How the Hippies Counterculture Transformed Music Essay
In the 1950 s and 1960 s, rebellion and music were synonymous. The 1950 s brought widespread
attention to a new kind of music coined as Rock n Roll . Because parents deemed the music as sinful,
the youth used it to establish an identity for themselvess. In the 1960 s, the rebellion was given a
collective charge when young adults voiced displeasure over the country s entrance into the Vietnam
War and the use of nuclear weapons. One group within this movement was coined the hippies . This
paper will discuss the beliefs of the hippies of Haight Ashbury in San Francisco, California and
illustrate how the hippie counterculture transformed into an evolution of music, in the making of
protest songs and the new psychedelic sound. It will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Haight Ashbury had a history of being an entertainment center, capitalizing on San Francisco s
economic success in the Gold Rush.
In his book titled The Making of a Counterculture: Reflections on the Technocratic Society and Its
Youthful Opposition, historian Theodore Roszak described a counterculture as typically involving
disapproval or an attempted dismissal of those institutions which presently hold some level of
dominance, while simultaneously having hope for an improved life in a new society, in terms of
thinking and being. There has been some level of debate, discussing whether or not the hippie
movement of the 1960 s and 1970 s matched this definition. Was the movement solely a product of the
hippie s clustered university lifestyle, where common experimentation with drugs as well as political
activism served as their own sources of rebellion? This notion was argued by anthropologist William
L. Partridge, in his case study titled The Hippie Ghetto: The Natural History of a Subculture.
Roszak argues in his book about a hippie rejection of technocracy: the system of organizations and
elite experts that influences society to attach itself to the importance of efficiency, rationalizing,
planning, and necessity, which hippies felt was clearly depicted by the nuclear arms race and fight
against communism between the United States and U.S.S.R.

Ancient Civilization Dbq
If ancient civilizations did not invent new ideas and machines, the world would not be in the spot it is
today. Innovation is necessary for the continuation and improvement of a society. Ancient cities in the
River Valley were very intelligent and knew how to use the resources they could find. Civilizations in
the Middle East and Asia, circa 3,000 BCE, showed great success in the areas of government, science
and technology, and writing. The cities made advancements in government and the security of their
lands. For example, the Amorites rebuilt the walls of Babylon with burnt brick to keep themselves safe
from intruders (doc 3). Another instance of the advancement of government practices in ancient times
was in the Mauryan Empire under Ashoka s rule (doc 9). Ashoka had rock edicts inscribed to proclaim
the laws of the land to each and every citizen. He made sure the ... Show more content on

The Assyrians were using bandages to treat wounds and knew about inflammation, while the
Egyptians were treating their mummies with crushed spices and perfumes (doc 1 and 4). Medical
achievements were very important during this time period because there were diseases that were hard

Document 2 shows a picture from an Egyptian book, and a boat is present. Boats were a very useful
invention because using them made it easy to go up and down the Nile River. The Chinese had very
advanced silk and bronze making techniques (doc 5 and 7). They were the best at using bronze to
make pots and jewelry at the time, and it brought them a lot of revenue, just like their silk clothes and
fabric did. The people from Ancient India had a proper drainage system to remove waste from homes
(doc 6), while the Egyptians made advancements in engineering and geometry (doc 12). Learning
about these things made building the pyramids

Censorship Of Television And Television
Restrictions were also placed against foreign news outlets following the election. Reporters from the
Italian public television broadcaster Radiotelevisione Italiana claimed that one of its interpreters was
beaten with clubs by riot police and the officers confiscated the cameraman s tapes. The Al Arabiya s
offices in Tehran were closed for a week by Iranian authorities on June 14 and no explanation was
given for the decision. Additionally, the director of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World
Service, the world s largest international broadcaster of news, speech and discussions, made claims
that the Iranian Government jammed its broadcasts to the country. Peter Horrocks, director of BBC

Judiciary Action
Before discussing the actions taken by judiciary officials in Iran, the history of the system must be
understood. The Iranian revolution of 1979 essentially erased six decades of modernization of Iran s
judicial system. The revolution overthrew the Pahlavi Dynasty, which had ruled Iran from 1926 to
1979, under Muhammad Reza Shah. Similar to his father who had ruled before him, Muhammad Reza
Shah eliminated dissent through repression; banning the independent political parties and repressing
minority groups. By the 1960s, these policies began to spark resistance in the form of armed groups
fighting with guerilla warfare, similar to the methods used Algeria and Palestine resistance

Jenny Durra Character Analysis
Analyzation of Jenny Curran: Trait and Psychodynamic Theories Looking at Psychodynamic areas in
Jenny Curran s life, it is easy to see where the root of her problems lie and how she grew into such a
troubled young woman. Whether she realized it at any stage of her life or not, Jenny s experiences as a
little girl followed her for the rest of her life. After her mother s death when she was only a little girl of
five years old, she unfortunately lives with her alcoholic father in Greenbow, Alabama. Her dad
sexually and physically assaults her and her two equally unfortunate siblings during the course of their
troubled childhood. In an innocent and desperate attempt to run away from her dad s alcohol induced
stupors, she and Forrest hide nearby ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was not uncommon that she found herself confused, wondering why she was dealt the cards given to
her and dwelling on why it was so hard for her to just disappear to a new place she didn t know. Since
Jenny s childhood was plagued by physical and sexual abuse from her drunken father, the police
whisked her away to coincide along with her grandmother during her teenage youth. The pain and
torture would nevertheless make an imprint upon her personality and make her the perfect example of
the psychodynamic theory. Upon a return visit to Greenbow, Alabama, Jenny sees her father s
abandoned house and is given an unhappy reminder of her abusive past. It was her unhealthy home
life that likely caused her to go astray, searching for the love and nurturing she never received as a
child. Her vulnerability as a child translated into pain and destruction as an adult. Jenny traveled down
a road to nowhere in her many pursuits, she had no goals or final destination in mind. She lived by the
seat of her pants. She led a whimsical, spontaneous life, but somewhere down the road she got lost.
Jenny was often confused and ran away from her true happiness. Jenny didn t care where the road or
more explicitly, life took her. For example, after an anti Vietnam rally in Washington, D.C., Jenny
once again abandons Forrest and hitches a ride from a random truck

Key Findings:
A rise in the older population, 75 yrs and over, from 9% to 13% (29,000) of the total population is
estimated by 2031 for Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot.
An increase in chronic conditions such as circulatory, respiratory diseases, cancers and in the
economically and care dependent populations is therefore likely.
Over one third of households in Swansea contain at least one older person with 26% of households
being occupied solely by older residents this will undoubtedly have implications for future caring and
service provision requirements.
Admissions for pedestrian injuries in 70 89 year old remain higher in those from the most compared to
the least deprived areas as the gap remains unchanged. 30
The crude hip fracture admissions rate in Swansea residents over 75 years has remained largely
unchanged over the last decade with women being roughly double the rate of men.
There are differing rates of hospital utilisation in Swansea in residents aged under 75, with statistically
significiantly high emergency admission in 18 of Swansea s 31 areas, but with a small proportion of
areas with high rates of elective admission.

