The Caste System By Mashasweta Devi
Please don t play your games with a helpless poor girl declared Dhowli. The Misra boy leaned in
closer to her replying, I m not playing games. Dhowli then shouted back You ll leave after you
tire of the game, and what will become of me? Am I to be like Jhale? No, deota, not that. (238). I
m hesitate to keep reading after this line thinking to myself how I feel sorry for Dhowli and who
she is going to become since getting pregnant with a Misra boy who is dominant in the caste
system. Dhowli creates an ambitious, courageous, and philosophical figure in the short story
Dhowli by Mashasweta Devi. In the short story the caste system is well defined showing of social
stratification of two opposite levels of the social chain in India. To an American reader the
foreignness of how India treats single mothers is how this short story stands out. Dhowli plays
the role of an untouchable that is very poor who gets pregnant by a Misra boy, which is on the
top of the caste system. Dhowli and her mother work on the Misra boy s family s land doing the
worst chores for the littlest about of millet and grain for Dhowli and her mother to live off of. The
chores consist of sweeping the garden, while managing the wind, and tending to the goats. The
word about Dhowli s pregnancy spreads through the village rapidly. When Dhowli goes outside she
gets stares and has to watch her every move since she is an untouchable and people do horrible
things to untouchables. When the Misra s family

Reflection About Divorce
Divorce is difficult on the children involved. When my parents finalized their divorce, it was
decided that for the majority of the summer we would stay with our mother. The divorce
occurred when my brothers and I were very young. My mother lived in a small, unremarkable
town named Evart that is north of Lansing. Our grandmother lived in the outskirts of nearby
Reed City. We spent most of our time during the summer at her cramped little trailer. The trailer
she lived in was on a decently sized plot of land. Her home was situated on a hill that leveled out
quickly as the path led to the road. The yard was expansive with hard brown grass covering a
small portion with dirt covering the rest. On one side of the trailer was a large red barn with
chipped paint. On the other side was an old brown camper that held two beds and an old
television with an antenna resting on the top. There was no backyard as the trailer was a few
feet from a wooden fence that had barbed wire across the top to stop the neighbor s horses from
entering the property. The camper is where my brother and I slept while with my grandmother.
The property where my brother Sabastian and I stayed at shaped some of the ways my personality
developed. When our mother left us at my grandmother s she would take my oldest brother
Andrew with her, leaving my older brother Sabastian and I with our grandma. We were mostly
independent; we were not allowed in the house so we roamed the property playing with the dogs

Feminism Is A Very Loaded Word
Feminism is a very loaded word. Many people have their own definition for it. Generally, it is
defined as equality between men and women. Women and men should have equality within the
house and as mothers and fathers. Children rely much on mothers because of the reproductive labor
that is traditionally done by them. As such, they need to be included in such a discussion.
Within a household, women and men, mothers and fathers, have different roles and responsibilities,
much of which are based on the person s gender. Typically, women or mothers are responsible for
the emotional, social, and physical well being of her family (Lober 80), most of the hands on
family work (Lorber 81), and keep up of the house. The men or fathers are usually seen as the
bread winners of the family. Due to this and the work they do outside of the house, men usually
have little to no responsibilities to the family and within the home. It is not unusual for women to
clean the house, make sure the children are well taken care of, and cook while the man, or father,
is at work. When he gets back home, after work, it is expected for him to relax and unwind.
Although they are a couple with similar obligations, the divide of them is not equally distributed
among the two and offer either one different results. Not only is the work that is done within the
house hold unequal, in favor of the man, women s work is also invisible and usually unpaid. Both
women who stay at home or work both have

Finding A Meeting At Fit My Schedule
Finding a meeting to fit my schedule was challenging. Most of the meetings were too late and the
times were difficult for me to attend. I decided to attend the overeater anonymous; this was the
only meeting that was open and accommodating to fit my schedule. My motivation to attend this
meeting was to have an understanding of what other people are facing when they are fighting an
addictive behavior or habit. When I listened to people talking about their issues and their
experiences of t overeating; or how they maintain their diet or prevent the problem from re
occurring. I will have a willingness to change my own diet. I believe that the meetings are

New Classics of the Horror Film Genre Essay
Dracula. Frankenstein. Godzilla. These monsters no longer strike fear into the hearts of viewers
as they once did. Formerly the villains of the classic monster movie, these relics, who now
represent all that is archaic in horror film history. The monster movie of the past makes way for
the thriller or slasher movie of the present, while the monster villain gives its role to the deranged,
psychotic serial killer. Friday the 13th series, Nightmare on Elm Street, Copycat and Seven have
become the new classics in the genre of the horrorfilm. With films like The People Under the
Stairs, Nightmare on Elm Street, and New Nightmare, Wes Craven has proven himself to be a
master of the creation of modern horror films.

Liver alone?! When none of the others laugh, Stu s smile fades and he remarks in an incredulous
tone, Liver alone. It was a joke. While Stu s friends may not be able to see past the joke s tactless
nature to its humor, I laugh each time Isee the film again.
Not only do the characters not take themselves seriously, they also don t take horror movies
seriously. A day after the first murders take place, Sidney Prescott receives a cryptic phone call.
However, she is not frightened because she believes the caller to be one of her own friends
Randy, a movie lover, calling to harass her. The mysterious caller asks her why she doesn t like
horror films and she replies, What s the point? They re all the same: some stupid killer stalking
some big breasted girl who can t act and is always running up the stairs when she should be going
out the front door. It s insulting. As an audience member, I realize that this skeptical and often
accurate view of horror movies is a message directly from the film s writer and director (Riptov 86).
Later in the film, when Sidney suggests that the killer might still be on the loose, her best friend
Tatem replies, Don t go there, Sid. You re starting to sound like one of those Wes Carpenter
flicks. As the audience, we get a laugh out of this statement because not only do we know that
Tatem has misnamed Wes Craven, we also know this is a Wes Craven flick. These scenes are like
inside jokes for the viewers;

Analysis of Intra-Asia Market
Chapter 4: Findings and Discussions
In the first section of this chapter, the interview result is being analysed. Following that, the
research done in phase 1 and the interview results gathering in phase 2 is combined to formulate the
Opportunities, threats and uncertainties in Intra Asia container trade. Finally in the last section of
this chapter, we will forecast the future outlook of Intra Asia for the next five years.
4.1 Analysis of Intra Asia Market
We had tailored our interview questions to gather professional opinions on the future outlook of
Intra Asia and Intra Asia container shipping and how they could impact and affect the shipowners
and operators (Appendix D).
Based on the interviews results (Appendix E) we had gathered, 80% of the respondents believe
that the current shipping market is now in its recovery from the longest downturn in three
decades in the shipping industry. It is largely due to the cause of overcapacity of ships in the
market that have depressed freight rates since the end of a shipping boom in 2008 (Shipping
Industry sees an end to five year downturn, 2014). The current recovery seem to be fragile in
Europe, though it is gaining traction in the US and UK, while emerging market is showing signs of
slow growth (Howard, 2014). All the main shipping segments remain heavy on the supply side,
causing great volatility in freight rates (Figure 10). Fortunately, the industry has now improved its
ability to apply counter balancing measures that had

Marx s Term For Capitalist
Bourgeoisie: Page 10; Marx s term for capitalist, those who own the means of production.
The food production companies have accentually bought the government. If they come up with a
plan to produce more food, no matter how harmful it may be to the consumer, the government will
not step in to protect the citizen of Americans. As the bourgeoisie owns the industry, this fact has
been proven within the video of Food Inc. What is astonishing is that a company was actually
able to get a patent on life. How can a company be allowed to monopolize an entire industry?
That is depriving people of their basic human right of life, to eat healthy food, food that has not
been modified by harmful hormones or genetics. Several of the food production companies give
jobs to illegal immigrants and once their services are no longer needed, then the heads of these
companies call immigration to have them arrested and deported back to their home country. This in
turn saves the company money because they do not have to pay out anything for unemployment
wages for laying the employees off for a period of time. The food industry has really become the
bourgeoisie of this century.
Proletariat: Page 10: Marx s term for the exploited class, the mass of workers who do not have the
means of production.
In this case, this class of workers is the farmers and the people who work in the food production
plant. The farmers are forced to purchase seed from a company, which sells nothing expect GMO
seed.

