2. The Variola Virus
Smallpox Smallpox is a highly contagious virus that has no known cure. Variola, is the name of
the virus that caused one of the largest epidemics known to man. Smallpox killed nearly 500
million people in the 20th Century alone. Before Smallpox was eradicated it killed nearly 60% of
all infected people. Smallpoxhas been coexisting with humans for thousands of years and has a very
long history.
Smallpox is extremely dangerous because there is no known cure. Smallpox can spread through the
air and physical contact with the pox marks or anything that the pox marks touch. The Variola

4. Descartes Meditations Ontological Argument Essay
Descartes Meditations Ontological Argument
Descartes s fifth Meditation argument for God s existence relies on an untenable notion that
existence is a perfection and that it can be predicated of God. I shall first explain what Descartes s
argument for God s existence is, and then present his argument in propositional form. I will then
attempt to support the argument that existence is neither a perfection nor a predicate of God.
In our thoughts we apprehend ideas of things. These ideas may reside entirely within our thoughts
or they may exist independent of our considerations of them (Descartes 143). Descartes argues that
the idea of God is that He is infinite substance [eternal, immutable], independent, all knowing, ...

Existence, therefore, should more properly be thought of as a prerequisite for perfection and not
a perfection in and of itself. Descartes disagrees however, and in his reply to Gassendi he argues
that existence is necessarily predicated of God because existence is a part of the true essence of
any perfect being (Plantinga 49). For Descartes, it is not possible for us to possess the idea of a
most perfect being if this being lacks the most important characteristic of existence. If God did not
exist then He would not be the most perfect being, but we clearly have the idea of the most
perfect being so therefore He must exist. The problem with this notion, however, is that Descartes
begs the question by building into premise (2) the concept of a perfect being which has yet to be
demonstrated. In order to demonstrate God s existence, Descartes should not assume, or
presuppose, that which he is attempting to conclude. But by predicating the existence of God in
(2) he has already concluded that which is later restated in the conclusion. In effect, the follower of
Descartes s argument is tricked, for if he or she agrees with the foundational premises for the sake
of the argument (that existence is predicated of a most perfect being), then there is no choice left
but to conclude that God exists.
Further, predicating the existence of a most perfect being based upon the attributes that this being
is believed to possess fails to provide existence to

5. Cereal Marketing Plan Essay
OMG ACTIVE CEREAL
TWO YEAR MARKETING PLAN
By Christine Shao
Name and appropriateness of choice
OMG is a pet phrase among teenagers and also I want to deliver a message to costumers that the
cereal has amazing taste. Our target customers are teenagers, so the word ACTIVE is used to
describe how the teenagers should be.
Summary of market position
OMG Active Cereal is a new breakfast cereal which is based on rice bran. Rice bran has a high
nutrition value and is rich in anti oxidants and beta glucan, which naturally helps lower
cholesterol re absorption. It is made from 100% wholegrain rice imported from China DongBei
where produces the top rice in the world. It is also high in fibre, iron and the B vitamins, B1, B2
and niacin. OMG ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other notable strengths in OMG Active Cereal include:
We will use excellent grocers as global channels of distribution (i.e., Woolworths, Coles, and IGA
etc.)
Our pricing strategy is below most of our competition, giving OMG Active Cereal a competitive
edge with consumers looking for value for their money.
Weakness A major foreseeable weakness OMG Active Cereal may encounter is that the cereal
could be perceived by the public as just another nutritious cereal . There are many kinds of
nutritious conscious cereals in today s market produced by several different companies. Each year,
a few more of these cereals are created and placed on each and every grocer s shelves. A weakness
for our newly released cereal could be that breakfast eating consumers will group OMG Active
Cereal along with the average nourishing cereals before eating or becoming cognizant of our cereal
s fantastic features other than especially served for the teenagers.
Threat OMG Active Cereal s most noteworthy threat is that soon, many cereal companies will also
release a breakfast product that focused on teenagers.
Opportunity Compared to the rest of the market, OMG Active Cereal s most notable opportunity
is that it is the first cereal which is especially served for the teenagers at the ages of 13 years to 19
years.
Competitor analysis

