Peter Singer s The Singer Solution To World Poverty
The Declaration of Independence guarantees everyone the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness. In many ways, those inalienable rights are tied into many aspects of the stereotypical
American lifestyle. There is the idea of the American Dream, consisting of a nuclear family living in a
nice house with a white picket fence, a well cared for lawn, and a car in the driveway. As we all know
this is a very atypical scenario for most of the planet. According to DoSomething.org, more than three
billion people live on less than $2.50 a day, with 1.3 billion of those people living in extreme poverty,
characterized by extreme poverty (less than $1.25 a day) ( 11 Facts About Global Poverty |
Dosomething.Org | Volunteer For Social Change ). With such a large economical gap shouldn t people
feel more compelled to act up and donate money to a cause? This is the question that author Peter
Singer explores in his essay The Singer Solution to World Poverty, with entails people being radically
philanthropic, giving away all money that isn t used on necessities. While this method seems like the
most charitable course to take, humans enjoy luxuries and do not care for everyone equally. There are
many moral dilemmas in which there is a deviation from what is right in the utilitarian point of view
and the morals that current society holds.
While it is important to look at Singer s specific argument, it is also important to take a step back and
look at where he is

The fruit peel of Lansium domesticum, var. pubescens ( thicker than that one of the sweeter var.

you do a science project yourself, and do you have to write an abstract, or do you just have to describe
what it is? I could not quite understand this.... but I can give you a general description of what it is. An
abstract is basically a summary of a research project. It will usually describe four different things: 1.
the objective (background) of the study, 2. the methods used, 3. the results found, and 4. the
conclusions. It is usually very short (one paragraph), so it needs to describe all these things in a very
compact, yet clear way. Abstracts are usually a part of a scientific publication, usually printed at the
beginning. When researchers search in databases for relevant publications, they will search for
keywords, and then a number of publications will pop up (similar to a Google search). In their result
screen, they will see the abstract and read them to decide if they want to read the whole paper or not.
So the abstract needs to be attractive and clear. The journal that you want to publish your research in,

Evolution Of Sexual And Sexual Selection
This article focuses on the evolution of sexual differences in insects. Intense sexual selection due to
competition for mates is the main driving force behind the evolution of such variations. Males produce
smaller and more numerous gametes than females and often competition between males is greater than
that between females. It is suggested by the authors that the material contribution by each of sexes to
the next generation is what determines the reproductive rate of the population. In an instances where
one sex contributes more to the reproduction and survival of the offspring than the other this sex will
become the limiting factor for sexual selection, and will be subject to greater loss of fitness if an
importer mate choice is made. In terms of contribution to offspring both male and female can provide
care in various ways. The relative investment of each sex will determine the degree to which the one
sex competes for the opposite one. The observed sexual differences proved a clue about the intensity
of sexual selection in particular species. Usually females contribute more to the offspring care and are
the limiting factor for sexual selection, as a result males exhibit more variations in secondary sexual
characteristics in terms of morphology and behavior. In species that male provide more care the roles
are reversed. Though direct care is not common in insects the males might contribute indirectly by
protecting the female after mating as observed in several

While others may say that those who are deeply rooted in their religion have the right to express their
beliefs just as members of the LGBTQ community have the right to express their sexuality, it is
unconstitutional and frankly frowned upon in most religions to treat others with anything less than the
respect that they deserve solely because their choices may not align with a certain religion s beliefs.
As Christians, as with any other religion, you have the freedom to express yourself without
persecution but, as we all know, one of the greatest and most important commandments in
Christianity, as stated in Mark 12:31, is Love your neighbor as you love yourself (The Holy Bible).
Though the bill of rights states that any person born in America has the freedom of religion and the
freedom to practice whatever actions that belief may entitle, our constitution also states that we have
the freedom of expression. By passing bills such as HB1523, we are further proving that
discrimination is a prevalent problem in America s society. America is known to be the land of the
free. While some may say that this only means that American citizens are not kept in bondage and are
allowed to make their own decisions, it also means that we were born with the freedom to be who we
are. How can anyone live the American dream if they are constantly being frowned upon and judged
by others?

Timbuktu Research Paper
In the Ancient World, cities played vital roles in advancing and improving society. They were the

In the following piece of evidence, D, the graphic, from a Catalan Atlas in 1375, clearly depicted West
Africa as an extremely wealthy Old World power, with Mansa Musa sitting on his throne of gold.
After going over these pieces of evidence, Timbuktu was a trading capital of the Old World, a center
of scholarship and education, and what appeared to be the wealthiest city in the world at its time. But
like all like all great cities, who fall because they lose what originally makes them great, Timbuktu fell
as well. Ultimately, Timbuktu fell because as the Americas were more drawn into trade and trade
relied much more on sea, Timbuktu received less traffic and eventually became bypassed. Also,
because Timbuktu was so powerful, the West African trade civilizations expanded so much that it
became hard to enforce power over all of their land, which ultimately led to collapse. To summarize,
Timbuktu and the civilizations that ruled it ultimately fell because the trading world came to bypass
them, and they grew so much that it became hard to maintain

United Airlines Adoption Paper
United Airlines customers got an unwelcome surprise this morning: Domestic departures were delayed
more than a half hour because of what appears to be incorrect dispatching information in the airline s
computer systems. About 150 United Airlines flights were grounded. United Airlines aircraft were
held on the ground across the United States for nearly 40 minutes early Tuesday for unexplained
technical issues, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA gave the reason for the
rare complete ground stop, which affected hundreds of flights, as automation issues. The stop began at

aircraft departed with proper dispatching information. We resumed departures at about ... Show more

