Liberty Was Not Absolute For Anyone In The Beginning Stages
Liberty was not absolute for anyone in the beginning stages of America. An anonymous author wrote,
God gave mankind freedom by nature and made every man equal to his neighbor. Unfortunately, for
the African American slaves, women and the Native Americans, freedom was hard to obtain until the
American Revolution changed the principals of independence.
African Americans have an extraordinary past that includes the lifestyles before slavery, during
slavery, and the beginning of the abolition and petitions which lead to their freedom. Many people are
unaware of the African American lifestyle before slavery took place. Much like the Europeans,
African Americans lived similar lifestyles with homes and families, rich and poor classes, enjoyed ...

The new independence talks about having freedom and unfree labor but that s not the case for African
Americans. The abolition and emancipation was a slow process because veterans of the war were
promised 300 acres of land and a slave. This made the process difficult for whites to accept the fact
that if the slaves were granted freedom, they would possibly have their land taken as well as their
slaves. Another possible cause for the slow start of slave freedom is that all the founding fathers
owned slaves which then made people think that it s okay to own slaves as well. Slaves began to run
away from their masters to British lines and would try to pass as freeborn. General Henry Clinton
offered sanctuary to any slave that escaped to British lines. Soon, Northern states and the upper parts
of the south began emancipation of slaves. Free communities started to emerge which led to families,
schools, churches and leaders to grow and live. Finally, African Americans had their freedom back and
began to start a community.
Women before the American Revolution were viewed as weak, less important and not as intelligent as
men. The rights and freedom of women were nonexistent; women couldn t vote, own property, sign
contracts and/or wills or divorce their husbands. The man of the family had total power and authority
over their wives and children. The common role for a woman was to cook, clean, sew, take care of the
family garden and care

The Musculoskeletal System
What is musculoskeletal system?
The musculoskeletal system, also known as the locomotor system, is the system which involves
around the body s structure and the movement of bones via the use of muscles in the body. This
system has many parts such as muscles, bone structure, ligaments, cartilage, tendons, joints and other
connective tissues involved in this system.
Structure of the bones
The bones are one of the most important structures in the musculoskeletal system as it supports the
body, provides the body a form and provides stability. There are 206 bones in the body which protects
the vital organs such as the heart, lungs and other vital organs as well as the skull which protects the
brain. Bones also allows the body to store minerals and within a bone there is bone marrow located in
the middle of the bone and this produces white blood cells (WBC), red blood cells (RBC) and
platelets. The types of bones are skull, spine, chest, arms, legs, hands, pelvis, and feet.

There are 3 types of bones in human body, the fibrous, cartilaginous and the synovial joint. The
fibrous joints are immovable such as the skull and are held together by ligaments. The cartilaginous
joint is partially movable such as the vertebrates in our spine and their connection with one and
another and can classified into 2 types of cartilaginous joints, synchondroses and sympheses.
Synchondroses joints are joints that are temporary joints that are found in children until the end of
puberty while sympheses joints are permanent joints such as the pubic symphesis. Synovial joints are
joints that a freely movable such as the 6 common known joints in our body, which

Mythology and Archetypes in Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird
Of all the various approaches to criticism, the Mythological/Archetypal achieves the greatest impact
over the entire literary scope, because the themes and patterns unearthed apply universally to all
works, yielding results that can be applied to a great many texts. This is because the very nature of the
Mythological/Archetypal approach is the exploration of the canon for widespread and pervading
symbols, plots, and characters. These are all greatly extant in Harper Lee s classic novel To Kill a
Mockingbird, an extraordinary examination of the Depression era South through the eyes of a young
girl with rare intelligence and insight, living in a small town ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Through Tom, the legal and social rights of the entire community are called into question. Tom s
injury, therefore, represents the injury of all the people he epitomizes.
These symbols can be illustrated many places elsewhere in the literary canon. For example, the
archetypal character of the crippled man symbolizing a crippled society can be perceived in the
character of Benjy Compton in William Faulkner s tremendously symbolic novel The Sound and the
Fury; Benjy, who is severely mentally challenged, has no concept of time and is preyed upon by
vulturous members of his world, including his black care giver and his older brother Jason. Benjy
represents Faulkner s conception of the decaying Southern gentility; that the sense of time is skewed
(with its emphasis on the conservative old ways and the antebellum morality, the South, like Benjy, is
living in a mixed world of past and present which is largely responsible for its failure and decline) and
that its fate is beyond its control. Harper Lee s use of Tom Robinson is very similar: the arm,
destroyed by a cotton gin (possibly symbolizing the damaging mechanization of modern society),
represents the black communities lack of power and strength; however, all is not negative: Tom has a

Women Of Aspasia Of Miletus
Aspasia of Miletus, born during the 5th century BC, was renown for her outspoken ways and for being
the mistress of the statesman Pericles. The expectations of women throughout that century, such as
staying at home and serving their spouse, were adhered to by many. However, she defied these
expectations which thus resulted in gaining large controversy, yet respect from Athenian citizens.
Aspasia s intellect resulted in a minority of Athenian citizens holding her in high esteem. It is said that
some Athenian men even brought their wives to her in hopes that they would gain some insight and
intellect from her words. Whilst Aspasia was revered as one of the most influential women of Ancient
Greece, especially during the 5th century BC, there were many women who were left ignored due to
their supposed lack of influence. These include women such as Gorgo of Sparta; the mistress of the
Spartan king named Leonidas, Sappho of Lesbos; a renown lyrical poet, Telesilla of Argos; a poet, and
multiple others.
Prior to her courtship with Pericles, Aspasia s influence had already transcended to a minority of the
population due to her position as a hetaera. She was an Athenian immigrant and her life before she
traveled to Athens is still being debated today. Several sources have suggested that Aspasia arrived
along with her older sister who later married Alcibiades, a man ostracised from Athens . During her
time in Athens, Aspasia was a hetaera women who were hired as male

Analysis Of The Charge Of The Light Brigade
The Charge of the Light Brigade by Tennyson The charge of the light brigade by Tennyson was
written about a disastrous military escapade during the Crimean war. The Crimean war was fought
between Russia on one hand and Britain, France and Turkey on the other. The charge of the light
brigade occurred in November 1854 at Balaclava in the Crimea. The Earl of Cardigan led the charge,
and some six hundred cavalrymen took part in it. The brave 600 rode straight down a valley that was
fortified at its end by many cannon served by Russian and Cossack gunners. The heroes were
following confused orders from higher military authority as the rode into this valley of death.
Tennyson was appointed Poet Laureate by Queen Victoria in 1850, a job ... Show more content on

