Savior Siblings Be Banned
This essay will discuss the concerns mentioned in Sheldon s article Should Selecting Savior Siblings
Be Banned? Through the use of PGD, Sheldon s arguments of designer babies and slippery slopes and
mean, ends, and commodification, critically evaluated in the favor of banning savior siblings . A
preimplantation genetic diagnosis, known as PGD, is a screening test that physicians use to determine
the presence of genetic and/or chromosomal disorders in intro fertilization embryos. The first
argument against permitting the deliberate creation of saviour siblings, is that to do so would be to
step onto a slippery slope towards allowing designer babies. (Sheldon, 534) Sheldon presents three
distinctly objections, allowing the creation

Conservation banking was modeled after the U.S. wetland...
Conservation banking was modeled after the U.S. wetland mitigation banking system and the two
programs share many similarities. However, unlike the wetland mitigation system, conservation
offsets do not have a stated no net loss goal, but instead have a species recovery goal. Both
conservation and wetlands mitigation banks are privately or publicly owned lands which are protected
and managed for its ecological value. By doing this, the bank sponsor generates habitat or wetland or
stream credits to sell to developers or transportation departments who need to offset their impacts and
comply with the legal requirements for the permitting of development or roadway projects. Both types
of banks offer benefits to both the landowner that owns ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Plus studies have shown that on site mitigation often failed to produce compensatory wetland resource
values (Ruhl et al., 2005). Wetland mitigation seeks to replace functions that are damaged or lost at the
impact site by creating, restoring, or enhancing wetlands nearby, generally in the same watershed or
eco region. When wetland mitigation banks are not available, the alternative is on site or off site
mitigation performed by the permit applicant. These project specific mitigation sites led to small,
isolated wetlands being restored that provided minimal ecological uplift to the watershed. Wetland
mitigation banking can be used to combine the smaller wetland restorations sites into larger restored
habitats that can better replace the lost functions from the impacts. Regulatory agencies express a
preference for wetland credits generated from restoration, creation, or enhancement instead of
preservation. This is in line with the no net loss policy, which seeks to maintain the wetland acreage or
even increase the acreage in the United States.
Conservation banking took the idea of wetland banking and transformed it into threatened and
endangered species conservation with a few alterations. The primary objective of wetland mitigation is
to meet the no net loss goal by replacing the acreage and function of the wetland areas that will be
impacted by a proposed project. The goal of

A Report On The Outbreak Of Salmonella
Salmonella is a gram negative bacterium present in contaminated food or water. Typhoid fever is a
systemic infection caused by the serotype Salmonella typhi and can be fatal without proper
intervention. Instances of resistant typhoid are high in less developed countries. Resistance occurs
when genetic mutations prevent antibiotic mechanisms of action, making current antibiotics less
effective. The purpose of this drug screen was to target oncological drugs and diversity library
compounds to identify novel antibiotic substances. To perform the initial drug screen, we exposed
Salmonella typhimurium to various compounds and chemotherapeutic drugs. The positive and
negative controls were ampicillin and Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), respectively. We used
spectrophotometry to measure the growth of salmonella in the plate. Hits were identified as
compounds with an absorbance below 2 standard deviations of the mean DMSO value, meaning that
hits would have an absorbance below 0.065. We identified that the FDA approved drug capecitabine
had an average absorbance of 0.035. To perform a dosing series, capecitabine was diluted in a 1:2
ratio, making 13 dilutions total. The dosing series revealed that capecitabine is most effective at doses
lower than 6.25 μM. Through this process, we determined that the oncological drug Capecitabine
(Xeloda) has dose dependent antibiotic properties. Capecitabine is a prodrug to U5 fluorouracil, used

The Five Steps In The Appeals Process
Most legal argument between state laws is mostly decided in the trial courts or by an administrative
agency. But after a decision has been made, an individual that believe that a legal error had occurred
that hindered his/her case that person may turn to the state s appeal court. The appeals process
involves five steps that often occur right after the other and depending on the prior step needed to be
completed. The first step in the court of appeals require that the individual appealing ruling to file a
notice of appeal in a certain frame of time. This time frame rely on the type of case entail and weather
if it s a state issue, depend on which state that the trial took place. The second step required the
appellant to file information. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The third step required both the opposite side and the appellant side to file a briefing with the
appellate court. The briefing provides case lists summarizing the case where precedence has been
created. The fourth step is when both side present an oral arguments. These arguments are generally
short, usually half an hour . The last step involve is when the appellate court gives a decision
explaining how the decision was made. The appeals system is the most important step because it
allows for Checks and Balances inside the judicial system. They will be no guarantee of true justice
given to the people if the appeals process was not available. The court of appeals is very important
because every decision given is added to resolute legal precedence on the issue at hand. This
precedent becomes crucial for all lower courts, this precedent