Nuclear Energy Is A Threat Weapon Of Mass Destruction
Introduction It all started in the 1940 s, when two atomic bombs, Fat Man and Little Boy were
dropped onto innocent Japanese civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the aftermath of the
catastrophic attacks, nuclear energy was being rebranded as a clean and safe energy option for a
brighter future. The country was split. On one hand, nuclear energy was the key to a more green
future, but on the other hand, it was a potential weapon of mass destruction. Today, over 439 nuclear
reactors are operating in 31 countries. The energy from these plants provide more than 14% of the
world s electricity.
What is Nuclear Energy? Atoms are the basic building block for almost everything in the universe.
They consist of a nucleus, made up of protons and neutrons, and an electron cloud surrounding it.
When the bonds holding the nucleus together are broken through nuclear fission, tremendous energy is
unleashed; this is nuclear energy. During nuclear fission, a neutron collides with a uranium atom and
splits, discharging huge amounts of energy in the form of radiation and heat. Additional neutrons are
also released when a uranium atom splits and they go on to hit even more uranium atoms; this starts a
nuclear chain reaction. Nuclear chain reactions are measured in a nuclear power plant to control the
amount of heat produced. Most power plants use a special type of uranium, called U 235, for nuclear
fission because its atoms are easily split apart. While normal uranium is about a

The Advocacy Of Women s Rights On The Grounds Of...
Feminism. The advocacy of women s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality
to men. Why are some people so angry or offended when they hear this word? Why does the idea of
women being equal to men annoy and infuriate them? Do they not believe that women should have the
same rights as men? Should women have to cover up to avoid being cat called by disgusting men?
Should women have to cover up to avoid being molested or raped? Should women have to stay quiet
when they are raped or abused because no one would ever believe them? Should woman be told what
to wear, say, or do with their body? I ask myself these questions every day. The question that I ask
myself the most is, Why are women of color, gay, and transgender women constantly being
disrespected?
Woman as a whole get disrespected on a daily basis. We get cat called, get told what to do with our
bodies, victim blamed, our bodies are over sexualized, and were viewed as weak and just a piece of
meat. Being a woman is already scary enough but being a gay, transgender, or woman of color is the
most terrifying experience. Its seems as if the more melanin your skin contains, the more disrespect
you receive. Why is that? Although being a woman is hard, being a white woman gives you so much
more privilege than what a woman of color gets. First of all, white woman are seen as beautiful and
attractive because of their skin. They aren t constantly told that their skin is too dark or ugly because

Drinking Water Safety Is Not New
A pressing issue in todays society is the growing concern over the accessibility of safe, clean drinking
water. Following a crisis in Flint, Michigan, where public officials ignored dangerous levels of lead in
the city s drinking water and thousands of children were exposed to dangerous levels of lead in their
water. Beyond the obvious issues in Flint, however, there remain many problems surrounding safe
drinking water. Though options to fix these problems exist, it remains challenging to find a solution
that does not ask too much from small city governments that cannot afford these fixes. Further, this
issue is both partisan, and impacts individuals as well with the potential to raise their taxes and make
them shoulder some of the cost to rebuild and improve the infrastructure of their cities. Though the
United States has some of the safest drinking water in the world, the recent crisis in Flint has brought
the issue of drinking water safety to the forefront as many scandals are discovered and calls for
improvement are made. The issue of drinking water safety is not new, however many citizens do not
appreciate the work and money that goes into providing this water. There are many steps that must
take place, and several systems that clean the water and deliver it to them. The most pressing issues
surrounding this are lead contamination from different pipes and sources, and contamination from the
introduction of chemicals to the water before and after treatment centers

Theme Of Identity In Treasure Island

this process is riddled with ambiguity, including the fact that Jim commits murder and remains
haunted by the experience as a nightmare, (______). He specializes in masculinity theory from novels
written in the late nineteenth century. Kestner is able to relate Jim because he is forced to become a
new person, kill a man to save his own life, and questions why situations happen. Wyeth suggests that

The use of darkness and shadowing conveys a sense of mystery and of the unknown, altogether
foreshadowing events to come. Jim is displayed under a shadow and his mother is in the sunlight next
to the house. Wyeth designed this image to show that Jim is about to go on a mysterious journey, and
his mother is going to stay where she is. Jim states, I said goodbye to mother and the cove where I had
lived since I was born, and the dear old Admiral Benbow since he was repainted, no longer quite so
dear, (57). Jim is walking away from everything that he has ever known and starting his new life as an
adult. Jim s house and his mother are illuminated by the light to show that they are going to stay in a
safe, known place; meanwhile, the darker figures, like Jim, are heading to an unknown destination.
The use of darkness shows that Jim has a dark path ahead of him. Normally, darkness is associated
with evil and corruption, which is fitting for Jim s path. The use of darkness can foreshadow later in
the novel to when Jim kills Israel Hands. Ultimately, when Jim kills a man this shows how he became
corrupt along his adventure. When Jim killed Hands, this showed his transition from innocence to
corruption, which can also be viewed as his maturation to an adult. All transitions can mature us in
both good and detrimental ways this instance happened to be

