American Apparel Case
was trading for $.65 a share, and the board had been under intense pressure for months to show it was
serious about turning the company around. If the stock hadn t fallen so low, Charney might still hold
the CEO job today. Apple s success under Jobs is often cited as evidence that the abusive and just
plain weird behavior of a genius CEO should not be held against him if that person is getting results.
But as we now know, Apple barely dodged some serious bullets thanks to Jobs risky behavior. In a
different regulatory climate, the company could have faced a major scandal and government fines for
either its anti trust practices or its backdating of stock options. If American Apparel s board had
moved faster, that company might not have ended ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His brand architecture company, the Arnell Group, won a contract from PepsiCo to redesign the Pepsi
logo and create new packaging for Tropicana, a PepsiCo brand. The new Pepsi logo drew mixed
reactions. But the Tropicana boxes, which debuted in January, 2009, drove people nuts. Customers
said the box was so different that they couldn t find Tropicana on the shelf anymore. They missed the
familiar orange with a straw picture. The blogosphere lit up with criticism. One blogger called Arnell

February, merely weeks after the new design s launch, Tropicana announced it would scrap the new

Essay on Economic Consequences of Software Crime
Economic Consequences of Software Crime
In 1996 worldwide illegal copying of domestic and international software cost $15.2 billion to the
software industry, with a loss of $5.1 billion in the North America alone. Some sources put the total up
to date losses, due to software crime, as high as $4.7 trillion. On the next page is a regional breakdown
of software piracy losses for 1994. Estimates show that over 40 percent of North American software
company revenues are generated overseas, yet nearly 85 percent of the software industry s piracy
losses occurred outside of North America. The Software Publishers Association (SPA) indicated that
approximately 35 percent of the business software in the North America was obtained illegally. In ...

v. Apollo, where the Supreme Court determined that a piano roll used in a player piano did not
infringe upon copyrighted music because the roll was part of a mechanical device. Since a computer
program is textual, like a book, yet also mechanical, like the piano roll in White Smith, the Copyright
Office granted copyright protection under the rule of doubt.
In 1974, the government created the Natural Commission on New Technological Uses (CONTU) to
investigate whether the evolving computer technology field outpaced the existing copyright laws and
also to determine the extent of copyright protection for computer programs. CONTU concluded that
while copyright protection should extend beyond the literal source code of a computer program,
evolving case law should determine the extent of protection. The commission also felt copyright was
the best alternative among existing intellectual property protective mechanisms. CONTU rejected
trade secret and patents as viable protective mechanisms. The CONTU report resulted in the 1980
Computer Software Act, and the report acts as informal legislative history to aid the courts in
interpreting the Act.
In 1980, the Copyright Act was amended to explicitly include computer programs. It now states that it
is illegal to make or to distribute copies of copyrighted material without authorization, except for the
user s right to make a single backup copy for archival purposes. Any written material (including

Music s Influence On Music
Music has changed the way people have looked at others, have acted, and how they see the world
today. The beginning of music started when someone discovered that banning on something made a
sound. Music became a hideout for people when they needed a place to send their mind. Musicians are
the biggest part of the music and making it the way it is. Certain musicians changed the way people
started to look at music in the 60s. The 60s were a time for standing up for what the country believed
it, a time to show the overpowered people that they weren t afraid. People looked to musicians such
as; Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, and many others for their influential music. Different
types of artists with different sounds changed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

recognized as a masterpiece incorporating songs of rigid three minute song format.
Hendrix never lived to produce another album, although; he continued to make other songs including;

Woodstock Festival in August of 1969, which included his incredible cover of The Star Spangled

a few awards in his lifetime, made number one songs. His singing, songwriting, and his amazing
guitar skills continue to appear today and inspire people today.
John R. Cash died on September 12, 2003, from not taking care of his diabetes. Although he was not a

The Ethics Of The Criminal Justice System
As the saying goes, hindsight is 20/20. It is easy to look back on the history of criminal justice and
scoff at the sometimes crude and barbaric methods of correcting criminal behavior. From speaking to
village elders to burning those who were deemed witches, human kind s endeavor to seek out and
punish bad behavior has been littered with what many could consider to be downright silly behavior.
Luckily though, all of that is in the past now, with our society and criminal justice system moving in a
scientific direction more so every single day. But is it really?
While many areas of criminal justice that seek out the truth have been enhanced by our growth in
technology, there still remains one discipline that has been praised by some and ... Show more content

It was not until the father of criminology, Cesare Lombrosso attempted to measure blood pressure to
detect lies in the late 1800 s that the modern polygraph s roots can be seen (Lewis Cuppari, 2009).
Soon after in the early 1900s, Vittorio Benussi expanded on Lombrosso s idea and included breathing
rate and pulse in the detection of lies. He even had a range of changes that constituted lies called the
Benussi ratio (Grubin Madsen, 2005). The foundation for the modern day polygraph had been laid,
and the controversy was about to begin.
The basic principle behind the physical responses to lying were narrowed down to skin conductance,
blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration (Lewis Cuppari, 2009). In short, psychologists believed that
a lie would cause at least one of these things to change, if only for a brief moment. John Larson and
Leonarde Keele put these variables all together and devised a machine that would measure and graph
all of these things in real time, aptly named the polygraph (Lewis Cuppari, 2009).
These measurements mean nothing on their own, however. This research paper will dive deeper into
the overall interview process, but the polygraph test itself typically consists of two main types of
questions: control questions and relevant questions. Control questions are basic questions with easy
answers, used to determine a baseline and even to embarrass the subject in order to measure how they
react to such questions. Relevant