Importance Of Social Entrepreneurship Essay
IS SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP THE BEST WAY TO HELP PEOPLE IN NEED?
Entrepreneurship is the process of designing, launching and running a new business while social
entrepreneurs launch the business and implement solutions to social, cultural, or environmental issues
simultaneously. Bill Drayton once said, There is nothing more powerful than a new idea in the hands
of a social entrepreneur. In the world, there are billions of people have no access to education,
healthcare, clean drinking water, food and even the basic human rights and respect. Violence, poverty
and more global issues are at the alarm rate nowadays. These matters have to be tackled immediately
before it is too late to do so. In our opinion, social entrepreneurship is the best way to help the needy
and overcome the problem. New ideas, opportunities and technologies are sought in solving long
standing social problems. There is a good example to indicate our words, social entrepreneur in South
America, Steve Katsaros. Can you imagine what was life like when oil lamps and candles were all we
had to light our cities with? Indoors was just as treacherous as outdoors. Katsaros invented a solar
powered light bulb that provide isolated villages with power, thus bypassing the need to bring a power
infrastructure out to remote areas. It has brought a great change in their daily lives which allow people
to work, study and play at night without the use of kerosene lamps, which may pollute the
environment and arise the respiratory diseases such as asthma. Consequently, Katsaros was able to
bring convenience to the people while he can also stay in his business by selling the bulbs to the
people. (The Guardian, 2009)
To cite the saying that social entrepreneurship is the best way to help people in need, we would like to
provide an outstanding example of social enterprise which is Grameen Bank. Grameen Bank was
officially founded in 1983 by Muhammad Yunus and it provides small loans, rather than charity, to the
poorest of the poor especially women in Bangladesh. This indeed provides an opportunity for the
people to transform their lives. In 2006, Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Muhammad Yunus and the
Grameen Bank for their efforts to create economic and social

Copper 2 Chloride Dihydrate Research Paper
Copper II Chloride Dihydrate [CuCl2.2H2O] is a solid which is soluble in water and alcohol. It
appears in a fine light blue green deliquescent crystal with slight hydrochloric odour (Material Safety
Data Sheet, 2010). Copper II Chloride Dihydrate is used in different fields both for agricultural and
non agricultural purposes. Agricultural uses include herbicides, toxicity tests, food production,
pesticides, fungicides, feed additive, wood preservative and disinfectant (Material Safety Data Sheet,
2010). Non agricultural uses are: as a catalyst for organic plating and inorganic reactions, in tinting
baths for Iron (Fe) and Tin (Sn), in photography as a fixer, desensitizer and reagent, as mordant for
dyeing and printing textiles, in indelible, invisible and laundry marking inks, in metallurgy: in wet
process for recovering mercury from ores and in refining copper, silver and gold, in pigments for glass
and ceramics, in pharmaceuticals and textile industries, ornaments and dental amalgams (Material

What Are Fred Moore s Greatest Accomplishments
Fred Moore grew up drawing. He used to submit artwork to the Los angles Junior Times, and many of
his pieces made it into the magazine. Eventually, he made it over to the Disney Studio where he found
himself a job in the animation department. Fred Moore is quite well known for redesigning Walt
Disney s beloved Mickey Mouse character. Previously, the character had used a squash and stretch
technique and was all circles and long cylindrical shapes for the arms and legs. Moore gave Mickey
Mouse a much needed tune up and his design of Mickey Mouse is still used today. Aside from
redesigning Mickey Mouse, Moore also worked on over 35 animated shorts, one of which was
nominated for an academy award. In my opinion, one of Moore s greatest accomplishments was when
Disney appointed him as Directing Animator for dwarves in the very first full length animated feature
film to come out of the Disney Studio, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Bashful, Doc, Dopey,
Happy, Sleepy, Sneezy and Grumpy are the names of the dwarves that Moore gave so much
personality to. Their names correlate to their personalities, and Moore was able to capture the

Bill 60, a.k.a. The Quebec Charter of Values
Pauline Marois graduated with a bachelor s degree in social services from the University of Laval in
1971 (Parti Québécois, n.d.). She then went on to proceeded, in 1976, to obtain a master s degree in
business administration from the University of Montreal (Parti Québécois, n.d.). She is the leader of
the Parti Quebecois since 2007, and is also the Prime minister of Québec since 2012 (Parti Québécois,
n.d.). Pauline Marois and the Parti Québécois proposed Bill 60, also known as the Charter of Values,
in fall of 2013 (Riga, 2014, para. 7). Therefore the purpose of this paper will be to analyse the goal of
this bill, the ways it may be achieved, and the central criticisms of it.
First of all, Bill 60 is officially defined as being a charter affirming the values of State secularism and
religious neutrality and equality between women and men, and providing a framework for
accommodation requests (National Assembly, Bill 60, 2014). This definition can be interpreted in
simpler terms. To begin, people who work in governmental positions, for example, must be impartial
when it comes to religious elements and show how non religious or spiritual the State is (National
Assembly, Bill 60, 2014). Furthermore, when it comes to accommodation requests made on religious
grounds, some elements have to be respected. There are many examples when it comes to having a
scheme for these accommodations such as: both men and women must be treated equally, and also the
accommodation should be