As the drastic increase of social media networks has increased, so too has the cyberbullying
prevalence. Merriam Webster defines cyberbullying as the electronic posting of mean spirited
messages about a person often done anonymously. Kassandra Gahagan and her fellow colleagues
studied cyberbullying among students and its outcomes. Studies show higher rates of suicidal thoughts
and behaviors with victims of cyberbullying, along with higher rates of depression, anxiety and
paranoia (Gahagan, Vaterlaus Frost, 2015). While cyberbullying can be both intentional or
unintentional, it is a negative process which effects the victim. This includes comments, posts without
consent and messages. The study conducted sought to determine the prevalence of cyberbullying
among young adults and the negative outcomes through asking three questions. While cyberbullying
continues to be an ongoing controversy, depression is steadily increasing among social media users.
Munmun Choudhury and fellow colleagues studied negative affiliation of social media and mental
health, predicting depression through social media use. In another study, Instagram was found to have
a high decrease in quality and amount of sleep (Cramer Inkster, 2017). This in turn effects the user s
mental stability. The study found users showing signs of depression tend to be active during the

Contract Analysis In any contract there are legal and spiritual ramifications that must be taken into

There are many ways to analyze this problem to determine what route I need to take. I feel that I must

Voting Rights Of The United States Essay
Voting Rights in America Since the creation of the United States of America, providing freedom and
opportunity has shown to be the most essential factor that makes the country a desirable place to call
home. However, certain rights have not been preserved for every citizen in society. In the aftermath of
the recent presidential election, the citizens of this country are beginning to realize the importance of
voicing their opinion and exercising the right to vote. Unfortunately, this country has yet to fully
provide equal opportunity for the people it vowed to protect, especially when it comes to voting.
Voting rights are still clearly under attack in our country and intentionally impact those who are of
color and/or who are disadvantaged as well as women and those with disabilities. To begin, the history
of past voting rights is not one that is pretty. For a majority of the early elections in the country, the
only citizens that could vote were white, male property owners. People of color did not receive this
right until far into the future. Alexander Keyssar, the writer of the book, The Right to Vote: The
Contested History of Democracy in the United States, discusses that rights were well overdue for
many Americans. Keyssar states, African Americans could not vote in the South, Asian immigrants
were disenfranchised because they could not become citizens, and Native Americans lacked the right
to vote for more often then they possessed it (Keyssar xx). Although this seems

Reasons For The French Revolution
There were many causes that led to the French Revolution. Class, money, and philosophes were three
major factors that contributed to the French Revolution. The most important cause was money. These
factors resulted in Louis The Sixteenth and Marie Antoinette being executed, and the reign of
Napoleon to begin.
Class conflicts are a huge component of the French Revolution. The French Revolution began as a
result of the lack of the people s happiness over how they were told to live their lives. There were
three estates. The first estate being the clergy, the second estate being the nobility, and the third estate
being the bourgeoisie (commoners). The first and second estate consisted of very few people, but was
given most of the money, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the first and second estate voted that the bourgeoisie should pay all the taxes, the bourgeoisies was
outvoted and was forced to keep paying all of the taxes. The nobility and clergy were very greedy,
especially the clergy. Their morals were supposed to be more focused on the word of god, instead of
being focused on the material aspects of life on Earth. The clergy was supposed to be kind and helpful,
instead of selfish. Since the clergy was greedy, it lead France to be in even more debt and have more
conflicts. There were many privileges only given to the upper classes, which made it unfair. At the
beginning of the French Revolution, the bourgeoisie became very fed up with the inequalities within
the classes. To deal with the inequalities, the estates decided to gather in the tennis courts and take an
oath called the Tennis court Oath. The Tennis court Oath stated that they would not leave until a new
constitution was created. In the end, a new constitution was created and a new form of government
was put into place. The new government was called the national assembly. The national assembly
lasted from 1789 1799 but was then abolished as it upset many people in France because the priorities
of the National Assemblies decisions did not meet the people s needs.
Money was also a major factor to the French Revolution. Once Louis The Sixteenth and Marie
Antoinette became absolute monarchs in 1774, they lavishly spent money. The couple

The Changing of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Essay
The Changing of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Once upon a time is the predictable beginning of a fairy tale and happily ever after is the ending. The
Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving is a classical myth that defies the conventional
standards of a fairy tale. Set in a valley in New England, It s a gothic tale of mystery and suspense that
bears no definite ending surrounding the myth of the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow (Heath
1355). The original text created by Irving was intended for the mature reader, a reader who could

A distinct wording that dates the more recent text is the delivery of an invitation by a messenger for a

word usage in the earlier text was the common language of the day, just as the newer publicationâs
language is used in present day conversation.
Fifty three sketches are scattered in the 121 pages of Browns edition. The depiction of Ichabod Crane
does not match his illustration. He is drawn as handsome as Brom Van Brunt and is not long armed,
lanky, and long legged with a pointy nose (Brown 21). The Headless Horseman is illustrated to
description having sharp and jagged edges with a frightening look. The three books share the narrative
style and ending with only Ichabodâs hat and a crushed pumpkin found and the old country wives
retelling the tale of the Headless Horseman (Rackham 101).
The media mode The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is presented to audiences has changed. The literary
text has been recreated on audio and video. Separate distinct adaptations have been recreated on video

Traditional Culture Vs. Lean In Health Care
Lean culture is the combination of defining customer value, aligning around a common purpose,
striving for perfection while at the same time respecting and developing employees (O Rourke, 2017).
A Lean culture is an important component of a lean program. It serves as the framework in which lean
tools and techniques are utilized. Without a receptive culture, the lean principles will fail. Leaders
must champion a lean environment aligned with the mission, vision and values of the healthcare
organization. In addition, leaders are tasked with creating an organization culture that is receptive to
lean thinking (Going Lean in Health Care, 2005).
A lean culture differs in many ways from traditional organizational culture. Since the traditional and
lean way vary widely, a conversion requires re conditioning of all those involved. The following table
shows the differences between a traditional and lean culture. Table 1. Traditional Culture versus Lean
Culture.
(Going Lean in Health Care, 2005).
A successful and sustainable lean culture requires new behaviors that start at the very top of the
organization. Leadership can drive the Lean culture change process by setting the behavioral
expectations. The behavior and actions will only produce a culture change if they are modeled from
top to bottom. Leaders must remain committed to the process as a new way of doing business
(Rubrich, 2017). They must constantly drive the same message, involve everyone and guide the