It can also be interpreted, however, as a debate about the purpose of the corporation or about whose
interests the corporation should ultimately serve.
Various academics have joined the debate, arguing that there is an increasing consensus that managers
should strive to maximize shareholder value, and that doing so maximizes social welfare. There is also
a claim that managers are increasingly setting shareholder value maximization as their main corporate
target. This paper questions the existence of a widespread consensus that companies maximize
shareholder value or should do so.
Theoretical reasons to doubt the existence of a strong consensus are often related to the externalities
that a focus on shareholder value maximization would create.
How corporations are run can affect, for example, the welfare of entire regions.
Tirole (2001, p. 3) summarizes this line of reasoning by writing, There is no denying that such
externalities may be substantial [...]. Why should institution design ignore the natural stakeholders,
and favor the investors, who are stakeholders by design, by giving them full control rights and by
aligning managerial compensation with their interests? The doubts about the consensus on shareholder
value maximization, however, transcend financial externalities. Take the case of managerial
compensation. Critics throughout the Western world have called for legal

The Causes Of Alopecia
What is alopecia? Alopecia is identified as a partial or complete absence of hair from areas of the body
where it normally grows. Most people mistake alopecia for cancer but it is actually an autoimmune
disease. This form of disease attacks the hair follicles which causes the hair fall out profusely. There
are some cases where it s not so severe when it comes to hair loss. Some people only lose a quarter
size patch of hair in certain spots. But there are more severe cases where the person will lose all hair
on the body. The exact cause of alopecia is unknown. Researchers don t know what causes the
immune system to attack the hair follicles. Alopecia is mostly found in people who have a family
history of other autoimmune diseases, such as diabetes

Music Has A Negative Impact On Society
Music is a widely discussed topic that happens to take shape in many different conversations. One
topic that takes place in many conversations around the world is if music has a negative or positive
affect on society. This type of question is an opinion based that mainly depends on the person and the
situation in which the music is present at that time. Sometimes music can have a positive and negative
affect on society at the same time. Personally, I believe that music has both a positive and negative
affect on society. This can be said for just even one song having both meanings. Throughout this paper
different songs will be analyzed through their lyrics to determine which parts of society would be
affected in a negative and positive by each individual song. Now to go look at some explains of these
impacts through song lyrics and to see if they are negative or positive through my eyes. Music can
impact society in many ways whether it is in positive or negative way such as, emotionally, morally,
or even physically. Emotionally, music can make society feel like they re not alone. It may even make
someone feel as if that song exactly spoke about how that person was feeling at the time they heard it
or when they were going through a certain situation. Songs have a way of connecting to us, us
referring to us as human race, in very emotional ways that we directly connect with especially when
someone is in a vulnerable state. This article states Music has the

Politics Is The Practice And Theory Of Power And Resources...
Politics (from Greek: πολιτικός politikos, definition of, for, or relating to citizens ) is the practice and
theory of influencing other people. Politics involves the making of a common decision for a group of
people, that is, a uniform decision applying in the same way to all members of the group. It also
involves the use of power by one person to affect the behavior of another person. More narrowly, it
refers to achieving and exercising positions of governance organized control over a human
community, particularly a state. Furthermore, politics is the study or practice of the distribution of
power and resources within a given community (a usually hierarchically organized population) as well
as the interrelationship(s) between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Formal Politics refers to the operation of a constitutional system of government and publicly defined
institutions and procedures.[1] Political parties, public policy or discussions about war and foreign
affairs would fall under the category of Formal Politics.[1] Many people view formal politics as
something outside of themselves, but that can still affect their daily lives.[1]
Informal Politics is understood as forming alliances, exercising power and protecting and advancing
particular ideas or goals. Generally, this includes anything affecting one s daily life, such as the way
an office or household is managed, or how one person or group exercises influence over another.[1]
Informal Politics is typically understood as everyday politics, hence the idea that politics is
everywhere .[1]

Relationship Between Jack And Ralph In Lord Of The Flies
In William Golding s Lord of the Flies, a compelling topic is the dynamic between Ralph, Piggy, and
Jack. They all want to assert themselves as leader, and because they cannot, clashes between all three
characters can be seen instantly.
At the beginning of the novel, Ralph and Piggy seem to be the only people on the island. Ralph does
not show much interest in Piggy, but Piggy sees it as imperative that they get to know each other and
find out if anyone else is on the island. Right away, Piggy s brains and common sense are exhibited.
Ralph passively blows a conch they found, not with a meeting in mind but because it sounds cool.
Even though Piggy had the idea of meeting, Ralph is automatically seen by everyone who comes as
their leader simply because he blew the conch. This suggests that humans select their leaders based on
who brought them together. Jack then comes to the assembly, already with the leadership role of head
of the choir, and assumes he should be the leader of the entire group of boys. After a vote for leader
between Ralph and Jack, Ralph is elected. No one ever even considers Piggy to be a candidate, even
though he had the idea for an assembly and was the most passionate about setting up order on the
island.
Before discussing the dynamics between these characters, it must be understood what what shaped
their personalities in the first place. Trying situations force people to show their true selves.
Throughout first nine chapters, the three boys focus on

Defending Utilitarianism- Mill s Answer
Defending Utilitarianism:
Mill s posthumous answer to Nozick s experience machine
The greatest good for the greatest number ; that is how the British philosopher John Stuart Mill
famously summarized utilitarianism (Shafer Landau, 2012b, p. 120). He is not only one of the greatest
utilitarians, he is also a hedonist. Hence, he believed that this greatest good can be achieved by
focussing all action on attaining the greatest amount of happiness. Mill describes utility as holding that
actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the
reverse of happiness ((Shafer Landau, 2012a, p. 17). He defines happiness as pleasure and the absence
of pain, and unhappiness as pain and the privation of pleasure. Hence, Mill argues that only pleasure is
intrinsically desirable and only misery intrinsically bad (Shafer Landau, 2012a, p. 120). All other
desirable things are only desirable as means to promote pleasure or prevent pain (Shafer Landau,
2012a, p. 18). Therefore, in order to refute Mill s utilitarianism, one would have to show that there is
something other than pleasure or the freedom from pain that is intrinsically desirable. First, Robert
Nozick s attempt to disprove utilitarianism and hedonism in the shape of his experience machine will
be explained. Next, Mill s arguments in favour of utilitarianism and hedonism will be recapitulated in
an attempt to answer the central research question: why does Nozick s experience