The Pros And Cons Of Gelukpa Law
It is absolutely true that Doegyal practitioners are not allowed to receive Nyingma teaching. It is
clearly written in the infamous Yellow Book, how the spirit Doegyal spoke to Zigyab Rinpoche, that
on many occasions like this gyaltsen dorjee shugden spoke during trance that you can not listen or
practice Nyigma teachings. If you do this kind of things, then there would be great obstacles to your
life as well as your accomplishment, which would not be good. He warned many times but did not
listen. One day, Dorjee Shugden was greatly annoyed and told him I may not pierce you with my
deadly claws, if I do, I cannot take them out. In this way, the deity persuaded the Rinpoche to uphold a
pure Gelug tradition.
Now, they say they are authentic Gelukpa Buddhists. Then, why not respect basic Buddhist principles
in general and the general Gelugpa law in particular? Which is more important, the general Gelukpa
Law or Shugden? According to the current ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If we look at the issue objectively, Shugden has been a subject of a huge controversy since the
beginning of his story. Some believe that he is the emanation of Lord Manjushri while the majority of
Tibetan Buddhists from all the four traditions look upon him as a ghost. In fact, it has created
confusion in the lives of many Tibetan Buddhistsfor generations His Holiness has been very cautious
at the beginning. He has done a thorough investigation on the subject through observation, reflection,
analysis and dreams, which have taken years for him to come to realise the real identity of the spirit.
After all these years of hard work, he finally realised that there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that
the so called dharma protector is none other than an ordinary spirit. He used divination in the presence
of Tibet s Patron deity Palden Lhamo to reconfirm the revelation. The divination was an icing on the
cake rather than the cake

Madonna And Virgin And Child Essay
The Medieval Ages marked thirteenth century Europe, but steady progression towards the fourteenth
century showed a contrasting image of the world. The Renaissance movement slowly overshadowed
the Gothic and Italo Byzantine characteristics that dominated Medieval Europe in favor of the
resurgence of classical antiquity. Late fourteenth to early fifteenth century artwork exemplified the
development of Greco Roman naturalism the increased piety of Italians evident on the heavy demand
for devotional images, and the expanding consciousness of philosophical and scholastic abstractions
relating to the natural world. Likewise, the Master of Straus Madonna s Madonna and Child of the

The frames of both paintings are gold and ornate, but more importantly, both have the same phrases
engraved below the painting. Ave Maria Gratia Plena are the words of Catholic devotional prayer
typically spoken with rosary beads, and directed towards the Virgin Mary. Personal devotions became
an increasingly common practice during the late 1340 s, following the proliferation of the Black Death
especially within populated Italian cities (Gardner, p.406). Responding to the growing fervor for the
Bible, artists receive many commissions to conceive biblical legends into reality. The Madonna and
Christ child in both Strauss Madonna and Virgin and Child convey an allegorical and symbolistic
representation of Resurrection: the parallel of the sacrifice of the Christ s body to the suffering of
humans. Jesus Christ s suffering through crucifiction and physical worldly suffering. Despite the
celestial backgrounds and striking halos, Master of Straus Madonna and Romano illustrates these
venerated idols as humans. Tale dictates that a goldfinch received a red spot from the blood of Jesus
after pulling a thorn from his head as he approached closer to the time of his crucifixion. The
goldfinch held by infant Christ serves as a reminder that God lived as a man and died as a man, and a
consolation to the audience that suffering and death will lead to human

the local level, which would cover disasters like a nuclear meltdown; state level, which would cover
more widespread menaces like hurricanes; and the national level, which might involve a mass

2.2. Según el tipo de

Freedom, Freedom From Want, And Freedom Of Freedom
For generations, we as a society have evaluated what we call our freedoms, as they constantly
continue to influence our quality of life. In the 1940s, President Franklin Roosevelt s Message to
Congress promised the people of America Four Freedoms, or freedoms that are imperative to human
life. These freedoms included freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and
freedom from fear. Freedom of speech goes back to the first amendment where there is the liberty of
expression. Freedom of worship allows people to practice any belief system they desire, as well as
worship the God that they please. Freedom from want meant no citizen should have to yearn for the
basic needs to survive, and should be provided with a standard living. Finally, freedom from fear
meant for there to be no fear of having to use aggression against a neighbor, in addition to being
granted peace and a sense of security. These were the guaranteed freedoms stated by the president for
the future. However, as time progressed and certain events in history began occurring, these freedoms
may have slipped from view and become less practiced. It is clear to see that the United States
government did not effectively uphold these freedoms during, the time the U.S declared war against
the Japanese, during the scare of Communism, and in the day to day life for citizens in minority
groups. One of the instances in which we can notice this unsuccessful protection of freedoms is
around 1941, when President

The Death Of Drunk Driving
Drinking and Driving has been around just as long as drugs have, yet drunk driving takes more lives
than drugs do per year. Last year in 2014, 9967 people were killed in car crashes. There was 3464
cocaine related deaths during the same period. Stricter drinking and driving laws were only put into
law after the Carollton bus disaster happened. In 1988 a drunk driver driving the wrong way in
Kentucky hit a school bus where 27 people died and dozens more were injured. In the aftermath,
Mothers Against Drunk Driving was started and throughout the 80 s drunk driving became a hot topic.
At that time alcohol related accidents totaled around 100,000 a year. Deaths related to illegal drug
overdose, AIDS, or violence associated with the illegal drug trade totaled up to 21, 000 per year.
Sentencing for drunk drivers typically only spend two days in jail the first time and up to ten days the
second. Drunk driving carries a far greater risk of violent death than the use or sale of illegal drugs,
but the social response to drunk driver s generally emphasized keeping the person functional and in
society, while attempting to respond to the dangerous behavior through treatment and counseling.
People charged with drug offenses, are typically charged with felonies and sentenced to prison. At that
time there were not first and second chances with a few days in jail like it was for drinking and
driving. One of the main reasons for this disparity is that white men account for the majority of