How Concentration and Temperature Affects the Rate of Reaction between Magnesium Ribbon
and Hydrochloric Acid.
WHAT I AM INVESTIGATING
I am going to investigate how concentration and temperature affects the rate of reaction between
magnesium ribbon and hydrochloric acid.
MY PREDICTION
The thing which I expect to happen is the more acid added to water the faster the reaction will
happen. Also the hotter the solution the quicker the reaction will happen.
THEORY TO BACK UP PREDICTION
This will happen because when the temperature increases it will give the particles energy which
will make the particles move quicker causing more particles to collide this will make the reaction
quicker. I predict that these factors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also I will keep the amount of concentration the same. The measuring cylinder will only hold 10ml
of liquid therefore I will have to measure 5 lots of liquid each time.
The equipment that I will use to keep my experiment accurate is a cylinder to measure the water
in, and the same for acid. I will also use a stop watch to keep the time accurate. Also to make sure
that the experiment is a fair test and to make it more accurate I will do the experiment three times.
I will keep these things the same because I want the experiment to be a fait test. (Keeping the
amount of concentration the same, the length of the magnesium strips the same)
I will have change the amount of acid and the amount of water in each experiment. I am going to
keep the magnesium strip the same for each experiment. I am going to use measuring equipment
such as a cylinder so that I keep the experiment accurate and fair. I will use a stop each which will
also keep the experiment accurate. I m going to do the experiment three times so that the
experiment can show an average which will give a better and fairer result.
Method
В· First I will get my equipment set up ready to start the experiment.
В· Then I will measure out the acid and water and place them in a beaker. I will keep the solution

8. William Shakespeare s The Twelfth Night Essay
This semester we have learned about the differences that exist between theatrical and cinematic
elements in plays and films. Slowly with the knowledge gained, we transitioned into examining the
adaptations of the world famous playwright, William Shakespeare. For this assignment, we were to
choose a modern Shakespeare adaption and compare its successes and failures to its traditional
script. With the choices given, I decided to choose the Twelfth Nightto its modern adaption directed
by Andy Fickman called, She s the Man. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it as an option,
therefore I felt as though it would be a great option to explore. I have seen the movie several
times since its release in 2006, however I was unaware that it was based off a Shakespeare play.
In my opinion, I believe that Andy Fickman did a fantastic job in adapting the play to its modern
audience. I was able to find some similarities and differences between the play and the film. This
paper will highlight each individual aspect of the play, film, its elements and my analysis.
Before distinguishing the details of the adaption, it is important to become familiar with the
original play, Twelfth Night. With some research, I was able to learn Twelfth Night is also known
as What You Will. In addition, the play indicates the end of the Christmas season and a time when
the norms of society were upturned. With this information and my background knowledge of its
modern adaption, I was excited to read the

After the war in Europe had ended, the United States needed to terminate their participation in
World War II. In order to end the war, military action had to be taken against the Japanese so
cause them to surrender. The only issue was finding a way to carry out an attack that would have
low casualties and funding. During the war, the Japanese soldiers fought to the death, including
mass suicides and attacks by kamikazes, or suicide bombings in planes. A land invasion, such as
D day, could have caused a large death toll on Japan, and also cause many Americans to lose their
lives. The United States believed that to end the war they must make a critical blow to the
Japanese. Thus the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings were born. The bombings... Show more

Nagasaki, the secondary bombing location, had its own reasons for its selection. Although, It
was believed that the mountains and the strange lay out of the city would reduced the area of
destruction, it had been chosen as a target because it was one of the largest seaports in southern
Japan and contained many factories that made ships, military equipment, and other war
materials. The combined destruction of these cities was thought to finally cause Japan to
surrender unconditionally. On the morning of August 6, 1945, about an hour before the bomb
exploded over Hiroshima, Japanese radar had detected American aircraft off the coast of
southern Japan. As the planes grew closer japanese operators had determined that the group of
planes was very small, too small for an air raid or bombing run. They concluded that the planes
were only gathering information, and decided not to take any action against them. This was a
deadly mistake for the Japanese. At 8:15, the Enola Gay, an American B 29 bomber flew over
the city of Hiroshima. At 30,000 feet the plane dropped it load, Little Boy, the world first atomic
bomb. The bomb fell to 1,900 feet and then detonated over the city. The bomb exploded with a

Bullying: More Than Just Taking Someone s Lunch Money Society tends to have a set definition
of what normal means as well as how people should behave. The view a population has on
normality is an outcome of culture, individuals, and the environment that surrounds it. A person is
raised to regard behavior in a certain way, which tends to result in them having a fixed opinion of
what is acceptable. An issue of this phenomenon arises when people cannot endure others having a
different standpoint on what is customary. It causes individuals to argue and leads to the inferior
giving in, submitting to those whose views are much more socially accepted. When the majority