The media can of course have good resources: education and entertainment, but at the same time can
be very toxic to kids. It can result in destructive mind sets and berserk attitudes in both boys and girls.
With the media, children are bombarded by sexual images, drugs and drinking day in and day out.
Popular children TV channels like Nickelodeon and the Disney channel have shows where kids are
kissing and showing small suggestions of sex. Kids are like sponges: they soak up everything they see,
hear and learn. Those in the media need to understand that whatever they do is being viewed by kids
all over the world and they are thinking it s okay to behave in an inappropriate manner. The media is
definitely one of the most dominant encouragements to the fast maturity seen in the children of today.
It is no surprise that with the whole new world of technology young children nowadays are becoming
more and more obsessive in this realm, both at school and at home. Due to the massive influence of
technology, children are learning more, forcing them to grow up quickly and take on a lot more than
past generations did. Research taken by Internet security company AVG shows that more small
children can play a computer game than ride a bike. 58% of children aged 2 5 know how to play a
basic computer game. For the UK and France that jumps to 70%. Even 44% of 2 3 year olds have the
ability to play a computer game. By comparison, 43% of kids 2 3 can ride a bike . These

Use of Persuasive Argument in 12 Angry Men Essay
The movie 12 Angry Men examines the dynamics at play in a United States jury room in the 1950 s. It
revolves around the opinions and mindsets of twelve diverse characters that are tasked with
pronouncing the guilt or innocence of a young man accused of patricide. The extraordinary element is
that their finding will determine his life or death. This play was made into a movie in 1957, produced
by Henry Fonda who played the lead role, Juror #8, and Reginald Rose who wrote the original
screenplay. This essay will explore some of the critical thinking elements found within the context of

each of these points and makes credible arguments that the conclusion is flawed based on incorrect

Women Leaving Her Husband Analysis
Butler explains to her readers the ample reasons why wives of the medieval time period would decide
to leave their husbands. In fact, on page 338 of her article, Butler writes, The goal of this paper is to
provide a more comprehensive perspective of husband desertion, including the risks involved in
deserting one s husband, the wife s motivations, and the logistics of desertion (Butler 338). She begins
her article with some background information in hopes to enlighten her readers that at this point in
history, men had all the power in any marriage. Following the brief history of the misogyny found in
medieval marriages, Butler uses the rest of her article to explain to her readers the trials and
tribulations these wives had to go through, the risk of others knowing she wanted to leave, and what
made the wives want to leave at all. Butler first chooses to explain what the risks were when a wife
left her husband during the medieval era. Due to the misogyny found in medieval marriages, if a
woman decided to leave her husband, she had to be well aware of the consequences that would follow.
For instance, Butler points out to her audience that if a woman decided to leave her husband, then
must live with the label of adulteress. This label guarantees that this woman would never be able to

Confucianism vs Legalism
Chen Hanyu A0110820B Tutorial D5
Question 1: Introduction
For this paper, I will be discussing two opposing ideologies, Confucianism and Legalism. Towards the
later part of ancient China (e.g Han dynasty), states started to adopt a mixture of Confucianism and
Legalistic ideology. Why did Legalism and Confucianism fall off?
In this paper I will explore and provide my own insights on the shortcomings of both ideologies; how
Legalism was more persuasive in getting people to accept their ideas and more effective as an
ideology and how Confucianism lost out in both aspects.
Persuasiveness of Legalism
The central idea of legalism was to provide absolute power to the person in charge and the supremacy
of authority. Legalists like Han Fei Zi ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although it was well known that Confucius was elevated to high status after his death, his political
career was not as successful. Confucius spent many years trying to promoting his ideas to rulers in
different states but was not able to get through4. To understand why such a visionary philosopher
could not get others to agree with him, we will have to look at the nature of the Confucian theory and
why was it incapable of persuading the lords of countries.
Firstly, Confucianism prized the rule of men over the rule of law; that is to promote harmony in the
people over the interest of a ruler. If a ruler has appropriate personal conduct the government will be
effective without needing to issue order. However, the ruler do not have the correct conducts, his
orders will not be obeyed.
Secondly, Confucius viewed rules and laws as harmful. He argued that people led by laws and
punishments will try to avoid punishment but lose the sense of shame. If they are led by virtue and
guided by propriety, they will preserve their sense of shame and become good citizens5. He saw a
country as an extended family and a ruler should take care of his citizens like a father would take care
of his children. The ruler as the father would need to set a proper example for the right ethics to flow
down5.
Thirdly, the Confucianism school did not value institutions in inducing desirable

Taraji is modest about her singing talent, she gives a riveting performance in this movie particularly
on the song It s Hard Out Here for a Pimp. I was unsure that it was her really singing until I found out

Why would you want to change your coordinate reference system during any analysis? Remember
that a coordinate reference system is a special type (and thought of as a key component) of the broader

The difference between a coordinate reference system and a projection (transformation) are that a