Essay on The Simpsons
The Simpsons
The Simpsons is an original, satirical American sitcom cartoon, which is shown all over the world and
appeals to a wide range of audiences with its unique, yet basic form of humour. It stereotypes and
satirises the typical American lower middle class family. With its simple plots, exaggerated situations,
unrealistic scenarios, lurid colours, humour, animation and familiar pattern, it is a typical cartoon but
with an original twist. This makes it like no other cartoon made before, the twist is the level of humour
used in the Simpsons, and this type of humour is called satire. There are many other types of humour
involved in the Simpsons, but satire plays a large role in it The ... Show more content on

Marge is also like Wilma in that they are both housewives, really care for their children and aspire to
be the perfect wife. Another thing that has linked on is that quite often the naming of the families is
used as the name of the show/programme for example, The Simpsons, The Jetsons and the Flintstones.
The Flintstones did a spin off series and created a different sitcom that was almost identical to the
jokes and the theme, but it was set in the space age.
The only way that Flintstones and the Jetsons are different to the way in which the Simpsons works, is
the type of humour used. The Simpsons humour is a lot more complex and has clever jokes; it satirises
and makes a joke about political, literary, and cultural values of Americaand the rest of the world.
Whereas the Flintstones and Jetsons just make a joke about the time which they are set in (stone age
and space age) and the artefacts they use and twist them to be funny. For example in the Flintstones
they use a lawn mower which is really a pterodactyl which cuts the grass and speaks. This is why the
Simpsons is revolutionary, also because no cartoon sitcom has ever been done of just satirising the
typical American

Religion In Medieval Japan
Introduction:
Religion in medieval Japan is what i will be talking about and the subjects I will be covering are
worship customs, beliefs and influences.
Beliefs
Shintoism:
Shinto s followers believe that spiritual powers exist in the natural world. They believe that spirits
called kami live in animals, plants, stones, mountains, rivers, people and also the dead. so basically
kami the spirits can live in anything in the natural world.
Christianity:
Christians believe in one god a god that lives in the heavens with all the good people. Christians
believe that man and women were made to have a relationship with god, but bad choices that humans
make, called sin separates all men and woman from god. and Christians also believe and listen to god
when u die u will go to heaven with him were u will feel no pain forever. Zen Buddhism:

I approvingly agree with the statement that the ANZAC legacy has survived to this day as Australians

they represent us Australians. Source 1 and 2 describe and show the impacts of the war and the

The ANZAC legacy still remains because Anzac stood, and still stands, for reckless valor in a good

On this day in 1915 Australian and New Zealand troops arrived at Gallipoli and in 1916 the day was
named ANZAC day.
Not only does ANZAC day remember the landing or anniversary but it is the day we remember all
Australians who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. The
courageous story of the landing at Gallipoli and the ANZACS are still remembered today.
Memorial facilities and services are held at sunrise on 25 April, the time of the original landing, across
the nation, usually at war memorials. This was started by returned soldiers after the First World War in
the 1920s as a common form of commemoration. The initial official dawn service was held at the
Sydney Cenotaph in 1927. It was the first year that all states acknowledged a public holiday. Primarily
the services were only attended by veterans who followed the ritual of standing a moment of silence
while listening to a lone piper playing the Last Post . Then later marches were held in most major
cities and many families and other people joined and acknowledged them. Now ANZAC day is a day
when Australians gather, reflect and remember the meaning of

Should Animal Testing Be Used For Scientific Purposes
Many controversies are going on in the world on a variety of topics, and one that many dispute on is
whether animal testing should be used for specific purposes or for all purposes. Animals take a large
part on Earth, since they help the world and the human race with its desire of advancement.
Commercial purposes of animal testing uses its subjects to find the safety level of certain products for
humans. Scientific purposes of animal testing uses its animals for improvements in medicine and
treatments for humans, and research for animals. Many concern over the wellness of the animals as

Galanes affirms commercial products are tested on animal to ensure product safety for consumers (1).
The whole purpose of testing animals for commercial purposes is to confirm the products are safe for
human use. They rely on their results as well to conclude whether the product is hazardous. The best
way to see if it will be a threat to their systems is, by testing it on an animal whose body structure is
similar to a human. Yet, a majority of animals are in use for commercial purposes than scientific
purposes. However with the results, he/ she is able to discover more information with scientific
purposes instead of commercial things. To be brief, animal testing has its rights and wrongs as well as
its limits. Constant argument between the two sides brings the helping views from both perspectives.
A scientific purpose allows one to gain information and build up to new achievements while a
commercial purpose gives results of which product is harmful. Both currently make an impact in
society with their beneficial results. Yet with the information and number of new improvements one
makes, animal testing should only be in use for scientific purposes. With data and proof, one is able to

Examples Of Robert Frost Views On Nature
My perspective is Robert Frost views on man and nature .
The particular aspects of nature expressed in Frost s poems were often determined by the subjective
responses of his characters to their surroundings. He showed people who were emotionally strong,
either within themselves or through human ties, as feeling secured in their relationship with a
benevolent nature because they were able to accept it and its movements without fear. They were able
to cope with the violence that also seemed a part of the natural world. Those, however, who were
alone, weak, and fearful found in their environment a reason for anxiety, and it was in their eyes that
nature assumed hostile and malevolent qualities. Robert Frost apparently used symbol in his ... Show

He meant by this that nature acts according to its own principles without regard to human purposes.
He had no belief in Nature s holy plan , no conviction that nature linked his human soul to her fair
works. Nature was not hostile to man, for hostility would imply in nature a consciousness of
specifically human concerns. But nature did not oppose man s purposes; it simply enacted its own
tendencies. It was not friendly to man. Its unfriendliness was infinite, for it extended through all the
circumstances that surrounded man. Despite the check which they got when they looked for friendly
response from nature, human beings persistently wished for sympathetic intelligence in their
surroundings and hopefully construe ambiguities that may be taken for signs of it. Water, the
immemorial symbol of life, figured in Frost s poetry as immortal force operating in nature within man
s range of action, which can be channeled to accomplish human purposes or can overwhelm by its
exuberance. It was the conviction of his loneliness in an unfriendly universe that furnished the
substance of Frost s nature poetry. There was always something else in his poetry. All of them had a