Empirical Differences Between Agile And Devops
Empirical differences between Agile and DevOps
With the increased development of software applications, increased the demand for principles in
order to maintain quality, flexibility, cost control and maintenance. There are several models of
software development, that describes the approaches to a variety of tasks or activities that takes
place during the development process. In most of the traditional IT process, the collaboration
between the developer teams and the operational teams is minimal and sometimes there would be
no communication, which resulted in various issues like system works in test and doesn t work in
production environment . To overcome this issue, various modern methodologies are developed. In
this paper, comparison of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An agile project is developed in iterations, which is reviewed and critiqued by a project team.
Usually, these project teams includes representatives from the client business and the employees of
the organization. Each iteration has a time period defined with a set of goals.
Based on the properties of iteration some organizations term iteration as sprint, all sprints are
iterations but not otherwise. Sprint is a time boxed i.e., it is finished on the planned date and not

of the software development challenges, a good project team should always remember that
requirements would change as they design and develop. The team should be clever enough to adopt
the changes with minimum disruption irrespective of which methodology is followed. The project

Ambiguity In Early Adulthood
Ambiguity means that an individual has both male and female genitalia. Boys can appear to be
male while having female genes and hormones. Girls can seem like a girl while harboring male
genes and hormones. This can make it very hard for someone to identify with one sex or the
other. There are roughly twenty four disorders that can lead to this kind of confusion. They are
called Disorders of Sexual Development or DSD s. Many of these disorders are rare; however,
some of them are relatively common. They can be as common as having twins or red hair. Some
DSD s can be harmful to your health. Testosterone is the determining factor in whether a fetus
forms as a maleor female. Genital development takes place in the womb. Surprisingly,... Show more

Some of them use an alternative like the bathroom in the nurse s office. Sex assignment surgeries
can actually damage the sensitive genital tissues. Thankfully, treatment has greatly improved
throughout the previous decade. Family involvement in the medical care of the child is now
valued. An infant or fetus will heal much faster than a child or adolescent. This fact supports the
method of giving infants and fetuses sex assignment surgeries. Parents usually make the decision
to give their infant or fetus sex assignment surgery to avoid bullies and harassment. Because they
are influenced by their mother s hormones, infants can have swollen genitals upon birth. They
will eventually shrink back down. Not all DSD s are apparent at birth because they sometimes
just affect the internal organs. It can sometimes be hard for people that were born with ambiguous
genitalia to find love. They have to find someone that is more worried about their soul than their
genitalia. In some countries, they can t marry their love because they are considered to be of the
same sex. Despite what sex they identify themselves as; they are just out of luck. Some DSD s are
hereditary. Hormone therapy can bring about sex

The Importance Of Interstate Commerce
Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution states that Congress shall have power to regulate
commerce with foreign nations, among the several states, and with the Indian Tribes (Epstein, et.
al., 2017). Congress can regulate the channels of interstate commerce and has the authority to
regulate and protect the instrumentalities of interstate commerce, and persons or things in interstate
commerce. Congress has the power to regulate activities that substantially affect interstate
commerce (Epstein, et. al., 2017).
The hypothetical case of United States v. Bates details the appeal and controversy of Interstate
Commerce filed by Norman Bates, owner of Eros Lodge and Eros Bar and Grill located in the
city of Utopia in the State of Grace. Bates is concerned how his business could be affected by
having same sex couple customers. Bates is not only worried about how profits could decrease,
he also believes that homosexuality is immoral. He believes that many of his regular customers
would not return or customers would be angry about same sex couples being present during their
romantic getaway at the Eros Lodge. The Public Administration Equal Access Act forbids
discrimination regarding sexual orientation in places such as those owned by Norman Bates. The
Equal Access Act applies to any business whose daily operations affect interstate commerce. The

History of the Fbi Essay
History of the FBI
The Federal Bureau of Investigation was founded in 1908 when the Attorney General appointed an
anonymous force of 34 Special Agents to be investigators for the Department of Justice. Before
that, the DOJ had to borrow Agents from the U.S. Secret Service. In 1909, the Special Agent Force
was renamed the Bureau of Investigation, and after countless name changes, it became The Federal
Bureau of Investigation in 1935.
When the FBI was established, there weren t an abundance of federal crimes, so it investigated
criminal acts that dealt with national banking, bankruptcy, naturalization, antitrust, peonage, and
land fraud. In June of 1910, the FBI grew larger because the Mann Act (Made it a crime to

Around this time, Americans feared the invasion of Communism, which triggered the FBI to
investigate people within the U.S. whom were suspected of sabotage and undermining Democracy
in the name of Communism.
The FBI s role in fighting crime grew yet again after the Korean war. On March 14, 1950, the
FBI began its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List to further increase the FBI s capacity to capture
exceptionally dangerous criminals. Many advances in Forensic Sciences helped the FBI to
become even more capable to assist local and state law enforcement agencies to catch criminals.
By this time the number of FBI agents had made a steady climb to about 6,200, and in 1957 the
FBI s budget started to rapidly increase.
In the 1960s, civil rights and organized crime became major concerns of the FBI, and
counterterrorism, drugs, financial crime, and violent crimes in the 1970s. During the 60 s,
Congress passed many new federal laws for the FBI to combat civil rights violations,
racketeering, and gambling. Some of these new laws were the Civil Rights Acts of 1960 and
1964; the 1961 Crimes Aboard Aircraft Act; an expanded Federal Fugitive Act; and the Sports
Bribery Act of 1964. By the end of the 1960s, the FBI had 6,703 Special Agents, 9,320 Support

Killer Whales Should Not Be Kept in Captivity Essay
Imagine if the world you lived in, the space you breathed in, and the freedom you played in were

heads out of the water and look around, and they can also dive to as much as a hundred feet.
These social animals live in pods and stay with them for their whole lives. They are so family

an enormous amount of stress on them as they are being ripped away from their families. The
best way to capture the whales is by using the drive method. This method is used by separating
the whales as best as they can from their families, luring them into shallow water, and then
containing them in nets. Once they are captured the whales are at high risk from dehydration as
they are out of water for large periods of time. The largest capture of orcas took place on August
8th, 1970, by Griffin and Goldsberry. During these captures whalers had to deal with many deaths,
usually with the calves. The calves were so scared about the nets that they drowned themselves
trying to get back to the families. Whaler John

The Theme Of Murder In Macbeth
Shakespearean Murder Blood, death, and violence; these are just a few words that go along with
a way of death known as murder. It s one of the more common ways of dying and is frequently
seen on the news and social media. As such, people always seems to take an interest in this topic.
There s a mysterious attraction to the subject of murder, whether in a mystery book, on television
shows, or simply mentioned in a news article. What makes a death murder, though? Murder, as
defined by Oxford Dictionaries, is the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by
another. Many simply define it as taking someone else s life. In Macbeth, William Shakespeare
illustrates the many forms of murder and establishes how it is wrong. One of the more interesting
parts of this way of death is the motive, or reason, people choose to murder one another. The
actual interest itself lies in the main four reasons for murder; to gain power, exact revenge, dispose
of any opposition or witnesses, and sometimes for sheer pleasure. In Macbeth, Shakespeare clearly