There is always that one thing, be it small or large, that separates a person from the crowd. In
Kenji Yoshino s The New Civil Rights he supports this idea, claiming that in our increasingly
diverse society all of us are outside the mainstream in some way (552). People are bound to be
different, as they each have their own experiences that molds their personality. Therefore, it is
impossible for everyone to be normal if a population is filled with unique individuals with various
characteristics, yet, society seems to always find a way to define normality and set the standard. It
decides which traits are unique, eccentric, or quirky, and which are strictly abnormal, and therefore
shunned. When this occurs, other members of the community have little problems ensuring the
different individual knows they do not fit in. People do this because they do not take to time to
understand individuals who are labeled abnormal. It is a result of their own laziness and lack of
desire to be educated about them; they decide automatically that those human beings are deemed
less without getting a chance to know them. This phenomenon occurs frequently with the LGBTQ
community. The population decides that not being heterosexual or cisgender is grounds for bullying,
and that being part of that faction is too different to be a part of their society. This ignorance blinds
them from widening their definition of normality and expanding their views. People have to be
better educated to have more accepting views as it not only limits themselves, but also harms
individuals around

Also, as income increases, households have more and more income that is not spent on basic
necessities and thus can afford to pay more taxes, unlike those with lower incomes. In other
words, a progressive tax helps the government gain revenue to support its society. As a result of
people with higher incomes paying more money to the government, access money can go to
those people who can t afford to help themselves. In addition, it helps create programs for
medical services, fund public education, housing assistance and other welfare programs. This
revenue enhances the opportunities for its lower and middle class citizens (History and Debate
of Progressive Tax). Nonetheless, some conservatives think that progressive tax is socialist
wealth redistribution and state theft because of what the access revenue is put towards.
Conservatives also think that progressive tax is unacceptable because it creates a sense of class
warfare, where the poor and rich don t get along with each other because of the large gap they

19. The Book Of The Courter Castiglione Summary
Would Castiglione Like Competition Shows?
Competition television shows have made the world a better place! In The Book of the Courtier
there is a discussion about characteristics of a good courtier. One of the characteristics was
sprezzatura. This characteristic means that the courtier should go about showing off their skills and
talents in a nonchalance way, even if they worked hard behind the scenes. If Castiglione watched
television today his least favorite genre would be completion shows.
Importance Of Sprezzatura
Castiglione thought that sprezzatura was important to show skill as an effortless talent. He
highlights this point flat out by saying Practice in all things a certain sprezzatura [nonchalance],
so as to conceal all art and make whatever is done or said appear to be without effort and almost
without any thought about it (Bizzell Herzberg, 2001, p.661). Even if a person practiced for hours
on end they should not let others know. Instead the skill should be presented as a natural talent.
Presenting a skill in this way keeps the audience in the dark on the preparation that went into
making the speaker come off as effortless. Consequently this point leads me to believe that
Castiglione would dislike completion shows because this goes against nonchalance.

20. Analysis Of The Poem Jabberwocky By Lewis Carroll
In his poem Jabberwocky , Lewis Carroll tells the tale of a boy warned by his father of the
dangerous creatures that lurk outside, where then the boy goes out and slays one of the most
dangerous, therefore receiving praise and gratitude from his father. Carroll utilizes sound in the
form of made up words, rhyme, and tone to create a fanciful atmosphere that exploits our fear
and curiosity to develop a theme of good versus evil. In this context, man is seen as good while
beast is viewed as evil. This poem takes place in a make believe world formulated in Carroll s
imagination. Going along with the fanciful setting are the fanciful words that the author created
just for this poem. He uses portmanteaus to adjust adjectives to fit into his fantastical setting.
His first portmanteau is slithy (line 1). This is a combination of lithe and slimy . He s using this
to describe the toves (a type of badger) and by creating this new word, it better fits into his make
believe world. The motions of your mouth and tongue when saying the word slithy simply feel
the same as the word s meaning; your tongue moves forward and back actively as lithe implies,
while the slimy part comes with feeling that the word is smooth, it slips with your tongue as you
say it. This adds to the poem s sound because this single word adds texture and meaning to the
poem. Another example of a portmanteau is frumious (line 8). A combination of fuming and
furious, this special word gives a

The chapter that will be discussed in this paper is chapter 3. Chapter 3 tells the of the Parable of
the Burning House. The Parable of the Burning house is essentially a story with a hidden
meaning. The hidden meaning within this parable is practice skillful means. This Parable does
a good job of explaining it through the metaphors and references. To summarize The Parable of
the Burning House, the storyline essentially starts with a householder who was very wealthy.
This householder owned a very big mansion that was hundreds of years old. The mansion being
hundreds of years old, it had to began to rot and fall apart. Despite the house being a mansion, it
only had one door. The owner of the mansion had a lot of children. The children would play
inside of the house. One day, the house caught on fire. The house was being consumed from the
flames of the inferno. The householder managed to escape his house, but his children did not. The
father called for his children to come out of the house. The children were ignorant and were too
distracted with their games and toys. The father had to devise a quick plan to save his distracted
children from the flames. The father was already aware of what the

my opinion Farmer Giles is a hero because his town was attacked by a hopeless giant . That giant
just wanted to find his home so his copper pot does not burn . But instead he got shot by a
blunderbuss . A Blunderbuss is a short range shotgun . Ok let get back on track . So then later the