How Shakespeare Changed Over Time
Why did people centuries ago use thee and thou and ye when the word you works for all? Why did

can make someone aware of this change. Due to these changes in English since Shakespeare s time,
reading it today occasionally causes confusion, mainly because of words that have changed meaning
over the centuries, archaic language, and stories or sayings no longer in use today. Any living
language will have words that change meaning over time, and proving this is not too difficult. In
Elizabethan English, fantastical meant hideous or unusual (Shakespeare pg. 41), and nice meant
unintelligent (Smith). These may seem quite unusual, but sometimes an answer can be found to how
the word changed. Fathom used to mean to encircle one s arms (Smith). From that, a fathom became a
measurement the length of someone s arm used for measuring the depth of a lake or sea. After years,
fathom also came to mean understanding something deeply. Words can alter greatly over time! ...

innumerable languages around the word use different words for you to show respect or while talking
to a friend. This shows yet another way the English language has

Behind The Bedroom Wall Discrimination
There Is Only One Race, And That Is Human
There should be no discrimination against languages people speak, skin color, or religion.
Discrimination has been a problem for centuries, but just because your a different race or nationality
doesn t mean we are different. There is only one race, and that is human. The text, Behind the
Bedroom Wall talks about a girl named Korinna who is growing up during the holocaust. She has been
taught that the Jews are enemies and that she should not go near them. When she finds out her parents
have been hiding Jews behind her bedroom wall she has choose between what she has been taught or
what she knows is right and what she believes in. The text, Racism in schools is pushing more black

Even though her sample size was not representative of the whole population it was enough to
determine that the main reason why black students are starting to do homeschool is because of racism.
Many black parents describe the white teachers through negative commentary due to their children
being discriminated. There are many white children who have grown up around stereotypes, just like
Korinna in the book Behind The Bedroom Wall. They have been taught to stay away or bully black
children. In the Washington Posts article, Racism in schools is pushing more black families to
homeschool their children the text states, Furthermore, the attitudes and actions of white teachers
(who make up 85 percent of all public school teachers) were questioned by many of the African
American parents with whom I spoke. They consistently portrayed white teachers as overly critical,
unresponsive, unqualified, insensitive, offensive, mean, hypocritical, and using double standards.
Parents of black students are noticing changes in their children s behaviors. Research shows that many
black students are coming home, crying, due to discrimination. This is the reason that black students
are starting to be homeschooled. Further in to the article the text mentions, Certainly, the parents I
interviewed were very much aware of and concerned about the

Athletes Should Not Be Paid For Their Skill
Division I intercollegiate athletics is no easy feat. Whether it is basketball, softball, baseball, soccer, or
gymnastics, athletes devotion and sacrifice is innumerable. Athletes spend countless hours throughout
the year training and performing in competition. According to the NCAA bylaw 17.1, athletes can
only spend 20 hours a week with a maximum of 4 hours a day on athletically related activities. This
rule excludes pre season and post season training which account for the other 50% of the year.
Although most athletes get enjoyment out of simply playing, some athletes feel they should be paid
for their skill. There is an arising controversy regarding athletes not being paid for the amount of
commitment they put into their sport. While ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There have been many scandals where athletes were arrested for betting on sports events and fantasy
sports. For example, in 1997 two basketball players from Arizona state, Stevin Smith and Isaac
Burton, pleaded guilty to point shaving on four home games. These two players intentional missed
shots and cut points in games for money. They made almost up to $100,000 from point shaving.
Ultimately, money made them lose sight of the purpose of playing college athletics which is for
enjoyment. Instead of playing for another two years, Stevin Smith and Isaac Burton served a year in
prison. If athletes are paid, more athletes will face the same fate as Stevin Smith and Isaac Burton
because they will be able to bet without the consequence of the NCAA rule. Although the rule will not
longer be in place, betting on sports is illegal in every state except Nevada, Delaware, Oregon, and
Montana. Therefore, the NCAA would face repercussions because more athletes will be arrested on
gambling charges. In turn, this will jeopardize the integrity of the intercollegiate sports. Instead of
being seen as respectable and admirable athletes, intercollegiate sports will be seen as full of money
hungry athletes.
Although athletes help generate money for athletic programs and institutions, money distributed to
athletes would limit the amount of money available for other necessities. Many people believe athletes
deserve a share of the money they generate through the sale of

Laertes And Hamlet Foils In Shakespeare s Hamlet
Many Shakespearean plays reflect views of the time in which they were written. They convey this
through common themes. These themes often define a character s specific personality and
characteristics. In Shakespeare s Hamlet, Laertes serves as a foil for Hamlet in which their contrast
presents pivotal themes that reveal Hamlet s character. While the play has many themes, morality,
revenge, and honor specifically relate to the contrast between Laertes and Hamlet, consequently
resulting in Laertes purpose as a foil for Hamlet.
Hamlet s religion shapes his view on morality, ultimately guiding many of his actions regarding death.
Hamlet is a afraid of life after death as demonstrated by his reluctance to kill Claudius during prayer.

Hamlet realizes how slow and hesitant he is to kill Claudius following the actor s performance. He
proclaims O, what a rogue and peasant slave am I:/ Is it not monstrous that this player here,/ But in a

watching an actor portray more emotion than he has in his quest for vengeance. Like Hamlet, Laertes
wants to avenge his father, but does it in a much more passionate way. Laertes demonstrates his
passionate response through That drop of blood that s calm proclaims me bastard,/ Cries cuckold to

hesitant. Hamlet and Laertes view honor very differently and through different lenses. Laertes views
family honor as a necessity, but views religious or moral honor indifferently. Hamlet believes that

Milton Friedman Analysis
Who should benefit, and at whose expense when running a business? Milton Friedman maintains that
profit is the only true goal, benefitting the stockholders. However, R. Edward Freeman proposes that
the needs of all a business s stakeholders must be balanced when acting. I support Freeman s view
because the environment has changed since the time of Friedman.
Milton Friedman believes the idea of businesses having some sort of responsibility to society is a
baseless notion, and describes discussions encouraging it as lacking meaningful analysis or precision.
What does it mean to say that business has responsibilities? Only people can have responsibilities