Competitive Structure Of The Airline Industry
We determine an industry s level of rivalry based on four qualities that contribute to the level of
rivalry: industry competitive structure, industry demand, cost condition, and exit barrier. Aggregating
each quality determines the overall impact on the industry, intensity of competition, and ultimately, the
profit potential.
The competitive structure of an industry can be described as either fragmented or consolidated. A
consolidated industry consists of few, but large companies. They not only control the market like that
of an oligarchy, but have the capacity to determine industry prices. This is a contrast from a
fragmented industry. Fragmented industries consist of numerous small or medium sized companies
that do not have the power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Industry demand within a market reflects the level of demand by consumers. Industries that
experience high demand are more attractive and profitable. The basis of this reasoning is that higher
consumer demand can be shared amongst industry participants. Companies in this market would not
have to fight one another over customers. Inversely, industries with declining demand, forces
companies to fight each other for the small, residual demand left within the market. Now, a company
can grow only by taking market share away from other companies (Hill Jones, 2012, pg. 62).
Industries that exhibit such a characteristic are deemed unattractive and lead to lower profit margins.
The airline industry has exhibited high grow throughout 2016. In 2016, passenger demand grew by
6.3% above the 5.5% 10 year average annual growth. In North America, demand rose by 2.6%.
Alexandre de Juniac, CEO of IATA, said that air travel was a good news story in 2016. Demand for air
travel is still expanding ( Another Strong Year , 2017). In the first half of 2017, Juniac s prediction
already came true. In June, the airline market has demonstrated a substantial upward trend. Demand
rose by 7.8% with ASK, or ASM, capacity increasing by 6.5% ( Strong Demand Growth , 2017).
Given the expectation of growing demand, the airline industry continues to appear more attractive and

Fire burns red hot, it s a source of warmth and in some cases comfort. In the story To Build a Fire by
Jack London, fire brings new feelings to a numb man every time he makes one. The man starts out
calm and uncaring to his surroundings and the cold, but be the time of the last fire he built, he was
panicking and distraught. As the fire thawed out the man s fingers and toes it also thawed out his heart
and made the man feel more than he ever wanted to. At the beginning of the man s journey before he
made a fire, he was undeterred by the cold, But all this the mysterious, far reaching hairline trail, the
absence of sub from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the strangeness and weirdness of it all made no
impression on the man (London 302). The man was just as cold on the inside as he was on the outside.
He kept his mind clear by staying focused and observant, Empty as the man s mind was of thoughts,
he was keenly observant, and he noticed the changes in the creeks, the curves and bends and timber
jams, and always he sharply noted where he placed his feet (London 304). By staying focused and

Big Data And The Data
Introduction The term big data came into the picture to refer the big volumes of information s both the
companies and governments are storing. The data may be where we live, where we go, what we buy
and what we say etc. all will be recorded and stored forever. More than 90% of data is generated in the
past 2 years only and this volume is increasing day by day and doubling for every two years. In this
world, the organizations are using the data generated by us and no one knows what they are doing
with the collected data. Big data is defined as a lot of structured and unstructured data from different
sources, such as E commerce websites, online transactions, social networks, medical records, internet
search indexes, banking and financial services, scientific searches, weblogs, and document searches
and so on. Big data also can be described by four V s: Volume, Velocity, Variety and finally Value.
Volume: The term big data itself tells it is related to size. Big data requires processing of high volumes
of unstructured data such as data from twitter, network traffic etc. The volume of data varies from one
organization to other. Velocity: The term velocity refers to how fast the data is generated and
processed to meet the demands and the challenges in the path of growth and development. Reacting
quickly enough to deal with data velocity is a challenge for most organizations. Variety: Data today
comes in various formats, types, structured, unstructured. For example, the data may

Ryan Lochte s Gas Station Scandal
Case Analysis: Lochtegate

and celebrate culture, sportsmanship and athleticism. It is an opportunity for people to come together,
whether at the venue or at home, it is a celebration full of excitement. During this time, swimmer

at his head. This was only the beginning of the public relations crisis case. Three days later, Lochte,
returned to the United States and continued to stick to his story while being interviewed by the Today

the other swimmers were being held while they were being questioned, not being able to leave the

History Of General William Sherman
General William Sherman was in charge of the Union Army of the West. Under General Sherman, the
Union essentially tore through the deep south and the southeastern seaboard, destroying any factories,
warehouses or farmland that was used to supply Southern troops. His use of total warfare absolutely
decimated the South. I believe Sherman s March to the Sea was the most important event we ve
covered this trimester, because it purged the South of any supplies and destroyed their economy. After
Ulysses S. Grant was promoted to the head of the Union Army, he appointed William Sherman to his
former post; general of the Union Army of the West. He was given the task of taking the city of
Atlanta, Georgia, to destroy the factories that supplied the

How Did Primo Levi Survive The Holocaust
Rough Draft Surviving the holocaust was almost impossible but some manage to do so. Many people s
lives were changed due to one tragic event. While analyzing Primo Levi s life, we can conclude that
he was depressed by the torture he experienced in Auschwitz. His depression got worst as the years
went on. Primo Levi was born in 1919 in Turin. He was an Italian, an atheist, and a Jew. He went to
the University of Turin and graduated with chemistry Ph.D. Levi wasn t fond of the Italian literature
program (Paris Review). He says in an interview that he always loved chemistry. Primo Levi was a

