PyData Frankfurt - (Efficient) Data Exchange with "Foreign" Ecosystems
As a Data Scientist/Engineer in Python, we focus in our work to solve problems with large amounts of data but still stay in Python. This is where we are the most effective and feel comfortable. Libraries like Pandas and NumPy provide us with efficient interfaces to deal with this data while still getting optimal performance. The main problem appears when we have to deal with systems outside of our comfort ecosystem. We need to write cumbersome and mostly slow conversion code that ingests data from there into our pipeline until we can work efficiently. Using Apache Arrow and Parquet as base technologies, we get a set of tools that eases this interaction and also brings us a huge performance improvement. As part of the talk we will show a basic problem where we take data coming from a Java application through Python into using these tools.

Abstract: Integrated Development Environments are at the neuralgic centre of developer activities. For many of us it’s unconceivable to work in complex developments leveraging multiple heterogeneous tools for design, build and test activities without the IDE connecting them all.
IDEs are powerful tools, capable of handling many types of tasks. In many cases, IDEs are perceived as a commodity but this is a naïve approach that ignores the many brilliant features that IDEs can be used for: debugging, code generation, test automation, version control, quality assurance, task & issue management, etc.
During this talk, participants will get an overview of what IDEs mean today, for the newbie, the enterprise and the hard-core developer, will get introduced to key IDE features that every one of us should be using, and will participate on an open discussion about what next-generation IDEs should look like.

As of April '12 we have our major services running on Scala, and we could not be happier. Auto-GWT (auto-gwt.org) is a library for the Google Web Toolkit, that frees your code from unneccessary and complicated boilerplate and at the same time pushes the IDE capabilities to a new level. Auto-GWT is based on Xtend (xtendlang.org).
Xtend is a modern programming language that is 100% compatibly with existing Java libraries and even translates to readable Java source code. With it's slick syntax and powerful features such as lambdas, operator overloading and compile-time macros you can turn any verbose piece of Java code into a small and elegant piece of expressive Xtend code.
In this session we will show how Xtend can be used to program GWT applications and how well the typical GWT idioms are supported by the language.
Functional programming with Xtend
At least since the release of Java 8, functional programming has become mainstream in the Java community. Things like collection processing, lazy evaluation and concurrent programming are much easier to describe in a functional style than in the traditional procedural or object-oriented way.
Xtend is a Java dialect hosted at Eclipse. Designed to remove the syntactic noise, it offers a superior syntax and additional abstractions to provide the full power of functional programming to Java developers. As it compiles to Java 5 code, it will enable functional programming even for Android and GWT developers.
In this tutorial, you will learn the basic principles of functional programming and the Xtend idioms to write code the functional way: concise, easy to understand, and yet powerful. No prior knowledge of functional programming or Xtend required.
Codegeneration With Xtend
Code generation with Xtend provides faster and better supported code generation compared to Xpand. It uses templates with expressions for concatenating strings. Types are statically checked like Java but higher-order functions are supported through libraries. Modules can be created and dependencies injected to customize code generation. The IDE supports features like content assist and debugging.
Gwt and Xtend
Everybody knows : Web is the platform of the future. Developing for the browser unfortunately requires us to learn and write JavaScript. Not only that but we also have to integrate the JavaScript client code with the server side, which often runs on the JVM (i.e. is written in Java). So we have to work in two different languages with completely different tools and APIs, and cannot share code between the client and the server.
The Google Web Toolkit (GWT) provides a way to write your client side web application entirely in Java and have it automatically translated to fast and compact JavaScript. It allows you to access all the browser functionality through a statically typed API. You only have to learn and use one language and you can use your code on the client as well as on the server.
The downside : Java is a bad match for the asynchronous programming model required on the browser and generally forces us to write and read a lot of boilerplate code.

From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.