Superstition Is A Superstition, And Where Do They Even...
Even in this modern day and age, we find ourselves being cautious around mirrors, knocking on wood,
and going a different way when a black cat crosses our path. Don t try to deny it, you ve gotten jumpy
on Friday the 13th, and maybe some of you (like me) hold your breath when you pass a graveyard.
You know what I m talking about. Superstitions. Now, be honest, how many of you started humming
that song, Livin la Vida Loco ? My point is that we follow these superstitions for no reason at all,
oftentimes without knowing why, or even what it s supposed to do for us. What exactly is a
superstition, and where do they even come from? Storks?
Alright, let s try to establish a definition of superstition. According to my sister, Superstition means
rules we follow and we don t even know why because we re afraid of something happening, and we
don t know what. Okay, that s pretty accurate. Personally, I think superstition is any belief people hold
and follow for good luck. Or to avoid bad luck. But according to Wikipedia: Superstition is the belief
in supernatural causality that one event causes another without any natural process linking the two
events such as astrology, religion, omens, witchcraft, prophecies, etc., that contradicts natural science
(Wikipedia Superstition ). Anything science doesn t tell us, we will invent something and tell
ourselves. So, we have established that superstition means finding connections that science doesn t
support , but that still doesn t

The History Of Sexuality, By Michel Foucault
In the History of Sexuality Vol. 1, Michel Foucault writes the body as a constructed and manipulated
agent, the locus of sociopolitical discourse and power. To Foucault, the body cannot exist before the
law (that which holds and ascribes its meaning). Similarly, sexuality cannot free itself from relations
of power (Butler 1989:603). Indeed, the body is culturally contested; it is incapable of independence
from any particular structuralized narrative. The ubiquitous yet uncertain subject of sex, as Foucault
describes, is an imaginary point, the consequence of materiality fully invested with ideas (Butler
1989:603). He writes; Nothing in man not even his body is sufficiently stable to serve as the basis for
self recognition or for understanding other men (Foucault 1980:153). The culturally constructed body
then, asserts a multitude of identities. The body is molded by distinct regimes of life, broken down by
rhythms of work, rest, and holiday uprooted by cultural significant values, habits and moral laws
(Foucault 1980:153). The legality of the body within the context of transactional sex has been a
subject of constant debate, primarily limited to a severe binary whereby the focus on decriminalization
rest upon the idea of human agency and the victimization of the body. Central to these narratives is, of
course, the female form. On one end of the spectrum, anti prostitution activists argue that women
involved in the sex trade industry are but victims of an unjust

Sharing information is the solution to improving beneficial outcomes for all children. It is essential to

involved with children must know and understand what to do and the most effective ways of sharing
information about children who are at risk of abuse or neglect. In some situations, sharing information
with a family about their child could seem good practice, but it is not crucial e.g. where evidence of
abuse or neglect could be destroyed or removed by a parent/carer or where a child could be placed at
an increased risk when parents/carers have this knowledge.

It is important to work in partnership with other organisations to safeguard children/young people in

Trade Barriers From An Academic Standpoint

Dr. Walter Vanpoolen
April 23, 2015 Trade Barriers From an academic standpoint, economists overall believe that free trade
would benefit the economy more than instituting tariffs and non tariff trade barriers. However, the
reality is quite different. Politically, tariffs help to strike a balance between social welfare and the
politicians goals. One theory is that campaign contributions are needed for re election; and to achieve
these funds, politicians will weigh this need against welfare reducing protection for industry lobbyists
(Magee, 2011). The models would suggest that the tariffs should actually be much higher than they are
due to the low efficiency cost of tariffs compared to the substantial gains provided for the producers
(Magee, 2011). However, developed countries actually have very low tariffs. There are six possible
explanations for why developed countries have such low tariffs when the political theories behind why
we have tariffs at all would suggest they should be higher.
Six Reasons for Low Tariffs There are six main reasons for the disparity realized between theory and
reality. These explanations would suggest that politicians are just not responsive to the lobbying
efforts, the welfare costs of the implemented tariffs are higher than anticipated, the General Agreement
on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) successfully restrained trade barriers, free rider

A leader should be able to inspire those around them. If someone is inspired and motivated to do
something they will do it without being forced to. I am able to inspire others by showing them how
good they are and what they can become. If someone has a goal to work towards they are more likely
to improve. I will help inspire the players in my section so we can become the best we can be.
Communication is also a key skill to being a leader. If the leader and the people around them aren t
able to communicate then nothing will get done. I have learned in the past that not communicating can
lead to the downfall to a piece or group. If a member of the section isn t aware that they are playing
something wrong it will never be fixed. As a leader I will be able to help others improve and
communicate with them what they can do in the future to prevent the same mistake from happening.
I am able to learn music fast and will use that advantage to help others with their parts. To be able to
help them, I will make sure I understand how all of the parts fit together and tell them how they can
improve on the sections they are struggling with. Inspiration is very important in a section and I will
be able to provide that. I am very committed to percussion and the band in general. I want to be able to