When Primo Levi returned to Italy from the concentration camp, he was very eager to write all about
his experience that he wrote his first book. His first book that was published in 1947 was Survival in
Auschwitz. His cousin Anna Yona helped him by giving it to her editor at Little, Brown and Company
(jochnowitz). In this book, Primo Levi talks about every minute spent in Auschwitz. Primo Levi had a
very difficult time publishing this book. He makes the reader feel that they were there with him every

Primo Levi does not talk about any hatred towards the Germans. He believes that his actions and
thoughts be the product, as far as possible, of reason (new republic). He knew that if he detested the
Germans he would be following the precepts of Nazism (new republic). All the different mentalities
needed in order to survive are explained in this book. Levi states that in order to survive Auschwitz
one must retain one s mental sanity, one must focus on small distractions ( ). Primo Levi s publishes
his second book The Reawakening 15 years later. This book is basically the older brother of Survival

Stray Cats Collaboration
Today I met with a volunteer from the Cat Network, an organization that spays and neuters stray cats
in South Florida. The volunteer, Ibis, is currently volunteering at the adoption center, a place were
people looking to adopt a pet can find cats in need of homes. She takes care of the cats by cleaning
their cages and making sure they are well fed. She also lets them out of their cage sometimes to play
and get exercise.
When asked why the Cat Network is needed in our community she says that South Florida is currently
dealing with a massive overpopulation of stray cats. This overpopulation has continued to expand in
size and will only get worse through the years. Stray cats live hard and dangerous lives in the streets
and their lives can get even worse if they get pregnant. Cats can get pregnant the moment they turn 4
months, meaning they can give birth when they re only 6 months old. And cats don t just have one or
two babies; they have litters. Typically, a cat has around 4 to 6 babies in a litter. Finding stray cats and
spaying, vaccinating, and then releasing them saves them from living even worse lives. It also
decreases the amount of stray cats living in the area since the cat ... Show more content on

Asbestos Essay
Asbestos
What is asbestos you ask? Well asbestos is the name for a group of naturally occurring silicate
minerals that can be separated into fibers. The fibers are strong, durable, and resistant to heat and fire.
They are also long, thin, and flexible, so that they can even be woven into cloth. Because of these
qualities, asbestos has been used in thousands if consumer, industrial, maritime, automotive, scientific
and building products. During the twentieth century, some 30 million tons of asbestos were used in
industrial sites, homes, schools, shipyards and commercial buildings in the United States.
There are several types of asbestos fibers, of which three have been used for commercial applications:

Asbestos in the home can be very dangerous. It is very common for homes built or remodeled before
the 1970 s to have asbestos containing materials in them. During the twentieth century, about 30
million tons of asbestos fibers were used in the United States, and some of this asbestos ended up in
residential buildings. If you have purchased a home or are considering the purchase of one, the
presence of asbestos is nor necessarily a problem. The majority of individuals with asbestos related
diseases have been in the business of manufacturing, installing and/or removing asbestos products.
Fortunately, most people exposed to small amounts of asbestos do not develop asbestos related health
problems. However, there is no known safe level of exposure, therefore, all exposure to asbestos
should be avoided.
The worst possible place asbestos can be is in your school. Asbestos containing products were used
extensively in the construction of schools and other public buildings in the 1970 s. In 1986, Congress
passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) to protect public and private school
children and school employees from asbestos exposure. AHERA acknowledges that asbestos materials
in schools that are intact generally do not pose a health risk, and includes provisions to monitor the

The Importance Of Italy In The Aeneid
Virgil makes it clear throughout the Aeneid that Italy is a crucial location for Aeneas to visit on his
Odyssean like adventure through omens, prophesy and discussions with the Gods. As the Aeneid was
written to honour Augustus, any reader of it would know that Italy is in fact the future site of Rome
and therefore Virgil must show its importance to Aeneas and his future descendants. Previous to Book
7, the land of Italy, or Latium, is referred to many times by many different characters of the Aeneid yet
it is in this Book that Aeneas finally sights and lands at it. Virgil s description of this land with a great
forest and the river Tiber in all its beauty with all manner of birds flying about it shows Latium to be a

This shows how important the land of Italy is to the Trojans as the founder of their previous home was
originally from there and also gives them a strong right to return. Later in the Aeneid when the Trojans

not seen as him invading but almost a return home. Virgil attaches importance to the future site of
Rome with his lengthy description of the great warriors who once lived and fought there. In Book 7,
after Juno has sent the fury Allecto to create madness in Amata and Turnus, the men of Hesperia begin
preparing for war. They are described as the son of heroes and gods, whom neither fire nor steel might

Higher ranked schools have an option to weaken to protect their undefeated record. Higher ranked
teams can pay lower ranked schools to play against them. This would allow the higher ranked team to
avoid a loss. Many teams pay lower ranked teams to play against them. For example, Alabama (#1

example is Miami (FL) (ACC Coastal Champion) paid Arkansas State (3 5 record) $300,000 to play

A lot of people state that since there are so many teams, there is no way to play each team. This is
wrong for the following reason. Every team doesn t have to make the playoffs. Only one of every
conference (and one from the FBS Independents with six teams in them). Every team has a conference

An Analysis Of Southern Gothic Literature
Assumptions that linger amongst exaggerations of the truth are the cause for unnecessary explanations
of one s actions. Today, people are ridiculed for their differences. Humans, everyone included, have
become accustom to the feeling of curiosity and have no boundaries when exploiting faults in
everyone s moral and physical identities. In Southern Gothic Literature, artists and writers write to
expose faults in southern culture. They expose faults by creating complex characters that were
mentally unstable, choosing a spooky/odd setting, and addressing social order and morality. A Rose