23. Adoption by Same-Sex Couples Essay example
Adoption by Same Sex Couples
19th Annual Robyn Rafferty Mathias Conference
I. Introduction
In recent years, there has been an increase in same sex couples applying to adopt children at both
infancy and from the foster care system. Although society s perception of a family normally
consists of a mother and father, the times are changing. According to the United States 2000
Census, this societal perception of a normal family, referred to as the nuclear family , only
represents less than 24%, of households in the U.S. The notion of the nuclear family is ever
changing in today s society, and with this change must come a more open view of who can adopt
children. It is clear that there are several issues regarding gay and ... Show more content on

By allowing same sex couples to adopt, children who would normally linger and age out of the
foster care system can be put into permanent and loving homes.
II. Parenting Capabilities of Same Sex Couples One of the main reasons that some individuals
feel that same sex couples should be banned from adopting children is due to the belief that they
are incapable. There are various amounts of scientific research compiled by the American Civil
Liberties Union that shows that the parenting practices of same sex couples are just as good as
those of heterosexual couples. The ACLU released a document entitled Too High a Price: The
Case Against Restricting Gay Parenting. In this document there is a detailed overview of the
scientific research done in this field. This research focuses on the psychological, emotional, social,
and cognitive developments of children raised by same sex couples, the quality of parenting of
these couples, and the sexual and gender development of the child or children in their home. In
looking at these key factors, researchers were better able to make comparisons between same sex
couples and heterosexual couples. These studies used various groups of people including single
lesbian mothers, gay fathers, heterosexual couples, and heterosexual single parents. In order to
conduct the studies, researchers used psychological tactics, which included both interviews and
intensive examinations of both the parents and children.

24. Descriptive Essay On Soccer
For the past five years, I have worked as a soccer referee, and the experience has been very
valuable. I began refereeing at the age of twelve, primarily as a way to earn a little extra money to
buy video games. Initially, I started to referee recreational games for younger age groups at the
local soccer park. However, as my refereecareer began to blossom, I was invited to referee
tournaments throughout Georgia. Fast forward to today, I regularly travel to referee high level
tournaments in Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, and North Carolina. What had started simply as a
part term job has grown into something I plan to continue long into the future. Saying that I am a
soccer referee does not always come with the understanding that it should. Soccer is the number
one sport around the world, and many countries around the world worship their soccer teams as
if it were a religion. The job of being a referee is a pivotal part of the game. As a crew of four, we
are the ones that lead the teams out of the locker room. Subsequently, we are the first to step onto
the field with the ball in our hands in front of thousands of spectators. Afterwards, we are the
people that begin the match. In a sold out stadium, we can control the flow and management of
the match. Unlike the players, we shun the spotlight, but sometimes the game demands our
intervention. For example, when it comes to protecting the players, we are tasked with
managing the players. In many cases brandishing a yellow or red card can destroy a games
livelihood, so instead we manage the players with our whistle tone, body language, and verbal
cues. By doing this, we are able to keep a match appealing. I think the skills and experience gained
as a referee has prepared me well for college. Pursuing a career as a referee is actually quite similar
to preparing for other professions. To be successful in a chosen field, one must be well trained
and determined. Before I could referee my first game, I had to learn what my responsibilities were
as a match official. Our responsibilities include enforcing the Laws of the Game, ensuring fair play,
maintaining player safety, and keeping the official time and score. Other responsibilities start with

The decolorization potential of microorganism was assessed by examining its ability to degrade
various textile dyes. All 10 dyes monitored showed decolorization as follows: Reactive Yellow

(complete decolorization in 6 h), Reactive Blue 160 (complete decolorization in 3 h), Reactive

(complete decolorization in 3 h) and RO16 (complete decolorization in 2 h), while in sterile, cell
free medium decolorization did not occur up to 48 h of incubation suggesting the absence of abiotic
decolorization. As RO16 showed complete decolorization in 2 h, this industrially important toxic
azo dyewas taken for further studies. Lysinibacillus sp. RGS could decolorize RO16 rapidly and
thus was found to be better than the bacterial consortium DAS reported by Jadhav et al (2011).
To confirm the decolorization, UV Vis spectroscopic analysis was carried out. The absorption
spectra of RO16 before and after treatment by Lysinibacillus sp. RGS in visible range were taken.
Peak responsible for absorption maxima of parent dye (495 nm) were completely disappeared in
the sample obtained after decolorization (Fig.S1) confirming the complete removal.