After a review of nanotechnology initiatives, it is surprising that the Programa Especial does not make

the use of nanotechnology in México becomes worrying because of the increasing number of

When I step back and look at Passion Play, I see humans struggling to find their identity when faced
with times marked by great change within their society. Each character is faced with the dilemma of
adjusting to, or resisting, the alterations being endorsed within their civilization. It isn t a coincidence
that Sarah Ruhl set the final act of the play in the present day, because many of the themes found in
the piece are still very present within our society today. We are living in a time where those possessing
political power are indeed wandering too far into the religious sector of America, stripping away
freedoms that should belong to the people. Just as Elizabethan England and Nazi Germany, the
separation of church and state that this

Five Kingdoms In The 15th Century
During the 15th century, there were five kingdoms in the Iberian Peninsula, but eventually became
two by the early 16th century. Since the 12th century, Portugal had been an independent kingdom; the
turning point in the kingdom was in the 15th century when Isabella of Castile tied the knot with
Ferdinand of Aragon and resulted in uniting Castile and Aragon. Isabella and Ferdinand s first target
was Granada; the only Islamic state left from the once powerful Al Andalus. This step was a necessary
for consolidating their power and for religious uniformity. By 1492, Granada was under their control;
their objective was to have a kingdom with only Christians. They gave the Jews four months to accept
Christianity and if they did not they would be

Cool Hand Luke By Stuart Rosenberg
Those inclined to think about religious matters embrace distinctly different images of God such as in
the film Cool Hand Luke Directed by: Stuart Rosenberg, a central component to making the film what
it is, is the subtle use of religious imagery. The way Luke Jackson is presented as a character,
embodies this very likeness to Jesus through his actions, speech and posture. The way Luke starts a
bond with the other prisoners is through a boxing match and a poker game. During the boxing match,
Luke gets beaten up by his soon to be right hand Dragline. While playing poker, he wins the game by
bluffing a hand worth nothing and comments that sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand and also
during the poker game is when he attained his nick name Cool Hand Luke . During his sentence in
jail, Luke s family came to visit him so that he could say good bye to his mother because she was not
breathing to well on the account that she smoked a lot and developed this horrible cough in which she
and her family realized that she might not last until Luke got out of jail. After his mother visits, Luke
becomes more optimistic about his situation and because of this, the other prisoners begin to idolize
him. This is where we start receiving subtle images of Jesus and the 12 disciples because of the way
that they all began to follow him and be his support group. Such as the disciples were to Jesus. One
day while working on the road to Luke s leadership is truly shown, he leads the group

Psychology as well as the founding father of social psychology. Allport published many books
including The Nature of Prejudice (1954). The purpose of the article is to inform the audience that in

The Nature of Prejudice in 1954 and is a credible source because the principles Allport discussed are
still studied by psychologists and researchers today. In the essay, Allport speaks of reference groups

This article One and Done is an excerpt from her book One and Only and the reviews of this book
come from extremely credible sources such as the New York Times, therefore establishing her
credibility. The author s purpose for writing this piece is to argue that having one child is not
detrimental to the child psychologically, and only children are not different than kids with siblings.
This piece was written July 7, 2010 so the research and studies are very up to date. The main points of
this article started out with the argument of why Sandler herself decided to have one child, and this is
based on how the economy is sluggish... and raising kids cost a bundle. She describes the effects of
the recession on the number of children women bear, and points out that women are having less and
less children because of their high costs. Sandler then goes on to discuss why people urge families to
have more than one child, and she uses personal experience of a cashier in a store to exemplify the
pressure of having more kids. Sandler investigates why there is such an aversion to have only one
child, single children are perceived as spoiled, selfish, solitary misfits, because this is such a
believable stereotype, parents are pressured to have multiple children because they don t want to do
that to their child. Sandler uses the study by Granville Stanley Hall to act as a counterargument

Navaids in Aviation Essay
How would pilots ever get around so easily without the help of navigation aides? Navigational aides
have been around for almost as long as aircraft have been flying in the skies above us. The first
navigation system was composted of just a high intensity flashing beacon. These beacons were placed
on the flight routes that were popularly flown in the mid 1920 s. With more time more of these
technologies that help us navigate the world will be even simpler than today. This paper will explain
how some navigational aides work and how some of them came into existence.

To calculate a position in 2D the system has to be locked on to at least three satellites, but for a 3D
representation you need to be locked on to at least 4 satellites. Once the position is found the GPS can
calculate much more info like speed, bearing, track, distance, etc The GPS system is very accurate;
Garmin (a leader in GPS technology) states that their newest receiver is accurate up to an average of
15 meters. With the implementation of WAAS (wide area augmentation system) the receiver accuracy
can get closer to three meters. There are many different signal errors that can occur with GPS,
ionospheric and tropospheric errors are when the signal slows down as it is passed through the
ionosphere or the troposphere. Signal multipath error happens when the signal is reflected off of
objects. There are many other errors that could happen with relation to GPS that have not been
mentioned in this paper.

VOR s are one of the most widely used navigational aides in aviation. Fifty years ago the VOR was
introduced and it is still the primary navigation system in the country. VOR s are very easy to

direction and the other changes as it goes around the station. As the aircraft intercepts the signal, the

Employees must trust the people they work for, have pride in what they do, and enjoy the people they
work with (Wehner, 2015). This trust is established through management creditability, employees
feeling respected, and the extent that employee s expect to be treated fairly. Additional criteria from
the employee s perspective is the level of camaraderie employees feel. From a manger s perspective a
great place to work is one in which they achieve organizational objectives by inspiring, speaking, and
listening with employees who give their personal best by thanking, developing, and caring and work
together as a team/family by hiring, celebrating, and sharing in an environment of trust (Wehner,
2015). This is the Great Place to Work model. This model serves as a guide and these standards relate
to HR practices and have helped establish lessons learned for developing HR strategy and practices.
Companies are finding that in order to establish a great place to work you have to focus on culture
because ultimately trust breeds from the atmosphere and attitude established in your organization and
strong culture is formed when that atmosphere is one that values the people who perform the work.
There are certain areas where great workplaces stand out above the rest. The criteria from the Great
Place to Work Institute has brought focus on what successful companies do to manage their workforce