Miss Emily s funeral presented an opportunity for the people of Jefferson to pay their respects to a
long time member of the community. The women came out of curiosity, but the men dressed in official
Confederate uniforms to look at Miss Emily beneath a mass of bought flowers, with the crown face of
her father musing profoundly about the bier and the ladies sibilant and macabre (Faulkner 211). The
ladies continued to disrespectfully gossip about her at her own funeral. Seeing Miss Emily under the
bouquets of flowers presented an opportunity for the women to reevaluate all Miss Emily s quirks.
Remorse for treating Miss Emily made the community talk as if they knew her. They only spoke well
of her at her funeral. Another scene that clearly represents the claim of the community falsely acting
as if they were close with Miss Emily is when the men were talking of Miss Emily as if she had been a
contemporary of theirs, believing that they had danced with her and courted her perhaps (Faulkner
211). The funeral had opened the eyes of the community and their faults of never getting to know her.
This is a type of respect that comes after not being able to do anything about the mistakes they could
no longer make up for. This idea plays a role in owning up for the harmful assumptions they made. At
this moment, the community hints to the reader that even though they created answers for her
questionable insanity, Miss Emily s faults and moral identity is what made her the most popular
person in Jefferson. In conclusion, the respect Miss Emily got after her death was pity respect that
contradicts every accusation made upon her

Porter s Generic Strategies
Porter s Generic Strategies If the primary determinant of a firm s profitability is the attractiveness of
the industry in which it operates, an important secondary determinant is its position within that
industry. Even though an industry may have below average profitability, a firm that is optimally
positioned can generate superior returns. A firm positions itself by leveraging its strengths. Michael
Porter has argued that a firm s strengths ultimately fall into one of two headings: cost advantage and
differentiation. By applying these strengths in either a broad or narrow scope, three generic strategies
result: cost leadership, differentiation, and focus. These strategies are applied at the business unit
level. They are called ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The value added by the uniqueness of the product may allow the firm to charge a premium price for it.
The firm hopes that the higher price will more than cover the extra costs incurred in offering the
unique product. Because of the product s unique attributes, if suppliers increase their prices the firm
may be able to pass along the costs to its customers who cannot find substitute products easily. Firms
that succeed in a differentiation strategy often have the following internal strengths: Access to leading
scientific research. Highly skilled and creative product development team. Strong sales team with the
ability to successfully communicate the perceived strengths of the product. Corporate reputation for
quality and innovation. The risks associated with a differentiation strategy include imitation by
competitors and changes in customer tastes. Additionally, various firms pursuing focus strategies may
be able to achieve even greater differentiation in their market segments. Focus Strategy The focus
strategy concentrates on a narrow segment and within that segment attempts to achieve either a cost
advantage or differentiation. The premise is that the needs of the group can be better serviced by
focusing entirely on it. A firm using a focus strategy often enjoys a high degree of customer loyalty,
and this entrenched loyalty discourages other firms from competing

The title of the novel, The Power and the Glory is assumed to have been taken from the last part of the
Lord s Prayer, invoking God as Our father in Heaven: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the
glory, forever, Amen . The title has a parallel reference to T.S. Eliot s poem, The Hollow Men.
Significantly, the word power is used for a variety of words and phrases, which means the ability to do
something supreme. God gives power to man with freedom and authority. The power and the authority
given to man by god are

Essay about Night by Elie Wiesel and The Hiding Place by...
The chaos and destruction that the Nazi s are causing are not changing the lives of only Jews, but also
the lives of citizens in other countries. Between Night by Elie Wiesel and The Hiding Place by Corrie
ten Boom, comradeship, faith, strength, and people of visions are crucial to the survival of principle
characters. Ironically, in both stories there is a foreseen future, that both seemed to be ignored. Before
the Great War begins affecting the Wiesel s and ten Boom s lives, both families experience a
premonition of a dark future ahead of them. Ironically, neither family chooses to listen to these signs.
In the novel Night, there are two events of visions. One is a character named Moshe the Beadle. He is
a premonition for the town of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I see a fire! I see a fire! (Wiesel 24). Everyone in the cart began to panic and look out to window;
however, there was nothing but the darkness of the night sky. Madame Schachters episodes kept going
on throughout the night until others had to beat her in order for her to be quiet. The train arrived at
Auschwitz, and as Madame Schachter began to scream again, the train stopped, this time we saw
flames rising from a tall chimney into a black sky (28). Whether Madame Schachter was actually
seeing the flames or they were just visions in her mind, she was a warning to the others to be afraid of
the fire. In the novel, The Hiding Place, Corrie s only brother Willem writes a doctoral thesis of a
terrible evil that is taking place in Germany. He wrote this paper at the university he was attending.
Willem spoke of a hatred for human life that the world has never seen before, He said, seeds were
being planted of a contempt for human life such as the world had never seen (ten Boom 29). There is
no explanation as to why these warnings were ignored. Survivors today beat themselves up
psychologically asking, why? Why did I not listen? Why were we all so oblivious to all of the rumors?
Throughout experiences in both of the novels, it is clear that having friends and connections in the
camps and prisons is crucial for survival and communication. In the beginning of