The Invention Of Tradition By Eric Hobsbawm And Terence...
Tradition is an integral and powerful aspect of life for everyone on the planet. From the
rainforests of Madagascar to the bustling metropolis of New York City, cultural, religious, and
social traditions are engrained in the very fiber of human identity. Due to this fierce loyalty to one
s traditions, we as people, don t often question where are traditions came from. We ignore the
questions about their ethics and moral values, and turn a blind eye to traditions that just don t
necessarily make sense. The Invention of Tradition by Eric Hobsbawm and Terence Ranger delves
into this avoided facet of history how traditions become what they are to society. The cultural life of
Walesin the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries provides a striking parallel to the mindset of a
large demographic of American citizens today. The conservative, nationalist peoples of the United
Statesis a group full of paradox. They feel their history and culture of life being slowly stripped
away, so they fanatically hold onto their beliefs with untamed ferocity. On the one hand the decay
or demise of an ancient way of life, writes Prys Morgan, on the other an unprecedented outburst of
interest in things Welsh and a highly self conscious activity to preserve...them (Morgan, 43). The
United States has seen this phenomenon unfold in front of their eyes this year, with the
reemergence of a faction of people whom feel forgotten, searching for their past amongst political
and social rubble. With the 2016

The Breakdown Of The Traditional Family Division Of...
During the late 20th century, the world has witnessed all sorts of social and technological changes
due to globalisation (Bologun, Sutherland and Oswick, 2015). In fact, the breakdown of the
traditional family division of labour, instant communication through technology, and the increased
complexity of organisational objectives have favour gender equality and diversity. Those changes
have pressure companies to improve their work structure to be more competitive and to the extent
that the idea of an effective leadershiphas come under pressure to change too. Indeed, organisations
have become less hierarchical and more decentralised networks where the traditional source of

They found out that female and male leaders have equal concern for the task. However, women
manifest more concern for an interpersonal relationship than men (Eagly and
Johannesen‐Schmidt, 2001). Moreover, using Blake and Mouton (1964) framework, women
show a more democratic (or participative) style, which facilitates collaboration, and less autocratic
(or directive) style, that don t enhance followers creativity. Thus, according to the contemporary
standard, women manifested more appropriate traits for being an effective leader.
Furthermore, Eagly and Carli (2003) also conclude that female leader were more transformational
and applied contingent reward behaviours which is one of transactional leadership component.
Conversely, male leaders were more likely to involve two other aspects of transactional
leadership which are active management by exception (waiting for a follower s mistake to
corrected it) and passive management by exception (waiting for issues to become severe before
solving it). Men also show a relatively high interest in laissez faire leadership. That different
categorization of leadership style became popular by Burns in 1978 and then Bass in 1985.

Dry Eye Condition Essay
Causes of Dry Eye Condition Hormonal changes are the main cause of dry eye syndrome ,
causing changes in the production of tears. The hormonal changes associated with menopause are
one of the main reasons why women are most affected by dry eye condition. Conditions that
affect the lacrimal gland or its ducts, including autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid
arthritis, lead to a decrease in tear secretion and develop dry eye condition. Tear secretion may
also be reduced because of certain conditions that decrease corneal sensitivity. Diseases such as
diabetes and shingles are associated with decreased corneal sensitivity, as well as contact lenses for
prolonged use and surgeries that make incisions in the cornea or that remove tissue

Brazilian Colonial Development Of Brazil
History
Most native tribes who were living in Brazil in the 1500 s thought they were descendants from
the first wave of migrants from North Asia. At the time of European discovery, the territory of
current day Brazil had as many as 2,000 nations and tribes, an estimated total population of nearly
3,000,000 Amerindians. ( Cia world factbook , 2016). It was discovered by a linguistic survey that
there were 188 indigenous languages with 155,000 speakers around 9000 BC. Initially Portugal had
little interest in Brazil, mainly because of high profits gained through commerce with Indochina.
After 1530, the Portuguese Crown devised the Hereditary Captaincies system to effectively
occupy its new colony, and later took direct control of the failed captaincies . ( Cia world fact
book , 2016). Sugar was the most important Brazilian Colonial product until the early 18th century.
Brazilian sugar at the time was stated as being high in quality, in comparison to those of other
nations. However, when other countries started to produce and offer sugar at a lower price, the
industry in Brazil faced a major crisis.
During the 18th century, an independent explorer named Bandeirante, discovered gold and
diamond in the state of Minas Gerais. Unfortunately, gold production declined towards the 18th
century, starting a period of relative stagnation of the Brazilian hinterland. The man power of
Amerindians and African slaves were greatly exploited in Brazil s colonial economy. ( Cia world

An Analysis Of The Destructors By T.
In The Destructors , T. keeps assuring that the reason they tore the house down wasn t personal,
but he clearly had motivation to tear it down. The motivation to tear the house down comes
mainly from T., not the whole gang. T. wants to tear down the house because there was a bombing
years ago, and every house crumbled into dust, including T. s, but this was the only house that was
left standing. The quote The fact that his father, a former architect and present clerk, had come

Investigating the Relationship between Cell Size and Rate of Diffusion
Ban Madi

Research Question: How does the size of the cell affect its efficiency in exchanging substances
through several ways, like diffusion?
Aim: To plan and carry out an investigation to show the relationship between volume/Cm3, surface
area, and diffusion using agar cubes measured in time/s; and to demonstrate, using diffusion, why
the size of cells is limited, keeping the room temperature and pressure constant.
Hypothesis: I expect to find that when the surface area to volume of a cell reaches a certain level,

Conclusion:
The experiment proved my hypothesis correct that as the size of the Agar cube grows larger; the
diffusion rate will be slower therefore taking up more time. The cubes were put into
hydrochloric acid and left by, in order to exchange materials through diffusion, as a sample of
cells in real life. As we can see the cube with the largest surface area and volume has the smallest
surface area to volume ratio. If the surface area to volume ratio gets too small, then the
substances won t be able to enter the cell fast enough to fuel the reactions, because the surface
area controls the rate of the exchange of materials while as the volume grows larger it will need
more materials to enter and exit, in a more quicker rate, therefore waste products will start to
accumulate within the cell as they will be produced faster than they can be excreted. In addition,
the cells will not be able to lose heat fast enough and so may overheat. This was concluded from
the experiment, where as the Agar cube dimension were larger, the rate of diffusion was much
smaller from the Agar cube with the smaller dimension, where the last had a larger V: SA ratio than
the larger cube.