The instructions given seem incredibly stupid, Charge for the guns! He said; Because it is obvious to
the reader that there is no way that a brigade of horseback soldiers will be able to compete when faced
with cannons. These instructions seem completely irrational, with the results only able to be horrific
losses to the Light Brigade. The semi colon at the end of the line is there to allow the reader a pause to
take in this shocking instruction. Verse two begins by repeating the instruction to go forth into the
valley. It is followed by the rhetorical question Was there a man dismay d? The command is described
only as a blunder , as though it isn t that big a mistake. Tennyson doesn t use a very explicit word in
his criticism, very possibly because as poet laureate it was part of his job to show the establishment in
the best possible light, irrelevant to the situation. Unquestioning loyalty to the empire is expected from
the soldiers, it wasn t seen as their place to question or challenge orders given to them from higher
ranks, Theirs not to make reply, theirs not to reason why A sense of foreboding is created with, Theirs
to do and die , But the emphasis is on their unstoppable courage and their willingness to die for their
country. The repeated patterning of the use of theirs to start three consecutive rows is done to
emphasise the position in which the soldiers have found themselves, and the sacrifice they will have to
make.

A Study On Alcoholics Anonymous Essay
Alcoholics Anonymous has held an almost sacred spot in our society as the way for addicts to get
sober through spiritual means, with many people having anecdotal stories and experiences
corroborating this belief. To full examine the ethicality of AA, an in depth look at AA is required. A
study of its history, a description of the program, the success rates and commonly held harmful beliefs
of AA, alternatives to AA, and finally an analysis using Rawl s Theory of Justice are all required in
order to fully judge whether the program is ethical or not. Considering all these factors, AA s
domination of the treatment of addicts and alcoholics is immoral and our approach to addiction itself
needs a complete overhaul, with full consideration of science and not spirituality alone. In order to
understand AA fully, one needs to first examine its history. Before AA, alcoholics and addicts were
treated very harshly. Alcoholics were viewed as morally deficient and lacked the willpower to just
stop drinking. When asked by an alcoholic whether there would be any hope of his recovery, the
psychiatrist Carl Jung responded No, there is none except that some people with your problem have
recovered if they have had a transforming experience of the spirit (Bob P. 1993). Jung was saying that
alcoholics are hopeless unless they have a spiritual experience, which he went on to say happened
very, very rarely. Thus, alcoholics and addicts were thrown into jails and sanitariums, and were left

Essay about The Persecution of the Hollywood Ten
Hollywood Ten For my arcival project I chose to research the Hollywood Ten, I chose this because I
am fascinated by the events of that occurred around this time and group. The Hollywood Ten was a
group of writers, directors, and other artists who bravely refused to answer questions in front of the
House of Un American Activities and were therefore sentenced to jail time and banned from working
in Hollywood. The actions of that the House of Un American Activities and the resistance of the

I find it interesting that so many people were swayed by what they were being told by the government.
I have the impression that American are very gullible and naïve. There had to be more to what they
were doing to convince Americans that Hollywood was friendly with Communists and poisoning them
with their movies. When I think of Americans today, many of them raise an eyebrow to what the
government is telling them. They will also often times do the exact opposite of what the government is
asking them to do. When Mike Bloomberg suggested making it illegal for restaurants to sell extra
large sodas, many people that I know went crazy and would deliberately get extra large sodas. These
people didn t necessarily like soda or need one of that size and most definitely knew that it was not
good for them; however they didn t like the fact that someone from the government was telling them
what they could and could not drink. These people felt that their rights were being violated. This is
how I view most Americans today, they are stubborn and are very protective of their rights. Which is
why I find it hard to believe that people actually bought into the idea that Hollywood was poisoning
them with Communist ideas and were in cahoots with Russia? My first experience at the New York

The Dangers Of Stereotyping
Stereotyping still occurs because the human mind likes to seek for trends. We often attempt to see
patterns and jump to conclusions. Sometimes it may seem much easier to simply assume things rather
than actually analyzing situations. Humans often judge others by generalization society created on
certain ethnicities and religions rather than challenging those beliefs. Stereotypes can also be a result
of people being a bit lazy and uneducated. Many times people take their own experiences they had to
assume expectations from others. Steryoping can be projected in many ways and forms. It it seem as
much as it has back in the day. I believe people have been judging and crititing one other probably
since the beginning of time. In Europe during ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

have been implied to all races, ethnities, religion and genders. It is smoothing that doesn t end.
Although there have been laws placed with the intuition of ending certain stereotypes, it is still being
seen today. Minorities are still being discriminated today. I do not believe that people should fear an
entire race based on the actions of a few individuals. There are people to be fearful of all races and
religions. Every race has criminals and people to be fearful off. I feel that people who have fear of the
entire muslin community are not thinking critically. It does not seem logical to me to think that one
need stop be fearful of innocent kids simply because of their religion believes. Although I think its
wrong, I have stereotyped. We all have. Stereotyping is almost like human nature. Everyone does it,
whether they admit it or not. It does t necessarily mean that your doing it with bad intentions. I have
been stereotyped myself. Probably plenty of times. People can be discriminated agianst for nearly

Essay On Student Stress
College students are stressed all the time, so much that it has become a daily emotion in their
academic career. College students stress increases when we go away to college because we have a lot
of freedom that we never had before. Some students have been so dependent on their parents for so
long that when it comes to daily task they are at so confused on how to properly complete it. In
college we experience academic, financial, family, social, and family stress. Stress is a normal human
behavior but it can physically and mentally harm us. To deal with stress one has to find ways to cope
in order to decrease their stress level. Ideal coping mechanisms for a college student is counseling,
communication , and relaxation techniques instead of leisure activities. As we go through the
transition of becoming college students we become vulnerable to stress because we are trying to find
ourself, keep up with our academics, have a social life and adjust to a new life. It becomes so much for
a college student that they easily become stressed. Even if students are physiologically stressed they
don t seek counseling, however others try to look for counseling because it gives social support and
interpersonal coping techniques that a college student can seek.In the article College Student Stress
and Mental Health: Examination of Stigmatic Views on Mental health Counseling Stated This study