Maintaining an archaic business model would be foolish. Friedman argues that an executive should
not take profits away from the company to donate to the poor due to his own responsibilities. He then
uses this to state that business should never perform any sort of act benevolent to society if it would
not further the pursuit of profits. Unfortunately for Freidman s point of view, the blind pursuit of
profits is more often viewed as wicked and immoral (Friedman, p.222). Government regulation is
much more prevalent. Focusing on profits in today s market would soon lead your business on a sharp
decline. Moving from solely focusing on the duty to stockholders, Freeman suggests treating all
stakeholders of a business as more than a means to an end (Freeman, p.233). This can also benefit the
stockholders, as by focusing solely on increasing profits, firms can often incur the wrath of
government, forcing their hand, much like with the separation of AT T into eight separate companies
(Freeman, p.234). Stockholders are the primary beneficiary of corporation, and their money should not
be spent frivolously, but it would be difficult to turn a profit if your suppliers, employees and
customers all desert you. Each group of stakeholders has their own desires, which must be weighed
and considered, for should one leg of business fall, the entire firm will come tumbling to the ground.
The view that profit is the only responsibility for corporations is outdated. Friedman s argument may
have been valid in the past, but no longer applies. Regulation and law have increased the influence of
other stakeholders. To ignore that fact would be corporate

Benefits Of Same Sex Marriage
Benefit of homosexual Marriage in the U.S.A
How do we look at the gay marriage? Did they have freedom in the U.S? What are their rights? In
1958, the supreme court of the United States said they can t support gay marriage. Through this
journey from that time until now, American change a lot of rules for the gay marriage as a legal
protection against discrimination, they can marry in at least seventeen states and adopt children
(Walter Frank 1).In additional they can get married at most in 36 states(Stewart, Catriona). I do not
look at the same sex marriage as a sin like a lot of religious people. Because they are human like me
just their hormones are different. Also, we live in a civilized country. They have rights to live like
others and have a normal life. The other thing people can t tell they should get married or not? In my
essay, I will argue how U.S.A gives a lot of rights to the gay people. I am not against of same sex
marriage. My purpose of this essay is to look at in general what are the gay rights for adopting a child,
job opportunity, and death and taxes rights. I want to discuss why I agree with the gay marriage and
how the U.S gives to the gay people a lot of rights. In the other words, homosexual people can express
their feeling without fear in the United States. Firstly, in the gay marriage, the question of adoption
always arises, making it one of the biggest issues. At the moment, Adoption in the gay community is
now legal in the United States. Adoption

General Dwight Eisenhower as a Critical Thinker
Strategic decisions made by General Dwight Eisenhower during WWII were significant and give
excellent examples of four components of Steve Gerras Critical Thinking model. Generals during
World War II faced daily innumerable difficult and grave decisions. Critical decisions made during
WWII did not have the depth and speed of today s modern communications infrastructure. Eisenhower
quoted, Making decisions is of the essence in leadership. 1 During World War II, while in command of
the Mediterranean theater, Eisenhower made the strategic decision of making the commitment to
radiate confidence no matter how dire the circumstances or how pessimistic he might actually feel. He
wrote, My mannerisms and speech in public would always reflect the cheerful certainty of victory that
any pessimism and discouragement that I might ever feel would be reserved for my pillow. 2 Critical
thinking according to Professor Steve Gerras is deliberate. Gerras Critical Thinking Model
components are as follows: clarify the concern, point of view, assumptions, inferences, evaluation of
information, and implications. The model is not meant to be sequential or linear, however always
starts with clarify the concern . Evaluation of Eisenhower s decision to radiate confidence no matter
how dire the circumstances in context to Gerras Critical thinking model spotlights clarify the concern

My Love For Dance
When I first started to dance my family was very supportive and helped me prepare. There was never
dancing in my household, dance was an interest I developed on my own. I have a very small family so
it s just me, my mom and dad so we do not have special events with music and dancing. My mom and
dad is very supportive of my dance aspirations. Especially my mom has pushed me during the times
that I no longer wanted to dance and she has encouraged me to keep dancing and keep trying my best.
When I was in my junior year of high school I was questioning if I wanted to dance anymore because
I wanted to feel the freedom of being a normal teenager and go out with friends after school and not
go to dance rehearsals all night long. My mom encouraged me to remember why I danced and that I
have a gift and I shouldn t waste it. Looking back at my experiences of balancing high school and
competition dance I do not regret it. I am very proud that I stuck with it. When ever I have rough day
at dance or am feeling frustrated with it I will always think back to what my mom had said to be and
channel her words of encouragement.
When I was 2 I started dancing and it was more of a let s put you in dance class because you will look

I danced outside my house was at a dance studio not far from my house. The studio is called The

John Howard s Argumentative Analysis
Former prime minister, John Howard s contentious statement that Australians of this generation should

has deepened old wounds that are present from the genocide committed towards Aboriginals of the

Australia has stalled the process of addressing the issues of former governments as the nation
possesses a narrow mindset of not being responsible for other people s actions. Many continue to deny
the existence of the Stolen Generation as Howard stated, I didn t believe genocide had taken place,
and I still don t. (Howard s statement, the Guardian) Due to the failure to act in a just and sympathetic
manner, it has resulted in 16,846 Aboriginal children in out of home care in 2016, in comparison to
2,785 Aboriginal children in 1997. Australia must remove the finger from the national pause button to
provide comfort for the deserving Aborigines who were exposed to prolonged suffering, abuse and
persecution. The past, present and future generations need to apologise as it is a continuous lifelong
struggle for Aborigines as it never goes away. Just cause we re not walking around on crutches, doesn

Australia s patriotic society lacks nationalistic sorrow towards the victims affected by these policies.
This proves that Australians of this generation are obligated to feel remorse as the insensitivity

Piano Pitches
The row in piano part appears fourteen times as segments I to XIV with various contours and
configurations in which the row could either form a melodic line or a simultaneity. As an example, in
mm. 1 3, the pitches produce layers of voices, while in mm. 3 5 selected pitches of the row produce
simultaneities (fig. 9). Repetition of pitches occurs in segments I, II, III, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII, and
XIII; while the elimination of pitches no. 1, 2, and 3 occurs in segments IV and VIII.
Besides segmentation, there are two other things that govern the setup of the row in the piano, one is
the palindromic setting of the row and the other one is a sort of underlying tonal scheme of the song.
The pitches of row form a palindrome in eight different places, palindromes A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and

pitches in the row excluding pitches nos. 1, 2, and 3 that belong to segments IV and V form a

span a little more than three octaves with the lowest pitch is pitch no. 4 (A2) in the middle of

single pitch no. 2 that alternate with the dyads built from pitches nos. 4 and 11 create a palindrome F