Harrison Chorgeron, And Harrison Bergeron And By The...
Imagine being stuck in the future, but not the future everyone normally thinks about, full of new
technology and knowledge. This future is different, but not a good different. In Harrison Bergeron
by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., equality is the main issue and no one can get rid of it. In By the Waters Of
Babylon by Stephen Vincent Benet, technology and knowledge ruined the world so awful that the
only people left totally forgot about technology, even the simple pieces of technology like a sink.
Even though Harrison Bergeronand By the Waters of Babylon are two completely different stories,
the futures of them both end up being boring and depressing. They both also give warnings
about the future. In Harrison Bergeron, it is about how being equal and having total equality
throughout a country can totally ruin a it and in By the Waters of Babylon, it is about how the
knowledge of ourselves can ruin not only a city or state, but the whole world. In Harrison
Bergeron and By the Waters of Babylon, the future in both stories are gloomy and depressing.
First, in Harrison Bergeron, Vonnegut Jr. talks about how America would be like if everyone
was equal. But not just equal rights, actually equal, like equal strength, beauty, and intelligence.
The leader, the Handicapper General, put handicaps on everyone above average like weights,
masks, and even ear buzzers. George and Hazel were the parents of Harrison but Hazel was

Essay about Noam Chomsky s Impact on Language
Modern day linguistics has seen the arrival of many different viewpoints of language. Beginning
with Noam Chomsky, unquestionably one of the most influential figures in recent linguistics, new
theories and ideas have been introduced at a rapid rate. In part due to his status as a revitalizer in
the field, but also due to his often controversial theories, Chomsky maintains a place at the center
of this discussion. His search for a universal grammar and criticism of pure descriptivism have
informed generations of research. Much of this has been reactionary against him, but his influence
can not be discounted. His theories of a universal grammar have inspired writers on both sides of
the debate. Paul Hopper argues against this view, positing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He seeks to find underlying similarities across these distinct languages, to construct a general
theory of a singular language. However, it seems as though he cannot be scientifically vindicated
without the groundwork being laid down by many of the authors that he is critical of. Thus, it is
particularly interesting that Chomsky seems to be so at odds with the idea of descriptivism. When
Chomsky says, Grammar should not be merely a record of the data of usage, but, rather, should
offer an explanation for such data, (587) he is acknowledging the usefulness, presumably to his own
theories, of descriptive linguistics. He in fact recognizes the debt he owes when he says, To me, it
seems that [structural linguistics ] major achievement is to have provided a factual and a
methodological basis that makes it possible to return to the problems that occupied the traditional
universal grammarians... (590) But he goes on to say, On the other hand, it seems to me that the
substantive contributions to the theory of language structure are few, and that, to a large extent, the
concepts of modern linguistics constitute a retrogression as compared with universal grammar.
(590) Where the descriptivists see an end, Chomsky sees only the means, and is somewhat
dismissive of them. Chomsky is relatively blatant in his rejection of these ends. He later states,
[The linguist] is, first of all, concerned to report data

Analysis Of The Novel Wuthering Heights
Independent Reading Journal Wuthering Heights
Point of View Wuthering Heights has two main narrators from whose point of view the novel is
written. Lockwood is the primary narrator, and much is of what takes place in the present is told
through his eyes, via first person. The narration shifts to Ellen Dean, as she gives, to both
Lockwood and the reader, her version of past events. She serves as the peripheral narrator, who is
meant to tell the tale of what transpired before Lockwood s arrival to Wuthering Heights. Ellen s
story is filtered and recorded through Lockwood s perspective. There are however certain instances
where Nelly herself was not present and therefore relies on someone else s eyewitness report to
convey what transpired.
Syntax and Diction Wuthering Heights presents a variety of different styles, ranging from
Catherine s poetic speech, Heathcliff s verbal ferocity, Lockwood s greater literary discourse,
Nelly s lecturing rhetoric, and Joseph s unintelligible muttering. BrontГ« is very much direct in her
method of introducing movement in the novel. Each sentence leads the reader directly to the
thought attempting to be conveyed. Just in the opening paragraphs it says Pure bracing

Tension Between Japan And Russia
Before looking at the war, it is important to look at how tensions between the Russians and the
Japanese started.
Before the Russo Japanese War, the Japanese and the Russians did not have contact with each other
until the 1800s. The Japanese did not want European influence during the beginning of the 1600s.
The first Europeans to come into contact and successfully trade with Japan was the Dutch in 1638.
The first Japanese person to go to Russia was Dembei in 1697, and it was not until 1739 that the
first Russians arrived in Japan. The Japanese refused to trade with the Russians for a long time,
and it was not until a Russian expedition that followed after Admiral Perry s expedition in 1853 did
trade talks start with Japan. After more than

Dating all the way back to the indians, there were hunters that killed animals so they could
survive. Hunting was a source of food for the indians and still is a food source for people now.
According to an article by Ward M. Clark, a hunter, lecturer, and author, Early hunters knew this
very well, as they revered their primary prey. For example, Plains Indians referred to bison as uncle
and brother. Paleolithic cave drawings of game animals and hunt scenes are rendered with a
loving reverence that is still evident today, thousands of years later, (Clark). This shows that
people have been hunting for food for years making it part of our history as humans. Hunting is

Social Disorganization Theory Of Crime
Crimes are offensive acts committed by individuals or organizations that are unlawful and
punishable in accordance to a state s laws (Gehring, 2017). Acts of crime in most countries around
the world including the United States have caused more injuries, loss of property, and death as
compared to a collection of other events such as natural disasters. The social disorganization theory
is a notable example of concept that explains why different places experience different levels and
cases of crime. This essay will explore the theory s tenets, summarize an empirical test that supports
it, and identify its various strengths and weaknesses. It will also describe the assumed notions of
the policy behind the theory.
The theory was introduced by Clifford Shaw and Henry D. McKay in the year 1942. The two
while utilizing spatial maps in examining the residential location from where the cities different
juveniles resided discovered Chicago s crime rate was highly concentrated in specific regions of
the town. The rate of crime in different parts of the city remained stable for a long time despite
the changes in population over time. They realized that factors such as the race of a population did
not majorly influence crime. Shaw and McKay claimed that crime rates of different regions were a
credited to neighborhood dynamics and not the functions of individuals living in the neighborhood
(Bellair, 2017). This is because from their research they noticed that the rate of crime in locations

Gender And Sexual Identity In Shakespeare s Novel,...
Over the course of the summer I read Jeffrey Eugenides novel, Middlesex. The novel depicted the
journey of Cal, the narrator, as he struggled with his gender and sexual identity. I found Eugenides
use of first person narration compelling because it allowed me to feel a greater connection to Cal,
the narrator. Throughout the novelhe provided insight on his experiences, while also telling the tale
of his familys immigration to Detroit, Michigan. By relaying stories of Desdemona and Lefty s
early experiences in Smyrna and America I felt as though I gained a deeper understanding of Cal
and his family. However, because he was not present during these events, I felt conflicted over
whether or not he was a trustworthy, authoritative narrator. He simply retold what information he
had been fed, thus I felt he lacked ethos and credibility. Additionally, I was intrigued by the
various settings throughout the novel and felt they added to the overall appeal and intrigue of the
plot. In the novel Cal described the polarization and hatred of two opposing social groups in both
Smyrna and Detroit: in Smyrna the Greeks versus the Turks and in Detroit the blacks versus the
whites. This subtle juxtaposition was alluring and allowed for Eugenides to develop underlying
conflicts different than the conflicts that Cal and his family struggled with. I interpreted this foil as
a means by which Eugenides added his own social commentary to the novel, as he illustrated that

John Rawls And Nozick Social Justice
Views on social justice are highly important to defining the role of the state within society. The
perspectives presented by political philosophers John Rawls and Robert Nozick demonstrate two
extremely different views of societal justice and the roles that the state should have in society. To
express these views, Rawls and Nozick each form their own principles of justice, or sets of rules to
guide societal justice. In this paper, I will analyze the views of each of these thinkers. I will also
argue that Rawls principles of justice are preferable to Nozick s due to Nozick s lack of focus on
societal inequalities.