The Goals And Processes Of Inductive And Deductive Processes
Contrast the goals and processes of inductive and deductive processes when it comes to the study of
scripture.
The inductive and deductive processes are the methods that we apply to use our understanding and
practice in studying scriptures in the bible. The goal of the inductive processes is to understand the
particulars which is based on a set of conclusive ideas. In studying bible scriptures the goal is to
engage and immerse ourselves in the words of what the bible scriptures is conveying to us. The
induction process to studying scriptures Is essentially a comprehensive, holistic study of the bible that
takes into account every aspect of the existence of the biblical text and that intentional in allowing the
Bible in its final canonical shape to speak to us on its own terms, thus leading to accurate, original,
compelling, and profound interpretation and contemporary appropriation (Bauer and Traina 2006, 7).
Acquiring the spiritual truth requires us to be motivated and disciplined in a manner that engages our
spiritual connection to God in that As Christian believers, we are convinced that the development of a
methodical, inductive approach is the means of training the mind to become a more fit instrument for
the operation of God s spirit. Because biblical interpretation is to be valid...But the mind s proper
function is not automatic; therefore the mind needs to be trained, or it might become the means
negating God s spirit (Bauer and Traina 2006, 10). In contrast,

Split Sisters and Split Personalities of Goblin Market Essay
Split Sisters and Split Personalities of Goblin Market
I have 50 different personalities, and still I m lonely (Amos). Perhaps everyone is truly composed of
multiple personalities embodied within one whole. Whether these split personalities are actual or
purely metaphorical, no one human being has a single sided mind, and a single sided position on
everything. Within the brain many battles are raged between opposing sides of issues, between the
personalities. Goblin Market is one of Christina Rosetti s sister poems, a form in which she used

personalities are developed. In response to the goblin men Lizzie veiled her blushes a modest gesture,
hiding her femininity. Laura, however, bowed her head to hear. The initial impression is of modesty
from the act of bowing her head, yet a curiosity is displayed because she bows her head to hear. Lizzie
then tells Laura that she should not peep at goblin men. This warning seems parroted in response. A

makes a superb Bond, who demonstrates a sense of hard man, wounded by his job and life, which

Reasons And Differences Of Spain And The Ming Empire
During the 15th and 16th century, exploration became the new norm of society. Each individual
country had their own motives, reasons and goals regarding voyages across land and sea. For instance,
Christopher Columbus, in the name of Spain, voyaged out to find an alternative route to Asia. The
Portuguese, tried to increase their knowledge about trading. Moreover, while some traveled to increase
their powers, Zheng He, of China, traveled to discover raw resources and generate more capital into
China s economy. If we compare the maritime policies of the kingdom of Spain and Portugal on the
one hand and the Ming Empire on the other the differences in motives clearly outweigh the
similarities between these two societies. For example, the Kingdoms of Spain and Portugal traveled to
spread Christianity, to gain land, to rule over new subjects and to spread their power throughout the
different continents, while as the Ming Dynasty was only interested in capital and new/raw resources.
Asia was the center of trade, business and craft. Many countries tried to find a direct route to Asia, in
order to increase trade. Whereas, China decided to uphold isolationism. Its population was one
hundred million people in four million miles of square land. China did not want more land, nor more
subjects to govern. In fact, China had more people than it can govern. Yongle Emperor sent Zheng He

This company has been providing a great example for all companies to follow in order to be

put his ideas into motion by creating a blend of fabrics that worked best for the comfort of athletes as
this was his main goal. Plank named his company Under Armour and based it upon one shirt that he
advertised as a tight fitting, moisture wicking t shirt that supports your muscles and regulates your

Informative Essay On Drone Racing
Drone racing is a well known sport where people fly around their drones and race as fast as they can.
Most drones have FPV systems these days, which is the First Person View. There are cameras in the
racing drones, which help give them the feel of flying as if they were in the cockpit.
Some drone racers use monitors where they have special FPV goggles to give them a virtual
experience of flying drones. This is a sport mixed with video gaming levels to give an immersive
experience.
What you need to know before starting:
To begin, you need all the right components for racing drones. You will need batteries, charger,
controller, FPV goggles, drone, video receiver and a few other items too.
Things to know before your first use of drones: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Speed You obviously require a drone that is quite fast. Usually, most drones have a speed of around
35mph, but you can take them faster to about 50mph without causing any damages to the internal
systems. If you go out of limit and way above 50 mph, you might be straining the battery of your
drone a lot. So be careful when you are racing.
2. Sight FPV camera and sometimes FPV goggles are essential. Your drone will keep tilting as it
speeds up and your camera needs to do the same; otherwise, you will not be able to see where your
drone is going. Make sure your FPV camera has a high frame rate, is durable, and also, has a wide
FOV.
3. Durable When you are racing drones, you don t have a guarantee whether they will crash or not.
Drones are not too cheap in price which is why you need to go for something that is durable in nature.
Other than this, it should be easy to repair too.
Buy a drone that can take hits before it finally breaks down. When you are racing with speed, the
drone can get out of control and hit some objects in the way, so make sure you buy a sturdy and
repairable drone. Your drone should also have the option to replace all the broken parts so that you
don t have to invest in a new one in less

Middle Passage Research Paper
Anderson
Professor Gray
History 1301 155
June 22, 15
The Middle Passage During history there has been plenty of slave trade in different countries. They
have traded different ethnicities, and each had a different means of use for these people. What is
intriguing is how they commuted these people and how this process has impacted their descendants. A
major use of trade in history was the middle passage that was part of the transatlantic slave route. The
transatlantic slave trade concerns history of three continents over four centuries and it has served as a
crucial element of New World protohistory since the slave trade soared in the eighteenth century in
response to the increasing demand for unfree labor in both the Caribbean and the ... Show more