As such, for the first time the owners of companies were not directly involved in the day to day
operation of the entities. This resulted in the formation boards of directors charged with overseeing
and charting the direction of these entities. This is now referred to as shareholder capitalism (Grant,
2012), where a firm is to act in the best interests of its shareholders.
This separation of the owners and managers of the business is the central reason for the existence of
what is now referred to as corporate governance. As discussed by Smith (Smith, 1776), Berle (Berle,
1932) and Tricker (Tricker, 2012), this created several differing schools of thought. Concepts now
referred to as agency, stewardship, resource dependence and enlightened stakeholder theories
combined with ideas such as managerial and class hegemony and evolving social stakeholder
philosophies will form the basis of our review into the abilities of boards to act in a self regulating
manner. This paper will explore each of these in an attempt to discern if a pattern either has or is likely

New Public Service
Thus far, it is apparent that there are no prescribed actions that a public administrator can take to stave
off conflict amongst her constituency; conflict will occur, and all will look towards the public
administrator to determine the resolution. In their book The New Public Service, Janet and Robert
Denhardt outline several practical lessons for public administrators who serve in what they call the
new public service. First, they suggest that the public administrator must serve citizens, not customers;
she must focus on the values shared by the citizens as a whole, not the interests of individual
customers. Second, seek the public interest: Public administrators must contribute to building a
collective, shared notion of public interest, and then perform in a manner that is in collusion with this
notion. It is important to note that some would argue this point, saying that while the public interest

Eco tourism
One aspect of tourism which has greatly been considered is eco tourism. As climate change guilt
among tourists grows, many tourist attractions are touting their environmental credentials in an effort
to cash in on the eco tag. We define nature based tourism as the segment of the tourism market in
which people travel with the primary purpose of visiting a natural destination. If we were to draw an
imaginary line through the tourism industry, with one side (the smaller side) representing sustainable
tourism and the other side representing non sustainable tourism, then nature based tourism and cultural
tourism, etc. would span the divide. We equate ecotourism with nature based tourism that falls on the
sustainable side of the line, where impact on the local environment and human communities is low,
direct financial benefits accrue to conservation efforts and the local communities, there is respect for
local cultures and needs, and the experience builds environmental awareness.
As the demand for tourism grows, the notions for eco tourism sometimes drift away from its original
goals. Studies have been conducted on eco tourism which aims to standardize its goals purposes. For

Importance Of The Five Pillars Of Islam
There are the Five Pillars of Faith within Islam, all of which partake in an extremely important role in
the lives of worldwide Muslim adherents. They include Shahada (referring to beliefs), Salat (prayer),
Zakat (charity), Sawm (fasting/Ramadan), and Hajj (pilgrimage). The Five Pillars of Islam are all
different acts of worship to show devotion to Allah that transform and develop individual adherents,
and powers the foundation of Islam and its core teachings. Within the sacred texts of Islam, there are
many Surahs (chapters) of the Qur an and extracts from the Hadith that clearly demonstrate the
importance of the Five Pillars of Islam to adherents worldwide and their lives. Shahada is the
declaration of faith for Islam, Salat strengthens faith and reminds Muslims that Allah is above all else,
Zakat maintains the selflessness of Muslims, Sawm develops self control and rid sins, and Hajj serves
as a penance while strengthening the connection of adherents worldwide and Allah.
The First Pillar of Islam, Shahada, is important to Muslim s lives because it is the first step of

What is a learner profile? A learner profile is a tool that helps educators to explore a student s
background, assessments, interests, strengths, learning styles, the current level of development, and
the priority of learning needs (Positive Partnerships, 2014, Learner Profiles, para. 4). A common form
of disability that requires a learner profile is dyslexia. This disability can affect reading, writing,
spelling, and speaking. School librarians can collaborate, with teachers, to assist students with
disorders, such as dyslexia, to ensure a learning experience that will encourage the student. I will be
creating a profile for a young girl with dyslexia.
The young girl is eight years old and lives outside of the city limits in low income housing. She is the
youngest of three children who live with their mother. Her mother is single and works three jobs to
make ends meet, and tries to be active in the children s lives. She enjoys different types of animals and

Primaries Pros And Cons
Abstract
This paper will talk about the presidential primaries in the United States of America. It will explain
what a primary election is, and where it comes from historically, also how it fits into today s society.
Another topic it will cover is how the primary process has played out so far this year, how some of the
contenders are currently faring in the race for presidency. It will also cover the strong suits of the
primaries and some of the major flaws of the primaries. The last topic this paper will cover is whether
or not the people of the United States should understand and care about the presidential Primaries.
Introduction
The Presidential Primaries is a system put in place to help chose the best candidates for being the
President of the United States of America. Now whether it is or is not an effective system is yet to be
discussed later on in the paper, but it was put in place to help better to represent the people of the U.S.
The presidential Primaries is very crucial to the candidates running for presidency. It allows the public
to see who the candidates are, and how they conduct a campaign against one another.
History of the Primaries The presidential primaries have a long and rich history with the U.S. It goes
back to when George ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A pro is how the modern day primaries are primarily open, which many as long as your registered
voter you can vote, which also gives more power to the people. So the primaries have a much higher
voter rate right? In a sense they do with including all registered voters, so you don t have to be
affiliated with one major parties to vote, but voter participation has also recently been on the decline
until this year where voter participation nationally so far is at forty five percent. So it opens to
everyone, but it also loses its appeal because you no longer have to be part of political

The Social Impact Of A Protest At Kent State Shootings
Another event that eroded support in the war and US Government occured during a protest at Kent
State University. During a protest on May 4, 1970, twenty nine National Guardsmen gathered at the
university to oversee a Vietnam War protest. In the midst of the protest, the National Guardsmen fired
into the crowd of protesters killing four people in the process (Gordon Page 35). This event sparked an
enormous uprising from the public and the event triggered a nationwide student strike that forced
hundreds of colleges and universities to close (Lewis). This strike had a huge social impact and
through the constant strikes and protests that followed the shootings caused the US Government to
lose the trust, respect, and support of many American citizens (Gordon Page 35). The Kent State
shootings were also able to reach the international stage through the abundance of news broadcasts
and songs following the shooting. Ohio, a famous song by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, focuses
heavily on the Vietnam War and the Kent State shootings with lyrics stating, Tin soldiers and Nixon
coming. We re finally on our own. This summer I hear the drumming. Four dead in Ohio (Crosby,
Stills, Nash, and Young) as a direct reference to the Kent State tragedy. A tin soldier is a toy soldier,
mindlessly controlled by its owner (Songfacts Staff). Neil Young was implying with these lyrics that
the National Guard was mindlessly following orders from Nixon. This song became wildly popular