In Nozick s Theory of Entitlement, he argues that one is entitled to any holding that is gained
through just measures. However, this disregards the disadvantages that many face in society.
Systematic poverty is one of the disadvantages that is prevalent in our current society, as there is
extensive research citing the negative effects of growing up in poverty. One such study, which
appeared in the Science Magazine, gives evidence that growing up in poverty causes heightened
levels of stress, which can lead to people developing risk averse and less goal directed behavior.
These psychological changes can cause poverty to continue over generations. This is problematic
because the family a person is born into is not reflective of desert or merit. If economics were
operated completely freely, those born into disadvantaged families would have a decreased chance
of reaching financial stability purely due to natural chance. Even if all individual acquisitions and

Essay On Student Observation
Over the past month, I have been observing in biology class in Lebanon High School. During my
time in this class I have observed a lot and have had a lot of great opportunities that have helped
open my eyes toward teaching, and the skills that are necessary to be successful in the field. While
there, I had the opportunity to work with a student with learningdisabilities. During this interaction I
learned how to best work with those who have a learning disabilityand that it takes the ability to
think outside the box when trying to explain to the student what the task is so that they are able to
understand what they are being asked to do.
While observing the student with a learning disability, I observed a few interesting qualities that
this student had that stood out from the other students. One of the qualities that I observed was that
he was quiet. Unlike the rest of his class who would turn around and talk with the kids behind them,
he would just sit there and wait for further instructions. Another interesting observation that I made
was that my student would be interested in his work, but as time went on he began to lose interest
in his work and would need someone to remind him to stay on a task which was one of his
accommodations. I found that his ability to become unmotivated was more prevalent when he was
taking notes with the class off the Smart Board compared to when the class was in a group
discussion and the teacher was asking open ended questions.

Theodore Roosevelt s Influence On Latin America
Theodore Roosevelt was a President known for a very dynamic and progressive administration,
and his foreign policy in Latin America was no exception. His policies in Latin America were
beneficial for the rapidly growing United States, but left an impact on Latin America that was both
positive and negative. President Roosevelt took past policies of the United States, such as the
unenforced Monroe Doctrine of 1823, and amended them to have the backing of the Navy in the
early 1900s. One particular amendment was called the Platt Amendment of 1901, and opened the
door to United States expansionism under President Roosevelt. It was under this amendment that
Cuba quickly became the foundation for the new Latin American policies of the United States. The
Roosevelt Corollary was another important part of Roosevelt s Latin American foreign policy.
Roosevelt believed that Latin Americawas quite vulnerable to European expansionism, and added
his Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine which stated that should the Europeans attack, and should any
Latin American nation engage in chronic wrongdoing such as outstanding debt, then the United
States would intervene on their behalf. In essence, Europe would remain where it was, while the
United States controlled the entire Western Hemisphere. The opportunity came for Roosevelt to
implement this policy during the invasion of the Dominican Republic by European debt collectors,
and Venezuelan Crisis. Lastly, Theodore Roosevelthad a

Identifying The Identification Of Bacteria
Abstract
The identification of bacteria is a crucial procedure in the field of biology. Identification can be
done through a series of tests run on different forms of media that detect the physical and
biochemical properties of the cells. In this experiment, a sample containing two unknown species of
bacteria was run through fourteen tests to determine morphology, fermentation properties, reducing
and oxidative properties, and other various characteristics of each isolated unknown. It was
concluded that the sample contained Lactococcus lactis and Shigella flexneri.
Introduction It is fascinating to look around and see how much diversity exists on earth. Perhaps
even more interesting is the diversity that exists far beyond the naked eye. Over the past several
decades, it has been determined that microorganisms account for the majority of the biomass on
earth and new discoveries about these organisms are constantly being made (4). Bacteria make up
a very large domain of the prokaryotes, or single celled organisms. Bacteria have an enormous
range of properties. Some can be infectious and lead to maladies and fatalities; others can benefit us
by contributing to medications, foods, and even maintaining natural body functions like those in
the digestive tract. Bacteria are virtually everywhere. It is for these reasons that it is vital we learn
as much as possible about the once unseen organisms. Studying their physical and biochemical
features can help us understand how to

Magnet School
In today s world violence, chaos, and death has become too common and too redundant. It seems
as though every day there is a new story in the newspaper about police brutality , the corruptions
of society , and civil wars within developing countries. Despite the fact that we can easily look up
information about the daily traditions and values of different cultures around the world we fail
to do so. The lack of knowledge about other people and societies ,besides our own, causes a
shallow understanding of why people do the things we hear and see in the headlines. This magnet
school appeals to me because I believe learning about the world s customs will help me in my
future goals to become a journalist. I believe this magnet school will help me... Show more content

Often times the person writing the new story is unable to give a full representation of the
situation at hand simply because they do not have the experiences of someone who has actually
been a part of the group of people that were affected. Is the person writing the story has studied
the culture and rituals of the people they will be able to give a clearer understanding of the
story.Today many news stories are given from the point of view of someone on the outside
looking in. However, I believe if they were written by someone who understood the culture of
the people group they are talking about they could turn it into a story that is looking from the
inside out. When people read a story that is in the perspective of the people that are experiencing
changes, because of this I believe readers differently towards the dilemma at hand. For example,
many people want to migrate from Syria into America because of all the chaos in their
homeland. Many Americans, however feel that taking in Syrian refugees could be dangerous
because they could possibly be a terroristic threat to America. I believe people feel this way
because they have not been exposed to the fight that every Syrian is forced to grapple through
every day. Most of the articles about Syrian refugees fail to recognize

Enzymes in Industry
Enzymes in Industry
Enzymes are described as chemical a catalyst that is they speed up the rate of reaction.
Enzymes have enormous potential in the commercial world. They are cheap to use in industry and
they do not need high temperatures to work. They work at neutral PH and normal atmospheric
pressure. This reduces the costs of fuel in industry and are energy saving. Also, enzymes can be
reused. This means that they are needed in relatively small amounts in comparison with Inorganic
catalysts. Once a suitable enzyme has been found, it is made on a larger scale and purified before
use. Enzymes are specific in their action. They only react with one substrate to produce a specific
product. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Brewing: Beer brewing essentially involves the production of alcohol by the action of yeasts on
plant materials such as barley, maize, sorghum, hops and rice. The yeast cells are capable of
converting simple sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. However, most of the sugar present in
plant materials is in the form of complex polysaccharides such as starch and cannot be readily
utilised. Traditionally these nutrients are released by the process of malting whereby barley is
allowed to partly germinate during which endogenous enzymes are released which degrade
starch and protein to simple sugars and amino acids which can be utilised by the yeast cells. The
malting process is a relatively expensive way of manufacturing enzymes and is not always easy
to control. Industrial enzymes such as amylases, glucanases and proteases can be added to
unmalted barley resulting in the same simple sugars and amino acids that malting would liberate
but in a more controlled fashion. Enzymes also play an important role as filtration improvers.
Slow filtration of the mash or final beer often results from the presence of viscous
polysaccharides. Amyloglucosidase can be used to break down sugars to produce low calorie beer.
Detergents: Enzymes have been used in the detergent industry since

Compare And Contrast Worldview Essay
As written in our textbooks the term worldview is defined as the perception of the self, society
and the world around us , so on this very basis alone, I would say everyone in the world has a
different worldview. Although two people may be very much alike and share similar opinions or
outlooks, no people look at everything the same way. So many factors are involved in shaping our
personalities and views including relationships, environment and culture, and even if two people
grow up with the same people in the same place with the same society, they will always be
different in some way. The way each individual perceives each and every detail of our lives is
unique to that person; therefore there are innumerable differences between all human

Breastfeeding Should Be Allowed In Public
Breastfeeding is natural and breast milk is the best nutritional choice for infants. Breastfeeding
helps babies to fight infections, prevent allergies and diarrhea, and protects against several chronic
conditions, breast milk contains antibodies that help infants fight off viruses and bacteria, and is
easy for an infants stomach to digest. Also, breastfeedinghelps the infant and the mother to bond
and it can help the mothers to lose extra calories fast, which they gained during pregnancy.
However, breastfeeding in public tends to be controversial, and breastfeeding mothers are forced
to use the public bathroom to feed their babies. If anyone of us can have our lunch or dinner in
public, why shouldn t a breastfed baby has the same rights? And who wants to have lunch in the
bathroom? Women should breastfeed anywhere except in the bathroom. women have a legal right
to breastfeed her babies in public, and women s breast is created to nurture babies. People argue
breastfeeding in public is indecent exposure and unconformable to those who are watching a
mother nursing a child. Breastfeeding in public shouldn t bother other people because it is
unrealistic to expect mothers to feed their babies in places like bathrooms.