Ellie Mercer Psych and Lit Serrano and Leitman Ordinary People Final Essay While depression can

to defeat their battle with depression. As shown in both Judith Guest s novel Ordinary People and
William Styron s essay Darkness Visible, music is a recurring symbol that functions as a helping aid
throughout the stages of recovery. Both Conrad, the protagonist of Ordinary People, and Styron are
tormented with severe depression and trying to overcome suicidal urges; Guest shares Conrad s
journey of recovery, while Styron reflects on his own experience of suffering. These stories slightly

Similarly, Styron uses music as a tool to provoke his writing s creative side, and in concurrence with
alcohol, as an alternative way to evade his attention from his suffering. Referring to music he states
almost in a passing fashion, I now see, as a means to calm the anxiety and incipient dread that I had

idea of the sedative effect that music has on him, but rather he uses it as a foreshadowing of his

Impact Of Thomas Jefferson And Geroge Washington On The...
Thomas Jefferson and Geroge Washington played a large role in the stability of the government.
George Washington was well respected among the public, which is why he was elected as the first
president of America after the U.S. had officially become independent from Britain. Moreover,
Thomas Jefferson was also a well respected leader and believed in economic equality for everyone.
Overall they both helped shape America for the better in the ways they led the country throughout
their presidency.
Washington was a man of character and rarely used force to settle issues. During the Whiskey
Rebellion, which was caused by the tax placed on whiskey, George Washington personally led his
troops to go stop the rebellion. This was the first realization of the need for a stronger central
government. Although many Americans did not like the strong central government style of leading
because it reminded them of their past rulership, it was needed for America to become stable.
Washington s response to the uproar helped build relations between people and the tax collectors,

getting involved with foreign affairs, Jefferson passed the Embargo Act which banned trading with
foreign countries. Although this was disliked, it helped create America s manufacturing. This also
helped to stabilize the economy of America. Although Thomas Jefferson opposed the bank, he
opposed it because he thought it gave too much power to the national government. He also believed
that the constitution did not have the power to do this. This helped stabilize the government because it
allows states to form their own banks and charter

Psychology Class From High School Essay
When I started this class this pass September I had a little knowledge of psychology. In my junior year
of high school I took Psychology as an elective class. I really enjoy it alot, it amaze me how much
there was to know about our brains. This September I came with the feeling that this psychology class
was going to be way different from my psychology class from high school. And that my knowledge
from my class before wasn t going to be useful at all. But I was wrong, this class has actually been
better than my other class. Because it has help dust off some of the concepted that I had learn before.
But it has also made gain more knowledge about psychology that I didn t knew before. For example
the next concepts are the ones that had impacted me the most: critical thinking and the eight essential,
implicit learning, short term and long term memories. I chose these concept because they have not
only taught me more about psychology, but they have made a big impact on me.
Critical thinking was the first concept that I was introduce too when I started the course back in
September. I hardly remember it from my pass psychology class so it was kind of new to me when I
first started to learning about it. I thinking that why I chose it as one of my most important concept,
because it was what introduce me to the course. Critical thinking is the ability and willingness to

judge is an independent and impartial party from the executive or legislative. Both parties are allowed
to present their own cases, and are treated as equals ensuring the basic right of individuals, and the
right to equal opportunity s are confirmed. Each party is also allowed to cross examine the other
parties evidence, to confirm the accuracy of the evidence. Accused persons are judged solely on the
evidence presented at the trial. This determines that evidence such as a past conviction, is
inadmissible. This advantage preserves the principle of treating a person as being innocent until
proven guilty. Equally, this protects the civil rights of the individual, as the adversary system is
structured to permit ten guilty men go free rather than convict one innocent man. Another advantage
that the adversary system has is that the accused has the right to be tried by their peers. The doctrine of
precedent ensures people are treated consistently, and justly. The last advantage is that all parties have
the right to appeal to the Appellate court. Consistently there are also eight disadvantages, that match
the advantages. Firstly, the judge is not completely independent as they are appointed by the
Executive. When individuals are left to present their own case the trial becomes slow,

There are three primary reasons why Newell corporate is able to create value for its business units.
During the acquisition process, the corporate office handles every aspect of the deal, so as not to
distract the divisions from their profit first missions. This is important since it frees the divisional

Newell corporate is excellent at streamlining that division. The case cites an impressive time of six

walk on God s path which is considered as a leader who can take you to a path closer to God which
will also be discussed in further detail. This essay will discuss in detail the two different aspects, Shari
ah and Tariqa in further details and their connections to each other.
Shari ah in other words, is known as Islamic law. Shari ah means right path in Arabic and it refers to
the essential principle which guides all aspects of Muslim life such as daily routines, familial and
religious obligations, and financial dealings. Shari ah s origin is from the Quran and the Sunna
(sayings, practices, and teachings of the prophet). Therefore, the Muslim legal scholars interpreted
them and named it as Shari ah or Islamic law. Moreover, it is believed by many Muslims that Allah
revealed his true will to Muhammad who passed it on from generations to generations through the
Quran. In

Battle Of New Orleans Essay
Fought two weeks after the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, the Battle of New Orleans was the greatest
American victory of the War of 1812. The battle consisted of two battles, both taking place near New
Orleans, Louisiana, however the first skirmish occurred nearly 15 miles south at the Lacoste and
Villere Plantations on 23 December 1814. The main battle occurred nearly two weeks later in New
Orleans at the Rodriguez Canal on 8 January 1815. The American Forces were commanded by Major
General Andrew Jackson, while the British Forces, consisting of about 8,000 troops, were led by
General Edward Pakenham.
The War of 1812 officially began in June 1812 with the very first use of the war powers of the
Constitution to declare war. The three year conflict between the United States and Great Britain
mainly occurred on the ground in eastern half of the United States and southeast Canada, because of