Descriptive Essay About Being Alone
We are dark as the moonless night, yet just as bright; intense and mysterious as the forces that shaped
us. Living in the shadows we fade from sight and mind, but we are always there, forever defending
what is ours. Porous and jagged, we absorb or repel anything as well as anyone who seeks to oppose
us. Whilst the ranks of our enemies dwindle over time we endure, unwavering in our determination.
Alone we are weak, ineffective, and ultimately meaningless. Together we are strong, steadfast and
spectacular in our simplicity. We as one eternally serve the greater purpose, all with the pride and
patience only our kind possess.
At first, we were one, mighty and strong, we were great, but without meaning in our existence,
without scope or direction. Then, there was heat; blinding, raging heat stronger than even the forces
that shaped us, it tore us apart. Shattered our very view of the world and separated us from one
another. As suddenly as the groundbreaking warmth appeared it was gone, leaving me all alone in the
bitter cold to fend for myself. For the first time I was on my own, my reality broken in an instant into
a million tiny pieces; it was overwhelming and strange, yet stunning along with euphoric.
In the beginning the silence was empty and lacking. After a lifetime of togetherness, the lonely feeling
of isolation cut deep within me. To have a mind of my own was both invigorating and petrifying,
thoughts echoing far enough in the vastness to be lost on their own

Christianity, Judaism, And Islam
World religions have been a key factor in the development of the world throughout the course of time.
Religions like Christianity, Judaism, and Islam have been the major players in the development. These
religions impacted the world and future development through their holidays, foods, and through their
sports. The future of the world was shaped around these three religions and more is yet to come. They
impacted the world in many ways, but there were certain things like all the different holidays and the
different cultures that were practiced to make the world have a more diverse culture.
There are many different holidays celebrated in each of these religions. Each religion celebrates
different holidays and in many different ways. The way each faith celebrates represents their diversity
from one another. Each religion stands out by the major holidays it celebrates and what each holiday

Christianity celebrates many different holidays such as Christmas, Easter, Ash Wednesday, and

These holidays represent what the christian faith believes in and they celebrate them to show thanks

Analysis Of I Was Sleeping Where The Black Oaks Move
As a reader, a human, and a creature, what makes one connect to the natural spirit world? Grievances,
mourning, and anger are human emotions, but could these three emotions be used to describe the
natural world of Mother Nature? In 1984, award winning author Louise Erdrick of French Chippewa
descent used personification, imagery, and a theme of unrest for the Native American people and spirit
to craft I Was Sleeping Where the Black Oaks Move. Louise Erdrich was born in Little Falls,
Minnesota, and raised in Wahpeton, North Dakota by her mother, a Chippewa, and father, a German.
The daughter of two Wahpeton Indian School teachers and the granddaughter of the tribal chair for the
Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation, Erdrich was bathed in the culture, life, myth, of the
reservation and Native American culture. In 1976, Erdrich received her bachelor s degree from
Dartmouth and soon moved back to North Dakota to pursue teaching. However, two years later
Erdrich received a fellowship to teach composition and creative writing at Johns Hopkins University
where she completed her Master s degree a year later. Upon the completion of her fellowship, Erdrich
moved to Boston and became the editor of the Boston Indian Council newspaper, The Circle.
Furthermore, Erdrich published several critically claimed works including Jacklight a collection of
poetry which included I Was Sleeping Where the Black Oaks Move ()

Bilingual Education Controversy
The Disputation Over Bilingual Education There are many aspects of the United States education
system that many people would agree need change or in the minimal improvement. One topic under
the education system that has had much controversy since it was first introduced is Bilingual
Education. Bilingual Education is the teaching or practice programs of two languages to teach content
ranging from kindergarten to high school. Bilingual Education programs vary in levels and languages.
Some programs are designed to assimilate non english speakers into the English language, others are
meant develop knowledge of a completely different foreign language. Equally the goal proficiency of
the language varies drastically. Some programs are meant to teach students the basic understandings of
the language in oder to write and speak it adequately and others are meant to allow the student to
reach a fluency level. One of the most popular type of program would be a Spanish and English
program since Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States. The most common
type if bilingual program is intended to transition native Spanish speakers into the English language;
this is way of helping kids assimilate into the American culture. However, the use of two languages
established in the education system has been a controversial idea since first introduced. It receives
differing support and has not been able to achieve a conclusive establishment in the public school
system. The

Wasp Nest Analysis
Wasp Nest Takes over Guest Bed in Woman s Home
Talk about unwanted guests taking over your home, a woman in Winchester, England found that she
had thousands of unwanted guests residing in her spare bedroom. It appears that the nest took three
months to build, but only a short time to remove.
The wasps had managed to take up space in the woman s spare bedroom for at least three months. The
woman s son had discovered the nest when he went to search the room for an item he needed. The
room had been closed off, except for an open window.
The wasps had managed to chew through all the bedding and the mattress on the bed, in order to
construct the massive nest that was found. We may wonder how a room could be left unattended for so
long, that is easy. The woman lives alone in her five bedroom home, and has closed off rooms that are
not in use.
An exterminator that was called in to eradicate the problem stated that he had to first eliminate the
wasps flying around him. He then used a powder to inject into the wasp nest and waited ten minutes
for the powder to take effect. In ten minutes, the exterminator was able to return to the room and break
apart the nest. He removed the nest to the outdoors. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Problem of God in Devils and The Brothers Karamazov
In contemplating the creation of the novel The Idiot, Dostoyevsky wrote in a letter to A.N. Maikov
that he hoped to focus the work around a question with which I have been tormented, consciously or
unconsciously all my life that is, the existence of God. 1 Dostoyevsky s personal struggle with the
question of faith, and also his own experience with trying doubts as a believer, are manifested in the
characters he writes. A large number of Dostoyevsky s books are written within the framework of a
Christian doctrine, juxtaposing characterizations of believers and non believers, enforcing the ultimate
good and reason that follow from possessing a faith. Dostoyevsky also ... Show more content on