The Impact Of Protests And Social Movements In The Civil...
Will protests and social movements be what they are today if media wasn t such an influence?
Social movements are groups of individuals that focus on a certain situation that has specific
political or social issues, that they wanted to change ( McLeod, 2011). Social movements use the
media to express concerns and provide evidence to communicate their points of concern and
interest. Various blogs such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are primary sources that
organizations use to advertise and introduce the movements and protests. Protestare what the social
movements do to make a statement to express their disapproval of the situation ( McLeod, 2011).
Protesting is a form of expressing one s opinions and concerns about issues that happen in their
society. Dr. King often used the media through his protesting for civil rights during his marches
for accurate context. One of his famously recorded protest were the March on Washington For
Jobs and Freedom where he delivered his well known speech I Have a Dream this successfully
removed the barriers from the states restrictions. Media has a great impact on protesting ever since
the Civil Rights Movement(1954 1968) to the Gay Marriage Rights (2015). Media coverage
concerning protesting allowed the country to become aware of these events regarding certain
movements. Thus media is necessary for protesting and social movements in our society. Many
outlets of media such as various news companies and social media outlets

The Effects Of Television On A Stellar Binge Watching Show...
causing the viewers mind to drift. Whereas if shows are short with less complex plot lines I find
myself inclined to watch the next episode, after all what s another twenty minutes of my life. This
essentially minimizes the risk and time commitment for the viewer, cutting their new planned
viewing time in half. With shorter episodes, audience members can still experience an escape from
their everyday lives and be entertained without having to dedicated a large amount time to their
televisionwatching habits. This allows fans to reap the same benefits from watching a longer show,
without having to give up precious time.
While instant gratification and lesser time commitments are two key factors in determining a stellar

Watching television in the traditional way, like on a television set in a shared space can bring up
many distractions. External factors like watching a show with other people or background noise
can create distractions that drastically effect a viewers watching experience, thus decreasing their
investment in the show. This is why I much prefer to watch television shows on a computer or
tablet with headphones on. This promotes escapism and decreases, if not eliminates outside
distractions. If I am very concentrated on the show I am watching, then I become much more likely
to view the next episode and begin a binge watching spiral. This same concept goes to show why
viewing a show in a shared setting with distractions decreases the likelihood of binge watching as
viewers cannot achieve a high level of escapism and become less invested in the show.
Even though the medium plays a crucial role in binge watching, it is also important to take into
account the role commercials play in one s television viewing experience. Commercials serves as a
form of distraction when it comes to television watching, as they disrupt a viewer s concentration.
These increased distractions again prove why watching television in the traditional sense, like on
network television, decreases habits of binge watching. But what about when online streaming
services have commercials as well, does this change the way people binge watch? Video streaming
services like

Opression Of Women In The Story Of An Hour
In the short story, The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, the main character receives depressing
news that her husband was involved in a deadly train accident. Initially, Mrs. Mallard falls into
shock and has the normal feelings anyone would have when losing a loved one; such as
depression, denial, anger, etc. Wanting to escape this cruel reality she locks herself in her room
and begins to process these emotions. She described this possession of self assertion which she
suddenly recognize as the strongest impulse of her being... [she thought this as she whispered]
free! Body and soul free! . After doing so, she becomes aware of the fact that she is ultimately
relieved to be free from the chain that held her down within her marriage.
When Mrs. Mallard escapes to the tranquility of her room to be alone with her emotions, her eyes

Once Mrs. Mallard came to the conclusion that she would be able to make a life for herself and
have her own individual impact on the world without a man and that was something her
subconscious desired. She realizes how she was actually not happy at all in her relationship an
yet she loved him sometimes. Often she did not . This is a key moment in Mrs. Mallards life,
because this is where she comes to the realization that she has more to offer in life and desires to
be free. Chopin uses Mrs. Mallard symbolically represents women during the depression and their
desires to be free whether or not the know if they do or not.
Chopin uses this line, a joy that kills , uses irony to demonstrate how the people around her do not
understand Mrs. Mallard. Again, Mrs. Mallard demonstrates women as a unit, and the people
around her symbolizes society. Ultimately women wish to be independent from men in society and
have their own