Because of Britain s involvement in the war against France they lacked the ability to reinforce Canada,
causing them to align with the anti American Native Americans in Canada and northwest United
States, as well as Canadian militia. The Battle of New Orleans was the last battle in the War of 1812
and was fought strictly between British and American Forces. The British, after defeating Napoleon,
began to focus their military efforts in the United States, and in doing so had decided that capturing
New Orleans would prevent the U.S. from using the Mississippi River to resupply troops. On 10
December 1814, British Vice Admiral Alexander Cochrane landed his fleet on the east bank of the
Mississippi River, near Lake Borgne. It was decided the Lake Borgne would be the quickest and
simplest way to get the British troops into New Orleans due to a deficiency of American forces present

Essay about Effect of Concentration on Osmosis
Effect of Concentration on Osmosis
Aim
To find out how the concentration of sucrose solution affects the mass of the potato chip left in the
solution for one day.
Prediction
I predict that when the sucrose concentration is low the potato chip will gain mass. This is because
there will be a higher sucrose concentration in the potato chip so water will go into the potato from the
solution. I predict that when there is a high concentration of sucrose the potato will lose mass. This is
because there is a higher concentration of sucrose solution in the solution compared to that in the
potato chip so water from the potato will go into the solution to even it out.

I will measure their length with a ruler in mm and their mass on the scales in g. I will have two potato
chips in each test tube so that I can take an average of the two masses and lengths at each
concentration to make it more accurate. The independent variable will be the concentration of the
sucrose solution. I will do the experiment at five different levels of concentration; 1mol, 0.75 mol 0.5
mol, 0.25 mol, 0 mol.
Each of the solutions will be 20ml. 1mol = 20ml sucrose
0.75mol = 15ml sucrose and 5ml distilled water
0.5mol = 10ml sucrose and 10ml distilled water
0.25mol = 5ml sucrose and 15ml distilled water
0mol = 20ml distilled water
I will make sure that all the potato chips are the same length and width by cutting them with the same
borer and measuring their lengths and cutting them to all be equal. I will not leave and potato peel on
the ends of any of them as this may not let water through as easily. I will put them all in the test tubes
at the same time and get them out at the same time so as they all have the same length of time in the
solution. I will keep them all inn the same place so they all have the same temperature and light. Once
I have got them out I will gently pat them dry, as I do not want to include the liquid on them as their
mass. I will measure each of

Prosecution Intimidation And Witness Intimidation
There are many reasons victims do no want to testify in court. Legal cynicism and witness
intimidation are a couple of the top reasons. One reason I feel is overlooked is witness intimidation.
Witness Intimidation is when threats are made by defendants to discourage victims or witnesses of a
crime from reporting or testifying. (Connick and Davis 439) If a victim feels threatened, they often
become hesitant to testify sometimes even to report the crime. With the right incentives, victims and
witnesses would be more likely to participate in the process of testifying against a defendant.
Witness intimidation happens in many forms, such as: looks, threats of violence, physical violence,
property damage, etc. If you commit a crime, you will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These programs are still new in the eyes of the justice system. Victims and witnesses receiving help
were more likely to appear when summoned than those who had not been aided. (Neubauer and
Fradella 236) Victims who are testifying against a defendant are authorized to receive protection,
whether inside or outside of court.
There are services provided to protect the victims or witnesses. When waiting in the courtroom, they
are entitled to a special waiting room, away and out of sight from the defendant and the defendant s
friends and family. By separating the defendant from the victims and witnesses, it lessens the change
of intimidation within the courtroom. Even victims and witnesses that are incarcerated have the option
and availability to be separated from others to keep them safe. By separating from certain groups,
gangs are not able to finish hits on a victim or witness.
Another way to keep a victim or witness in testifying is ensuring that everyone coming in and out of
the courthouse will be on video surveillance. By taping everyone coming into the courthouse,
hopefully it would discourage any intimidation within the courthouse. Also by having surveillance, it
would give the victims and witnesses a sense of security, knowing that anybody coming near them in
the courthouse is on camera.
One program to motivate victims to participate in testifying helps with compensating the victims or
witnesses. During the process of the trial and even before when

The United Kingdom Banking Industry
The United Kingdom banking industry, in the seventies and eighties, was a competitive and fairly
unregulated market. These two factors in most industries implies that there is room for companies to
grow. However, the market of personal banking was saturated all customers that needed personal
banking already belonged to a bank. The Big Four clearing British banks Lloys, Midland, Barkleys,
and National Westminster dominated the retail banking industry. In this industry, where the players
joke that, people are more likely to switch partners than banks, entry into this market would be very
difficult. Only 1 in 30 people switched banks every year. It would take a superb value proposition and
business model to acquire customers from other banks. Prior to the seventies, the UK banking industry
was not very competative. The Big Four flooded the market until the point of saturation. Then, in the
late seventies, the Bank of England allowed banks to offer a more full range of services, including:
share dealing and financial advisement. Furthermore, The Banking Act of 1979 allowed building
societies to offer personal banking services, including check deposit accounts and unsecured loans.
This act dismantled the interest rate cartel in the UK, removing at least one barrier to entry from the
banking and mortgage industry. Now, the Big Four was pitted against the building societies. Coupled
with these legislative changes was a decrease in regulation of the banking industry. All

Honor Codes In Tobias Wolff s Old School
The existence of honor codes has had basis in helping students learn since their inception, but there
are still those who object to their very definition. Nearly every institution centered around the
education of children has some sort of code of conduct or set of rules in place for the betterment of the
students. However, the term honor in the title honor code is what people can occasionally take issue
with, as the term often implies a much more respectful idea. This issue leads one to question the
purpose of honor codes. Although honor codes, like that of the school in Tobias Wolff s Old School,
exist for the purpose of bettering the students by ensuring that they all have an equal chance and that
they all do their own work, Mr. Ramsey objects to his school s honor code because he believes in a
much more personal and valuable meaning of the word honor .
Honor codes and codes of conduct have existed for about as long as systems of institutionalized
education have, as they exist for the betterment of the students. Honor codes often consist of a set of
enumerated standards that the aforementioned institution holds its students to. Without them, students
cheating would go unregulated, which would overall just harm themselves, since it would be
detrimental to their learning experience. The use of outside advantage to garner better grades would
make it harder for the students to gain the help that they need, as well as allowing students to proceed