How To Write An Essay On The Catcher In The Rye
The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger is a critically acclaimed and highly spoke of book. The book
Catcher in the Rye is narrated by a sixteen year old boy named Holden Caulfield . This teen adolescent
is not like any other boy you will ever find, Holden is a sixteen year old teen going through the most
difficult times of adolescence and is discovering that no one understands him. Holden is too complex
for our understanding he speaks in his own vernacular as if not one thing or person can understand
him. The story takes place mostly in New York after Holden flunks out of his prep school, Pencey
Prep . Holden travels to New York for three days before going back to his family. In New York Holden
makes many harrowing experiences that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The book shows how the misunderstanding of one struggling teen adolescent can affect their very
outlook on life. To many people Holden is negative, rude, depressed, etc. But once you try to put
yourself in his shoes you realize that Holden is seeing how the world really is and he is showing that
yes there are negative parts in life but there are also positive parts in life as well and how he knows
why things happen for a reason from his brother Allie dying of Leukemia to seeing his loving kid
sister Phoebe. To me the book has it s rough spots and it s great spots, I like how the book starts out in
first person when Holden says, I m not going to tell you my whole goddamn biography or anything.
this gives you a quick first look at Holden s true character and how he speaks his mind with everyone.
The book also has some bad parts such as when Holden starts to digress like when he mentions his
brother Allie, his sister Phoebe, or his brother D. B. it starts to bore me when he goes into
extraordinary detail about something that doesn t need to be covered that much. Overall I really
enjoyed the book and the story

The Meiji Restoration
During the Meiji Restoration, Japan went through many changes as it was exposed to foreign powers
such as Europe. One of the political changes that occurred was that Japan was forced to begin
interaction with their foreign peers as they came with their several innovations that were incredibly
advanced compared to what Japan could offer at the time. This not only exposed their in ability to
compare to their peers, it also revealed that they were technologically backwards in the eyes of their
peers. As Japan continued to interact with their neighbors, Japan adopted several sayings that
embodied the goals they had in the effort to catch up to and match their foreign peers as well as other
changes in the effort of forming a new society that can match their peers. When Japan became open to
the world powers like Europe, Japan went through a transformation that modernized Japan and
inherently changed their society to reflect something similar to those in European countries. In Japan,
their first reaction to being forced out into the open interaction with powers like Europe was to
immediately develop ways to match their power. One of their reactions included adopting sayings that
stated goals for Japan that would benefit its power. Another response was to authorize new official
documents that affected Japan as a whole. A large change that occurred was the shift in government,
shifting from feudalism to an empire with a single emperor. These changes were factors that in time
shaped