Moreover, these childhood associations seem to have strongly imprinted upon his mind, This book

While a large portion of Dostoyevsky s nurturing seems to have occurred in a Christian nest, he was
also exposed to the harsh qualities possessed by man. His father was, though reverent, a drunk, and
was later murdered by serfs on account of his inhumane treatment.6
This rougher sphere of his upbringing manifested itself in Dostoyevsky s early adulthood. He became
involved in a group known as the Russian Utopian Socialists, influenced by Belinsky, a well known
literary critic. The partnership formed by the two presumably shook Dostoyevsky s faith, as his
revered mentor found that as a socialist, he had to destroy Christianity in the first place. He knew that
the revolution must necessarily begin with atheism. 7 Later, though, Dostoyevsky broke off from the
specific branch of the movement, forming the Durov circle. He was arrested for the circulation of a
private letter full of insolent expressions against the Orthodox Church. 8 Evidently, he had forgotten
his mother s teachings.
While in prison (where the only book allowed was The Bible) it appears Dostoyevsky began to
reemerge as a believer, writing in a letter to Mrs. N.D. Fonvizin:

The 80-20 Rule
The 80 20 rule is a universal principle that states that for any group of people or things that have a
common attribute, 20% of them will have 80% of the attribute. However, the actual 80/20 split doesn t
always hold up in the real world. Sometimes it is 90/10 or 70/30 or some other ratio that favors
unevenness. The main point is that things are not distributed evenly. This observation holds true for
things such as the distribution of wealth among the population, or of the distribution of talent among
the population. It doesn t matter if the talent is musical, athletic, or ability to make sales. For example,
within any business organization, academic school, or sports team, there will always be a few top
performers. As mentioned before, the 80 20 rule doesn t just apply to people. Vilfredo Pareto for
example, the man who first noticed this rule, found that 80% of the peas in his garden were ... Show

Exploitation however, is straightforward. Simply spend more time and more resources on the few
things that bring the most results while spending less time and resources on whatever brings in

My Development As A Psychologist
Chapter 42
Dr Gordon Mangan
Dr Mangan was far more influential in my development as a psychologist than I realised when I was a
student. I must confess that I didn t warm to him as a teacher. When I peruse his publications it seems
amazing that I cant find a full biography or bibliography of Mangan anywhere on the net. I am happy
to fill that gap now. It is high time.
Dr Mangan has a rare scientific talent that enables him to originate and follow uncommon ideas to
their conclusion and then substantiate his remarkable ideas with clear theorising and hard
experimental data.
An overview of his publications might lead to the impression that he deliberately chose areas that
were neglected and controversial. He devoted half a decade of his early career to parapsychology,
publishing innovative research and clearheaded reviews. He devoted the later part of his career to
research in smoking funded by the tobacco industry.
He had a lasting interest in Russian psychology particularly Pavlov and the neo Pavlovians. A
considerable amount of his work is devoted to drawing parallels between Eastern and Western
conceptualisations of personality, learning and arousal which culminated in an influential book The
Biology of Human Conduct: East West Models of Temperament and Personality .
As well as these three areas he published on a broad range of topics including intelligence, aging,
learning, conflict, behaviour therapy, personality, attention, music and arousal.

Analysis Of The Apocalyptic Destruction Of The Human Race
Zombie texts have been a longstanding subgenre of fantasy. Often gory and with elements of horror,
the apocalyptic destruction of the human race brought about by some form of virus is consumed by
many and is reoccurring in popular culture. It is often questioned why we find such enjoyment in a
text that depicts such horrors. The answer is in the role fantasy plays, which is a fulfillment of a wish,
a way to depict our explicit desires in a licit way, and to provide a screen for us to do this. World War
Z (WWZ) adheres to these fantasy elements whilst also highlighting the mediation between duty and
pleasure. The scene that has been selected for analysis is one where hero Gerry Lane is fleeing with
his family up the stairs of an apartment complex to meet the helicopter that is coming to save them, all
whilst fighting off a horde of zombies. This scene is tense, fast paced, and shows our hero fulfilling
his expected role and the desires of the viewers.
The scene begins with Gerry and his family ready to flee to the roof. The shot is filled with flickering
red light, red being a common symbol for danger, whilst the flickering provides uncertainty and fear.
These shots set the scene for the impending horror. Gerry s wife asks him, How do we know they re
coming? to which he replies, They re coming. From the start, Gerry is the all knowing, calm, collected