The New Zealand Essay
The New Zealand (NZ) government essentially operates under the Westminster Parliamentary system
(Palmer, 3). This system was derived from the British structure and adopted in 1947 (Palmer, 4). The
defining characteristic of this system include the separation of government into three branches, the
judicatory, legislator and the executive, with each preforming different roles in the law forming
process (Palmer, 5). There is no absolute separation of power between these different branches,
especially between the legislature and the executive branch of government. Although, the introduction
of the Mixed Member Proportionality (MMP) electoral system has enhanced this separation through
demanding more accountability from the executive branch. While MMP has improved the system,
there are numerous recommendations that could be implemented to improve this accountability.
The separation of power in the New Zealand parliamentary system is pertinent for an efficient and
democratic government. The different branches of New Zealand government have to be detached to
ensure that one does not act unconstitutionally, nor has undue power over another (New Zealand
Parliament, 2014). Each branch has separate roles and acts as breaks to hold the other sectors
accountable for their decisions (Palmer, 5). The legislator branch consists of members of Select
Committees, Parliament and the Governor General (Palmer, 5). Their role in the system is to examine,
debate and provide scrutiny over drafted

profile of a killer Essay examples
During the last decade the world has witnessed a staggering elevation in serial killings.
To give some insight into the scale of the problem posed by the serial killer, in the United States can
be gained from examining the statistics for just one year. In 1989 (the last year for which detailed
figures are available) there were 21,500 recorded homicides, of which some 5,000 are unsolved.
Unofficial sources believe that as many as a hundred serial killers may be at large at any given time.
Add to this the number of known victims of serial killers, then between 3,500 and 5,000 people are
killed by serial murderers every year. (Lane and Gregg 3)
These numerous multiple murders, often without consequence and justice, have shocked civilized ...

Characteristics of a serial killer are imperative in demarcating the type of person capable of
committing a serial murder. quot; Most known serial killers are 25 35 years old quot; (Falk 85). quot;It
is also significant that the victims of serial murderers are not concentrated in any age range quot; (Falk
85). quot;Serial killings are almost always committed by white males instead of blacks because class
resentment is far more likely to occur to a person with a good education than someone without an
appreciation of how society works quot; (Falk 85).
To truly understand the phenomenon of serial murder one must know what motivates a person to
commit such a horrendous crime. Patterns of serial killing fall broadly into two categories of
motivation: quot;Extrinsic, where the impulse to kill is located outside the killer s psyche that is, he
perceives a rational reason for murder in outside situations and events quot; (Fox and Levin 12).
quot;More frequently the motivation is intrinsic to the psyche of the killer, whether or not that
motivation is apparent to an independent observer quot; (Fox and Levin 12). Closer psychological
analysis of known cases indicates that serial murders fit into one of four main types according to the
predominate homicidal motivation: Visionaries, Missionaries, Hedonists, and Power Seekers.
Visionaries include killers who act in response to quot;voices quot; and alter egos, where

In the beginning, Yuma was a just a small town that would continuously be flooding. Yuma wanted to
make something out of the small floodplain town so they decided to try to control the Colorado river

The dams prevented the transportation of steamboats from going upriver. The dams made the water
levels fluctuate and made the use of steamboat transporting goods unsafe and making it unsafe
because there wasn t enough clearance for the boats to move through without knowing if you were
going to make it through. To turn this around a few positive effects on Yuma County was in 1931 the
California Seven Party Agreement that states that Yuma County would be given water to use for their
crops. The 1931 California Seven Party Agreement states that the Palo Verde Irrigation District, the
Imperial Irrigation District, the Yuma Project and lands in Imperial and Coachella valleys are to be

Too Much Thankfulness
I ve been hearing a lot about this thankfulness thing. I can t get away from it. It started with
Thanksgiving. Before digging in to a big Thanksgiving feast at my daughter s house, we all took turns
saying something for which we were thankful. My grandkids loved the idea so much, that they have
continued the practice of naming something they are thankful for every night before dinner. They look
forward to it.
Then one day last week, while driving home during rush hour traffic I heard a story on the radio about
a monk named David Steindl Rast who believes that gratitude is the key to happiness. He was quoted
as saying, We all know people who have lots of misfortunes that we ourselves would not want to have,
and they are deeply happy, they radiate happiness, he says. Why are they like this? Because they are
grateful. It is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy.
I had just finished reading a book set in World War I, in which one of the characters was a soldier who
served as an ambulance driver. His job was to drive into the middle of the battlefield, pick up
wounded soldiers, and take them to the army field hospital. In the midst of all the horror, pain, and
death of war, this man tasked himself with finding beauty in the otherwise bleak and dismal landscape
of war. When he found something beautiful, he wrote it down in a notebook he carried. He had noted a
flower struggling to poke through the trampled earth, a soldier s

Drug Discovery And Development Of New Medicine
Describe and discuss recent developments in drug discovery. As our society is evolving so is diseases
many drugs that were previously effective to cure certain diseases are simply not as effective any more
or on the other hand there isn t sufficient medicine to battle the current new health problems that are
arising with our evolving society for example obesity and a range of cardiovascular diseases. In
addition many of the medicine available today either only treats the symptom or cures the disease with
the addition of unwanted side effects. Hence, this is why drug discovery and development is vital. It is
through drug discovery and development that new medicine is found.
Currently a lot of effort is going into Binuclear metallohydrolases as a target in drug development.
This is due to the fact this enzyme group has the potential to find solutions to health problems such as
erectile dysfunctions, osteoporosis, cardiovascular dieses and also even become the seed in possible
eradication of some antibiotic resistance.
The main enzymes in the binuclear metallohydrolases group that are most vital us are purple acid
phosphatases, metallo β lactamases and arginases. The homologous feature in all these enzymes is the
existence of two very nearly touching metal ions that hold the ability to attract water molecules that
will then act as a nucleophile in a very particular hydrolytic reaction the importance of this is that it
means that binuclear acids will have a powerful ionic