  • 2. How the Hippies Counterculture Transformed Music Essay In the 1950 s and 1960 s, rebellion and music were synonymous. The 1950 s brought widespread attention to a new kind of music coined as Rock n Roll . Because parents deemed the music as sinful, the youth used it to establish an identity for themselvess. In the 1960 s, the rebellion was given a collective charge when young adults voiced displeasure over the country s entrance into the Vietnam War and the use of nuclear weapons. One group within this movement was coined the hippies . In his book titled The Making of a Counterculture: Reflections on the Technocratic Society and Its Youthful Opposition, historian Theodore Roszak described a counterculture as typically involving disapproval or an attempted dismissal of those institutions which presently hold some level of dominance, while simultaneously having hope for an improved life in a new society, in terms of thinking and being. There has been some level of debate, discussing whether or not the hippie movement of the 1960 s and 1970 s matched this definition. Was the movement solely a product of the hippie s clustered university lifestyle, where common experimentation with drugs as well as political activism served as their own sources of rebellion? This notion was argued by anthropologist William L. Partridge, in his case study titled The Hippie Ghetto: The Natural History of a Subculture. Roszak argues in his book about a hippie rejection of technocracy: the system of organizations and elite experts that influences society to attach itself to the importance of efficiency, rationalizing, planning, and necessity, which hippies felt was clearly depicted by the nuclear arms race and fight against communism between the United States and U.S.S.R. ... Nuclear Energy Is A Threat Weapon Of Mass Destruction Introduction It all started in the 1940 s, when two atomic bombs, Fat Man and Little Boy were dropped onto innocent Japanese civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the aftermath of the catastrophic attacks, nuclear energy was being rebranded as a clean and safe energy option for a brighter future. The country was split. On one hand, nuclear energy was the key to a more green future, but on the other hand, it was a potential weapon of mass destruction. Today, over 439 nuclear reactors are operating in 31 countries. The energy from these plants provide more than 14% of the world s electricity. What is Nuclear Energy? Atoms are the basic building block for almost everything in the universe. They consist of a nucleus, made up of protons and neutrons, and an electron cloud surrounding it. When the bonds holding the nucleus together are broken through nuclear fission, tremendous energy is unleashed; this is nuclear energy. During nuclear fission, a neutron collides with a uranium atom and splits, discharging huge amounts of energy in the form of radiation and heat. Additional neutrons are also released when a uranium atom splits and they go on to hit even more uranium atoms; this starts a nuclear chain reaction. Nuclear chain reactions are measured in a nuclear power plant to control the amount of heat produced. Most power plants use a special type of uranium, called U 235, for nuclear fission because its atoms are easily split apart. While normal uranium is about a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Voting Rights Of The United States Essay Voting Rights in America Since the creation of the United States of America, providing freedom and opportunity has shown to be the most essential factor that makes the country a desirable place to call home. However, certain rights have not been preserved for every citizen in society. In the aftermath of the recent presidential election, the citizens of this country are beginning to realize the importance of voicing their opinion and exercising the right to vote. Unfortunately, this country has yet to fully provide equal opportunity for the people it vowed to protect, especially when it comes to voting. Voting rights are still clearly under attack in our country and intentionally impact those who are of color and/or who are disadvantaged as well as women and those with disabilities. The clergy was supposed to be kind and helpful, instead of selfish. Since the clergy was greedy, it lead France to be in even more debt and have more conflicts. There were many privileges only given to the upper classes, which made it unfair. At the beginning of the French Revolution, the bourgeoisie became very fed up with the inequalities within the classes. The Tennis court Oath stated that they would not leave until a new constitution was created. In the end, a new constitution was created and a new form of government was put into place. The new government was called the national assembly. The national assembly lasted from 1789 1799 but was then abolished as it upset many people in France because the priorities of the National Assemblies decisions did not meet the people s needs. Lean In Health Care Lean culture is the combination of defining customer value, aligning around a common purpose, striving for perfection while at the same time respecting and developing employees (O Rourke, 2017). A Lean culture is an important component of a lean program. It serves as the framework in which lean tools and techniques are utilized. Without a receptive culture, the lean principles will fail. Leaders must champion a lean environment aligned with the mission, vision and values of the healthcare organization. In addition, leaders are tasked with creating an organization culture that is receptive to lean thinking (Going Lean in Health Care, 2005). The following table shows the differences between a traditional and lean culture. Table 1. Traditional Culture versus Lean Culture. (Going Lean in Health Care, 2005). Why did people say, let us go presently (Shakespeare) and mean let us go immediately? Because the English language changes, like every other living language. Words are always changing, making it quite interesting, and a bit confusing, to read books written a long time ago. Reading Shakespeare s plays can make someone aware of this change. Due to these changes in English since Shakespeare s time, reading it today occasionally causes confusion, mainly because of words that have changed meaning over the centuries, archaic language, and stories or sayings no longer in use today. Any living language will have words that change meaning over time, and proving this is not too difficult. In Elizabethan English, fantastical meant hideous or unusual (Shakespeare pg. 41), and nice meant unintelligent (Smith). There are many white children who have grown up around stereotypes, just like Korinna in the book Behind The Bedroom Wall. They have been taught to stay away or bully black children. In the Washington Posts article, Racism in schools is pushing more black families to homeschool their children the text states, Furthermore, the attitudes and actions of white teachers (who make up 85 percent of all public school teachers) were questioned by many of the African American parents with whom I spoke. They consistently portrayed white teachers as overly critical, unresponsive, unqualified, insensitive, offensive, mean, hypocritical, and using double standards. Parents of black students are noticing changes in their children s behaviors. Research shows that many black students are coming home, crying, due to discrimination. This is the reason that black students are starting to be homeschooled. Whether it is basketball, softball, baseball, soccer, or gymnastics, athletes devotion and sacrifice is innumerable. Athletes spend countless hours throughout the year training and performing in competition. According to the NCAA bylaw 17.1, athletes can only spend 20 hours a week with a maximum of 4 hours a day on athletically related activities. This rule excludes pre season and post season training which account for the other 50% of the year. There have been many scandals where athletes were arrested for betting on sports events and fantasy sports. For example, in 1997 two basketball players from Arizona state, Stevin Smith and Isaac Burton, pleaded guilty to point shaving on four home games. These two players intentional missed shots and cut points in games for money. They made almost up to $100,000 from point shaving. Ultimately, money made them lose sight of the purpose of playing college athletics which is for enjoyment. Instead of playing for another two years, Stevin Smith and Isaac Burton served a year in prison. If athletes are paid, more athletes will face the same fate as Stevin Smith and Isaac Burton because they will be able to bet without the consequence of the NCAA rule. Although the rule will not longer be in place, betting on sports is illegal in every state except Nevada, Delaware, Oregon, and Montana. Therefore, the NCAA would face repercussions because more athletes will be arrested on gambling charges. In turn, this will jeopardize the integrity of the intercollegiate sports. Instead of being seen as respectable and admirable athletes, intercollegiate sports will be seen as full of money hungry athletes. Although athletes help generate money for athletic programs and institutions, money distributed to athletes would limit the amount of money available for other necessities. However, R. Edward Freeman proposes that the needs of all a business s stakeholders must be balanced when acting. I support Freeman s view because the environment has changed since the time of Friedman. Milton Friedman believes the idea of businesses having some sort of responsibility to society is a baseless notion, and describes discussions encouraging it as lacking meaningful analysis or precision. What does it mean to say that business has responsibilities? Only people can have responsibilities (Friedman, p.218)1. Corporations are led by executives which are chosen by the owners ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Maintaining an archaic business model would be foolish. Friedman argues that an executive should not take profits away from the company to donate to the poor due to his own responsibilities. He then uses this to state that business should never perform any sort of act benevolent to society if it would not further the pursuit of profits. Unfortunately for Freidman s point of view, the blind pursuit of profits is more often viewed as wicked and immoral (Friedman, p.222). Government regulation is much more prevalent. Focusing on profits in today s market would soon lead your business on a sharp decline. Moving from solely focusing on the duty to stockholders, Freeman suggests treating all stakeholders of a business as more than a means to an end (Freeman, p.233). This can also benefit the stockholders, as by focusing solely on increasing profits, firms can often incur the wrath of government, forcing their hand, much like with the separation of AT T into eight separate companies (Freeman, p.234). Stockholders are the primary beneficiary of corporation, and their money should not be spent frivolously, but it would be difficult to turn a profit if your suppliers, employees and customers all desert you. Each group of stakeholders has their own desires, which must be weighed and considered, for should one leg of business fall, the entire firm will come tumbling to the ground. The view that profit is the only responsibility for corporations is outdated. Friedman s argument may have been valid in the past, but no longer applies. This separation of the owners and managers of the business is the central reason for the existence of what is now referred to as corporate governance. First, they suggest that the public administrator must serve citizens, not customers; she must focus on the values shared by the citizens as a whole, not the interests of individual customers. Second, seek the public interest: Public administrators must contribute to building a collective, shared notion of public interest, and then perform in a manner that is in collusion with this notion. When Japan became open to the world powers like Europe, Japan went through a transformation that modernized Japan and inherently changed their society to reflect something similar to those in European countries. In Japan, their first reaction to being forced out into the open interaction with powers like Europe was to immediately develop ways to match their power. One of their reactions included adopting sayings that stated goals for Japan that would benefit its power. Another response was to authorize new official documents that affected Japan as a whole.