The captives would be happy to take their own lives rather than having no rights as a slave. Lambert s
chilling journal excerpt created a feeling of worry coming from the journalist, almost as if the
shipmates were scared of the slaves and vise versa. Although, ironically enough, once the self
proclaimed Land of the Free (in spite of slavery), the United States has now saved the world from
Nazism and Fascism (in spite of overt, institutionalized racism at home) while also enjoying its status
of noncolonial power as a welcome democratic surplus value (in spite of commercial and diplomatic
colonialism in the subcontinent and elsewhere). (Lambert, 332) Lambert himself revealed the
inequitable treatment of the slaves. White Americans did not even treat them as part of their country.
They are treated more like animals or owned objects of industry in the eyes of past Americans.
Ramesh Mallipeddi told an example of a real historical slave ship. He tells the story of The Hannibal,
a Guineaman financed by the Royal African Company, sailed with a cargo of 700 slaves (480 men and
220 women) from the West African kingdom Whydah to the Caribbean on 27 July 1694. (Mallipedi,
235) This count of people on the ship displays a depiction of the vast amount of people on each of
these voyages. It also gives

Cats have been known to extirpate a bird species within specific regions and may have contributed to
the extinction of isolated island populations.[10] Cats are thought to be primarily responsible for the
extinction of 33 species of birds, and the presence of feral and free ranging cats makes some otherwise
suitable locations unsuitable for attempted species reintroduction.[11]
Since cats were venerated in ancient Egypt, they were commonly believed to have been domesticated
there,[12] but there may have been instances of domestication as early as the Neolithic from around
9,500 years ago (7,500 BC).[13] A genetic study in 2007[14] concluded that all domestic cats are
descended from Near Eastern wildcats, having diverged around 8,000 BC in the Middle East.[12][15]
A 2016 study found that leopard cats were undergoing domestication independently in China around
5,500 BC, though this line of partially domesticated cats leaves no trace in the domesticated
populations of today.[16][17] A 2017 study confirmed that domestic cats are descendants of those first
domesticated by farmers in the Near East around 9,000 years ago.[18][19]

The Constitution of the United States has the amendments in place to protect the citizens from the
violation of his or her rights by the government. The Federal Tort Claim Act of 1946 is enacted to
ensure the citizens of the United States will receive the proper compensation or if the citizens want to

Hedge Funds And Its Strategy Classifications
Introduction
As of 2014, more than 11,000 hedge funds are managing more than $2.6 Trillion in assets (De Pol,
2015). The statement itself speaks how important these hedge funds are in the global financial market.
They provide investors with opportunities to achieve gains and manage risks. Hedge funds provide
liquidity and make financial markets more efficient. These funds can be operated with extreme
flexibility and play an important role in financial innovation and reallocation of financial risk (Rubin
et al, 1999). Although it sounds good, hedge funds took a hit during the 2008 crisis. Along with the
credit crisis came Madoff fraud, the biggest investment scam in 2008. Investors started looking at
these funds as high risk, highly leveraged investment vehicles that lacked transparency. Since mid
2009 hedge funds have picked up and strategies are being improved for better risk management,
transparency and gaining confidence of investors.
The article will give a brief overview of Hedge Funds and its strategy classifications. Then it will
particularly describe Event Driven strategy and the market risks associated with it.
Hedge Funds
A hedge fund can be defined as a pool of investment vehicles that is actively managed and is open
only to a limited group of investors and whose performance is measured in absolute return units
(Connor and Woo, 2003). Hedge funds are private investment partnerships that require investors to
make considerable investments. They are largely

Analysis Of Being A Half Breed By Leslie Marmon
Leslie Marmon Silko s novel, Ceremony, reveals how the crossing of cultures was feared, ridiculed,
and shunned in various Native American tribes. The fear of change is a common and overwhelming
fear everyone faces at some point in their life. The fear of the unknown, the fear of letting go, and the
fear of forgetting all play a part in why people struggle with change. In Ceremony the crossing of
cultures creates half breeds, usually bringing disgrace to their family s name. In Jodi Lundgren s
discourse, Being a Half breed , is about how a girl who struggles with understanding what cultural
group she fits into since she is a half breed. Elizabeth Evasdaughter s essay, Leslie Marmon Silko s

These derogatory terms were used against Tayo and Night Swan as they differed from the Laguna
people. Tayo and Night Swan are rejected by the white and Native populations, and it is determined
they are tainted or dirty compared to those ridiculing others. Night Swan says, they think that if their
children have the same color of skin, the same color of eyes, that nothing is changing, which is why
Auntie excludes Tayo from the family because of Tayo s mother s mistake to interact with white men
(Silko 92). We see a change in this perspective in today s society as we have interracial families,
where race plays little to no part in determining a couple s love for one another. However, we do still
have families which believe their children should marry within the same race due to the fear of change
within their own family.
Night Swan is initially an outcast because she is a half breed but her frivolous behavior pushes her
even further as a disgrace to women. Night Swan discusses the real reason her and Tayo are outcasts,
they are afraid, Tayo. They feel something happening, they can see something happening around them,
and it scares them. Indians or Mexicans or whites most people are afraid of change. (Silko 92). Night
Swan teaches Tayo about miscegenation and how the people do not physically fear them, but rather
fear the concept of change occurring around them. Night Swan