In October, Richard McGinn, its chairman and CEO, was replaced by former CEO Henry
Schacht. Exhibit 2 shows key news events for Lucent during 2000. Lucent attributed the revenue
revisions affecting fiscal 2000 (its fiscal year ended on September 30) to a variety of factors. The
initial $125 million adjustment was due to misleading documentation and incomplete
communications between a sales team and the financial organization with respect to offering a
customer credits in connection with a software license. 1 The company stated that the recorded
sale did not meet its revenue recognition rules. As a result, one employee was fired, and
disciplinary action was taken against several others. In subsequent revisions announced on
December 22, Lucent took back $452 million in equipment that had been sold to systems
integrators and distributors but not been passed on to customers because of their weakened
financial condition. Lucent noted that in verbal agreements it had agreed to take back the
equipment, and it resolved to fulfill this commitment to preserve customer relationships. Also, the
company discovered that sales teams had verbally offered credits to customers for use at a later
date to help secure fourth quarter sales. It decided to reflect the credits as expenses in the fourth
quarter, reducing revenues by $74 million. Finally, revenue had been

Within a multilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, knowledge of the language
of origin of unknown words can improve pronunciation modelling accuracy. This is of particular
importance for ASR systems required to deal with code switched speech or proper names of
foreign origin. For words that occur in the language model, but do not occur in the pronunciation
lexicon, text based language identification (T LID) of a single word in isolation may be required.
This is a challenging task, especially for short words. We motivate for the importance of
accurate T LID in speech processing systems and introduce a novel way of applying Joint
Sequence Models to the T LID task. We obtain competitive results on a real world 4 language
task: for our best JSM system, an F1 value of 97.2% is obtained, compared to a F1 value of 95.2%
obtained with a state of the art Support Vector Machine (SVM). Words, phrases and names are often
used across language boundaries in multilingual settings. Especially for minority languages, such
{it code switching} with a dominant language can become an intrinsic part of the language
itself~cite{modipaimplications}. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are required to
deal with various types of words of foreign origin. For example: automated call routing systems or
voice driven navigation systems often process proper names and foreign words that tend to have
pronunciations that are difficult to predict~cite{reveil2010improving}. These

30. Essay on Religions and Japanese Culture
Religions and Japanese Culture
Many religions are popular within the Japanese culture. Two of the most influential religions, Shinto
and Buddhism that help shaped a lot of Japanese values are Shinto and Buddhism, played a large
role in shaping Japanese values. Numerous similarities and differences run between these two
religions; nonetheless, the Japanese often believe in more than one religion at the same time. This is
possible due to the polytheistic nature of most popular religions in Japan. It is not hard to say
that religion is a big part of Japanese culture because a lot of religious beliefs can still be seen in
their everyday lives. Shinto is a polytheistic native Japanese religion. Followers believe that much

Later on, the Japanese adapted another religion, Buddhism. Like Shinto, Buddhism is also a
polytheistic religion. Moreover, because Shinto does not explain the afterlife while Buddhism
does, these two religions co existed in Japanese culture. Many people adapt to both religions
belief system at the same time. Zen Buddhism became widely adapted by the samurais later on
during the Warrior Period. Zen Buddhism focuses on the discipline of individuals, one of the
many reasons why samurais are seen as very refined warriors. They are often portrayed as being
able to sense an enemy s attacks before they actually happen. This is an exaggeration of a samurai
s ability to concentrate and focus on a goal. The samurais often use a Zen Buddhism technique
called Za Zen to help clear their mind. A practical religion, Zen Buddhism helps to enhance self
discipline and improve one s self concentration. One of the teachings of Zen Buddhism is Bushin,
meaning the clarification of the mind. A cleared mind allows the samurais to concentrate better on
the task at hand and respond faster to enemies attacks, make Zen Buddhism a very attractive
religion to these warriors. Martial arts in Japan today also stress the importance of concentration.
However, Bushin no longer applies to solely concentration in combat, but to all forms of
concentration. For example, practicing martial arts is said to effective for improving one s
performance at work due to better concentration

weapons are actually not dangerous tools for murderers and psychopaths, as they are made out to