Freedom Riders Research Paper
The Freedom Riders were a racially mixed group, organized by the Congress of Racial Equality, who
challenged the south s segregation laws in 1961. Thirteen riders left Washington DC, hoping to bring
attention to the segregation laws in the south, and force federal action. The plan was to spend two
weeks riding the public bus system from Washington, DC to New Orleans, Louisiana. At each stop,
the riders would purposefully violate the segregation laws of the deep south by entering the all white
facilities, to see if the African American riders would be served. The group was committed to a
completely non violent stand, being trained in various responses, such as not making eye contact with
antagonizers.
Between Washington, DC and Atlanta, Georgia, riders encountered little backlash, unfortunately, this
was not the case in Alabama. In Atlanta, the group split into two groups, seven riding with the
Greyhound bus company and six riding the Trailways. The Greyhound bus left Atlanta an hour before
the Trailways bus. When the first bus entered Anniston, Alabama, a racist mob awaited them. The
Freedom Riders were not allowed off the bus, while the mob attacked the bus, breaking windows, and

Fool Me Once... Gimpel in Gimpel the Fool by Isaac Bashevis Singer is, contrary to what the title
implies, not a fool because of his morals, his faith in God, and his unshakable faith in humanity and
human goodness. Gimpel considers himself a self induced fool, so to speak. He is totally aware of the
fact that the townspeople mock and play jokes on him he almost encourages them to do so. But this,
and the fact that Gimpel is so conscious of how the townspeople all peg him as the town idiot, is
exactly what makes him the opposite of a fool. Singer gave Gimpel the ability to be a wise fool.

to be against him, his faith in God and His powers remains unwavering and true. In the beginning of
the story, writer Daniel Fraustino notes that Gimpel is able to weather [the townspeople s] humiliation
through his simple faith in God and the Bible. It is hard to believe that anyone could withstand such
faith in any higher power with all the trickery that Gimpel is forced to face, but he perseveres. When
Elka, Gimpel s wife, births a child only 4 months into their marriage, Gimpel is skeptical of whether

A Conversation Analysis

ANALYSIS OF SPEECH
People spend a significant part of their lives listening and talking, that is the main reason why
conversation is regarded to be the most generalised form of talk that concerns both speakers and
listeners and it is contemplated to be the essential ingredient in co operative undertaking (Wardhaugh,
1985). Conversation is informal talk involving two or more people and interviews are a particular type
of conversation. Interviews are regarded as meetings at which a journalist asks questions in order to
find out the interviewee s opinion. This is an assignment that analyses a telephone interview, so there
is an absence of eye contact, body language or facial expressions that are attributes of a live ... Show

Two examples that portray this representative type are: the suppositional statement made by the
journalist at the beginning of the interview that reads Are we losing the overall picture here, anybody
in West Yorkshire who s getting a bit sore that Tetley s getting the elbow? (journalist, first page); and,
the supposition concerning the name s change for Royal Mail to Consignia that it was like a flop, wasn
t it? (journalist, second page). Furthermore, certain speech acts in this conversation are examples of
direct speech because the question that reads as I think of stories like Consignia, you remember?
(speaker, first page) is associated directly with its relevant answer in its literate sense that reads as
yeah (journalist, first page).
In cases that there is a hidden difference of opinion, a suggestion of politeness is formulated in
positive face polite statements and relates to the desire to be liked and express approval (Brown and
Levinson, 1987 cited in Maybin Mercer, 1996). The intention of satisfying the face needs of others
while protecting our own is evidenced in this interview s utterances such as, well, if I see it from that
point of view may well be (speaker, third page) that indicate a certain kind of polite tone through

Creating Systems Without Considering The Users
There have been many efforts to create systems without considering the users. Furnell (2007) found
that while the rules for password creation had been clearly established, websites were doing little to
educate users. Campbell et al. (2011) tested a system that did enforce proper password creation but
seemed perplexed why this did not reduce password reuse or the incorporation of personal information
into passwords. This highlights one obvious problem in password research as there is a hyper focus on
user ability to remember a singular password while ignoring that users need passwords for dozens of
applications (Grawemeyer Johnson, 2011).
Instead of treating users as a liability, system designers need to recognize users are ... Show more

When viewed in totality, these examples plainly show the previously noted maxim that users can be
expected to remember at most five distinct passwords used on a regular basis (Adams Sasse, 1999).
Understanding and accepting these human constraints and limitations is key to developing any robust
and secure password schema.
This does not imply a perfectly secure system can be designed. With enough time, any system can be
breached (Katz, Ostrovsky, Yung, 2009). Instead, a reasonably secure password schema needs to be
derived. It should keep users relatively safe while affording them the ability to manage passwords
without concern of forgetting them or recording them.
With those criteria for success in mind, there have been some efforts made to meet the needs of the
users. Duggan, Johnson, and Grawemeyer (2012) analyzed company needs and suggested password
requirements be customized to individual users. While their intentions are laudable, though, the
practicality of their suggestions can be questioned. Most corporations will not see the cost benefit of
investing numerous man hours in implementing such a wide ranging schema.
Likewise, Ganesan (2016) proposes a single sign on solution for companies with an Enterprise
architecture in place. While this might be good for large corporations, smaller companies may not

Laylor is very helpful and take all the money she has and hands them against the main character.
Instead of thanking Laylor, complains she about that Laylor only got changes and it is hard to
exchange. It shows a lot of which type of person the main character is. Later when Laylor and the