Attempting to Pin Down a Definition of Childhood Essay
The term Childhood has always be hard to define as it will vary from each person, every person would
have experienced a childhood but how they define theirs is a different story. Childhood is the time for
children to be in school and at play, to grow strong and confident with the love and encouragement of
their family and an extended community of caring adults. (UNICEF, 2005). From a psychological
view childhood would be defined as the space between birth and attainment of adulthood; but it is far
more than that, it a special time where the child children are safe from violence, free from fear,
protected from exploitation and abuse and free to explore the treasures of life. In the UK there is no

When asked, many celebrities (sports figures, actors, musicians) state that they don t want to be role
models. (Cohen, E 2005;384)Aristotle would potentially argue that is was not a choice a person can
make. As celebrities they are so prominent in society they have no choice but to be a role model and
take the responsibilities seriously.
Banduras work on social learning shown that much of learning that occurs during development is
acquired through observation and imitation. Behaviour is learned from the environment through the
process of observational learning (1977), Children observe the people around them behaving in
various ways. (1961). When this topic is brought to light many of us would agree that children learn
best from role models and choose to imitate the behaviour they desire. In today society there are
enough negative role models for children to choose from. Both adolescents and children copy the
appearances and actions of those in movies, music videos, videos and television. However, today s
society especially the media are not modelling pro social behaviour or promoting family values. Many
parents fear to think of their child imitating actions from a negative role model .
Whether the daughter or son acknowledges it or not, parents are one of the child s biggest role models
and hold the more influence over decision making and what happens in their life. From when the child
is born to when they leave home, some of their parents