For example, assault weapons are equipped with large capacity ammunition magazines that allow
the shooter to fire 20, 50, or even more than 100 rounds without having to reload. Pistol grips on
assault rifles and shotguns help stabilize the weapon during rapid fire and allow the shooter to
spray fire from the hip position. Barrel shrouds on assault pistols protect the shooter s hands from
the heat generated by firing many rounds in rapid succession, is what some anti gunners say. Most
political representatives say that they have high capacity magazines which are to unnecessarily
large to be useful. They claim that they are overkill. These same people do not know anything
about these weapons, if they did they would understand that a 30 round magazine is what comes
standard to these weapons. High capacity magazines that hold up to 150 rounds are available
through purchase but do not come with the gun. Another argument is that they have to high of a
rate of fire. They think that this will enable people to spray many rounds into a crowd or in an
attempt to hurt someone. On the other hand these guns are not fully automatic like the ones the
military use. They are semi automatic which means that one round is fired per trigger pull. There

36. Bullying Is The Intentional Harm Doing Or Harrasement
What is bullying? It is the intentional harm doing or harrasement directed to vulnerable people
and is repeated quite often. Bullying can be done in multiple ways. Some examples are: physical
violence, verbal talk and/or threats and rumors being spread either verbally or online. Bullying can
happen to anyone, but mostly involves kids. There are ways to try and stop it and everyone should
help in getting that rate down. ( Bullying. Britannica ) This isn t something that is to be taken
lightly but many people do, and it stays an issue in many places, especially at schools. A U.S.
national study done at the beginning of the 21st century stated 30 percent of kids, middle to
high school, experienced bullying during their school years. Research shows that it tends to
start during early teen years and decreases in their later teen years, and it is showed to be done
mostly by boys. It can start from reactions to struggles and from power within a group. (Bullying

from homes where the adults fight or hurt each other. When girl s bully, they tend to do it in
emotional ways, such as excluding a certain girl or gossiping about her (Bullying Topic

37. Interpretation Of My Papa s Waltz By Theodore Roethke
A Perfect Balance While the subject of My Papa s Waltz by Theodore Roethke has spurred
passionate academic debate from professors, scholars, and students alike, the imagery, syntax, and
diction of the poem clearly support the interpretation that Roethke writes this ambiguous poem with
the intent to create a controversial interpretationwhich can be viewed as both or either an abusive
or fond memory between father and son. Both interpretations can be supported by multiple pieces
of evidence which creates a conflict for the reader to need clarification for which way to interpret
the poem.
The controversy from My Papa s Waltz sparked due to Roethke s mixed use of words retaining
negative or positive connotations which can support either argument. One word could lead to
either abuse or a memory. For example, the first line of the fourth stanza contains You beat time
on my head which can be seen in a variety of ways. At first glance, it may seem as if the father
physically hit the child with his hand; however, upon a deep analysis, it becomes clear that one
might interpret the word beat as though it s the rhythm of a dance. Roethke makes readers delve
deep into the context just to find both meanings. He cleverly uses diction to require the reader to
reread his poem. Due to the numerous amounts of phrases containing words chosen with positive
and negative connotations, Roethke fabricates a perfect balance which causes the reader to find
difficulty understand the true meaning of My Papa s Waltz.
Although Roethke s use of diction may fuel both arguments, It cannot reveal his intentions
behind the poem alone. He uses imagery to his advantage of this mind game by plugging in
words throughout the poem which captivate the reader and force them to form a mental image;
he does illustrates in My Papa s Waltz by stating The whiskey on your breath could make a small
boy dizzy. This statement reveals how drunk the father is which sets interpretation for the rest of
the poem. Since drinking is one cause of abuse, numerous amounts of people may see the rest of
the poem as the father abusing his child. On the contrast, Others can view whiskey as an expensive
drink only used to celebrate special occasions in the time

38. The Role Of Industrialisation, The Modern State And Ethnicity
One of the most interesting, and sometimes most frustrating, traits of the phenomenon of
nationalism and the nation is the fact that it has no single, clear definition for the subject upon
which all authorities in the field agree. From what a nation is to what kindles the flame of
nationalism that gives birth to them, every scholar to pick up the pen on the topic has their own
view and their own answers to the various questions. This essay will be looking at some of those
views and examining the role of industrialisation, the modern state and ethnicity in nationbuilding.
Some of the approaches outlined will be illustrated through the real world cases of Britain and the
Kurds.
In the study of nationalism, one of the major schools of thought is the Modernist one, represented
by scholars such as Michael Mann, John Breuilly and of course Ernest Gellner. As their name
suggests, modernists adamantly claim that nationalism is something that is entirely a feature of
modern society. More specifically, modernism argues that nationalism emerged with the birth of the
modern nation state, which is to say, following the French Revolution of 1789. Modernism claims
that nationalism will not take root in societies that lack a supreme authority to maintain the unity
and stability, and a strong industrial economy. In the view of most modernist scholars, nationalism
and the symbols it utilises in the process of nation building are but a method of top down control.
Gellner s primary hypothesis