  • 2. The Caste System By Mashasweta Devi Please don t play your games with a helpless poor girl declared Dhowli. The Misra boy leaned in closer to her replying, I m not playing games. Dhowli then shouted back You ll leave after you tire of the game, and what will become of me? Am I to be like Jhale? No, deota, not that. (238). I m hesitate to keep reading after this line thinking to myself how I feel sorry for Dhowli and who she is going to become since getting pregnant with a Misra boy who is dominant in the caste system. Dhowli creates an ambitious, courageous, and philosophical figure in the short story Dhowli by Mashasweta Devi. In the short story the caste system is well defined showing of social stratification of two opposite levels of the social chain in India. To an American reader the foreignness of how India treats single mothers is how this short story stands out. Dhowli plays the role of an untouchable that is very poor who gets pregnant by a Misra boy, which is on the top of the caste system. Dhowli and her mother work on the Misra boy s family s land doing the worst chores for the littlest about of millet and grain for Dhowli and her mother to live off of. The chores consist of sweeping the garden, while managing the wind, and tending to the goats. The word about Dhowli s pregnancy spreads through the village rapidly. When Dhowli goes outside she gets stares and has to watch her every move since she is an untouchable and people do horrible things to untouchables. When the Misra s family ... • 3. Reflection About Divorce Divorce is difficult on the children involved. When my parents finalized their divorce, it was decided that for the majority of the summer we would stay with our mother. The divorce occurred when my brothers and I were very young. My mother lived in a small, unremarkable town named Evart that is north of Lansing. Our grandmother lived in the outskirts of nearby Reed City. We spent most of our time during the summer at her cramped little trailer. The trailer she lived in was on a decently sized plot of land. Her home was situated on a hill that leveled out quickly as the path led to the road. The yard was expansive with hard brown grass covering a small portion with dirt covering the rest. On one side of the trailer was a large red barn with chipped paint. On the other side was an old brown camper that held two beds and an old television with an antenna resting on the top. There was no backyard as the trailer was a few feet from a wooden fence that had barbed wire across the top to stop the neighbor s horses from entering the property. The camper is where my brother and I slept while with my grandmother. The property where my brother Sabastian and I stayed at shaped some of the ways my personality developed. When our mother left us at my grandmother s she would take my oldest brother Andrew with her, leaving my older brother Sabastian and I with our grandma. We were mostly independent; we were not allowed in the house so we roamed the property playing with the dogs ... • 4. Feminism Is A Very Loaded Word Feminism is a very loaded word. Many people have their own definition for it. Generally, it is defined as equality between men and women. Women and men should have equality within the house and as mothers and fathers. Children rely much on mothers because of the reproductive labor that is traditionally done by them. As such, they need to be included in such a discussion. Within a household, women and men, mothers and fathers, have different roles and responsibilities, much of which are based on the person s gender. Typically, women or mothers are responsible for the emotional, social, and physical well being of her family (Lober 80), most of the hands on family work (Lorber 81), and keep up of the house. The men or fathers are usually seen as the bread winners of the family. Due to this and the work they do outside of the house, men usually have little to no responsibilities to the family and within the home. It is not unusual for women to clean the house, make sure the children are well taken care of, and cook while the man, or father, is at work. When he gets back home, after work, it is expected for him to relax and unwind. Although they are a couple with similar obligations, the divide of them is not equally distributed among the two and offer either one different results. Not only is the work that is done within the house hold unequal, in favor of the man, women s work is also invisible and usually unpaid. Both women who stay at home or work both have ... Not only do the characters not take themselves seriously, they also don t take horror movies seriously. A day after the first murders take place, Sidney Prescott receives a cryptic phone call. Finally in the last section of this chapter, we will forecast the future outlook of Intra Asia for the next five years. 4.1 Analysis of Intra Asia Market We had tailored our interview questions to gather professional opinions on the future outlook of Intra Asia and Intra Asia container shipping and how they could impact and affect the shipowners and operators (Appendix D). Based on the interviews results (Appendix E) we had gathered, 80% of the respondents believe that the current shipping market is now in its recovery from the longest downturn in three decades in the shipping industry. It is largely due to the cause of overcapacity of ships in the market that have depressed freight rates since the end of a shipping boom in 2008 (Shipping Industry sees an end to five year downturn, 2014). The current recovery seem to be fragile in Europe, though it is gaining traction in the US and UK, while emerging market is showing signs of slow growth (Howard, 2014). • 10. Marx s Term For Capitalist Bourgeoisie: Page 10; Marx s term for capitalist, those who own the means of production. The food production companies have accentually bought the government. If they come up with a plan to produce more food, no matter how harmful it may be to the consumer, the government will not step in to protect the citizen of Americans. As the bourgeoisie owns the industry, this fact has been proven within the video of Food Inc. What is astonishing is that a company was actually able to get a patent on life. How can a company be allowed to monopolize an entire industry? That is depriving people of their basic human right of life, to eat healthy food, food that has not been modified by harmful hormones or genetics. Several of the food production companies give jobs to illegal immigrants and once their services are no longer needed, then the heads of these companies call immigration to have them arrested and deported back to their home country. This in turn saves the company money because they do not have to pay out anything for unemployment wages for laying the employees off for a period of time. The food industry has really become the bourgeoisie of this century. Proletariat: Page 10: Marx s term for the exploited class, the mass of workers who do not have the means of production. From the rainforests of Madagascar to the bustling metropolis of New York City, cultural, religious, and social traditions are engrained in the very fiber of human identity. Due to this fierce loyalty to one s traditions, we as people, don t often question where are traditions came from. We ignore the questions about their ethics and moral values, and turn a blind eye to traditions that just don t necessarily make sense. The Invention of Tradition by Eric Hobsbawm and Terence Ranger delves into this avoided facet of history how traditions become what they are to society. The cultural life of Walesin the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries provides a striking parallel to the mindset of a large demographic of American citizens today. The conservative, nationalist peoples of the United Statesis a group full of paradox. They feel their history and culture of life being slowly stripped away, so they fanatically hold onto their beliefs with untamed ferocity. On the one hand the decay or demise of an ancient way of life, writes Prys Morgan, on the other an unprecedented outburst of interest in things Welsh and a highly self conscious activity to preserve...them (Morgan, 43). The United States has seen this phenomenon unfold in front of their eyes this year, with the reemergence of a faction of people whom feel forgotten, searching for their past amongst political and social rubble. At the time of European discovery, the territory of current day Brazil had as many as 2,000 nations and tribes, an estimated total population of nearly 3,000,000 Amerindians. ( Cia world factbook , 2016). It was discovered by a linguistic survey that there were 188 indigenous languages with 155,000 speakers around 9000 BC. Initially Portugal had little interest in Brazil, mainly because of high profits gained through commerce with Indochina. After 1530, the Portuguese Crown devised the Hereditary Captaincies system to effectively occupy its new colony, and later took direct control of the failed captaincies . ( Cia world fact book , 2016). Sugar was the most important Brazilian Colonial product until the early 18th century. Brazilian sugar at the time was stated as being high in quality, in comparison to those of other nations. However, when other countries started to produce and offer sugar at a lower price, the industry in Brazil faced a major crisis. Aim: To plan and carry out an investigation to show the relationship between volume/Cm3, surface area, and diffusion using agar cubes measured in time/s; and to demonstrate, using diffusion, why the size of cells is limited, keeping the room temperature and pressure constant. Hypothesis: I expect to find that when the surface area to volume of a cell reaches a certain level, diffusion alone won t be able to supply ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conclusion: The experiment proved my hypothesis correct that as the size of the Agar cube grows larger; the diffusion rate will be slower therefore taking up more time. The cubes were put into hydrochloric acid and left by, in order to exchange materials through diffusion, as a sample of cells in real life. As we can see the cube with the largest surface area and volume has the smallest surface area to volume ratio. If the surface area to volume ratio gets too small, then the substances won t be able to enter the cell fast enough to fuel the reactions, because the surface area controls the rate of the exchange of materials while as the volume grows larger it will need more materials to enter and exit, in a more quicker rate, therefore waste products will start to accumulate within the cell as they will be produced faster than they can be excreted. In addition, the cells will not be able to lose heat fast enough and so may overheat. This was concluded from the experiment, where as the Agar cube dimension were larger, the rate of diffusion was much smaller from the Agar cube with the smaller dimension, where the last had a larger V: SA ratio than the larger cube. Errors and Improvements: Error Improvement Parallax error, resulting in a misreading in volume. This is caused by reading the volume readings from an angle, thus to ... This future is different, but not a good different. In Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., equality is the main issue and no one can get rid of it. In By the Waters Of Babylon by Stephen Vincent Benet, technology and knowledge ruined the world so awful that the only people left totally forgot about technology, even the simple pieces of technology like a sink. Even though Harrison Bergeronand By the Waters of Babylon are two completely different stories, the futures of them both end up being boring and depressing. Beginning with Noam Chomsky, unquestionably one of the most influential figures in recent linguistics, new theories and ideas have been introduced at a rapid rate. In part due to his status as a revitalizer in the field, but also due to his often controversial theories, Chomsky maintains a place at the center of this discussion. His search for a universal grammar