Slaves began to run away from their masters to British lines and would try to pass as freeborn. General Henry Clinton offered sanctuary to any slave that escaped to British lines. Soon, Northern states and the upper parts of the south began emancipation of slaves. Free communities started to emerge which led to families, schools, churches and leaders to grow and live. Finally, African Americans had their freedom back and began to start a community. Women before the American Revolution were viewed as weak, less important and not as intelligent as men. The rights and freedom of women were nonexistent; women couldn t vote, own property, sign contracts and/or wills or divorce their husbands. The man of the family had total power and authority over their wives and children. The common role for a woman was to cook, clean, sew, take care of the family garden and care ... Mythology and Archetypes in Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird Of all the various approaches to criticism, the Mythological/Archetypal achieves the greatest impact over the entire literary scope, because the themes and patterns unearthed apply universally to all works, yielding results that can be applied to a great many texts. This is because the very nature of the Mythological/Archetypal approach is the exploration of the canon for widespread and pervading symbols, plots, and characters. These are all greatly extant in Harper Lee s classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird, an extraordinary examination of the Depression era South through the eyes of a young girl with rare intelligence and insight, living in a small town ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through Tom, the legal and social rights of the entire community are called into question. Tom s injury, therefore, represents the injury of all the people he epitomizes. These symbols can be illustrated many places elsewhere in the literary canon. For example, the archetypal character of the crippled man symbolizing a crippled society can be perceived in the character of Benjy Compton in William Faulkner s tremendously symbolic novel The Sound and the Fury; Benjy, who is severely mentally challenged, has no concept of time and is preyed upon by vulturous members of his world, including his black care giver and his older brother Jason. Benjy represents Faulkner s conception of the decaying Southern gentility; that the sense of time is skewed (with its emphasis on the conservative old ways and the antebellum morality, the South, like Benjy, is living in a mixed world of past and present which is largely responsible for its failure and decline) and that its fate is beyond its control. Harper Lee s use of Tom Robinson is very similar: the arm, destroyed by a cotton gin (possibly symbolizing the damaging mechanization of modern society), represents the black communities lack of power and strength; however, all is not negative: Tom has a ... The expectations of women throughout that century, such as staying at home and serving their spouse, were adhered to by many. However, she defied these expectations which thus resulted in gaining large controversy, yet respect from Athenian citizens. Aspasia s intellect resulted in a minority of Athenian citizens holding her in high esteem. It is said that some Athenian men even brought their wives to her in hopes that they would gain some insight and intellect from her words. Whilst Aspasia was revered as one of the most influential women of Ancient Greece, especially during the 5th century BC, there were many women who were left ignored due to their supposed lack of influence. These include women such as Gorgo of Sparta; the mistress of the Spartan king named Leonidas, Sappho of Lesbos; a renown lyrical poet, Telesilla of Argos; a poet, and multiple others. Prior to her courtship with Pericles, Aspasia s influence had already transcended to a minority of the population due to her position as a hetaera. She was an Athenian immigrant and her life before she traveled to Athens is still being debated today. Analysis Of The Charge Of The Light Brigade The Charge of the Light Brigade by Tennyson The charge of the light brigade by Tennyson was written about a disastrous military escapade during the Crimean war. The Crimean war was fought between Russia on one hand and Britain, France and Turkey on the other. The charge of the light brigade occurred in November 1854 at Balaclava in the Crimea. The Earl of Cardigan led the charge, and some six hundred cavalrymen took part in it. The brave 600 rode straight down a valley that was fortified at its end by many cannon served by Russian and Cossack gunners. The heroes were following confused orders from higher military authority as the rode into this valley of death. Tennyson was appointed Poet Laureate by Queen Victoria in 1850, a job ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The instructions given seem incredibly stupid, Charge for the guns! The semi colon at the end of the line is there to allow the reader a pause to take in this shocking instruction. Verse two begins by repeating the instruction to go forth into the valley. It is followed by the rhetorical question Was there a man dismay d? The command is described only as a blunder , as though it isn t that big a mistake. Tennyson doesn t use a very explicit word in his criticism, very possibly because as poet laureate it was part of his job to show the establishment in the best possible light, irrelevant to the situation. Unquestioning loyalty to the empire is expected from the soldiers, it wasn t seen as their place to question or challenge orders given to them from higher ranks, Theirs not to make reply, theirs not to reason why A sense of foreboding is created with, Theirs to do and die , But the emphasis is on their unstoppable courage and their willingness to die for their country. • 7. A Study On Alcoholics Anonymous Essay Alcoholics Anonymous has held an almost sacred spot in our society as the way for addicts to get sober through spiritual means, with many people having anecdotal stories and experiences corroborating this belief. To full examine the ethicality of AA, an in depth look at AA is required. A study of its history, a description of the program, the success rates and commonly held harmful beliefs of AA, alternatives to AA, and finally an analysis using Rawl s Theory of Justice are all required in order to fully judge whether the program is ethical or not. Considering all these factors, AA s domination of the treatment of addicts and alcoholics is immoral and our approach to addiction itself needs a complete overhaul, with full consideration of science and not spirituality alone. In order to understand AA fully, one needs to first examine its history. Before AA, alcoholics and addicts were treated very harshly. Alcoholics were viewed as morally deficient and lacked the willpower to just stop drinking. When asked by an alcoholic whether there would be any hope of his recovery, the psychiatrist Carl Jung responded No, there is none except that some people with your problem have recovered if they have had a transforming experience of the spirit (Bob P. 1993). Jung was saying that alcoholics are hopeless unless they have a spiritual experience, which he went on to say happened very, very rarely. • 25. Prosecution Intimidation And Witness Intimidation There are many reasons victims do no want to testify in court. Legal cynicism and witness intimidation are a couple of the top reasons. One reason I feel is overlooked is witness intimidation. Witness Intimidation is when threats are made by defendants to discourage victims or witnesses of a crime from reporting or testifying. (Connick and Davis 439) If a victim feels threatened, they often become hesitant to testify sometimes even to report the crime. With the right incentives, victims and witnesses would be more likely to participate in the process of testifying against a defendant. Witness intimidation happens in many forms, such as: looks, threats of violence, physical violence, property damage, etc. If you commit a crime, you will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These programs are still new in the eyes of the justice system. Victims and witnesses receiving help were more likely to appear when summoned than those who had not been aided. (Neubauer and Fradella 236) Victims who are testifying against a defendant are authorized to receive protection, whether inside or outside of court. There are services provided to protect the victims or witnesses. When waiting in the courtroom, they are entitled to a special waiting room, away and out of sight from the defendant and the defendant s friends and family. By separating the defendant from the victims and witnesses, it lessens the change of intimidation within the courtroom. Even victims and witnesses that are incarcerated have the option and availability to be separated from others to keep them safe. By separating from certain groups, gangs are not able to finish hits on a victim or witness. Another way to keep a victim or witness in testifying is ensuring that everyone coming in and out of the courthouse will be on video surveillance. By