41. Formalism And New Criticism
Formalism is a form of literary criticism that focuses on the formal parts of a literary work. It was
started in Russia in the 1910s by two groups led by Roman Jakobson and Viktor Shklovsky. This
type typically examines the structure of papers closely and relates them to their meanings. This
type of criticism views the work separately from the author and does not account for the author s
emotions or beliefs. Formalists also tend to focuses on the defamiliarization aspect of a work and
how foreign the language can make everyday occurences feel.New Criticism emerged out of
formalism in the 1940s 60s. This school of though typically examines the language used in literary
text to uncover deeper meanings. Like formalism, New Criticism ignores the context of the work
and solely focuses on its contents. They wanted to make intellectual programs more rigorous by
focusing on structure alone.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This form typically focuses on interpreting literary works from a female viewpoint. This often
leads to examining the inherently patriarchal nature of society. Feminist criticism also tends to
raise awareness to marginalizing aspects of language and gender stereotypes that continue to be
perpetuated by society. Another major part of feminist criticism is the frequency with which
these critics tnd to note the differences in style between male and female authors. New
Historicism was developed once critics realized that the old form of hisorividm no longer
satisfied their needs. They believe that history is only one perspective out of many possibility
because every work is biased and subjective. Strongly influenced by Michel Foucault, history
began to be seen as on of the many ways that the past could be revealed. New Historicism believes
that authors cannot escape the culture of the time and, therefore, their works could not be objective.
This leads to critics searching for power struggles among the many

42. Pros And Cons Of Animal Testing
An animal test is any scientific experiment or test in which a live animal is forced to undergo
something that is likely to cause them pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm. As right now,
millions of mice, rats, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs, and other animals are locked inside barren
cages in laboratories across the country. They languish in pain, suffer from extreme frustration,
ache with loneliness, and long to be free. The complete lack of environmental enrichment and
stress of their living situation cause some animals to develop neurotic types of behavior such as
incessantly spinning in circles, rocking back and forth, pulling out their own fur, and even biting
themselves. They shake and cower in fear whenever someone approaches, and their blood pressure
spikes dramatically. After enduring a life of pain, loneliness, and terror, almost all of them will be
killed. There are many non animal test methods that can be used in place of test on animals. Not
only are these non animal test more humane, they also have potential to be cheaper, faster, and
more relevant to humans. Some of this methods are non invasive imaging techniques such as MRIs
and CT scans, computer models and simulations, and stem cell and genetic testing methods. Some
of the experimentations conducted on animals today is required by law, most of it is not. In fact, a
number of countries have implements bans on the testing of certain types of products on animals,
such as the cosmetics testing bans in

43. Parallel Prefix Adder ( Ppa )
Abstract:
Parallel Prefix Adder (PPA) is one of the fastest types of adder that had been created and developed.
Some of the common types of parallel prefix adders are Brent Kung, Kogge Stone, Han Carlson
and Ladner Fischer adders. This paper involves an investigation of the performances of these adders
in terms of computational delay, interconnect usage and power. The investigation and comparison
for all these adders was conducted for 8 bit size. By using the XILINX 14.5 design software, the
designs for above mentioned adders were developed. The simulation result produced the vector
waveform which then shows the computational delay; interconnect usage and power for the adders.
Hence, this project is significant in showing which of these adders being tested perform better in
terms of computational delay, interconnect usage and power.
Key words: Low power; parallel prefix adder; carry save adder; ripple carry adder; han carlson

I.INTRODUCTION
The fundamental operations involved in any Digital systems are addition and multiplication.
Addition is an indispensible operation in any Digital, Analog, or Control system. Fast and
accurate operation of digital system depends on the performance of adders[1]. The main function
of adder is to speed up the addition of partial products generated during multiplication operation.
Hence improving the speed by reduction in area is the main area of research in VLSI system
design. Over the last decade many types of adder

44. Optimism In Voltaire s Candide By Ervin Beck
The article Voltaire s Candide by Ervin Beck discusses many aspects of the novella. Beck
describes how Voltaire divided the novella into three distinct sections, all of which are about the
same in length, that are separated based on where the events are taking place. The first ten chapters
describe the journey of Candideand his friends through Europe. Chapter ten depicts his journey at
sea from Europe to the Americas. The following ten chapters depict Candide in America where he
reaches the seemingly perfect country El Dorado. Beck notes El Dorado, as the unattainable goal,
is geographically most elevated point in Candide s travels. It appears almost midway and is even
more exactly centered in terms of page numbers. It is noteworthy that... Show more content on

