I went to the performance of Sense and Sensibility on Thursday night and I sat in the second row,
which was very close to the performance. The layout of the theatre definitely provided a different
perspective depending on where the audience member sat. The theatre was close to completely filled,

Objective/Abstract
Enzymatic transesterification reaction was performed to study the resolution of diastereomers using
1H NMR analysis. The stereo selectivity of acylase I, an enzyme, for a 50:50 racemic mixture of 1
phenylethanol was determined. In the first of a two step reaction, 1 phenylethanol was reacted with
vinyl acetate with the help of acylase I to form an ester, unreacted 1 phenylethanol, and vinyl alcohol.
The unreacted 1phenylethanol was separated from the ester by column chromatography and confirmed

In the first reaction of this experiment, 1 phenylethanol was reacted with vinyl acetate, using the
acylase I enzyme. The enzyme s chirality results in a preferred reaction with one alcohol enantiomer
over the other. In the second reaction, the unreacted alcohol is reacted with (R) ( ) acetoxyphenylacetic
acid to create a diastereomer. By comparing the 1H NMR spectra of the final product diastereomers,
we can determine which alcohol enantiomer the enzyme preferred to react with.
We relied on column chromatography to separate the unreacted 1 phenylethanol from the phenylethyl
acetate ester. Column chromatography is a useful laboratory technique aimed at separating aqueous
and organic components of a mixture.

H NMR Analysis:

The 1H NMRs were produced for all 4 samples, and segments of each can be seen below in Figures 1
4. The integrations at 1.5 ppm refers to the (R) 1 phenylethanol while the integrations at 1.4 ppm
refers to the (S) 1 phenylethanol. I was unable to use my own unreacted alcohol because TLC analysis
shows that I was unable to separate my alcohol from the ester during column chromatography. I used

During the Industrial Revolution, an exponential amount of working class and middle class Americans
moved to the cities, seeking to better their lives and to break away from the American tradition of
farming. Family dynamics also changed due to the Industrial Revolution, making the need for a large

asset. In turn, the number of children in middle class families reduced significantly, giving more
educated women time to accomplish other gratifying goals. Many American women spent their time

Most everyone who has toured coastal California is familiar with the Santa Inez Mountains that form

Introduction The purpose of this experiment is to compare and contrast liquid volume reading values

This was done through use of a graduated cylinder, a serological pipette, and a variable volume
pipette.
In laboratories, many kinds of containers and devices are available for measuring liquid volume. For
example, graduated cylinders are used to approximate measurements, Serological Pipettes are used to
more precisely measure volumes, and variable volume pipettes measure liquids even more accurately.
[1] These containers are labeled with marks or values, normally along the sides, which indicate the
volume they may contain. The manufacturers place the labels through a method of calibration. Since
these containers and devices are all calibrated differently they all have distinct tolerances for
measurement accuracy.
Materials and Methods: The measuring devices used in this experiment are as follows: A Fisher
Scientific 25 mL graduated cylinder, a Greiner Bio one 10 mL serological pipette, a VWR
International 100 1000 mL variable volume pipette, a 20 mL scintillation vial, and a AWS 600 weight