taping everyone coming into the courthouse, hopefully it would discourage any intimidation within the courthouse. Also by having surveillance, it would give the victims and witnesses a sense of security, knowing that anybody coming near them in the courthouse is on camera. • 26. The United Kingdom Banking Industry The United Kingdom banking industry, in the seventies and eighties, was a competitive and fairly unregulated market. These two factors in most industries implies that there is room for companies to grow. However, the market of personal banking was saturated all customers that needed personal banking already belonged to a bank. The Big Four clearing British banks Lloys, Midland, Barkleys, and National Westminster dominated the retail banking industry. In this industry, where the players joke that, people are more likely to switch partners than banks, entry into this market would be very difficult. Only 1 in 30 people switched banks every year. It would take a superb value proposition and business model to acquire customers from other banks. Prior to the seventies, the UK banking industry was not very competative. The Big Four flooded the market until the point of saturation. Then, in the late seventies, the Bank of England allowed banks to offer a more full range of services, including: share dealing and financial advisement. Furthermore, The Banking Act of 1979 allowed building societies to offer personal banking services, including check deposit accounts and unsecured loans. This act dismantled the interest rate cartel in the UK, removing at least one barrier to entry from the banking and mortgage industry. Now, the Big Four was pitted against the building societies. Coupled with these legislative changes was a decrease in regulation of the banking industry. All ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Honor Codes In Tobias Wolff s Old School The existence of honor codes has had basis in helping students learn since their inception, but there are still those who object to their very definition. Nearly every institution centered around the education of children has some sort of code of conduct or set of rules in place for the betterment of the students. However, the term honor in the title honor code is what people can occasionally take issue with, as the term often implies a much more respectful idea. This issue leads one to question the purpose of honor codes. Although honor codes, like that of the school in Tobias Wolff s Old School, exist for the purpose of bettering the students by ensuring that they all have an equal chance and that they all do their own work, Mr. Ramsey objects to his school s honor code because he believes in a much more personal and valuable meaning of the word honor . Honor codes and codes of conduct have existed for about as long as systems of institutionalized education have, as they exist for the betterment of the students. Honor codes often consist of a set of enumerated standards that the aforementioned institution holds its students to. Without them, students cheating would go unregulated, which would overall just harm themselves, since it would be detrimental to their learning experience. The use of outside advantage to garner better grades would make it harder for the students to gain the help that they need, as well as allowing students to proceed without actually ... • 28. The New Zealand Essay The New Zealand (NZ) government essentially operates under the Westminster Parliamentary system (Palmer, 3). This system was derived from the British structure and adopted in 1947 (Palmer, 4). The defining characteristic of this system include the separation of government into three branches, the judicatory, legislator and the executive, with each preforming different roles in the law forming process (Palmer, 5). There is no absolute separation of power between these different branches, especially between the legislature and the executive branch of government. Although, the introduction of the Mixed Member Proportionality (MMP) electoral system has enhanced this separation through demanding more accountability from the executive branch. While MMP has improved the system, there are numerous recommendations that could be implemented to improve this accountability. The separation of power in the New Zealand parliamentary system is pertinent for an efficient and democratic government. The different branches of New Zealand government have to be detached to ensure that one does not act unconstitutionally, nor has undue power over another (New Zealand Parliament, 2014). Each branch has separate roles and acts as breaks to hold the other sectors accountable for their decisions (Palmer, 5). The legislator branch consists of members of Select Committees, Parliament and the Governor General (Palmer, 5). Their role in the system is to examine, debate and provide scrutiny over drafted ... To give some insight into the scale of the problem posed by the serial killer, in the United States can be gained from examining the statistics for just one year. In 1989 (the last year for which detailed figures are available) there were 21,500 recorded homicides, of which some 5,000 are unsolved. Unofficial sources believe that as many as a hundred serial killers may be at large at any given time. To truly understand the phenomenon of serial murder one must know what motivates a person to commit such a horrendous crime. Patterns of serial killing fall broadly into two categories of motivation: quot;Extrinsic, where the impulse to kill is located outside the killer s psyche that is, he perceives a rational reason for murder in outside situations and events quot; (Fox and Levin 12). quot;More frequently the motivation is intrinsic to the psyche of the killer, whether or not that motivation is apparent to an independent observer quot; (Fox and Levin 12). Closer psychological analysis of known cases indicates that serial murders fit into one of four main types according to the predominate homicidal motivation: Visionaries, Missionaries, Hedonists, and Power Seekers. Before digging in to a big Thanksgiving feast at my daughter s house, we all took turns saying something for which we were thankful. My grandkids loved the idea so much, that they have continued the practice of naming something they are thankful for every night before dinner. They look forward to it. Then one day last week, while driving home during rush hour traffic I heard a story on the radio about a monk named David Steindl Rast who believes that gratitude is the key to happiness. He was quoted as saying, We all know people who have lots of misfortunes that we ourselves would not want to have, and they are deeply happy, they radiate happiness, he says. Why are they like this? Because they are grateful. It is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy. I had just finished reading a book set in World War I, in which one of the characters was a soldier who served as an ambulance driver. His job was to drive into the middle of the battlefield, pick up wounded soldiers, and take them to the army field hospital. In the midst of all the horror, pain, and death of war, this man tasked himself with finding beauty in the otherwise bleak and dismal landscape of war. As our society is evolving so is diseases many drugs that were previously effective to cure certain diseases are simply not as effective any more or on the other hand there isn t sufficient medicine to battle the current new health problems that are arising with our evolving society for example obesity and a range of cardiovascular diseases. In addition many of the medicine available today either only treats the symptom or cures the disease with the addition of unwanted side effects. Hence, this is why drug discovery and development is vital. It is through drug discovery and development that new medicine is found. Currently a lot of effort is going into Binuclear metallohydrolases as a target in drug development. This is due to the fact this enzyme group has the potential to find solutions to health problems such as erectile dysfunctions, osteoporosis, cardiovascular dieses and also even become the seed in possible eradication of some antibiotic resistance. The main enzymes in the binuclear metallohydrolases group that are most vital us are purple acid phosphatases, metallo β lactamases and arginases. The homologous feature in all these enzymes is the existence of two very nearly touching metal ions that hold the ability to attract water molecules that will then act as a nucleophile in a very particular hydrolytic reaction the importance of this is that it means that binuclear acids will have a powerful ionic ... Thirteen riders left Washington DC, hoping to bring attention to the segregation laws in the south, and force federal action. With enough time, any system can be breached (Katz, Ostrovsky, Yung, 2009). Instead, a reasonably secure password schema needs to be derived. It should keep users relatively safe while affording them the ability to manage passwords without concern of forgetting them or recording them. With those criteria for success in mind, there have been some efforts made to meet the needs of the users.