  • 2. Peter Singer s The Singer Solution To World Poverty The Declaration of Independence guarantees everyone the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In many ways, those inalienable rights are tied into many aspects of the stereotypical American lifestyle. There is the idea of the American Dream, consisting of a nuclear family living in a nice house with a white picket fence, a well cared for lawn, and a car in the driveway. As we all know this is a very atypical scenario for most of the planet. According to DoSomething.org, more than three billion people live on less than $2.50 a day, with 1.3 billion of those people living in extreme poverty, characterized by extreme poverty (less than $1.25 a day) ( 11 Facts About Global Poverty | Dosomething.Org | Volunteer For Social Change ). With such a large economical gap shouldn t people feel more compelled to act up and donate money to a cause? This is the question that author Peter Singer explores in his essay The Singer Solution to World Poverty, with entails people being radically philanthropic, giving away all money that isn t used on necessities. While this method seems like the most charitable course to take, humans enjoy luxuries and do not care for everyone equally. There are many moral dilemmas in which there is a deviation from what is right in the utilitarian point of view and the morals that current society holds. While it is important to look at Singer s specific argument, it is also important to take a step back and look at where he is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The fruit peel of Lansium domesticum, var. pubescens ( thicker than that one of the sweeter var. domesticum ) exudes a white sap/latex containing the mosquito repelling triterpenes. The dried peel is burned and produces an aromatic, white smoke ( white from the sap and some remaining water ). Did you do a science project yourself, and do you have to write an abstract, or do you just have to describe what it is? I could not quite understand this.... but I can give you a general description of what it is. An abstract is basically a summary of a research project. It will usually describe four different things: 1. the objective (background) of the study, 2. the methods used, 3. the results found, and 4. the conclusions. It is usually very short (one paragraph), so it needs to describe all these things in a very compact, yet clear way. Abstracts are usually a part of a scientific publication, usually printed at the beginning. When researchers search in databases for relevant publications, they will search for keywords, and then a number of publications will pop up (similar to a Google search). In their result screen, they will see the abstract and read them to decide if they want to read the whole paper or not. So the abstract needs to be attractive and clear. The journal that you want to publish your research in, will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Evolution Of Sexual And Sexual Selection This article focuses on the evolution of sexual differences in insects. Intense sexual selection due to competition for mates is the main driving force behind the evolution of such variations. Males produce smaller and more numerous gametes than females and often competition between males is greater than that between females. It is suggested by the authors that the material contribution by each of sexes to the next generation is what determines the reproductive rate of the population. In an instances where one sex contributes more to the reproduction and survival of the offspring than the other this sex will become the limiting factor for sexual selection, and will be subject to greater loss of fitness if an importer mate choice is made. In terms of contribution to offspring both male and female can provide care in various ways. The relative investment of each sex will determine the degree to which the one sex competes for the opposite one. The observed sexual differences proved a clue about the intensity of sexual selection in particular species. Usually females contribute more to the offspring care and are the limiting factor for sexual selection, as a result males exhibit more variations in secondary sexual characteristics in terms of morphology and behavior. In species that male provide more care the roles are reversed. Though direct care is not common in insects the males might contribute indirectly by protecting the female after mating as observed in several ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Colossians 2 Persuasive Essay Tyshionna Benson Writing 101 Mrs. Buckley 8 November 2017 Therefore, as God s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:12 14 New International Version (NIV) Everyone Deserves to be Happy: Upholding all constitutional values for all American citizens despite Religious persecutions Excuse me, this is a Christian business, and some customers have been complaining to my staff saying that y all are making them uncomfortable, so I would like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While others may say that those who are deeply rooted in their religion have the right to express their beliefs just as members of the LGBTQ community have the right to express their sexuality, it is unconstitutional and frankly frowned upon in most religions to treat others with anything less than the respect that they deserve solely because their choices may not align with a certain religion s beliefs. As Christians, as with any other religion, you have the freedom to express yourself without persecution but, as we all know, one of the greatest and most important commandments in Christianity, as stated in Mark 12:31, is Love your neighbor as you love yourself (The Holy Bible). Though the bill of rights states that any person born in America has the freedom of religion and the freedom to practice whatever actions that belief may entitle, our constitution also states that we have the freedom of expression. By passing bills such as HB1523, we are further proving that discrimination is a prevalent problem in America s society. America is known to be the land of the free. While some may say that this only means that American citizens are not kept in bondage and are allowed to make their own decisions, it also means that we were born with the freedom to be who we are. How can anyone live the American dream if they are constantly being frowned upon and judged by others? The golden rule, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Timbuktu Research Paper In the Ancient World, cities played vital roles in advancing and improving society. They were the organized centers of trade, centers of education and scholarship, and the collaboration of many people resulted in furthering society in every aspect of life. One of the greatest of these ancient cities was Timbuktu, a major city in West Africa that were serve as the capital of the ancient civilizations to come, Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. In the following piece of evidence, D, the graphic, from a Catalan Atlas in 1375, clearly depicted West Africa as an extremely wealthy Old World power, with Mansa Musa sitting on his throne of gold. After going over these pieces of evidence, Timbuktu was a trading capital of the Old World, a center of scholarship and education, and what appeared to be the wealthiest city in the world at its time. But like all like all great cities, who fall because they lose what originally makes them great, Timbuktu fell as well. Ultimately, Timbuktu fell because as the Americas were more drawn into trade and trade relied much more on sea, Timbuktu received less traffic and eventually became bypassed. Also, because Timbuktu was so powerful, the West African trade civilizations expanded so much that it became hard to enforce power over all of their land, which ultimately led to collapse. To summarize, Timbuktu and the civilizations that ruled it ultimately fell because the trading world came to bypass them, and they grew so much that it became hard to maintain ... • 7. United Airlines Adoption Paper United Airlines customers got an unwelcome surprise this morning: Domestic departures were delayed more than a half hour because of what appears to be incorrect dispatching information in the airline s computer systems. About 150 United Airlines flights were grounded. United Airlines aircraft were held on the ground across the United States for nearly 40 minutes early Tuesday for unexplained technical issues, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA gave the reason for the rare complete ground stop, which affected hundreds of flights, as automation issues. The stop began at 1254 GMT and was lifted at 1333 GMT. United has struggled with occasional computer faults since the 2010 merger between former parent UAL Corp. and Continental Airlines creating the current United Continental Holdings Inc. In February 2014, the system that handles check ins and other passenger services failed, disrupting travel for about three hours at United hub airports including San Francisco, Washington, and Chicago. The previous month, a malfunction stranded pilots and caused about 1,500 cancellations. United added extra precautions in 2012 after a computer breakdown caused one of its planes to take off about 20,000 pounds (9,100 kilograms) heavier than pilots believed, creating difficulties in getting the jetliner airborne similar to the recent incident involving the Air France ... The media can of course have good resources: education and entertainment, but at the same time can be very toxic to kids. It can result in destructive mind sets and berserk attitudes in both boys and girls. With the media, children are bombarded by sexual images, drugs and drinking day in and day out. Popular children TV channels