3. LESSON OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, the student should be able to:
Explain the types of networks.
Understand the features of the types of networks.
5. Personal area network
A personal area network, or PAN, is a computer network
centred on a single person within a single building. This
could take place inside a small office or home.

computer-network
6. Features of personal area network
Communication is short range
It does not consume much power
It is very less in cost and has no complex connectivity
It includes devices like laptops, smartphones, printers, etc.
It supports both wired and wireless connection.
7. Local area network
A local area network is a network that connects computer
systems and devices in a small area, such as an office,
home, or several floors of a building (LAN). Personal
computers, laptop computers, and powerful mainframe
computers can all be linked together using LANs.

8. Features of local area network
It has limited geographical area because it is used mostly at
places were devices are close to each other like an office
building.
Data error rate is very less since data is transferred to a
limited geographical area.
Delay in communication time is short, making it highly
reliable.
It is a private network. It is not controlled by any outside
regulatory body.
9. Metropolitan area network
Metropolitan area networks cover a larger area than that of a
local area network and smaller area as compared to wide area
network. These networks are mostly used as links between
office buildings that are located throughout a city.
10. Features of metropolitan area network
It covers a geographical area wider than local area network but
lesser than wide area network
It is an interconnection of local area networks
It is controlled or owned by a user group or an Internet service
provider (ISP) who sell services to users
There is moderate to high data rates
It helps in the sharing of resources across cities
Metropolitan area network provides uplinks for connecting
local area networks to wide area networks and the Internet.
11. wide area network
Wide area network is a network that extends over a large
geographical area, although it might be confined within the bounds
of a state or country.A wide area network is a collection of local area
networks or other networks that communicate with one another.

and
12. Features of wide area network
It generally covers large distances like states, countries and
continents
Communication media used are satellite, public telephone
networks, cable systems, etc.
Wide area network provides uplinks for connecting local
area networks and metropolitan area networks to the
Internet
It facilitates the sharing of resources globally.