CASE ANALYSIS
December 7, 2008
QUANTUM OF SOLACE*
A Case of Golden Opportunity Commercial Bank
President Celso Valmores in his speech before the board members said: I would like to seek your
opinion regarding a major initiative of our bank, which is part of the implementation of Golden
Opportunity Commercial Bank s (GOCB) renewed strategy to be the bank of choice in terms of
consumer banking. To be able to finance this new strategy and to aggressively revive our bank, GOCB
is contemplating a major move that will, in effect, recover from losses brought about by increasing
mortgage default payments, valued at P5.0 billion. This move is designed to fully extinguish our
debts, create a new and dynamic bank and hopefully leave us ... Show more content on

A number of branches were increased to 30 from 10, which are located in the various areas of Metro
Manila, Cebu, Davao, Naga, and Baguio City. GOCB eventually became a highly tradable publicly
held company.
In his desire to further increase its revenues at approximately 300%, he sought new opportunities. The
bank teamed up with GRC and entered into a guarantee agreement with the Home Guaranty
Corporation (HGC) for the securitization of P5.8 billion worth of housing loans. The guaranty
program aimed to liquefy through the asset backed securitization (ABS) ranging from P10,000 to 1.0
M, with a yield of 15% per annum paid quarterly and a term of five years. This strategy met with great
success for 6 straight years of record increases in profits. In 2006, GOCB was highly leveraged with
as high as 85 percent. However, it managed to lower the debt ratio to 60 percent to retain shareholder
confidence and ensure the bank s eligibility for a B bond rating. Strong reputable brand name,
financial strength, and a strategic fit were the three key ingredients why the GOCB s 10 million shares
had market value of P250 each which is 10 times the net income per share. This further boosted its
market position to hold the top 20 spot with a total resource base of P35 billion as of December 2007,
which comprised of 10% of the entire banking industry s total resources.

Value Maximization Is Not The Optimal Approach
Enhanced Value Maximization. According to HBS Professor Michael C. Jensen (2000), pursuing only
one objective, i.e. profit maximization is not the optimal approach. A manager must develop a
structure that will help employees to resist the temptation to maximize the short term financial
performance of the organization as that s a sure way to destroy value. Though, a manager needs to
take into account the impact of their decisions on all the stakeholders as the first step towards value
maximization, the stakeholder theory falls short in describing how managers should make the
necessary tradeoffs among competing interests of its stakeholders. Jensen writes in his paper that a
manager needs to make necessary tradeoffs among the interest of ... Show more content on

Managers are looking to globalize operations, developing new markets for their products for better
strategic business outcomes. Consumers have better access to a greater variety of goods and services
and competition to reach to the new markets with the right product is getting stronger among
businesses. Globalization also gives businesses better access to a global workforce, enables them to
tap into international raw materials and financial resources. As the world economy is fast becoming a
single interdependent system, businesses have competitors, customers, employees from anywhere in
the world. As indicated in the article Leading in a Globalizing World , the author emphasized that
being successful in the global business environment takes special skills. As global managers, the
biggest challenge is to improve upon their ability to deal with ambiguity, complexity, and diversity.
Understanding the bigger picture and acquiring the global vision is the key, i.e. staying informed what
the competitors are doing, what customers prefer at different markets. For example, a global manager
needs to understand that a customer in China might probably have different preferences than a
customer living in Europe. As complex as business is today, it is important to recognize that a manager
would never have all the information / details before making a decision. Taking a moderate amount of
risks