Wood remarks that even though it appears there are so many freakish disasters in the novella
and Candide suffers many horrible events throughout the novel Candide is usually optimistic.
There is one important point in the story where the reader gets a sense that candied has lost his
optimism, and it is the only point where the word optimism is used in the novella. It occurs
when Cacambo asks What is optimism? to which Candide replies it is the mania for insisting
that all is well when all is by no means well. Wood also converses that while Pangloss is
considered a philosopher, Candide is one as well. He sees Candide as a philosopher because he
loves to talk about philosophical ideas, but above all he is young, and his youth permits him
attitudes which are not all that far removed from the initial provincialism of his native
Westphalia. And that Candide does find it hard to believe the world is a bad place if his own
affairs are going well. There are many examples throughout the story of Candide being
optimistic especially in the beginning at Thunder Ten Tronckh. He truly believes that he is in
the best place in the world and that his life is so great and the world is a perfect place, when in
reality he only believes this because he has never left to experience the real world. Once he is
forced to see that the world is actually not perfect he begins to realize that there are actually
horrible things in the world even if Pangloss can come up with an explanation for why the negative
things keep

45. Compare And Contrast All Summer In A Day And All Bad
In life, people seem to judge each other based on not only their looks but what they have.
Specifically, when people have things we don t. Ray Bradbury shows this theme in his short
story All Summer in a Day. Additionally, the song All Bad by Justin Bieber comprises a similar
them. Both of these stories reveal a universal theme about not judging people based on what they
have that you don t. In both All Summer in a Day and All Bad we learn that jealousy can affect
the way people act and it can make them cruel. However, although these stories are very similar,
the way the themes are portrayed draw out differences. For starters, a common theme revealed in
both stories is not judging others for something you desire to have but can t.

46. The Serial Podcast, By Sarah Koenig
Adnan Syed is accused of murdering his ex girlfriend, and various factors present him as a very
likely suspect. Information put together by the state don t add up, but instead prove he is
innocent. Is Adnan guilty or innocent for his ex girlfriend s death? In the Serial Podcast, journalist
Sarah Koenig discusses the case, committed almost seventeen years ago, and uncovers new
evidence that indicates Adnan s innocence. Adnan Syed has been viewed as a boyfriend, honor roll
student, and a murderer. Many described him as a smart, flirtatious, and a likable high schooler. On
January 13, 1999, his ex girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, was murdered. Investigators immediately assumed
Adnan as the primary suspect because Hae had broken up with him, a month... Show more content

He wasn t. I was like he s a p...I m trying to conv explain I m seventeen, like He s a player! He has
a lot of girls! (Episode 2: The Breakup p. 37). Undoubtedly, Koenig asserts an exceptional point,
Adnan is popular among the females in his school and he most likely isn t completely devastated
by their breakup. Although he was a bit emotional, he moved on. Others also advocated a similar
statement, But nearly everyone I ve spoke with, Adnan s friends and teachers say he took the
breakup like anyone would. Adnan s friend Mac Francis said Adnan initially was devastated and
jealous about the new boyfriend. Said he grumbled about it in a typical guy way, nothing
strange. Everyone I talked to said some version of this, that he wasn t rage filled or vindictive.
He was just sad (Episode 2: The Breakup p. 36). Sarah Koenig asked many people and none of
them announced anything extreme between Adnan and Hae after their breakup. After analyzing
these pieces of evidence, one can infer the claim of being upset over Hae isn t verified through
anyone. Another component to Adnan s innocence would be Asia McClain and the library.
Thereafter, a witness, Asia McClain, had physically spoken to Adnan when he allegedly murdered
Hae. Asia McClain was a high schooler that attended Adnan s school and composed a couple
letters to him after he was arrested. One of these letters reads, Dear Adnan I hope I

47. How Does Glaucoma Cause Severe Blindness
Glaucoma is an eye disorder that cause severe blindness. There are multiple types of Glaucoma
however, they all have something to do with damage to the optic nerve (usually form high eye
pressure) that sends and receives information to the brain form the eye. Glaucoma can be a very
dangerous disease although it is no fatal but it can contribute to the failure of one of the bodies
most important senses which is blindness. In most cases, glaucomais correlated with high pressure
inside the eye(ocular hypertension),but it also can occur when intraocular pressure (IOP) is normal.
If left untreated glaucoma first causes peripheral vision loss and eventually leads to total blindness.
At first Glaucoma does not have any visable symptoms