If the stock hadn t fallen so low, Charney might still hold the CEO job today. Apple s success under Jobs is often cited as evidence that the abusive and just plain weird behavior of a genius CEO should not be held against him if that person is getting results. But as we now know, Apple barely dodged some serious bullets thanks to Jobs risky behavior. In a different regulatory climate, the company could have faced a major scandal and government fines for either its anti trust practices or its backdating of stock options. Apollo, where the Supreme Court determined that a piano roll used in a player piano did not infringe upon copyrighted music because the roll was part of a mechanical device. Since a computer program is textual, like a book, yet also mechanical, like the piano roll in White Smith, the Copyright Office granted copyright protection under the rule of doubt. In 1974, the government created the Natural Commission on New Technological Uses (CONTU) to investigate whether the evolving computer technology field outpaced the existing copyright laws and also to determine the extent of copyright protection for computer programs. CONTU concluded that while copyright protection should extend beyond the literal source code of a computer program, evolving case law should determine the extent of protection. The commission also felt copyright was the best alternative among existing intellectual property protective mechanisms. CONTU rejected trade secret and patents as viable protective mechanisms. The CONTU report resulted in the 1980 Computer Software Act, and the report acts as informal legislative history to aid the courts in interpreting the Act. In 1980, the Copyright Act was amended to explicitly include computer programs. It now states that it is illegal to make or to distribute copies of copyrighted material without authorization, except for the user s right to make a single backup copy for archival purposes. • 5. The Ethics Of The Criminal Justice System As the saying goes, hindsight is 20/20. It is easy to look back on the history of criminal justice and scoff at the sometimes crude and barbaric methods of correcting criminal behavior. From speaking to village elders to burning those who were deemed witches, human kind s endeavor to seek out and punish bad behavior has been littered with what many could consider to be downright silly behavior. Luckily though, all of that is in the past now, with our society and criminal justice system moving in a scientific direction more so every single day. But is it really? While many areas of criminal justice that seek out the truth have been enhanced by our growth in technology, there still remains one discipline that has been praised by some and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was not until the father of criminology, Cesare Lombrosso attempted to measure blood pressure to detect lies in the late 1800 s that the modern polygraph s roots can be seen (Lewis Cuppari, 2009). Soon after in the early 1900s, Vittorio Benussi expanded on Lombrosso s idea and included breathing rate and pulse in the detection of lies. He even had a range of changes that constituted lies called the Benussi ratio (Grubin Madsen, 2005). The foundation for the modern day polygraph had been laid, and the controversy was about to begin. The basic principle behind the physical responses to lying were narrowed down to skin conductance, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration (Lewis Cuppari, 2009). In short, psychologists believed that a lie would cause at least one of these things to change, if only for a brief moment. John Larson and Leonarde Keele put these variables all together and devised a machine that would measure and graph all of these things in real time, aptly named the polygraph (Lewis Cuppari, 2009). These measurements mean nothing on their own, however. This research paper will dive deeper into the overall interview process, but the polygraph test itself typically consists of two main types of questions: control questions and relevant questions. Control questions are basic questions with easy answers, used to determine a baseline and even to embarrass the subject in order to measure how they react to such questions. Relevant ... It can also be interpreted, however, as a debate about the purpose of the corporation or about whose interests the corporation should ultimately serve. Various academics have joined the debate, arguing that there is an increasing consensus that managers should strive to maximize shareholder value, and that doing so maximizes social welfare. There is also a claim that managers are increasingly setting shareholder value maximization as their main corporate target. This paper questions the existence of a widespread consensus that companies maximize shareholder value or should do so. Theoretical reasons to doubt the existence of a strong consensus are often related to the externalities that a focus on shareholder value maximization would create. How corporations are run can affect, for example, the welfare of entire regions. Tirole (2001, p. 3) summarizes this line of reasoning by writing, There is no denying that such externalities may be substantial [...]. One topic that takes place in many conversations around the world is if music has a negative or positive affect on society. This type of question is an opinion based that mainly depends on the person and the situation in which the music is present at that time. Sometimes music can have a positive and negative affect on society at the same time. Personally, I believe that music has both a positive and negative affect on society. This can be said for just even one song having both meanings. Throughout this paper different songs will be analyzed through their lyrics to determine which parts of society would be affected in a negative and positive by each individual song. Now to go look at some explains of these impacts through song lyrics and to see if they are negative or positive through my eyes. Music can impact society in many ways whether it is in positive or negative way such as, emotionally, morally, or even physically. Emotionally, music can make society feel like they re not alone. It may even make someone feel as if that song exactly spoke about how that person was feeling at the time they heard it or when they were going through a certain situation. They all want to assert themselves as leader, and because they cannot, clashes between all three characters can be seen instantly. At the beginning of the novel, Ralph and Piggy seem to be the only people on the island. Ralph does not show much interest in Piggy, but Piggy sees it as imperative that they get to know each other and find out if anyone else is on the island. Right away, Piggy s brains and common sense are exhibited. Ralph passively blows a conch they found, not with a meeting in mind but because it sounds cool. Even though Piggy had the idea of meeting, Ralph is automatically seen by everyone who comes as their leader simply because he blew the conch. This suggests that humans select their leaders based on who brought them together. Jack then comes to the assembly, already with the leadership role of head of the choir, and assumes he should be the leader of the entire group of boys. After a vote for leader between Ralph and Jack, Ralph is elected. No one ever even considers Piggy to be a candidate, even though he had the idea for an assembly and was the most passionate about setting up order on the island. • 13. Defending Utilitarianism- Mill s Answer Defending Utilitarianism: Mill s posthumous answer to Nozick s experience machine The greatest good for the greatest number ; that is how the British philosopher John Stuart Mill famously summarized utilitarianism (Shafer Landau, 2012b, p. 120). He is not only one of the greatest utilitarians, he is also a hedonist. Hence, he believed that this greatest good can be achieved by focussing all action on attaining the greatest amount of happiness. Mill describes utility as holding that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness ((Shafer Landau, 2012a, p. 17). He defines happiness as pleasure and the absence of pain, and unhappiness as pain and the privation of pleasure. Hence, Mill argues that only pleasure is intrinsically desirable and only misery intrinsically bad (Shafer Landau, 2012a, p. 120). All other desirable things are only desirable as means to promote pleasure or prevent pain (Shafer Landau, 2012a, p. 18). Therefore, in order to refute Mill s utilitarianism, one would have to show that there is something other than pleasure or the freedom from pain that is intrinsically desirable. First, Robert Nozick s attempt to disprove utilitarianism and