  • 2. Savior Siblings Be Banned This essay will discuss the concerns mentioned in Sheldon s article Should Selecting Savior Siblings Be Banned? Through the use of PGD, Sheldon s arguments of designer babies and slippery slopes and mean, ends, and commodification, critically evaluated in the favor of banning savior siblings . A preimplantation genetic diagnosis, known as PGD, is a screening test that physicians use to determine the presence of genetic and/or chromosomal disorders in intro fertilization embryos. The first argument against permitting the deliberate creation of saviour siblings, is that to do so would be to step onto a slippery slope towards allowing designer babies. However, unlike the wetland mitigation system, conservation offsets do not have a stated no net loss goal, but instead have a species recovery goal. Both conservation and wetlands mitigation banks are privately or publicly owned lands which are protected and managed for its ecological value. By doing this, the bank sponsor generates habitat or wetland or stream credits to sell to developers or transportation departments who need to offset their impacts and comply with the legal requirements for the permitting of development or roadway projects. Plus studies have shown that on site mitigation often failed to produce compensatory wetland resource values (Ruhl et al., 2005). Wetland mitigation seeks to replace functions that are damaged or lost at the impact site by creating, restoring, or enhancing wetlands nearby, generally in the same watershed or eco region. When wetland mitigation banks are not available, the alternative is on site or off site mitigation performed by the permit applicant. These project specific mitigation sites led to small, isolated wetlands being restored that provided minimal ecological uplift to the watershed. Wetland mitigation banking can be used to combine the smaller wetland restorations sites into larger restored habitats that can better replace the lost functions from the impacts. Regulatory agencies express a preference for wetland credits generated from restoration, creation, or enhancement instead of preservation. This is in line with the no net loss policy, which seeks to maintain the wetland acreage or even increase the acreage in the United States. Conservation banking took the idea of wetland banking and transformed it into threatened and endangered species conservation with a few alterations. The primary objective of wetland mitigation is to meet the no net loss goal by replacing the acreage and function of the wetland areas that will be impacted by a proposed project. The goal of ... • 4. A Report On The Outbreak Of Salmonella Salmonella is a gram negative bacterium present in contaminated food or water. Typhoid fever is a systemic infection caused by the serotype Salmonella typhi and can be fatal without proper intervention. Instances of resistant typhoid are high in less developed countries. Resistance occurs when genetic mutations prevent antibiotic mechanisms of action, making current antibiotics less effective. The purpose of this drug screen was to target oncological drugs and diversity library compounds to identify novel antibiotic substances. To perform the initial drug screen, we exposed Salmonella typhimurium to various compounds and chemotherapeutic drugs. The positive and negative controls were ampicillin and Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), respectively. We used spectrophotometry to measure the growth of salmonella in the plate. Hits were identified as compounds with an absorbance below 2 standard deviations of the mean DMSO value, meaning that hits would have an absorbance below 0.065. We identified that the FDA approved drug capecitabine had an average absorbance of 0.035. To perform a dosing series, capecitabine was diluted in a 1:2 ratio, making 13 dilutions total. The dosing series revealed that capecitabine is most effective at doses lower than 6.25 μM. Through this process, we determined that the oncological drug Capecitabine (Xeloda) has dose dependent antibiotic properties. • 7. Importance Of Social Entrepreneurship Essay IS SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP THE BEST WAY TO HELP PEOPLE IN NEED? Entrepreneurship is the process of designing, launching and running a new business while social entrepreneurs launch the business and implement solutions to social, cultural, or environmental issues simultaneously. Bill Drayton once said, There is nothing more powerful than a new idea in the hands of a social entrepreneur. In the world, there are billions of people have no access to education, healthcare, clean drinking water, food and even the basic human rights and respect. Violence, poverty and more global issues are at the alarm rate nowadays. These matters have to be tackled immediately before it is too late to do so. In our opinion, social entrepreneurship is the best way to help the needy and overcome the problem. New ideas, opportunities and technologies are sought in solving long standing social problems. There is a good example to indicate our words, social entrepreneur in South America, Steve Katsaros. Can you imagine what was life like when oil lamps and candles were all we had to light our cities with? Indoors was just as treacherous as outdoors. Katsaros invented a solar powered light bulb that provide isolated villages with power, thus bypassing the need to bring a power infrastructure out to remote areas. It has brought a great change in their daily lives which allow people to work, study and play at night without the use of kerosene lamps, which may pollute the environment and arise the respiratory diseases such as asthma. Consequently, Katsaros was able to bring convenience to the people while he can also stay in his business by selling the bulbs to the people. (The Guardian, 2009) To cite the saying that social entrepreneurship is the best way to help people in need, we would like to provide an outstanding example of social enterprise which is Grameen Bank. Grameen Bank was officially founded in 1983 by Muhammad Yunus and it provides small loans, rather than charity, to the poorest of the poor especially women in Bangladesh. This indeed provides an opportunity for the people to transform their lives. First of all, Bill 60 is officially defined as being a charter affirming the values of State secularism and religious neutrality and equality between women and men, and providing a framework for accommodation requests (National Assembly, Bill 60, 2014). This definition can be interpreted in simpler terms. To begin, people who work in governmental positions, for example, must be impartial when it comes to religious elements and show how non religious or spiritual the State is (National Assembly, Bill 60, 2014). Furthermore, when it comes to accommodation requests made on religious grounds, some elements have to be respected. In the 1940s, President Franklin Roosevelt s Message to Congress promised the people of America Four Freedoms, or freedoms that are imperative to human life. These freedoms included freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Freedom of speech goes back to the first amendment where there is the liberty of expression. Freedom of worship allows people to practice any belief system they desire, as well as worship the God that they please. Freedom from want meant no citizen should have to yearn for the basic needs to survive, and should be provided with a standard living. Finally, freedom from fear meant for there to be no fear of having to use aggression against a neighbor, in addition to being granted peace and a sense of security. These were the guaranteed freedoms stated by the president for the future. However, as time progressed and certain events in history began occurring, these freedoms may have slipped from view and become less practiced. It is clear to see that the United States government did not effectively uphold these freedoms during, the time the U.S declared war against the Japanese, during the scare of Communism, and in the day to day life for citizens in minority groups. The competitive structure of an industry can be described as either fragmented or consolidated. A consolidated industry consists of few, but large companies. The basis of this reasoning is that higher consumer demand can be shared amongst industry participants. Companies in this market would not have to fight one another over customers. Inversely, industries with declining demand, forces companies to fight each other for the small, residual demand left within the market. Now, a company can grow only by taking market share away from other companies (Hill Jones, 2012, pg. 62). Industries that exhibit such a characteristic are deemed unattractive and lead to lower profit margins. The airline industry has exhibited high grow throughout 2016. Seeing Miss Emily under the bouquets of flowers presented an opportunity for the women to reevaluate all Miss Emily s quirks. Remorse for treating Miss Emily made the community talk as if they knew her. They only spoke well of her at her funeral. Another scene that clearly represents the claim of the community falsely acting as if they were close with Miss Emily is when the men were talking of Miss Emily as if she had been a contemporary of theirs, believing that they had danced with her and courted her perhaps (Faulkner 211). The funeral had opened the eyes of the community and their faults of never getting to know her.
