as the evil. Hamleton the other hand, starts with a similar style of use by including ghost of Hamlet s father in its story. However, in both plays, differentiating between good and evil of the supernatural was not sure of the protagonists. Moreover, the supernatural lead the heroes into pitfall of characters in both. The use of leading the protagonists to a bad outcome is both present in these plays. In Macbeth, he won t feel the urge to murder the king if the three witches didn t make him to such evil deeds, causing him to not change his ways such as killing everyone in his path. Each piece of the pools water fits together like a tight puzzle. They are numbered so that the colors and shapes can be set together perfectly while on display. In the center of the pool, is a large white ceramic splash . Robert gave this piece curves and form to represent the splash of water as if someone was jumping into the pool and creating a huge backsplash. The edge of Roberts Pool with Splash is created to look like the cement barrier that contains the water of the pool. He formed each piece to look like a block which forms the shape of the lima bean pool. These parts of his masterpiece do not have the glazy appearance that the water pieces give. The Pool with Splash by Robert Arneson really shows and represents how a pool in someone s backyard would look on a hot summer day. First, butterflies are insects with wings made of colorful scales, a curled up mouthpart called a proboscis, and clubbed antennae, with thick ends like baseball bats. Butterflies are part of an insect order, a category level entomologists (people who study insects) use to organize insects into groups, called Lepidoptera, along with moths. The name Lepidoptera comes from the Greek words for scale (lepido) and wing (pteron). The scales on a butterfly s wings are actually modified hairs arranged in rows. • 16. Washington s War Within A War Essay Washington s war within a war While it is true that wars are fought and won with weapons and selfless sacrifice, it is also true that wars cannot be won on an empty stomach. Hunger can zap a solders moral, confidence, and he can find himself lacking the energy to even aim his rifle. This is a real threat to any company, or to any army. One might even say this could be a war within a war for the starving battalion that faced such adversity. They would be faced with the loss of muscle tissue, the inability to fight, think, let alone to defend a fort. Moral breaks down, some will desert, or commit mutiny as they lose faith in their commanding officers. During war, food can be taken for granted, more faith is put on the weapon you carry, the men you serve with. However, little thought is given to how truly important food and clean water can be until you have none. When it is gone, it s all you can think of, thoughts drift to warm meals, clean clothes, clear cool water. Then one s soul sinks into depression, the feeling of defeat, the temptation to give up and surrender just for a taste of some food. This is just the war that General George Washingtonand the continual army faced in the winter of 1777 1778 at Valley Forge. General Washington was face with the loss of his Army, through extremely low moral brought on by lack of food, and other necessary supplies. The reason for such a hardship during the war was a faulty supply line. On the 23rd of December 1777, Washington wrote ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Mariama Ba And Sindiwe Magona 1. Introduction The critical analysis of gender probabilities in the African context is not a new venture but a significant discussion to the development of gender, cultural and feminist theorists. This study investigates the limitations to empowerment Africa women face at the hands of patriarchal societies, exacerbated by the oppression and subjugation employed by traditional, cultural and religious norms within two different African countries, that is, Senegal and South Africa. The research analyzes two novels by important women writers in African literature, Mariama Ba and Sindiwe Magona. These two dedicated women writers examine the different ways in which African patriarchy and religion broadly manifests itself regarding the position of women. Mariama Ba`s novel So Long A Letter (1981) expresses the Islamic and African laws which core existed in Senegal. Stockett wrote with a purpose of entertainment through an informing message of equality and self awareness. The target audience was influenced to think that a person is a person who deserves respect and equality no matter their race, gender and or beliefs . • 19. Causes Of Good And Evil In Confessions For years, people have continuously tried to figure out the causes of good and evil without settling on just one theory. And it makes sense as to why people would want to find the root of all good and evil, given that throughout mankind, good and evil has been prominent with figures representing both sides. From Hitler to Mother Teresa, we see two very distinct sides of the spectrum. There s Hitler who is responsible for the death of millions of Jewish people. Led by racism, he was a ruthless killer and was also was the main cause for WWII. However, on the other side, there s Mother Teresa, a nun and missionary who spent her whole life to helping the disadvantaged. Plato, Augustine, and The Manicheans were just three of many philosophers who came up with ideas regarding good and evil. In Phaedrus, Plato talks about the idea of a dual natured soulbut Augustine, in Confessions, challenges that idea; Plato also describes the qualities of evil which Augustine transforms to fit in with his own beliefs in Christianity. The Manicheans talk about the journey from good to evil being led by external forces and Augustine challenges that idea, as he takes on a more internal viewpoint. Star WarsIV: A New Hope, is a movie which has parts of each of the three ideas, however the one I found to be more prominent in this particular episode was the Platonian philosophy, represented by the character Han Solo. According to the general relativity theory, a sufficiently compact mass has the capacity to deform spacetime thereby forming what is commonly known as a black hole, a point around which the gravitational force is too strong. Imagine a giant building, a skyscraper for example, being compacted and compressed to the size of a Rubik s cube. This happens to the massive dying starat the end of its life. For nearly 200 years now, theorists have postulated the existence of black holes and now there is strong evidence to support that most, if not all galaxies have black holes that are essentially millions or even billions of times heavier than the sun (Volonteri, 2010). Coined in 1967 by the American Physicist John Arichbald Wheeler, the term... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Precisely, an object falling into a black hole appears to slow down as it draws nearer to the event horizon but never really reaches it, due to the gravitational time dilation effect (Nrumiano, n.d). Similarly, an outside observer will experience all processes on an object nearing the event horizon as slowed down, and the emitted light will appear dimmer and redder due to the gravitational red shift effect; as soon as the falling object reaches the event horizon, it becomes so dim that it can never be seen. Black holes often form at the ends of the lives of massive stars as these stars often collapse at the end of their life cycle, when all the sources of nuclear fusion in a star are exhausted (Kaaret Ford, 1997). After forming, black holes have the capacity of increasing in size by swallowing up mass from their environments such as nearby stars and fusing with other black holes thereby creating super massive black holes whose mass exceeds several million solar masses (Alexander, Smail, Bauer, Chapman, et al., 2005). In the late 1980s, Witten coined the term topological quantum field theory for a certain type of physical theory in which the expectation values of observable quantities encode information about the topology of spacetime.[5] In particular, Witten realized that a physical theory now called Chern Simons theory could provide a framework for understanding the mathematical theory of knots and 3 manifolds.[6] Although Witten s work was based on the mathematically ill defined notion of a Feynman path integral and was therefore not mathematically rigorous, mathematicians were able to systematically develop Witten s ideas, leading to the theory of Reshetikhin Turaev invariants.[7] Another result for which Witten was awarded the Fields Medal was his (nonrigorous) proof in 1981 of the positive energy theorem in general relativity.[8] This theorem asserts that (under appropriate assumptions) the total energy of a gravitating system is always positive and can be zero only if the geometry of spacetime is that of flat Minkowski space. Healthcare treatments are no longer being determined by set protocols for a particular diagnosis or disease process. Increasingly more common, individualized, patient driven adaptations are being implemented to improve adherence and compliance with treatment. Society as a whole is changing. During Richard Nixon s campaign on the drug war in the 1970 s, beginning with the establishment of the Office of Drug Abuse Law Enforcement (ODALE), marijuana was then confined to Schedule I under the Controlled Substances Act. • 46. The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn Cameron Underwood Mrs. Greenlee Honors English III June 1st, 2015 Independent Novel Project The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Knowledge Section Significance of Title When considering the background behind the novel s title, not much is immediately apparent; for the title is literally just the main character s name, and the affirmation that there will be some adventuring going down somewhere within the story. Further analysis is not really possible unless the name of the said protagonist is considered. The name Huckleberry does not refer to any actual huckles, or berries, or even any actual huckleberries; it instead was a slang word in the early 19th century typically used in self deprecation that roughly meant: small, unimportant person. It was also used to describe anything that was just right for a task. Finn is a quite very Irish masculine name that means white or Fair haired. So with that little tidbit, a clearer picture of the title is gained. This book is about an insignificant blonde guy who will go an adventure of sorts. And that s just what Mark Twain needed. Genre and Setting Huckleberry Finn is realistic /historical fiction novel based on the pre civil war era in America. It also could be considered a satirical novel, as a lot of the characterizations are done in an intentionally humorous way, such as Huck s general country bumpkin style stupidity and mannerisms, along with Jim s old wives tales that keep coming true, and the duke and the king s noble ... Pragmatism concur with empiricism in its emphasis on the importance of experience over a priori reasoning. However the truth had customarily been discussed in terms of communication with reality or in terms of coherence pragmatism embraces that truth is to be sought in the process of verification. Alzheimer s disease is one of many diseases that early on does not show any physical symptoms. On the other hand, Alzheimer s disease will end in death. Below will define morbidity and mortality, describe Alzheimer s disease, and present the rates of morbidity and mortality as they relate to Alzheimer s disease. When someone is diagnosed with a disease, they usually first want to know what it is. The next things that are usually looked at are morbidity and mortality. Most people who look at the numbers related to these words do not understand what they mean. Morbidity is the presence of a disease. Global warming is a disease that is one of the root causes of Earth s illness. This invisible change has a lot of drastic effects on mankind, wildlife as well as nature. The reasons to these destructions are humans themselves. There are some very obvious ways to tackle the situation. Many of the extraordinary weather changes since the 1950 s are recorded in the instrumental temperature record which stretches out to the mid 19th Century while having thousands of years according to the Paleoclimate Proxy Records [IPCC Climate]. Temperature across the whole world is predicted to change throughout this century and continuing. The Earth s ability to tackle the emission of heat trapping gases, as well as the amount of gases released will predict the magnitude of global climate change[NASA]. Scientists are sure that global temperatures will continue to rise for decades to come, largely due to greenhouse gases produced by human activities. 2.5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature rise is predicted over the next century by a group of 1300 scientists of The Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) from the United States[IPCC].
