This document summarizes a drone efficacy study (DES) that evaluated the impact of drones for locating lost persons in search and rescue events. The study involved 50 randomized trials across 3 sites in Ireland and Wales comparing drone-enabled search and rescue to traditional non-drone search and rescue. On average, drone-enabled search and rescue located persons 191 seconds faster than traditional methods. While drones showed promise, the study found properly utilizing drones for search and rescue is difficult and recommended more research is needed to develop standardized drone-enabled search and rescue processes and strategies.