hedonism in the shape of his experience machine will be explained. Next, Mill s arguments in favour of utilitarianism and hedonism will be recapitulated in an attempt to answer the central research question: why does Nozick s experience ... With its simple plots, exaggerated situations, unrealistic scenarios, lurid colours, humour, animation and familiar pattern, it is a typical cartoon but with an original twist. The Flintstones did a spin off series and created a different sitcom that was almost identical to the jokes and the theme, but it was set in the space age. The only way that Flintstones and the Jetsons are different to the way in which the Simpsons works, is the type of humour used. The Simpsons humour is a lot more complex and has clever jokes; it satirises and makes a joke about political, literary, and cultural values of Americaand the rest of the world. The particular aspects of nature expressed in Frost s poems were often determined by the subjective responses of his characters to their surroundings. They were able to cope with the violence that also seemed a part of the natural world. • 31. Descriptive Essay About Being Alone We are dark as the moonless night, yet just as bright; intense and mysterious as the forces that shaped us. Living in the shadows we fade from sight and mind, but we are always there, forever defending what is ours. Porous and jagged, we absorb or repel anything as well as anyone who seeks to oppose us. Whilst the ranks of our enemies dwindle over time we endure, unwavering in our determination. Alone we are weak, ineffective, and ultimately meaningless. Together we are strong, steadfast and spectacular in our simplicity. We as one eternally serve the greater purpose, all with the pride and patience only our kind possess. At first, we were one, mighty and strong, we were great, but without meaning in our existence, without scope or direction. Then, there was heat; blinding, raging heat stronger than even the forces that shaped us, it tore us apart. Shattered our very view of the world and separated us from one another. As suddenly as the groundbreaking warmth appeared it was gone, leaving me all alone in the bitter cold to fend for myself. For the first time I was on my own, my reality broken in an instant into a million tiny pieces; it was overwhelming and strange, yet stunning along with euphoric. In the beginning the silence was empty and lacking. After a lifetime of togetherness, the lonely feeling of isolation cut deep within me. Grievances, mourning, and anger are human emotions, but could these three emotions be used to describe the natural world of Mother Nature? In 1976, Erdrich received her bachelor s degree from Dartmouth and soon moved back to North Dakota to pursue teaching. However, two years later Erdrich received a fellowship to teach composition and creative writing at Johns Hopkins University where she completed her Master s degree a year later. • 37. Wasp Nest Analysis Wasp Nest Takes over Guest Bed in Woman s Home Talk about unwanted guests taking over your home, a woman in Winchester, England found that she had thousands of unwanted guests residing in her spare bedroom. It appears that the nest took three months to build, but only a short time to remove. The wasps had managed to take up space in the woman s spare bedroom for at least three months. The woman s son had discovered the nest when he went to search the room for an item he needed. The room had been closed off, except for an open window. The wasps had managed to chew through all the bedding and the mattress on the bed, in order to construct the massive nest that was found. We may wonder how a room could be left unattended for so long, that is easy. The woman lives alone in her five bedroom home, and has closed off rooms that are not in use. An exterminator that was called in to eradicate the problem stated that he had to first eliminate the wasps flying around him. He then used a powder to inject into the wasp nest and waited ten minutes for the powder to take effect. In ten minutes, the exterminator was able to return to the room and break apart the nest. The Problem of God in Devils and The Brothers Karamazov In contemplating the creation of the novel The Idiot, Dostoyevsky wrote in a letter to A.N. Maikov that he hoped to focus the work around a question with which I have been tormented, consciously or unconsciously all my life that is, the existence of God. 1 Dostoyevsky s personal struggle with the question of faith, and also his own experience with trying doubts as a believer, are manifested in the characters he writes. A large number of Dostoyevsky s books are written within the framework of a Christian doctrine, juxtaposing characterizations of believers and non believers, enforcing the ultimate good and reason that follow from possessing a faith. His father was, though reverent, a drunk, and was later murdered by serfs on account of his inhumane treatment.6 This rougher sphere of his upbringing manifested itself in Dostoyevsky s early adulthood. He became involved in a group known as the Russian Utopian Socialists, influenced by Belinsky, a well known literary critic. The partnership formed by the two presumably shook Dostoyevsky s faith, as his revered mentor found that as a socialist, he had to destroy Christianity in the first place. He knew that the revolution must necessarily begin with atheism. 7 Later, though, Dostoyevsky broke off from the specific branch of the movement, forming the Durov circle. He was arrested for the circulation of a private letter full of insolent expressions against the Orthodox Church. 8 Evidently, he had forgotten his mother s teachings. However, the actual 80/20 split doesn t always hold up in the real world. Sometimes it is 90/10 or 70/30 or some other ratio that favors unevenness. The main point is that things are not distributed evenly. This observation holds true for things such as the distribution of wealth among the population, or of the distribution of talent among the population. It doesn t matter if the talent is musical, athletic, or ability to make sales. For example, within any business organization, academic school, or sports team, there will always be a few top performers. As mentioned before, the 80 20 rule doesn t just apply to people. I am happy to fill that gap now. It is high time. Dr Mangan has a rare scientific talent that enables him to originate and follow uncommon ideas to their conclusion and then substantiate his remarkable ideas with clear theorising and hard experimental data. An overview of his publications might lead to the impression that he deliberately chose areas that were neglected and controversial. He devoted half a decade of his early career to parapsychology, publishing innovative research and clearheaded reviews. He devoted the later part of his career to research in smoking funded by the tobacco industry. He had a lasting interest in Russian psychology particularly Pavlov and the neo Pavlovians. A considerable amount of his work is devoted to drawing parallels between Eastern and Western conceptualisations of personality, learning and arousal which culminated in an influential book The Biology of Human Conduct: East West Models of Temperament and Personality . • 44. Analysis Of The Apocalyptic Destruction Of The Human Race Zombie texts have been a longstanding subgenre of fantasy. Often gory and with elements of horror, the apocalyptic destruction of the human race brought about by some form of virus is consumed by many and is reoccurring in popular culture. It is often questioned why we find such enjoyment in a text that depicts such horrors. The answer is in the role fantasy plays, which is a fulfillment of a wish, a way to depict our explicit desires in a licit way, and to provide a screen for us to do this. World War Z (WWZ) adheres to these fantasy elements whilst also highlighting the mediation between duty and pleasure. The scene that has been selected for analysis is one where hero Gerry Lane is fleeing with his family up the stairs of an apartment complex to meet the helicopter that is coming to save them, all whilst fighting off a horde of zombies. This scene is tense, fast paced, and shows our hero fulfilling his expected role and the desires of the viewers. The scene begins with Gerry and his family ready to flee to the roof. The shot is filled with flickering red light, red being a common symbol for danger, whilst the flickering provides uncertainty and fear. These shots set the scene for the impending horror. Gerry s wife asks him, How do we know they re coming? to which he replies, They re coming. From the start, Gerry is the all knowing, calm, collected hero. He is the protector who takes the lead.