and criticism of pure descriptivism have informed generations of research. Much of this has been reactionary against him, but his influence can not be discounted. His theories of a universal grammar have inspired writers on both sides of the debate. Paul Hopper argues against this view, positing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He seeks to find underlying similarities across these distinct languages, to construct a general theory of a singular language. However, it seems as though he cannot be scientifically vindicated without the groundwork being laid down by many of the authors that he is critical of. Thus, it is particularly interesting that Chomsky seems to be so at odds with the idea of descriptivism. When Chomsky says, Grammar should not be merely a record of the data of usage, but, rather, should offer an explanation for such data, (587) he is acknowledging the usefulness, presumably to his own theories, of descriptive linguistics. He in fact recognizes the debt he owes when he says, To me, it seems that [structural linguistics ] major achievement is to have provided a factual and a methodological basis that makes it possible to return to the problems that occupied the traditional universal grammarians... (590) But he goes on to say, On the other hand, it seems to me that the substantive contributions to the theory of language structure are few, and that, to a large extent, the concepts of modern linguistics constitute a retrogression as compared with universal grammar. Lockwood is the primary narrator, and much is of what takes place in the present is told through his eyes, via first person. The narration shifts to Ellen Dean, as she gives, to both Lockwood and the reader, her version of past events. She serves as the peripheral narrator, who is meant to tell the tale of what transpired before Lockwood s arrival to Wuthering Heights. Ellen s story is filtered and recorded through Lockwood s perspective. There are however certain instances where Nelly herself was not present and therefore relies on someone else s eyewitness report to convey what transpired. The social disorganization theory is a notable example of concept that explains why different places experience different levels and cases of crime. The rate of crime in different parts of the city remained stable for a long time despite the changes in population over time. The novel depicted the journey of Cal, the narrator, as he struggled with his gender and sexual identity. I found Eugenides use of first person narration compelling because it allowed me to feel a greater connection to Cal, the narrator. Throughout the novelhe provided insight on his experiences, while also telling the tale of his familys immigration to Detroit, Michigan. By relaying stories of Desdemona and Lefty s early experiences in Smyrna and America I felt as though I gained a deeper understanding of Cal and his family. However, because he was not present during these events, I felt conflicted over whether or not he was a trustworthy, authoritative narrator. He simply retold what information he had been fed, thus I felt he lacked ethos and credibility. Additionally, I was intrigued by the various settings throughout the novel and felt they added to the overall appeal and intrigue of the plot. In the novel Cal described the polarization and hatred of two opposing social groups in both Smyrna and Detroit: in Smyrna the Greeks versus the Turks and in Detroit the blacks versus the whites. This subtle juxtaposition was alluring and allowed for Eugenides to develop underlying conflicts different than the conflicts that Cal and his family struggled with. Theodore Roosevelt s Influence On Latin America Theodore Roosevelt was a President known for a very dynamic and progressive administration, and his foreign policy in Latin America was no exception. His policies in Latin America were beneficial for the rapidly growing United States, but left an impact on Latin America that was both positive and negative. President Roosevelt took past policies of the United States, such as the unenforced Monroe Doctrine of 1823, and amended them to have the backing of the Navy in the early 1900s. One particular amendment was called the Platt Amendment of 1901, and opened the door to United States expansionism under President Roosevelt. It was under this amendment that Cuba quickly became the foundation for the new Latin American policies of the United States. The Roosevelt Corollary was another important part of Roosevelt s Latin American foreign policy. Roosevelt believed that Latin Americawas quite vulnerable to European expansionism, and added his Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine which stated that should the Europeans attack, and should any Latin American nation engage in chronic wrongdoing such as outstanding debt, then the United States would intervene on their behalf. In essence, Europe would remain where it was, while the United States controlled the entire Western Hemisphere. The opportunity came for Roosevelt to implement this policy during the invasion of the Dominican Republic by European debt collectors, and Venezuelan Crisis. Lastly, Theodore Roosevelthad a ... • 44. Identifying The Identification Of Bacteria Abstract The identification of bacteria is a crucial procedure in the field of biology. Identification can be done through a series of tests run on different forms of media that detect the physical and biochemical properties of the cells. In this experiment, a sample containing two unknown species of bacteria was run through fourteen tests to determine morphology, fermentation properties, reducing and oxidative properties, and other various characteristics of each isolated unknown. It was concluded that the sample contained Lactococcus lactis and Shigella flexneri. Introduction It is fascinating to look around and see how much diversity exists on earth. Perhaps even more interesting is the diversity that exists far beyond the naked eye. Over the past several decades, it has been determined that microorganisms account for the majority of the biomass on earth and new discoveries about these organisms are constantly being made (4). Bacteria make up a very large domain of the prokaryotes, or single celled organisms. Bacteria have an enormous range of properties. Some can be infectious and lead to maladies and fatalities; others can benefit us by contributing to medications, foods, and even maintaining natural body functions like those in the digestive tract. Bacteria are virtually everywhere. It is for these reasons that it is vital we learn as much as possible about the once unseen organisms. Studying their physical and biochemical features can help us understand how to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It seems as though every day there is a new story in the newspaper about police brutality , the corruptions of society , and civil wars within developing countries. Despite the fact that we can easily look up information about the daily traditions and values of different cultures around the world we fail to do so. The lack of knowledge about other people and societies ,besides our own, causes a shallow understanding of why people do the things we hear and see in the headlines. Is the person writing the story has studied the culture and rituals of the people they will be able to give a clearer understanding of the story.Today many news stories are given from the point of view of someone on the outside looking in. However, I believe if they were written by someone who understood the culture of the people group they are talking about they could turn it into a story that is looking from the inside out. When people read a story that is in the perspective of the people that are experiencing changes, because of this I believe readers differently towards the dilemma at hand. For example, many people want to migrate from Syria into America because of all the chaos in their homeland. Many Americans, however feel that taking in Syrian refugees could be dangerous because they could possibly be a terroristic threat to America. I believe people feel this way because they have not been exposed to the fight that every Syrian is forced to grapple through every day. They are cheap to use in industry and they do not need high temperatures to work. They work at neutral PH and normal atmospheric pressure. This reduces the costs of fuel in industry and are energy saving. Also, enzymes can be reused. This means that they are needed in relatively small amounts in comparison with Inorganic catalysts. Once a suitable enzyme has been found, it is made on a larger scale and purified before use. Enzymes are specific in their action. They only react with one substrate to produce a specific product. Brewing: Beer brewing essentially involves the production of alcohol by the action of yeasts on plant materials such as barley, maize, sorghum, hops and rice. The yeast cells are capable of converting simple sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. However, most of the sugar present in plant materials is in the form of complex polysaccharides such as starch and cannot be readily utilised. Traditionally these nutrients are released by the process of malting whereby barley is allowed to partly germinate during which endogenous enzymes are released which degrade starch and protein to simple sugars and amino acids which can be utilised by the yeast cells. The malting process is a relatively expensive way of manufacturing enzymes and is not always easy to control. Industrial enzymes such as amylases, glucanases and proteases can be added to unmalted barley resulting in the same simple sugars and amino acids that malting would liberate but in a more controlled fashion. Enzymes also play an important role as filtration improvers. Slow filtration of the mash or final beer often results from the presence of viscous polysaccharides. Amyloglucosidase can be used to break down sugars to produce low calorie beer. Detergents: Enzymes have been used in the detergent industry since ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Compare And Contrast Worldview Essay As written in our textbooks the term worldview is defined as the perception of the self, society and the world around us , so on this very basis alone, I would say everyone in the world has a different worldview. Although two people may be very much alike and share similar opinions or outlooks, no people look at everything the same way. So many factors are involved in shaping our personalities and views including relationships, environment and culture, and even if two people grow up with the same people in the same place with the same society, they will always be different in some way. The way each individual perceives each and every detail of our lives is unique to that person; therefore there are innumerable differences between all human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Watching television in the traditional way, like on a television set in a shared space can bring up many distractions. External factors like watching a show with other people or background noise can create distractions that drastically effect a viewers watching experience, thus decreasing their investment in the show. This is why I much prefer to watch television shows on a computer or tablet with headphones on. This promotes escapism and decreases, if not eliminates outside distractions. If I am very concentrated on the show I am watching, then I become much more likely to view the next episode and begin a binge watching spiral. This same concept goes to show why viewing a show in a shared setting with distractions decreases the likelihood of binge watching as viewers cannot achieve a high level of escapism and become less invested in the show. Even though the medium plays a crucial role in binge watching, it is also important to take into account the role commercials play in one s television viewing experience. Commercials serves as a form of distraction when it comes to television watching, as they disrupt a viewer s concentration.