like Nickelodeon and the Disney channel have shows where kids are kissing and showing small suggestions of sex. Kids are like sponges: they soak up everything they see, hear and learn. Those in the media need to understand that whatever they do is being viewed by kids all over the world and they are thinking it s okay to behave in an inappropriate manner. The media is definitely one of the most dominant encouragements to the fast maturity seen in the children of today. It is no surprise that with the whole new world of technology young children nowadays are becoming more and more obsessive in this realm, both at school and at home. Due to the massive influence of technology, children are learning more, forcing them to grow up quickly and take on a lot more than past generations did. Research taken by Internet security company AVG shows that more small children can play a computer game than ride a bike. 58% of children aged 2 5 know how to play a basic computer game. For the UK and France that jumps to 70%. Even 44% of 2 3 year olds have the ability to play a computer game. By comparison, 43% of kids 2 3 can ride a bike . These ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Use of Persuasive Argument in 12 Angry Men Essay The movie 12 Angry Men examines the dynamics at play in a United States jury room in the 1950 s. It revolves around the opinions and mindsets of twelve diverse characters that are tasked with pronouncing the guilt or innocence of a young man accused of patricide. The extraordinary element is that their finding will determine his life or death. This play was made into a movie in 1957, produced by Henry Fonda who played the lead role, Juror #8, and Reginald Rose who wrote the original screenplay. This essay will explore some of the critical thinking elements found within the context of this movie, and will show that rational reason and logic when used effectively can overcome the mostly ineffective rush to judgment that can be prevalent in ... Juror #8 analyses each of these points and makes credible arguments that the conclusion is flawed based on incorrect reasoning, by pointing out inconsistencies in the conclusions reached. The other jurors are content to believe that their reasoning is solid, as they have used examples of deductive reasoning to reach their conclusion. Juror #3 gives his reasons for reaching the conclusion that It s quite clear that the boy never went to the movies that night, returned home and killed his father with the knife as identified in Court (Fonda Lumet, 1957). Until Juror #8 takes out a similar knife and poses the question that it was possible that another knife was used, Juror #7 calls it a million to one however Juror #8 persists in saying it was possible. • 10. Women Leaving Her Husband Analysis Butler explains to her readers the ample reasons why wives of the medieval time period would decide to leave their husbands. In fact, on page 338 of her article, Butler writes, The goal of this paper is to provide a more comprehensive perspective of husband desertion, including the risks involved in deserting one s husband, the wife s motivations, and the logistics of desertion (Butler 338). She begins her article with some background information in hopes to enlighten her readers that at this point in history, men had all the power in any marriage. Following the brief history of the misogyny found in medieval marriages, Butler uses the rest of her article to explain to her readers the trials and tribulations these wives had to go through, the risk of others knowing she wanted to leave, and what made the wives want to leave at all. Butler first chooses to explain what the risks were when a wife left her husband during the medieval era. Due to the misogyny found in medieval marriages, if a woman decided to leave her husband, she had to be well aware of the consequences that would follow. For instance, Butler points out to her audience that if a woman decided to leave her husband, then must live with the label of adulteress. Confucius spent many years trying to promoting his ideas to rulers in different states but was not able to get through4. To understand why such a visionary philosopher could not get others to agree with him, we will have to look at the nature of the Confucian theory and why was it incapable of persuading the lords of countries. Firstly, Confucianism prized the rule of men over the rule of law; that is to promote harmony in the people over the interest of a ruler. If a ruler has appropriate personal conduct the government will be effective without needing to issue order. However, the ruler do not have the correct conducts, his orders will not be obeyed. Secondly, Confucius viewed rules and laws as harmful. He argued that people led by laws and punishments will try to avoid punishment but lose the sense of shame. If they are led by virtue and guided by propriety, they will preserve their sense of shame and become good citizens5. He saw a country as an extended family and a ruler should take care of his citizens like a father would take care of his children. The History Of Sexuality, By Michel Foucault In the History of Sexuality Vol. 1, Michel Foucault writes the body as a constructed and manipulated agent, the locus of sociopolitical discourse and power. To Foucault, the body cannot exist before the law (that which holds and ascribes its meaning). Similarly, sexuality cannot free itself from relations of power (Butler 1989:603). Indeed, the body is culturally contested; it is incapable of independence from any particular structuralized narrative. The ubiquitous yet uncertain subject of sex, as Foucault describes, is an imaginary point, the consequence of materiality fully invested with ideas (Butler 1989:603). He writes; Nothing in man not even his body is sufficiently stable to serve as the basis for self recognition or for understanding other men (Foucault 1980:153). The culturally constructed body then, asserts a multitude of identities. The body is molded by distinct regimes of life, broken down by rhythms of work, rest, and holiday uprooted by cultural significant values, habits and moral laws (Foucault 1980:153). The legality of the body within the context of transactional sex has been a subject of constant debate, primarily limited to a severe binary whereby the focus on decriminalization rest upon the idea of human agency and the victimization of the body. Central to these narratives is, of course, the female form. Trade Barriers From An Academic Standpoint Trade Barriers Allisa Bell ECN500 Global Economics Colorado State University Global Campus Dr. Walter Vanpoolen April 23, 2015 Trade Barriers From an academic standpoint, economists overall believe that free trade would benefit the economy more than instituting tariffs and non tariff trade barriers. However, the reality is quite different. Politically, tariffs help to strike a balance between social welfare and the politicians goals. One theory is that campaign contributions are needed for re election; and to achieve these funds, politicians will weigh this need against welfare reducing protection for industry lobbyists (Magee, 2011). The models would suggest that the tariffs should actually be much higher than they are due to the low efficiency cost of tariffs compared to the substantial gains provided for the producers (Magee, 2011). However, developed countries actually have very low tariffs. There are six possible explanations for why developed countries have such low tariffs when the political theories behind why we have tariffs at all would suggest they should be higher. Six Reasons for Low Tariffs There are six main reasons for the disparity realized between theory and reality. For instance, Christopher Columbus, in the name of Spain, voyaged out to find an alternative route to Asia. The Portuguese, tried to increase their knowledge about trading. Moreover, while some traveled to increase their powers, Zheng He, of China, traveled to discover raw resources and generate more capital into China s economy. If we compare the maritime policies of the kingdom of Spain and Portugal on the one hand and the Ming Empire on the other the differences in motives clearly outweigh the similarities between these two societies. For example, the Kingdoms of Spain and Portugal traveled to spread Christianity, to gain land, to rule over new subjects and to spread their power throughout the different continents, while as the Ming Dynasty was only interested in capital and new/raw resources. Asia was the center of trade, business and craft. Many countries tried to find a direct route to Asia, in order to increase trade. Whereas, China decided to uphold isolationism. Its population was one hundred million people in four million miles of square land. China did not want more land, nor more subjects to govern. In fact, China had more people than it can govern. Under Armour is a widely known and financially successful corporation in today s athletic apparel and performance industry; however nineteen years ago it all began with one man s vivid idea. Kevin Plank, a young aspiring athlete and special team s captain for the University of Maryland football team, was the first in 1996 to formulize an idea with purpose to provide athletes with a shirt to fit their workout and game needs. As any athlete knows cotton is not the best choice for vigorous activity since this fabric does not dry quickly. This notion is what catapulted Plank s idea. He put his ideas into motion by creating a blend of fabrics that worked best for the comfort of athletes as this was his main goal. Plank named his company Under Armour and based it upon one shirt that he advertised as a tight fitting, moisture wicking t shirt that supports your muscles and regulates your body temperature (Under Armour, Inc.).
